Introduction Methods Consumer and Community Involvement Results Conclusion PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY Paediatric occupational therapists assess and provide intervention for children presenting with sensory processing challenges that impact their daily occupational performance. Interoception, the ability to sense internal body signals, is an emerging practice area, yet it remains unclear how and why paediatric clinicians are applying interoception and related concepts in practice.A scoping review was conducted to report on the current body of published literature related to interoception and its application to paediatric occupational therapy practice. A comprehensive search of 10 electronic databases and related grey literature was conducted. Title and abstract screening were completed prior to full‐text review of evidence. The PRISMA‐ScR Checklist and the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool were used to support a systematic scoping review process and increase robust extraction and appraisal of data. Narrative synthesis was used to analyse and synthesise data.No consumer and community involvement.A total of 18 articles were included in this review, including original research articles (n = 8), published books (n = 4), theses/dissertations (n = 3), opinion pieces (n = 2), and one government document. Narrative synthesis analysis identified six themes: (1) occupational therapy principles relevant to interoception, (2) what is interoception?, (3) assessment of interoception, (4) clinical application of interoception, (5) clinical populations receiving interoception‐based intervention, and (6) relationships between interoception and other performance components. Findings indicated that paediatric occupational therapists are integrating interoception concepts alongside occupational therapy principles to inform assessment and intervention processes. Several assessments and interventions are utilised to support children; however, evidence to strengthen use is lacking. Further, there are limited occupation‐based assessments and intervention programs to address interoception deficits in children.Findings from this scoping review contribute to the emerging body of empirical evidence related to interoception and paediatric occupational therapy practice. These findings provide an informed basis for practice and research by occupational therapists in this area.Interoception allows us to feel what is going on inside our body and helps us to notice how our body might be feeling (e.g. if our stomach grumbles, we might feel hungry; if our heart is beating very fast, we might feel scared; if we are sweating, our body is feeling overheated). Some children may present with problems recognising interoceptive feelings in their bodies. Therefore, occupational therapists can help children learn about their own interoception related to their bodies. This is a new topic for therapists, and they need to know more about it so that they best help children and their families. There is not a lot of information about how to use interoception in occupational therapy practice, and we wanted to know what information already exists about interoception and occupational therapy. This review provides a summary of the current knowledge that is available and summarises it. Introduction: Although stimulation-induced sensations are typically considered undesirable side effects in clinical DBS therapy, there are emerging scenarios, such as computer-brain interface applications, where these sensations may be intentionally created. The selection of stimulation parameters, whether to avoid or induce sensations, is a challenging task due to the vast parameter space involved. This study aims to streamline DBS parameter selection by employing a machine learning model to predict the occurrence and somatic location of paresthesias in response to thalamic DBS. Methods: We used a dataset comprising 3,359 paresthetic sensations collected from 18 thalamic DBS leads from 10 individuals in two clinical centers. For each stimulation, we modeled the Volume of Tissue Activation (VTA). We then used the stimulation parameters and the VTA information to train a machine learning model to predict the occurrence of sensations and their corresponding somatic areas. Results: Our results show fair to substantial agreement with ground truth in predicting the presence and somatic location of DBS-evoked paresthesias, with Kappa values ranging from 0.31 to 0.72. We observed comparable performance in predicting the presence of paresthesias for both seen and unseen cases (Kappa 0.72 vs. 0.60). However, Kappa agreement for predicting specific somatic locations was significantly lower for unseen cases (0.53 vs. 0.31). Conclusion: The results suggest that machine learning can potentially be used to optimize DBS parameter selection, leading to faster and more efficient postoperative management. Psychological vital assessments are required for monitoring health conditions and observing body reactions toward diseases and medications. Wearable sensors play a vital role in sensing body vitals and presenting them as signals for computer-based analysis. The problem relies on the signal decoding due to its input stream that turns out to be discrete/ continuous. Therefore for addressing the above specific issue, this article introduces MV-DUO (Multi-Variate Discrete Unified Optimization) method. This method addresses the above problem from a multi-variate perspective by sensing differential signals across healthy and unhealthy conditions. The healthy and unhealthy conditions are trained using neural learning by augmenting/ ceasing external vital data. The unification is performed using single-point artificial ecosystem-based optimization for identifying discrete sequences collaborated with continuous signals. The single-point reference is grouped based on the maximum continuity fitness observed under various sensing intervals. In this process, the non-grouped sequences are identified as unhealthy or discrete for which additional detection training and classification are required. Considerably the changes between successive sensing intervals are used for variations detection from unified high-fitness groups. Those grouped instances are used for training new vital changes observed at distinct intervals. This improves detection accuracy under controlled errors. For the varying sensing intervals, the proposed method achieves 14.13% high accuracy, 8.29% high grouping rate, 10.77% less error, and 10.07% less detection time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coalitional communication is a dwelling amidst non-dominant differences that requires introspective, complex communicative philosophy and practice. My concern is with differentiation in hierarchies. They are understood and shaped by colonial modernity. They are historical logics and practices of settler colonialism, enslavement, and citizenship. My perspective is feminist, decolonial critiques of modern, capitalist social systems. The analysis is grounded in communicative philosophy in intercultural contexts where folks intend justice and equality. For example, in political democracies, localized social alliances actually harm one another being hegemonic by taking routes of familiarity through structures of linguistic and practical cultural