A taxonomic study of two Korean staphylinid species is presented. Baeocera satana Nakane is identified for the first time in the Korean Peninsula and diagnosed with illustrations of its diagnostic characters. Dalotia coriaria (Kraatz) is newly discovered in South Korea and is redescribed with illustrations of its diagnostic characters.

We newly report 25 provincial records of rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) from the province of Quebec from the following subfamilies: Steninae (1), Euaesthetinae (1), Omaliinae (2), Oxyporinae (1), Paederinae (1), Proteininae (1), Pselaphinae (2), Scaphidiinae (2), Scydmaeninae (2), Staphylininae (11) and Tachyporinae (1). Among these, two species are also reported for the first time from Ontario, two from Nova Scotia, and five are new Canadian records. We also report the first supporting data for Sunius melanocephalus (Fabricius, 1792) and Scopaeus minutus Erichson, 1840 for Quebec, and of Arpedium schwarzi Fauvel, 1878, Phyllodrepa punctiventris (Fauvel, 1878), and Sepedophilus basalis (Erichson, 1839) for Ontario. A taxonomic study of the Scaphisoma Leach in Korea is presented. Scaphisoma unicolor Achard and S. subalpinum ussuricum Löbl are reported for the first time in the Korean Peninsula. We provide a key and diagnoses with illustrations of habitus and diagnostic characters of six Korean Scaphisoma species.

A new species of Scaphobaeocera Csiki, 1909 from Yunnan, China, S. setosa sp. nov., is described. It is unique in having strongly enlarged male protarsomeres with long oblique setae, forming a fan-like structure. Members of the scaphidiine tribe Scaphisomatini collected recently in Tianmushan Biosphere Reserve (Zhejiang) and Wuyishan National Nature Reserve (part of Wuyishan Biosphere Reserve, Fujian), China, are studied. Two species, Scaphisoma krali Löbl, sp. nov. and Scaphisoma sekerkai Löbl, sp. nov., are described from Wuyishan. Baeocera franzi (Löbl, 1973) and Scaphisoma mutator Löbl, 2000 are recorded for the first time from Zhejiang province, and Scaphisoma binhanum (Pic, 1922) and Scaphoxium intermedium Löbl, 1984 are recorded for the first time from Fujian province. Scaphidium solukhumbu sp. nov. and S. yeti sp. nov. are described from Eastern Nepal. Scaphidium sp. possibly representing an undescribed species is reported from Chitwan National Park, Nepal. The article presents a study that investigates the species of rove beetle Scaphidiinae, Coleoptera: Staphylinidae, in Lesser Sunda Islands. Researchers reviewed the species of scaphidiines and they discovered that only five species of the beetle were found in the island. Moreover, the other topics discussed include the attributes of the insects, the methodologies and materials used in the research, and its taxonomy.

The Kalimantan species of Scaphisoma Leach, 1815 are reviewed. The following species are redescribed: S. borneense Pic, 1916, S. lineatopunctatum (Pic, 1916), S. punctatipenne Pic, 1916, S. punctatum (Pic, 1915) and S. submaculatum Pic, 1920. Lectotypes are designated for these species, and for S. oblongum Pic, 1916. Scaphisoma punctatipenne, described as a variety of S. oblongum, is available and raised to species rank. Scaphisoma atrithorax Pic, 1916 is placed in synonymy with Scaphisoma obliquemaculatum Motschulsky 1863. Two new species are described: S. apparatum sp. nov. and S. tarsale sp. nov. A review of 21 species of Scaphidium Olivier from East China is presented, including 6 new species: S. jinmingi sp. n. (Zhejiang, Anhui, Chongqing), S. crypticum sp. n. (Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangxi), S. varifasciatum sp. n. (Zhejiang, An'hui), S. robustum sp. n. (Fujian, Guizhou, Chongqing, Guangxi, Yunnan), S. connexum sp. n. (Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangxi), and S. bayibini sp. n. (An'hui). New province records for S. comes Lobl, S. grande Gestro, S. sauteri Miwa & Mitono, S. formosanum Pic, S. carinense Achard, S. sinense Pic, S. delatouchei Achard, S. biwenxuani He, Tang & Li, S. klapperichi Pic, S. stigmatinotum Lobl, S. wuyongxiangi He, Tang & Li, and S. direptum Tang & Li as well as some biological notes are reported. Three new species of the genus Scaphicoma Motschulsky, 1863 from Sulawesi, Indonesia are illustrated and described: Scaphicoma subflava Ogawa & Löbl, sp. n., S. bidentia Ogawa & Löbl, sp. n., and S. quadrifasciata Ogawa & Löbl, sp. n. The article examines the beetle genus Pseudobironium Pic. The genus comprises comparatively large Scaphisomatini that may be easily distinguished from other members of the tribe. 24 species are considered valid and are encountered in forested areas and usually found on fungi growing on logs and in moist vegetation debris on forest floor, as most other Scaphidiinae.

