Background: Malnutrition frequently affects older adults, increasing their risk for numerous diseases, as well as healthcare costs. Therefore, nutritional assessment and appropriate nutritional support addressed to meet individual nutritional needs and prevent malnutrition and its consequences should be a fundamental part of healthcare for older adults. This study aimed to compare the knowledge of nutrition guidelines for older adults between healthcare and non-healthcare professionals working with older adults. Methods: The study was conducted during May and June 2021 using a validated "Knowledge of nutrition guidelines for older adults" questionnaire designed by Andrija Stampar Teaching Institute of Public Health, Croatia. The study participants were recruited from various institutions providing care for older adults in Split-Dalmatia and Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The final convenience sample consisted of 214 participants (163 healthcare professionals and 51 non-healthcare professionals). The obtained results were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The associations between participants' characteristics and knowledge about the importance of nutrition in disease prevention and treatment, the assessment of nutritional status in older adults, and clinical nutrition were analyzed using multiple linear regression models. Results: Participants' overall knowledge of nutrition guidelines for older adults was moderate in both groups, with healthcare professionals scoring a median of 7.0 (IQR = 1.0) and non-healthcare professionals scoring a median of 6.0 (IQR = 2.0). Compared to non-healthcare professionals, healthcare professionals had lower knowledge about the importance of nutrition in disease prevention and treatment (β = − 0.16; p = 0.024). No statistically significant differences were found between healthcare and non-healthcare professionals in the level of knowledge about the assessment of nutritional status in older adults (β = − 0.02; p = 0.769) and clinical nutrition (β = 0.08; p = 0.267). Conclusions: This study highlights gaps in knowledge regarding dietary guidelines for older adults among healthcare and non-healthcare professionals working with this specific population group. These findings suggest that targeted educational programs might be needed to improve understanding of geriatric nutrition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Aim. Risk factors for malnutrition of patients during hospitalization have not been precisely deter-mined. The aim of the study was to determine these factors in hospitalized gastroenterological patients. Methods. Nutritional status (NS) of 650 gastroenterological patients was assessed at the hospital admission and at discharge by the six parameters: unintentional weight loss, lymphocyte count, serum albumin concentration, body mass index, triceps skinfold thickness, and mid-upper arm muscle circumference. The influence on NS at discharge was tested for ten factors: gender, age, affected organ, the nature, severity, and complications of the disease, the length of hospitalization, mobility worsening during hospitalization, Karnofsky score, and NS on admission. Primary and secondary risk factors were defined among the factors significantly influencing malnutrition. Results. Seven factors were found to be the independent predictors for malnutrition in hospitalized gastroenterological patients. NS at admission was considered as a primary risk factor (Forward: Wald multivariate logistic regression analysis, p < 0.001 for five applied assessment parameters). The other six factors, obtained in the evaluation according to 1-3 assessment parameters, were considered as secondary risk factors: severe disease activity, malignancy, the existence of complications, male gender, hospitalization > 14 days, and mobility worsening during the hospitalization (Forward: Wald multivariate logistic regression analysis, p from 0.001 to 0.027). Conclusion. There are seven risk factors for malnutrition among gastroenterological patients during hospitalization. Timely nutritional support in these patients can prevent the development of intrahospital malnutrition and its negative influence on the clinical outcome.

- Abstract
Silibinin has considerable therapeutic potential for the treatment of diabetes through anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. However, the therapeutic application of silibinin is quite limited due to its poor bioavailability. In the present study, an attempt was made to improve the antidiabetic efficacy of silibinin by its encapsulation in liposomal vesicles. The liposomes with a high encapsulation efficiency of silibinin (96%) and a zeta potential of −26.2 ± 0.6 mV were developed and studied using nicotinamide/streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Administration of silibinin-loaded liposomes to diabetic rats lowered glucose levels, increased insulin levels, and improved pancreatic islet architecture. The anti-inflammatory effect of silibinin-loaded liposomes was demonstrated by a decrease in serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and a reduced deposition of collagen fibers in the islets of diabetic rats. Furthermore, silibinin-loaded liposomes were more efficient in lowering glucose, alanine transaminase, triglyceride, and creatinine levels in diabetic rats than pure silibinin. In addition, silibinin-loaded liposomes had a significantly better effect on beta-cell mass and Glut2 glucose receptor distribution in diabetic islets than pure silibinin. The present results clearly show that liposome encapsulation of silibinin enhances its antidiabetic efficacy, which may contribute to the therapeutic benefit of silibinin in the treatment of diabetes and its complications.

