During the 2019 Guild elections in two Ugandan public universities (Makerere and Kyambogo), poetry performances in the form of songs were deployed by some candidates to articulate particular ideological perspectives. This paper examines the poetics and politics of the songs - the aesthetics of the musical performances themselves and their power in mobilising large crowds for the guild vote. I argue that poetry performances in the form of songs do not function merely as election entertainment, but rather that they are central to the contest itself and therefore go a long way to defining its very nature. I also argue that the fact that the 2019 elections at both Makerere and Kyambogo Universities were won by people allied to the People Power movement, whose leader, Hon. Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, provided two songs with which the candidates articulated their message to the electorate, demonstrates the influence of both musicians and popular songs in processes of political mobilisation. Data for this paper was collected using observation, interviews and focus group discussions with selected members of the electorate, and a close reading of the lyrics of the songs. As my analysis reveals, the songs animated the election campaigns to the extent that their performance not only defined the character of the elections, but also, to some extent, contributed to their final outcome. In the second instalment of this testimonial series, Khalid Farraj recounts his experiences as an active member of the uprising in the waning days of the First Intifada, and as a student organizer at Birzeit University during what was arguably the university's most contentious and significant student council elections. In the first instalment, published by the Journal of Palestine Studies in its autumn 2017 issue, Farraj described how the uprising was organized and how it fueled the hopes and dreams of an entire generation of Palestinians. Here, he recalls how the intifada wound down, evoking the new geopolitical context that formed the backdrop to the Oslo peace process; he also provides a granular account of the spring 1994 Birzeit student council elections and anecdotes from daily life that illuminate Oslo's false promises of freedom and self-determination for the Palestinians. This study explores the sourcing, framing and tone of coverage of the 2012 election by university student newspapers in four swing states. The content analysis found these newspapers focus more on human interest and issue coverage than do their professional counterparts and are more neutral in tone as well as more richly sourced. Background. Student electives during the 5th year of the University of Cape Town (UCT) medical curriculum provide a 4-week work experience in the health system. The reflective reports of past students indicate that the electives may significantly shape their developing identities as health professionals and agents of change. Objective. To better understand how 5th-year medical elective students perceive themselves as agents of change to strengthen the elective programme in the Faculty of Health Sciences, UCT. The hypothesis was that the more choice that students are given over their learning, the greater is their sense of agency. Methods. Thirteen 5th-year student volunteers participated in four focus group discussions soon after completing their electives in district, regional or tertiary health facilities in the South African health system. Thematic analysis of the transcripts was performed independently by two of the authors. Results. Key themes were the importance of providing holistic patient-centred care, becoming a competent health professional, working within the health team and advocating for a better health system. The elective experience helped students to be more confident in their abilities and to better understand how to effect change at a clinical and health system level. Conclusion. This study supported the hypothesis that the more choice students have over their learning, the greater is their sense of agency. The electives are appreciated as opportunities to develop clinical skills and competencies and to better understand the role of future doctors within the health team and health system. The value of the UCT elective programme could be enhanced by greater promotion, funding for rural electives, and post-elective peer-topeer feedback sessions. “The freedom of a university to make its own judgments as to education includes the selection of its student body,” stated Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter in 1957. During the 1925 Scopes trial, Columbia Pharmacy Dean Henry H. Rusby asserted that colleges should reject the entrance credentials of students taught the Biblical viewpoint on creation. For the next century, college officials worked to make evolution the fundamental basis for postsecondary—and high school—work in biology. A 2006 challenge to University of California entrance requirements established the university’s right to reject the credentials of applicants from schools using creationist biology textbooks, as Rusby desired. In the film,Please Vote for Me(2007), director Weijun Chen illustrates how leadership ambitions allowed ‘undemocratic’ means of competition during a democratic election among primary school children. Parents encouraged and teachers allowed unscrupulous competition among preselected eight-year-old candidates. The competition led to classmates being manipulated and disappointed and a ‘dictatorship’ similar to that of previous years. This film shows that a ‘democratic election’ in a primary school in Wuhan was guided by native Chinese values of ‘good leadership’ in reformed China. However, the newly introduced discussions on democratic leadership could also be seen as initial steps towards reflection on democracy. This article argues that one possible avenue for addressing and increasing student body diversity in charter schools may lie with the authorizer. In particular, we focus on the role of university-based authorizers, a group of sponsors that would appear to be especially concerned with educational opportunity given their faculties' traditional concern with issues of social justice. Thus, this article examines whether university-based charter school