Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, a severe eye condition, presents anatomic separation of the neurosensory retina from its outermost layer—the retinal pigment epithelium. Early recognition of this relatively common finding and proper referral of patients to the retinal surgery department is essential in order to minimize its consequent possible severe reduction in vision. Several major surgical methods for the repair of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment have been in use over the last several decades, and they all aim to find and close the break in the retina that has caused the detachment. Surgery can be performed as pneumatic retinopexy, pars plana vitrectomy, and/or episcleral surgery (buckling). General surgical trends for reattaching the retina include moving from extraocular to intraocular surgery and from bigger gauge to smaller gauge via minimal invasive vitrectomy surgery (MIVS), with implementing shorter-lasting intraocular tamponades. Surgical options for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment treatment nowadays emphasize gaining retinal reattachment, preferably with one surgery and with minimum damage to the eye. The procedure should not bring secondary eye conditions and complications with severe impairment of visual acuity, and it should be performed on as much as a smaller budget, with possibly peribulbar anesthesia, enabling the patient the quickest possible recovery. It should be adjusted to the patient’s condition, not to the surgeon’s skills or preferences.

Background and Objectives: To evaluate possible changes in macular thickness parameters during and after silicon oil tamponade and in pars plana rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery. Materials and Methods: Our retrospective study included 34 consecutive patients who underwent 23-gauge retinal detachment surgery with silicon oil tamponade. Central macular thickness (CMT), central macular volume cube (CMV) and average macular thickness cube (AVG) were measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT) before rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery with silicon oil tamponade during tamponade (seven days, one month and three months after surgery), and one month after silicon oil removal. Results: In our sample, macular parameters CMT, CMV and AVG in patients who underwent retinal detachment surgery were statistically reduced during silicon oil tamponade (p < 0.05). After silicon oil removal, all parameters recovered, reaching numeric values which were not statistically significant compared to preoperative values. The average span of silicon oil tamponade was 162 +/− 23 days. Conclusions: Silicon oil tamponade during 23-gauge rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery leads to a transitory reduction of central macular thickness, central macular volume cube and average macular thickness cube in eyes that underwent retinal surgery. After silicon oil removal, macular parameters returned to preoperative values in most of the patients.

Background and Objectives: Myopia is the most common refractive eye anomaly with a prevalence that is constantly increasing. High myopia is associated with numerous complications that can lead to permanent vision loss. It is believed that the basis of these complications lies in changes in the microvasculature of the retina caused by an increase in the longitudinal axis of the eye. Materials and Methods: Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) was used to analyze differences in macular zone vascular and perfusion density and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) parameters in myopic subjects. The following OCTA parameters were analyzed: the vessel and perfusion density of retinal blood vessels in the superficial plexus; the area, perimeter, and index of circularity of the foveal avascular zone (FAZ); and foveal and ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness. Results: Subjects with low myopia did not show statistically significant differences compared to the control for any of the analyzed parameters. Groups with moderate and high myopia showed a significant decrease in vessel and perfusion density in the parafoveal and the entire 3 × 3 mm analyzed field. Foveal vessel and perfusion densities in the myopic groups were similar to those of the control regardless of the degree of myopia. The area and perimeter of the FAZ, as well as foveal and mean GCC thickness, did not differ significantly no matter the degree of myopia, while the index of circularity was lower in highly myopic subjects. The minimal thickness of the GCC was also lower in the high myopia group. Conclusions: High and moderate myopia led to a loss of blood vessels in the macular region. Perfusion and vascular densities were preserved in the foveal region and were not affected by different degrees of myopia. The FAZ was not significantly larger in myopic subjects, but its circularity was lower in subjects with high myopia.