We have used comparative phylogenetic analysis to infer the age and biogeographical origins of the Three Kings Islands insect fauna, an archipelago only 56 km off the northern tip of New Zealand. We densely sampled six insect lineages (five Coleoptera, Brachynopus latus, Brachynopus scutellaris, Tarphiomimus spp., Epistranus lawsoni, and Syrphetodes spp., and one Phasmatodea, Pseudoclitarchus sentus) throughout New Zealand and sequenced mitochondrial DNA to assess phylogenetic relationships and determine ages of haplotype lineages on the Three Kings Islands. We recovered two biogeographical patterns. The first pattern was seen in three taxa, B. latus, Syrphetodes spp., and E. lawsoni, which had sister group relationships between the Three Kings and the adjacent North Cape region at the very northern tip of New Zealand. The second pattern, inferred in P. sentus, B. scutellaris, and Tarphiomimus spp., was where Three Kings lineages had sister groups that were widespread throughout most or all of New Zealand. The divergence dates, estimated using a range of previously estimated substitution rates, ranged from as old as 24 Mya in B. scutellaris to as young as 2.24 Mya in Tarphiomimus. The article presents a study that deals with genera of Philippine Scaphisomatini. The paper focuses on an additional Scaphisomatini genus, Baeocera Erichson, 1845. Baeocera is one of the 247 species recognized as valid one of the more diverse genera of staphylinoid beetles feeding on slime molds and fungi. The Philippines has seven species of Baeocera, all known only by their respective type material. The study reveals that the number of the known Philippine species of Baeocera has increased to 19.

Baeocera socotrana sp. nov. is described from Socotra Island, Yemen. The new species is a member of the B. lenta group. It has reduced metathoracic wings, shortened elytral sutural striae, and in dorsal view abdomen almost completely covered by the elytra. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nine species of Scaphidiinae are newly reported for New Brunswick, Canada, bringing the total number of species known from the province to 12. Scaphium castanipes Kirby, Baeocera inexspectata Löbl and Stephen, Baeocera securiforma (Cornell), Scaphisoma repandum Casey, and Toxidium gammaroides LeConte are reported for the first time from the Maritime provinces. Siagonum punctatum LeConte and Siagonum stacesmithi Hatch, and the subfamily Piestinae are reported for the first time from New Brunswick. The subfamily Osoriinae is reported for the first time from New Brunswick and the Maritime provinces based on the collection of three species: Clavilispinus prolixus (LeConte), Thoracophorus costalis (Erichson), and a Lispinodes species. The Lispinodes species is also newly recorded for Canada. Six species of Oxytelinae are newly recorded from New Brunswick, bringing the total number of species of this subfamily known to the province to 20. Apocellus sphaericollis (Say) and Platystethus americanus Erichson are new to the Maritime provinces. Additional locality and bionomic data are presented for Mitosynum vockerothi Campbell, and the male genitalia are illustrated for the first time. Following fi ve species are described from peninsular West Malaysia: Bironium amicale sp. nov., Scaphisoma hajeki sp. nov., S. longiusculum sp. nov., S. edentatum sp. nov., and Toxidium lunatum sp. nov. The article provides information on a zoological study which observed the rove beetle subfamily Scaphidiinae of Taiwan. The study particularly investigated Taiwanese members of Baeocera Erichson. It examined collections of Taiwanese Scaphisomatini made by Ales Smetana and S. Vit that contain a number of Baeocera extracted from sifted samples of forest litter. The study recognized 12 species, 6 of which are recognized as new, and four of which are reported fro the first time from Taiwan. Species recognized include Baeocera alesi sp. nov, m B. aliena sp. nov. and B. alishana sp. nov.

The article reviews the Philippine species of Scaphobaeocera and Xotidium of the Scaphisomatini (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Scaphidiinae), both belonging to the Baeocera group, and provides a key to the species of Scaphobaeocera. Members of these two genera are said to have the body laterally compressed and the ventrites highly vaulted, both features correlated with approximate metacoxae. It notes that the third and more species-rich genus of the group occurring in the Philippines, Baeocera, will be treated in a separate study. These three genera reportedly share two unreversed synapomorphies, aciculate maxillary palpi and the presence of prothoracic corbicula. It describes and illustrates the new species including Scaphobaeocera bulbosa, S. complicans, and S. davaoana among others.

The article describes Scaphidium direptum, a new species from Fujian and Guangdong Provinces of China and illustrates its diagnostic characters. The specimens were collected by hand from decayed wood and fungi and killed with ethyl acetate. Both male and female had a body of light reddish brown with a little darker metasternum and the male sexual characters is described as metasternite impressed medially. Its unique color pattern makes the new species easily distinguished by other Scaphidium species except for S. vernicatum and S. perpulchrum.

The article presents a study on two species of Baeocera (B.) Erichson that were gathered in Jalisco, Mexico, namely, B. gutierrezberaudi and B. pulchella. Both species were collected from rotten logs with unidentified species of Trichia Haller and Poria Persoon, and with Ganoderma australle Patouillard. Description of the coloration of B. pulchella includes elytron cream, apical portion of pronotum lighter, and body ocherous, while description of the coloration of B. gutierrezberaudi includes median area of femora, venter of thorax, and pronotum.

Scaphidium is a rove beetle genus (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) of remarkable and diverse colouration. Although most of Scaphidium species are easily distinguished by the colour patterns, there exist some confusing variants, which may introduce bias into rapid identification. Molecular identification using the mitochondrial genome is a reliable approach that overcomes the shortcoming of morphological recognition for those who have limited experience in species-level identification. Here we described the nearly complete mitochondrial genome of Scaphidium formosanum Pic, 1915, a species with variant colour types, and tested the reliability of identification based on mitochondrial genes by both gene-wise metrics and phylogenetic analyses. In this study, the 17,455 bp mitochondrial genome of S. formosanum is composed of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs. All PCGs start with typical ATN codons, except Nad4l which began with the TTG codon. The gene order is consistent with the typical linear arrangement of the published rove beetle mitochondrial genomes. The nucleotide composition is highly A+T biased (76.42%): A - 39.99%, T - 36.44%, C - 15.08%, and G - 8.49%. Multiple metrics support that our sample has a higher similarity to S. quadrimaculatum than to other species. Maximum likelihood trees confirm the placement of our sample as the closest related entity to S. quadrimaculatum. We conclude that the mitochondrial genome has a reliable performance in molecular identification in this case.
