Background and study aims Hemospray (TC-325) is a mineral powder with adsorptive properties designed for use in various gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) scenarios. We conducted a systematic review & meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing TC-325 to standard endoscopic therapy (SET) for non-variceal GIB (NVGIB). Methods Multiple databases were searched through October 2022. Meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model to determine pooled relative risk (RR) and proportions with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) for primary hemostasis, hemostasis failure, 30-day rebleeding, length of stay (LOS), and need for rescue interventions. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2%. Results Five RCTs with 362 patients (TC-325 178, SET 184) – 123 females and 239 males with a mean age 65 ± 16 years). The most common etiologies were peptic ulcer disease (48 %), malignancies (35 %), and others (17 %). Bleeding was characterized as Forrest IA (7 %), IB (73 %), IIA (3 %), and IIB (1 %). SET included epinephrine injection, electrocautery, hemoclips, or a combination. No statistical difference in primary hemostasis between TC-325 compared to SET, RR 1.09 (CI 0.95–1.25; I2 43), P = 0.2, including patients with oozing/spurting hemorrhage, RR 1.13 (CI 0.98–1.3; I2 35), P = 0.08. Failure to achieve hemostasis was higher in SET compared to TC-325, RR 0.30 (CI 0.12–0.77, I2 0), P = 0.01, including patients with oozing/spurting hemorrhage, RR 0.24 (CI 0.09 – 0.63, I2 0), P = 0.004. We found no difference between the two interventions in terms of rebleeding, RR 1.13 (CI 0.62–2.07, I2 26), P = 0.8 and LOS, standardized mean difference (SMD) 0.27 (CI, –0.20–0.74; I2 62), P = 0.3. Finally, pooled rate of rescue interventions (angiography) was statistically higher in SET compared to TC-325, RR 0.68 (CI 0.5–0.94; I2 0), P = 0.02. Conclusions Our analysis shows that for acute NV GIB, including oozing/spurting hemorrhage, TC-325 does not result in higher rates of primary hemostasis compared to SET. However, lower rates of failures were seen with TC-325 than SET. In addition, there was no difference in the two modalities when comparing rates of rebleeding and LOS.

Existing literature indirectly suggests the role of IQGAP2 in angiogenesis that is still unexplored. In this study, we searched the role of IQGAP2 in tumor angiogenesis in a comprehensive manner using cell culture, patients, and animal models. Depletion of IQGAP2 in breast cancer cells increased proliferation, migration, and tubulogenesis of HUVECs. Findings were validated in ex ovo CAM, Matrigel plug and skin wound-healing assays in mouse model, showing that the reduction of IQGAP2 significantly increased angiogenesis. As a confirmation, IHC analysis of the patient's tissues showed a negative correlation of IQGAP2 expression with the microvessel density. Mechanistically, loss of IQGAP2 appeared to activate VEGF-A via ERK activation in tumor cells, which activated the VEGFR2–AKT axis in HUVECs.Implications:The findings of this study suggest the antiangiogenic properties of IQGAP2 in breast cancer. The Dual effect of IQGAP2 on EMT and angiogenesis makes it a potential target for anticancer therapy.

Emergence of multi-drug resistant pathogens has fueled the search for alternatives to the existing line of antibiotics that can eradicate pathogens without inducing resistance development. Here, we report the accelerated wound healing and disinfection potential of a non-amphiphilic quaternized fungal exopolysachharide, pullulan, without resistance generation in pathogens. The quaternary ammonium substituted pullulan (CP) derivatives showed excellent bactericidal activity against both Gram negative (MBC90=1.5 µg/mL) and Gram positive (MBC90=0.25 µg/mL) bacteria at very low concentrations without showing any toxicity towards mammalian cells. A combined approach of atomistic molecular dynamics simulation and experimental assays revealed that CP exerts a membrane directed bactericidal action through atypical “non-pore forming” pathway which is not yet established for any known antibacterial polysaccharides. This involves increase in membrane roughness, disorder among anionic lipid tails, formation of localized anionic lipid clusters and membrane depolarization finally leading to physical disruption of membrane integrity. Moreover, CP also displayed biofilm eradication abilities and emerged as an excellent therapeutic material for disinfection & healing of infected wounds. The present work shows the potential of exploiting polysaccharides as next-generation broad-spectrum antimicrobials and provides a platform for further development of rationally designed pullulan-based functional materials for biomedical applications.

