We present 850 $��$m polarimetric observations toward the Serpens Main molecular cloud obtained using the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. These observations probe the magnetic field morphology of the Serpens Main molecular cloud on about 6000 au scales, which consists of cores and six filaments with different physical properties such as density and star formation activity. Using the histogram of relative orientation (HRO) technique, we find that magnetic fields are parallel to filaments in less dense filamentary structures where $N_{H_2} < 0.93\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ (magnetic fields perpendicular to density gradients), while being perpendicular to filaments (magnetic fields parallel to density gradients) in dense filamentary structures with star formation activity. Moreover, applying the HRO technique to denser core regions, we find that magnetic field orientations change to become perpendicular to density gradients again at $N_{H_2} \approx 4.6 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. This can be interpreted as a signature of core formation. At $N_{H_2} \approx 16 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ magnetic fields change back to being parallel to density gradients once again, which can be understood to be due to magnetic fields being dragged in by infalling material. Tao-Chung Ching et al., We present 850 μm dust polarization observations of the massive DR21 filament from the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and the SCUBA-2 camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We detect ordered magnetic fields perpendicular to the parsec-scale ridge of the DR21 main filament. In the subfilaments, the magnetic fields are mainly parallel to the filamentary structures and smoothly connect to the magnetic fields of the main filament. We compare the POL-2 and Planck dust polarization observations to study the magnetic field structures of the DR21 filament on 0.1–10 pc scales. The magnetic fields revealed in the Planck data are well-aligned with those of the POL-2 data, indicating a smooth variation of magnetic fields from large to small scales. The plane-of-sky magnetic field strengths derived from angular dispersion functions of dust polarization are 0.6–1.0 mG in the DR21 filament and ∼0.1 mG in the surrounding ambient gas. The mass-to-flux ratios are found to be magnetically supercritical in the filament and slightly subcritical to nearly critical in the ambient gas. The alignment between column density structures and magnetic fields changes from random alignment in the low-density ambient gas probed by Planck to mostly perpendicular in the high-density main filament probed by James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Hwang et al., We present and analyze observations of polarized dust emission at 850 μm toward the central 1 × 1 pc hub-filament structure of Monoceros R2 (Mon R2). The data are obtained with SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-fields in Star-forming Region Observations survey. The orientations of the magnetic field follow the spiral structure of Mon R2, which are well described by an axisymmetric magnetic field model. We estimate the turbulent component of the magnetic field using the angle difference between our observations and the best-fit model of the underlying large-scale mean magnetic field. This estimate is used to calculate the magnetic field strength using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, for which we also obtain the distribution of volume density and velocity dispersion using a column density map derived from Herschel data and the C18O (J = 3 − 2) data taken with HARP on the JCMT, respectively. We make maps of magnetic field strengths and mass-to-flux ratios, finding that magnetic field strengths vary from 0.02 to 3.64 mG with a mean value of 1.0 ± 0.06 mG, and the mean critical mass-to-flux ratio is 0.47 ± 0.02. Additionally, the mean Alfvén Mach number is 0.35 ± 0.01. This suggests that, in Mon R2, the magnetic fields provide resistance against large-scale gravitational collapse, and the magnetic pressure exceeds the turbulent pressure. We also investigate the properties of each filament in Mon R2. Watt et al. [J Eng Math 75(1):1–14, 2012] have shown that one can obtain good results for the propagation of detonation waves in cylindrical charges by assuming that the post-shock streamlines are straight. In this paper, we compare this Straight Streamline Approximation (SSA) to high-resolution Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) for different models of explosives. We find that the SSA is less accurate for realistic explosion models than it is for polytropic equations of state with power-law reaction rates.

We present the results of simultaneous 450 $\mu$m and 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the massive star forming region NGC 2071IR, a target of the BISTRO (B-fields in Star-Forming Region Observations) Survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and SCUBA-2 camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find a pinched magnetic field morphology in the central dense core region, which could be due to a rotating toroidal disk-like structure and a bipolar outflow originating from the central young stellar object, IRS 3. Using the modified Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, we obtain a plane-of-sky magnetic field strength of 563$\pm$421 $\mu$G in the central $\sim$0.12 pc region from 850 $\mu$m polarization data. The corresponding magnetic energy density of 2.04$\times$10$^{-8}$ erg cm$^{-3}$ is comparable to the turbulent and gravitational energy densities in the region. We find that the magnetic field direction is very well aligned with the whole of the IRS 3 bipolar outflow structure. We find that the median value of polarization fractions, 3.0 \%, at 450 $\mu$m in the central 3 arcminute region, which is larger than the median value of 1.2 \% at 850 $\mu$m. The trend could be due to the better alignment of warmer dust in the strong radiation environment. We also find that polarization fractions decrease with intensity at both wavelengths, with slopes, determined by fitting a Rician noise model, of $0.59 \pm 0.03$ at 450 $\mu$m and $0.36 \pm 0.04$ at 850 $\mu$m, respectively. We think that the shallow slope at 850 $\mu$m is due to grain alignment at the center being assisted by strong radiation from the central young stellar objects., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

