Schizophrenia is a mental disorder hardly investigated with regard to habitual disgust. We compared disgust propensity, trait anger, trait anxiety and disgust sensitivity in 69 patients with schizophrenia, 68 depressive patients and 70 mentally healthy controls. Patients with schizophrenia reported more pronounced overall disgust propensity than healthy individuals. Whereas food-related disgust was crucial for schizophrenia, depressed patients experienced elevated death-related disgust. Females reported greater disgust proneness than males. Both patient groups showed higher trait anxiety and trait anger than controls. Depressive patients additionally reported elevated anger expression and even higher anger suppression than the schizophrenia group. We found a positive relationship between disgust proneness and disgust sensitivity in controls and patients. The importance of disorder-specific disgust domains is discussed. Retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF) effects are found in schizophrenic patients and in controls when inhibition in memory retrieval was investigated with the use of retrieval practice procedure. However, RIF was reduced in patients when a recognition test was used which indicates that inhibitory processes in memory are altered in schizophrenia.

The study attempts to investigate the relationship between the risk of violent crime and schizophrenia and the role of substance abuse in aggravating the risk. The results indicate that by controlling the intake of substance abuse, one can reduce the risk of violent crime among such individuals.

Childhood traumas are associated with suicidal behavior but this aspect has not been examined in relation to schizophrenia. In this study, 50 chronic schizophrenic patients who had attempted suicide were compared with 50 chronic schizophrenic patients who had never attempted suicide for their scores on the 34-item Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). It was found that schizophrenics who had attempted suicide reported significantly higher CTQ scores for emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional neglect, and physical neglect than schizophrenics who had never attempted suicide. Therefore, childhood trauma may be a risk factor predisposing schizophrenic patients to attempt suicide.

In this study, demographic and clinical characteristics of individuals with schizophrenia in a Chinese rural community who had attempted suicide at some time in their lives and those who had not made a suicide attempt were compared. Among individuals with schizophrenia, subjects with (n = 38) and without (n = 472) a lifetime history of suicide attempt were assessed with the Present State Examination. The results indicate that attempters had a significantly younger age, higher level of education, higher rate of lifetime depressed mood and hopelessness, and a larger number of positive symptoms than patients without suicide attempts. The logistic regression models also indicated that hopelessness, the number of positive symptoms and age were the most important predictors. Early interventions focusing on reducing hopelessness and controlling positive symptoms may help reduce the risk of suicide attempts among patients with schizophrenia.

Patients with schizophrenia display numerous cognitive deficits, including problems in working memory, time estimation, and absolute identification of stimuli. Research in these fields has traditionally been conducted independently. We examined these cognitive processes using tasks that are structurally similar and that yield rich error data. Relative to healthy control participants (n = 20), patients with schizophrenia (n = 20) were impaired on a duration identification task and a probed-recall memory task but not on a line-length identification task. These findings do not support the notion of a global impairment in absolute identification in schizophrenia, However, the authors suggest that some aspect of temporal information processing is indeed disturbed in schizophrenia.

Expressed emotion is a measure of an individual's critical and/or emotionally overinvolved attitudes toward another person. The characteristics of parents who are high in expressed emotion are not fully understood. This study examined some variables potentially associated with expressed emotion, as measured by the Camberwell Family Interview, in 54 parents of schizophrenic young adults. Statements of (1) self-blame for the patient's illness, (2) controlling behaviors toward the patient, and (3) controlling behaviors toward others were assessed. As predicted, parents who blamed themselves for the patient's illness had higher emotional overinvolvement ratings than non-self-blaming parents. Measures of controlling behavior revealed that highly critical parents were not more controlling than less critical parents; however, parents high in emotional overinvolvement reported higher levels of patient- and other-controlling behaviors than parents low in emotional overinvolvement. These results suggest that the emotional overinvolvement component of high expressed emotion is associated with self-blaming attributions and controlling behaviors in parents, but that the criticism component is not.

