Cisplatin (CP) is one of the most frequently used chemotherapy agents. The objective of this design was to determine the ameliorative effect of lycopene (LP) and/or N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in rats with hepatic and renal toxicity induced by CP. Rats were divided randomly into 7 groups (7 rats/group): control vehicle group (saline only), the LP group (10 mg/kg, orally), the NAC group (150 mg/kg, orally), the CP group (7.5 mg/kg, IP on day 27), the LP-CP group, the NAC-CP group, and the LP-NAC-CP group. The activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase (APK), and levels of urea, creatinine, and lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol) increased after CP injection in the serum. Moreover, CP decreased levels of protein, albumin, and HDL cholesterol. Meanwhile, malondialdehyde significantly increased with a decrease in reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase in the liver and kidney tissues. CP also induced some pathological lesions and increased the expression of caspase-3 in the liver and kidney tissues. Administration of LP and NAC alone or in combinations ameliorated hepatorenal toxicity and apoptosis induced by CP.

Deltamethrin (DM) is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide commonly used in veterinary and agriculture. However, both animal and human exposure are associated with hepatorenal toxicity. Our experimental goal was to assess the protective effects of Spirulina platensis (SP) against DM-induced hepatorenal injury, growth performance, meat chemical composition, and its residues in meat, liver, and skin of broiler chickens. Sixty 1-day-old Cobb broiler chicks were assigned to 4 experimental groups; each was divided into 3 replicates with five chicks each; the 1st group received basal diet alone (control), 2nd group supplemented with SP 20 g/kg diet, 3rd group supplemented with DM 300 mg/kg diet, and 4th group supplemented with DM and SP diet. All groups have received the treatment for 35 days. DM, decreased body weight, weight gain, and increased feed conversion rate. DM showed a significant increase in ALT, AST, urea, creatinine, and MDA and a significant decrease in SOD, and GSH levels. Also, SP significantly reduced DM levels in meat, skin, and liver with a reduction 63.01, 63.00, and 62.90 %, respectively. The DM intoxicated group showed a significant decrease in protein and a marked increase in fat, cholesterol, and triglycerides when compared to the control group. Histopathological changes were also recorded. Dietary SP improved these parameters. Dietary inclusion of SP can be recommended due to the protective effects on DM-induced toxicity in broiler chickens.

Lumpy skin disease is an infectious disease affecting the bovines and caused by Lumpy skin disease virus (LSD virus; LSDV). It is considered an endemic disease in African continent and was recorded in Egypt since 1988. This study aimed to monitor the cattle health condition along the course of the disease through the estimation of biochemical parameters. Besides, investigations on the incriminated strains of LSD virus circulating during outbreak in summer 2019 were performed. One hundred and eighteen cattle of different ages and sex were examined for LSD in some villages of Menoufia Governorate, Egypt. The clinical signs were recorded, and blood chemical analyses were applied on the infected animals. Conventional PCR was used to identify the LSDV using two conservative genes, fusion and P32 coding genes. The infected animals showed typical symptoms of the LSDV infection. Morbidity rates in cattle were high in males (43%) and in 6–12 months of age (44.4%). The hemogram showed significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the count of red blood cells (RBCs) (6.13 ± 0.51× 106/µl), hemoglobin (Hb) (9.07 ± 0.15 g%), hematocrit (HCT) (17.47 ± 0.48%), mean corpuscular volume (MCV) (41.77 ± 0.79fL), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) (13.53 ± 0.29Pg), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) (30.43 ± 0.53g/dL) in infected animals compared with control. The leukocytes showed significant (P < 0.05) increase in the count of white blood cells (WBCs) (15.13 ± 0.03 x103/μl), lymphocyte (LYM) (7.17 ± 0.12 x103/ μl), monocytes and some eosinophil (MID) (2.93 ± 0.08 x103/ μl), and granulocytes (GRAN) (5.03 ± 0.09 x103/ μl) in infected animals. Serum biochemistry of the infected animals showed significant (P < 0.05) increase in all biochemical parameters except serum albumin (2.61 ± 0.35g/dL). Lumpy skin disease virus was detected by Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for both genes and the sequences of the fusion and P32 proteins were deposited in the GenBank by the accession numbers MN699855 and MN699856, respectively. Thus, attention should be directed to the circulating LSDV strain in the field and comparing it with the previously isolated strains. Field practitioners should depend on the blood parameters of the infected animals to select the appropriate remedies.

