Many sampling strategies commonly used in molecular dynamics, such as umbrella sampling and alchemical free energy methods, involve sampling from multiple states. The Multistate Bennett Acceptance Ratio (MBAR) formalism is a widely used way of recombining the resulting data. However, the error of the MBAR estimator is not well-understood: previous error analyses of MBAR assumed independent samples. In this work, we derive a central limit theorem for MBAR estimates in the presence of correlated data, further justifying the use of MBAR in practical applications. Moreover, our central limit theorem yields an estimate of the error that can be decomposed into contributions from the individual Markov chains used to sample the states. This gives additional insight into how sampling in each state affects the overall error. We demonstrate our error estimator on an umbrella sampling calculation of the free energy of isomerization of the alanine dipeptide and an alchemical calculation of the hydration free energy of methane. Our numerical results demonstrate that the time required for the Markov chain to decorrelate in individual states can contribute considerably to the total MBAR error, highlighting the importance of accurately addressing the effect of sample correlation. The impact of an episodic river flood is intimately linked to its duration. Yet it is still unclear how often should a river be observed to accurately determine the occurrence and duration of extreme events. Here we assess flow statistics along with peak flow event detection and duration as a function of the discharge sampling period for large tributaries of the Mississippi basin using hourly gages over 2010–2022. Median event durations above high quantiles spatially vary from around 2 days upstream to 30 days downstream. Discharge mean, standard deviation, and quantiles can all be estimated within 2.5% error for sampling periods up to 8 days. A minimum temporal sampling 4× (2×) finer than peak flow event median duration is required to detect 95 ± 3% (85 ± 5%) of events and to estimate their duration within 90 ± 5% (75 ± 10%) median accuracy. Our findings have direct implications for future satellite missions concerned with capturing flood events. Analyzing hourly stream gage data in the Mississippi River basin from 2010 to 2022, we calculate that flood events vary widely in duration from upstream (2 days) to downstream (30 days). We show that observing large rivers every few days is sufficient to compute common long‐term river flow statistics within 2.5% error. However, capturing most floods and accurately assessing their duration (within 10% error) requires monitoring at least four times more frequently than the typical duration of these events. This means that if a major flood typically lasts 10 days, the river data should be collected at least every 2–3 days. Our findings have implications for the design of monitoring systems concerned with the accurate capture of floods, including those using Earth orbiting satellites. A too‐weak eddy feedback in models has been proposed to explain the signal‐to‐noise paradox in seasonal‐to‐decadal forecasts of the winter Northern Hemisphere. We show that the "eddy feedback parameter" (EFP) used in previous studies is sensitive to sampling and multidecadal variability. When these uncertainties are accounted for, the EFP diagnosed from CMIP6 historical simulations generally falls within the reanalysis uncertainty. We find the EFP is not independent of the sampled North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Within the same dataset, a sample containing larger NAO variability will show a larger EFP, suggesting that the link between eddy feedbacks and the signal‐to‐noise paradox could be due to sampling effects with the EFP. An alternative measure of eddy feedback, the barotropic energy generation rate, is less sensitive to sampling errors and delineates CMIP6 models that have weak, strong, or unbiased eddy feedbacks, but shows little relation to NAO variability. However, we find that the "eddy feedback parameter" (EFP) used in these studies exhibits large sampling uncertainty that has not previously been taken into account. When accounting for this sampling uncertainty, the EFP in models is generally consistent with reanalysis data. Furthermore, across samples, the EFP correlates with the variability of the NAO, meaning they are not independent, which makes the EFP problematic for understanding the causes of the signal‐to‐noise paradox. Samples with larger NAO variability are diagnosed with a larger EFP, even within the same dataset. An alternative measure of eddy feedback is less sensitive to sampling and better identifies models which have weak, strong, or unbiased eddy feedbacks. Ecological meta‐analyses usually exhibit high relative heterogeneity of effect size: most among‐study variation in effect size represents true variation in mean effect size, rather than sampling error. This heterogeneity arises from both methodological and ecological sources. Methodological heterogeneity is a nuisance that