Two new hydroquinones bearing a 1,3-enyne moiety, pestalotioquinols G and H, together with four known compounds, including pestalotioquinol A, phomonitroester, (R)-4,6,8-trihydroxy-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1(2H)-one, and scylatone were isolated from the marine fungus Pestalotiopsis diploclisia (BCC 35283). The structures of these compounds were elucidated by analysis of 2D-NMR and HR-MS data. The known pestalotioquinol A displayed antimalarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum K1 with an IC50 value of 19.0 μM, while pestalotioquinol G displayed weak cytotoxic activity against Vero cell lines with an IC50 value of 47.9 μM.

Numerous new taxa and classifications of Dothideomycetes have been published following the last monograph of families of Dothideomycetes in 2013. A recent publication by Honsanan et al. in 2020 expanded information of families in Dothideomycetidae and Pleosporomycetidae with modern classifications. In this paper, we provide a refined updated document on orders and familiesincertae sedisof Dothideomycetes. Each family is provided with an updated description, notes, including figures to represent the morphology, a list of accepted genera, and economic and ecological significances. We also provide phylogenetic trees for each order. In this study, 31 orders which consist 50 families are assigned as ordersincertae sedisin Dothideomycetes, and 41 families are treated as familiesincertae sedisdue to lack of molecular or morphological evidence. The new order, Catinellales, and four new families,Catinellaceae,Morenoinaceae NeobuelliellaceaeandThyrinulaceaeare introduced. Seven genera (Neobuelliella,Pseudomicrothyrium,Flagellostrigula,Swinscowia,Macroconstrictolumina,Pseudobogoriella, andSchummia) are introduced. Seven new species (Acrospermum urticae,Bogoriella complexoluminata,Dothiorella ostryae,Dyfrolomyces distoseptatus,Macroconstrictolumina megalateralis,Patellaria microspora, andPseudomicrothyrium thailandicum) are introduced base on morphology and phylogeny, together with two new records/reports and five new collections from different families. Ninety new combinations are also provided in this paper.

During our studies of microfungi from Thailand, Triadelphia hexaformispora sp. nov. collected from decaying wood in a freshwater habitat in Nan Province, Thailand, is described and illustrated. Based on newly generated sequences of the nuclear ribosomal DNA and partial sequence of the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase, Triadelphia species clustered in two monophyletic sister clades in Triadelphiaceae (Microascales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes), one clade accommodates T. heterospora, the type species of Triadelphia, T. diversa, T. loudetiae, T. hexaformisspora, and T. romanica and the second clade incudes T. moubasheri, T. pulvinata, and T. disseminata. Two other species, Triadelphia stilboidea and T. synnematofera (morphological data only) group in a separate clade for which we propose the new genus Synnematotriadelphia. Molecular clock analyses suggest that Triadelphiaceae evolved in the middle Cretaceous, ca. 105 (74–142) million years ago.

This article provides an outline of the classification of the kingdom Fungi (including fossil fungi. i.e. dispersed spores, mycelia, sporophores, mycorrhizas). We treat 19 phyla of fungi. These are Aphelidiomycota, Ascomycota, Basidiobolomycota, Basidiomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Calcarisporiellomycota, Caulochytriomycota, Chytridiomycota, Entomophthoromycota, Entorrhizomycota, Glomeromycota, Kickxellomycota, Monoblepharomycota, Mortierellomycota, Mucoromycota, Neocallimastigomycota, Olpidiomycota, Rozellomycota and Zoopagomycota. The placement of all fungal genera is provided at the class-, order- and family-level. The described number of species per genus is also given. Notes are provided of taxa for which recent changes or disagreements have been presented. Fungus-like taxa that were traditionally treated as fungi are also incorporated in this outline (i.e. Eumycetozoa, Dictyosteliomycetes, Ceratiomyxomycetes and Myxomycetes). Four new taxa are introduced: Amblyosporida ord. nov. Neopereziida ord. nov. and Ovavesiculida ord. nov. in Rozellomycota, and Protosporangiaceae fam. nov. in Dictyosteliomycetes. Two different classifications (in outline section and in discussion) are provided for Glomeromycota and Leotiomycetes based on recent studies. The phylogenetic reconstruction of a four-gene dataset (18S and 28S rRNA, RPB1, RPB2) of 433 taxa is presented, including all currently described orders of fungi., Nalin N. The class Dothideomycetes is the largest and most ecologically diverse class of fungi, comprising endophytes, epiphytes, saprobes, human and plant pathogens, lichens, and lichenicolous, nematode trapping and rock-inhabiting taxa. Members of this class are mainly characterized by bitunicate asci with fissitunicate dehiscence, and occur on broad range of hosts in aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Since the last monograph of families of Dothideomycetes in 2013, numerous novel species, genera, families and orders have been discovered. This has expanded information which has led to the modern classification in Dothideomycetes. In this paper, we provide a refined updated document on families of Dothideomycetes with emphasis on Dothideomycetidae and Pleosporomycetidae. We accept three orders with 25 families and four orders with 94 families in Dothideomycetidae and Pleosporomycetidae, respectively. The new family Paralophiostomataceae is introduced in Pleosporales. Each family is provided with an updated description, notes, including figures to represent the morphology, list of accepted genera, and economic and ecological significances. We also provide an overall phylogenetic tree of families in Dothideomycetes based on combined analysis of LSU, SSU, rpb-2 and tefl sequence data, and phylogenetic trees for each order in Dothideomycetidae and Pleosporomycetidae. Family-level trees are provided for the families which include several genera such as Mycosphaerellaceae and Teratosphaeriaceae. Two new genera (Ligninsphaeriopsis and Paralophiostoma) are introduced. Five new species (Biatrisopora borsei, Comoclathris galatellae, Ligninsphaeriopsis thailandica, Paralophiostoma hysterioides and Torula thailandica) are introduced based on morphology and phylogeny, together with nine new reports and seven new collections from different families.