Neuropsychological impairments have been consistently reported in patients with schizophrenia. As little is known whether subjects with schizotypal personality disorder exhibit neurocognitive dysfunction similar to that in schizophrenia, we assessed the neuropsychological profile of 15 subjects with schizotypal personality disorder and compared it with that for 15 patients with schizophrenia and for 15 psychiatrically normal volunteers. All participants were administered a standard neuropsychological battery assessing language ability, spatial ability, visuomotor function, verbal memory, visual memory, auditory attention, visual attention, and executive function. Performance on most of the cognitive domains was impaired in patients with schizotypal personality disorder but less than patients with schizophrenia. Specifically, impairment in verbal memory and visuomotor ability in patients with schizotypal personality disorder and patients with schizophrenia were comparable, while patients with schizophrenia performed worse on the test of executive function than did patients with schizotypal personality disorder. As a whole, cognitive deficits in patients with schizotypal personality disorder were qualitatively similar to, but quantitatively milder than, those for patients with schizophrenia. The results suggest that cognitive abilities related to frontotemporal lobe function are disturbed across these schizophrenia-spectrum disorders.

This is a qualitative study of 76 women with schizophrenia whose marriages had broken. The sample was drawn from three different centres. Using qualitative methods of exploration, information regarding their illness, the marriage and its separation and the various consequences of this event was gathered. Many of them had not separated legally and were not receiving any maintenance from their husbands. Their concerns centred around their future, the fact they would be a burden to their ageing parents and in some cases about their children. Stigma attached to separation was as poignant as that of being mentally ill, if not more. However, a striking aspect was that even after several years of separation, these women still harboured a lot of hope that they would be able to reunite with their husbands. Background: Personal space is the area individuals maintain around themselves into which others cannot intrude without arousing discomfort. Objective: We tested the hypotheses that psychological distancing of patients with schizophrenia would be a characteristic of 1) diagnosis and/or 2) syndrome. Methods: For this aim, 30 schizophrenic and 30 age matching normal males established comfortable interpersonal distances for 20 word-stimuli representing family members, significant others, self-images, emotionally neutral and threatening surroundings. The distances were assessed by a paper-and-pencil projective measure, the Comfortable Interpersonal Distance scale and the patients' psychopathological symptoms were quantified by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. t-tests and correlational analyses were employed to examine the relationships between the parameters of interest. Results: The rank order (hierarchy) of preferable interpersonal distances of patients with schizophrenia was similar to that of normal subjects. At the same time, psychological distance from family members and themselves was substantially larger among the patients. There were no significant correlations between any kind of interpersonal distance and positive syndrome of schizophrenia, while negative syndrome showed significant inverse association with distances from emotionally neutral and threatening figures and positive correlation with family member and self-image distances. Conclusion: The results suggest that the negative syndrome of schizophrenia attenuates the differences between interpersonal distances from generally close and distant persons.

Although cognition has been investigated in individuals with schizophrenia and in non-schizophrenic cocaine abusers, few studies have focused on cocaine-abusing schizophrenics. Previous studies have shown contradictory results despite the fact that individuals with schizophrenia and cocaine dependence have worse long-term outcomes, and that each disorder separately is associated with neuropsychological impairment. The present study intended to clarify these inconsistencies with a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Twenty-four cocaine-dependent schizophrenics and 23 non-drug abusing schizophrenics were recruited from the VA. Participants were administered tests focusing on motor skills, processing speed, attention, concentration, and executive functioning. While individuals with schizophrenia and cocaine dependence performed worse on the Grooved Peg Board and the Stroop A, the non-drug abusing schizophrenics performed worse on Trails Part A and B. However, a MANOVA failed to show group differences in overall neuropsychological performance. Attentional deficits are a prominent aspect of cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia. The present study was designed to investigate attention deficit in a group of patients with diagnosis of schizophrenia. According to the segmental set theory suggested by Hogarty and Flesher, three aspects of attention problems, selective, sustained, and shift in attention, were studied. The 30 patients hospitalized on three psychiatric wards at Shiraz and Isfahan and 30 normal healthy subjects matched for age, sex, and years of education were administered a computerized Continuous Performance Test, Stroop Color-word Test, and Wisconsin Card Sorting test. Analysis showed patients performed more poorly than control subjects on measured aspects of attention. The acute/chronic classification did not predict differences in attention scores between subtypes of schizophrenia, while the positive/negative classification did. Paranoid, undifferentiated, and residual groups by subtypes of schizophrenia showed similar performance on the Continuous Performance Test, but were significantly different on errors on the Wisconsin Card Sorting test and on reaction time to Stroop stimuli in the incongruent color-word condition. Patients with paranoid diagnosis performed better than other subtypes on these tasks. Present results suggest that the Continuous Performance Test is valuable for differentiating of schizophrenia spectrum disorder, while scores on Stroop and Wisconsin card sorting may have better diagnostic value for differentiating subtypes of the disorder.