complicates the interpretation of data syntheses. One way to reduce methodological heterogeneity is via coordinated distributed experiments, in which investigators conduct the same experiment at different sites, using the same methods. We tested whether coordinated distributed experiments in ecology exhibit 1) low heterogeneity in effect size, and 2) lower heterogeneity than meta‐analyses, using data on 17 effects from eight coordinated distributed experiments, and 406 meta‐analyses. Consistent with our expectations, among‐site heterogeneity typically comprised <50% of the variance in effect size in distributed experiments. In contrast, heterogeneity within and among studies typically comprised >90% of the variance in effect size in meta‐analyses. However, this difference largely reflected the small size of most coordinated distributed experiments, and was no longer significant after controlling for size (number of studies or sites). These results are consistent with the hypothesis that methodological heterogeneity rarely comprises a substantial fraction of variance in effect size in ecology. We also conducted pairwise comparisons of absolute heterogeneity between coordinated distributed experiments and meta‐analyses on the same topics. Coordinated distributed experiments did not consistently exhibit lower absolute heterogeneity in effect size than meta‐analyses on the same topics. Our findings suggest that coordinated distributed experiments rarely increase uniformity of results by reducing methodological heterogeneity. Bootstrap is a widely applicable computational statistical method. The focus of this paper lies in developing a bootstrap method for linear mixed models under homoscedasticity violation (heteroscedasticity) in variance of errors. We assume that the form of heteroscedasticity is unknown. To generate bootstrap response data as close as possible to the actual response data, we transform the marginal residuals to ensure that the variance of the modified marginal residuals in bootstrap samples is an unbiased estimator for the variance of the response variable in the linear mixed models. The consistency is proved, implying that the parameter estimators by the proposed method are asymptotically unbiased. The simulations are conducted with varying error terms and sample sizes to show improvement of the proposed method in parameter estimation. The simulation results are compared to demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the other considered approaches including the wild method in the heteroscedastic linear mixed models under small samples and performs competitively with the parametric method and both methods outperform the other considered methods in homoscedastic linear mixed models. Misidentification errors in tumor marker tests can lead to serious diagnostic and treatment errors. This study aims to develop a method for detecting these errors using a machine learning (ML)-based delta check approach, overcoming limitations of conventional methods. We analyzed five tumor marker test results: alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), cancer antigen 19-9 (CA19-9), cancer antigen 125 (CA125), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and prostate-specific antigen (PSA). A total of 246,261 records were used in the analysis. Of these, 179,929 records were used for model training and 66,332 records for performance evaluation. We developed a misidentification error detection model based on the random forest (RF) and deep neural network (DNN) methods. We performed an in silico simulation with 1 % random sample shuffling. The performance of the developed models was evaluated and compared to conventional delta check methods such as delta percent change (DPC), absolute DPC (absDPC), and reference change values (RCV). The DNN model outperformed the RF, DPC, absDPC, and RCV methods in detecting sample misidentification errors. It achieved balanced accuracies of 0.828, 0.842, 0.792, 0.818, and 0.833 for AFP, CA19-9, CA125, CEA, and PSA, respectively. Although the RF method performed better than DPC and absDPC, it showed similar or lower performance compared to RCV. Our research results demonstrate that an ML-based delta check method can more effectively detect sample misidentification errors compared to conventional delta check methods. The random batch method provides an efficient algorithm for computing statistical properties of a canonical ensemble of interacting particles. In this work, we study the error estimates of the fully discrete random batch method, especially in terms of approximating the invariant distribution. The triangle inequality framework employed in this paper is a convenient approach to estimate the long-time sampling error of the numerical methods. Using the triangle inequality framework, we show that the long-time error of the discrete random batch method is |$O(\sqrt {\tau } + e^{-\lambda t})$|⁠ , where |$\tau $| is the time step and |$\lambda $| is the convergence rate, which does not depend on the time step |$\tau $| or the number of particles |$N$|⁠. We propose a method to reconstruct sea surface height anomalies (SSHA) from vector surface currents and winds. This analysis is motivated by the proposed satellite ODYSEA, which is a Doppler scatterometer that measures coincident surface vector winds and currents. If it is feasible to estimate SSHA from these measurements, then ODYSEA could provide collocated fields of SSHA, currents, and winds over a projected wide swath of ∼1700 km. The reconstruction also yields estimates of the low-frequency surface geostrophic, Ekman, irrotational, and nondivergent current components and a framework for separation of balanced and unbalanced motions. The reconstruction is based on a steady-state surface momentum budget including the Ekman drift, Coriolis acceleration, and horizontal advection. The horizontal SSHA gradient is obtained as a residual of these terms, and the unknown SSHA is solved for using a Helmholtz–Hodge decomposition given an imposed SSHA boundary condition. We develop the reconstruction using surface currents, winds, and SSHA off the U.S. West Coast from a 43-day coupled ROMS–WRF simulation. We also consider how simulated ODYSEA measurement and sampling errors and boundary condition uncertainties impact reconstruction accuracy. We find that temporal smoothing of the currents for periods of 150 h is necessary to mitigate large reconstruction errors associated with unbalanced near-inertial motions. For the most realistic case of projected ODYSEA measurement noise and temporal sampling, the reconstructed SSHA fields have an RMS error of 2.1 cm and a model skill (squared correlation) of 0.958 with 150-h resolution. Epidemiologic screening programs often make use of tests with small, but nonzero probabilities of misdiagnosis. In this article, we assume the target population is finite with a fixed number of true cases, and that we apply an imperfect test with known sensitivity and specificity to a sample of individuals from the population. In this setting, we propose an enhanced inferential approach for use in conjunction with sampling-based bias-corrected prevalence estimation. While ignoring the finite nature of the population can yield markedly conservative estimates, direct application of a standard finite population correction (FPC) conversely leads to underestimation of variance. We uncover a way to leverage the typical FPC indirectly toward valid statistical inference. In particular, we derive a readily estimable extra variance component induced by misclassification in this specific but arguably common diagnostic testing scenario. Our approach yields a standard error estimate that properly captures the sampling variability of the usual bias-corrected maximum likelihood estimator of disease prevalence. Finally, we develop an adapted Bayesian credible interval for the true prevalence that offers improved frequentist properties (i.e., coverage and width) relative to a Wald-type confidence interval. • Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) can have incomplete or inadequate sampling of the epileptogenic zone (EZ). • Distributed source modeling on the SEEG data can mitigate the challenge of the sampling error. • The sub-sampled data with at least one contact no more than 20 mm away from the EZ gave the comparable EZ detection. Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) can define the epileptogenic zone (EZ). However, SEEG is susceptible to the sampling bias, where no SEEG recording is taken within a circumscribed EZ. Nine patients with medically refractory epilepsy underwent SEEG recording, and brain resection got positive outcomes. Ictal neuronal currents were estimated by distributed source modeling using the SEEG data and individual's anatomical magnetic resonance imaging. Using a retrospective leave-one-out data sub-sampling, we evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of the current estimates using MRI after surgical resection or radio-frequency ablation. The sensitivity and specificity in detecting the EZ were indistinguishable from either the data from all electrodes or the sub-sampled data (rank sum test: rank sum = 23719, p = 0.13) when at least one remaining electrode contact was no more than 20 mm away. The distributed neuronal current estimates of ictal SEEG data can mitigate the challenge of delineating the boundary of the EZ in cases of missing an electrode implanted within the EZ and a required second SEEG exploration. Distributed source modeling can be a tool for clinicians to infer the EZ by allowing for more flexible planning of the electrode implantation route and minimizing the number of electrodes. This manuscript presents a novel scheme to achieve high-resolution laser-radar ranging with a small sample number under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. To reduce the sample number, the Restricted Isometry Property-based optimal multi-channel coprime-sampling (RIP-OMCS) strategy is established. In the RIP-OMCS strategy, the data collected across multiple channels with very low coprime-sampling rates can record accurate range