11. Women's representation in STEM related education and careers : a case study of female university students in Saudi Arabia

Predicted skills shortages in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) have caused global concerns regarding skills shortage and economic competitiveness. Evidence suggesting flaws in this prediction have not deterred the implementation of numerous initiatives to attract untapped human capital to STEM careers. Women have been identified amongst the underrepresented groups in STEM education and careers; however, the drive to increase their representation has yielded minimal success. Consequently, the underrepresentation of women in STEM education and careers has developed into an issue of gender equality, particularly in secular societies. This study explores the representation of women in STEM education and careers in an Islamic country, Saudi Arabia, which has a distinctive gender-segregated society, one reinforced by cultural, religious, and social norms. This study also examines the influences on girls' decisions to pursue STEM education and careers by employing a mixed methods approach that focuses on the lived experiences of the participants. Questionnaires were administered to 352 female participants in one public university. Out of these, 312 were foundation year STEM track students (FYS), 30 were third year STEM students (TYS), and 10 were university faculty members (FM). Analysis of the survey data revealed that students' aspirations for STEM careers begins as early as grade 4; the favourite school subject is mathematics; and the most desired profession is medicine. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a sample of 35 participants: FYS (20), TYS (10), and FM (5). Analysis of the qualitative data revealed that girls do not experience subject-related gender stereotypes in public schools. Nevertheless, whilst they are empowered to study all science subjects, only the most academic can follow the science track in high school and university. It was also evident that career education in Saudi Arabian schools is inadequate and students rarely receive careers guidance in school, although they receive unparalleled encouragement and support from their parents and extended family. The findings of this study gave empirical support to Giddens' Structuration Theory. It reveals that social and cultural transformations are commonplace within female-only and family spheres, where the agentic actions of girls are enabled and, subsequently, lead to their empowerment within them. Yet, this study also demonstrates that, oftentimes, working women themselves contribute to the reproduction of social structures. It highlights the fact that the high uptake of Saudi women in STEM education in Saudi Arabia is not replicated in the labour market. The contribution of Saudi female STEM graduates has largely been constrained by the shortage of jobs for women, and cultural norms that prioritise family responsibilities. It is evident that structures in the public sphere are generally reproduced, and when transformations do occur, they are the result of government endorsements. This is a pivotal time in the lives of Saudi Arabian women, as the current structural changes outlined in the 2030 vision encourage the participation of women in the workforce. However, the swiftness of cultural changes may be dependent on individual and familial structures and aspirations. This study recommends strategies for increasing the autonomy of school teachers and principals, and for developing students' early interest in STEM subjects. Furthermore, it recommends the introduction of effective career education programs into schools and the involvement of parents in initiatives to equip students with knowledge, about possible careers and the labour market, prior to entering high school.

Abstract

The study assessed school based-management committees' (SBMCs') involvement in Managing public primary schools in Maiduguri Metropolis Borno State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to assess: SBMCs' involvement in provision of educational resources; maintenance of educational resources and SBMCs' involvement in maintenance of discipline among pupils in public primary schools in Maiduguri Metropolis, Borno State, Nigeria. Three research questions were answered. Survey research design was adopted for the study. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 19 head teachers out of the population of 39 head teachers of public primary schools in Maiduguri Metropolis, Borno State. Questionnaire was used for data collection. The questionnaire was validated and pilot tested. The validity index yielded a coefficient of 0.78, while the reliability index yielded a coefficient of 0.72. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the data. The findings of the study revealed that there were passive SBMCS' involvement in the provision of educational resources, there were active SBMCS' involvement in the maintenance of educational resources, as well as active involvement in maintenance of discipline among pupils in public primary schools in Maiduguri Metropolis Borno State, Nigeria. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that government should create awareness to enlighten parents, alumni, community leaders, religious leaders on the importance attached to SBMCs involvement in provision and managing educational resources as well as maintenance of discipline among pupils in public primary schools in Maiduguri Metropolis, Borno State, Nigeria.