Endoscopy is the mainstay treatment option for acute variceal bleeding (AVB) in liver cirrhosis. However, the optimal timing of endoscopy in such patients remains unclear.PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases were searched. We compared the mortality, incidence of rebleeding, length of stay, endoscopic hemostasis, need for salvage and units of transfusion between cirrhotic patients with AVB who underwent early and delayed endoscopy. Meta-analyses were performed by using a random-effect model. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Subgroup analysis was performed in studies where early endoscopy was defined as12 h.Nine retrospective studies involving 2824 patients were included. The early endoscopy group had a significantly lower overall mortality than the delayed endoscopy group in overall analysis (OR = 0.56, 95% CI, 0.33-0.95, P = 0.03), but the difference between them was NS in subgroup analysis (OR = 0.72, 95% CI, 0.38-1.38, P = 0.33). In-hospital (OR = 0.77, 95% CI, 0.26-2.32, P = 0.65) and 6-week (OR = 0.78, 95% CI, 0.42-1.47, P = 0.45) mortality were not significantly different between them. Overall rebleeding was not significantly different between early and delayed endoscopy groups in both overall (OR = 0.88, 95% CI, 0.51-1.51, P = 0.63) and subgroup (OR = 1.04, 95% CI, 0.55-1.95, P = 0.90) analyses. In-hospital (OR = 1.41, 95% CI, 0.67-2.96, P = 0.37) and 6-week (OR = 0.93, 95% CI, 0.40-2.17, P = 0.86) rebleeding remained not significantly different between them. Additionally, the length of stay, endoscopic hemostasis, need for salvage and units of transfusion were not significantly different between them.Early endoscopy may improve the survival of cirrhotic patients with AVB, but has no remarkable benefit on the prevention of rebleeding. These findings should be further validated by high-quality studies.

Endoscopic management of early gastric cancer is limited by the risk of lymph node metastasis. We aimed to examine the incidence and predictors of nodal metastasis in early gastric adenocarcinoma in a large national US cohort. Cases were abstracted from the National Cancer Database from 2004 to 2016. The incidence and predictors of lymph node involvement for patients with Tis, T1a, and T1b tumors were examined. A total of 202,216 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma were identified in the NCDB. Cases with unknown patient or tumor characteristics, presence of other cancers, and prior neoadjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy were excluded. 1839 cases of Tis, T1a, and T1b tumors were identified. An intracellular rise in calcium (Ca2+) is an essential requisite underlying T cell activation and its associated pro-inflammatory cytokine production. Transient receptor potential vanilloid channel (TRPV1) is a thermo-sensitive, polymodal gated and permeable to cations such as Ca2+. It has been reported that TRPV1 expression increases during T cell activation. However, the possible involvement of TRPV1 during immunosuppression of T cells has not been studied yet. Here, we investigated the possible role of TRPV1 in FK506 or B16F10-culture supernatant (B16F10-CS) driven experimental immunosuppression in T cells. Intriguingly, it was found that TRPV1 expression is further elevated during immunosuppression compared to ConA or TCR activated T cells. Similarly, in B16F10 tumor-bearing mice, the TRPV1 expression was upregulated in T cells as compared to control mice, in vivo. Moreover, we observed an immediate rise in intracellular Ca2+ levels in FK506 and B16F10-CS treated T cells as compared to ConA or TCR treated T cells. Likewise, in B16F10 tumor-bearing mice, the basal intracellular calcium level was upregulated in T cells as compared to control mice, in vivo. To further investigate the possible mechanism of such rise in intracellular Ca2+ levels, TRPV1 specific functional inhibitor, 5 -iodoresiniferatoxin (5 -IRTX) was used in calcium influx studies. It was observed that the total intracellular Ca2+ levels decreased significantly in presence of 5 -IRTX for either the FK506 or B16F10-CS as well as with ConA or TCR stimulated T cells, indicating the functional role of TRPV1 channels in FK506 or B16F10-CS mediated increase in intracellular Ca2+ levels. The current findings highlight an essential role of the TRPV1 channel in upregulating intracellular calcium levels during both immune-activation and immunosuppression. This study might also have broad implications in the context of other immune-suppressive diseases as well.

