Plants release a wealth of metabolites into the rhizosphere that can shape the composition and activity of microbial communities in response to environmental stress. The connection between rhizodeposition and rhizosphere microbiome succession has been suggested, particularly under environmental stress conditions, yet definitive evidence is scarce. In this study, we investigated the relationship between rhizosphere chemistry, microbiome dynamics, and abiotic stress in the bioenergy crop switchgrass grown in a marginal soil under nutrient-limited, moisture-limited, and nitrogen (N)-replete, phosphorus (P)-replete, and NP-replete conditions. We combined 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and LC-MS/MS-based metabolomics to link rhizosphere microbial communities and metabolites. We identified significant changes in rhizosphere metabolite profiles in response to abiotic stress and linked them to changes in microbial communities using network analysis. N-limitation amplified the abundance of aromatic acids, pentoses, and their derivatives in the rhizosphere, and their enhanced availability was linked to the abundance of bacterial lineages from Acidobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, Planctomycetes, and Alphaproteobacteria. Conversely, N-amended conditions increased the availability of N-rich rhizosphere compounds, which coincided with proliferation of Actinobacteria. Treatments with contrasting N availability differed greatly in the abundance of potential keystone metabolites; serotonin and ectoine were particularly abundant in N-replete soils, while chlorogenic, cinnamic, and glucuronic acids were enriched in N-limited soils. Serotonin, the keystone metabolite we identified with the largest number of links to microbial taxa, significantly affected root architecture and growth of rhizosphere microorganisms, highlighting its potential to shape microbial community and mediate rhizosphere plant-microbe interactions.

WHAT IS THIS SUMMARY ABOUT?: This summary provides the results of a study of two treatments for cancer, enfortumab vedotin and pembrolizumab, that were studied together against locally advanced or metastatic urothelial cancer (la/mUC), a cancer that occurs most commonly in the bladder. WHAT WERE THE RESULTS?: In the 45 patients studied, around 16% did have serious side effects, but most side effects were manageable. Twenty-four percent of patients, however, stopped the study treatment because of their side effects. Within about 2 months of starting treatment, most patients (73%) tumors were smaller and stayed smaller, on average, for more than 2 years. WHAT DO THE RESULTS MEAN?: The combination of enfortumab vedotin plus pembrolizumab is a new treatment option for patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial cancer when they cannot receive the typical treatment, cisplatin. Advanced or metastatic urothelial cancer is a type of cancer where the cancer has already spread outside of the bladder or urinary tract.

Remote sensing in agriculture aims to search new methods to monitor fruit at the tree, thus improving the estimation of yield-related variables. Light detection and range (LiDAR) scanning was introduced to obtain geometric and radiometric information from fruit surfaces by means of 3D point clouds. A geometric model to estimate apple size by means of segmented 3D point cloud of fruit is proposed in the present study. The model consists in the approximation of 3D point clouds to a reference shape given by 2D Fourier series expansion. Each point cloud was approximated to its reference shape using an iterative error minimization routine. The geometric model was applied to laboratory and field data of spheres and apples during fruit growth, ranging from 60 to 151 days after full bloom (DAFB). An overall [Formula: see text] between measured and predicted fruit radius of 20.1, 76.8, and 119.1% was found for the geometric model, mean, and maximum Euclidean distance approaches, respectively, including all studied growth periods in field conditions. Moreover, the linear regression on measured and predicted values showed considerably improved coefficient of determination ([Formula: see text]) of the geometric model in comparison to Euclidean distance calculations with [Formula: see text] values of 0.76 and 0.49 for laboratory and field scanned apples, respectively. The data processing method enables fruit monitoring and their application of terrestrial LiDAR sensing in precise orchard management.