To ascertain how useful the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSI; Beck & Steer, Manual for Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (1991)) would be for assessing the severity of suicidal ideation in patients who were diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizoaffective, or bipolar disorders, 142 inpatients were asked to complete the BSI. Eight (6%) patients refused, and four patients (3%) were unable to complete the BSI because they were unable to concentrate. Of the 130 patients who completed the BSI, 53 (41%) had schizoaffective, 37 (28%) had paranoid schizophrenia, 30 (23%) had manic bipolar, and 10 (8%) had depressed bipolar disorders. The coefficient tx for the BSI was .96, and its one-week test-retest reliability for a subsample of 15 inpatients was 0.88, p < 0.001. The BSI total scores were positively correlated with having ever attempted suicide, r = 0.46, p < 0.001. According to the BSI, 36 (28%) patients were classified as current suicide ideators. The results were discussed as supporting the use of the BSI with inpatients who are diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizoaffective, or bipolar disorders. This study reports evidence that schizophrenia patients are significantly impaired in both spatial and object (shape) working memory. A 3-s delay between exposure and recall of targets was used and Bayesian item-response theory was applied to compensate for the tasks' differential difficulty while simultaneously taking account of missing data from participant attrition. Weaker evidence was found that in schizophrenia both domains are equally impaired on average, that spatial and object working memory appear to be more highly correlated with each other in the schizophrenia population than in the normal population, and that schizophrenia patients show greater variability in spatial than object working memory performance.

THE relation between severity of symptoms and level of quality of life in schizophrenia is not strong. This situation may be explained by the hypothesis that the relation is moderated by ways of coping which are known to overcome stress. The main objective of the study was to evaluate this hypothesis by assessing the relations between positive and negative symptoms, problem-focused and emotion-focused ways of coping, and various domains of quality of life in a group of psychiatric outpatients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Subjects were recruited from a community mental health center. Fifty-eight adult outpatients diagnosed with schizophrenia who gave informed consent were assessed cross-sectionally with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), the Ways of Coping Checklist, and the Wisconsin Quality of Life Index. Negative symptoms were inversely related to activities of daily living, and positive symptoms were directly related to distress. There were no other significant relations between symptoms and quality of life. Problem-focused and emotion-focused coping did not moderate the relation between symptoms and quality of life. Further study is required concerning coping in schizophrenia.

THE current diathesis-stress model of schizophrenia proposes that a genetic deficit creates a predisposing vulnerability in the form of oversenstivity to stress. This model positions all psychosocial events on the stress side of the diathesis-stress equation. As an example of hypotheses that emerge when consideration is given to repositioning adverse life events as potential contributors to the diathesis, this article examines one possible explanation for the high prevalence of child abuse found in adults diagnosed schizophrenic. A traumagenic neurodevelopmental (TN) model of schizophrenia is presented, documenting the similarities between the effects of traumatic events on the developing brain and the biological abnormalities found in persons diagnosed with schizophrenia, including overreactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis; dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin abnormalities; and structural changes to the brain such as hippocampal damage, cerebral atrophy, ventricular enlargement, and reversed cerebral asymmetry. The TN model offers potential explanations for other findings in schizophrenia research beyond oversensitivity to stress, including cognitive impairment, pathways to positive and negative symptoms, and the relationship between psychotic and dissociative symptomatology. It is recommended that clinicians and researchers explore the presence of early adverse life events in adults with psychotic symptoms in order to ensure comprehensive formulations and appropriate treatment plans, and to further investigate the hypotheses generated by the TN model.

Improving quality of life for patients is emerging as a legitimate goal for UK inpatient forensic mental health services. The Lancashire Quality of Life Profile (LQOLP), which has been used widely to measure well-being in community settings, was trialed on an inpatient population being cared for under conditions of high security. Two groups of male patients, drawn from within the same institution but with markedly different clinical conditions, i.e. schizophrenia (N = 47) and personality disorder (N = 48), were interviewed using the LQOLP. Although both groups had been cared for under largely similar environmental conditions over similar lengths of time (9.5 years), the subjective global well-being of the two groups differed systematically as did other objective and subjective well-being measures. However, analysis found that the variations in global well-being could not be attributed readily to factors covered by the interview, including either current mood or personality. Possible reasons for these findings and implications for the use of the LQOLP under conditions of high security are discussed.