Previous studies (Watt et al. in J Eng Math 75(1):1, 2012; Cartwright and Falle in J Eng Math 115(1):157, 2019) have shown that a streamline based approach to modelling of steady state detonations can produce good results for rate laws which have maximal reaction at the shock. In this paper we consider a Variational Streamline Approximation (VSA) which introduces streamline curvature. Comparing results with Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) and the existing Straight Streamline Approximation (SSA) model, we find that the VSA improves the predictive accurary of streamlines modelling compared to DNS calculations, capturing the shock front and sonic surfaces with greater accuracy than SSA.

We have obtained sensitive dust continuum polarization observations at 850 μm in the B213 region of Taurus using POL-2 on SCUBA-2 at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as part of the B-fields in STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. These observations allow us to probe magnetic field (B-field) at high spatial resolution (∼2000 au or ∼0.01 pc at 140 pc) in two protostellar cores (K04166 and K04169) and one prestellar core (Miz-8b) that lie within the B213 filament. Using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, we estimate the B-field strengths in K04166, K04169, and Miz-8b to be 38 ± 14, 44 ± 16, and 12 ± 5 μG, respectively. These cores show distinct mean B-field orientations. The B-field in K04166 is well ordered and aligned parallel to the orientations of the core minor axis, outflows, core rotation axis, and large-scale uniform B-field, in accordance with magnetically regulated star formation via ambipolar diffusion taking place in K04166. The B-field in K04169 is found to be ordered but oriented nearly perpendicular to the core minor axis and large-scale B-field and not well correlated with other axes. In contrast, Miz-8b exhibits a disordered B-field that shows no preferred alignment with the core minor axis or large-scale field. We found that only one core, K04166, retains a memory of the large-scale uniform B-field. The other two cores, K04169 and Miz-8b, are decoupled from the large-scale field. Such a complex B-field configuration could be caused by gas inflow onto the filament, even in the presence of a substantial magnetic flux.