systems. Communicative projects of liberation across oppressions (with monologic and single-axis perceptions) tend to miss intersections of our raced and gendered experiences. The result is unintelligibility among us. In this state, one can sense in the body the space of the liminal—with both a communicative impasse and opening. Rather than aligning liberation and domination in the impasse, I describe the creativity of liminal space as a communicative opening. The opening is a recognition of multiplicity and a refusal to assimilate each other's lived experiences into familiar, complex codes of habituated thought and action. Examining communication hostilities in oppressed–oppressing relations is a necessary condition for coalition. Thus, coalitional communication is a call to engage a full sense of listening to one another as relevant. Ways that decipher codes and signals of resistance come to constitute the project of creating relevant intelligibility together. Thermosensation requires the activation of a unique collection of ion channels and receptors that work in concert to transmit thermal information. It is widely accepted that transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) activation is required for normal cold sensing; however, recent studies have illuminated major roles for other ion channels in this important somatic sensation. In addition to TRPM8, other TRP channels have been reported to contribute to cold transduction mechanisms in diverse sensory neuron populations, with both leak- and voltage-gated channels being identified for their role in the transmission of cold signals. Whether the same channels that contribute to physiological cold sensing also mediate noxious cold signaling remains unclear; however, recent work has found a conserved role for the kainite receptor, GluK2, in noxious cold sensing across species. Additionally, cold-sensing neurons likely engage in functional crosstalk with nociceptors to give rise to cold pain. This Review will provide an update on our understanding of the relationship between various ion channels in the transduction and transmission of cold and highlight areas where further investigation is required. The coherent perceptual experience of one's own body depends on the processing and integration of signals from multiple sensory modalities, including vision, touch, and proprioception. Although nociception provides critical information about damage to the tissues of one's body, little is known about how nociception contributes to own-body perception. A classic experimental approach to investigate the perceptual and neural mechanisms involved in the multisensory experience of one's own body is the rubber hand illusion (RHI). During the RHI, people experience a rubber hand as part of their own body (sense of body ownership) caused by synchronized stroking of the rubber hand in the participant's view and the hidden participant's real hand. We examined whether the RHI can be elicited by visual and "pure" nociceptive stimulation, ie, without tactile costimulation, and if so, whether it follows the basic perceptual rules of the illusion. In 6 separate experiments involving a total of 180 healthy participants, we used a Nd:YAP laser stimulator to specifically target C and Aα fibers in the skin and compared the illusion condition (congruent visuonociceptive stimulation) to control conditions of incongruent visuonociceptive, incongruent visuoproprioceptive, and no nociceptive stimulation. The illusion was quantified through direct (questionnaire) and indirect (proprioceptive drift) behavioral measures. We found that a nociceptive rubber hand illusion (N-RHI) could be elicited and that depended on the spatiotemporal congruence of visuonociceptive signals, consistent with basic principles of multisensory integration. Virtual reality (VR)–guided motor imagery (MI) is a widely used approach for motor rehabilitation, especially for patients with severe motor impairments. Most approaches provide visual guidance from the first‐person perspective (1PP). MI training with visual guidance from the third‐person perspective (3PP) remains largely unexplored. We argue that 3PP MI training has its own advantages and can supplement 1PP MI. For some movements beyond the view of 1PP, such as shoulder shrugging and other axial movements, MI are suitable performed under 3PP. However, the efficiency of existing paradigms for 3PP MI is unsatisfactory. We speculate that the absence of sense of body ownership (SOO) from 3PP could be one possible factor and hypothesize that 3PP MI could be enhanced by eliciting SOO over a 3PP avatar. Based on our hypothesis, a novel paradigm was proposed to enhance 3PP MI by inducing full‐body illusion (FBI) from 3PP, which is similar to the so‐called out‐of‐body experience (OBE), using synchronous visuo‐tactile stimulus with VR. The event‐related Electroencephalograph (EEG) desynchronization (ERD) at motor‐related regions from 31 healthy participants were calculated and compared with a control paradigm without "OBE" FBI induction. This study attempts to enhance 3PP MI with FBI induction. It offers an opportunity to perform MI guided by action observation from 3PP with elicited SOO to the observed avatar. We believe that 3PP MI could provide more possibilities for effective rehabilitation training, when SOO could be elicited to a virtual avatar and the present work demonstrates its viability and effectiveness. Men represent a proportion of those with eating disorders yet are neglected in the existing literature. One area with limited research is how men with eating disorders experience body image. This study investigated how men with eating disorders make sense of their experience of body image. Ten male participants with diagnosed eating disorders were recruited from four National Health Service specialist adult eating disorder services. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and data analysed with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Analysis identified three themes: 'Focus on Self', 'Focus on Others' and 'Systemic Influences and Pressures'. Findings indicated that body image was experienced intrapersonally, interpersonally, and systemically. This study adds to the limited accounts of body image among men with eating disorders. It is recommended that future research explore body image in underrepresented gender and sexuality groups and that clinicians incorporate the nuances of men's experiences of body image into clinical assessment and treatment. Purpose: To introduce a simple system exploitation with the potential to turn MRI scanners into general‐purpose radiofrequency (RF) motion monitoring systems. Methods: Inspired by Pilot Tone (PT), this work proposes Beat Pilot Tone (BPT), in which two or more RF tones at arbitrary frequencies are transmitted continuously during the scan. These tones create motion‐modulated standing wave patterns that are sensed by the receiver coil array, incidentally mixed by intermodulation in the receiver chain, and digitized simultaneously with the MRI data. BPT can operate at almost any frequency as long as the intermodulation products lie within the bandwidth of the receivers. BPT's mechanism is explained in electromagnetic simulations and validated experimentally. Results: Phantom and volunteer experiments over a range of transmit frequencies