This article presents a formal, mathematical account of relations between response times on simple cognitive tasks and content of complex judgments involving multiple stimulus dimensions for people with schizophrenia. Changes in multidimensional judgments were viewed as the result of interference from increased stages of encoding with respect to the individual dimensions. Information on dimensional properties encoded earlier in a judgment trial was considered to be more susceptible to loss over the rest of the trial, because of a larger number of encoding stages applied to the remaining dimensional properties. Model predictions were tested with samples of paranoid and nonparanoid schizophrenic participants and controls. Unidimensional encoding speed was assessed by reaction times in an explicit similarity ratings task, and multidimensional judgment content was assessed by the relative importance of different stimulus dimensions to participants' ratings in an implicit similarity ratings task. Results support validity of the model.

The role of transient and sustained channels in masking was investigated in groups with positive and negative symptoms in schizophrenia and in a control group. The target stimulus was a 3.0 c/deg sinusoidal grating, which was masked at 11 stimulus-onset asynchronies between -40 to 360 ms by a 1.0 c/deg mask or an 11.0 c/deg mask. The results showed that there was no difference between the control and positive-symptom groups in the perception of the 3 c/deg target stimulus, nor was there a difference when the target was masked by 1 or 11 c/deg masking stimuli. In comparison with the control and positive-symptom groups, the negative-symptom group showed a significantly higher threshold for the perception of the 3 c/deg target stimulus and more masking with a 1 c/deg mask, but not with an 11 c/deg mask. The results provide evidence for distinguishable differences in visual masking between groups with positive and negative symptoms in schizophrenia.

This study investigated the relationship between performance on word association and sentence construction tasks and the three-syndrome model of schizophrenic symptoms. Participants were 70 inpatients with a primary diagnosis of schizophrenia. Each participant was rated on positive and negative symptom scales, and ratings were grouped into three syndromal patterns (Reality Distortion, Psychomotor Poverty, and Disorganization). Among the syndromes, only symptoms of disorganization were significantly related to the ability to construct meaningful sentences using word associations. Results suggest that symptoms of disorganization, length of hospitalization, and premorbid adjustment are dimensions that are related to language disturbance in patients with schizophrenia.

Although gender differences in schizophrenic symptom expression have been widely established, no systematic studies have documented if these differences extend to the perception of quality of life. This survey gathered international data on the perception of quality of life among 102 outpatient men and women with schizophrenia from Canada, Cuba, and the United States. Using portions of Lehman's Quality of Life Interview, quality of life was assessed on the domains of social relationships, health, living situation, leisure, finances and general quality of life. Gender differences were tested with ANOVA where site was treated as a nested variable and separate t-tests comparing men and women within each country. Although no differences were found for the combined sample, differences were observed between men and women in Canada and Cuba on the social relationship domain. In Canada, women with schizophrenia reported a higher quality of life for social relationships. In contrast, Cuban men with schizophrenia reported higher quality of life for social relationships than Cuban women. Findings from the three sites show no differences for the other domains. With the possible exception of social relationships, these findings suggest no discernable differences in the perception of quality of life for men and women with schizophrenia. Overall, men and women with schizophrenia were only somewhat satisfied with some aspects of life. These findings have implications for developing comprehensive community care that includes quality of life promotion.

This study compared levels of referential communication disturbance in speech samples from 41 stable schizophrenia outpatients, 46 parents of patients, and 23 nonpsychiatric control participants in affectively positive versus affectively negative conditions. The speech of the patients and parents showed elevated frequencies of reference failures in the affectively positive condition compared with control participants; the speech of the patients became more disordered in the affectively negative condition, whereas the speech of the parents did not. These results support the idea that referential communication disturbances reflect vulnerability. as well as overt illness, but that affective reactivity of these disturbances is associated mainly with the manifest illness. These findings are consistent with biological, cognitive, and psychological theories about the processes underlying stress responsiveness of schizophrenic symptoms more generally.

The use of linguistic context in positively thought-disordered (TD) schizophrenics was investigated through examination of their performance on an on-line word-monitoring task. Controls and non-TD schizophrenics took longer to recognize words preceded by linguistic anomalies compared with words in normal sentences. Compared with both other groups, TD schizophrenics showed significantly smaller differences in reaction time, suggesting that they were relatively insensitive to linguistic violations. TD schizophrenics were also less sensitive to linguistic violations in an off-line version of the task, in which they judged whether the sentences 'made sense.' Finally, these participants produced more errors on a verbal fluency task than did non-TD schizophrenics or normal controls. These findings are consistent with the theory that schizophrenic thought disorder arises from a deficit in the use of linguistic context to process and produce speech.