We report the first high spatial resolution measurement of magnetic fields surrounding LkH$\alpha$ 101, a part of the Auriga-California molecular cloud. The observations were taken with the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope within the framework of the B-fields In Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. Observed polarization of thermal dust emission at 850 $\mu$m is found to be mostly associated with the red-shifted gas component of the cloud. The magnetic field displays a relatively complex morphology. Two variants of the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, unsharp masking and structure function, are used to calculate the strength of magnetic fields in the plane of the sky, yielding a similar result of $B_{\rm POS}\sim 115$ $\mathrm{\mu}$G. The mass-to-magnetic-flux ratio in critical value units, $\lambda\sim0.3$, is the smallest among the values obtained for other regions surveyed by POL-2. This implies that the LkH$\alpha$ 101 region is sub-critical and the magnetic field is strong enough to prevent gravitational collapse. The inferred $\delta B/B_0\sim 0.3$ implies that the large scale component of the magnetic field dominates the turbulent one. The variation of the polarization fraction with total emission intensity can be fitted by a power-law with an index of $\alpha=0.82\pm0.03$, which lies in the range previously reported for molecular clouds. We find that the polarization fraction decreases rapidly with proximity to the only early B star (LkH$\alpha$ 101) in the region. We present new observations of the active star formation region NGC 1333 in the Perseus molecular cloud complex from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope B -Fields In Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey with the POL-2 instrument. The BISTRO data cover the entire NGC 1333 complex (∼1.5 pc × 2 pc) at 0.02 pc resolution and spatially resolve the polarized emission from individual filamentary structures for the first time. The inferred magnetic field structure is complex as a whole, with each individual filament aligned at different position angles relative to the local field orientation. We combine the BISTRO data with low- and high- resolution data derived from Planck and interferometers to study the multiscale magnetic field structure in this region. The magnetic field morphology drastically changes below a scale of ∼1 pc and remains continuous from the scales of filaments (∼0.1 pc) to that of protostellar envelopes (∼0.005 pc or ∼1000 au). Finally, we construct simple models in which we assume that the magnetic field is always perpendicular to the long axis of the filaments. We demonstrate that the observed variation of the relative orientation between the filament axes and the magnetic field angles are well reproduced by this model, taking into account the projection effects of the magnetic field and filaments relative to the plane of the sky. The present study addresses the reaction zone structure and burning mechanism of unstable detonations. Experiments investigated mainly two-dimensional methane–oxygen cellular detonations in a thin channel geometry. The sufficiently high temporal resolution permitted the determination of the probability density function of the shock distribution, a power law with an exponent of $-3$, and the burning rate of unreacted pockets from their edges – through surface turbulent flames with a speed approximately 3–7 times larger than the laminar one at the local conditions. Numerical simulations were performed using a novel large-eddy simulation method where the reactions due to both autoignition and turbulent transport were treated exactly at the subgrid scale in a reaction–diffusion formulation. The model is an extension of Kerstein and Menon’s linear eddy model for large-eddy simulation to treat flows with shock waves and rapid gas-dynamic transients. The two-dimensional simulations recovered well the amplification of the laminar flame speed due to the turbulence generated mainly by the shear layers originating from the triple points and subsequent Richtmyer–Meshkov instability associated with the internal pressure waves. The simulations clarified how the level of turbulence generated controlled the burning rate of the pockets, the hydrodynamic thickness of the wave, the cellular structure and its distribution. Three-dimensional simulations were found to be in general good agreement with the two-dimensional ones, in that the subgrid-scale model captured the ensuing turbulent burning once the scales associated with the cellular dynamics, where turbulent kinetic energy is injected, are well resolved.

[Abridged] Filaments and hubs have received special attention recently thanks to studies showing their role in star formation. While the column density and velocity structures of both filaments and hubs have been studied, their magnetic fields (B-field) are not yet characterized. We aim to understand the role of the B-field in the dynamical evolution of the NGC 6334 hub-filament network. We present new observations of the dust polarized emission at 850$\mu$m towards NGC 6334 obtained with the JCMT/POL-2. We study the distribution and dispersion of the polarized intensity ($PI$), the polarization fraction ($PF$), and the B-field angle ($\theta_{B}$). We derive the power spectrum of the intensity and $\theta_{B}$ along the ridge crest. Our analyses show a complex B-field structure when observed over the whole region ($\sim10$ pc), however, at smaller scales ($\sim1$ pc), $\theta_{B}$ varies coherently along the filaments. The observed power spectrum of $\theta_{B}$ can be well represented with a power law function with a slope $-1.33\pm0.23$, which is $\sim20\%$ shallower than that of $I$. This result is compatible with the properties of simulated filaments and may indicate the processes at play in the formation of filaments. $\theta_{B}$ rotates from being mostly perpendicular to the filament crests to mostly parallel as they merge with the hubs. This variation of $\theta_{B}$ may be tracing local velocity flows of matter in-falling onto the hubs. Our analysis suggests a variation of the energy balance along the crests of these filaments, from magnetically critical/supercritical at their far ends to magnetically subcritical near the hubs. We present the 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the IC5146 filamentary cloud taken using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA-2) and its associated polarimeter (POL-2), mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), as part of the B-fields In STar forming Regions Observations (BISTRO). This work is aimed at revealing the magnetic field morphology within a core-scale ($\lesssim 1.0$ pc) hub-filament structure (HFS) located at the end of a parsec-scale filament. To investigate whether or not the observed polarization traces the magnetic field in the HFS, we analyze the dependence between the observed polarization fraction and total intensity using a Bayesian approach with the polarization fraction described by the Rice likelihood function, which can correctly describe the probability density function (PDF) of the observed polarization fraction for low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data. We find a power-law dependence between the polarization fraction and total intensity with an index of 0.56 in $A_V\sim$ 20--300 mag regions, suggesting that the dust grains in these dense regions can still be aligned with magnetic fields in the IC5146 regions. Our polarization maps reveal a curved magnetic field, possibly dragged by the contraction along the parsec-scale filament. We further obtain a magnetic field strength of 0.5$\pm$0.2 mG toward the central hub using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, corresponding to a mass-to-flux criticality of $\sim$ $1.3\pm0.4$ and an Alfv\'{e}nic Mach number of $, Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