GENTIANA ,METABOLITES ,FREE radicals ,LABORATORY rats ,MEDICINAL plants ,XANTHONE - Abstract
Despite the existence of various therapeutic approaches, diabetes mellitus and its complications have been an increasing burden of mortality and disability globally. Hence, it is necessary to evaluate the efficacy and safety of medicinal plants to support existing drugs in treating diabetes. Xanthones, the main secondary metabolites found in Gentiana dinarica and Gentiana utriculosa, display various biological activities. In in vitro cultured and particularly in genetically transformed G. dinarica and G. utriculosa roots, there is a higher content of xanthones. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare antidiabetic properties of secondary metabolites (extracts) prepared from these two Gentiana species, cultured in vitro and genetically transformed with those collected from nature. We compare HPLC secondary metabolite profiles and the content of the main extract compounds of G. dinarica and G. utriculosa methanol extracts with their ability to scavenge DPPH free radicals and inhibit intestinal α-glucosidase in vitro. Anti-hyperglycemic activity of selected extracts was tested further in vivo on glucose-loaded Wistar rats. Our findings reveal that the most prominent radical scavenging potential and potential to control the rise in glucose level, detected in xanthone-rich extracts, were in direct correlation with an accumulation of xanthones norswertianin and norswertianin-1-O-primeveroside in G. dinarica and decussatin and decussatin-1-O-primeveroside in G. utriculosa. - Abstract
Emotion can reflect in the perception of food consumption. An increase in food intake during emotional and psychological conditions may have a negative impact on human health. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the associations between food consumption, emotional eating behavior, and emotional conditions such as stress, depression, loneliness, boredom eating, maintaining vigilance and alertness, and emotional food consolation. We used a Motivations for Food Choices Questionnaire (Eating Motivations, EATMOT) to determine the emotional aspects of food consumption in 9052 respondents living in 12 European countries between October 2017 and March 2018. Ordinal linear regression was used to identify the associations between the emotional eating behavior and emotional conditions such as stress, depression, loneliness, emotional consolation, and reasons to improve physical and psychological conditions. The regression models confirmed the associations between food consumption, emotional conditions, and emotional eating behavior. Associations were found between the emotional eating behavior and stress (odds ratio (OR) = 1.30, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.07–1.60, p = 0.010), depressive mood (OR = 1.41, 95% CI = 1.40–1.43, p < 0.001), loneliness (OR = 1.60, 95% CI = 1.58–1.62, p < 0.001), boredom (OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.36–1.39, p < 0.001), and emotional consolation (OR = 1.55, 95% CI = 1.54–1.57, p < 0.001). Emotional eating was associated with an effort to improve physical and psychological conditions, such as controlling body weight (OR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.10–1.12, p < 0.001), keeping awake and alert (OR = 1.19, 95% CI = 1.19–1.20, p < 0.001) and consumption to feel good (OR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.21–1.22, p < 0.001). In conclusion, emotions might provoke emotional eating behavior. The appropriate way to handle stress, depression, or other emotional states is important in conditions of being emotionally overwhelmed. The public should be educated on how to