Eight eremophilanolides (1, 2, 5–8, 10, and 12), 7-epi-tessaric acid (13), an eremophilane (14), and five known compounds, mairetolide F (3), 13-hydroxymairetolide F (4), 3α-hydroxymairetolide A (9), xylareremophil (11), and (3R,4R)-4-hydroxy-5-methylmellein (15), were isolated from the mangrove fungus BCC 60405 belonging to the family Xylariaceae. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis. The isolated compounds were evaluated for antimalarial, antibacterial, antituberculosis and cytotoxic activities. All compound were inactive except for compound 6 that showed weak cytotoxicity against Vero cells (African green monkey kidney fibroblast cells) with an IC50 of 49.6 μg/mL.

Sporothrix schenkii is a dimorphic fungus that causes infections in both humans and animals. We report on 25 S. schenkii isolates collected in 2017 from humans and cats clinically diagnosed with sporotrichosis, in Malaysia. These isolates were phenotypically identified as S. schenkii sensu lato and further defined as S. schenckii sensu stricto based on partial calmodulin gene sequence. Isolates from both humans and cats were genotypically identical but displayed phenotypic variation. Phylogenetic analyses based on partial calmodulin sequence showed that the Malaysian isolates clustered with global S. schenkii sensu stricto strains, in particular, of the AFLP type E. This analysis also revealed that partial calmodulin sequence alone was sufficient for classifying global S. schenckii sensu stricto strains into their respective AFLP types, from A to E. The genetically conserved S. schenkii sensu stricto species isolated from humans and cats is suggestive of a clonal strain present in Malaysia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on molecular identification of Sporothrix schenkii strains from human infections in Malaysia. Further studies are required in order to elucidate the clonal nature of Malaysian S. schenkii isolates. Our findings indicate the presence of a predominant S. schenkii genotype in the environment, causing infections in both cats and humans in Malaysia.

Index Fungorum, Species Fungorum and MycoBank are the key fungal nomenclature and taxonomic databases that can be sourced to find taxonomic details concerning fungi, while DNA sequence data can be sourced from the NCBI, EBI and UNITE databases. Nomenclature and ecological data on freshwater fungi can be accessed on http://fungi.life.illinois.edu/ , while http://www.marinespecies.org/provides a comprehensive list of names of marine organisms, including information on their synonymy. Previous websites however have little information on marine fungi and their ecology, beside articles that deal with marine fungi, especially those published in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries may not be accessible to those working in third world countries. To address this problem, a new website www.marinefungi.org was set up and is introduced in this paper. This website provides a search facility to genera of marine fungi, full species descriptions, key to species and illustrations, an up to date classification of all recorded marine fungi which includes all fungal groups (Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Chytridiomycota, Mucoromycota and fungus-like organisms e.g. Thraustochytriales), and listing recent publications. Currently, 1257 species are listed in the marine fungi website ( www.marinefungi.org ), in 539 genera, 74 orders, 168 families, 20 classes and five phyla, with new taxa continuing to be described. The website has curators with specialist mycological expertise who help to provide update data on the classification of marine fungi. This article also reviews knowledge of marine fungi covering a wide range of topics: their higher classification, ecology and world distribution, role in energy transfer in the oceans, origin and new chemical structures. An updated classification of marine fungi is also included. We would like to invite all mycologists to contribute to this innovative website.

