Different 3D printing techniques are globally used, such as Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) and Stereolithography (SLA), but each technique has its pros and cons. Their disadvantages include the high temperatures of FDM and a large pool of material in SLA. This paper describes the work done to develop and design a 3-axis photopolymer extrusion 3D printer. It implied the manufacturing of different structures through the photopolymer extrusion technique. This novel additive manufacturing technique is inspired by two existing 3D printing technologies, FDM and SLA, making it a hybrid printer. It minimizes the disadvantages of the two printing techniques and gives an innovative solution to a broader domain of multi-material and smart materials manufacturing. It uses a printer structure and extrusion system integrated with an FDM printer and the curing system of an SLA printer. The photopolymer is mixed with fumed silica to increase its viscosity and enhance its mechanical properties. The photopolymer mixture with various rations is made to give the optimal characteristics concerning the print speed, mechanical properties, and surface finish, in addition to a reasonable time to cure before flowing out from its place. Two peristaltic pumps were selected as the positive displacement pumps for the extrusion of photopolymer from the storage reservoir to the print head, working simultaneously to make the flow continuous. For the curing part, two UV lasers were mounted on an acrylic sheet and placed with an extrusion head for initial curing. UV lasers were backed with UV LEDs and UV Torch to reduce curing time. The lasers were focused on meeting at a single point where the photopolymer was targeted to solidify. The extrusion nozzle plays a vital role in the placement and finishing of the structure. Optimizing the printing parameters was done to provide dimensionally accurate parts and the fastest print time. The integrated printer printed some simple shapes, and the printer is tuned to give better results in terms of part finishing and strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