suggest that BPT may offer frequency‐dependent sensitivity to motion. Using a semi‐flexible anterior receiver array, BPT appears to sense cardiac‐induced body vibrations at microwave frequencies (≥$$ \ge $$1.2 GHz). At lower frequencies, it exhibits a similar cardiac signal shape to PT, likely due to blood volume changes. Other volunteer experiments with respiratory, bulk, and head motion show that BPT can achieve greater sensitivity to motion than PT and greater separability between motion types. Basic multiple‐input multiple‐output (4×22$$ 4\times 22 $$ MIMO) operation with simultaneous PT and BPT in head motion is demonstrated using two transmit antennas and a 22‐channel head‐neck coil. The propagation study of electromagnetic (EM) waves within a human body is becoming essential due to the growing demand for the design and development of implantable sensing nodes in a body area network (BAN). Many researchers are interested in contributing to the development of propagation models in the ultra-wideband (UWB), i.e., 3.1 to 10.6 GHz, for biomedical applications, as well as the license-free Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band. This kind of propagation model is essential in order to design and develop UWB transceivers for in-body, on-body, and off-body communications. This paper looks at the possibility of using a stepped slot patch antenna with a copper ground plane as either an off-body or on-body antenna by comparing measurements taken on a liquid human phantom. The environmental problems caused by thermal reactions have prompted the search for new approaches. Photochemical curing, which uses light energy, offers a sustainable solution for polymerizing complex polymers, reducing energy consumption, and emissions. Current study involves cationic UV‐curing of biobased polyurethanes (PU) with a thermo‐responsive shape memory behavior on very low temperature almost equal to human body temperature. This product has a potential to be utilized as drug carrier or related biomedical applications, as well as self‐tightening materials against human body heat. Polymer has been designed from sesame oil, with slight modification through a facile epoxidation approach. Main objectives of this research were to prepare biobased PU recipe; to utilize a specially designed UV‐curing approach for this synthesis; and to develop shape memory properties upon sensing human body temperature. Prepared material has been analyzed through FTIR, SEM, TGA, DSC, water absorption capacity (WAC), and gel contents (GCs). Shape memory behavior has been tested in both air and water against a range of temperatures (35°C–80°C). At 35°C in 208 s, prepared sample, presented 96.60% Rr and 90.56% Rf, whereas at 80°C in 55 s Rr increased to 98.33% and Rf increased to 100%. Bodily illusions have been used to investigate one's sense of self and body ownership. This study explored the effect of the height of the first-person perspective (1PP) on out-of-body experience (OBE) illusion in which participants see their backs through a head-mounted display, receive visuotactile stimulation, and gradually feel as if they are sitting behind themselves, experiencing a sensation similar to an OBE. We hypothesized that increasing or decreasing the height of the 1PP would induce the OBE illusion at all heights and that participants' perceived own heights would adjust according to the 1PP height. We also predicted that the size and distance of external objects would vary according to the perceived height of one's own body. The results revealed that the OBE illusion occurred at all 1PP heights and was stronger when the 1PP height was lower or higher than usual. Meanwhile, the participants' perceived own heights, the sizes and distances of external objects did not change. These results suggest that manipulating the 1PP may affect the magnitude of the OBE illusion, but not the perception of the dimensions of the self or external objects. Background: Awareness of one's own states is a particularly important part of cognition and emotion regulation. Recently, the concept of alexisomia has been used to refer to lack of awareness and expression of somatic sensations. Developing self-reported questionnaires to evaluate alexisomia represents a challenge for clinical psychology and medicine. In this context, we suggested to adapt the Body Awareness Questionnaire in French to measure alexisomia and its relation to alexithymia. In fact, we carried out a backtranslation and studied the validity of the construct in relation to proximal constructs around emotional awareness. Methods: For this study, 610 university students completed questionnaires measuring a three dimensions alexithymia concept [with The Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20)] or the five dimensions alexithymia concept [with The Bermond-Vorts Alexithymia Questionnaire (BVAQ-B)] and alexisomia (with the BAQ). Results: Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the BAQ can be envisaged through 4 factors as well as a unidimensional model to refer to alexisomia. We also found that body awareness was negatively related to scores of alexithymia. Conclusion: Results are discussed in light of the construct of alexisomia and its clinical implications in somatic as well as mental disorders. We suggest that the BAQ, which assesses interoception, can contribute, in part, to the assessment of alexisomia. The evolution of wearable electronic devices has drawn attention to personal thermal management (PTM) technologies encompassing the sensing and regulation of body temperature and/or harnessing human body heat for energy harvesting. However, solid PTM devices encounter inherent limitations concerning thermal contact and mechanical compatibility with the human body. This study introduces a thermal interface hydrogel exhibiting high thermal conduction and mechanical compatibility with human skin. Employing a strategic design approach, the mechanical and thermal properties of the hydrogel are assessed. This hydrogel is a structured composite incorporating alumina microplatelets embedded layer‐by‐layer within a densified polymer matrix. Incorporating aligned alumina platelets in the layered structure, combined with a densified polymer matrix ensuring close contact and packing of polymer chains, enhances the thermal conductivity of the hydrogel. Simultaneously, it maintains mechanical flexibility and robustness. Subsequently, the resulting hydrogel is showcased as a thermal interface material sandwiched between flexible human skin and a rigid Peltier module for a cooling device affixed to the human skin. Anticipated applications of the hydrogel‐based thermal interface material include advanced bioelectronics with added functionalities in PTM, all without inducing mechanical or physical discomfort. Gait guidance systems that synchronize the gait rhythm with an avatar in a mixed reality (MR) environment are attracting attention owing to their rehabilitation applications. More effective gait guidance can be achieved by changing body sensations for the sense of embodiment (SoE), which refers to the feeling of owning, controlling, and being inside a body in MR. This study investigated full-body synchronous motion between a human and a virtual avatar to enhance the SoE in walking with actual position changes in the real world. The full-body motion and gait