In the published article, we presented high-resolution polarimetry data obtained by using JCMT SCUBA-2/POL-2, and compared them with the larger-scale magnetic structure observed by Planck (Planck Collaboration et al. 2020). There was a miscalculation in the analysis of the Planck data for comparison, and the mean position angle of the Planck magnetic field should be corrected from -40° ± 7° to -48° ± 6°. Thus, we replace the descriptions in the published article as follows. In Section 4.2, paragraph 3, the second sentence should read: "The differences between the orientations of IRAS 4A, IRAS 4B, and IRAS 2A are not statistically significant, but they do show significantly different orientations from those of the global B-field observed by Planck (-48° ± 6°; Section 4.1)." In Section 4.1, paragraph 3, the second line should read: "The Planck B-field orientation shows a smoothly and slowly varying field distribution with a position angle of -48° ± 6° in our observed NGC 1333 area." Accordingly, we replace Figures 4, 5, 9, 10, and 17 to reflect the correct Planck data. As described above, this error of modest magnitude is related only to our derivation of the Planck polarization angle, and the JCMT observation results are unaffected. Therefore, all conclusions drawn in the published article are unchanged even after the above correction is applied. The 1 pc scale magnetic field observed by Planck shows a smooth distribution, and the interstellar magnetic field in molecular clouds increases the complexity significantly on the scale of less than 1 pc.

A turbulent combustion subgrid model, inspired by the Linear Eddy Model for Large Eddy Simulation (LEM-LES), is developed to study highly compressible and reactive flows involving very rapid transients in pressure and energy. The model is intended to be a one-dimensional treatment of a diffusion-reaction system within a multi-dimensional LES cell. The goal is to reduce the expense of solving a complete multi-dimensional problem through Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) while preserving micro-scale hotspots and their physical effects on ignition. The current approach features a Lagrangian description of fluid particles on the subgrid for increased accuracy. Recently, the model approach has been verified for various fundamental 1-D test cases, including inert mixing, constant volume ignition, shock tube problems and laminar flame propagation. In the current study, the model is extended to treat turbulent methane-air flames in one-dimension. Also, a 1-D piston-driven laminar shock–flame interaction and its subsequent transition to detonation is modelled. Results confirm that both laminar and turbulent flame speeds are reproduced when compared against 1D computations of the Navier–Stokes equations (1D-NS) and experiments, respectively. Furthermore, the model offers a good prediction for detonation initiation in the presence of shock waves when compared to high and low-resolution 1D-NS simulations. Finally, the model is demonstrated to reproduce the correct detonation structures, velocities, and instability behaviour when compared to theory and the 1D-NS computations.

The wavefront propagation of curved detonation waves in carbon-oxygen cores and helium shells of type Ia supernova progenitors may be predicted via a Detonation Shock Dynamics (DSD) approach. DSD is used typically in engineering to model explosives. A level set implementation is used to evolve the front, using intrinsic quasi-steady, quasi-one-dimensional detonation speed-curvature relationships. The effects of curvature are analysed for a number of models from the literature which originally use the local planar detonation speed, and compared. The differences can be very profound in the low density regions where detonation models are exploited to produce intermediate mass elements. In detonable low density regions, the detonation wave speed tends to be much lower than the planar DSD analysis predicts, while the subsonic driving zone controlling the dynamics is many order of magnitude shorter than its planar version. However, the lower shock temperatures ensure that the complete reaction lengths are orders of magnitude longer when curvature effects are properly accounted. Furthermore, the material cannot be detonated in sufficiently low density regions due to a curvature induced extinction limit. The implications for and need to reassess the nucleosynthesis, intermediate mass element production and even the progenitors of SN Ia detonation models, is discussed. In the second part of this thesis, an adapted method for evolving the front when the speed function has a curvature component is introduced. A stationary boundary value problem is adapted by considering the non-stationary form. This method is similar in its implementation to the level set form but is more efficient. Its efficiency and error is investigated and compared to the level set method.