Background The adverse effect of aflatoxin in broilers well known. However, dietary supplementation of nanocurcumin and/or Saccharomyces cell wall may decrease the bad effect of aflatoxin B1 because of their bio-adsorbing feature of the functional ingredients in Yeast Cell Wall and the detoxification effect of curcumin nanoparticles. The goal of this study was to see how nanocurcumin and/or Saccharomyces cell wall supplementation and/or aflatoxin affected broiler development, blood and serum parameters, carcass trait, histology, immune histochemistry, liver gene expression, and aflatoxin residue in the liver and muscle tissue of broilers. Broiler chicks with one day old were distributed into five groups according to nanocurcumin and/or saccharomyces cell wall with aflatoxin supplementation. The G1 group was given a formulated diet without any supplements. The G2 group was supplemented with aflatoxin (0.25 mg/kg diet) in the formulated diet. The G3 group was supplemented with aflatoxin (0.25 mg/kg diet) and Saccharomyces cell wall (1Kg/Ton diet) in the formulated diet. The G4 group was supplemented with aflatoxin (0.25 mg/kg diet) and nanocurcumin (400 mg/kg) in the formulated diet. The G5 group was supplemented with aflatoxin (0.25 mg/kg diet) and Saccharomyces cell wall (1Kg/Ton diet) with nanocurcumin (200 mg/kg) in the formulated diet. Results Aflatoxin supplementation had a detrimental impact on the growth performance, blood and serum parameters, carcass trait, and aflatoxin residue in the liver and muscle tissue of broilers, according to the results of this study. In addition, aflatoxin supplementation led to a liver injury that was indicated by serum biochemistry and pathological lesions in the liver tissue. Moreover, the intestinal villi, length, and width were affected. The expression of some genes in the liver tissue was affected. Conclusion Saccharomyces cell wall alone or with nanocurcumin attenuated these negative effects and anomalies, and improving all of the above-mentioned metrics.

The aim of this work was to study the effect of milk supplementation with lactoferrin on the rheological and sensory properties of yogurt and to evaluate the efficiency of lactoferrin-fortified yogurt in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia (IDA), microcytic hypochromic anemia, in children. For this purpose, yogurt was manufactured from milk fortified with commercial lactoferrin and the yogurt sensory characteristics, pH and concentration of lactic acid of supplemented yogurts, were determined throughout the shelf-life period storage (7 days) at 4°C and compared with a control yogurt. Furthermore, the use of lactoferrin-fortified yogurt in treatment of IDA in comparison to commercial lactoferrin alone (lactoferrin dissolved in water) were assessed with 20 children (2–5 years old) suffering from IDA. Children were divided into two groups (A and B), 10 children each. Group A received lactoferrin-fortified yogurt while, group B received commercial lactoferrin dissolved in water. The blood cells indices, Hb, HCT, MCV, TLC, Platelets, Serum iron, Serum ferritin, TIBC and Transferrin were analyzed before and after treatment for each group. The results showed that manufactured fortified yogurt was firm, with acceptable sensory properties and the Hb and red blood cell indices significantly improved in patients received lactoferrin-fortified yogurt even than patients received lactoferrin only. This study concluded that lactoferrin addition had no significant effect on yogurt manufacture and the yogurt produced from milk fortified with lactoferrin had a vital supportive treatment for the management of IDA in children.

Background Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the mammalian connective tissue and represents approximately 30% of animal protein. The current study evaluated the potential capacity of collagen extract derived from Nile tilapia skin in improving the cutaneous wound healing in rats and investigated the underlying possible mechanisms. A rat model was used, and the experimental design included a control group (CG) and the tilapia collagen treated group (TCG). Full-thickness wounds were conducted on the back of all the rats under general anesthesia, then the tilapia collagen extract was applied topically on the wound area of TCG. Wound areas of the two experimental groups were measured on days 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 post-wounding. The stages of the wound granulation tissues were detected by histopathologic examination and the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and transforming growth factor (TGF-ß1) were investigated using immunohistochemistry. Moreover, relative gene expression analysis of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-ß1), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) were quantified by real-time qPCR. Results The histopathological assessment showed noticeable signs of skin healing in TCG compared to CG. Immunohistochemistry results revealed remarkable enhancement in the expression levels of VEGF and TGF-β1 in TCG. Furthermore, TCG exhibited marked upregulation in the VEGF, bFGF, and α-SMA genes expression. These findings suggested that the topical application of Nile tilapia collagen extract can promote the cutaneous wound healing process in rats, which could be attributed to its stimulating effect on recruiting and activating macrophages to produce chemotactic growth factors, fibroblast proliferation, and angiogenesis. Conclusions The collagen extract could, therefore, be a potential biomaterial for cutaneous wound healing therapeutics.