rhythm were measured using body-worn inertial measurement units and a visual avatar was provided through a transparent head-mounted display. The results showed that the SoE of the participants was enhanced under higher synchronization conditions. In addition, questionnaire results showed that the SoE in the synchronous condition was significantly higher than that in the asynchronous condition, and the SoE in the self-avatar condition was significantly higher than that in the other-avatar condition. This indicates that a higher synchronization level with the appearance of an avatar leads to a stronger SoE in the human perception mechanism, which is important for potential application in medical or other fields. Pain, as a multidimensional and subjective experience, intertwines with various aspects of body representation, involving sensory, affective and motivational components. This review explores the bidirectional relationship between pain and body representations, emphasizing the impact of the sense of ownership on pain perception, the transformative impact of pain on motor imagery, the effects associated with vicarious pain perception on body representations and the role of pain in the maintenance of body representations in specific clinical conditions. Literature indicates complex interactions between pain and body representations, with the sense of ownership inducing analgesic effects in some cases and hyperalgesia in others, contingent upon factors such as the appearance of the affected limb. Pain sensations inform the body on which actions might be executed without harm, and which are potentially dangerous. This information impacts on motor imagery too, showing reduced motor imagery and increased reaction times in tasks where motor imagery involves the painful body parts. Finally, contrary to the conventional view, according to which pain impairs body representation, evidence suggests that pain can serve as an informative somatosensory index, preserving or even enhancing the representation of the absent or affected body parts. This bidirectional relationship highlights the dynamic and multifaceted nature of the interplay between pain and body representations, offering insights into the adaptive nature of the central nervous system in response to perceived bodily states. A cleanroom free optimized fabrication of a low-cost facile tungsten diselenide (WSe2) combined with chitosan-based hydrogel device is reported for multifunctional applications including tactile sensing, pulse rate monitoring, respiratory rate monitoring, human body movements detection, and human electrophysiological signal detection. Chitosan being a natural biodegradable, non-toxic compound serves as a substrate to the semiconducting WSe2 electrode which is synthesized using a single step hydrothermal technique. Elaborate characterization studies are performed to confirm the morphological, structural, and electrical properties of the fabricated chitosan/WSe2 device. Chitosan/WSe2 sensor with copper contacts on each side is put directly on skin to capture human body motions. The resistivity of the sample was calculated as 26 kΩ m−1. The device behaves as an ultrasensitive pressure sensor for tactile and arterial pulse sensing with response time of 0.9 s and sensitivity of around 0.02 kPa−1. It is also capable for strain sensing with a gauge factor of 54 which is significantly higher than similar other reported electrodes. The human body movements sensing can be attributed to the piezoresistive character of WSe2 that originates from its non-centrosymmetric structure. Further, the sensor is employed for monitoring respiratory rate which measures to 13 counts/min for healthy individual and electrophysiological signals like ECG and EOG which can be used later for detecting numerous pathological conditions in humans. Electrophysiological signal sensing is carried out using a bio-signal amplifier (Bio-Amp EXG Pill) connected to Arduino. The rubber hand illusion involves the sense of body ownership of a fake hand. We showed that concurrent visuotactile stimuli to unilateral rubber and real hands can induce the embodiment of bilateral rubber hands when both rubber hands are positioned on the table. The complex interplay of fear, attention, and behavior toward bodily sensations with psychopathological symptoms and how they mutually influence and potentially reinforce one another remains to be fully elucidated. In this study, we used a network analytical approach to unravel these complex interactions. Specifically, we aimed to identify central symptoms and etiologically relevant factors that might be associated with anxiety and depressive core symptoms. To this end, the following clusters were assessed in 791 adults: interoceptive fear, interoceptive attention, maladaptive behaviors related to bodily sensations, and core symptoms of anxiety and depression. This network was modeled using a Gaussian Graphical Model. Central variables (nodes) were identified using centrality indices and bridge analysis. Self-examination and attention to bodily sensations emerged as central nodes. Moreover, time spent paying attention to bodily sensations, fear of anxiety-related sensations, and self-examination were identified as central bridge nodes, that is, central nodes connecting psychopathologically relevant symptom clusters. The present study indicates that fear of bodily sensations, the amount of attention and time spent focusing on somatic sensations, and self-examination are central factors. The findings suggest potential targets for future longitudinal studies on the impact of these factors for the escalation of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Background: Attachment theory has served as an influential framework for understanding psychopathology, partly due to reliable assessment methodology. The influence of insecure attachment on attitudes toward the body and the impact this might have for the development of psychopathology is however less well elucidated. Method: A total of 123 adolescents (35 with borderline personality disorder or BPD, 25 with other personality disorders [OPD] and 63 comprising a normative control group) were interviewed with the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and the Mirror Interview (MI). The MI questions respondents about how they feel about their bodies, as they look in the mirror. Results: The AAIs from the Borderline group were predominantly insecure‐preoccupied and unresolved. These adolescents had significantly lower levels of a positive and integrated sense of self and body than the other groups. Regression results revealed a high loving relationship with fathers, low involving anger with father, high coherence of mind, slight derogation of mother & low levels of unresolved loss uniquely and additively predicted 55% of variance in the summary score assigned to MI responses, that is, the summary score for a Positive and Integrated Body Representation (PIBR). Conclusion: Unfavorable attachment experiences and current states of mind regarding attachment may give rise to problems with establishing PIBRs, and thus play a role in the development of psychopathology, especially BPD. In this comment paper on von Fircks (2023a), I would like to focus on four issues and offer some reflections on them: first, what is happening in the process of a new I