Exosomes (Exos), belonging to extracellular vesicles, are cell‐derived nano‐sized vesicles with the potential to carry different kinds of biological molecules. Many studies have proved the impacts of exosomal cargo on several biological processes in female and male reproductive systems. It is also hypothesized that changes in exosomal cargo are integral to the promotion of certain pathological conditions, thus Exos can be used as valid biomarkers for the diagnosis of infertility and other abnormal conditions. Here, efforts are made to collect some recent data related to the physiological significance of Exos in the reproductive system, and their potential therapeutic effects. It is anticipated that the current review article will lay the groundwork for elucidating the source and mechanisms by which Exos control the reproductive system additionally supplying fresh methods and concepts for the detection and treatment of disorders associated with fertility for future studies. 19. Predicting the risk of mortality and rehospitalization in heart failure patients: A retrospective cohort study by machine learning approach.

Abstract

Background: Heart failure (HF) is a global problem, affecting more than 26 million people worldwide. This study evaluated the performance of 10 machine learning (ML) algorithms and chose the best algorithm to predict mortality and readmission of HF patients by using The Fasa Registry on Systolic HF (FaRSH) database. Hypothesis: ML algorithms may better identify patients at increased risk of HF readmission or death with demographic and clinical data. Methods: Through comprehensive evaluation, the best‐performing model was used for prediction. Finally, all the trained models were applied to the test data, which included 20% of the total data. For the final evaluation and comparison of the models, five metrics were used: accuracy, F1‐score, sensitivity, specificity and Area Under Curve (AUC). Results: Ten ML algorithms were evaluated. The CatBoost (CAT) algorithm uses a series of decision tree models to create a nonlinear model, and this CAT algorithm performed the best of the 10 models studied. According to the three final outcomes from this study, which involved 2488 participants, 366 (14.7%) of the patients were readmitted to the hospital, 97 (3.9%) of the patients died within 1 month of the follow‐up, and 342 (13.7%) of the patients died within 1 year of the follow‐up. The most significant variables to predict the events were length of stay in the hospital, hemoglobin level, and family history of MI. Conclusions: The ML‐based risk stratification tool was able to assess the risk of 5‐year all‐cause mortality and readmission in patients with HF. ML could provide an explicit explanation of individualized risk prediction and give physicians an intuitive understanding of the influence of critical features in the model. Abstract

A cold-induced homogenous liquid–liquid microextraction method combined with solidification of floating organic droplets effervescent-assisted dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction has been developed for simultaneous extraction of several pyrethroid and carbamate pesticides from edible oils. The extracted analytes were determined by high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector. For this purpose, 5 mL of edible oil sample was transferred into a glass test tube and it was mixed with 150 µL α-terpineol: acetic acid deep eutectic solvent. After vortexing (for 5 min), the mixture was placed into an ice: sodium chloride bath to adjust the solution temperature at −16℃. In this step, the oil sample was solidified, and the deep eutectic solvent was collected on top of the oil. Thus, it was collected and dispersed into 5.0 mL sodium carbonate solution at a concentration of 1.0 mol/L containing 2.5% w/v sodium chloride. In this step, the deep eutectic solvent was decomposed in the solution and α-terpineol dispersed in the sample solution. To obtain high extraction efficiency the effective parameters were optimised and under optimal conditions, the method showed broad linear ranges (2.6–500 ng/mL) with good coefficient of determinations ≥0.994. The extraction recoveries and enrichment factors of the method were in the ranges of 78–93% and 98–116%, respectively. The limits of detection and quantification were within the range of 0.2–0.8 and 0.6–2.6 ng/mL, respectively. 21. Involving non-academic users in social science research : collaboration between management academics and practitioners

