Abstract

The aim of the presented work was to develop further techniques based on a Micromegas-TPC, in order to reach a high gas gain with good energy resolution, and to search for gas mixtures suitable for rare event detection. This paper focuses on xenon, which is convenient for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay in 136 Xe. Conversely, a small admixture of xenon to CF 4 can reduce attachment in the latter. This gas mixture would be suitable for dark matter searches and the study of solar and reactor neutrinos. Abstract

The Enriched Xenon Observatory (EXO) will search for double beta decays of 136Xe. We report the results of a systematic study of trace concentrations of radioactive impurities in a wide range of raw materials and finished parts considered for use in the construction of EXO-200, the first stage of the EXO experimental program. Abstract

The design, construction, and performance of a linear radio-frequency ion trap (RFQ) intended for use in the Enriched Xenon Observatory (EXO) are described. EXO aims to detect the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe to $^{136}$Ba. To suppress possible backgrounds EXO will complement the measurement of decay energy and, to some extent, topology of candidate events in a Xe filled detector with the identification of the daughter nucleus ($^{136}$Ba). The ion trap described here is capable of accepting, cooling, and confining individual Ba ions extracted from the site of the candidate double-beta decay event. Abstract

Individual Ba ions are trapped in a gas-filled linear ion trap and observed with a high signal-to-noise ratio by resonance fluorescence. Single-ion storage times of ~5 min (~1 min) are achieved using He (Ar) as a buffer gas at pressures in the range 8e-5 - 4e-3 torr. Trap dynamics in buffer gases are experimentally studied in the simple case of single ions. In particular, the cooling effects of light gases such as He and Ar and the destabilizing properties of heavier gases such as Xe are studied. Abstract

We built a low background detector to measure the νee− elastic cross section at low energy. The detector has been installed close to a nuclear reactor in Bugey and it is running since almost one year. After having reduced the electron background by more than 2 orders of magnitude we are now taking data to be sensitive to a neutrino magnetic moment in the region below 10−10 Bohr magnetons.

Abstract

We are interested in the organisational changes in identity, brought about by the juxtaposition of paper and electronic media in the domain of daily newspapers. We define these changes through a specific case: placing the daily newspaper Le Monde on the Internet as Web pages. Our concern is how changes in identity, related to placing a daily newspaper on-line, are understood by a «communicational reading». We explore the on-line newspaper industry using «l'approche communicationnelle» (Alex Mucchielli, 1997, 1998, 2000). This approach pays particular attention to the communication processes which define the on-line newspaper industry. Our objective is to research how the nature of journalism arises, sets itself up and evolves with the help of information and communication technologies.