Because endophytic fungi are widely known for producing secondary metabolites and bioactive compounds, they are of interest to pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Many species are found in mangrove forests that are habitats for marine animals, especially in their early life stages. In this research, we screened 42 endophytic fungi originating from Thai mangrove forests for inhibitors of biofilm and planktonic cell growth of 7 Vibrio isolates. Some of these isolates were collected from shrimp ponds exhibiting early mortality syndrome (EMS) and diagnosed as outbreaks of acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) that is caused by specific isolates of Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VPAHPND). Cell-free supernatants (CFS) of two fungal isolates (MCR433 and MCR 440) that inhibited biofilm growth for at least 5 out of the 7 Vibrio isolates were chosen for further study in shrimp feeding trials. One (MCR433) had strong biofilm inhibition and the other (MCR 440) weak biofilm inhibition for VPAHPND. Feed supplementation with CFS of MCR 433 protected shrimp against AHPND (72% mean survival) when compared to control shrimp given un-supplemented feed (20% mean survival) or given feed supplemented with CFS of MCR 440 (0% survival). Histological analysis of the hepatopancreas confirmed that shrimp given feed supplemented with MCR 433 showed little or no signs of AHPND pathology while shrimp in the other two groups showed histopathology typical AHPND. Using a multigene molecular typing approach, both MCR 433 and MCR 440 were identified as distinct members of the order Muyocopronales, class Dothideomycetes and phylum Ascomycota with differing biological activities. Further research is needed on the lead compounds generated by these strains. Those from MCR 433 have potential for use as feed additives against VPAHPND as an alternative to antibiotics.

Conioscypha nakagirii, a novel fungus, is described and illustrated from decaying submerged wood collected in a small stream in Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand. Morphologically, it differs from known Conioscypha species and similar taxa in that it has large, turbinate to pyriform, black and smooth-walled conidia. Phylogenetic analysis of three loci (nuc 18S and nuc 28S, and RPB2) supports a placement of this taxon as a new species in Conioscypha (Conioscyphales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes), as a sister group to a clade including C. lignicola, C. japonica, C. varia and C. peruensis, and shares some morphological characteristics with C. fabiformis and C. taiwaniana. Both morphological and molecular evidence justifies the introduction of the new species, C. nakagirii.

This is the sixth in a series of papers where we bring collaborating mycologists together to produce a set of notes of several taxa of fungi. In this study we introduce a new family Fuscostagonosporaceae in Dothideomycetes. The type species of Ascotrichella hawksworthii (Xylariales genera incertae sedis), Biciliopsis leptogiicola (Sordariomycetes genera incertae sedis), Brooksia tropicalis (Micropeltidaceae), Bryochiton monascus (Teratosphaeriaceae), Bryomyces scapaniae (Pseudoperisporiaceae), Buelliella minimula (Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis), Carinispora nypae (Pseudoastrosphaeriellaceae), Cocciscia hammeri (Verrucariaceae), Endoxylina astroidea (Diatrypaceae), Exserohilum turcicum (Pleosporaceae), Immotthia hypoxylon (Roussoellaceae), Licopolia franciscana (Vizellaceae), Murispora rubicunda (Amniculicolaceae) and Doratospora guianensis (synonymized under Rizalia guianensis, Trichosphaeriaceae) were re-examined and descriptions, illustrations and discussion on their familial placement are given based on phylogeny and morphological data. New host records or new country reports are provided for Chlamydotubeufia huaikangplaensis, Colletotrichum fioriniae, Diaporthe subclavata, Diatrypella vulgaris, Immersidiscosia eucalypti, Leptoxyphium glochidion, Stemphylium vesicarium, Tetraploa yakushimensis and Xepicula leucotricha. Diaporthe baccae is synonymized under Diaporthe rhusicola. A reference specimen is provided for Periconia minutissima. Updated phylogenetic trees are provided for most families and genera. We introduce the new basidiomycete species Agaricus purpurlesquameus, Agaricus rufusfibrillosus, Lactifluus holophyllus, Lactifluus luteolamellatus, Lactifluus pseudohygrophoroides, Russula benwooii, Russula hypofragilis, Russula obscurozelleri, Russula parapallens, Russula phoenicea, Russula pseudopelargonia, Russula pseudotsugarum, Russula rhodocephala, Russula salishensis, Steccherinum amapaense, Tephrocybella constrictospora, Tyromyces amazonicus and Tyromyces angulatus and provide updated trees to the genera. Lauriomyces is an anamorphic genus comprising nine species, found growing on terrestrial leaf litter and wood in tropical habitats. The genus is characterized by solitary or synnematous, pigmented conidiophores bearing acropetal chains of unicellular, hyaline conidia.Amultigene (SSU, LSU & 5.8S) analysis of Lauriomyces strains reveal three cryptic new species, which are described, illustrated, and published here: L. acerosus, L. basitruncatus, and L. glumateus spp. nov. Lauriomyces glumateus is characterized by narrowly oval conidia while conidia of L. acerosus are cylindrical with acute ends and those of L. basitruncatus are cylindrical with truncate base. The nine Lauriomyces species sampled form a monophyletic clade in the Leotiomycetes, with high molecular support and all with a morphology typical for the genus. The new combination Dematioscypha catenata is made for Haplographium catenatum in compliance with the one name protocol.

