Rice followed by wheat is the dominant cropping system in the middle Indo-Gangetic plains (IGP). Lower productivity (4.8 t ha−1) of this cropping system in Bihar, compared to the national average (6.8 t ha−1) due to several climate- and production-related issues, is a matter of concern for the farmers and the policymakers. Keeping all these in view, an experiment with rice–wheat cropping system was carried out during 2020–21 and 2021–22 in 17 adopted villages of 13 districts of Bihar under the Project “Climate Resilient Agriculture Program (CRAP)” to evaluate the feasibility of early transplanting of rice in the month of June with the aim of achieving higher system productivity by early harvesting of rice and subsequent timely sowing of wheat before 15 November with the provision of assured irrigation. In this study, the concept of an innovative community irrigation approach and single-phase 3-hp submersible pump was employed. Long-duration rice variety (150 days) Rajendra Mahsuri-1 was sown during 20–25 May in the nursery and transplanted through puddling operation during 15–20 June in 17 locations. Under delayed conditions, the nursery sowing and transplanting window were 10–15 June and 10–15 July, respectively. Timely sown rice grown with the provision of a community irrigation system achieved a grain yield of 5.2 t ha−1 and 85.8% higher water productivity, compared to late-sown crops. Following the harvest of rice, the HD-2967 variety of wheat was planted in the first fortnight of November and harvested in the first week of April, yielding 4.9 t ha−1 with the application of 2–3 irrigations based on soil type and evaporative demand. Timely harvesting of wheat facilitated farmers of the region to take an additional crop of summer green gram. With an assured irrigation system and shifting planting dates and thereby managing climatic risks, the overall productivity of the rice–wheat cropping system was achieved to the tune of 10.1 t ha−1 with a cropping intensity of 300% for better adaptation and sustainable production.

Dengue virus (DENV) is spread mostly by biting by the infected female mosquitoes of the species Aedes aegypti, that are commonly found in tropical and subtropical zones of globe. Some studies have shown that nearly fifty percent of the globe are susceptible to DENV. Most infections by DENV are asymptomatic. Clinical infections vary from mild fever to serious diseases including hemorrhagic fever and shock syndrome. The main objective of this study was to estimate DENV infection by rapid diagnostic (RDTs) kit methods in a tertiary care setting. This retrospective study was done at Crimson Hospital, Butwal, Nepal from June to November 2019. Serum samples of all dengue fever suspected patients were tested for DENV antigen as Dengue nonstructural protein 1(NS1) and DENV specific antibodies as IgM and IgG by using World Health Organization Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certified rapid solid phase immunochromatographic method. All laboratory test results were tabulated by using MS-Excel and analyzed by statistical package for the Social Sciences software version 20. Out of 821 samples tested, 518 were positive, including 322 (62.16%) reactive for dengue NS1 Protein, 121 (23.35%) for IgM, 62 (11.96%) for IgG and 13 (2.50%) were positive for both IgG and IgM antibodies. Our study showed high prevalence of dengue infection during monsoon to post-monsoon and the infection rate was higher in males (71.72%) than in females (53.36%). According to our findings, DENV infection is prevalent in Butwal, Nepal. Early diagnosis, better case management, faster public health response and effective health policy towards the control of mosquito vectors may reduce the dengue burden and must be implemented in Nepal.

Due to recent developments in the field of high-power and medium-voltage, the multilevel inverter has raised to such an extent owing to some of its amazing facts regarding harmonic spectrum, ease in control, reduced electromagnetic interference (EMI), filterless circuit, stress on power switches, common-mode voltage. This paper well describes a novel architecture of a single-phase multilevel inverter using a lesser number of overall components, especially the power switches. The proposed topology is generalized in the structure that can generate any number of voltage steps. A 7-level structure of the proposed topology is explained and is elaborately discussed. Simulation is carried out in MATLAB and corresponding experimental results verify the existence of the proposed multilevel inverter. The real-time experimental results were presented and are well verified by the simulation results for 7-level as well for 13-level across RL-Load. The nature of load current is also indicated as per the nature of load voltage. Nevertheless, the topology is further compared with some of the recent literature and found superior in each respect.

