This paper investigates the key factors that contribute to the success of movies. By using sentiment and survival analysis, this study classified 1,038 movies according to the customer comments and movie characteristics and compared the number of screening days, the primary measure of success of movies, between the groups. Based on the analysis of film reviews (i.e., positive, negative, and neutral), screening days showed significant differences between (1) the positive and neutral groups, negative and neutral groups, (2) the density (|positive—negative comments|) of the positive and negative groups, (3) drama and action, drama and comedy, (4) domestic and foreign films, (5) G-Rated and R-Rated, R-Rated and X-rated films.

This study applied input–output analysis to examine the industrial linkage effects of the logistics service industry based on the data collected from input–output tables provided by the World Input–Output Database. The results showed the detailed industrial linkage effects of the logistics service industry, indicating several logistics sectors (transportation, storage, and handling) are not only interdependent but they also form a service ecosystem. The study results provide new insights on industrial linkage effects of the logistics service industry and their ripple effects throughout the economy. The results will be valuable source of knowledge for establishing service industrial policies for both the logistics industry and a country’s economy as a whole.

The purpose of this study is to provide concrete growth strategies and practical development methods in the beauty service industry. This study consists of a SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat) analysis from the literature review and in-depth interviews with experts of the beauty service industry in South Korea. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is applied to the finalized SWOT matrix to incorporate experts’ ideas. The combined high priority factors present four types of strategic alternatives: Strength–Opportunity (SO), Strength–Threat (ST), Weakness–Opportunity (WO), and Weakness–Threat (WT). This study applies an environmental analysis framework from the management strategy field to construct a sophisticated SWOT matrix. Furthermore, this study quantifies the importance of SWOT components through AHP to determine priorities to lay the groundwork for timely and sustainable strategy development in the beauty service industry. Based on the SWOT-AHP analysis, this study suggests that beauty service companies should pay attention to the lack of profitability and employee stress with high turnover rates caused by poor working conditions and emotional labor. In addition, the Korean government should gradually shift away from the lack of an effective legal system to grow the beauty industry.

Although fast followers have been making huge investments on their expansion strategies to surpass first movers and dominate the market, they have encountered the trilemma of being unable to simultaneously obtain high market shares, high business profit rates, and high brand innovativeness. This study used the Trade-off model and Diffusion of Innovation theory to statistically examine the trilemma phenomenon in the global smartphone market and revealed that during the early stage of market entry, a company should actively source and use bigmouth consumers and killer app developers, invest limited resources to expand its target market with the aim of sales profits, and develop specifically for innovation. Starting from the later stage of its market growth period, a company should establish some alternative strategies for responding to the possible reduction in the efficacy of marketing expenses.

In quench subcooled-jet boiling, an effective cooling of large surface area is achieved with jet arrays. Here a stainless-steel plate initially superheated at 900 °C is cooled with seven hexagonally arranged water [1 atm, 20 °C (80 °C subcooling)] jets (7j), and with varying jet separation distance (with a jet Reynolds number ReD = 5000). Using high-definition visualization synchronized with the surface thermal characterization based on the inverse-conduction analysis allows calculation of the spatial and temporal variations of the local and average heat flux (q) and heat transfer coefficient (h). The local and temporal peaks in q and h occur under the jets with enhancements in the regions of their interactions. We compare these results with the prior two jets (2j) and single jet (1j) results (with ReD = 15,000). For a jet separation of four nozzle diameter (S/Dn = 4), the 7j behavior is close to the single jet (1j), while with larger separation extra h peaks occur and the cooling becomes more effective (larger cooling area, but with smaller area-averaged heat transfer coefficient 〈h〉). For S/Dn = 10, the 7j enhanced cooling effectiveness is smaller than the 2j effectiveness, suggesting using similar total liquid flow rate, fewer jets are preferred. The cooling effectiveness enhancement for the S/Dn = 6 arrangement is the highest, reaching 50% and covering a large high-h area, and over a long elapsed time.