Abstract In online single‐sided partial discharge (PD) location, the measured PD reflection patterns are affected by the characteristics of all the components of the associated power network. This paper analyses the performance of a PD location method based on electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR) theory, when interfering reflections contribute to the transient signals emitted by the PD event. The topology analysed is formed from a ring main unit (RMU) in a medium voltage grid with mixed cross‐linked polyethylene and paper‐insulated lead‐covered (PILC) cable sections. The PD reflection patterns, observed at the RMU, are disturbed by the reflections coming from the impedance discontinuities of the circuit and by the reflections coming from the cable ends of the PILC cables connected to the RMU. The simulated configuration is chosen such that classical location techniques tend to fail due to overlapping peaks and other signal distortion. This is because the classic techniques are based on identifying individual reflection peaks from which the PD source can be determined via differences in time of arrival. The numerical investigation shows that the accuracy of the EMTR‐based location method is robust against these effects, achieving a PD localisation with an error less than the 0.1%. The results also show that the EMTR‐based method can localise PDs using a PD monitoring point located somewhere along the network and not necessarily at the line termination.

"γc" cytokines are a family whose receptors share a "common-gamma-chain" signaling moiety, and play central roles in differentiation, homeostasis, and communications of all immunocyte lineages. As a resource to better understand their range and specificity of action, we profiled by RNAseq the immediate-early responses to the main γc cytokines across all immunocyte lineages. The results reveal an unprecedented landscape: broader, with extensive overlap between cytokines (one cytokine doing in one cell what another does elsewhere) and essentially no effects unique to any one cytokine. Responses include a major downregulation component and a broad Myc-controlled resetting of biosynthetic and metabolic pathways. Various mechanisms appear involved: fast transcriptional activation, chromatin remodeling, and mRNA destabilization. Other surprises were uncovered: IL2 effects in mast cells, shifts between follicular and marginal zone B cells, paradoxical and cell-specific cross-talk between interferon and γc signatures, or an NKT-like program induced by IL21 in CD8+ T cells.

PURPOSEThe Brazilian Public Health System (BPHS) serves approximately 71,730 patients with prostate cancer (PC) every year for which androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is the primary treatment for patients with advanced hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (aHSPC). Androgen receptor pathway inhibitors (ARPIs) are not accessible through the BPHS. Using the BPHS as a model, this study assesses the long-term economic effect of surgical versus medical castration in aHSPC treatment to strategize cost reduction and the incorporation of ARPI in developing countries.PATIENTS AND METHODSData of patients with aHSPC (ie, TxN1M0 ineligible for local treatment or TxNxM1) from the BPHS database were analyzed from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2021, using the TECHTRIALS artificial intelligence platform. The main outcomes were quantitative and descriptive analyses as well as a cost analysis of surgical versus chemical castration.RESULTSOf the 274,519 patients with aHSPC who received active treatment during the 11-year study period, 90% (n = 246,683) underwent chemical castration and 10% (n = 27,836) underwent bilateral subcapsular orchiectomy (BSO). The median duration of chemical castration was 28 months. The BPHS spent an estimated total of $665,552,091.40 US dollars (USD) on chemical castration and $5,939,348.47 USD on BSO, respectively. The cost per patient was $2,698 USD and $213.37 USD for chemical castration and BSO, respectively. Hypothetically, if all patients with aHSPC had undergone BSO, the total direct cost for the BPHS would have been $42,774,832.20 USD, saving $622,777,259.20 USD over 11 years, making it possible to offer low-dose abiraterone to 65% of aHSPC patients.CONCLUSIONOn the basis of this extensive financial analysis from the world's largest public health system database, BSO appears to be a valuable alternative to chemical castration for treating aHSPC. In resource-limited environments, the cost savings from using BSO may allow access to drugs that will improve survival such as ARPIs.