Goals and background Stress ulcer prophylaxis has been shown to lower gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) rates. Various agents have been studied, and the optimal strategy continues to be contested. This study evaluates the efficacy between proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine-2-receptor antagonists. Small sample sizes and methodology flaws limited prior studies. Study A systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov for randomized controlled trials reporting the use of PPI and histamine-2-receptor antagonist reporting rates of GIB and standardized intensive care outcomes. Risk ratios (RR) and standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A trial sequential analysis was performed to guard against errors. Results A total of 14 randomized controlled trials of 28,526 patients with a mean age of 57.83±17.35 years and 30.82% females. In our pooled analysis, PPI outperformed its comparator (RR: 0.68; 95% CI: 0.57-0.82) in clinically significant GIB. PPI re-demonstrated significant reduction in overt GIB (RR: 0.61; 95% CI: 0.39-0.97). No differences between groups was noted toward all-cause mortality (RR: 1.05; 95% CI: 1.00-1.10) or incidence of pneumonia (RR: 1.11; 95% CI: 0.82-1.51). Duration of stay (SMD: 0.07; 95% CI: -0.04-0.17) and ventilator days (SMD: 0.01; 95% CI: -0.01-0.04) were indifferent between the groups. Conclusions Among critically ill patients, PPI was associated with reduced clinically significant or overt GIB. No differences in pneumonia were seen with the use of either agent. Trial sequential analysis for clinically significant GIB ruled out the risk for false-positive results, and thereby it is unlikely that future trials will affect our conclusions.

African-Americans rank last among all racial groups for age-adjusted colorectal cancer mortality, 5-year survival rates, and rates of screening. Access to care does not fully explain racial disparities in rates of CRC and mortality. Sociocultural attitudes can predict probabilities of CRC screening. The objective of this study is to identify factors that influence colorectal cancer screening behavior in African-American men. Semi-structured interviews were conducted among 32 African-American men. Transcripts were analyzed using MAXQDA software. We then conducted a cross-sectional survey of 103 African-American men, using previously validated scales related to colorectal cancer screening and determinants. Data were analyzed with SPSS. In the interview phase, beliefs relating to masculinity emerged as factors that hindered participation in screening. Overwhelmingly, participants felt that having an in-depth discussion about colorectal cancer with their provider was critical to enabling them to get screened. The survey phase demonstrated that most participants had poor colorectal cancer knowledge, as only 16% passed the knowledge test. Forty-eight percentage agreed that their provider did not recommend getting screened. Acute pancreatitis management guidelines recommend early aggressive hydration to improve clinical outcomes. We aim to evaluate the influence of early fluid therapy (total intravenous fluids in the first 24 h [IVF/24hrs]) on clinical outcomes in patients with acute pancreatitis.This was a retrospective chart review of all patients admitted for acute pancreatitis between July 2011 to December 2015. IVF/24hrs was categorized into 3 groups according to tertiles. Logistic regression was performed to evaluate predictors of persistent organ failure and in-hospital mortality.A total of 310 patients were included: Conservative (IVF/24hrs 2.8L, n = 102), Moderate (IVF/24hrs 2.8-4.475L, n = 105) and Aggressive (IVF/24hrs ≥ 4.475, n = 103). Most patients (80.6%) were African Americans, 91.3% had mild acute pancreatitis (BISAP score ≤ 2). The Aggressive IVF group had higher incidence of persistent organ failure (16.5% vs 4.9% and 7.6%, p = 0.013), and longer length of hospital stay (9.2 ± 10.7 vs 6.5 ± 7.3 and 6.8 ± 5.7 days, P = 0.032). However, IVF/24hr did not correlate with length of hospital stay (PCC 0.08, p = 0.174). On multivariate analysis, only organ failure at admission was an independent predictor of persistent organ failure (OR 16.1, p 0.001). Persistent organ failure and local complications were found to be the only independent predictors in-hospital mortality (OR 27.6, p 0.001 and OR 16.95, p = 0.001 respectively). There was no difference in clinical outcomes in African Americans compared to other races.More aggressive early IVF therapy in a predominantly mild acute pancreatitis cohort, was not associated with improvement in persistent organ failure, length of hospital stay, or in-hospital mortality.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition that accompanies chronic inflammation of joints with limited therapeutic options. Phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC), a bioactive phytochemical, exerts its chemopreventive, anti-oxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity via the Nrf-2 pathway. However, limited water solubility, short half-life, and instability are reasons for the low bioavailability of PEITC that hampers clinical application. From studies in healthy rats, the performance of PEITC-loaded chitosan/pluronic F-127 smart hydrogel (PH) as a thermosensitive injectable demonstrated adequate thermosensitivity (gel formation), injectability (ease of administration), biocompatibility (with prolonged contact), pharmacokinetics (sustained drug release), and biosafety (nontoxic to major organs). In the adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) rat model, PEITC-hydrogel (PH50) injected into the knee joint lowered RA-related symptoms significantly (paw edema and arthritis score). Further, a marked reduction in bone erosion and inflammation-specific biomarkers was observed. Finally, this study demonstrates a smart injectable hydrogel optimally loaded with PEITC which is safe, biocompatible and exhibits significant therapeutic efficacy in RA conditions.