The present investigation aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary chitosan supplementation on growth performance, body composition, immune response and histopathology of Nile tilapia, and also the in vitro antibacterial activity of chitosan against Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae). About 180 fish (average body weight 39.3 ± 0.3 g) were randomly divided into three groups according to chitosan supplementation: control group (basal diet without chitosan), Ch3 group (3 g chitosan/kg diet) and Ch5 group (5 g chitosan/kg diet). CPF (chlorpyrifos) is an organophosphate pesticide used in agricultural and veterinary applications. Our experiment aimed to explore the effects of thymoquinone (TQ) and/or lycopene (LP) against CPF-induced neurotoxicity. Wistar rats were categorized into seven groups: first group served as a control (corn oil only), second group, TQ (10 mg/kg), third group, LP (10 mg/kg), fourth group, CPF (10 mg/kg) and deemed as CPF toxic control, fifth group, TQ + CPF, sixth group, (LP + CPF), and seventh group, (TQ + LP + CPF). CPF intoxication inhibited acetylcholinesterase (AchE), decreased glutathione (GSH) content, and increased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), an oxidative stress biomarker. Furthermore, CPF impaired the activity of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) along with enhancement of the level of inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1β. CPF evoked apoptosis in brain tissue. TQ or LP treatment of CPF-intoxicated rats greatly improved AchE activity, oxidative state, inflammatory responses, and cell death. Co-administration of TQ and LP showed better restoration than their sole treatment. In conclusion, TQ or LP supplementation may alleviate CPF-induced neuronal injury, most likely due to TQ or LPs’ antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects.

Background Broilers are continuously stressed because of the rapid growth rate and the environmental issues associated with industrialized poultry production systems, which lead to higher susceptibility for infection with pathogens. It is well known that vitamin E (Vit. E) and selenium (Se) supplementation have protective functions in such stressful conditions. This protocol was to investigate the impact of Vit. E and/or Se on the production performance, some serum biochemistry, and expression of some growth-related gene in the liver tissue of the broilers. The day-old chicks were allotted into four groups according to the supplement; Control group and groups supplemented with Vit. E and/or Se into Vit. E group (100 mg Vit. E/kg diet), Se group (0.3 mg sodium selenite/kg diet), and Vit E + Se group that supplemented with both Vit. E and Se. Results The data of the present experiment showed that dietary inclusion of Vit. E and/or Se significantly (P ≤ 0.05) improved the production parameters without any side effect on the general health status of the broilers, which indicated by normal serum biochemical parameters. Moreover, the treatments positively affected the expression of some genes related to growth performance including growth hormone receptor (GHR) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) in the liver tissue of broilers. Conclusion Dietary supplementation of Vit. E and/or Se improved the production parameters and upregulate the growth-related genes without effect on the general health status of the broilers.

This research was conducted to evaluate the impact of dietary or drinking water Ruminococcus sp. supplementation and/or heat stress (HS) on the growth, serum biochemistry, tissue antioxidant, phagocytic assay, histopathology, and bursa gene expression of broilers. Day-old broiler chicks were allotted into six groups according to HS and/or Ruminococcus with or without enzyme supplementation. The first group was the control one, with a formulated diet and normal environmental temperature but without any supplement. The second group fed on Ruminococcus-supplemented diet (1 kg/kg diet). The third group fed on a formulated diet without supplement, and Ruminococcus and digestive enzymes were given in drinking water (0.1 ml/L). The fourth one was the heat stress group, with a normal formulated diet. The fifth and the sixth groups served as second and third groups, respectively, but with heat stress. The results of this experiment indicated that thermal temperature negatively affected the parameters of growth performance, serum biochemical, tissue antioxidants, and phagocytic assay. Moreover, heat stress led to pathological lesions in the internal organs and affected the expression of some genes related to heat stress, including proapoptotic genes such as caspase8 and bax, inflammatory genes such as NF-κβ1, and heat shock protein such as HSP 70 in the bursal tissue. These bad effects and abnormalities were mitigated by Ruminococcus alone or with enzyme supplementation, which improved all the above-mentioned parameters.