Abstract In this study, we aimed to compare imaging-based features of brain function, measured by resting-state fMRI (rsfMRI), with individual characteristics such as age, gender, and total intracranial volume to predict behavioral measures. We developed a machine learning framework based on rsfMRI features in a dataset of 20,000 healthy individuals from the UK Biobank, focusing on temporal complexity and functional connectivity measures. Our analysis across four behavioral phenotypes revealed that both temporal complexity and functional connectivity measures provide comparable predictive performance. However, individual characteristics consistently outperformed rsfMRI features in predictive accuracy, particularly in analyses involving smaller sample sizes. Integrating rsfMRI features with demographic data sometimes enhanced predictive outcomes. The efficacy of different predictive modeling techniques and the choice of brain parcellation atlas were also examined, showing no significant influence on the results. To summarize, while individual characteristics are superior to rsfMRI in predicting behavioral phenotypes, rsfMRI still conveys additional predictive value in the context of machine learning, such as investigating the role of specific brain regions in behavioral phenotypes.

Abstract Background Videos to support learning of clinical skills are effective; however, little is known about the scope and educational quality of the content of freely available online videos demonstrating task-specific training (TST). This review aimed to determine the extent, characteristics of freely available online videos, and whether the content is suitable to guide skill acquisition of task-specific training for neurological physiotherapists and students. Methods A scoping review was conducted. Google video and YouTube were searched in December 2022. Videos that met our eligibility criteria and were explicitly designed for (TST) skill acquisition were included in the report. Results Ten videos met the inclusion criteria and were difficult to find amongst the range of videos available. Most were presented by physiotherapists or occupational therapists, originated from the USA, featured stroke as the condition of the person being treated, and involved a range of interventions (upper limb, constraint induced movement therapy, balance, bicycling). Most videos were created by universities or private practices and only two used people with a neurological condition as the participant. When the content of videos and their presentation (instruction and/or demonstration), was assessed against each key component of TST (practice structure, specificity, repetition, modification, progression, feedback), five of the videos were rated very suitable and five moderately suitable to guide skill acquisition. Most videos failed to demonstrate and provide instruction on each key component of TST and were missing at least one component, with feedback most frequently omitted. Conclusions There are many freely available online videos which could be described as demonstrating TST; very few are suitable to guide skill acquisition. The development of a standardised and validated assessment tool, that is easy to use and assesses the content of TST videos is required to support learners to critically evaluate the educational quality of video content. Guidelines based on sound teaching theory and practice are required to assist creators of online videos to provide suitable resources that meet the learning needs of neurological physiotherapists and students.