A new species of Helicascus, H. mangrovei, on dead intertidal mangrove wood was collected. Morphology of this fungus was studied and DNA sequence analyses of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS), small subunit (SSU) and large subunit (LSU) ribosomal (r) DNA, the translation elongation factor 1-alpha gene (TEF-1α) and the RNA polymerase II gene (RPB2) were used to determine the phylogeny of this fungus. Helicascus mangrovei possesses semi-immersed lenticular ascomata and stroma-like structures covered with a carbonaceous, dark brown to black pseudoclypeus. Its ascomata do not have a separate locule. The bitunicate asci have an ocular chamber and a long stipe. Ascospores are obovoid, 1-septate, uniseriate, unequally two-celled, slightly constricted at the septum, thick-walled, with larger brownish apical cells and smaller basal cells, one apiculate end, hyaline when young, becoming dark brown when mature. Helicascus mangrovei forms a well-supported clade within Helicascus species and is closely related to marine species within the Morosphaeriaceae, Pleosporales. Based on the morphological features and molecular data, a new marine species of Helicascus is proposed.

Two new trichothecenes ( 1 and 2 ) and a new chloroderivative of a trichothecene analogue ( 3 ) together with four known trichothecenes, crotocin, trichothecin, 8-deoxytrichothecinol B, and a trichothecene analogue, were isolated from the fungus Acremonium crotocinigenum BCC 20012. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis. Among the tested metabolites, trichothecin itself showed strongest antimalarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum K1, and cytotoxic activity against Vero cell lines with IC 50 values of 0.05 and 0.13 μg/mL, respectively.

Sordariomycetes is one of the largest classes of Ascomycota that comprises a highly diverse range of fungi characterized mainly by perithecial ascomata and inoperculate unitunicate asci. The class includes many important plant pathogens, as well as endophytes, saprobes, epiphytes, coprophilous and fungicolous, lichenized or lichenicolous taxa. They occur in terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats worldwide. This paper reviews the 107 families of the class Sordariomycetes and provides a modified backbone tree based on phylogenetic analysis of four combined loci, with a maximum five representative taxa from each family, where available. This paper brings together for the first time, since Barrs’ 1990 Prodromus, descriptions, notes on the history, and plates or illustrations of type or representative taxa of each family, a list of accepted genera, including asexual genera and a key to these taxa of Sordariomycetes. Delineation of taxa is supported where possible by molecular data. The outline is based on literature to the end of 2015 and the Sordariomycetes now comprises six subclasses, 32 orders, 105 families and 1331 genera. The family Obryzaceae and Pleurotremataceae are excluded from the class.

This paper provides recommendations of one name for use among pleomorphic genera in Dothideomycetes by the Working Group on Dothideomycetes established under the auspices of the International Commission on the Taxonomy of Fungi (ICTF). A number of these generic names are proposed for protection because they do not have priority and/or the generic name selected for use is asexually typified. Tirisporella beccariana, a monotypic marine ascomycete, commonly occurs on the lower base of fronds and rhizomes of the brackish water palm, Nypa fruticans. This fungus has globose to subglobose ascomata, immersed to superficial, ostiolate and periphysate, three layered peridium. It has cylindrical bitunicate-like asci, short peduncle, thick-walled, brown ascospores, 4–7 septate, falcate to lunate, verrucose, apical cell appendaged, hyaline basal cell pointed. Taxonomically it was originally assigned to the Dothideomycetes incertae sedis based on the bitunicate-like asci. During on-going investigations of mangrove fungi in Thailand, the fungus was found in intertidal regions in Trang and Trat provinces, Thailand. Maximum parsimony, likelihood and Bayesian analyses using partial SSU and LSU rDNA sequences place T. beccariana in the Diaporthales, Sordariomycetidae, Sordariomycetes; however, the familial level relationship was unidentified. The marine fungus Paradendryphiella arenariae BCC 17999, isolated from Thailand, was investigated for bioactive secondary metabolite production. Large-scale fermentation in liquid medium yielded several known compounds, including tricycloalternarenes 2b (also known as ACTG-toxin D), 3a, 3b, A, H, and 11a, as well as infectopyrone. Tricycloalternarenes 2b and 3b displayed weak cytotoxic activity against the human small-cell lung cancer cell line NCI-H187.

This paper provides an updated outline of the Sordariomycetes and a backbone tree incorporating asexual and sexual genera in the class. Based on phylogeny and morphology we introduced three subclasses; Diaporthomycetidae, Lulworthiomycetidae and Meliolomycetidae and five orders; Amplistromatales, Annulatascales, Falcocladiales, Jobellisiales and Togniniales. The outline is based on literature to the end of 2014 and the backbone tree published in this paper. Notes for 397 taxa with information, such as new family and genera novelties, novel molecular data published since the Outline of Ascomycota 2009, and new links between sexual and asexual genera and thus synonymies, are provided. The Sordariomycetes now comprises six subclasses, 28 orders, 90 families and 1344 genera. In addition a list of 829 genera with uncertain placement in Sordariomycetes is also provided.