INTRODUCTION This study was designed to evaluate outcomes in pediatric patients undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) as compared with an American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) complexity grade-matched adult cohort. METHOD In this retrospective case-control study, ERCPs performed in pediatric patients from January 2008 to December 2018 in 2 tertiary referral hospitals were compared with a complexity-matched adult control group with similar procedural indications. Primary outcomes included the clinical success rate, technical success rate, and complication rate. Secondary outcomes included postprocedural admission rates, mode of sedation, procedure time, fluoroscopy time, hospitalization length, and the number of repeat procedures. RESULTS Two hundred thirty-two ERCPs performed in 110 pediatric patients (average age 13.3) and 318 ERCPs performed in 160 ASGE grade-matched adult controls (average age 47.2 years) were analyzed. All procedures were therapeutic. There was no difference in the technical success rate (P = 0.2), clinical success rate (P = 0.5), complication rates (P = 0.1), and fluoroscopy time (P = 0.4), between the pediatric and adult cohorts. General anesthesia use and length of stay were significantly higher in the pediatric group (P = 0.0001). In subgroup analysis, technical (P = 0.2) and clinical success (P = 0.2) as well as complication rates (P = 0.6) were comparable between patients 10 years or less and patients 11 to 18 years within pediatric cohort. CONCLUSIONS ERCP in pediatric cohorts appears to be safe and effective with equivalent outcomes relative to an ASGE complexity-matched adult cohort. Pediatric patients are more likely to require general anesthesia and have a longer average length of stay relative to adult controls.

Objectives Recent studies have shown a decrease in gallstone-related complications if same-admission cholecystectomy (SAC) is performed in mild gallstone pancreatitis (GSP); however, SAC often is not performed in resource-limited settings such as safety net hospitals. The aims of this study were to evaluate the rate of SAC and compare a composite endpoint of recurrent biliary events in patients undergoing SAC with patients in the delayed cholecystectomy (DC) group. Secondary aims included evaluating the rate of recurrent pancreatitis in patients in the DC group, identifying the predictors for DC and the reasons for not undergoing SAC. Methods We reviewed 310 patients admitted in the past 5 years with the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. Eighty patients were admitted for gallstone pancreatitis; 75% were African American, 18% were white, and the average age was 44 years with a mean body mass index of 30. Forty patients did not receive cholecystectomy before discharge. The DC and SAC groups were similar in body mass index, ethnicity, severity of pancreatitis, and complications. Results The DC group was significantly more likely to be older and with higher comorbidity indexes compared with the SAC group. Bedside Index of Severity in Acute Pancreatitis scores and revised Atlanta classification definitions were used to define severe acute pancreatitis; 10% (4) of patients had organ failure at 48 hours, whereas 17.5% (7) had a Bedside Index of Severity in Acute Pancreatitis scores ≥3. A total of 14 recurrent biliary events occurred in the DC group (14 of 40), which was 35% compared with 2 of 40 (5%) in the SAC group (P 2 was the only significant predictor of DC. The most common reason for DC was no surgical consultation during the inpatient stay (22%). Conclusions Our findings support existing evidence that DC is associated with a significantly increased risk of recurrent biliary events and pancreatitis. Furthermore, we report a 56% adherence to the current guidelines for SAC and report that the most common reason for not undergoing SAC was the absence of surgical consultation. We conclude that ensuring SAC in eligible patients should be a priority for safety net hospitals because it may help decrease hospital costs in the long term, and active efforts should be made to identify patients who may be less likely to receive SAC.