information on each target. Further, the asynchronous problem caused by channel sampling-time errors is considered. The sampling-time errors are estimated using the cross-correlation function. After canceling the asynchronous problem, the data collected by multiple channels are then merged into non-uniform sampled signals. Using data combination, target-range estimation is converted into an optimization problem of sparse representation consisting of a non-uniform Fourier dictionary. This optimization problem is solved using adaptive hybrid re-weighted constraint (AHRC) l1 minimization. Two constraints are formed from statistical attributes of the targets and clutter. Moreover, as the detailed characteristics of the target, clutter, and noise are unknown before the solution, the two constraints can be adaptively modified, which guarantees that l1 minimization obtains the high-resolution range profile and accurate distance of all targets under a low SNR. This study mainly concerns correction for measurement error using the meta‐analysis of Fisher's z‐transformed correlations. The disattenuation formula of Spearman (American Journal of Psychology, 15, 1904, 72) is used to correct for individual raw correlations in primary studies. The corrected raw correlations are then used to obtain the corrected z‐transformed correlations. What remains little studied, however, is how to best correct for within‐study sampling error variances of corrected z‐transformed correlations. We focused on three within‐study sampling error variance estimators corrected for measurement error that were proposed in earlier studies and is proposed in the current study: (1) the formula given by Hedges (Test validity, Lawrence Erlbaum, 1988) assuming a linear relationship between corrected and uncorrected z‐transformed correlations (linear correction), (2) one derived by the first‐order delta method based on the average of corrected z‐transformed correlations (stabilized first‐order correction), and (3) one derived by the second‐order delta method based on the average of corrected z‐transformed correlations (stabilized second‐order correction). Via a simulation study, we compared performance of these estimators and the sampling error variance estimator uncorrected for measurement error in terms of estimation and inference accuracy of the mean correlation as well as the homogeneity test of effect sizes. In obtaining the corrected z‐transformed correlations and within‐study sampling error variances, coefficient alpha was used as a common reliability coefficient estimate. The results showed that in terms of the estimated mean correlation, sampling error variances with linear correction, the stabilized first‐order and second‐order corrections, and no correction performed similarly in general. Furthermore, in terms of the homogeneity test, given a relatively large average sample size and normal true scores, the stabilized first‐order and second‐order corrections had type I error rates that were generally controlled as well as or better than the other estimators. Overall, stabilized first‐order and second‐order corrections are recommended when true scores are normal, reliabilities are acceptable, the number of items per psychological scale is relatively large, and the average sample size is relatively large. We present a non‐Gaussian ensemble data assimilation method based on the maximum‐likelihood ensemble filter, which allows for any combination of Gaussian, lognormal, and reverse lognormal errors in both the background and the observations. The technique is fully nonlinear, does not require a tangent linear model, and uses a Hessian preconditioner to minimise the cost function efficiently in ensemble space. When the Gaussian assumption is relaxed, the results show significant improvements in the analysis skill within two atmospheric toy models, and the performance of data assimilation systems for (semi)bounded variables is expected to improve. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is a promising biomarker, reflecting the presence of tumor cells. Sequencing-based detection of ctDNA at low tumor fractions is challenging due to the crude error rate of sequencing. To mitigate this challenge, we developed ultra-deep mutation-integrated sequencing (UMIseq), a fixed-panel deep targeted sequencing approach, which is universally applicable to all colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. UMIseq features UMI-mediated error correction, the exclusion of mutations related to clonal hematopoiesis, a panel of normal samples for error modeling, and signal integration from single-nucleotide variations, insertions, deletions, and phased mutations. UMIseq was trained and independently validated on pre-operative (pre-OP) plasma from CRC patients (n = 364) and healthy individuals (n = 61). UMIseq displayed an area under the curve surpassing 0.95 for allele frequencies (AFs) down to 0.05%. In the training cohort, the pre-OP detection rate reached 80% at 95% specificity, while it was 70% in the validation cohort. UMIseq enabled the detection