We present numerical simulations of the adiabatic interaction of a shock with a clumpy region containing many individual clouds. Our work incorporates a sub-grid turbulence model which for the first time makes this investigation feasible. We vary the Mach number of the shock, the density contrast of the clouds and the ratio of total cloud mass to intercloud mass within the clumpy region. Cloud material becomes incorporated into the flow. This ‘mass loading’ reduces the Mach number of the shock and leads to the formation of a dense shell. In cases in which the mass loading is sufficient the flow slows enough that the shock degenerates into a wave. The interaction evolves through up to four stages: initially the shock decelerates; then its speed is nearly constant; next the shock accelerates as it leaves the clumpy region; finally, it moves at a constant speed close to its initial speed. Turbulence is generated in the post-shock flow as the shock sweeps through the clumpy region. Clouds exposed to turbulence can be destroyed more rapidly than a similar cloud in an ‘isolated’ environment. The lifetime of a downstream cloud decreases with increasing cloud-to-intercloud mass ratio. We briefly discuss the significance of these results for starburst superwinds and galaxy evolution.

Detonations in non-ideal explosives tend to propagate significantly below the nominal one-dimensional detonation speed. In these cases, multi-dimensional effects within the reaction zone are important. A streamline-based approach to steady-state non-ideal detonation theory is developed. It is shown in this study that, given the streamline shapes, the two-dimensional problem reduces to an ordinary differential equation eigenvalue problem along each streamline, the solution of which determines the local shock shape that, in turn, leads to the solution of the detonation speed as a function of charge diameter. A simple approximation of straight but diverging streamlines is considered. The results of the approximate theory are compared with those of high-resolution direct numerical simulations of the problem. It is shown that the straight streamline approximation is remarkably predictive of highly non-ideal explosive diameter effects. It is even predictive of failure diameters. Given this predictive capability, one potential use of the method is in the determination of rate law parameters by fitting to data from unconfined rate stick experiments. This is illustrated by using data for ammonium nitrate fuel oil explosives.

The interaction of an astrophysical shock with a cloud typically occurs at high Reynolds number, and in such cases will be highly turbulent. However, the formation of fully developed turbulence is usually prevented by the artificial viscosity inherent in hydrodynamical simulations. Upstream structures mean that the flow behind the shock is also likely to be turbulent, as it sweeps over such inhomogeneities. We study the nature of adiabatic shock-cloud interactions using a subgrid compressible k–e turbulence model.

We present the first results of a large suite of convergence tests between Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) Finite Difference Hydrodynamics and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of the non-linear thin shell instability and the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. We find that the two methods converge in the limit of high resolution and accuracy. AMR and SPH simulations of the non-linear thin shell instability converge with each other with standard algorithms and parameters. The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in SPH requires both an artificial conductivity term and a kernel with larger compact support and more neighbours (e.g. the quintic kernel) in order converge with AMR. For purely hydrodynamical problems, SPH simulations take an order of magnitude longer than the grid code when converged.