In this study, sustained, selective, divided, and switching attention, and reloading of working memory were investigated in schizophrenia by using a newly developed Visual Attention Battery (VAB). Twenty-four outpatients with schizophrenia and 24 control participants were studied using the VAB. Performance on VAB components was correlated with performance of standard tests. Patients with schizophrenia were significantly impaired on VAB tasks that required switching of attention and reloading of working memory but had normal performance on tasks involving sustained attention or attention to multiple stimulus features. Switching attention and reloading of working memory were highly correlated with Trails (B - A) score for patients. The decline in performance on the switching-attention task in patients with schizophrenia met criteria for a differential deficit in switching attention. Future research should examine the neurophysiological basis of the switching deficit and its sensitivity and specificity to schizophrenia.

In recent years, researchers have explored the subjective experience of patients diagnosed as schizophrenic and its transformation throughout the course of schizophrenia. Experience is a complex, nontransparent reality that escapes direct, empathic understanding, Concepts and methods developed by European psychiatric phenomenology and by Ricoeur's hermeneutics are used for discussing data collected in Montreal with patients diagnosed as schizophrenic. Persons who differ for their rate of rehospitalization during the last 4 years are compared on various indices of social integration and for their subjective 'life-world.' Data indicate the importance of 'positive withdrawal' for nonrehospitalizated patients and enlighten its subjective significance. Patients' narrative reveal how distancing and relating elements are interwoven in their life history. Self-descriptions bring out the semantic and stylistic strategies used to construct a narrative identity. They illustrate the range of strategies patients use to distance themselves from a static, objectified characterization of themselves. Data indicate the importance of understanding patients' experience from the perspectives developed by European phenomenological psychiatry. This invites the reevaluation of the very notion of coping and its expansion on the basis of a broader approach to the notion of experience. Hypotheses are drawn regarding the role of cultural and social factors in shaping a position of 'positive withdrawal.'

The information-processing characteristics of time estimation have not been well-documented. This research investigated explicit time estimation to test whether (1) it can occur 'automatically' and (2) the cognitive function generally known as 'working memory' predicts accuracy of time estimation. Data on two tasks requiting explicit time judgement (time interval estimation and production) are reported for a sample of 43 normal, healthy controls and 19 inpatients with chronic schizophrenia. Each task was given in a standard (passing time interval is unfilled) and dual-task format (interval is filled by oral reading). Multivariate analysis of variance suggested that for both patients' and the normal controls' time estimation accuracy was (1) highly sensitive to whether a passing interval was filled with a concurrent activity such as reading and (2) predictable on the basis of age, education, and working memory skills. Also, the effect of the dual-task manipulation did vary as a function of psychosis for the Time Interval Production task. The data suggest that procedures for explicit time judgements do not occur automatically and utilize controlled processes such as working memory.

Polygraphic recordings was used to assess laughing and smiling, and results were compared for 34 normal controls, 24 schizophrenic patients, and 15 depressive patients. The schizophrenic and the depressive patients showed reduced 'laughs of pleasure,' i.e., laughing in reaction to a comic video assessed by laughing score; however, the depressive patients in remission showed the same laughing reaction as the controls. 'Smiles as social signals' during interviews were reduced for the schizophrenic patients but remained for the depressive patients. There was a tendency for greater reduction of both laughing and smiling in disorganized- versus paranoid-type schizophrenia, suggesting that the disturbance of affect might be more severe in the former. These results show the possibility that polygraphic recording of laughing and smiling might be a useful method for investigating the disturbance of affect in schizophrenic and depressive patients.

In our study of 617 schizophrenic patients, we tested the hypothesis that women have a better objective and subjective quality of life than men. Better social integration of women was confirmed. Objective conditions had a significant but quantitatively small impact on satisfaction with specific life domains. Better social integration did not, however, lead to more satisfaction among schizophrenic women. Satisfaction with life in general was better predicted by satisfaction in different life domains than by objective circumstances. Predictors of satisfaction with life were not equal for both sexes. Rather than confirming quantitative differences in subjective quality of life, our data support the existence of gender-specific processes and contexts of subjective valuation.