Vitamin D, a secosteroid hormone, appears to have significant beneficial effects on various physiological systems, including the musculoskeletal system. Vitamin D assists in the regulation of numerous critical biological functions and physiological processes in humans, including inflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial respiration, and is also linked to cardiac diseases. It is also reported that vitamin D plays a central role in molecular and cellular mechanisms, which reduce oxidative stress, and tissue damage and regulate cellular health. On the other side, hypovitaminosis D reduces mitochondrial activity and increases oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. Hypervitaminosis D increases the prevalence and severity of cellular damage. It has also been reported that vitamin D is involved in many functions of the reproductive system in human and critically play an important role in the reproductive tissues of women and men. Its role is very well defined, starting from female menarche to menopause, pregnancy, and lactation, and finally in male fertility. Hence, the appropriate amount of vitamin D is necessary to maintain the normal function of cell organelles. Based on recent studies, it is understood that vitamin D is involved in the biological activities of mitochondria in cells, especially in cardiomyocytes. In this review, we emphasized the role of vitamin D in mitochondrial respiration, which could significantly influence heart health and human reproduction.

Genomics and genome editing promise enormous opportunities for crop improvement and elementary research. Precise modification in the specific targeted location of a genome has profited over the unplanned insertional events which are generally accomplished employing unadventurous means of genetic modifications. The advent of new genome editing procedures viz; zinc finger nucleases (ZFNs), homing endonucleases, transcription activator like effector nucleases (TALENs), Base Editors (BEs), and Primer Editors (PEs) enable molecular scientists to modulate gene expressions or create novel genes with high precision and efficiency. However, all these techniques are exorbitant and tedious since their prerequisites are difficult processes that necessitate protein engineering. Contrary to first generation genome modifying methods, CRISPR/Cas9 is simple to construct, and clones can hypothetically target several locations in the genome with different guide RNAs. Following the model of the application in crop with the help of the CRISPR/Cas9 module, various customized Cas9 cassettes have been cast off to advance mark discrimination and diminish random cuts. The present study discusses the progression in genome editing apparatuses, and their applications in chickpea crop development, scientific limitations, and future perspectives for biofortifying cytokinin dehydrogenase, nitrate reductase, superoxide dismutase to induce drought resistance, heat tolerance and higher yield in chickpea to encounter global climate change, hunger and nutritional threats.

Among the FACTS device, the distributed power flow controller (DPFC) is a superior device. This can be evaluated after eliminating the dc capacitor between shunt and series convertors of the unified power flow controller (UPFC) and placing a number of low rating single phase type distributed series convertors in the line instant of using single large rating three phase series convertors as in the UPFC. The power flow through this dc capacitor as in the UPFC now takes place through the transmission line at a third harmonic frequency in the DPFC. The DPFC uses the D-FACTS that allows the replacement of a large three-phase converter as in the UPFC by several small-size series convertors present in the DPFC. The redundancy of several series convertors increases the system’s reliability of the power system. Also, there is no requirement for high voltage isolation as series convertors of the DPFC are hanging as well as single-phase types. Consequently, the DPFC system has a lower cost than the UPFC system. In this paper, the equivalent ABCD parameters of the latest FACTSdeviceDPFChave been formulated with the help of an equivalent circuit model of the DPFC at the fundamental frequency component. Further, the optimal location in the transmission line and maximum efficiency of the DPFC along with Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC), Static Synchronous Shunt Compensator (STATCOM) and UPFC FACTS devices have been investigated using an iteration program developed in MATLAB under steady-state conditions. The results obtained depict that the DPFC when placed slightly off-center at 0.33 fraction distance from the sending end comes up with higher performance. Whereas, when the TCSC, STATCOM and UPFC are placed at 0.16, 0.2815, 0.32 fraction distances from sending end respectively give their best performance.

Epigenomics has become a significant research interest at a time when rapid environmental changes are occurring. Epigenetic mechanisms mainly result from systems like DNA methylation, histone modification, and RNA interference. Epigenetic mechanisms are gaining importance in classical genetics, developmental biology, molecular biology, cancer biology, epidemiology, and evolution. Epigenetic mechanisms play important role in the action and interaction of plant genes during development, and also have an impact on classical plant breeding programs, inclusive of novel variation, single plant heritability, hybrid vigor, plant-environment interactions, stress tolerance, and performance stability. The epigenetics and epigenomics may be significant for crop adaptability and pliability to ambient alterations, directing to the creation of stout climate-resilient elegant crop cultivars. In this review, we have summarized recent progress made in understanding the epigenetic mechanisms in plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses and have also tried to provide the ways for the efficient utilization of epigenomic mechanisms in developing climate-resilient crop cultivars, especially in chickpea, and other legume crops.