Abstract Background We aimed to improve the image quality (IQ) of sparse-view computed tomography (CT) images using a U-Net for lung metastasis detection and determine the best tradeoff between number of views, IQ, and diagnostic confidence. Methods CT images from 41 subjects aged 62.8 ± 10.6 years (mean ± standard deviation, 23 men), 34 with lung metastasis, 7 healthy, were retrospectively selected (2016–2018) and forward projected onto 2,048-view sinograms. Six corresponding sparse-view CT data subsets at varying levels of undersampling were reconstructed from sinograms using filtered backprojection with 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, and 512 views. A dual-frame U-Net was trained and evaluated for each subsampling level on 8,658 images from 22 diseased subjects. A representative image per scan was selected from 19 subjects (12 diseased, 7 healthy) for a single-blinded multireader study. These slices, for all levels of subsampling, with and without U-Net postprocessing, were presented to three readers. IQ and diagnostic confidence were ranked using predefined scales. Subjective nodule segmentation was evaluated using sensitivity and Dice similarity coefficient (DSC); clustered Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used. Results The 64-projection sparse-view images resulted in 0.89 sensitivity and 0.81 DSC, while their counterparts, postprocessed with the U-Net, had improved metrics (0.94 sensitivity and 0.85 DSC) (p = 0.400). Fewer views led to insufficient IQ for diagnosis. For increased views, no substantial discrepancies were noted between sparse-view and postprocessed images. Conclusions Projection views can be reduced from 2,048 to 64 while maintaining IQ and the confidence of the radiologists on a satisfactory level. Relevance statement Our reader study demonstrates the benefit of U-Net postprocessing for regular CT screenings of patients with lung metastasis to increase the IQ and diagnostic confidence while reducing the dose. Key points • Sparse-projection-view streak artifacts reduce the quality and usability of sparse-view CT images. • U-Net-based postprocessing removes sparse-view artifacts while maintaining diagnostically accurate IQ. • Postprocessed sparse-view CTs drastically increase radiologists’ confidence in diagnosing lung metastasis. PURPOSE: Cisplatin-based combination chemotherapy remains the standard of care for locally advanced or metastatic urothelial cancer (la/mUC); however, toxicity is substantial, responses are rarely durable, and many patients with la/mUC are ineligible. Each enfortumab vedotin and pembrolizumab have shown a survival benefit versus chemotherapy in UC, are not restricted by cisplatin eligibility, and warrant investigation as a first-line (1L) combination therapy in patients ineligible for cisplatin. METHODS: In this ongoing phase Ib/II, multicenter, open-label study, 1L cisplatin-ineligible patients with la/mUC received enfortumab vedotin 1.25 mg/kg once daily on days 1 and 8 and pembrolizumab 200 mg (day 1) intravenously once daily in 3-week cycles. The primary end point was safety. Key secondary end points included confirmed objective response rate, duration of response (DOR), and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: Forty-five patients received enfortumab vedotin plus pembrolizumab. The most common treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) were peripheral sensory neuropathy (55.6%), fatigue (51.1%), and alopecia (48.9%). Twenty-nine patients (64.4%) had grade 3 or higher TRAEs; the most common were increased lipase (17.8%), maculopapular rash (11.1%), and fatigue (11.1%). One death (2.2%) was classified as a TRAE. The confirmed objective response rate after a median of nine cycles was 73.3% with a complete response rate of 15.6%. The median DOR and median OS were 25.6 months and 26.1 months, respectively. CONCLUSION: Enfortumab vedotin plus pembrolizumab showed a manageable safety profile. Most patients experienced tumor shrinkage. The median DOR and median OS exceeding 2 years in a cisplatin-ineligible patient population make this a promising combination currently under investigation in a phase III study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT04223856).

Root exudates are plant-derived, exported metabolites likely shaping root-associated microbiomes by acting as nutrients and signals. However, root exudation dynamics are unclear and thus also, if changes in exudation are reflected in changes in microbiome structure. Here, we assess commonalities and differences between exudates of different plant species, diurnal exudation dynamics, as well as the accompanying methodological aspects of exudate sampling. We find that exudates should be collected for hours rather than days as many metabolite abundances saturate over time. Plant growth in sterile, nonsterile, or sugar-supplemented environments significantly alters exudate profiles. A comparison of Arabidopsis thaliana, Brachypodium distachyon, and Medicago truncatula shoot, root, and root exudate metabolite profiles reveals clear differences between these species, but also a core metabolome for tissues and exudates. Exudate profiles also exhibit a diurnal signature. These findings add to the methodological and conceptual groundwork for future exudate studies to improve understanding of plant-microbe interactions.

The ban of antiviral drugs in food-producing animals in several parts of the world, latest by Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/1644, has increased the need for food control laboratories to develop analytical methods and perform official controls. However, little is known about antiviral drugs, their use, and its analysis in food-producing animals in the EU. This review aims to provide insights into relevant viruses, antiviral drugs, and animal-derived matrices for analytical method development and monitoring purposes to implement in food control laboratories. For years, animal viruses, such as African swine fever and avian influenza, have caused many outbreaks. Besides, they led to large economic losses due to the applied control measures and a lack of available treatments. Considering these losses and the known effectiveness of authorized human antiviral drugs in different organisms, medicines such as amantadine in Chinese poultry have been misused. Various analytical methods, including screening assays and sensors (published 2016–2023), and mass spectrometry methods (published 2012–2023) have been outlined in this review for the monitoring of antiviral drugs in animal-derived matrices. However, pharmacokinetics information on metabolite formation and distribution of these substances in different animal-derived matrices is incomplete. Additionally, apart from a few countries, there is a lack of available data on the potential misuse of different antiviral drugs in animal-derived matrices. Although a handful of important antiviral drugs, such as influenza, broad-spectrum, antiretroviral, and herpes drugs, and animal-derived matrices, such as chicken muscle, are identified, the priority of the scope should be further specified by closing the aforementioned gaps.