authorizers encourage charter school operators to recruit and enroll a diverse student body, and it discusses the role that authorizers could play in promoting more diverse charter schools. This essay discusses concrete approaches for faculty to use when teaching a student body whose demographics and cultural backgrounds are significantly different from that of the professor. As a white political scientist from the north teaching at a historically black university in the south, this work is particularly concerned with the dynamics of race and gender. However, the lessons from this essay are applicable to all of us who need to construct space in which our students can challenge their own preconceived notions. If the United States and other pluralistic democracies claim that our very strength is found in the sharpening of our individual interpretations against competing ideas to best approximate the truth, how can we replicate this process in our increasingly diverse classrooms? What might this dynamic look like when the professor at the front of the room is radically different in significant ways from the students he or she teaches? For our classroom this means that pluralism must be real. It does not preclude the search for truth and right, but it makes that search more complicated and authentic. We cannot merely construct truth in our own images; we must confront challenging contradictions. In the United States, this requires us to take seriously the competing arguments and frameworks presented by the Other, generally reflecting issues of race, class, religion, politics, sexuality, and gender. This article examines five elements that help ensure that this process of pluralistic discussion and discovery actually occurs in our university and college classrooms. More particularly, the essay examines the potential for classroom engagement in the area of diversity when we consider the factors of audience, grace, power, discomfort, and transformation. This article examines the relevance of South Africa's 2012 School Governing Body (SGB) and Traditional Council (TC) elections and their contribution to democratic consolidation.1 It assesses legal compliance and procedural fairness in these elections on the basis of a review of the literature, official reports, and articles in the media. Theoretical reflection, of course, also informs my argument. In this article, I acknowledge the fact that the government welcomed these elections as an essential part of the post-apartheid transformation of local government and education and that such polls are intended to promote electoral democracy in the country. However, the author's analysis of the procedural fairness and legal compliance issues pertaining to such elections suggest that they might be an afterthought and not treated as "major elections" that are held every five years based on the country's electoral cycle. An electoral cycle is a basic management and planning tool governing each country's elections. This article concludes that these elections deserve to be treated much more seriously than has been the case, and that there is a need to ensure their compliance with electoral legislation and due processes. The purpose of this paper is to provide student affairs professionals with an overview of the law regarding the constitutionality of expenditure limits in student government elections. Unlike campaigns for federal and state office, it is clear that the limited case law on this topic does allow universities to limit the amount of money that student government candidates may spend on their campaigns. However, one of the reasons that universities sometimes set these restrictions is an attempt to create a level playing field for all candidates. This paper notes that this effort may be counter-productive by having the effect of assisting the establishment candidate, and thus urges university administrators to consider this possibility before imposing expenditure limits. The article discusses the implications of the case "Flint v. Dennison" on higher education student election campaigns and other issues relating to First Amendment student speech. It focuses on how university campuses may limit speeches by student-governments without violating the First Amendment and evaluates the application of the limited public forum analysis in public campus organization and individual student speech. Other student-initiated litigation concerning First Amendment in higher education are reviewed in order to examine the possible effects on legal rules and reasoning of the decision on Flint.

THE UNDER-REPRESENTATION OF women in leadership positions is symptomatic of every known society, and this is a matter of concern, at least when considered in the context of the equal opportunities discourse. The present study investigated the influence of gender on access to leadership positions in the Student Representative Council (SRC) among final year student teachers at a college in the Harare province of Zimbabwe. The study established the criteria that student teachers used when electing a fellow student to take up a position of leadership in the SRC, and analysed the explanations the students gave for considering a position as being suitable for male or female students or both sexes. Ninety students (50 male and 40 female) participated in the survey. An open-ended questionnaire was used to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. The results suggest that students have gendered perceptions towards particular SRC positions. Thus, a male student was more likely to be elected to the positions of SRC president or secretary general, while a female student was more likely to be elected to the positions of catering officer or treasurer This appeared to confirm the prevailing view that males tended to control dominant and influential positions in the structures. The study however, concludes that, gender deconstruction is not only desirable, but feasible. It is alleged that the black students more often take the office of student body president at the nation's highest-ranked universities, where they were not even permitted to enroll 45 years ago. Among those that won as student presidents are Inman Page of Brown University in 1877 and Sherrill D. Luke of University of California at Los Angeles in 1949.