Philology ,somatic idioms ,Croatian ,Linguistics and languages ,tongue ,English ,Lingvistika i jezici ,uho ,engleski ,kontrastivna analiza ,somatski frazemi ,contrastive analysis - Abstract
Istraživanje predstavlja doprinos dosadašnjim frazeološkim istraživanjima na poredbenoj osnovi budući da se do sada nije provela sustavna kontrastivna analiza somatskih frazema unutar triju frazeoloških tradicija., The anthropocentric paradigm of modern linguistics is also reflected in phraseology, and the “man in language” is revealed in a special way within the expressions that contain various somatic concepts. As part of the fundamental and oldest lexical fund, somatic idioms both deposit and mirror the correlation between body and cognition, the physical, and the metaphysical. Since the process of cognition is based on embodied experience, the subject of the research are idioms with the component tongue and ear, sensory organs by means of which the process of cognition is activated, but which also reflect the basic functions of language – communication and socialization. Speech and hearing are complementary, inseparable, and extremely important features of the human biological and social dimension. The analysis of somatic idioms in Croatian, English and German was carried out at the level of motivation, semantic-conceptual analysis, functional and formal equivalence, etymology, and includes lexicographic treatment of the chosen corpora. The theoretical-methodological framework of contrastive analysis has been expanded, in certain research phases, with cultural and cognitive-linguistic assumptions of processing phraseological material, excerpted from general and phraseological monolingual and bilingual dictionaries and relevant network databases. This approach to the analysis of phraseological material has shown that the fundamental source of motivation of somatic idioms with the components tongue and ear are cultural models. The conventional knowledge related to somatic concepts tongue and ear is extended with other cultural models, and in some examples elaborated by rhetorical devices and cognitive mechanisms of conceptual metaphor and metonymy. The conceptual structure of somatic phraseology has also shown anthropocentric properties since lexicalized concepts of extralinguistic reality are almost entirely related to man. In addition to basic concepts of speech and hearing, somatic phrases also reflect human 243 characteristics and states, mental processes, skills and abilities, interpersonal relationships, emotions and moods and, consequently, human appearance. Contrastive analysis of somatic idioms with the components tongue and ear has confirmed the premise of the existence of common features within the classification of extralinguistic reality through somatic phraseology of Croatian, English, and German. The common semanticconceptual basis is conditioned primarily by universal and fundamental functional features of somatic concepts, such as speech and hearing, while the existence of culturally specific expressions, in which the somatic component most often represents a part of the human body as the bearer of cultural information, speaks in favour of linguistic relativism. The research represents a contribution to previous comparative phraseological research since no systematic contrastive analysis of somatic phrases within the three phraseological traditions has been conducted so far

dramske aktivnosti ,engleski jezik ,komunikacijska kompetencija ,stavovi i samoprocjena budućih učitelja - Abstract

drama u obrazovanju ,dramske tehnike ,engleski jezik ,stavovi i samoprocjena budućih učitelja engleskog jezika - Abstract

- Abstract
The aim of this paper is to examine the frequency of non-lexicalized fillers in the repeated task of retelling a structured story narration. The subjects were 33 students of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in Split who performed the same narrative task twice in the English language (L2). The speech was recorded usingthe computer program Audacity and transcribed. All non-lexicalized fillers were recorded, and statistically analyzed, pointing to a significantly less frequent occurrence in the repeated speech. The results are explained by Levelt’s model,i.e. the reduced processing requirements at all levels of speech production and greater opportunities for speech monitoring. The obtained results have practical implications, as they point to the positive impact of immediate repetition aiming at developing more fluent speech, even in the case of more proficient speakers.

elementi kulture ,makrostrukturni i mikrostrukturni sadržaji ,polazna i ciljna kultura - Abstract

- Abstract
The present investigation tested the in vivo antioxidant efficacy (superoxide dismutase, SOD; catalase, CAT; glutathione peroxidase; Gpx), lipid peroxidation (LPO) and anti-inflammatory properties (cyclooxygenase-2; COX-2) of sour cherry juices obtained from an autochthonous cultivar (Prunus cerasus cv. Maraska) that is grown in coastal parts of Croatia. Antioxidant potential was tested in mouse tissue (blood, liver, and brain), LPO (liver, brain) and anti-inflammatory properties in glycogen elicited macrophages. Additionally, the concentration of cyanidin-3-glucoside, cyanidin-3-rutinoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-rutinoside and total anthocyanins present in Prunus cerasus cv. Maraska cherry juice was determined. Mice were randomly divided into a control group (fed with commercial food pellets) and 2 experimental groups (fed with commercial food pellets with 10% or 50% of cherry juice added). Among the anthocyanins, the cyanidin-3-glucoside was present in the highest concentration. These results show antioxidant action of cherry juice through increased SOD (liver, blood) and Gpx (liver) activity and decreased LPO concentration. The study highlights cherry juice as a potent COX-2 inhibitor and antioxidant in the liver and blood of mice, but not in the brain. Thus, according to our study, Prunus cerasus cv. Maraska cherry juice might potentially be used as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory product with beneficial health-promoting properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This thesis reviews multiple segments of Harry Potter novels in order to answer the questions about whether the Harry Potter novels are either children and/or adult literature. Fantasy novels are part of children’s literature. In this thesis we consider the fantasy genre as the foundation of the Harry Potter novels, specifically focusing on Harry Potter himself, as a hero archetype, in the same way it occurs in Campbell’s Heroe’s Journey. We also consider and analyse themes such as: the strength of female characters, the conflict of nurture versus nature, slavery and racism; all of which are typically associated with adult literature. Lastly we review the global phenomenon that the author, J.K.Rowling, was able to achieve through the combination of effective marketing, fantastic story telling and writing which has allowed the love for magic to live on.