We numerically reproduce the density profiles for filaments that are in magnetohydrostatic and pressure equilibrium with their surroundings obtained in Tomisaka (2014) and show that these equilibria are dynamically stable. If the effect of ambipolar diffusion is considered, these filaments lose magnetic support initiating cloud collapse. The filaments do not lose magnetic flux. Rather the magnetic flux is redistributed within the filament from the centre towards the envelope. The rate of the collapse is inversely proportional to the fractional ionisation and two gravitationally-driven ambipolar diffusion regimes for the collapse are observed as predicted in Mouschovias & Morton (1991). For high values of the ionisation coefficient, that is $X \geq 10^{-7}$, the gas is strongly coupled to the magnetic field and the Jeans length is larger than the ambipolar diffusion length scale. Then the collapse is governed by magnetically-regulated ambipolar diffusion. For $X \lesssim 10^{-8}$, the gas is weakly coupled to the magnetic field and the magnetic support is removed by gravitationally-dominated ambipolar diffusion. Here, neutrals and ions only collide sporadically, that is the ambipolar diffusion length scale is larger than the Jeans length. When decaying turbulence is included, additional support is provided to the filament. This slows down the collapse of the filament even in the absence of a magnetic field. When a magnetic field is present, the collapse rate increases by a ratio smaller than for the non-magnetic case. This is because of a speed-up of the ambipolar diffusion due to larger magnetic field gradients generated by the turbulence and because the ambipolar diffusion aids the dissipation of turbulence below the ambipolar diffusion length scale. To understand the formation of a magnetically dominated molecular cloud out of an atomic cloud, we follow the dynamical evolution of the cloud with a time-dependent axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic code. A thermally stable warm atomic cloud is initially in static equilibrium with the surrounding hot ionised gas. A shock propagating through the hot medium interacts with the cloud. As a fast-mode shock propagates through the cloud, the gas behind it becomes thermally unstable. The $\beta$ value of the gas also becomes much smaller than the initial value of order unity. These conditions are ideal for magnetohydrodynamic waves to produce high-density clumps embedded in a rarefied warm medium. A slow-mode shock follows the fast-mode shock. Behind this shock a dense shell forms, which subsequently fragments. This is a primary region for the formation of massive stars. We have performed 2D hydromagnetic simulations with an adaptive mesh refinement code to examine the response of a pre-existing initially spherical dense core to a non-linear fast-mode wave. One key parameter is the ratio of the wavelength to the initial core radius. If that ratio is large and the wave amplitude is sufficient, significant compression of the core occurs, as envisaged by Myers & Lazarian (1998) in their "turbulent cooling flow" picture. For smaller values of that ratio, an initial value of the ratio of the thermal pressure to magnetic pressure of 0.2, and sufficiently large wave amplitude, the scattering induces the production of dense substructure in the core. This substructure may be related to that detected in the dense core associated with the cyanopolyyne peak in TMC-1. Aims. We extend the study of two-fluid models of cosmic-ray modified radiative shocks by including energy transfer from the cosmic rays to the thermal gas due to a cosmic-ray driven acoustic instability. Methods. We perform hydrodynamic simulations to find solutions to the time-dependent, one-dimensional two-fluid equations governing the thermal fluid and cosmic-ray fluid. Source terms transferring energy between the two fluids are included. Results. The magnitudes of the source terms determine the degree to which the cosmic rays modify the radiative shock. We found a range of steady solutions characterised by moderate cosmic-ray acceleration and a compression ratio significantly greater than 7, which is the limit for cosmic-ray dominated shocks. The post-shock temperature and overall compression increase as the source term in the thermal fluid's energy equation increases. For sufficiently strong coupling, the solutions are thermally overstable.

We have examined a stream-source model for the production of the cometary tails observed in the Helix Nebula NGC 7293 in which a transonic or moderately supersonic stream of ionized gas overruns a source of ionized gas. Hydrodynamic calculations reveal velocity structures which are in good agreement with the observational data on tail velocities and are consistent with observations of the nebular structure. The results also are indicative of a stellar atmosphere origin for the cometary globules. Tail remnants persist for timescales long enough for their identification with faint striations visible in the nebula gas to be plausible., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Aims. We demonstrate that cosmic rays suppress the thermal overstability of radiative shocks for a wide range of upstream parameters and initial conditions. Methods. We perform one-dimensional time-dependent two-fluid simulations, introducing cosmic rays into overstable radiative shocks. Results. When a cosmic ray fluid is introduced, the oscillations of the shock front are damped and a smooth cosmic ray modified shock develops and propagates away from the cold dense layer. A large increase in cosmic ray pressure occurs for lower Mach numbers in radiative cosmic ray modified shocks than in adiabatic cosmic ray modified shocks. The compression ratio is limited to 7 and steady solutions do not exhibit a cold dense layer like those in radiative shocks that are not modified by cosmic rays. If the diffusion length is much larger than the cooling length, the shock is nearly isothermal. The structure of such shocks obtained with the two-fluid code agree well with analytically derived solutions for strictly isothermal flow containing cosmic rays.

Two-dimensional compressible Reactive Navier–Stokes numerical simulations of intrinsic planar, premixed flame instabilities are performed. The initial growth of a sinusoidally perturbed planar flame is first compared with the predictions of a recent exact linear stability analysis, and it is shown the analysis provides a necessary but not sufficient test problem for validating numerical schemes intended for flame simulations. The long-time nonlinear evolution up to the final nonlinear stationary cellular flame is then examined for numerical domains of increasing width. It is shown that for routinely computationally affordable domain widths, the evolution and final state is, in general, entirely dependent on the width of the domain and choice of numerical boundary conditions. It is also shown that the linear analysis has no relevance to the final nonlinear cell size. We have calculated the evolution of spherical accretion flows undergoing mass-loading from embedded clouds through either conduction or hydrodynamical ablation. We have observed the effect of varying the ratios of the mass-loading timescale and the cooling timescale to the ballistic crossing timescale through the mass-loading region.\ud \ud We have also varied the ratio of the potential energy of a particle injected into the flow near the outer region of mass-loading to the temperature at which a minimum occurs in the cooling curve. The two types of mass-loading produce qualitatively different types of behaviour in the accretion flow, since mass-loading through conduction requires the ambient gas to be hot, whereas mass ablation from clumps occurs throughout the flow. Higher ratios of injected to accreted mass typically occur with hydrodynamical ablation, in agreement with previous work on wind-blown bubbles and supernova remnants. We find that mass-loading damps the radiative overstability of such flows, in agreement with our earlier work. If the mass-loading is high enough it can stabilize the accretion shock at a constant radius, yielding an almost isothermal subsonic post-shock flow. Such solutions may be relevant to cooling flows onto massive galaxies. Mass-loading can also lead to the formation of isolated shells of high temperature material, separated by gas at cooler temperatures.