Article 59.1, of the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi, and Plants (ICN; Melbourne Code), which addresses the nomenclature of pleomorphic fungi, became effective from 30 July 2011. Since that date, each fungal species can have one nomenclaturally correct name in a particular classification. All other previously used names for this species will be considered as synonyms. The older generic epithet takes priority over the younger name. Any widely used younger names proposed for use, must comply with Art. 57.2 and their usage should be approved by the Nomenclature Committee for Fungi (NCF). In this paper, we list all genera currently accepted by us in Dothideomycetes (belonging to 23 orders and 110 families), including pleomorphic and non-pleomorphic genera. In the case of pleomorphic genera, we follow the rulings of the current ICN and propose single generic names for future usage. The taxonomic placements of 1261 genera are listed as an outline. Protected names and suppressed names for 34 pleomorphic genera are listed separately. Notes and justifications are provided for possible proposed names after the list of genera. Notes are also provided on recent advances in our understanding of asexual and sexual morph linkages in Dothideomycetes. A phylogenetic tree based on four gene analyses supported 23 orders and 75 families, while 35 families still lack molecular data.

The novel compounds, astronypyrone, astronyquinone, and astronyurea, together with three known compounds, xestodecalactone A, ent-coryoctalactone B, and dimethoxy-O-methylpulvinone were isolated from the marine-derived fungus Astrosphaeriella nypae BCC 5335. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry data. Astronypyrone possesses a 2-pyrone derivative fused with a tetrahydrofuran moiety via a dihydropyran unit, while the 2-pyrone ring is substituted by a naphthoquinone skeleton in astronyquinone.

Knowledge of the relationships and thus the classification of fungi, has developed rapidly with increasingly widespread use of molecular techniques, over the past 10-15 years, and continues to accelerate. Several genera have been found to be polyphyletic, and their generic concepts have subsequently been emended. New names have thus been introduced for species which are phylogenetically distinct from the type species of particular genera. The ending of the separate naming of morphs of the same species in 2011, has also caused changes in fungal generic names. In order to facilitate access to all important changes, it was desirable to compile these in a single document. The present article provides a list of generic names of Ascomycota (approximately 6500 accepted names published to the end of 2016), including those which are lichen-forming. Notes and summaries of the changes since the last edition of ‘Ainsworth & Bisby’s Dictionary of the Fungi’ in 2008 are provided. The notes include the number of accepted species, classification, type species (with location of the type material), culture availability, life-styles, distribution, and selected publications that have appeared since 2008. This work is intended to provide the foundation for updating the ascomycete component of the “Without prejudice list of generic names of Fungi” published in 2013, which will be developed into a list of protected generic names. This will be subjected to the XIXth International Botanical Congress in Shenzhen in July 2017 agreeing to a modification in the rules relating to protected lists, and scrutiny by procedures determined by the Nomenclature Committee for Fungi (NCF). The previously invalidly published generic names Barriopsis, Collophora (as Collophorina), Cryomyces, Dematiopleospora, Heterospora (as Heterosporicola), Lithophila, Palmomyces (as Palmaria) and Saxomyces are validated, as are two previously invalid family names, Bartaliniaceae and Wiesneriomycetaceae. The species diversity of marine fungi was investigated in eastern and southern Thailand. Senescent and decaying woody substrata were collected from intertidal mangrove forests located in Trat, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Phetchaburi Provinces. A total of 99 fungal species was recorded. These included 84 Ascomycota (85%), two Basidiomycota (2%) and 13 asexual fungi (13%). The average percentage occurrence of the fungi recorded from each site ranged from 0.1% to 13.7%. We describe three new species of Fulvifomes from Thailand, all of which grow on Xylocarpus granatum, a major mangrove tree species in southeastern Asia. Fulvifomes xylocarpicola sp. nov. is characterized by the perennial and sessile basidiocarps, woody context without a distinct crust, pores 4–6/mm, a dimitic hyphal system both in the context and trama, broadly ellipsoid basidiospores measuring 4–5.5 × 3.5–4.5 μm, and occurrence on the stem of X. granatum. Fulvifomes siamensis sp. nov. is characterized by the perennial and sessile basidiocarps, woody context without a crust, pores 7–8/mm, a monomitic hyphal system in the context, subglobose basidiospores measuring 4.5–6 × 4–5 μm, and occurrence on the root or butt of X. granatum. Fulvifomes halophilus sp. nov. is characterized by perennial, sessile basidiocarps, leathery to corky context with a crust near the pileus surface, pores 5–8/mm, a subdimitic hyphal system in the context, subglobose basidiospores measuring 4–5.5 × 3.5–5 μm, and occurrence on the root or butt of X. granatum. Fulvifomes mangrovicus comb. nov. is proposed for Fomes mangrovicus. A key to the worldwide species of Fulvifomes is provided.