The present trial was performed to evaluate the effect of dietary incorporation of dried Spirulina, Chlorella and their mixture on the immune status of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) before and after artificial infection with pathogenic bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila). Two hundred and forty fish were divided into four groups: (a) a control group fed on a basal diet only, (b) a second group fed on a diet containing Spirulina 15%, (c) a third group fed on a diet containing Chlorella 15%, and (d) a fourth group fed on a diet containing a mixture of both Spirulina 15% and Chlorella 15%. At the end of the experiment (9 weeks), the four groups were experimentally infected with A. hydrophila for 7 days. Antioxidant enzymes, lysozyme and bactericidal activities and histopathological changes were determined just before the challenge test and 7 days post‐challenge. Significant (p ≤ 0.05) increases in fish body protein% before the challenge test and increases in serum antioxidant enzymes, lysozyme and bactericidal activity in the Chlorella and algal mixture groups before and after the challenge test were observed. Spirulina, Chlorella and their mixture groups significantly decreased serum malondialdehyde compared to the control group before and after the challenge test. Using Spirulina, Chlorella and their mixture mitigated the necrotic and degenerative changes induced by A. hydrophila and revealed well‐developed and multiple melanomacrophage centres. Thus, dietary Spirulina, Chlorella and their mixture inclusion in Nile tilapia fish proved to have a protective effect against A. hydrophila infection.

Marine-derived substances are known for their beneficial influences on aquatic animals&rsquo, performances and are recommended to improve intestinal health, immunity, and anti-oxidative status. The present study investigates the role of chitosan nanoparticles on the intestinal histo-morphometrical features in association with the health and immune response of Grey Mullet (Liza ramada). Chitosan nanoparticles are included in the diets at 0, 0.5, 1, and 2 g/kg and introduced to fish in a successive feeding trial for eight weeks. The final body weight (FBW), weight gain (WG), and specific growth rate (SGR) parameters are significantly increased while feed conversion ratio (FCR) decreases by chitosan nanoparticles compared to the control (p &lt, 0.05). The morphometric analysis of the intestines reveals a significant improvement in villus height, villus width, and the number of goblet cells in chitosan-treated groups in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, there is a positive correlation between the thickness of the enterocyte brush border and the chitosan dose, referring to an increasing absorptive activity. Histologically, the intestinal wall of Grey Mullet consists of four layers, mucosa, sub-mucosa, tunica muscularis (muscular layers), and serosa. The histological examination of the L. ramada intestine shows a normal histo-morphology. The epithelial layer of intestinal mucosa is thrown into elongated finger-like projections, the intestinal villi. The values of hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cells (RBCs), total protein (TP), albumin, and globulin are significantly increased in fish fed 1, and 2 g/kg of chitosan nanoparticles compared to fish fed 0 and 0.5 g/kg (p &lt, 0.05). The highest levels of TP and albumin are observed in fish fed 1 g/kg diet (p &lt, 0.05). The lysozyme activity and phagocytic index are significantly enhanced by feeding chitosan nanoparticles at 0.5, 1, and 2 g/kg, whereas the phagocytic activity is improved in fish fed 1 and 2 g/kg (p &lt, 0.05). The highest lysozyme activity and phagocytic index are observed in fish fed 1 g/kg. SOD is significantly activated by feeding chitosan nanoparticles at 1 g/kg. Simultaneously, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT) activities also are enhanced by feeding chitosan at 1 and 2 g/kg, compared to fish fed 0 and 0.5 g/kg (p &lt, 0.05). The highest GPx and CAT activities are observed in fish fed 1 g/kg (p &lt, 0.05). Conversely, the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels are decreased by feeding chitosan at 1 and 2 g/kg, with the lowest being in fish fed 1 g/kg (p &lt, 0.05). To summarize, the results elucidate that L. ramada fed dietary chitosan nanoparticles have a marked growth rate, immune response, and anti-oxidative response. These improvements are attributed to the potential role of chitosan nanoparticles in enhancing intestinal histo-morphometry and intestinal health. These results soundly support the possibility of using chitosan nanoparticles at 1&ndash, 2 g/kg as a feasible functional supplement for aquatic animals.