Simple general arguments suggest that, like round jets, initially divergent hypersonic slab jets propagating through a uniform atmosphere are eventually recollimated by the high pressure of their cocoons and the subsequent evolution is approximately self-similar. Although slab jets are not directly relevant to astrophysical jets, they allow us to study the effects of enforced symmetry without resorting to expensive three-dimensional numerical simulations. In this paper we show that, although both jets with enforced mirror symmetry and those without eventually become self-similar, the flow depends significantly on the symmetry. In particular, the aspect ratio of the cocoon created by asymmetric jets seems to be independent of the initial jet opening angle for small opening angles, contrary to what is found for symmetric jets. This suggests that the hydrodynamics of the jet and its cocoon is much more complicated than has been assumed in current theoretical models of extragalactic radio sources and that results of two-dimensional axisymmetric numerical simulations can be rather misleading.

A numerical simulation of the interaction of a hypersonic wind with a mass source shows that, downstream of the source, the injected material occupies a cone with a sizable opening angle. In contrast, the injected material is confined to a long, thin tail when the wind is transonic.

The regulation of galactic-scale star formation rates (SFRs) is a basic problem for theories of galaxy formation and evolution: which processes are responsible for making observed star formation rates so inefficient compared to maximal rates of gas content divided by dynamical timescale? Here we study the effect of magnetic fields of different strengths on the evolution of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) within a kiloparsec patch of a disk galaxy and resolving scales down to $\simeq0.5\:{\rm{pc}}$. Including an empirically motivated prescription for star formation from dense gas ($n_{\rm{H}}>10^5\:{\rm{cm}^{-3}}$) at an efficiency of 2\% per local free-fall time, we derive the amount of suppression of star formation by magnetic fields compared to the nonmagnetized case. We find GMC fragmentation, dense clump formation and SFR can be significantly affected by the inclusion of magnetic fields, especially in our strongest investigated $B$-field case of $80\:{\rm��}$G. However, our chosen kpc-scale region, extracted from a global galaxy simulation, happens to contain a starbursting cloud complex that is only modestly affected by these magnetic fields and likely requires internal star formation feedback to regulate its SFR., 7 pages, 5 figures. We present 2D adiabatic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of a shock interacting with groups of two or three cylindrical clouds. We study how the presence of a nearby cloud influences the dynamics of this interaction, and explore the resulting differences and similarities in the evolution of each cloud. The understanding gained from this small-scale study will help to interpret the behaviour of systems with many 10's or 100's of clouds. We observe a wide variety of behaviour in the interactions studied, which is dependent on the initial positions of the clouds and the orientation and strength of the magnetic field. We find: i) some clouds are stretched along their field-lines, whereas others are confined by their field-lines; ii) upstream clouds may accelerate past downstream clouds (though magnetic tension can prevent this); iii) clouds may also change their relative positions transverse to the direction of shock propagation as they "slingshot" past each other; iv) downstream clouds may be offered some protection from the oncoming flow as a result of being in the lee of an upstream cloud; v) the cycle of cloud compression and re-expansion is generally weaker when there are nearby neighbouring clouds; vi) the plasma $\beta$ in cloud material can vary rapidly as clouds collide with one another, but low values of $\beta$ are always transitory. The paper considers the derivation and properties of the Fanno model for nearly unidirectional turbulent flow of gas in a tube. The model is relevant to many industrial processes. Approximate solutions are derived and numerically validated for evolving flows of initially small amplitude, and these solutions reveal the prevalence of localized large-time behaviour, which is in contrast to inviscid acoustic theory. The properties of large-amplitude travelling waves are summarized, which are also surprising when compared to those of inviscid theory.