The taxonomic position of the marine fungi referred to the TBM clade is re-evaluated along with the marine species Chaetosphaeria chaetosa, and the terrestrial asexual genus Falcocladium. Phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences of two ribosomal nuclear loci of the above taxa and those previous recognized as the TBM clade suggest that they form a distinct clade amongst the Hypocreales, Microascales, Savoryellales, Coronophorales and Melanosporales in the Hypocreomycetidae. Four well-supported subclades in the “TBM clade” are discerned including: 1) the Juncigena subclade, 2) the Etheirophora and Swampomyces s. s. subclade, 3) the Falcocladium subclade and 4) the Torpedospora subclade. Chaetosphaeria chaetosa does not group in the Chaetosphaeriales but together with Swampomyces aegyptiacus and S. clavatispora they group in the Juncigena subclade, while Falcocladium forms a sister group to the Etheirophora and Swampomycess. s. subclade. Tamhinispora saraburiensis sp. nov. was collected on decaying culms of bamboo in Saraburi Province, Thailand. Tamhinispora saraburiensis is characterized as dark brown to black, obpyriform, and dictyoseptate and has conidia with long appendages arising from the conidial tip. Phylogenetic analyses of the combined ITS and LSU rDNA sequence data demonstrated that this species formed distinctly from other species and that it belongs in the family Tubeufiaceae. Tamhinispora saraburiensis is therefore introduced here with a description, morphological illustrations and molecular data. A key to the species of Tamhinispora is provided.

A new species of a hyphomycetous fungus, Hermatomyces trangensis, was collected during an investigation of the diversity of palm fungi in Na Yong district, Trang province, Southern Thailand, and is introduced in this paper based on morphological and molecular evidence. The fungus is characterized by the production of only one type of conidia, globose or subglobose in front view, broadly ellipsoidal or oblong in lateral view, with dark brown to black central cells and subhyaline to pale brown peripheral cells and sporulation in culture. Phylogenetic analyses of combined SSU rDNA, LSU rDNA, ITS rDNA, TEF1 and RPB2 sequence data using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference approaches placed the fungus within a strongly supported clade with other Hermatomyces species within the family Hermatomycetaceae (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes). Morphologically, it is similar to other taxa with only one type of conidia such as H. sphaericus, H. sphaericoides and H. verrucosus but molecular data clearly support H. trangensis as distinct from those species.

Dothideomycetes comprise a highly diverse range of fungi characterized mainly by asci with two wall layers (bitunicate asci) and often with fissitunicate dehiscence. Many species are saprobes, with many asexual states comprising important plant pathogens. They are also endophytes, epiphytes, fungicolous, lichenized, or lichenicolous fungi. They occur in terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats in almost every part of the world. We accept 105 families in Dothideomycetes with the new families Anteagloniaceae, Bambusicolaceae, Biatriosporaceae, Lichenoconiaceae, Muyocopronaceae, Paranectriellaceae, Roussoellaceae, Salsugineaceae, Seynesiopeltidaceae and Thyridariaceae introduced in this paper. Each family is provided with a description and notes, including asexual and asexual states, and if more than one genus is included, the type genus is also characterized. Each family is provided with at least one figure-plate, usually illustrating the type genus, a list of accepted genera, including asexual genera, and a key to these genera. A phylogenetic tree based on four gene combined analysis add support for 64 of the families and 22 orders, including the novel orders, Dyfrolomycetales, Lichenoconiales, Lichenotheliales, Monoblastiales, Natipusillales, Phaeotrichales and Strigulales. The paper is expected to provide a working document on Dothideomycetes which can be modified as new data comes to light. It is hoped that by illustrating types we provide stimulation and interest so that more work is carried out in this remarkable group of fungi.

A new mangrove fungus collected in Tioman Island, Malaysia, is morphologically similar to marine species of Saccardoella. It also phylogenetically groups with Saccardoella rhizophorae in the Dothideomycetes, based on combined analysis of partial SSU, LSU rRNA and TEF1 gene sequences. The new fungus and S. rhizophorae form a well-supported clade with Acrospermum spp. in the Acrospermaceae. Both species therefore do not belong in Saccardoella, a genus with unitunicate asci. A new genus, Dyfrolomyces, is established to accommodate the new fungus (Dyfrolomyces tiomanensis) while the three marine Saccardoella species (S. mangrovei, S. marinospora, S. rhizophorae) are transferred to the new genus. Dyfrolomyces is characterized by forming a clypeus on substrates, with immersed perithecial ascomata, bitunicate/fissitunicate asci and multi-septate ascospores with/without a sheath. This study reports the frequency of decay (stem/butt rot) of Xylocarpus granatum trees at Hat Khanom-Mu Ko Thale Tai National Park, Nakhonsithammarat province, and other locations in Thailand, and the identification of purported causal basidiomycetes based on morphological and molecular analyses. Four survey plots at Hat Khanom-Mu Ko Thale Tai National Park were established and the incidence of butt rot determined. Percentage stem/butt rot incidence of X. granatum trees varied from 40.9 to 94.4 % with an average of 85.5 % along all four Plots. Trees in Plot 2 supported the heaviest incidence rate (94.4 %), with the lowest rate in Plot 3 (40.9 %). Ninety-two basidiomes were collected, and 46 fungal strains (50 %) isolated into axenic culture, the majority associated with tree roots (68.5 % of all collections) with 31.5 % from the tree trunks. Molecular results, based on LSU and ITS1, 2, 5.8 S rDNA analyses, confirmed that all samples belonged to the poroid genus Fulvifomes in the Hymenochaetaceae within the Hymenochaetales, Basidiomycota. The 43 specimens sequenced grouped into three clades; one clade comprised specimens isolated from only the trunks and branches (14 strains), while the remainders were from roots (29 strains) and shown to be salt tolerant. The stem/butt rot strains formed unique phylotypes which did not group with other known Fulvifomes species.