The MUNU experiment has been recently built to measure the neutrino magnetic moment at a reactor. Its central part, at the same time target and detector, is a 1 m/sup 3/ TPC filled with 3 bar of CF/sub 4/. This TPC is surrounded by active and passive vetos. Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influence physician preference for type of hysterotomy incisions in gravidas with a singleton or twin pregnancy undergoing cesarean section under 28 weeks, and to assess factors that result in delivery complications, defined as either intraoperative dystocia or hysterotomy extension. We hypothesized that compared to those with non-cephalic presentations, gravidas with a presenting fetus in cephalic presentation would have higher rates of low-transverse cesarean section, and reduced rates of delivery complications with low-transverse hysterotomy., Methods: This was a retrospective cohort chart analysis of 128 gravidas between 23 0/7 and 27 6/7 weeks undergoing cesarean section at a single academic institution between August 2010 and December 2022. Data was abstracted for factors that might influence the decision for hysterotomy incision type, as well as for documentation of difficulty with delivery of the fetus or need for hysterotomy extension to affect delivery., Results: There was a total of 128 subjects, 113 with a singleton gestation and 15 with twins. The presenting fetus was in cephalic presentation in 43 (33.6%), breech presentation in 71 (55.5%), transverse/oblique lie in 13 (10.2%), and not documented in 1 (0.8%). Sixty-eight (53.1%) had a low-transverse cesarean section (LTCS), 53 (41.4%) had a Classical, 5 (3.9%) had a low-vertical hysterotomy and 2 (1.6%) had a mid-transverse incision. There was a significantly higher rate of LTCS among gravidas with the presenting fetus in cephalic presentation (30/43, 69.8%) compared to those with breech (31/71, 43.7%) or transverse/oblique presentations (7/13, 53.8%), p = .03. No other significant associations were related to hysterotomy incision, including nulliparity, racially or ethnically minoritized status, plurality, indication for cesarean delivery, or pre-cesarean labor. Twenty (15.6%) subjects experienced either an intraoperative dystocia or hysterotomy extension. For the entire cohort, there was a greater median cervical dilatation in those with delivery complications (4.0 cm, IQR .5 - 10 cm) compared to those without complications (1.5, IQR 0 - 4.0), p = .03, but no significant association between delivery complications and fetal presentation, hysterotomy type, plurality, or other demographic/obstetrical factors. However, among gravidas undergoing low-transverse cesarean section, only 2/30 (6.7%) with cephalic presentations had a delivery complication, compared to 9/31 (29.0%) with breech presentations and 3/7 (42.9%) with a transverse/oblique lie, p = .03., Conclusion: In pregnancies under 28 weeks, the performance of a low-transverse cesarean section was significantly associated only with presentation of the presenting fetus. Among those with cephalic presentations, the rate of intrapartum dystocia or hysterotomy extension was low after a low-transverse hysterotomy, suggesting that in this subgroup, a low-transverse cesarean section should be considered.

Although mostly accentuated in the distal esophagus, distribution of esophageal eosinophilia in eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) seems to be nonuniform. 1 Disease extent has been associated with disease severity and disease progression in inflammatory bowel disease. 2,3 Whether the same holds true for EoE remains largely unknown. Abstract

Organisms respond to environmental stimuli in ways that optimize survival and reproduction. Tsetse fly life-history is characterized by high investment in progeny by the pregnant female and low birth rate. This places constraints on tsetse populations across the sub-Saharan biotopes they colonize where extreme climatic conditions militate against survival. Controlling metabolic rate is crucial in biotopes where daily swings in temperature can exceed 20 °C. Tsetse acquire their nutrient requirements from the blood meal. These diurnal flies are otherwise confined for most of their lives to perching sites in the shade. At these locations they are simultaneously threatened by vertebrate and invertebrate predators. Here we describe behaviours of the East African tsetse Glossina pallidipes Austen (Diptera: Glossinidae) that permit it to reduce risk daily. Newly-emerged flies remain immobile at emergence in the photophase but scotophase-emerging flies walk away within seconds to climb (negative geotaxis) vertical substrates to find a perch off the ground. Flies of all ages show the ability to fly in almost total darkness (1.10 -5  lux) in the scotophase to perch on the upper side of horizontally suspended 1 cm diameter bars, simulating branches of vegetation, but perch under the same bars during the photophase. This underlines the predilection of tsetse for objects with a linear aspect that provide a vantage point and shade. Mature G. pallidipes can discriminate between horizontally suspended bars of different diameter and shape. Flicker fusion frequency values established by optomotor and retinogram recordings reveal a higher visual acuity in mature compared to newly-emerged tsetse., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

Experimental results from equimolar PEG and protein standards samples are presented from a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer equipped with both ionizing detectors and the novel single molecule sensitive cryodetectors. The data are consistent with a model hypothesis suggesting that the observed decrease in signal strength in conventional ionizing detector MALDI-TOF mass spectrometers can be explained by the exponentially decreasing quantum efficiency of ionizing detectors. Cryodetectors, in contrast, have a mass independent detection efficiency of 100% on impact and provide additional information on the molecule state owing to the calorimetric nature of the detection mechanism.