Their purpose is to organise speech in a logical and meaningful way. Since textbooks are relevant in foreign language learning, it is important for them to provide a lot of discourse markers so students can acquire them at the very beginning. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of discourse markers in textbooks of Croatian publishers Školska knjiga and Profil Klett and the British publisher Oxford University Press. The prevalence of the most common discourse markers was also investigated. The analysis was performed by comparing textbooks for the second, fourth, sixth and eighth grade. In the textbook of the Croatian publishing house for the second grade, the discourse marker okay does not occur, unlike the English textbook in which it constituted almost two thirds of all discourse markers. As far as the fourth grade is concerned, the markers but and and are equally represented, while in the textbooks for the sixth grade the marker and is the most represented in both publishing houses. The results of the analysis show that in the textbooks for the eighth grade, the discourse marker and still dominates among Croatian publishers, and other markers are used less frequently. On the other hand, the discourse marker and appears less often in the English textbook, but unlike Croatian publishers, markers but, so and well dominate. The results of the textbook analysis display that the textbooks of the Oxford University Press publishing house have a higher share of discourse markers in the total number of words compared to the textbooks of Croatian publishing houses.

Usprkos poznavanju svih dobrobiti implementacije dramskih postupaka u nastavnom procesu, može se zaključiti da isti nisu dovoljno zastupljeni u kontekstu formalnog poučavanja engleskog jezika., The aim of this graduate thesis was to investigate the prevalence of dramatic procedures in English language teaching from 1st to 4th grade in textbooks and to examine the attitudes of future English teachers about the use of drama in the classroom. Four English language textbooks from first to fourth grade were analyzed, and the study was conducted on a sample of forty students of Teacher Education at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split and the Faculty of Teacher Education in Osijek. The results of this study point to an underrepresentation of dramatic procedures in textbooks. Also, the analysis of the questionnaire shows that students are not adequately prepared to use dramatic procedures in their future work. Despite knowing all the benefits of implementing drama in teaching, it can be concluded that dramatic procedures are not sufficiently represented in the context of formal English language teaching.

Upravo u tom svjetlu, analiziraju se različiti kolonijalni diskursi i stereotipna podjela uloga u kojoj Robinson kao kolonijalist predstavlja civilizirani Zapad, a Petko kao domorodac i njegov sluga, necivilizirani Istok., This thesis deals with motifs of racism and colonialism in the novel „Robinson Crusoe“ written by Daniel Defoe; one of the most famous novels of English literature, so as children's literature in general. The novel was written in the 18. century and deals with the destiny of a man who ends up on the deserted island by accident, far away from civilization where he creates a new world by his own standards. Robinson as a typical representative of colonial power establishes a relationship of power and domination over land and people. Although he saves the life to a man of another race and shares his life with him, he never consideres Friday as a friend because the main character, as a white race representative, in that relationship acts superior. Robinson's need to posses land, objects, and living beings, makes him a man of capitalist worldview, as the one who, claming to have his „natural“ right, establishes hegemony of West over East. That is the reason why this thesis specially emphasizes Orientalism as one of the key points of the Postcolonial theory, which explains the way of ruling and thinking based on the political power differences between West and East. In that way, the different colonial discourses and stereotypical division of the roles are analyzed, in which Robinson as a colonialist represents the civilized West, and Friday as a a native and his servent, the uncivilized East.

- Abstract
Rad, nadalje, pokušava utvrditi probleme i poteškoće na koje nailaze učitelji u radu s navedenom učeničkom populacijom u području nastave stranog, posebice engleskog jezika., The attitude towards people with special needs has changed drastically over time – from marginalisation and exclusion from society, through establishing special institutions for their upbringing and education, all the way to integration and inclusion through which they can become valuable participants in social and educational life. Integration enables us to include children with lesser disabilities into the regular education system and by means of inclusion we include children of the same age with and without disabilities so that they can play, socialize and study together. In Croatia there is a tendency towards a process of inclusion, which poses a great challenge for teachers. In this thesis, attention is drawn to the insufficient education of teachers regarding work with children with special needs in all the school subjects, including teaching English as a foreign language, as well as to the shortage of empirical research with respect to the glottodidactic aspects of teaching pupils with disabilities. The research presented in this paper ensures the identification and description of the concrete methodological-didactic procedures that are used in teaching students with disabilities in English language classes. This paper aims to determine problems and 2 difficulties that teachers encounter in working with the stated student population in the field of foreign language teaching, with an emphasis on teaching English.

