4. Capacity-coupled multidischarge at atmospheric pressure

Abstract

A new method of plasma production at atmospheric pressure, capacity-coupled multidischarge (CCMD), is proposed. The discharge gaps in the CCMD consist of a common electrode and a number of compact electrodes (CCE) which are directly coupled with small capacitors for quenching the discharge. A simple CCE structure is provided by a cylindrical capacitor, the inner conductor of which is used as a gap electrode. A short pulse discharge is observed to appear homogeneously at each CCE. A charge transfer for the single pulsed discharge is 10-100 times as large as that of the conventional dielectric barrier discharge. In the CCMD using [O.sub.2] gas, a high efficiency of ozone production has been obtained. A device configuration of the CCMD is quite flexible with respect to its geometrical shape and size. The CCMD could be used to produce plasmas for various kinds of industrial applications at atmospheric pressure. Index Terms--Atmospheric pressure, discharge, ozone generation, plasma production.

Abstract

The influence of molybdenum preformation on the growth process of 250 micrometer diamond crystals by the combustion flame technique was investigated. The results showed that both the carbon-bearing radicals in the flame and the molbdenum oxide formed by the outer flame played an important role in diamond formation. Preoxidation effectively inhibited graphite formation and produced an increase in the deposited area.

Abstract

The spatial shape of fine-particle clouds in a strongly coupled state is controlled by varying a radial potential profile provided by radially segmented electrode for particle levitation and confinement under a completely dc configuration. Fine-particle clouds change their shapes from a usual two-dimensional disk to a three-dimensional cone, and finally concave cone with an increase in the radial potential slope. These profiles are closely related to an axial variation of the radial potential profile in the ion sheath above the segmented electrode. When we apply to the segmented electrode a potential profile with peaks between the radial center and edge, fine particles are rearranged to form azimuthal rings on the horizontal plane. The radial width of the rings is controlled by changing the peak width of the radial potential profile. Abstract

Stationary potential drop and ion acceleration along diverging magnetic-field lines are observed in a fully ionized collisionless plasma flow in the presence of electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) heating (ECRH). Time-resolved measurements for the purpose of clarifying the potential-formation dynamics show that temporal evolutions of the potential profile and electron energy distribution function correlate well with each other. The strong potential drop is found to be caused by a field-aligned electron acceleration due to ECRH, being accompanied by an effective ion acceleration so as to maintain the charge neutrality condition in the downstream region from the ECR point. Index Terms--Diverging magnetic-field lines, electron cyclotron resonance, ion acceleration, stationary potential drop.

One of the plans, Plasma Lab (PK-5), is to develop and use the spherical distribution of fine particles without a void in a plasma. We are developing plasma systems for the purpose in collaboration with the group of Europe. In this budget year, we investigated to make spherical plasma configuration using a spherical quartz vessel and external radio-frequency electrode and managed to form particle arrangement without a void.