Abstract Background Erythropoietin (EPO) is one of the systemic angiogenic factors, and its role in ocular angiogenesis and in diabetic retinopathy (DR) is not yet fully understood. The latest research data reveal a possible correlation of higher erythropoietin concentrations in the blood and in the eye with the development of more advanced stages of DR. The main aim of this work was to examine the possible influence of serum concentrations of erythropoietin on the development of diabetic retinopathy in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. Methods The research involved 90 patients examined at the University Eye Clinic of the Clinical Center of Vojvodina, Novi Sad, Serbia. The first group comprised 60 patients with diabetes mellitus lasting for 10 years or more, with diabetic retinopathy. The second, control group consisted of 30 healthy individuals. In the first group of 60 patients with diabetes, 30 of them had non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), and 30 had proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Laboratory EPO serum levels were determined, and they were correlated to the stage of DR. Concentration of EPO was assessed by ELISA method. Results The highest average concentration of EPO in serum (9.95 mIU/ml) was determined in the group of people with diabetes with PDR. The lowest average concentration of EPO in the serum (6.90 mIU/ml) was found in the control group. The average concentration of EPO in serum in the group of patients with diabetes with NPDR was 7.00 mIU/ml. The EPO concentration in serum was elevated in the group of PDR, and it was directly proportional to the level of the clinical stadium of PDR, being significantly higher in the moderate and severe subgroup of PDR comparing to the control healthy subjects, NPDR and mild PDR (p = 0.007). Conclusions Significantly elevated serum concentration of EPO in the advanced stages of DR, and positive correlation between EPO serum concentration and clinical stages of PDR, suggest that erythropoietin represents an important growth factor from blood, which plays a significant role in retinal ischemia and angiogenesis in diabetic retinopathy, especially in the proliferative stage of this disease.

Spectroscopy results of aluminophosphate glasses doped with transition metal (TM) ions (Cr and/or Mn) are reported. Li2O-BaO-Al203-La2O3-P205 (CrO3, MnO2), Li2O-BaO-Al2O3 La2O3-P2O5(CrO3-Mn02) and Li20-Na20-BaO-Al2O3- La2O3-P205 (CrO3-MnO2) glasses have been prepared. Ultraviolet-vis, Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies have been used to investigate the structural and optical properties of the doped glasses. Optical transmission in the ultraviolet-vis range was used to study the oxidation states of the TM ions and the redox equilibria of the transition ion pairs in the aluminophosphate glasses as well as their coordination with oxygen ion ligands (02-). Aluminophosphate glasses doped with Mn-Cr ions show absorption peaks at 650 and 680 nm, which are characteristic of Cr3+ ions. The absorption peak at about 450 nm reveals the presence of both Cr3+ and Mn2+ ions. Raman peaks at about 700 and 1200 cm-1, obtained by 325 and 514.5 nm laser excitation, were assigned to the P-O-P symmetrical stretching mode and to the P02 symmetrical stretching mode, respectively. The fluorescence peak obtained by 514.5 nm laser excitation is localised at about 600 nm for Mn-doped samples and is due to Mn2+ ions in octahedral coordination. Glass samples containing Cr and Cr-Mn ion pairs exhibit fluorescence emission at about 800 nm due to Cr3+ ions in octahedral and tetrahedral symmetry; no Mn fluorescence was seen in these glasses. The effect of the mixed alkali ions on the spectra of these glass doped with transition ion pairs was also investigated. An increase in the sodium/lithium content results in a nonlinear shift of the ultraviolet transmission edge and improves the jquorescence intensity of the Cr-Mn-doped glass samples. This study investigates the potential of combining Cerium-doped bioactive glass (BBGi) with Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to enhance the properties of titanium (Ti) implant surfaces using the Matrix-Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation (MAPLE) technique. The primary focus is on improving osseointegration, corrosion resistance, and evaluating the cytotoxicity of the developed thin films towards host cells. The innovative approach involves synthesizing a composite thin film comprising BBGi and PVP, leveraging the distinct benefits of both materials: BBGi's biocompatibility and osteoinductive capabilities, and PVP's film-forming and biocompatible properties. Results demonstrate that the BBGi + PVP coatings significantly enhance hydrophilicity, indicating improved cell-material interaction potential. The electrochemical analysis reveals superior corrosion resistance of the BBGi + PVP films compared to BBGi alone, which is critical for long-term implant stability. The mechanical adherence tests confirm the robust attachment of the coatings to Ti substrates, surpassing the ISO standards for implant materials. Biocompatibility tests show promising cell viability and negligible cytotoxic effects, with a controlled inflammatory response, underscoring the potential of BBGi + PVP coatings for orthopedic applications. The study concludes that the synergistic combination of BBGi and PVP, applied through the MAPLE technique, offers a promising route to fabricate bioactive and corrosion-resistant coatings for Ti implants, potentially enhancing osseointegration and longevity in clinical settings., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

