We report on the development and extensive characterization of co-sputtered tantala-zirconia thin films, with the goal to decrease coating Brownian noise in present and future gravitational-wave detectors. We tested a variety of sputtering processes of different energies and deposition rates, and we considered the effect of different values of cation ratio $\eta =$ Zr/(Zr+Ta) and of post-deposition heat treatment temperature $T_a$ on the optical and mechanical properties of the films. Co-sputtered zirconia proved to be an efficient way to frustrate crystallization in tantala thin films, allowing for a substantial increase of the maximum annealing temperature and hence for a decrease of coating mechanical loss. The lowest average coating loss was observed for an ion-beam sputtered sample with $\eta = 0.485 \pm 0.004$ annealed at 800 $^{\circ}$C, yielding $\overline{\varphi} = 1.8 \times 10^{-4}$. All coating samples showed cracks after annealing. Although in principle our measurements are sensitive to such defects, we found no evidence that our results were affected. The issue could be solved, at least for ion-beam sputtered coatings, by decreasing heating and cooling rates down to 7 $^{\circ}$C/h. While we observed as little optical absorption as in the coatings of current gravitational-wave interferometers (0.5 parts per million), further development will be needed to decrease light scattering and avoid the formation of defects upon annealing.

We show that the micro-scale variations in the relaxation state of amorphous silicon (a-Si) can be well-identified by Raman mapping over hundreds or thousands of μm
2 in 1–2 h. Pure and relaxed a-Si is obtained by self-implantation in crystalline silicon (c-Si) followed by anneal at 500 °C. It is then locally re-implanted over micro-sized patterns to produce unrelaxed a-Si zones. Raman mappings are obtained by pointwise confocal μ-Raman and hyperspectral Raman imaging. We also measure the depth profiles of the relaxation state in re-implanted a-Si by scanning the edge of a re-implanted sample. We infer from the depth profiles that the minimal damage dose to fully de-relax a-Si is 0.04 displacements per atoms, which is an order of magnitude smaller than the fluence needed to fully amorphize c-Si. Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outflows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outflows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outflow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the ANTARES and IceCube neutrino observatories from the same time period. We focused on candidate events whose astrophysical origin could not be determined from a single messenger. We found no significant coincident candidate, which we used to constrain the rate density of astrophysical sources dependent on their gravitational wave and neutrino emission processes., Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures

X-ray scattering PDF measurements are carried out on films deposited and subsequently annealed at various temperatures. Inverse atomic modeling is used to analyze the short and medium range features in the atomic structure of these films. Furthermore, in silico deposition simulations of Ta2 O5 are carried out at various substrate temperatures and an atomic level analysis of the growth at high temperatures is presented. It is observed that upon elevated-temperature deposition, short range features remain identical, whereas medium range order increases. After annealing, however, both the short and medium range orders of films deposited at different substrate temperatures are nearly identical. A discussion on the surface diffusion and glass transition temperatures indicates that future pursuits of ultrastable low-mechanical-loss films through elevated temperature deposition should focus on materials with a high surface mobility, and/or lower glass transition temperatures in the range of achievable deposition temperatueres. We have investigated the impact of thermal annealing gaseous atmosphere of argon, nitrogen, and forming gas on the structural and optical properties of thin polycrystalline AlN films subjected to high-energy zirconium ions implantation. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy measurements show that the structural and morphological properties of the Zr-implanted AlN films depend on the annealing gaseous environment. Post-implantation annealing under argon atmosphere yields the lowest structured surface roughness with increased grain size. Photoluminescence spectroscopy revealed multiple point defects and defect complexes related emission bands in the visible range. A series of absorption bands have been observed using photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. The origin of the emission or absorption bands is identified and attributed to various types of point defects and defect complexes, theoretically reported for AlN. New emission and absorption peaks at 1.7 eV (730 nm) and 2.6 eV (466 nm) , respectively, have been identified and attributed to the (Zr

- Abstract
Brownian thermal noise associated with highly reflective coatings is a fundamental limit for several precision experiments, including gravitational-wave detectors. Research is currently ongoing to find coatings with low thermal noise that also fulfill strict optical requirements such as low absorption and scatter. We report on the optical and mechanical properties of ion-beam-sputtered magnesium fluoride thin films and we discuss the application of such coatings in current and future gravitational-wave detectors.

- Abstract
Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outflows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outflows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outflow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the Antares and IceCube neutrino observatories from the same time period. We focused on candidate events whose astrophysical origins could not be determined from a single messenger. We found no significant coincident candidate, which we used to constrain the rate density of astrophysical sources dependent on their gravitational-wave and neutrino emission processes.