Objectives The exact prevalence for intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains unknown. In this single-center case-control study, we aimed to study the prevalence and risk factors for IPMN in patients with CKD. Methods We performed a retrospective case-control study comparing patients with and without CKD who had magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen performed between January 2018 and December 2018. Patient demographic, clinical, and imaging metrics were extracted from chart review. The prevalence of IPMN was compared between the 2 groups. Results A total of 800 patient charts were reviewed. There were 400 patients with CKD compared with an age-matched control group of 400 patients without CKD. The total prevalence of IPMN in patients with CKD was 13.7% (55/400) compared with 7.8% (29/400; P = 0.002) in non-CKD patients. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus was significantly higher in the CKD group (41% vs 14%, P = 0.0001). The percentage of patients consuming alcohol was significantly higher in the non-CKD group (23% vs 35%, P = 0.002). Conclusions Patients with CKD have a significantly higher prevalence of IPMN compared with non-CKD patients. Larger population-based studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Background and study aims Endoscopic methods of delivering uninterrupted feeding to the jejunum include direct percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy (DPEJ) or PEG with jejunal extension (PEG-J), validated from small individual studies. We aim to perform a meta-analysis to assess their effectiveness and safety in a variety of clinical scenarios. Methods Major databases were searched until June 2021. Efficacy outcomes included technical and clinical success, while safety outcomes included adverse events (AEs) and malfunction rates. We assessed heterogeneity using I2 and classic fail-safe to assess bias. Results 29 studies included 1874 patients (983 males and 809 females); mean age of 60 ± 19 years. Pooled technical and clinical success rates with DPEJ were 86.6 % (CI, 82.1–90.1, I2 73.1) and 96.9 % (CI, 95.0–98.0, I2 12.7). The pooled incidence of malfunction, major and minor AEs with DPEJ were 11 %, 5 %, and 15 %. Pooled technical and clinical success for PEG-J were 94.4 % (CI, 85.5–97.9, I2 33) and 98.7 % (CI, 95.5–99.6, I2 Conclusions DPEJ and PEG-J are safe and effective procedures placed with high fidelity with comparable outcomes. DPEJ was associated with fewer tube malfunction and failure rates; however, it is technically more complex and not standardized, while PEG-J had higher placement rates. The use of balloon enteroscopy was found to enhance DPEJ performance.

Gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) is one of the uncommon causes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Major treatment of GAVE includes pharmacotherapy, endoscopy, and surgery. The efficacy and safety of pharmacotherapy have not been sufficiently confirmed; and surgery is just considered when conservative treatment is ineffective. By comparison, endoscopy is a common treatment option for GAVE. This paper reviews the currently used endoscopic approaches for GAVE, mainly including argon plasma coagulation (APC), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and endoscopic band ligation (EBL). It also summarizes their efficacy and procedure-related adverse events. The endoscopic success rate of APC is 40–100%; however, APC needs several treatment sessions, with a high recurrence rate of 10–78.9%. The endoscopic success rates of RFA and EBL are 90–100% and 77.8–100%, respectively; and their recurrence rates are 21.4–33.3% and 8.3–48.1%, respectively. Hyperplastic gastric polyps and sepsis are major adverse events of APC and RFA; and Mallory–Weiss syndrome is occasionally observed after APC. Adverse events of EBL are rare and mild, such as nausea, vomiting, esophageal or abdominal pain, and hyperplastic polyps. APC is often considered as the first-line choice of endoscopic treatment for GAVE. RFA and EBL have been increasingly used as alternatives in patients with refractory GAVE. A high recurrence of GAVE after endoscopic treatment should be fully recognized and cautiously managed by follow-up endoscopy. In future, a head-to-head comparison of different endoscopic approaches for GAVE is warranted.