Domestication is a dynamic and ongoing process of transforming wild species into cultivated species by selecting desirable agricultural plant features to meet human needs such as taste, yield, storage, and cultivation practices. Human plant domestication began in the Fertile Crescent around 12,000 years ago and spread throughout the world, including China, Mesoamerica, the Andes and Near Oceania, Sub-Saharan Africa, and eastern North America. Indus valley civilizations have played a great role in the domestication of grain legumes. Crops, such as pigeon pea, black gram, green gram, lablab bean, moth bean, and horse gram, originated in the Indian subcontinent, and Neolithic archaeological records indicate that these crops were first domesticated by early civilizations in the region. The domestication and evolution of wild ancestors into today’s elite cultivars are important contributors to global food supply and agricultural crop improvement. In addition, food legumes contribute to food security by protecting human health and minimize climate change impacts. During the domestication process, legume crop species have undergone a severe genetic diversity loss, and only a very narrow range of variability is retained in the cultivars. Further reduction in genetic diversity occurred during seed dispersal and movement across the continents. In general, only a few traits, such as shattering resistance, seed dormancy loss, stem growth behavior, flowering–maturity period, and yield traits, have prominence in the domestication process across the species. Thus, identification and knowledge of domestication responsive loci were often useful in accelerating new species’ domestication. The genes and metabolic pathways responsible for the significant alterations that occurred as an outcome of domestication might aid in the quick domestication of novel crops. Further, recent advances in “omics” sciences, gene-editing technologies, and functional analysis will accelerate the domestication and crop improvement of new crop species without losing much genetic diversity. In this review, we have discussed about the origin, center of diversity, and seed movement of major food legumes, which will be useful in the exploration and utilization of genetic diversity in crop improvement. Further, we have discussed about the major genes/QTLs associated with the domestication syndrome in pulse crops and the future strategies to improve the food legume crops.

A 12-bit partial segmented current steering digital to analog converter (DAC) with low glitch area, power consumption, and integral nonlinearity (INL) error is proposed in this work. The cause of the glitch area and its possible solutions are explored. A current-mode logic (CML) latch with reduced output swing (Vdd to slightly below threshold voltage) is used at the input to the differential switch which reduces the glitch area (also known as glitch energy) significantly to 0.25 pVs. Further, this latch is used in the digital block of the proposed DAC to reduce the area and power requirement of the overall design. A dummy switch is used at the output of the differential switch to diminish effect of charge feedthrough at the output node of a current steering DAC. It also helps in the reduction of minimum allowable voltage headroom as compared to conventional double cascode structure and reduction of total power consumption to 9.1 mW operating at 200 MHz. The design and simulation of current steering DAC are performed in a 0.18 μm standard CMOS technology library using Cadence Virtuoso tool with a supply voltage of 1.8 V.

The ever-increasing demand for high-quality digital video requires efficient compression techniques and fast video codecs. It necessitates increased complexity of the video codec algorithms. So, there is a need for hardware accelerators to implement such complex algorithms. The latest video compression algorithms such as High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) and Versatile Video Coding (VVC) have been adopted Context-based Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding (CABAC) as the entropy coding method. The CABAC has two main data processing paths: regular and bypass bin path, which can achieve good compression when used with Syntax Elements (SEs) statistics. However, it is highly intrinsic data dependence and has sequential coding characteristics. Thus, it is challenging to parallelize. In this work, a 6-core bypass bin path having high-throughput and low hardware area has been proposed. It is a parallel architecture capable of processing up to 6 bypass bins per clock cycle to improve throughput. Further, the resource-sharing techniques within the binarization and a common controller block have reduced the hardware area. The proposed architecture has been simulated, synthesized, and prototyped on 28 nm Artix 7 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The implementation of Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) has been done using 65 nm CMOS technology. The proposed design achieved a throughput of 1.26 Gbin/s at 210 MHz operating frequency with a low hardware area compared to existing architectures. This architecture also supports multi-standard (HEVC/VVC) encoders for Ultra High Definition (UHD) applications.

Investigations of structural defects and their associated impact on the optical properties of optical materials are essential expediencies because different methods are involved in the preparation of those materials for display applications. Lanthanide ion doping is a simple structural probing strategy that facilitates the challenges of identifying the structural defects. Pure and terbium (Tb3+) doped Ca2SiO4 (C2S) particles were prepared using Pechini (C2SP) and hydrothermal methods (C2SH). From SEM images, it is observed that the Tb3+ doped C2SP particles were highly agglomerated, more than the C2SH particles. The TEM study confirmed that the particle size decreased for C2SH prepared at the high hydrothermal temperatures of 180 and 200 °C (C2S:180H and C2S:200H). Fluorescence emission quenching occurred for Tb3+ doped C2S:180H and C2S:200H. The emission intensity was high for Tb3+ doped C2SH prepared at 140 °C compared to Tb3+ doped C2SP, C2S:180H and C2S:200H. The changes in the O2p orbitals, associated with the upper-level valence band spectra of the tetrahedral silicate of pure C2SP and C2S:180H, were experimentally evaluated in the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)-valence band spectra. The symmetry lowering owing to the distortion in the silicate unit quenched the emission, which was confirmed by XPS-valence band spectra and Tb3+ emission lines. This study suggests that the Pechini method is more suitable to prepare the Tb3+ doped C2S phosphors compared to the hydrothermal method, particularly at high temperature for solid state display and scintillator applications.