Cisplatin (CP) is one of the most active medications in cancer treatment and has some adverse effects such as hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. The present research was planned to determine the protective effects of L-carnitine (LC) against CP-induced hepato-renal oxidative stress in rats, via investigating of some serum biochemical and tissue oxidative/antioxidant parameters, histological alterations, and immunohistochemical expressions of two different intermediate filaments (IFs) proteins; vimentin (VIM) and cytokeratin 18 (CK18). Twenty-eight rats were divided into four groups (7 rats each). Groups I and II were orally administered saline and LC (100 mg/kg body weight), respectively, once daily for 30 consecutive days. Group III received saline orally once daily and a single dose of CP on the 27th day of the experiment [7.5 mg/kg, intraperitoneal (IP)]. Group IV received both LC and CP. Injection of CP significantly (P ≤ 0.05) increased serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities and creatinine and urea levels, while serum total protein, albumin, and globulin concentrations significantly (P ≤ 0.05) decreased. In addition, CP induced a dramatic increase in the Malondialdehyde (MDA) level along with a substantial decrease in reduced glutathione (GSH) and catalase (CAT) in the hepato-renal tissues. Histologically, both liver and kidney of the CP treated group revealed marked degenerative changes. Moreover, overexpression of both VIM and CK18 in hepato-renal tissues were noted after CP injection. On the other hand, the administration of LC in the CP injected group (Group IV) restored the biochemical parameters, histological, and immunohistochemical pictures toward the normalcy. In conclusion, LC may be supplemented for chemotherapy with CP to ameliorate its oxidative stress and restore the normal organization of IFs, especially VIM and CK18 within the CP intoxicated hepato-renal cells.

Varied levels of Saccharomyces cerevisiae-fermented date palm seed meal (DSM) were included in Nile tilapia (26.95 ± 0.01 g) diets. Five diets were prepared to include fermented DSM at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 % and fed for fish for 8 weeks. The obtained results revealed that yeast fermented DSM significantly affected the final body weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, and feed conversion ratio in a dose dependent manner (P = 0.001, P = 0.002, P = 0.004, P = 0.01, respectively). Dietary yeast fermented DSM significantly increased the lipase, amylase, and protease activities (P = 0.011, P = 0.02, P = 0.031, respectively). In the anterior segment of the intestine, villus length and the number of goblet cells were significantly affected by the inclusion of yeast fermented DSM (P = 0.001 and P = 0.008). In the middle area, only the villus length, internal villi distance, and goblet cells number were affected significantly by the inclusion of yeast fermented DSM (P = 0.001, P = 0.02, P = 0.047, respectively). Posterior intestinal morphometry showed significantly increased villus length and number of goblet cells when fish fed yeast fermented DSM in a dose dependent manner (P = 0.028 and P = 0.04). Most of the measured blood parameters showed insignificant (P > 0.05) differences except for total blood protein, globulin, albumin, RBCs, and WBCs which were significantly affected by the inclusion of yeast fermented DSM (P = 0.001, P = 0.001, P = 0.007, P = 0.042, P = 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, dietary yeast fermented DSM significantly altered the lysozyme and phagocytic activities (P = 0.03 and P = 0.005). Based on the polynomial regression analysis the inclusion of yeast fermented DSM at 11.44–17.44 % can be used effectively in tilapia’ diets for improving the growth, digestion activity, and immune response.

This paper was designed to analyze the effect of ochratoxin A (OTA) contaminated feed on the growth outcomes, certain serum biochemical, histopathology, and OTA residue in the dorsal muscle, liver, and kidney in Nile tilapia. Also, to improve the drastic effect of OTA through dietary supplementation of hydrated sodium aluminum silicates nanoparticles or nano copper. For performing the present study, 270 fish were randomly allotted into 6 equal groups according to ochratoxin and nanoparticles of hydrated sodium aluminum silicates or copper oxide. The results indicated that supplementation of two levels of both nanoparticles (aluminum silicate or copper) as a mycotoxin adsorbent could prevent ochratoxicosis in Nile tilapia fish. In addition, they maintained optimal growth performance, feed efficiency without bad effect on serum profiles and vital organs function of fish in a dose-dependent manner. Histopathologically, the most interesting finding was the precipitation of calcium salts known as nephrocalcinosis, within the tubules, upon the degenerative tubules and tunica intima and media of the blood vessels in the control positive group. These pathological lesions were mitigated by nanoparticle supplementation. Thus increase the safety of fish products.