arising through mindfulness meditation practice? I would like to supplement the dialogue between Buber and Rogers in 1957 on the dynamism of I and Me, which is the basis of Mead's theory of self formation, in which I and Me separate, discover and meet a new self. The second, is that meditation, which at first glance appears to be an internal meditation practice and a personal activity, leads to a semiotic mediated social process. The Tao and early Buddhist ideas that form the background to the experiential process of mindfulness meditation will be reviewed, and the significance of people experiencing the interdependence of non-human nature and the environment through the practice will be discussed. Third, connecting this to the idea of Umwelt (Uexküll) and the semiosphere (Lotman), an attempt is made to extend the otherness as a collating body of self formation to Umwelt. Fourth, mindfulness meditation focuses attention on the breath. In relation to Mead's focus on the environment under the skin, i.e. corporeality, I will supplement the psychological meaning of cultivating the body's sense of interoception through the sensing of repetitive movements of tension and relaxation. Through the above, what kind of semiotic mediating function does mindfulness meditation have in relation to the construction of the new I, and how does it lead to the creation of social meaning? Intelligent recognition of human positioning, posture, and hand‐gesture based on wireless electromagnetic (EM) induction has recently garnered widespread attention and is anticipated to find wide applications in various smart scenarios. Here a novel and robust hand gesture recognition method based on programmable topological metasurfaces is presented. By exploiting the programmability of surface waves by the topological metasurfaces, multi‐dimensional near‐field coupling pathways are flexibly constructed to extract the EM feature information corresponding to different hand gestures. An intelligent EM acquisition system that can rapidly capture the EM information of the topological metasurface for different gesture coupling conditions is built. The EM transmission data for thousands of gestures to train the neural network, which can achieve a recognition accuracy of more than 99% for 5 single‐hand gestures, and 25 two‐hand gesture combinations are experimentally collected. It is expected that the proposed scheme will advance the research in human body wireless sensing and promote the intelligent sensing applications of the topological metasurfaces. The multifaceted nature of body experience, encompassing affective, cognitive, and perceptual components, plays a critical role in the development and persistence of conditions such as anorexia nervosa (AN). Recent research attempted to address such disturbance to improve therapeutical effectiveness, using mirror exposure (ME) and body‐swapping (BS) techniques in immersive virtual reality (VR). Procedures from a third‐person perspective—as mirror‐like experiences—were primarily used to address bodily cognitive and affective components, whereas first‐person ones—as BS—were used to correct distorted body perception. This study investigated the effect of spatial reference frame on body self‐consciousness and body perception during BS. Data revealed two main findings: Even though embodiment was significantly enhanced when participants engaged with a virtual body from a first‐person viewpoint, both egocentric and allocentric perspectives influenced body size estimation (BSE), suggesting that both spatial perspectives critically form and sustain body self‐perception. We discussed predictive coding theory to explain spatial perspective influence on body experience, highlighting the potential therapeutic benefits of incorporating first and third‐person perspectives on body illusions (BIs) for more effective interventions targeting body‐related disturbances. Focusing on three ludic journeys through an autoethnographic account of Wellington, New Zealand, this paper explores how the performance of playful movements can alter the meaning, practice, and feeling of urban spaces. Attention is drawn to becoming hybrid, how technology mediates and augments the power to transform the everyday and support playful engagement with the city. These three ludic stories focus on e-scootering, cycling, and playing an augmented reality game, and highlight how play orientates our bodies through a sense of 'with-ness', with our environment and others. It also looks at orientations of 'against-ness', a leaning away from the materiality of objects, spaces, and events through play. This article aims to deepen the understanding of existential intrasubjectivity and intersubjectivity as they relate to the body, being, and nature, as experienced through the lens of Warli philosophy, particularly the Kahankar and the Ahankar. This reflexive inquiry lies at the intersection of the author's identity as a researcher, a dance movement therapist, and a spiritual being. The contemplation includes experiencing Nature as a witness, another facet of the Warli conviction of the profound interconnectedness with the natural world, recognizing our inherent composition as part of nature. Another dimension of engaging with this philosophy is through the practice of Authentic Movement, where the imagination, the psyche, and the soul all dance together as they are witnessed nonjudgmentally. I employed an external witness as well as used self-witnessing in the form of an "inner witness." The Somatosensory Amplification Scale (SSAS) was designed to measure individual's tendency to experience visceral and somatic sensations as unusually intense, disturbing and alarming. In this study, we aimed to investigate the reliability and validity of the SSAS in the Chinese general population, as well as the mediating effect of somatosensory amplification in the relationship between alexithymia and somatization. A total of 386 healthy adults were enrolled in this study. Participants completed the Chinese versions of the Somatosensory Amplification Scale (SSAS-C), the somatization subscale of the Symptom Check List 90 (SCL-90 som), the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), and the Short form Health Anxiety Inventory (SHAI). One hundred and thirtythree participants were randomly selected to complete the SSAS-C again two weeks after the initial assessment. The reliability and validity of the SSAS-C were analyzed. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the one-factor model achieved adequate model fits; one item was deleted due to low factor loading. The revised SSAS-C showed good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. The SSAS-C scores correlated positively with the scores of SCL-90 som, TAS-20 and the SHAI, showing good convergent validity. In addition, somatosensory amplification mediated the association between alexithymia and somatization. The Chinese version of SSAS has acceptable reliability and validity for the general population. The kidneys facilitate energy conservation through reabsorption of nutrients including glucose. Almost all the filtered blood glucose is reabsorbed by the kidneys. Loss of glucose in urine (glycosuria) is offset by an increase in endogenous glucose production to maintain normal energy supply in the body. How the body senses this glucose loss and consequently enhances glucose production is unclear. Using renal Slc2a2 (also known as Glut2) knockout mice, we demonstrate that elevated glycosuria activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which in turn drives endogenous glucose production. This phenotype was attenuated by selective afferent renal denervation, indicating the involvement of the afferent nerves in promoting the compensatory increase in glucose production. In addition, through plasma proteomics analyses we observed that acute phase proteins - which are usually involved in the body's defense mechanisms against a threat - were the top candidates which were either upregulated or downregulated in renal Slc2a2 KO mice. Overall, afferent renal nerves contribute to promoting endogenous glucose production in response to elevated glycosuria and loss of glucose in urine is sensed as a biological threat in mice. These findings may be useful in improving the efficiency of drugs like SGLT2 inhibitors that are intended to treat hyperglycemia by enhancing glycosuria but are met with a compensatory increase in endogenous glucose production. Multisensory integration plays a crucial role in building the sense of body ownership, i.e., the perceptual status of one's body for which the body is perceived as belonging to oneself. Temporal and spatial mismatching of visual and tactile signals coming from one's body can reduce ownership feelings towards the body and its parts, i.e., produce disownership feelings. Here, we investigated whether visuo–tactile conflict also affects the sensorimotor representation of the body in space (i.e., body schema) and the perception of the space around the body in terms of action potentiality (i.e., reaching space). In two experiments, body schema (Experiment 1) and reaching space (Experiment 2) were assessed before and after either synchronous or asynchronous visuo–tactile stimulation. Results showed that the asynchronous condition, provoking multisensory conflict, caused disownership over one's hand and concurrently affected the body schema and the reaching space. These findings indicate that body schema and reaching space could be dynamically shaped by the multisensory regularities that build up the sense of body ownership. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Leisure takes its action in space and time. Virtual reality manipulates this spatiotemporal premise to imitate a leisure experience. This study examined virtual leisure from a phenomenological perspective and with a phenomenological method. A model of virtual leisure experience involving the body, space, and time was postulated. Results showed that virtual reality is distinguishable from reality by its technologically mediated consciousness. The physical body is a connector by which the real and the virtual penetrate each other. The virtual space encases a corporeal body, a habitual body, and a body in technology. Time in virtual reality is condensed into a personal time that the body intuits and an impersonal time that the body remembers. Ayahuasca has gained the attention of researchers over the past decade as psychedelic-assisted therapy for MDMA and psilocybin have progressed through FDA approved clinical trials. In spite of the increase in research, there are relatively few clinical studies of ayahuasca and little qualitative research on the therapeutic or healing uses of psychedelics in general. The present study included 41 Western participants who were interviewed about their participation in facilitated group ayahuasca experiences (e.g., in shamanic, neoshamanic, spiritual, and religious settings). Participants were interviewed about their intentions for participating, along with the perceived impact of the experiences. In particular, we focused on impacts that participants perceived to be sustained and enduring. We identified an impressive range of beneficial impacts, including improvements in areas that are often a focus of psychotherapy, such as mental health and substance use, health behaviors, interpersonal relationships, sense of self, attitude. Extratherapeutic effects were also observed in areas such as changes in creativity, somatic sensations, physical health/pain, sense of connection to nature, spirituality, and concern for the greater good. Two participants also reported problematic experiences, apparently related to set and setting. Implications for research and practice, along with a humanistic framework for interpreting these findings is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Proprioception, the ability to sense the body's position and movement, is essential for athletic performance and physical well-being. The literature highlights the importance of proprioceptive training in rehabilitation, sports performance, injury prevention, and motor function enhancement. Targeted training programs can improve balance, coordination, motor learning, and overall physical performance. This systematic review aimed to examine the effects of proprioceptive training methods on sports and athletic performance. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted using the Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus databases, and a literature review was performed based on the PICO criteria outlined in the abstract and title. Results: Following the search, 178 articles were identified using relevant keywords, of which 19 directly addressed sports performance and were included in this study. The findings revealed that proprioceptive training had a positive influence on various aspects of athletic performance, including physiological capacity, balance, explosive strength, speed, agility, postural stability, knee joint position sense, muscle activation, reduction of chronic joint instability, dribbling, passing, and technical ball-control skills. Conclusions: These results indicate that proprioceptive training can be an effective strategy for experts and coaches to enhance athletes' physical performance. Primarily, proprioceptive exercises should be used inside and outside the training sessions to enable athletes to interact more effectively with their bodies, reduce the risk of injury, and improve power transfer. As part of research on human augmentation, multiple bodies are used in a virtual environment. For example, a study on multiple partial body parts has been conducted using up to 64 hands and showed that multiple hands reduced the distance traveled by one hand. However, body perception has yet to be verified. In this study, we investigated how body perception changes when nine hands, partial bodies, are moved synchronously in a virtual environment, compared to a single hand. In addition, we examined whether the sense of body ownership for all nine hands was elicited simultaneously or whether it was elicited for some of the hands while switching between them. Participants performed a reaching task using one or nine hands presented in a virtual environment. After the reaching task, a threat stimulus was given, and hand movements in response to the threat were measured. After completion of each condition, the subjective sense of body ownership and sense of agency was investigated using a Likert scale. The results indicated that users felt the sense of body ownership of several hands for the nine hands and manipulated them by switching their attention to multiple bodies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