The region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 used as the animal barcode was excluded as a potential marker, because it is difficult to amplify in fungi, often includes large introns, and can be insufficiently variable. Three subunits from the nuclear ribosomal RNA cistron were compared together with regions of three representative proteincoding genes (largest subunit of RNA polymerase II, second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II, and minichromosome maintenance protein). Although the protein-coding gene regions often had a higher percent of correct identification compared with ribosomal markers, low PCR amplification and sequencing success eliminated them as candidates for a universal fungal barcode. Among the regions of the ribosomal cistron, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region has the highest probability of successful identification for the broadest range of fungi, with the most clearly defined barcode gap between inter- and intraspecific variation. The nuclear ribosomal large subunit, a popular phylogenetic marker in certain groups, had superior species resolution in some taxonomic groups, such as the early diverging lineages and the ascomycete yeasts, but was otherwise slightly inferior to the ITS. The nuclear ribosomal small subunit has poor species-level resolution in fungi. ITS will be formally proposed for adoption as the primary fungal barcode marker to the Consortium for the Barcode of Life, with the possibility that supplementary barcodes may be developed for particular narrowly circumscribed taxonomic groups.

Trematosphaeriaceae fam. nov. is introduced to accommodate the genera Falciformispora, Halomassarina and Trematosphaeria. The main distinguishing characters of the family are medium-sized rounded ascomata with a papillate ostiole, a relatively wide, coriaceous peridium, cellular pseudoparaphyses and cylindro-clavate asci. The ascospores are two-celled or many celled, hyaline or brown. Phylogenetic analysis inferred from combined nuclear SSU and LSU rRNA and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF-1-alpha) and second largest subunit of RNA polymerase (RPB2) datasets show that these genera form a strongly supported cluster within the Pleosporales. The type species of each genus is illustrated and briefly discussed. Asteromassaria pulchra has been included in the family in previous publications; however, since the type of the genus (A. macrospora) was not included in the phylogenetic analysis, the familial placement cannot be confirmed. Genera assigned to the Jahnulales are morphologically diverse, especially in ascospores equipped with or without appendages, sheaths or apical caps. They are predominantly freshwater fungi occurring on woody substrata, with Manglicola guatemalensis, Xylomyces chlamydosporus and X. rhizophorae the only species known from marine habitats. The order Jahnulales with 4 teleomorphic genera: Jahnula (15 species), Aliquandostipite (5), Megalohypha (1), Manglicola (2) and the anamorphic genera Brachiosphaera (2), Speiropsis (9), Xylomyces (8), amounting to a total of 42 species, is reviewed and nomenclatural changes are proposed. Twenty species are treated at the molecular level, with 94 sequences, 13 of which are newly generated for this review. Three species are rejected (Speiropsis irregularis, Xylomyces aquaticus, X. elegans) while the phylogenetic placement of 6 Xylomyces, 7 Speiropsis, 1 Brachiosphaera and 1 Manglicola require molecular data to confirm their placement in the order. Sequences are derived from ex-holotype isolates and new collections made in Thailand. Most taxa are included in the family Aliquandostipitaceae and a new family Manglicolaceae is erected for the marine ascomycete Manglicola guatemalensis with its large ascomata (1,100–1,750 × 290–640 μm), wide ostioles and ascospores that are fusiform, unequally one-septate with the apical cell larger than the turbinate basal cell and bear apical gelatinous appendages. The genus Jahnula is polyphyletic grouping in three clades with J. aquatica, J. granulosa, J. rostrata, J. potamophila and Megalohypha aqua-dulces in the Jahnula sensu stricto clade. No taxonomical changes are proposed for Jahnula species not grouping in the Jahnula sensu stricto clade, until further species are isolated and sequenced.

The taxonomic placement of freshwater and marine Savoryella species has been widely debated, and the genus has been tentatively assigned to various orders in the Sordariomycetes. The genus is characterized as possessing paraphyses that deliquesce early, elongate, clavate to cylindrical asci with a poorly developed apical ring and versicolored, three-septate ascospores. We performed two combined phylogenetic analyses of different genes: (i) partial small subunit rRNA (SSU), large subunit rRNA (LSU), DNA-dependent RNA polymerase II largest subunit (rpb2) dataset and (ii) SSU rDNA, LSU rDNA, DNA-dependent RNA polymerase II largest subunit (rpb1 and rpb2), translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1), the 5.8S ribosomal DNA (5.8S rDNA) dataset. Our results indicate that Savoryella species formed a monophyletic group within the Sordariomycetes but showed no affinity to the Hypocreales, Halosphaeriales (now Microascales), Sordariales and Xylariales, despite earlier assignments to these orders. Savoryella, Ascotaiwania and Ascothailandia (and its anamorph, Canalisporium) formed a new lineage that has invaded both marine and freshwater habitats, indicating that these genera share a common ancestor and are closely related. Because they show no clear relationship with any named order we erect a new order Savoryellales in the subclass Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes. The genera Savoryella and Ascothailandia are monophyletic, while the position of Ascotaiwania is unresolved. All three genera are phylogenetically related and form a distinct clade similar to the unclassified group of marine ascomycetes comprising the genera Swampomyces, Torpedospora and Juncigera (TBM clade: Torpedospora/Bertia/Melanospora) in the Hypocreomycetidae incertae sedis.