The current study evaluated the effects of dietary mannanoligosaccharide (MOS) on red sea bream (Pagrus major) performances. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of dietary inclusion of fermented poultry by-product meal (FPBM) on growth performance, digestive enzymes activity, innate immunity, and antioxidant capacity in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). A basal diet containing fish meal and soybean meal was considered as a control (Con), and four other diets were produced by inclusion of 10, 20, 30, or 40% FPBM (FPBM10, FPBM20, FPBM30, and FPBM40 diets). The experiment was done in triplicates (20 fish per replicate) and the fish were fed the test diets to visual satiety twice daily for 8 weeks. The groups of fish fed the FPBM10 and FPBM20 diets showed significantly (P < 0.05) higher weight gain and specific growth rate, and lower feed conversion ratio than those fed the Con and FPBM40 diets. Moreover, inclusion of 40% FPBM led to significant reduction of feed intake compared to the other treatments. FPBM at all the tested levels improved intestinal protease activity and lipase activity was enhanced at 10–30% inclusion levels. Furthermore, the FPBM10 and FPBM20 groups revealed significantly higher amylase activity than the other treatments. The FPBM10 group exhibited significantly higher phagocytic activity than the control group and phagocytic index was enhanced by dietary inclusion of 10–30% FPBM. However, inclusion of over 30% FPBM led to significant reduction of lysozyme, phagocytic, and bactericidal activities compared to the control group. Further, FPBM10 and FPBM20 diets increased the serum IgM levels, while NBT was significantly increased by feeding FPBM10 diet compared with FPBM30 and FPBM40 groups (P < 0.05). The group fed the FPBM30 diet showed significantly higher glutathione peroxidase activity than the control group. According to the analysis of the data by the polynomial regression, the inclusion of FPBM at 11.17–25.14% can be applied effectively in the diets of tilapia for better growth performance and health condition.

Background Using probiotics have become popular. They are considered an alternative to Antibiotic Growth Promoters (AGP). Probiotics are supplemented into animal feed for improving growth performance along with preventing and controlling enteric pathogens. The aim of this work was to study the impact of dietary supplementation of Mannan-oligosaccharide and β-Glucan (Agrimos®) on broiler challenged with Escherichia coli O78 (E. coli O78 - marked with an antibiotic (320 μg ciprofloxacin/ml broth) on growth performance, serum biochemistry, immune organs-histopathology, E-coli colonization, and hepatic transcripts of Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and Nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-ϰB). A total of 125 one-day-old chicks were used for conducting the experiment. Five one-day-old chicks were slaughtered for measuring the initial weight of the lymphoid tissue. The remaining chicks (120) were allotted into four groups according to Mannan-oligosaccharide and β-Glucan supplementation, and E. coli infection. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 16. Results Results indicated significant alteration of growth performance, serum biochemistry, and selected liver gene expression with pathological lesions, especially in the lymphoid organs due to E. coli infection. These alterations were mitigated by Mannan-oligosaccharide and β-Glucan supplementation. Conclusion It could be concluded, Mannan-oligosaccharide and β-Glucan supplementation in broiler’s diet improved the immune response of broilers and mitigated pathological lesion resulted from E. coli infection.

The present study aimed to investigate the possible mitigating effect of l-carnitine (LC) and/or α-tocopherol (Vit. E) administration against tilmicosin (TIL)-induced cardiotoxicity in rats. Fifty-six male albino rats were divided into seven groups according to LC, Vit. E, and/or TIL administration. Control, LC, and Vit. E groups were given saline, 150 mg LC/kg body weight (BW)/day and 100 mg Vit. E/kg BW/day, respectively, orally once daily for 15 days. The TIL group was administered saline orally once daily for 15 days and a single dose of TIL (75 mg/kg BW) subcutaneously (SC) on day 14 from the starting of the experimental period (15 days). The TIL-LC, TIL-Vit. E, and TIL-LC-Vit. E groups received 150 mg LC/kg BW/day, 100 mg Vit. E/kg BW/day, and 150 mg LC/kg BW pulse 100 mg Vit. E/kg BW, respectively, orally once daily for 15 days with TIL as described above. The results revealed that the administration of TIL significantly (P ≤ 0.05) raised serum activities of heart injury indicators, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), and CK-MB with substantial increase (P ≤ 0.05) in the cardiac contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and decreased in antioxidants. The pathological changes appeared in the form of necrotic muscle fibers and massive inflammatory cellular infiltrations in the cardiac muscle and increased the caspase-3 immunohistochemical expression in the heart tissues as well. These changes were ameliorated by LC and/or Vit. E administration. In conclusion, supplementation of LC and/or Vit. E ameliorated the cardiotoxicity of the TIL SC injection in the rat.