Green synthesis of nanoparticles is one of the most focused areas of research that uses either plant materials or microorganisms replacing harmful chemicals. Current study was carried out to synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using aqueous extract of ash derived from Musa balbisiana Colla pseudostem, a plant biowaste and study of its application as an antibiofilm and antibacterial agent. The synthesized NPs were characterized by UV–Visible spectrophotometry, HR-TEM, XRD, SEM and EDX analysis. The NPs with size 45 ​–65 ​nm revealed strong antibiofilm efficacy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa at a concentration of 100 ​μg/ml. The ZnO NPs also showed excellent antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive as well as Gram-negative bacteria that include Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The present study was conducted in five districts of Odisha to study the different duck rearing practices by using a questionnaire and to differentiate the characters of ducks. Ducks were raised under semi-intensive management system and mostly depend on scavenging for their nutritional needs. The ducks are raised both for meat and eggs. The annual average egg production per duck was very poor. The flock size is usually small and varies from 9 to 30. In both drake and duck body carriage was slightly upright and bill shape was horizontal. Prominent head colour in drake was greenish black (55.6%) and in duck was fawn-white mix (75.68%). In both drake and duck dominant neck and breast colour was white. Wing colour was brown/grey and white in drake and duck, respectively. Prominent bill colour was yellow and bean colour was black in both drake and duck. Dominant shank and eye colour in drake and duck was orange and grey respectively. Mean values for all the morphometrical measurement, i.e. body length, bill length, bill width, shank length, wing length, head length, neck length and head width was significantly higher in drake. The average body weight of drake and duck were 1.80±0.02 and 1.41±0.02 kg, respectively.

Introduction: Vitamin D deficiency has been shown to cause expression of insulin gene resulting in high insulin synthesis and secretion. It also decreases insulin resistance, thus affecting abnormal glucose metabolism and diabetes. Aim: To estimate total 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels in pregnant women and to find its association with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). Materials and Methods: Fifty-four antenatal women were randomly enrolled at 24-28 weeks gestation after conforming to exclusion criteria. Serum vitamin D, two-hour 75 grams glucose and postprandial plasma glucose levels were estimated in all women at the time of enrollment. GDM was diagnosed with plasma glucose level >140 mg/dL (Group A). Rest of the women constituted Group B or control group. They were followed up till delivery. Vitamin D status and fetomaternal outcome was evaluated. Results: Hypovitaminosis D was found in 93% of women. There were 38.8% women (n=21) in GDM group compared to 61.2% (n=33) in control group. Vitamin D was significantly low in Group A than B (p-value 0.004). None of the women in Group A had vitamin D levels of 10 ng/mL and above compared to 37.2% in Group B. Background: The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of syphilis infection by Treponema pallidum hemagglutination assay (TPHA) among blood donors in Delhi and to study their correlation with other markers of transfusion transmitted infections such as hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) so as to establish the utility of TPHA over and above venereal diseases research laboratory test (VDRL), not only as a marker for testing T. pallidum infection, but also as a marker of high risk behavior. Materials and Methods: This prospective study was carried out in the Regional Blood Transfusion Centre, Lady Hardinge Medical College and associated Sucheta Kriplani Hospital, New Delhi for a period of 2 years. Donated blood was screened for TPHA seroreactivity along with screening for anti HIV I and II, anti-HCV, HBsAg by third generation enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test. A total of 8082 serum samples of blood donors were collected from healthy blood donors in our blood bank. They were classified into two groups- test group and control group based on TPHA positivity. The co-occurrence of HBsAg, HIV and HCV infection were determined in TPHA positive blood donors (test group) in comparison with TPHA negative blood donors (control group). Results: We found the TPHA seroreactivity to be 4.4% in Delhi′s blood donors. Nearly 8.2% (663/8082) of the donated blood had serological evidence of infection by at least one pathogen (syphilis/HIV/hepatitis B virus/HCV) and 6.63% (44/663) donors with positive serology had multiple infections (two or more). Quadruple infection was seen in one donor, triple infection was seen in three donors and double infection was seen in 40 donors. Prevalence of HIV seroreactivity was found to be statistically significant and HCV seroreactivity statistically insignificant in TPHA positive group in comparison to TPHA negative group. Discussion: In our study, the TPHA seropositivity correlated with higher HIV and HCV seropositivity and the same correlation has been observed by several other studies also. In view of these observations, we propose that testing for syphilis by more sensitive and specific treponemal markers like TPHA rather than VDRL, rapid plasma reagin tests; as TPHA also has the added advantage of picking up all the high risk donors, whereas, VDRL picks up only currently infected donors. Moreover, TPHA should be continued as a marker of high risk behavior especially in high prevalence areas like India where we don′t have universal access to markers like nucleic acid amplification technique.