Engineering of scaffolds for bone regeneration is often inspired by the native extracellular matrix mimicking its composite fibrous structure. In the present study, we used low loadings of diatomite earth (DE) biosilica to improve the bone regeneration potential of gelatin electrospun fibrillar microenvironments. We explored the effect of increasing the DE content from 1 % to 3 % and 5 %, respectively, on the physico-chemical properties of the fibrous scaffolds denoted FG&#95;DE1, FG&#95;DE3, FG&#95;DE5, regarding the aqueous media affinity, stability under simulated physiological conditions, morphology characteristics, and local mechanical properties at the surface. The presence of biosilica generated composite structures with lower swelling degrees and higher stiffness when compared to gelatin fibers. Increasing DE content led to higher Young modulus, while the stability of the protein matrix in PBS, at 37 °C, over 21 was significantly decreased by the presence of diatomite loadings. The best preosteoblast response was obtained for FG&#95;DE3, with enhanced mineralization during the osteogenic differentiation when compared to the control sample without diatomite. 5 % DE in FG&#95;DE5 proved to negatively influence cells' metabolic activity and morphology. Meteorites contain organic matter that may have contributed to the origin of life on Earth. Carbonyl compounds such as aldehydes and carboxylic acids, which occur in meteorites, may be precursors of biologically necessary organic materials in the solar system. Therefore, such organic matter is of astrobiological importance and their detection and characterization can contribute to the understanding of the early solar system as well as the origin of life. Most organic matter is typically sub-micrometer in size, and organic nanoglobules are even smaller (50-300 nm). Novel analytical techniques with nanoscale spatial resolution are required to detect and characterize organic matter within extraterrestrial materials. Most techniques require powdered samples, consume the material, and lose petrographic context of organics. Here, we report the detection of nanoglobular aldehyde and carboxylic acids in a highly primitive carbonaceous chondrite (DOM 08006) with ~ 20 nm spatial resolution using nano-FTIR spectroscopy. Such organic matter is found within the matrix of DOM 08006 and is typically 50-300 nm in size. We also show petrographic context and nanoscale morphologic/topographic features of the organic matter. Our results indicate that prebiotic carbonyl nanoglobules can form in a less aqueous and relatively elevated temperature-environment (220-230 °C) in a carbonaceous parent body.

The different origins of Cajal-Retzius cells (CRc) as well as their diverse molecular profile suggest that this cell type may represent different neuronal subpopulations. In order to investigate whether CRc from different origins show distinct functional or morphological characteristics we used transgenic Dbx1(cre);ROSA26(YFP) mice in which two subpopulations of CRc, originating from the septum and ventral pallium (VP) at the pallial-subpallial border (PSB), were permanently labeled by yellow fluorescent protein (YFP) expression. Electrophysiological properties of YFP(+) and YFP(-) CRc were investigated by whole-cell patch-clamp recordings, while a thorough somatodendritic and axonal reconstruction of the biocytin labeled CRc was subsequently performed using a Neurolucida system. Our experiments revealed that no significant differences in resting membrane potential, input resistance or capacitance, hyperpolarization activated currents and most action potentials properties could be observed between YFP(+) and YFP(-) CRc. Both YFP(+) and YFP(-) CRc displayed spontaneous and carbachol-induced GABAergic postsynaptic currents with similar properties and comparable NMDA-receptor mediated glutamatergic inward currents that were equally affected by the NR2B specific antagonist ifenprodil. Morphological reconstructions revealed that dendritic and axonal parameters are similar between YFP(+) and YFP(-) CRc, while the dendritic compartment of YFP(+) CRc was slightly larger. In summary, no considerable differences in functional and morphological properties between YFP(+) and YFP(-) CRc could be observed in this study. These observations suggest that CRc of different ontogenic origins display comparable functional properties in the early postnatal cortex and therefore perform similar functions within the transient neuronal networks of the developing cortex., (Copyright 2010 IBRO.