We study the evolution of a globule of neutral material immersed in the more tenuous hotter plasma of an H II region surrounding newly born OB stars. The neutral globule is illuminated by the direct ionizing radiation of OB stars, and by diffuse radiation emitted by recombination in the surrounding ionized gas. We perform 2D, time dependent axisymmetric hydrodynamic simulations, and find that, for values of the diffuse field of the order of 10% of the direct field, the evolution of the globule is completely different to its evolution when the diffuse field is neglected.

In recent years, numerical solutions of the equations of compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows have been found to contain intermediate shocks for certain kinds of problems. Since these results would seem to be in conflict with the classical theory of MHD shocks, they have stimulated attempts to reexamine various aspects of this theory, in particular the role of dissipation. In this paper, we study the general relationship between the evolutionary conditions for discontinuous solutions of the dissipation-free system and the existence and uniqueness of steady dissipative shock structures for systems of quasilinear conservation laws with a concave entropy function. Our results confirm the classical theory. We also show that the appearance of intermediate shocks in numerical simulations can be understood in terms of the properties of the equations of planar MHD, for which some of these shocks turn out to be evolutionary. Finally, we discuss ways in which numerical schemes can be modified in order to avoid the appearance of intermediate shocks in simulations with such symmetry.

Very-long-time numerical simulations of an idealized pulsating detonation with one irreversible reaction having an Arrhenius form are performed using a hierarchical adaptive second-order Godunov-type scheme. The initial data are given by the steady solution and the truncation error produces the perturbation to trigger the instability. The detonation is allowed to run for thousands of half-reaction times of the underlying steady wave to ensure that the final amplitudes and periods of the nonlinear oscillations are achieved. Thorough resolution studies are performed for various representative regimes of the instability. It is shown that to obtain quantitatively good solutions over 50 numerical grid points in the half-reaction length of the steady detonation are required, while to obtain a converged solution over 100 points are required, even near the stability boundary. In this paper we perform high-resolution one-dimensional time-dependent numerical simulations of detonations for which the underlying steady planar waves are of the pathological type. Pathological detonations are possible when there are endothermic or dissipative effects in the system. We consider a system with two consecutive irreversible reactions A→B→C, with an Arrhenius form of the reaction rates and the second reaction endothermic. The self-sustaining steady planar detonation then travels at the minimum speed, which is faster than the Chapman–Jouguet speed, and has an internal frozen sonic point at which the thermicity vanishes. The flow downstream of this sonic point is supersonic if the detonation is unsupported or subsonic if the detonation is supported, the two cases having very different detonation wave structures. We compare and contrast the long-time nonlinear behaviour of the unsupported and supported pathological detonations. We show that the stability of the supported and unsupported steady waves can be quite different, even near the stability boundary. Indeed, the unsupported detonation can easily fail while the supported wave propagates as a pulsating detonation. We also consider overdriven detonations for the system. We show that, in agreement with a linear stability analysis, the stability of the steady wave is very sensitive to the degree of overdrive near the pathological detonation speed, and that increasing the overdrive can destabilize the wave, in contrast to systems where the self-sustaining wave is the Chapman–Jouguet detonation.

Computational fluid dynamics, indeed all computation, is easy enough when there are no large or small parameters in the problem, but this is unfortunately rarely the case in astrophysics. Although much can be achieved by the intelligent use of dimensional analysis in order to rescale the problem, this is seldom enough to carry out interesting computations on a uniform grid and there is little prospect that increases in computer power can do much to alleviate this in the near future. It is, however, possible to construct hydrodynamic codes that use a hierarchical grid to achieve high resolution in places where the solution varies rapidly and this, combined with rescaling, enormously extends the range of problems that can be tackled. The power of these methods is illustrated by the applying them to the propagation of detonations in Type Ia supernovae.

In this paper we use a second–order Godunov scheme to perform one–dimensional time–dependent numerical simulations of an idealized Chapman–Jouguet detonation having an Arrhenius form of reaction rate. The evolution of the longitudinal instability is explored for varying activation temperatures and compared to predictions of a linear stability analysis of the steady detonation. We show that, for large enough activation temperature, the detonation propagates in a series of failures followed by reignition, which can lead to the formation of many large pockets of partly burnt fuel. These results are in disagreement with the previous results of He and Lee, although we find that we can reproduce their results when too coarse a numerical grid is used.