In this study, 108 P. multocida isolates recovered from various host animals such as cattle, buffalo, swine, poultry (chicken, duck, and emu) and rabbits were screened for carriage of 8 virulence associated genes. The results revealed some unique information on the prevalence of virulence associated genes among Indian isolates. With the exception of toxA gene, all other virulence associated genes were found to be regularly distributed among host species. Association study between capsule type and virulence genes suggested that pfhA, nanB, and nanH genes were regularly distributed among all serotypes with the exception of CapD, whereas toxA gene was found to be positively associated with CapD and CapA. The frequency of hgbA and nanH genes among swine isolates of Indian origin was found to be less in comparison to its equivalents around the globe. Interestingly, very high prevalence of tbpA gene was observed among poultry, swine, and rabbit isolates. Likewise, very high prevalence of pfhA gene (95.3%) was observed among Indian isolates, irrespective of host species origin.

Identification of outer membrane proteins (OMPs) is important to understand the bacteria structure and function, host-pathogen interaction, development of novel vaccine candidates, and diagnostic antigens. But till now the key antigens of P. multocida B:2 isolate causing haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) in animals are not clearly defined. In this study, P52 strain of P. multocida serotype B:2 was grown in vitro under iron-rich and iron-limited condition. The OMPs were extracted by sarkosyl method followed by SDS-PAGE and the proteins were identified by MALDI-TOF/MS analysis. In total, 22 proteins were identified, of which 7 were observed exclusively under iron-limited condition. Most of the high molecular weight proteins (TbpA, HgbA, HgbB, HasR, IroA, and HemR) identified in this study were involved in iron acquisition. Some hypothetical proteins (HP-KCU-10206, HP and AAUPMB 08244, HP AAUPMB 21592, HP AAUPMB 19766, AAUPMB 11295) were observed for the first time in this study which could be unique to serotype B:2. Further functional in vivo study of the proteins identified are required to explore the utility of these proteins in developing diagnostics and vaccine against HS.

A meta-analysis was performed to understand the role of zinc finger domains in proteins of resistance (R) genes cloned from different crops. We analyzed protein sequences of seventy R genes of various crops in which twenty six proteins were found to have zinc finger domains along with nucleotide binding sites - leucine rice repeats (NBS-LRR) domains. We identified thirty four zinc finger domains in the R proteins of nine crops and were grouped into 19 types of zinc fingers. The size of individual zinc finger domain within the R genes varied from 11 to 84 amino acids, whereas the size of proteins containing these domains varied from 263 to 1305 amino acids. The biophysical analysis revealed that molecular weight of Pi54 zinc finger was lowest whereas the highest one was found in rice Pib zinc finger named as Transposes Transcription Factor (TTF). The instability (R(2) =0.95) and the aliphatic (R(2) =0.94) indices profile of zinc finger domains follows the polynomial distribution pattern. The pairwise identity analysis showed that the Lin11, Isl-1 & Mec-3 (LIM) zinc finger domain of rice blast resistance protein pi21 have 12.3% similarity with the nuclear transcription factor, X-box binding-like 1 (NFX) type zinc finger domain of Pi54 protein. For the first time, we reported that Pi54 (Pi-k(h)-Tetep), a rice blast resistance (R) protein have a small zinc finger domain of NFX type located on the C-terminal in between NBS and LRR domains of the R-protein. Compositional analysis depicted by the helical wheel diagram revealed the presence of a hydrophobic region within this domain which might help in exposing the LRR region for a possible R-Avr interaction. This domain is unique among all other cloned plant disease resistance genes and might play an important role in broad-spectrum nature of rice blast resistance gene Pi54.