What happens to our stories of masculinity when they begin from the sensory and queer? This essay is an exercise in such storytelling, in particular the narration of two male bodies huddled under an umbrella in the pouring rain. Centering an ethnographic vignette from my fieldwork on queer erotics conducted in Sri Lanka in 2016 I read through the literature on hegemonic masculinity in Sri Lanka as well as sensory masculinities to insist on theorizations of masculinity that are more nuanced and supple and attend to the lived complexity of a structure. Through a speculative interpretive mode that braids the sensory and the discursive, the structural and the inter/intra-personal, this paper suggests that masculinity can be conceptualized as an assemblage that is always in formation, one constituted by symbolic, hormonal, libidinal, political, material, affective, historical phenomena and always in flux, responding to specific calibrations and intensities of stimuli. Such a theorization of masculinity allows me to think of the queer desire in this ethnographic scene as not anomalous, but rather made possible by the very conditions of normative masculinity. Near-death experiences (NDEs) cannot be defined merely as a collection of phenomenal features. An accurate definition needs to describe what NDEs essentially are, that is, what lies behind the phenomenal features. The definition would describe what happens in the experience to account for the different features; this can only be fully described in the context of an underlying theoretical framework. In this paper, we propose the mind entity framework, which holds that a human being is a nonmaterial mind united with the physical body. In an NDE, the mind, or seat of consciousness, separates from the body and operates independently of it until the mind returns to and reunites with the body. From this framework, we identified the nine NDE features from the 16 features of the NDE Scale (Greyson, 1983) that specifically imply the separation of the mind from the body. The five most prevalent of these "separation" features accounted for 98.8% of NDEs in a sample of NDE accounts in the IANDS Experience Registry (N=565). The prevalence of these five "essential" NDE features was repeated in three other large NDE datasets published in the last 20 years. Therefore, an NDE can be defined as a profound subjective experience caused by a person's consciousness separating from their physical body. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Experimental research evaluating differences between the visceral and somatic stimulation is limited to pain and typically uses different induction methods for visceral and somatic stimulation (e.g., rectal balloon distention vs. tactile hand stimulation). Our study aimed to compare differences in response time, intensity, unpleasantness, and threat between identical electrical visceral and somatic stimulations at both painful and non‐painful perceptual thresholds. Methods: Electrical stimulation was applied to the wrist and distal esophagus in 20 healthy participants. A double pseudorandom staircase determined perceptual thresholds of Sensation, Discomfort, and Pain for the somatic and visceral stimulations, separately. Stimulus reaction time (ms, via button press), and intensity, unpleasantness, and threat ratings were recorded after each stimulus. General linear mixed models compared differences in the four outcomes by stimulation type, threshold, and the stimulation type‐by‐threshold interaction. Sigmoidal maximum effect models evaluated differences in outcomes across all delivered stimulation intensities. Key Results: Overall, visceral stimulations were perceived as more intense, threatening, and unpleasant compared to somatic stimulations, but participants responded faster to somatic stimulations. There was no significant interaction effect, but planned contrasts demonstrated differences at individual thresholds. Across all delivered intensities, higher intensity stimulations were needed to reach the half‐maximum effect of self‐reported intensity, unpleasantness, and threat ratings in the visceral domain. Conclusions and Inferences: Differences exist between modalities for both non‐painful and painful sensations. These findings may have implications for translating paradigms and behavioral treatments from the somatic domain to the visceral domain, though future research in larger clinical samples is needed. The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on all countries and induced excessive stress and anxiety among many who are dealing with this invisible danger. Stress and anxiety originate from a threat, and chronic exposure to stressors results in feeling overwhelmed. When the coping strategies are not effective in a certain situation, the person might demonstrate conditioned reactions like fight, flight, or freeze. Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a resiliency-based approach that focuses on these conditioned responses of the nervous system to support the innate regulatory capacity of the body through interoceptive awareness and bodily sensations. This study aims to increase resiliency factors through a SE-based group counselling process. Two groups, an intervention and control group, each consisting of nine individuals, attended a group process for eight weeks. In addition to these groups, a waitlist control group was formed consisting of 31 people. In addition to pre-and-post individual interviews, The COPE-Revised and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale were administered to both experiment groups and the waitlist control group. An ANCOVA analysis found that the group process was statistically significant for both reducing stress and developing coping strategies. Furthermore, as a result of the qualitative content analysis of the interviews, five themes emerged: hope, universality, cohesiveness, insight, and interpersonal output (new behaviour). Fitness trackers are increasingly used by their wearers to monitor and optimise their exercise, health, and well-being. What is usually not considered is the role our interoceptive sense, the sense for inner-bodily processes, plays in the interpretation of body data and the formation of habits. By including neuroscientific research, perspectives from pragmatist philosophy, and science and technology studies into the analysis of self-tracking devices, this article will give a perspective on the scope and the effects of the involvement of the interoceptive sense in self-tracking practices. By offering a critical analysis of the contextualisation of experience through self-tracking devices, this article will argue that interoceptive awareness provides the context to make sense of body data. I propose here that paying greater attention to how interoception is involved in the mediation of bodily processes and activities through tracking devices can give novel insights into self-tracking as an embodied and affective practice. The utilization of remote sensing satellite imagery is crucial for advancing scientific knowledge in identifying water bodies. This technology has diverse applications, including natural disaster forecasting, as well as the detection of droughts and floods. Currently, there are few programs available specifically designed to locate