Die Einstellung des Fruchtbehangs bei Apfelanlagen unter Berücksichtigung der für die individuelle Vermarktung optimalen Fruchtqualität wird bislang anhand von einzelnen Bäumen geschätzt und anschließend einheitlich für ganze Schläge durchgeführt. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde ein Ansatz entwickelt, um die Fruchtertragskapazität von allen Bäumen einer Anlage in Relation zu Blattfläche, Zielfruchtgröße und saisonaler Witterung zu modellieren. Die Ermittlung der Fruchtertragskapazität einzelner Bäume erfolgte in einer Erwerbsanlage mit Bäumen die als schlanke Spindel erzogen wurden ('Gala'/M.9, 3030 Bäume ha-1, n = 607 Versuchsbäume) im fünften Standjahr. Die Blattfläche der Bäume wurde mit einem Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) Laserscanner gemessen. Mit dem LiDAR Sensor wurden dreidimensionale Punktwolken der Baumkronen aufgezeichnet. Durch Segmentierung einzelner Punkte konnte zwischen Blattfläche, Holz und Früchten unterschieden werden. Die Blattfläche pro Baum schwankte zwischen 5 m2 und 11 m2. Die notwendige Blattfläche, um Früchte von 65 mm bis 80 mm zu erzeugen, betrug unter Berücksichtigung deren saisonalen C-Verbrauchs und der saisonalen Wetterbedingungen 274 cm2–847 cm2 Blattfläche. Aus dem Ziel Früchte in diesen Größenklassen (65 mm; 70 mm; 75 mm; 80 mm) zu erzeugen und unter Berücksichtigung der vorhandenen und benötigten Blattfläche resultierte die optimale Fruchtanzahl pro Baum. Diese schwankte innerhalb der Anlage zwischen 92 und 249 Früchten pro Baum. Zur Validierung des Modells wurde die Fruchtanzahl an Einzelbäumen (n = 106) gezählt und die Fruchtgrößenverteilung baumweise bestimmt. Die modellierte Fruchtertragskapazität stimmte bis zu einem Blattfläche-zu-Frucht-Verhältnis von 600 cm2 pro Frucht mit den gemessenen Werten mit geringer Abweichung überein. Bei größeren Blattfläche-zu-Frucht-Verhältnissen war die Vorhersage ungenau. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Fruchtertragskapazität einzelner Bäume anhand der Blattfläche und saisonaler Wetterdaten modelliert werden kann. Das Modell kann sowohl als (i) physiologisches Modell zur Simulation der Zielfruchtzahl einzelner Bäume als auch als praxisrelevantes (ii) agronomisches Modell zur Entscheidungsfindung für eine baumindividuelle Ausdünnung eingesetzt werden.

Summary: To understand the decision process of genomic sequence-to-function models, explainable AI algorithms determine the importance of each nucleotide in a given input sequence to the model’s predictions and enable discovery of cis-regulatory motifs for gene regulation. The most commonly applied method is in silico saturation mutagenesis (ISM) because its per-nucleotide importance scores can be intuitively understood as the computational counterpart to in vivo saturation mutagenesis experiments. While ISM is highly interpretable, it is computationally challenging to perform for many sequences, and becomes prohibitive as the length of the input sequences and size of the model grows. Here, we use the first-order Taylor approximation to approximate ISM values from the model’s gradient, which reduces its computation cost to a single forward pass for an input sequence. We show that the Taylor ISM (TISM) approximation is robust across different model ablations, random initializations, training parameters, and dataset sizes.

