Plants, with their natural and nutritional properties, are also important sources of medicine. The study aimed to determine total phenolic, total flavonoid, total oxidant, total antioxidant, antiproliferative and antimicrobial activities of parts of the celery (Apium graveolens L.) plant. Samples of celery were gathered in Turkey and Iraq. Celery parts (leaves, tuber, and seed) were extracted with ethanol and methanol using the Soxhlet apparatus. Total phenolic (Folin-Ciocalteu reagent), total flavonoid (aluminum chloride assay), total antioxidant and total oxidant (Rel Assay kits) and antimicrobial (agar dilution method) activities of parts of the celery plant were determined. Using the MTT assay, the antiproliferative activity against the human lung cancer cell line A549 was ascertained. The study's findings indicate that, in terms of biological activity, plant samples obtained in Turkey exhibited higher levels of total oxidant activity than those collected in Iraq; additionally, the antiproliferative activity of the plants were observed to be dose dependent. Plant samples also demonstrated high levels of activity against Acinetobacter baumannii. In conclusion, it has been established that the celery plant possesses natural antibacterial, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mushrooms are one of the indispensable elements of human diets. Edible mushrooms stand out with their aroma and nutritional properties. In this study, some biological activities of the wild edible mushroom Hericium erinaceus were determined. In this context, firstly, the most suitable extraction conditions of the fungus in terms of biological activity were determined. First, 64 different experiments were performed with the Soxhlet device under 40–70 °C extraction temperature, 3–9 h extraction time, and 0.5–2 mg/mL extraction conditions. As a result, a total antioxidant status (TAS) analysis was performed, and the extraction conditions were optimized so that the objective function was the maximum TAS value. The data obtained from the experimental study were modeled with artificial neural networks (ANNs), one of the artificial intelligence methods, and optimized with a genetic algorithm (GA). All subsequent tests were performed using the extract obtained under optimum extraction conditions. The antioxidant capacity of the mushroom was assessed using Rel assay kits and the DPPH and FRAP techniques. The agar dilution method was used to measure the antimicrobial activity. The anti-Alzheimer activity was assessed based on the activities of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). The antiproliferative activity was assessed against the A549 cancer cell line. The total phenolic content was measured using the Folin–Ciocalteu reagent. The measurement of total flavonoids was conducted using the aluminum chloride test. LC-MS/MS equipment was used to screen for the presence of standard chemicals. The optimum extraction conditions were found to be a 60.667 °C temperature, 7.833 h, and 1.98 mg/mL. It was determined that the mushroom has high antioxidant potential. It was determined that the substance was successful at combating common bacterial and fungal strains when used at dosages ranging from 25 to 200 µg/mL. The high antiproliferative effect of the substance was attributed to its heightened concentration. The anti-AChE value was found to be 13.85 μg/mL, while the anti-BChE value was confirmed to be 28.00 μg/mL. The phenolic analysis of the mushroom revealed the presence of 13 chemicals. This investigation found that H. erinaceus exhibits robust biological activity when extracted under appropriate circumstances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In alternative and complementary medicine, plant-based remedies have prominent roles. Here, we analysed the wild mint, Mentha longifolia (L.) L. collected from Mangesh/Duhok (Iraq) for its phenolic and essential oil content, total antioxidant status (TAS) and total oxidant status (TOS), DPPH free radical scavenging activity, antibacterial, antiproliferative, and DNA protecting activities. Specifically, a Soxhlet apparatus was used to extract the aerial portions of the plant with methanol as well as dichloromethane. The GC-MS instrument measured the amount of essential oils present. A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to analyse the phenolic composition. A Rel Assay kit was used to determine the TAS and TOS levels. Further, DPPH assay was used to quantify antioxidant capacity; MTT assay for antiproliferative efficacy against A549 cancer cell line; and the ability to shield pBR322 supercoiled