The kinetics of intermediate phase formation between ultrathin films of Pd (12 nm) and single-crystalline Si (100) is monitored by in-situ nanocalorimetry at ultrafast heating rates. The heat capacity curves show an exothermic peak related to the formation of Pd2Si. A kinetic model which goes beyond the conventional linear-parabolic growth to consider independent nucleation and lateral growth of Pd2Si along the interface and vertical growth mechanisms is developed to fit the calorimetric curves. The model is used to extract the effective interfacial nucleation/growth and diffusion coefficients at the unusually high temperatures of silicide formation achieved at very fast heating rates.

Room temperature micro-Raman investigations of LO phonon and LO phonon-plasmon coupling is used to study the As outgassing mechanism and the disordering effects induced by ion implantation in Zn-doped GaAs with nominal doping level p=7 X 10(super 18) cm(super -3). Results make the Raman technique a simple and accurate technique to measure the range of defects induced by nuclear collisions during low-energy in implantation.

- Abstract
Brownian thermal noise in dielectric multilayer coatings limits the sensitivity of current and future interferometric gravitational wave detectors. In this work we explore the possibility of improving the mechanical losses of tantala, often used as the high refractive index material, by depositing it on a substrate held at elevated temperature. Promising results have been previously obtained with this technique when applied to amorphous silicon. We show that depositing tantala on a hot substrate reduced the mechanical losses of the as-deposited coating, but subsequent thermal treatments had a larger impact, as they reduced the losses to levels previously reported in the literature. We also show that the reduction in mechanical loss correlates with increased medium range order in the atomic structure of the coatings using x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Finally, a discussion is included on our results, which shows that the elevated temperature deposition of pure tantala coatings does not appear to reduce mechanical loss in a similar way to that reported in the literature for amorphous silicon; and we suggest possible future research directions.

We have investigated the influence of defects emanating from phosphorus implantation damage in the InP capping layer on postgrowth thermally induced intermixing in self-assembled InAs/InP(001) quantum dots (QDs). Photoluminescence (PL) spectra from as-grown samples could be described as the superposition of separate PL peaks where each peak corresponded to emission from an ensemble of QDs with a particular height ranging from 4 to 13 ML. Blueshift of up to 270 meV and significant bandwidth broadening were observed in the PL spectra after ion implantation with a fluence of 5×10
11 -1014 cm-2 and subsequent annealing at temperatures ranging from 450 to 600 °C. From the analysis of the evolution of the QD peaks upon intermixing, which revealed the coexistence of intact QD PL and a broad PL feature related to heavily intermixed QDs, it was suggested that the bandwidth broadening resulted from spatial inhomogeneity in the compositional intermixing. In order to better understand the mechanism responsible for the ion-implantation-induced intermixing, samples capped with a stack of compressively strained In0.75 Ga0.25 As/InP quantum wells (QWs) were prepared to trap vacancies released by the implantation damage while not inhibiting the effect of the interstitials. Both blueshift and bandwidth broadening were suppressed in samples containing the strained InGaAs QWs, whereas the evolution of the PL spectra from the QDs behaves as expected for interstitial-mediated intermixing. The vacancies were thus believed to be trapped in the QWs and indicated that intermixing in ion-implanted InP capped samples is mediated by vacancies. The shape of the QDs changed from a truncated pyramid in the as-grown state to a double convex lens structure after intermixing as confirmed by cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging. Furthermore, the change in shape and compositional intermixing of the QDs were attributed to vacancy trapping in the vicinity of the QDs as based on atomistic strain calculations. This work investigates the interdiffusion dynamics in self-assembled InAs/InP(001) quantum dots (QDs) subjected to rapid thermal annealing in the 600–775 °C temperature range. We compare two QD samples capped with InP grown at either optimal or reduced temperature to induce grown-in defects. Atomic interdiffusion is assessed by using photoluminescence measurements in conjunction with tight-binding calculations. By assuming Fickian diffusion, the interdiffusion lengths L
I are determined as a function of annealing conditions from the comparison of the measured optical transition energies with those calculated for InP/InAs1-x Px /InP quantum wells with graded interfaces. LI values are then analyzed using a one-dimensional interdiffusion model that accounts for both the transport of nonequilibrium concentrations of P interstitials from the InP capping layer to the InAs active region and the P–As substitution in the QD vicinity. It is demonstrated that each process is characterized by a diffusion coefficient D(i) given by D(i) =D0 (i) exp(-Ea (i) /kB Ta ). The activation energy and pre-exponential factor for P interstitial diffusion in the InP matrix are Ea (P–InP) =2.7±0.3 eV and D0 (P–InP) =103.6±0.9 cm2 s-1 , which are independent of the InP growth conditions. For the P–As substitution process, Ea (P–As) =2.3±0.2 eV and (co /no )D0 (P–As) ∼10-5 -10-4 cm2 s-1 , which depend on the QD height and concentration of grown-in defects (co /no ).