This study examined attentional deficits in 44 schizophrenic patients (24 neuroleptic-naive and 20 neuroleptic-withdrawn patients) across changes in medication status and clinical state using a 1-9 continuous performance test (CPT) with distractors. Patients' attentional selectivity scores (A[prime]) were unchanged from the off-medication to on-medication testings (on average, 6 months later), despite significant improvement in both positive and negative symptoms. Both patient groups had significantly lower A[prime] scores than 44 matched healthy controls at each testing. The nonschizophrenic siblings (n = 15) of these patients made significantly more errors of omission and commission than healthy controls. The results suggest that attentional deficits, as measured by this CPT, appear to measure stable markers of schizophrenia that may be associated with genetic vulnerability to the illness.

The differential allocation of attentional resources to attended and ignored stimuli was examined by measuring skin conductance orienting responses and secondary reaction time in relatively asymptomatic schizophrenia outpatients, demographically matched normal controls, college students putatively at risk for psychosis, and a college student control group. At-risk participants were those with extreme scores on scales for either anhedonia or perceptual aberration-magical ideation (per-mags). Compared to control groups, the patients and per-mags showed secondary reaction time results suggesting a delay in the differential allocation of attentional resources. This deficit was observed particularly in patients and matched controls with few or no skin conductance orienting responses, suggesting that impaired autonomic orienting is related to underlying cognitive - attentional vulnerability factors.

Using randomized stimulus onset asynchrony (SOAs), the authors traced the time course of Stroop interference and facilitation in normal participants and participants with schizophrenia. Unlike earlier findings using blocked SOAs, singular peaks in interference, facilitation, or both occurred at particular SOAs. The peaks of normal participants and participants with schizophrenia differed. Findings are congruent with a model of Stroop performance that posits individual differences in processing speeds of target and nontarget stimulus dimensions, coupled with critical points in response selection. Participants with schizophrenia also showed more overall interference than normal control participants. A second experiment that added a temporal gap between the distractor word and target color obliterated Stroop effects only for individuals with schizophrenia. These findings provide a new empirical basis for models of Stroop effects. They are also consistent with hypotheses about the importance of the prefrontal cortex for working memory and prefrontal dysfunction in schizophrenia.

The study of social cognition in schizophrenia may augment the understanding of clinical and behavioral manifestations of the disorder. In this article, the authors describe social cognition and differentiate it from nonsocial cognition. They garner evidence to support the role of social cognition in schizophrenia: Nonsocial information-processing models are limited to explain social dysfunction in schizophrenia, measures of social cognition may contribute greater variance to social functioning than measures of nonsocial cognition, task performance on nonsocial-cognitive measures may not parallel performance on social-cognitive tasks, and symptomatology may be best understood within a social-cognitive framework. They describe the potential implications of a social-cognitive model of schizophrenia for the etiology and development of the disorder.

Perceptual organization of auditory information is influenced by both the physical characteristics and the categorization of irrelevant information. This study sought to determine the degree to which schizophrenia patients could utilize acoustic properties and contextual cues (top-down factors) to segregate relevant from irrelevant material in an auditory stream. On a modification of I. Neath, A.M. Surprenant, and R. G. Crowder's (1993) auditory suffix task, both schizophrenia and control participants demonstrated better recall of relevant information when irrelevant information had different physical characteristics, compared with when both arose from the same source. In contrast, schizophrenia patients were unaffected by a contextual manipulation that allowed controls to reduce the interfering effect of an irrelevant stimulus. These data suggest that a reduced ability to utilize contextual information plays a role in the perceptual organization dysfunction in schizophrenia.

In this study, measures were developed that compared conventional Form accuracy and the ratio of Special Scores on Cards VIII-X (Color Cards) with overall Rorschach scores. Two new measures, a Color Card Perception Difference (CCPD) score and a Special Score Difference (SSD) score were used for this purpose. CCPD and SSD scores were calculated by subtracting component X + % scores and weighted Special Score ratios found on the overall Rorschach from those unique to Cards VIII - X. CCPD scores were found to be highly effective in differentiating a previously diagnosed borderline from a schizophrenic group. CCPD and SSD scores were correlated with MMPI scales for profile characteristics.

Previous studies showing that schizophrenic patients have a deficit in the ability to perceive facial expressions of emotion in others often have not used a differential deficit design and standardized measures of emotion perception. Using standardized and cross-validated measures in a differential deficit design, S. L. Kerr and J. M. Neale (1993) found no evidence for a deficit specific to emotion perception among unmedicated schizophrenic patients. The present study replicated and extended the findings of Kerr and Neale in a sample of medicated schizophrenic patients. Results showed that medicated patients performed more poorly than controls overall; however, they performed no worse on facial emotion perception tasks than on a matched control task. These findings support Kerr and Neale's conclusion that schizophrenic patients do not have a differential deficit in facial emotion perception ability. Future research should examine the nature of schizophrenic patients generalized poor performance on tests of facial emotion perception.