The present study aimed to investigate the toxic effect of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and the effectiveness of a biological mycotoxin binder (Nutritox®) in detoxifying aflatoxicosis. Ninety one-day-old chicks were chosen and divided into 3 groups. The first group received standard basal diet only, the second group received a basal diet with AFB1 (0.25 mg/kg diet), and the third group received a basal diet with AFB1 (0.25 mg/kg diet) and Nutritox® (1 kg/ton diet). AFB1 feed contamination significantly reduced growth performance and deteriorated FCR. Moreover, it significantly increased serum AST, ALT, and malondialdehyde and significantly decreased serum total protein, albumin, globulin, SOD, CAT activities and glutathione peroxidase gene expression as well. Aflatoxin residues were detected in the liver tissues. Furthermore, the liver and kidney of AFB1 treated group showed pathological changes. The supplementation of Nutritox® significantly reduced aflatoxin levels in the liver and counteracted the negative effects of AFB1.

We studied the impact of using fodder enriched with the cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis or the green alga Chlorella vulgaris or a consortium containing both of them on growth, biochemistry profile and immune status of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fish. A set of 240 males challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila one week before the end of 9 weeks experimental period. The fodder supplemented with 15% (w/w) of Spirulina platensis, 15% of Chlorella vulgaris or 15% of their (1/1) mixture. Growth performance was measured all over 9 weeks. Challenge test was performed by infection with the pathogen after 8 weeks of growth. The serum total contents of protein, albumin, globulin, urea, creatinine and activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were measured at 7 days before and after the infection. The results revealed significant increases in body weight of the Chlorella and their mixture (Chlorella and Spirulina) treated groups compared with the untreated control and the only Spirulina treated ones (p ≤ 0.05). Without infection, the serum total protein and serum globulin significantly increased by supplementation with the Spirulina, Chlorella and both compared to the uninfected control group. The serum albumin significantly decreased with Chlorella and the mixture supplementations. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in the fish serum generally decreased with application of the enriched feed compared with the control. After infection, serum total protein and globulin significantly increased by the feed supplementations compared with the control group while the serum albumin insignificantly increased by supplementation with Chlorella and Spirulina. ALT, AST, ALK, LDH, urea and creatinine in the fish serum decreased with the microalgae additives compared with the control.

This work carried out to analyze the microbiology and physicochemical parameters of water in some Nile Tilapia fish farms in Kafrelsheikh Governorate. Total bacterial and total Coliforms count were analyzed, as well as the presence of E.faecalis, E.coli, and E.coli O157 in both fish and farms water. The level of total bacterial count in water varied between 4.3x104 and 1.3x106 CFU/ml. The (MPN) of total Coliforms ranged between 1100/ml between different sampling sites. E.faecalis was verified in 28% and 38% of fish and water samples respectively E.coli was isolated in 18% and 34% from fish water samples. E.coli O157 verified in 2% of fish samples and does not present in water samples. Sero-grouping of E.coli isolates revealed that E.coli belongs to five serogroups (O6, O27, O125, O126, and O157). Six weeks feeding trial investigated the comparative evaluation of the different copper (Cu) sources (organic or nanoparticles) supplemented at 100 % or 50 % of recommended requirements replacing inorganic form with fresh or oxidized oil on the growth performance, immune response, antioxidant enzymes and hiver histopathology of broiler chickens. Birds were divided into 10 groups including group1(G1) which received the basal diet (BD) contain fresh oil and supplemented with inorganic Cu (15 mg/kg diet ), G2-G3 received Cu as the organic form (15 and 7.5 mg/kg ) and G4-G5 received Cu as Cu nanoparticles (Cu-NPs) with the same level of the organic form respectively, while groups 6-10 have the same design but the diet contain oxidized oil. Inclusion of oxidized oil in diet supplemented with different Cu sources reduced weight, increased Feed intake (FI) and deteriorated FCR when compared with those received fresh oil. Higher level of organic Cu reduced weight, while lower level or both levels of Cu-NPs non-significantly (P> 0.05) increased it. Organic Cu supplementation reduced FI, while nano Cu increased it. 50 % supplementation (7.5mg/kg diet) of requirement as organic Cu significantly (P˂ 0.05) improved average FCR. Supplementation of organic Cu or 50% Cu-NPs improved phagocytosis, lysosomal and bactericidal activity, however higher supplementation level of Cu-NPs reduced them. Inclusion of oxidized oil with different Cu sources had no adverse effect on previously mentioned immune parameters. Organic Cu or Cu-NPs with fresh or oxidized oil non-significantly (P> 0.05) increased serum MDA activity. Organic Cu supplemented birds with fresh or oxidized oil showed reduced GPx and SOD activities, while Cu-NPs increased it. Organic Cu or Cu-NPs decreased E. Coli and lactobacilli count in broiler chick's cecum. Organic or nano-Cu supplementation in oxidized oil containing diet reduced both hepatic vacuolar degeneration and inflammation.