DNA was tested.. Standard bacteria and fungus strains were used in an agar dilution assay to measure antimicrobial activity. The results demonstrated the plant's capacity to inhibit cell proliferation, low DPPH activity, and significant antimicrobial activity. The plant was found to have TAS value of 2.860 mmol/L, TOS value of 14.858 µmol/L, and an OSI (oxidative stress index) value of 0.522. At 200 µg/mL, the plant extract exhibited DNA-protective effect. The GC-MS study also found the presence of four different chemicals [1-isopropyl-4- methyl-1,4-cyclohexadiene (C10H16), pulegone (C10H16O), phenol, 2-methyl-5-(1-methylethyl) (C10H14O) and caryophyllene (C15H24)]. Further, we identified the following phenolic acids: gallic acid, catechin, cinnamaldehyde, chlorogenic acid, coumaric acid, benzoic acid and hydroxy-benzoic acid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, antioxidant (TAS), oxidant (TOS) and antimicrobial activities of samples collected from Osmaniye province, which is located in the Eastern Mediterranean Region of Turkey and where Arum dioscoridis Sm. consumption is common, were determined. Water extracts of leaf parts of plant samples were obtained in a soxhlet device. TAS and TOS status were determined using Rel Assay kits. Antimicrobial activities of plant samples were determined against standard bacterial and fungal strains using agar dilution method. At the end of the studies, the highest TAS value among the plant samples was determined as 6.486±0.182. The highest TOS value was determined as 15.576±0.235. The highest OSI (oxidative stress index) value was determined as 0.285±0.007. In addition, A. dioscoridis extracts were determined to be effective against test microorganisms at 50-800 µg/mL concentrations. As a result, it was determined that the samples collected from different regions of the A. dioscoridis samples used in our study showed variability. In addition, it has been determined that A. dioscoridis may be an important antioxidant and antimicrobial source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plants have been used by many communities for different purposes such as food, shelter, medicine. The present study aimed to determine phenolic content and biological potential of Glaucium alakirensis Aykurt, K. Yıldız & A. Özçandır, which is endemic to Antalya (Turkey). Phenolic composition of the plant was analyzed with HPLC device, while antiradical activity was determined by DPPH method. Antimicrobial tests were conducted with agar dilution method against standard bacteria and fungus strains. Total antioxidant and oxidant status were determined using Rel Assay kits. As a result of HPLC analysis, the presence of catechin, chlorogenic acid, hydroxybenzoic acid, quercetin and gallic acid was determined. Plant extracts were effective against microorganisms at concentrations of 50-200 μg/mL. It was determined that the plant has high antiradical activity. Today, many different methods are applied for the correct use of foods and to prevent their deterioration. Ensuring healthy conditions for people in food consumption and consumption of healthy foods is very important for human welfare. In this study, food spoilage, the factors that cause food spoilage, its effects on a global basis, food transport systems (cold chain) and measures that prevent or delay food spoilage are discussed. Mushrooms have been used for both culinary and medicinal reasons for a very long time. Mushrooms are useful as both a food and a medication due to their high nutritional, protein, vitamin, and phenolic content. The current research aims to determine the antioxidant activity and phenolic content of Hebeloma sinapizans. Multiple epidemiological research looked at the possible link between polyphenol consumption and cardiovascular illness. Antioxidant, antiplatelet, antiinflammatory, antilipidemic, and antihypertensive are the categories used to classify the actions of phenolic substances. HPLC was used to isolate the phenolic compounds (HPLC). Measurements of oxidative stress, total oxidant levels, and total antioxidant levels were all calculated with the use of Rel Assay kits. The mushroom's TAS, TOS, and OSI values were measured, and its gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, and cinnamic acid concentrations were identified. Due to its high levels of phenolic compounds, H. synapizans is thought to be a source of phenolic compounds. High TAS and TOS values and low OSI values indicate that the mushroom has antioxidant potential. As a result, it has been seen that H. synapizans can be a good source of antioxidants.