The present study compared negative priming performance in a non-clinical sample of individuals based on their schizotypal personality scale (STA) scores. There were 13 High STA and 19 Low STA individuals. High, but not Low, STA individuals displayed deficient negative priming, replicating previous findings. Converging evidence for this claim was observed in the correlation between negative priming and STA score, r = -.64, p < .01, supporting the notion that individuals with high STA scores exhibit an inability to adequately inhibit irrelevant information. Both groups did not differ on a simple reaction time control task, ruling out the possibility that observed negative priming differences across groups were the result of a simple motor reaction time difference. Seventy schizophrenia patients and 97 depressives were studied prospectively while in the hospital and at periodic follow-ups. Positive symptoms, negative symptoms, and post-hospital functioning were assessed at the 2-year follow-up; and suicidal activity, at the 7.5-year follow-up. The results support an interactive model of suicide risk. Psychotic symptoms (i.e., hallucinations, delusions) predict later suicidal activity only for the schizophrenia patients. Deficit symptoms (psychomotor retardation, concreteness) predict later suicidal activity only for the depressive group. Adequacy of overall functioning predicts later suicidal activity for both diagnostic groups and appears to mediate the effects of psychosis in the schizophrenia group.

Schizoid patients often appear bland or faintly repellant to other people and equally often describe themselves as empty and without a self. One aspect of this emptiness is defensive in nature. It is born of the desire to protect the self. Unfortunately, however, defensive emptying serves to weaken the very thing the individual is trying to protect. This article discusses why a person develops this particular method of self protection; describes the devices that serve to sustain the illusion of emptiness; and what happens when the emptiness begins to give way. Recent research has found a discrepancy between schizophrenic patients' outward expression of emotion and their reported emotional experience. In this study, which attempts to replicate and extend the findings of previous studies, participants with and without schizophrenia viewed emotional film clips while their facial expressions were videotaped and skin conductance was recorded. Participants also reported their subjective experience of emotion following each film. Those with schizophrenia were less facially expressive than controls during the emotional films and reported experiencing as much positive and negative emotion, replicating previous findings. Additionally, schizophrenic patients exhibited greater skin conductance reactivity to all films than controls. These findings suggest a disjunction among emotional response domains for schizophrenic patients; alternative explanations for the findings are considered as well as suggestions for future research.

The social network was evaluated by means of the self-rating scale 'Interview Schedule for Social Interaction' (ISSI) and semi-structured interviews in married patients with a DSM-III diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder (N = 17, partners, N = 16), married patients with diabetes (N = 10, partners, N = 10) and in married healthy individuals (N = 8. partners, N = 8). The two latter groups were comparison control groups matched for sex and age to the patients with a schizoaffective disorder. The scores on the ISSI and its subscales for the groups were compatible to those found in other Swedish studies. Patients with a schizoaffective disorder both experienced that they had less access to (AVAT) and were less satisfied with their deep emotional relations (ADAT). The same patients had a higher level of neuroticism as compared to the rest. The patients with a schizoaffective disorder had less often than the patients with diabetes been informed about their disease. Moreover, the partners to the patients with a schizoaffective disorder had not been informed about the disease and experienced that they had fewer social contacts (AVSI). A challenge for the professional network in psychiatry is to improve the information and education to families in which one member is struck by a schizoaffective disorder. A follow-up study of 58 adolescents with case histories of schizophrenia, psychosis and paranoia reveals that adolescent schizophrenics continued to display psychpathology and poor social adjustment. Patients with bipolar disorders had better outcomes. Adolescents with a history of psychosis had psychological problems if they were schizophrenic and had better outcomes if they belonged to the bipolar disorder category.

Examination of abnormal characteristics in relatives of schizophrenics shows that there is no relationship between schizophrenia and normal personality. Study of relatives of schizophrenics includes personal interview on psychiatric symptoms and answering a Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire. Relatives have normal scores in all personality tests while relatives of affectively ill differ from others on well-being and negative emotionality measures. Relatives of emotionally blunted schizophrenics have low scores on social closeness.