Abstract

The motif of a 'closer relationship' between academics and practitioners in doing research and the impetus for 'user engagement' in different stages of social science research has become a subject of considerable interest to policy-makers over recent years and has featured in policy statements of government. Following the UK Government's 1993 White Paper, Realising our Potential: A Strategy for Science, Engineering and Technology, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) emphasised meeting the needs of the non-academic users of social science research and introduced a policy which enhanced funding opportunities to academics proposing to engage with an explicit agenda of collaboration. But is this initiative sufficient to realise the benefit of its proposed outcomes? Are policy-makers aware of the possibilities and limitations of research collaboration between academics and practitioners in practice? The aim of this qualitative study is to explore the perceptions of academics and practitioners of the process of research collaboration and to provide a better understanding of this process. Projects for study were identified from those which were on ESRC's list of funded research projects in the management discipline and which appeared to be responding to the ESRC's encouragement of collaboration between academics and non-academic users of their research. Findings from this study are presented through three cases of research collaboration between academics and practitioners, who were interviewed in their workplaces. The findings are combined with the results of supplementary interviews with academics in other management departments in British universities and policy-makers in the ESRC. Bringing the results together demonstrates how research collaboration works out in practice, and what the academics' and practitioners' views of research collaboration are. The findings also reveal some limitations of collaboration on both sides which need to be considered by those promoting or entering into research collaboration. In addition, this study develops a theoretical discussion of research collaboration based on existing literature of collaboration in other contexts (especially science and technology Research and Development and inter-organisational collaboration) and suggests directions for future research.

Abstract

Forest is the most significant habitat for birds by supporting around 75% of all bird species while only 45% of all bird species have adapted to humans modified habitats. The research was conducted in the Montane Forest Research Station, Jos, Plateau State, in other to determine the abundance, diversity and effect of habitat types on bird’s species diversity. Fifteen transects of 200m were laid in the three habitat types (riparian forest, farmland and residential area) using stratified random sampling method. The data collected were analysed using R console. Shannon Weiner diversity index was used to analyse species diversity while generalized linear model was used to determine the effect of the habitat variables on bird species diversity. The result showed a total number of 1466 individual birds belonging to 17 families and 60 bird species were sighted. The abundance of birds was highest in riparian forest (2252), farmland (1732) and Residential area (1094) with no significance difference (p=0.177). Species richness was higher in the riparian forest (57), farmland (49), and the residential area (44). It also revealed that bird diversity index was highly significant. Riparian forest had the highest diversity (4.77), and the species were more evenly distributed (0.6) as compared to the other habitat types. The higher the number of trees and canopy cover the higher the diversity of species as was observed in the riparian forest where forest species that weren’t seen in the other habitats were found. The farmland and residential areas also hold a considerable number of some generalist bird species due to some patches of vegetation found in the habitat. Therefore, conservation efforts should be directed towards keeping vegetation intact in human dominated areas, as it serves as repository for bird species which are ecologically important. Hence, planting trees (economic, fruit and ornamental) should be encouraged.

Abstract

Busulfan (BSU) is a chemotherapeutic drug that can cause subfertility or sterility in males. We investigated the effects of adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AT-MSC) conditioned medium (CM) (AT-MSC-CM) on histopathological and molecular characteristics of mouse testes exposed to BSU using stereology. We used adult male mice divided randomly into five groups: control, Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), BSU, and BSU + CM. Thirty-five days following BSU injection, sperm and testis tissues were harvested for stereological and molecular studies. The BSU group exhibited significantly reduced testis volume, interstitium and tubules compared to the other groups, although the volume of the testis remained unchanged for BSU and CM groups. The number of testis cells was reduced in the BSU group compared to the other groups. The CM group exhibited a significantly increased number of testis cells compared to the BSU group. Sperm count and motility, and length density of seminiferous tubules were increased in CM group compared to the BSU group. Abstract

The perceived risk is assessed in order to conduct subjective evaluation of individual or community of probability of occurrence of accidents, crashes, and way of exposure to the related consequences. Although such estimation may not comply with what it occurs in real situation since this part is totally related to psychological aspect and at the same time it should be incorporated in planning for risk management. With respect to literacy, cultural, and gender levels and beliefs in communities, perception of the probable risk may be followed by some fluctuations. It has been tried in the present project to explore effect of factor of fear of disease on perceived possible risk among the people who live at neighborhood of MDF Manufacturing Companies. To analyze the rate of effect of fear of disease on the perceived possible risk at region and their relationship with demographic attributes including age, gender, education, having children, and employment in factory, the questionnaire with close-end questions of Likert spectrum type was administered. Data were analyzed by SPSS (v.16) and two-sample t-test and Pearson’s correlation coefficient and linear regression with (p<0.05). Based on the results, out of total respondents 228 persons (79.2%) were males and 60 one (20.8%) were females and among these respondents 180 members (62.5%) had children. The maximum average age (30-40years) and the highest educational level belonged to high school diploma with 125 members (43.4%) and the maximum annual expenses were estimated (50-100 million Rials). 44. Quality of life in people with diabetes: a systematic review of studies in Iran.