Ascothailandia grenadoidia gen. et sp. nov. is described and illustrated from submerged wood (Wrightia tomentosa) in a stream at Hala Bala Wildlife Sanctuary, southern Thailand. The new genus (teleomorph) is characterized by perithecoid, globose, dark brown, ostiolate ascomata, paraphysate, asci cylindrical, unitunicate with a prominent J-refractive apical ring and versicolurus, 3-euseptate ascospores. Ascospores germinated producing a Canalisporium (C. grenadoidia sp. nov.) anamorph. The morphological characterization of this new fungus is reported and compared with the genera Ascotaiwania and Savoryella. Phylogenetic analyses of the combined partial 18S, 28S ribosomal DNA and internal transcribed spacer, including 5.8S regions, of Ascothailandia grenadoidia and 10 Canalisporium species were undertaken and analyzed with maximum parsimony and Bayesian methods. The molecular data indicate that A. grenadoidia is closely related to Canalisporiumelegans in the Sordariomycetes, Hypocreomycetidae, order incertae sedis. Both morphological and molecular characterization provides sufficient evidence to support the description of a new genus. A key to Canalisporium species is provided.

A fungal disease with aerial-root-liked gall symptoms on Cinnamomum subavenium in Khao Yai National Park, Northeastern Thailand is reported, and the causative agent identified as Laurobasidium hachijoense . Cultures from the Thai specimens, as well as the type culture from Japan, were sequenced for LSU and ITS genes. Analysis of these gene sequences showed that the Thai isolates clustered with the type strain of Laurobasidium hachijoense . This is the first report of this fungus on a new host and in Thailand. Morphology of this fungus from the Thai specimens as well as the seasonal symptom in the natural forest are described and illustrated. Laurobasidiaceae is proposed as a new family for Laurobasidium . It was nested in a highly supported clade with the Cryptobasidiaceae and a sister clade to the Branchybasidiaceae, Graphoilaceae and Exobasidiaceae clades within the order Exobasidiales. Laurobasidiaceae morphologically possesses basidial sterigmata, thin-walled basidiospores with an abaxial hilum, and sporulating on the surface of the host tissues. It is unique from other families in the Exobasidiales in causing aerial-root-like galls on the host plant. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that strains of Acaromyces ingoldii grouped together with Laurobasidium hachijoense indicating they are conspecific. Morphological examination also confirmed that these two taxa are the same fungus. Laurobasidium hachijoense is proposed as the valid name based on its occupation of the initial type material of this organism, and the monotypic genus Acaromyces becomes a synonym of Laurobasidium . Exobasidium cinnamomi is also considered a Laurobasidium species based on its morphology and the stag-horn-like galls on a lauraceous host. The taxonomy of the Laurobasidiaceae is discussed.

The poorly known marine ascomycete Manglicola guatemalensis from Trang and Trat provinces, Thailand, were collected in 2005 and 2006 on the brackish water palm Nypa fruticans. This fungus is known only from two previous collections. This paper reports on the morphological characteristics and molecular phylogeny of this unique marine bitunicate ascomycete. Manglicola guatemalensis has large clavate to obtusely fusiform ascomata, wide ostioles, bitunicate asci, cylindrical, thick-walled, unequally one-septate ascospores, constricted at the septum, apical cell larger, chestnut-brown and a smaller light brown basal cell. Ascospores germinate readily, always from the basal cell. Four isolates from different locations were selected for the phylogenetic study. Regions of the rDNA gene, including SSU and LSU, were sequenced and combined. Molecular data places M. guatemalensis in the Jahnulales with high bootstrap support; all strains are monophyletic. In the combined SSU and LSU analyses the Jahnulales comprises four subclades, A, B, C and D. Subclade A comprises Jahnula species and two anamorphic fungi, Brachiosphaera tropicalis and Xylomyces chlamydosporus. In subclade B Manglicola strains form a sister group of the Aliquandostipite species Aliquandostipite crystallinus, A. khaoyaiensis, Jahnula siamensiae and Patescospora separans. Subclade C comprises Jahnula species, Jahnula aquatica, J. granulosa and J. rostrata, while Megalohypha aqua-dulces constitutes subclade D. Therefore Manglicola forms another lineage of marine fungi.