Purpose Starting from industry 4.0 in Germany and followed by the New Strategy for American Innovation in the USA and the smartization strategy in Japan, developed countries are pushing nation-wide innovation strategies. Similarly, China is pursuing the Made in China 2025, and Korea announced the Manufacturing Industry Innovation 3.0 strategy. However, few researchers have identified the industrial structure that establishes the foundation of the 4th Industrial Revolution or have derived strengths and weaknesses to provide implications on policy formulation through quantitative comparison with developed countries. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the spillover effect of the information and communication technology (ICT) industry (the foundation of the 4th Industrial Revolution) and machinery·equipment industry (the foundation of smart manufacturing through convergence with ICT industry). Design/methodology/approach This study examines the industrial spillover effects of the ICT industry and machinery·equipment industry in the USA, Germany, Japan, China and Korea by using the World Input–Output Table from 2000 to 2014. Findings The results showed that backward linkage effect of the ICT Industry are high in the order of Korea≑China>Japan>the USA≑Germany, and forward linkage effect of the ICT industry are high in the order of Japan ≑> the USA≑Korea ≑> China ≑> Germany. Backward linkage effects of the machinery·equipment industry are high in the order of China>Japan≑Korea>the USA>Germany, and forward linkage effects of the machinery·equipment industry are high in the order of China>Korea>Germany≑Japan≑the USA. Practical implications China and Korea encourage active government investment in ICT and machinery·equipment industries, especially the intentional convergence between ICT and machinery·equipment industries is expected be generate higher synergy. The “innovation in manufacturing” strategy in the USA that utilizes its strength in ICT services seems appropriate, whereas Germany needs to revitalize the ICT industry to strengthen its manufacturing industry. Japan’s strategy is to focus its ICT capabilities on robot sector. While the scope of innovation is limited, its synergy is worth expecting. Originality/value This study attempted to provide a theoretical approach to the determination of national policy strategies and provide practical implications for response to the impacts of the 4th Industrial Revolution, by comparing the inducement effects of ICT and machinery·equipment industries between major countries.

This study examined the relationship among competitive advantage, catch-up, and linkage effects using Input–Output (IO) data of the information and communications technology (ICT) industry between South Korea and India. ICT industry was classified into ICT manufacturing and ICT service sectors on the basis of the taxonomic definitions provided by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Data were collected from World Input–Output Database (WIOD) ranging from 2000 to 2014 in order to quantitatively estimate the forward linkage (FL) and backward linkage (BL) effects. This study then used Leontief’s IO models to compute the FL and BL effects of ICT manufacturing and ICT service of Korea and India. Thereafter, four separate univariate analyses of variance were performed to statistically test the research hypotheses developed based on literature review and conceptual framework. The results of the study revealed that (1) an industry with competitive advantage had a higher FL effect and (2) a catch-up growing industry had a higher BL effect. In conclusion, ICT manufacturing and service sectors between Korea and India have very different characteristics and effects on each national economy.

Enhancement resulting from interaction of two adjacent jets impinging on largely superheated stainless-steel plate (900 °C, initial induction heating) is recorded and analyzed with inverse-conduction analysis and high-definition visualization. Subcooled water jets (20 °C, 1 atm, Reynolds number 1.5 × 104) with varying jet separation distance W (up to 30 nozzle diameters of Dn) show that the spreading liquid wetting fronts merge and the heat transfer coefficient increases substantially in the merged region, which follows an elapsed time of isolated-jet behavior. This enhancement is presented as the time-dependent two-jet cooling effectiveness with a peak of 1.6 (60% enhancement) for W/Dn = 10 at t = 3 s, followed by decay. This enhancement decreases with increasing Dn, but overlapping jets create some enhancement for all jet separations. In the interaction region, the plate undergoes rapid temperature drop (by lateral conduction toward the jet centers), reaching large cooling rate of 600 K/s.

Purpose: Although the growth of trade industry has been pushed mainly by intermediary trades due to Koreas geopolitical characteristics, intermediary trades fail to take the pivotal role in industrial growth because the environment could not support the industry on the national level. This study intends to help find new trade structures and directions to break the problem, by comparing Korea with the Netherlands, which has similar characteristics with Korea. Design/methodology/approach: This study applied the competitive import model and used data from World Input-output Data(WIOD), and focused on Information and Communications Technologies(ICT) manufacturing and ICT service industries as the key industries in Korea, and chemical and medical industries as the key industries in the Netherlands. Findings: The results indicated that Koreas ICT manufacturing and chemical industries have high backward linkage effect, while the Netherlands ICT manufacturing, ICT service, and medical industries have high forward linkage effect. Research limitations/implications: When comparing between industries, it is clearer to consider not only the effect of generating production but also the creation of value added and the creation of employment in order to directly compare differences. As a contribution, comparisons between countries with large-scale trade were found to require the use of competitive models over non-competitive ones. Originality/value: This study showed that competitive analysis model should be used instead of non-competitive import model when Input-Output(IO) analysis is applied to countries with a high proportion of intermediary trade.

The information and communication technology (ICT) industry affects other industries and economic sectors through technology diffusion and information transformation. This study uses input–output (IO) table to examine the industrial impact and competitive advantage of the ICT industry in China from 2002 until 2012. We concluded that (1) the ICT industry has partially higher industrial impact and competitive advantage over the non-ICT industry. The results of this study imply that promoting the ICT industry could help boost China’s economy, and investing offered possibilities for gaining more benefits compared to the non-ICT industry.

