Abstract

In Deutschland ist spätestens mit dem Inkrafttreten verschärfter Grenzwerte zum 1.1.2005 ein lebhaftes öffentliches Interesse an den Ursachen und Folgen verkehrsbedingter Feinstäube erwacht. Entgegen medienwirksam vorgetragenen einfachen Ursache-Wirkungs-Ketten ist die Feinstaubproblematik jedoch ausgesprochen vielschichtig. Während sich etwa die gesetzlichen  Regelungen und die öffentliche Diskussion bisher weitgehend auf die Beschränkung von PM10- Immissionen konzentrieren, stellen neuere epidemiologische  und toxikologische Befunde die gesundheitsschädliche Wirkung besonders kleiner Feinstaubfraktionen in den Mittelpunkt.&nbsp

Abstract

Given that people in Central Europe spend most of their time indoors, exposure research needs in particular to concentrate on indoor environments. We still have much to learn about the role of airborne particulates (especially submicrometer and ultrafine particles) within indoor pollution.This study shows that although outdoor particles are an important source for indoor ones, outdoor- to-indoor concentration ratios vary depending on particle size. Introduction It is generally accepted that links exist between airborne particles and morbidity/mortality.At present, PM2.5s (particles < 2.5 pm aerodynamic diameter) are most frequently discussed and used.The various diameter classes (TSP -total suspended matter, PM10, PM4, PM2.5) are selected for a number of reasons, with pragmatic choices being based on the particulate inhalation and retention properties of the human respiratory system, as well as technical aspects of measuring and sampling particles.Only very few epidemiological studies have paid special attention to the ill-health effects of smaller particles such as submicron and ultrafine particles.Moreover, the majority of them were not direct epidemiological investigations, but involved in-vivo and in-vitro experiments.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to detect possible environmental factors influencing the health of the less mobile population of preschool children. The relationship between outdoor exposure of the immediate 'micro-environment' where most of a preschool child's time is spent and the increased risk to respiratory ill health and allergies has been investigated in approximately 1000 children, aged 3-9 years. The findings suggest an increased risk of asthma (odds ratio OR = 1.8) and allergies (OR = 1.5) with exposure to traffic-attributable emmissions. Domestic heating-attributed emmissions were found to increase the risk to bronchitis-type illnesses (OR = 1.4).