By means of a unique, low vibration circular conveyor system, plant sensors capturing light detection and ranging (LiDAR) unit and thermal camera were moved on the same route, around blocks of apple trees, with seven Malus x domestica Borkh. 'Gala' apple trees in each block. Measurements took place four times during the season. Additionally at harvest, diurnal courses were recorded with 18 readings during three days. The data are provided as [i] raw data (3D point clouds of 3 blocks of trees scanned from right and left sides and thermal images), [ii] processed 3D point clouds of canopies annotated with temperature data from the thermal camera, and [iii] manually segmented 3D point clouds of fruit, representing the spatially-resolved fruit surface temperature (FST).Manual FST readings are provided on each measuring date and during diurnal courses. The fruit data are capturing 1236 FST, providing temperature distribution as 3D point cloud and one manually recorded reference FST per fruit. Additionally, fruit size and colour were measured for each fruit, despite for the first date, when fruit were too small for colour readings. Weather data are provided from a station located in the orchard.Usage of data could be (a) in developing methodology for 3D point cloud processing based on raw data, accomplished with reference FST data. Furthermore, (b) the pre-processed point clouds of fruit surface temperature can be reused in ecophysiological studies related to global warming, optimizing fruit production systems, and other. Because the sensors and trees were measured from the same angle and distance, time series analysis of the canopies would be possible.

The emotions experienced by primary school students have both positive and negative effects on learning processes. Thus, to better understand learning processes, research should consider emotions during class. Standard survey-based methods, such as self-reports, are limited in terms of capturing the detailed trajectories of primary school children's emotions, as their abilities of self-reporting are developing and still limited. Emotions can also be tracked by capturing emotional responses as they occur e.g. from physiological reaction measured with sensor wristbands. This technology generates an emotional responses typology based on continuously captured physiological data, such as skin conductivity and skin temperature. However, such measurement methods need to be validated before being used. The present study thus attempted to validate this instrument with primary school students. We used the BM Sensor Wristband technology, as its emotional response typology is based on the categorical emotion and homeostasis approach. In our research, we focus on the emotional responses that can be distinguished by the BM Typology and that can influence learning processes. These emotional responses are: "joy", "curiosity", "attention", "fear", "anger" and "passivity". Therefore, we induced emotional responses in primary school children through specifically developed audio-visual stimuli. Using logistic mixed effects modelling, we investigated the occurrence of opposing reactions. We observed that primary school children's reactions to audio-visual stimuli could be differentiated. We conclude that primary school children's emotional responses, such as "joy", "curiosity", "attention", "fear", "anger" and "passivity", can be accurately measured by evaluating physiological data.

BackgroundL-type CaV1.2 channels undergo cooperative gating to regulate cell function, although mechanisms are unclear. This study tests the hypothesis that phosphorylation of the CaV1.2 pore-forming subunit α1C at S1928 mediates vascular CaV1.2 cooperativity during diabetic hyperglycemia.MethodsA multiscale approach including patch-clamp electrophysiology, super-resolution nanoscopy, proximity ligation assay, calcium imaging' pressure myography, and Laser Speckle imaging was implemented to examine CaV1.2 cooperativity, α1C clustering, myogenic tone, and blood flow in human and mouse arterial myocytes/vessels.ResultsCaV1.2 activity and cooperative gating increase in arterial myocytes from patients with type 2 diabetes and type 1 diabetic mice, and in wild-type mouse arterial myocytes after elevating extracellular glucose. These changes were prevented in wild-type cells pre-exposed to a PKA inhibitor or cells from knock-in S1928A but not S1700A mice. In addition, α1C clustering at the surface membrane of wild-type, but not wild-type cells pre-exposed to PKA or P2Y11 inhibitors and S1928A arterial myocytes, was elevated upon hyperglycemia and diabetes. CaV1.2 spatial and gating remodeling correlated with enhanced arterial myocyte Ca2+ influx and contractility and in vivo reduction in arterial diameter and blood flow upon hyperglycemia and diabetes in wild-type but not S1928A cells/mice.ConclusionsThese results suggest that PKA-dependent S1928 phosphorylation promotes the spatial reorganization of vascular α1C into "superclusters" upon hyperglycemia and diabetes. This triggers CaV1.2 activity and cooperativity, directly impacting vascular reactivity. The results may lay the foundation for developing therapeutics to correct CaV1.2 and arterial function during diabetic hyperglycemia.