naturally disappearing water bodies. Accurately delineating aquatic features from Very high-resolution (VHR) remotely sensed and moderately high-resolution images poses a significant challenge in remote sensing. The intricate spectrum combinations resulting from aquatic vegetation, various lake/river colours, mud along the sand, and shadows from surrounding plants make it difficult to determine water body boundaries. To enhance water body extraction from VHR and moderately high-resolution remote sensing images, it is imperative to increase feature variety and semantic data. In this study, we employed the nested dense residual network, known as D3net, to detect water bodies in satellite images. The Adam optimizer was utilized for training the satellite images, minimizing losses in the process. The optimizer also identified the optimal values for the activation function and the number of nodes in each layer. For segmentation, 5682 Sentinel-2 satellite images (comprising 2841 satellite images and their respective masks) were used, focusing on the Europe geo location. These masks were generated using the Normalized Water Difference Index (NWDI). The proposed model demonstrated a performance of 95.36% Intersection over Union (IOU) and 96.99% accuracy, making it suitable for edge detection, blurry image recognition, and lowresolution image detection. While the model is reliable and accurate in its predictions, it requires more memory due to the utilization of VHR and moderately high-resolution images for segmentation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Emotional processing has been attracting increased attention. We herein present three patients with intractable epilepsy in whom emotional responses were elicited by electrical cortical stimulation. Negative feelings were produced in all patients; however, the content of each differed. In patient 1, the stimulation of the right anterior cingulate gyrus elicited unpleasant thoughts. In patient 2, the stimulation of the right posterior cingulate gyrus evoked anxiety. In patient 3, the stimulation of the right prefrontal cortex induced anxiety associated with a somatic sensation. Childhood maltreatment has been linked to adult somatic symptoms, although this has rarely been examined in daily life. Furthermore, the localization of somatization associated with childhood maltreatment and its subtypes is unknown. This large-scale experience sampling study used body maps to examine the relationships between childhood maltreatment, its subtypes, and the intensity and location of negative somatic sensations in daily life. Participants (N = 2,234; 33% female and 67% male) were part of MyBPLab 2.0, a study conducted using a bespoke mobile phone application. Four categories of childhood maltreatment (emotional abuse, emotional neglect, physical abuse, and physical neglect) were measured using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Using gender-matched human silhouettes, participants indicated the location and intensity of feelings of negative activation in the body. Childhood maltreatment generally and its four measured subtypes were all positively associated with heightened negative activation on both the front and back body maps. For females, total childhood maltreatment was associated with negative activation in the abdomen and lower back, while for males, the association was localized to the lower back. Similarly, each of the four subscales had localized associations with negative activation in the abdomen and lower back in females and lower back in males, except for emotional abuse, which was also associated with negative activation in the abdomen in males. These associations likely reflect increased somatization in individuals exposed to childhood maltreatment, suggesting a role for psychotherapeutic interventions in alleviating associated distress. This article seeks to develop a literary theory based on Vinciane Despret's Autobiography of an Octopus. Our aim is to read the narrative in a way that combines the main premise of its creation, the Anthropocene, with instruments developed by Bruno Latour and Donna Haraway, such as the war between Earthbound and Humans, sympoiesis and speculative fabulation. In this context, the Anthropocene takes on the character of "times of urgency", favourable to innovative relationships between beings and between disciplines and contrary to eschatological narratives of the end of the world. In this sense, we intend to outline a theoretical practice that allows the emergence of paradigms that value cognition through the body and the senses, diminishing the prominence of learning or reading traditionally understood as exercises of reason. An adequate supply of O2 is essential for the maintenance of cellular activity. Systemic or local hypoxia can be experienced during decreased O2 availability or associated with diseases, or a combination of both. Exposure to hypoxia triggers adjustments in multiple physiological systems in the body to generate appropriate homeostatic responses. However, with significant reductions in the arterial partial pressure of O2, hypoxia can be life‐threatening and cause maladaptive changes or cell damage and death. To mitigate the impact of limited O2 availability on cellular activity, O2 chemoreceptors rapidly detect and respond to reductions in the arterial partial pressure of O2, triggering orchestrated responses of increased ventilation and cardiac output, blood flow redistribution and metabolic adjustments. In mammals, the peripheral chemoreceptors of the carotid body are considered to be the main hypoxic sensors and the primary source of excitatory feedback driving respiratory, cardiovascular and autonomic responses. However, current evidence indicates that the CNS contains specialized brainstem and spinal cord regions that can also sense hypoxia and stimulate brain networks independently of the carotid body inputs. In this manuscript, we review the discoveries about the functioning of the O2 chemoreceptors and their contribution to the monitoring of O2 levels in the blood and brain parenchyma and mounting cardiorespiratory responses to maintain O2 homeostasis. We also discuss the implications of the chemoreflex‐related mechanisms in paediatric and adult pathologies. What is the topic of this review?Hypoxia is a life‐threatening condition. The restoration of sensory feedback is one of the current challenges in the field of prosthetics. This work, following the analysis of the various types of sensory feedback, aims to present a prototype device that could be used both for implantable applications to perform PNS and for wearable applications, performing TENS, to restore sensory feedback. The two systems are composed of three electronic boards that are presented in detail, as well as the bench tests carried out. To the authors' best knowledge, this work presents the first device that can be used in a dual scenario for restoring sensory feedback. Both the implantable and wearable versions respected the expected values regarding the stimulation parameters. In its implantable version, the proposed system allows simultaneous and independent stimulation of 30 channels. Furthermore, the capacity of the wearable version to elicit somatic sensations was evaluated on healthy participants demonstrating performance comparable with commercial solutions.