Kidney failure is common in patients with Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. In an international collaboration, 284 kidney biopsies were evaluated to improve understanding of kidney disease in COVID-19. Diagnoses were compared to five years of 63,575 native biopsies prior to the pandemic and 13,955 allograft biopsies to identify diseases increased in patients with COVID-19. Genotyping for APOL1 G1 and G2 alleles was performed in 107 African American and Hispanic patients. Immunohistochemistry for SARS-CoV-2 was utilized to assess direct viral infection in 273 cases along with clinical information at the time of biopsy. The leading indication for native biopsy was acute kidney injury (45.4%), followed by proteinuria with or without concurrent acute kidney injury (42.6%). There were more African American patients (44.6%) than patients of other ethnicities. The most common diagnosis in native biopsies was collapsing glomerulopathy (25.8%) which associated with high-risk APOL1 genotypes in 91.7% of cases. Compared to the five-year biopsy database, the frequency of myoglobin cast nephropathy and proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal IgG deposits was also increased in patients with COVID-19 (3.3% and 1.7%, respectively), while there was a reduced frequency of chronic conditions (including diabetes mellitus, IgA nephropathy, and arterionephrosclerosis) as the primary diagnosis. In transplants, the leading indication was acute kidney injury (86.4%), for which rejection was the predominant diagnosis (61.4%). Direct SARS-CoV-2 viral infection was not identified. Thus, our multi-center large case series identified kidney diseases that disproportionately affect patients with COVID-19, demonstrated a high frequency of APOL1 high-risk genotypes within this group, with no evidence of direct viral infection within the kidney., Graphical abstract

Studies analyzing artificial intelligence (AI) in colonoscopies have reported improvements in detecting colorectal cancer (CRC) lesions, however its utility in the realworld remains limited. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we evaluate the efficacy of AI-assisted colonoscopies against routine colonoscopy (RC). We performed an extensive search of major databases (through January 2021) for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting adenoma and polyp detection rates. Odds ratio (OR) and standardized mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported. Additionally, trial sequential analysis (TSA) was performed to guard against errors. Six RCTs were included (4996 participants). The mean age (SD) was 51.99 (4.43) years, and 49% were females. Detection rates favored AI over RC for adenomas (OR 1.77; 95% CI: 1.570–2.08) and polyps (OR 1.91; 95% CI: 1.68–2.16). Secondary outcomes including mean number of adenomas (SMD 0.23; 95% CI: 0.18–0.29) and polyps (SMD 0.23; 95% CI: 0.17–0.29) detected per procedure favored AI. However, RC outperformed AI in detecting pedunculated polyps. Withdrawal times (WTs) favored AI when biopsies were included, while WTs without biopsies, cecal intubation times, and bowel preparation adequacy were similar. Colonoscopies equipped with AI detection algorithms could significantly detect previously missed adenomas and polyps while retaining the ability to self-assess and improve periodically. More effective clearance of diminutive adenomas may allow lengthening in surveillance intervals, reducing the burden of surveillance colonoscopies, and increasing its accessibility to those at higher risk. TSA ruled out the risk for false-positive results and confirmed a sufficient sample size to detect the observed effect. Currently, these findings suggest that AI-assisted colonoscopy can serve as a useful proxy to address critical gaps in CRC identification.

Postpartum pelvic prolapse was observed in a female C57BL/6 mouse reared for the purpose of breeding at the animal house facility at NISER, Bhubaneswar, India. Whereas the terminal portion of the prolapsed mass was inflamed and appeared red in color, the rest of the portion appeared swollen and edematous. Reoccurrence of prolapse was observed on manual reduction. An alternative approach of hydropropulsion using weak antiseptic solution in cold water was used successfully for the management of prolapse in the mouse. The technique was observed to be easy and effective without any complication of recurrence of prolapse. The technique is less traumatic and involves minimal handling of the prolapsed mass, and hence may be helpful in preventing common complications related to manual reduction of prolapsed tissue such as congestion rupture and risk of infection. Thus, the technique can be effectively used by veterinarians for the management of pelvic prolapse in small pets or laboratory animals such as mice, rats, guinea pigs, and hamsters.