Rationale: Common genetic variants have been associated with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Objectives: To determine functional relevance of the 10 IPF-associated common genetic variants we previously identified. Methods: We performed expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) and methylation quantitative trait loci (mQTL) mapping, followed by co-localization of eQTL and mQTL with genetic association signals and functional validation by luciferase reporter assays. Illumina multi-ethnic genotyping arrays, mRNA sequencing, and Illumina 850k methylation arrays were performed on lung tissue of participants with IPF (234 RNA and 345 DNA samples) and non-diseased controls (188 RNA and 202 DNA samples). O futevôlei é um esporte que exige gestos técnicos muito apurados e por ser praticado em solo arenoso, exige que os atletas tenham excelente preparo físico para performar em competições. Com o objetivo de caracterizar a relação trabalho-recuperação e intensidade dos pontos disputados, duração dos sets e de partidas de futevôlei profissional, para elucidar a demanda física do esporte, foram analisados 15 jogos da Liga Nacional de Futevôlei brasileira disputados durante a Temporada 2022. A relação trabalho-recuperação, das disputas de pontos, apresentou uma tendência central (mediana) de 1:3,1, sendo que 95,4% das relações estão no intervalo de 1:0,8 e 1:9,0 e com variabilidade muito alta (CV = 75,9%). Referente às disputas de pontos, 99,4% acontecerem em 30s ou menos, sendo 96,1% dos pontos disputados em 20,0s ou menos e 74% disputados em até 10,0s. Ainda, 71,7% das disputas se deram em intensidades altas. Os dados obtidos apontam o futevôlei como uma modalidade esportiva de demanda física intervalada de alta intensidade e, juntamente com as evidências disponíveis sobre as respostas fisiológicas e metabólicas do exercício realizado em solo arenoso, é plausível inferir que as vias metabólicas ATP-CP e glicolítica são determinantes para a disputa de pontos no futevôlei profissional.

Objectives: To investigate and compare the effects of three different high-definition (HD) non-invasive current stimulation (NICS) protocols on the spinal cord on support balance and somatosensory abilities in healthy young people. Methods: Fifty-eight students were enrolled in this crossover study. All participants underwent application of (i) 1.5 mA anodal high-definition trans spinal direct current stimulation (HD-tsDCS), (ii) 1.5 mA cathodal HD-tsDCS, (iii) 1.5 mA high-definition trans spinal alternating current stimulation (HD-tsACS), and (iv) sham HD-tsDCS/ACS over the eighth thoracic vertebra in a randomised order. Balance (Y Balance test), deep sensitivity (Tuning Fork Test), and superficial sensitivity (Monofilament Test) of the lower limbs were tested immediately before and after each intervention. Results: Balance ability improved significantly following anodal HD-tsDCS and HD-tsACS compared with that following sham HD-tsDCS/ACS. Similarly, deep sensitivity increased significantly with anodal HD-tsDCS and HD-tsACS compared to that with sham HD-tsDCS/ACS and cathodal HD-tsDCS. Furthermore, superficial sensitivity improved significantly following anodal HD-tsDCS compared with that after HD-tsACS and cathodal HD-tsDCS. Conclusions: Our data show that HD-tsNICS effectively modulates the balance and somatosensory control of the lower limbs. Several diseases are associated with illness-induced changes in the spinal network in parallel with sensorimotor disabilities. Non-invasive spinal modulation may be a favourable alternative to conventional brain applications in rehabilitation. Future studies should therefore investigate these promising approaches among cohorts of patients with disabilities.