Abstract

Evaluation of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among people with diabetes has been growing in Iran over the last decade. The main aim of the current study was to systematically review the characteristics of these studies and examine quality of their findings. Persian (SID, Magiran) and English (Pubmed, Medline, Web of Science, CINAHL, Scopus, PsycINFO and ERIC) databases were systematically searched using the search terms: "diabetes" AND "quality of life" AND "Iran". The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. A total of 46 studies passed the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The included studies were conducted in 20 out of 30 provinces of the country. Most studies investigated HRQoL among people with type 2 diabetes. The Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and WHO quality of life instruments (WHOQOL) were the main instruments used in these studies. Studies showed that people with diabetes had lower HRQoL than people without diabetes. Better socioeconomic status and better control of cardiovascular risk factors were associated with better HRQoL among the patients with diabetes. In general, the predictors of HRQoL among Iranian patients were similar to their international counterparts implying that diabetes patients share many common features. The reviewed studies suffer from major methodological and reporting flaws which limit validity and generalizability of their findings.

Abstract

Patients with severe heart disease may have coexisting liver disease from various causes. The incidence of combined heart-liver transplant (CHLT) is increasing as more patients with congenital heart disease survive to adulthood and develop advanced heart failure with associated liver disease from chronic right-sided heart or Fontan failure. However, the criteria for CHLT have not been established. To address this unmet need, a virtual consensus conference was organized on June 10, 2022, endorsed by the American Society of Transplantation. The conference represented a collaborative effort by experts in cardiothoracic and liver transplantation from across the United States to assess interdisciplinary criteria for liver transplantation in the CHLT candidate, surgical considerations of CHLT, current allocation system that generally results in the liver following the heart for CHLT, and optimal post-CHLT management. The conference served as a forum to unify criteria between the different specialties and to forge a pathway for patients who may need dual organ transplantation. Due to the continuing shortage of available donor organs, ethical issues related to multiorgan transplantation were also debated. The findings and consensus statements are presented.

48. The Effect of Spirulina Supplementation on Blood Pressure in Adults: A GRADE-Assessed Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials.

Abstract

Previous studies have yielded controversial results regarding the effect of spirulina on blood pressure (BP), which need updating. So, this updated systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) carry out a more accurate estimation of the effect of spirulina on BP in adults. This systematic searches (in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science) until April 1, 2024, to identify related RCTs based on PICOS guidelines (population (individuals > 18 years old), the intervention (spirulina), the comparison (control or placebo group), the outcomes (systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP)), the study design (RCTs)), and PRISMA-checklist (Supporting Information, data S2). We evaluated the impact of spirulina on DBP and SBP. Conventional procedures were employed for analyzing publication bias, heterogeneity, and sensitivity. The GRADE criteria and the Cochrane assessment method were employed to evaluate the risk of bias (ROB) and certainty of evidence across the studies, respectively. The result shows spirulina consumption decreases SBP (WMD: -4.41 mmHg, 95% CI: -6.74 to -2.07, I 2  = 66.1%) and DBP (WMD: -2.84 mmHg, 95% CI: -4.65 to -1.03, I 2  = 62.3%). Subgroup analysis demonstrated SBP and DBP were still lower in individuals with ≥ 120 and ≥ 80 mmHg, hypertension (HTN) individuals, overweight individuals, age > 50 years, and > 8 weeks of intervention. Indeed, we do not observe publication bias, ROB, or interference studies in the overall results of BPs, and based on GRADE, our outcomes have moderate quality. Because of the low number of studies and participants, the dose-response and meta-regression are not significant. His study demonstrated spirulina intervention decreased SBP and DBP in HTN and overweight individuals, age > 50 years, and > 8 weeks of intervention. So, spirulina intake decreases BP and could be used in clinical practice. Furthermore, more and high-quality RCTs are needed to establish the clinical efficacy of the spirulina and determine cutoff spirulina interventions based on dose and duration.