- Abstract
Endomorphins are newly discovered mu-opioid receptor selective immunocompetent opioid peptides. Endomorphin 1 is predominantly distributed in brain, while endomorphin 2 is widely allocated in the spinal cord. Lately, endomorphins have been investigated as modulators of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Nitric oxide is short lived radical involved in various biological processes such as regulation of blood vessel contraction, inflammation, neurotransmission and apoptosis. The aim of this work was to investigate the in vivo effects of endomorphins on nitric oxide release and NOS 2 isoenzyme upregulation in mice peritoneal macrophages additionally challenged ex vivo with lipopolysaccharide. The results showed that endomorphin 1 or endomorphin 2 in vitro did not change NO release from peritoneal mouse macrophages during a 48 h incubation period. On the other hand in vivo endomorphins had suppressive effect on NO release as well as on NOS 2 and IL-1 protein concentration. The most of suppressive effect in vivo of both endomorphins was blocked with 30 min pretreatment with mu-receptor selective antagonist beta-FNA, which proved involvement of opioid receptor pathway in suppressive effects of endomorphins., ((c) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. - Abstract
The beneficial effects of hyperoxia have been noted in treatment of several diseases and pathological states. However, the excessive production of ROS under hyperoxic conditions can directly damage cellular macromolecules if the imbalance in antioxidant status exists. Cytochrome P450 (Cyp) 4a14 has an important role in the metabolism of lipids and as a source of ROS in oxidative stress. This study investigated the oxidant/antioxidant status as a response to hyperoxia treatment in liver of young CBA/Hr mice of both sexes and whether the observed response is mediated by Cyp4a14 via PPAR isoforms in a sex-dependent manner. The overexpression of Cyp4a14, lack of both LPO and of 4-hydroxynonenal(HNE)-protein adducts revealed by immunohistochemical analysis in hyperoxia-treated females indicates their greater resistance to hyperoxia compared to males, which is parallelled to changes in PPARbeta/delta and PPARgamma expression. These results suggest the presence of sex-dependent changes in all investigated parameters, which points out sex-related susceptibility towards oxidative stress and hyperoxia treatment of various pathological conditions and diseases.

- Abstract
The aim of this study was to correlate the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase in liver and brain of 1, 4 and 18 months old CBA mice of both sexes. In liver, decreased superoxide dismutase and increased glutathione peroxidase activities were observed during aging in male mice. In brain, the increase of catalase and glutathione peroxidase activity during aging was observed only in female mice. Regardless of tissue examined, different sex-related correlation pattern of antioxidant enzyme activity was demonstrated in young and old mice. The cooperation between antioxidant enzymes becomes more coherent with increased lipid peroxidation concentration in liver and brain of older female mice. On the contrary, in older male mice the link among three antioxidant enzymes becomes weaker, regardless of lipid peroxidation concentration which increased in liver and decreased in brain during aging. In older mice lower partial coefficient of correlation than pair correlation demonstrates the influence of the third party in the cooperation of two antioxidant enzymes. The results imply stronger correlative links in old female than male mice, which might explain why old females are better protected from oxidative stress than males.

- Abstract
Native propolis was defined as propolis powder collected from the continental part of Croatia and prepared according to a patented process that preserves all the propolis natural nutritional and organoleptic qualities. Nine phenolic compounds (out of thirteen tested) in propolis sample were detected by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. Among them chrysin was the most abundant (2478.5 microg/g propolis). Contrary to moderate antioxidant activity of propolis examined in vitro (ferric reduction antioxidant power; FRAP-assay), propolis as a food supplement modulated antioxidant enzymes (AOE) and significantly decreased lipid peroxidation processes (LPO) in plasma, liver, lungs, and brain of mice. The effect was dose- and tissue-dependent. The lower dose (100 mg/kg bw) protected plasma from oxidation, whereas the higher dose (300 mg/kg bw) was pro-oxidative. Hyperoxia (long-term normobaric 100% oxygen) increased LPO in all three organs tested. The highest vulnerability to oxidative stress was observed in lungs where hyperoxia was not associated with augmentation of AOE. Propolis protected lungs from hyperoxia by increased catalase (CAT) activity. This is of special importance for lungs since lungs of adult animals are highly vulnerable to oxidative stress because of their inability to augment AOE activity. Because of its strong antioxidant and scavenging abilities, native propolis might be used as a strong plant-based antioxidant effective not only in physiological conditions but also in cases that require prolonged high concentration of oxygen.