본 연구는 1996년부터 2011년까지 투입산출표를 이용하여 해당 기간 동안 한국의 ICT 산업과 자동차 산업의 산업연쇄효과 및 경쟁우위를 비교하였다. 국제표준산업분류(ISIC Rev.4)에 따라 ICT 산업을 분류하여 범위를 명확히 하였으며, 제품의 특성, 혁신주기에 따라 ICT 산업 내 제조업과 서비스업, 그리고 자동차 산업 내 제조업과 서비스업 부문으로 분류하였다. 연구 결과는, (1) ICT 산업은 수요 (Backward Linkage Effect)와 공급(Forward Linkage Effect) 측면에서 자동차 산업의 평균과 비슷한 수준의 파급효과를 가지고 있다. (2) ICT 제조업은 수요와 공급 측면에서 ICT 서비스업의 평균보다 높은 수준의 파급효과를 가지고 있다. (3) 자동차 제조업은 수요와 공급 측면에서 모두 높은 수준의 파급효과를 갖지만, 자동차 서비스업은 공급 측면에서만 높은 수준의 파급효과를 갖는다. (4) ICT 제조업은 수요와 공급 측면에서 모두 높은 수준의 파급효과를 갖지만, 자동차 제조업은 공급 측면에서 높은 수준의 파급효과를 갖는다. (5) ICT 서비스업은 수요 측면에서 높은 수준의 파급효과를 가지고 있었으나 그 효과가 줄어들고 있고, 자동차 서비스업은 공급 측면에서 높은 수준의 파급효과를 갖는다고 보여준다. 이러한 연구 결과를 통하여, 이 전의 연구들에서 논의가 되었던 ICT 산업에 대한 분류 기준을 명확히 제시하였으며 ICT 산업과 자동차 산업에 대한 파급효과 및 중요성을 확인하고, 정책적 시사점을 제시하였다.

This study examines the differences in business insolvency between the information and communication technology (ICT) industry and the automobile industry, as well as their sub-categories of manufacturers and service providers, based on survival analysis. The results indicate that, unlike the technology diffusion model, the survival analysis provided clearer explanations on the differences in business solvency among ICT, automobile, manufacturing, and service firms. We found that insolvency of ICT firms is influenced by the short life cycle of the products/services that these firms provide to their customers, as compared to a much longer life cycle of the products of manufacturers. We also identified that ICT service providers’ business depends heavily on ICT manufacturers, but to strengthen their survival ability they must continuously introduce technological innovations. In addition, the study examined the causes of business insolvency of ICT firms based on the characteristics of the ICT industry, including the swing effect, the bandwagon effect, and winner-take-all outcomes. The study results provide valuable insights in developing survival strategies for ICT and automobile firms. The study also makes contributions to the literature in that the business insolvency phenomenon can be better explained through statistical significance analysis.

Boiling heat transfer of subcooled water jet impingement on highly superheated plate is investigated with heat transfer analysis and high-definition flow visualization. The stainless steel plate initially heated up to 900 °C by an induction heating is quenched with the water temperature of 15 °C. The surface temperature and heat flux are estimated by solving 2-D inverse heat conduction problem. The temporal visualization during quench subcooled-jet impingement boiling is synchronized with the heat transfer measurement in the corresponding surface temperature and heat flux. Spread of the subcooled jet over the horizontal plate shows a quasi-steady regime where the wetting front spreads linearly with time. The time for onset of the quasi-steady regime can be explained by a quasi-steady time. The front separates the single-phase/collapsed-bubble region from the outside region which is dry if not for the impinging droplets ejected from the front. As the front expands, the surface experiences a sequence of single-phase, collapsed-bubble, wetting front evaporation and ejected-droplet evaporation cooling. The fraction of water ejected from the front increases linearly with time (reaches over 10%) and is also predicted.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the purchase intention in the case of smartphone advertising, which is unlike any other advertising media. Design/methodology/approach This study examines the characteristics of recent mobile advertisements such as brand attitude and context awareness value, which have not been considered in studies on non-mobile advertisements, to address purchase intention through smartphone advertisements using structural equation modeling. Findings The results are as follows. Together with entertainment, information, irritation, and personalization in non-mobile advertisements, timing and location in mobile advertisements are the main factors for establishing consumers’ purchase intention. Further, although mobile advertisements’ context awareness value strongly impacts consumers’ advertising attitude and brand attitude, purchase intention receives greater impact from brand attitude than from advertising attitude because the products/services lack feel and touch. Originality/value These results imply that contextual advertising and new technology enabling feel and touch for products/services can maximize the effect of mobile advertisements.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the influence of the frequency of word exposure on online news based on the availability heuristic concept. So that this is different from most churn prediction studies that focus on subscriber data. Design/methodology/approach This study examined the churn prediction through words presented the previous studies and additionally identified words what churn generate using data mining technology in combination with logistic regression, decision tree graphing, neural network models, and a partial least square (PLS) model. Findings This study found prediction rates similar to those delivered by subscriber data-based analyses. In addition, because previous studies do not clearly suggest the effects of the factors, this study uses decision tree graphing and PLS modeling to identify which words deliver positive or negative influences. Originality/value These findings imply an expansion of churn prediction, advertising effect, and various psychological studies. It also proposes concrete ideas to advance the competitive advantage of companies, which not only helps corporate development, but also improves industry-wide efficiency.
