Abstract

The acoustic detection method is a promising option for future neutrino telescopes operating in the ultra-high energy regime. It utilises the effect that a cascade evolving from a neutrino interaction generates a sound wave, and is applicable in different target materials like water, ice and salt. Described here are the developments in and the plans for the research on acoustic particle detection in water performed by the ANTARES group at the University of Erlangen within the framework of the ANTARES experiment in the Mediterranean Sea. Abstract

The ANTARES Neutrino Telescope is a water Cherenkov detector currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea. It is also designed to serve as a platform for investigations of the deep-sea environment. In this context, the ANTARES group at the University of Erlangen will integrate acoustic sensors within the infrastructure of the experiment. With this dedicated setup, tests of acoustic particle detection methods and deep-sea acoustic background studies shall be performed. The aim of this project is to evaluate the feasibility of a future acoustic neutrino telescope in the deep sea operating in the ultra-high energy regime. Abstract

The ANTARES group at the University of Erlangen is working towards the integration of a set of acoustic sensors into the ANTARES Neutrino Telescope. With this setup, tests of acoustic particle detection methods and background studies shall be performed. The ANTARES Neutrino Telescope, which is currently being constructed in the Mediterranean Sea, will be equipped with the infrastructure to accommodate a 3-dimensional array of photomultipliers for the detection of Cherenkov light. Within this infrastructure, the required resources for acoustic sensors are available: Bandwidth for the transmission of the acoustic data to the shore, electrical power for the off-shore electronics and physical space to install the acoustic sensors and to route the connecting cables (transmitting signals and power) into the electronics containers. Calibration sources are an indispensable tool for all detectors. In acoustic particle detection the goal of a calibration source is to mimic neutrino signatures as expected from hadronic cascades. Abstract

Experiments were performed at a proton accelerator and an infrared laser acility to investigate the sound generation caused by the energy deposition of pulsed particle and laser beams in water. The beams with an energy range of 1 PeV to 400 PeV per proton beam spill and up to 10 EeV for the laser pulse were dumped into a water volume and the resulting acoustic signals were recorded with pressure sensitive sensors. Measurements were performed at varying pulse energies, sensor positions, beam diameters and temperatures. The data is well described by simulations based on the thermo-acoustic model. This implies that the primary mechanism for sound generation by the energy deposition of particles propagating in water is the local heating of the media giving rise to an expansion or contraction of the medium resulting in a pressure pulse with bipolar shape. Abstract

Este ensayo analiza en qué medida el proceso de centralización colombiano de 1886 a 1930 cumplió los criterios de Max Weber para la construcción de Estado: el monopolio legítimo de la fuerza, la consolidación territorial y la construcción de un orden burocrático racional. En la primera parte del periodo hubo varias guerras civiles y una pugnacidad religiosa y política que solo cesó después de la Guerra de los Mil Días; la economía se estancó y tuvo pocos vínculos con el mercado global. Entre 1905 y 1930 unos gobiernos más tolerantes se empeñaron en el desarrollo económico del país y este se aceleró. No obstante, el balance es pobre: el monopolio de la fuerza fue tardío y muy incompleto, el Estado se mantuvo endeble por la baja tributación y continuó el orden político oligárquico. El desarrollo burocrático fue incompleto, aunque se extendió en las áreas de política económica del gobierno central. Las ciudades prosperaron y se volvieron polos de poder con los que el centro político tuvo que negociar.

Die Arbeit widmet sich der Fragestellung, inwieweit die Southern African Development Community (SADC) und Südafrika sowie die Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) und Nigeria einen Beitrag zum Frieden in regionalen Konflikten leisten. Die Analyse zeigt, dass subregionale Organisationen auf dem Kontinent an Bedeutung gewonnen haben. Insbesondere ECOWAS fungiert für Afrika inzwischen als ein Modell einer eigenständig praktizierten Konfliktregulierung. Trotz dieser positiven Erfahrungen tragen die subregionalen Akteure allerdings nicht ausreichend zum Frieden bei. Zum einen fehlt der politische Wille, auch in der Sicherheitspolitik Kompetenzen an überstaatliche Instanzen abzugeben. Zum anderen fehlen Ressourcen. Daher definiert sich Kooperation in strukturschwachen Regionen stark über Schlüsselstaaten wie Nigeria und Südafrika, die meist größere Truppenkontingente zur Verfügung stellen. Zugleich löst ihre Dominanz intra-regionale Spannungen aus und behindert Kooperation. This book examines to what degree the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and South Africa as well as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Nigeria contribute to peace in regional conflicts. The analysis shows that sub-regional organisations play an important role on the continent. Particularly, ECOWAS seems to be a model for an Africa-based conflict-resolution. Nevertheless, neither organisation restores or keeps peace successfully. On the one hand, their members lack political will to hand over competences to supra-national bodies. On the other hand, resource constraints hinder the implementation of an effective peacekeeping. This is the reason why cooperation between states in economically and politically weak regions depends on key states like Nigeria or South Africa. They provide the interventions with significant contingents of troops. However, these states often act in a dominant way that causes intra-regional tensions and weakens cooperation.