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of low phosphorus diet with or without different levels of phytase enzyme supplementation on growth performance, body composition, nutrient retention efficiency, gene expression, and health status of A. hydrophila challenged fish. A total of 240 monosex males of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) with an average body weight of 23.19 ± 0.15 g/fish were used. Fish were randomly chosen and divided into 4 equal groups (60 fish per group), with 3 subgroups containing 20 fish as a replicate. Group 1, was fed on a diet containing 100% P, group 2, was fed on a diet containing 50% P, group 3 and 4, were fed on low P with 500 or 1000 units of phytase/Kg respectively. It was observed that the 50% phosphorus diet significantly reduced body weight, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and protein efficiency ratio (PER) compared to Nile tilapia fish fed on the diet containing 100% phosphorus. In contrast, fish fed on the diet containing 50% phosphorus supplemented by 500 or 1000 phytase units/kg significantly (P ≤ 0.05) increased final body weight (FBW), total body gain (TBG), average daily gain (ADG), and weight gain compared to Nile tilapia fed on the same diet or fed on the diet containing normal phosphorus without phytase supplementation. Different phosphorus and phytase supplementation levels had no significant effect on serum total protein, albumin, and globulin concentrations, meanwhile, phytase supplementation increased serum calcium and phosphorus levels. Nile tilapia fed on phytase supplementation had an increase in body protein, lipid content, and nutrient utilization efficiency compared to Nile tilapia fed on the diet containing 100% phosphorus. Nile tilapia fed on low dietary phosphorus showed an increase in mortality after infection and a decrease in phagocytosis and neutrophil compared to fish fed on normal phosphorus. Phytase supplementation, made immune response parameters return to its normal values and the pathological lesions of liver, spleen, stomach, and intestine were reduced. Moreover, normal phosphorus significantly up-regulated lipoprotein lipase (LPL) mRNA expression and down-regulated fatty acid synthase (FAS) mRNA in Nile tilapia's liver while low phosphorus with or without phytase supplementation reduced LPL expression and relatively up-regulated FAS.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of phytase, on growth performance, carcass characteristics and some biochemical parameters of Japanese quail fed on low phosphorus diet. Japanese quail were divided into 5 equal groups, each group subdivided into 2 subgroup. One of them contain 16 males while the other contain 16 females. Japanese quail supplemented with five diets in both Males and females. First group (Positive control) fed on diet contain recommended level of available phosphorus N.R.C. (1994), second group (negative control) fed on diet contain 2/3 recommended level of available phosphorus while the other three groups fed on negative control diet supplemented with (300,600 and 900 phytase enzyme unit FTU/Kg), respectively. growth performance results showed that body weight gain of negative control group significantly lowered relative to other groups while Feed conversion ratio of the adequate phosphorus groups or of the low phosphorus groups supplemented with phytasesignificantly better than the negative control groups in both males and females. The data interested in carcass characteristics showed that dressing percentage. breast and thigh muscles were improved in all dietary treatments in both males and females compared with negative control and significantly increased in groups fed on diet supplemented with (600 &900 phytase enzyme unit FTU/Kg when compared with the positive control in case of males However leg muscle increased significantly in case of female (900 phytase enzyme unit FTU/Kg) when compared with the positive control. The present data revealed that serum globulin significantly increased in male group fedlow phosphorus diet supplemented with 900 phytase relative to other male groups, the serum phosphorus of female groupfedlow phosphorus diet supplemented with 900 phytase showed significantly higher relative to other female groups.