Abstract

The ANTARES Neutrino Telescope was completed in May 2008 and is the first operational Neutrino Telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. The main purpose of the detector is to perform neutrino astronomy and the apparatus also offers facilities for marine and Earth sciences. This paper describes the design, the construction and the installation of the telescope in the deep sea, offshore from Toulon in France. An illustration of the detector performance is given. Abstract

full-scale mechanical prototype line was deployed to a depth of 2500 m to test the leak tightness of the electronics containers and the pressure-resistant properties of an electromechanical cable under evaluation for use in the ANTARES deep-sea neutrino telescope. During a month-long immersion study, line parameter data were taken using miniature autonomous data loggers and shore-based optical time domain reflectometry. Details of the mechanical prototype line, the electromechanical cable and data acquisition are presented. Data taken during the immersion study revealed deficiencies in the pressure resistance of the electromechanical cable terminations at the entry points to the electronics containers. The improvements to the termination, which have been integrated into subsequent detection lines, are discussed. The line also allowed deep-sea acoustic measurements with a prototype hydrophone system. The technical setup of this system is described, and the first results of the data analysis are presented. Abstract

The ANTARES neutrino telescope is being constructed in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of a large three-dimensional array of photo-multiplier tubes. The data acquisition system of the detector takes care of the digitisation of the photo-multiplier tube signals, data transport, data filtering, and data storage. The detector is operated using a control program interfaced with all elements. The design and the implementation of the data acquisition system are described. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

In 2005, the ANTARES Collaboration deployed and operated at a depth of 2500 m a so-called Mini Instrumentation Line equipped with Optical Modules (MILOM) at the ANTARES site. The various data acquired during the continuous operation from April to December 2005 of the MILOM confirm the satisfactory performance of the Optical Modules, their front-end electronics and readout system. as well as the calibration devices of the detector. The in situ measurement of the Optical Module time response yields a resolution better than 0.5 ns. The performance of the acoustic positioning system, which enables the spatial reconstruction of the ANTARES detector with a precision of about 10 cm, is verified. These results demonstrate that with the full ANTARES neutrino telescope the design angular resolution of better than 0.3 degrees can be realistically achieved.

Abstract

The ANTARES neutrino telescope, to be immersed depth in the Mediterranean Sea, will consist of a three-dimensional matrix of 900 large area photomultiplier tubes housed in pressure-resistant glass spheres. The selection of the optimal photomultiplier was a critical step for the project and required an intensive phase of tests and developments carried out in close collaboration with the main manufacturers worldwide. This paper provides an overview of the tests performed by the collaboration and describes in detail the features of the photomultiplier tube chosen for ANTARES. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Hace 20 años Adolfo Meisel publicó un ensayo sobre las condiciones que propiciaron el atraso de la Costa Caribe frente a otras regiones del país. La política proteccionista fue contraproducente en aquellas que tenían alto potencial para exportar materias primas, pues indujo una revaluación del peso; mientras que el contrabando competía contra la protegida industria barranquillera, sin lesionar a las de Medellín, Cali y Bogotá. La política de apertura benefició algo más a la Costa Caribe, pero suscitó nuevos problemas en el siglo XXI, como la enfermedad holandesa que contribuyó a la desindustrialización de Barranquilla pero no impidió el desarrollo petro-industrial de Cartagena ni el de Valledupar y Santa Marta. La región redujo sus desventajas, pero aún es pobre, con una fuerte desigualdad causada por la ancestral relación entre sus élites y la ciudadanía.