of AFs down to 0.004%. To assess the potential for detection of residual disease, 26 post-operative plasma samples from stage III CRC patients were analyzed. From this we found that the detection of ctDNA was associated with recurrence. In conclusion, UMIseq demonstrated robust performance with high sensitivity and specificity, enabling the detection of ctDNA at low allele frequencies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When starting an N -body simulation of an isolated galaxy, it is desirable to select particles from a distribution function to ensure that the model is in equilibrium. Random sampling from a DF is widely used, but results in a set of particles that differs by shot noise from that intended. This paper presents a method to reduce sampling noise that has been developed by the author in a many collaborations over a number of years. The technique has been partly described in past papers, though the ideas have not previously been gathered together, nor have its advantages been clearly demonstrated in past work. Of course, sampling errors can also be reduced by a brute force increase in the number of particles, but methods to achieve the same effect with fewer particles have obvious advantages. Here we not only describe the method, but also present three sets of simulations to illustrate the practical advantages of reducing sampling error. The second version of Kaiser's Measure of Sampling Adequacy (MSA2) has been widely applied to assess the factorability of data in psychological research. The MSA2 is developed in the population and little is known about its behavior in finite samples. If estimated MSA2s are biased due to sampling errors, misleading inferences on the factorability of data are likely to occur. This study investigates the effect of sampling error on MSA2 estimation by systematically examining the accuracy and fluctuations of MSA2 estimates with simulated continuous and ordered categorical data. Features manipulated included the number of factors, number of variables per factor, factor loading, inter-factor correlations, sample size, number of response categories, skewness of variables, and types of correlation analyzed, Pearson and polychoric correlations. Results revealed that the MSA2s were underestimated due to the effect of sampling error. Severely biased MSA2 occurred when analyzing a large number of weakly correlated variables with insufficient participants. The underestimation of MSA2 became worse with categorized data. Polychoric correlations yielded slightly more accurate but relatively unstable MSA2 estimates compared to Pearson correlations. In practice, researchers need to bear in mind the downward bias of MSA2 estimates and interpret the value of sample MSA2s with caution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The high computational expense of peridynamic models remains a major limitation, hindering 'outer-loop' applications that require a large number of simulations, for example, uncertainty quantification. This contribution presents a framework that makes such computations feasible. By employing a Multilevel Monte Carlo framework, where the majority of simulations are performed using a coarse mesh, and performing relatively few simulations using a fine mesh, a significant reduction in computational cost can be realised, and statistics of structural failure can be estimated. The maximum observed speed-up factor is 16 when compared to a standard Monte Carlo estimator, thus enabling the efficient forward propagation of uncertain parameters in a computationally expensive peridynamic model. Furthermore, the multilevel method provides an estimate of both the discretisation error and sampling error, thereby improving confidence in numerical predictions. In today's steady development of e-commerce, improving enterprise competitiveness is a major challenge that e-commerce enterprises need to face. There are problems with incomplete and inaccurate evaluation systems in commonly used competitiveness evaluation systems. To address these concerns, the study establishes a model for evaluating business-to-business relationships by analyzing indicators of competitiveness. It also examines the algorithm process and neural network structure and incorporates them into the evaluation model. The experiment shows that through training the back propagation neural network, it is discovered that the mean square error of the samples is 9.9869e-06 when the training frequency reaches 3200, resulting in the completion of convergence of the back-propagation neural network. The utilization of back propagation neural networks to enhance the evaluation model of enterprise competitiveness has yielded positive outcomes. Suggestions have been proposed to improve the competitiveness of diverse e-commerce enterprises. Covariation judgment underlies a diversity of psychological theories and influences various everyday decisions. Information about covariation can be learned from either a summary description of frequencies (i.e., contingency tables) or trial‐by‐trial experience (i.e., sampling individual instances). Two studies were conducted to investigate the impact of information learning mode (i.e., description vs. self‐truncated sampling) on covariation judgment and related decision. In each trial under the description condition, participants were presented with a contingency table with explicit cell frequencies, whereas in each trial under the self‐truncated sampling condition, participants were allowed to determine when to stop sampling instances and thus the actual sample size. To eliminate sampling error, an other‐yoked (i.e., between‐subject) design was used in this research so that cell frequencies shown in a trial under the description condition were matched with those experienced in a trial under the self‐truncated sampling condition. Experiment 1 showed that the self‐truncated sampling condition led to more moderate covariation judgments than the description condition (i.e., a description–experience gap). Experiment 2 demonstrated further that the same gap extended to covariation‐related decisions in terms of relative contingent preference (RCP). Regressive frequency estimation under self‐truncated sampling appeared to underlie the consistent gaps found in the two studies, whereas the impact of regressive diagnosticity (i.e., the same sample of instances was viewed as less diagnostic under description than under self‐truncated sampling) or simultaneous overestimation and underweighting of rare instances under experience was not supported by the observed data. Ancestral sequence reconstruction (ASR) is a phylogenetic method widely used to analyze the properties of ancient biomolecules and to elucidate mechanisms of molecular evolution. Despite its increasingly widespread application, the accuracy of ASR is currently unknown, as it is generally impossible to compare resurrected proteins to the true ancestors. Which evolutionary models are best for ASR? How accurate are the resulting inferences? Here we answer these questions using a cross-validation method to reconstruct each extant sequence in an alignment with ASR methodology, a method we term "extant sequence reconstruction" (ESR). We thus can evaluate the accuracy of ASR methodology by comparing ESR reconstructions to the corresponding known true sequences. We find that a common measure of the quality of a reconstructed sequence, the average probability, is indeed a good estimate of the fraction of correct amino acids when the evolutionary model is accurate or overparameterized. However, the average probability is a poor measure for comparing reconstructions from different models, because, surprisingly, a more accurate phylogenetic model often results in reconstructions with lower probability. While better (more predictive) models may produce reconstructions with lower sequence identity to the true sequences, better models nevertheless produce reconstructions that are more biophysically similar to true ancestors. In addition, we find that a large fraction of sequences sampled from the reconstruction distribution may have fewer errors than the single most probable (SMP) sequence reconstruction, despite the fact that the SMP has the lowest expected error of all possible sequences. Our results emphasize the importance of model selection for ASR and the usefulness of sampling sequence reconstructions for analyzing ancestral protein properties. The fundamental sampling error is one of the sampling errors defined by Pierre Gy's Theory of Sampling and is related to the constitution heterogeneity of the mineralisation. Even if a sampling procedure is considered ideal or perfect, this error will still exist and, therefore, cannot be eliminated. A key input into Gy's fundamental sampling error equation is intrinsic heterogeneity. The intrinsic heterogeneity of a fragmented lot can be estimated by the "calibrated" formula of Gy, which can be written as a function of the sampling constants K and α. These constants can be calibrated by the standard heterogeneity test, originally developed by Pierre Gy and Francis Pitard. This method is based on the selection of rock fragments, individually and randomly, in an equiprobabilistic way from a lot of particulate material, aiming to estimate the intrinsic heterogeneity of the lot. This test, in addition to demanding time and space, can be influenced by human biases, and is difficult to quantify or measure. Aiming to simplify the test execution and eliminate the variance generated by human biases, a prototype called the intrinsic heterogeneity tester was developed as an automated alternative for heterogeneity testing. This prototype selects fragments from a falling stream, one by one, by means of a predefined laser count. To evaluate the prototype, a study was carried out, using painted chickpeas to simulate mineralisation grades and, sequentially, processing the same lot in the intrinsic heterogeneity tester prototype several times. The statistical and mineral content analysis, and comparisons between the intrinsic heterogeneity tester and the standard heterogeneity test sampling constants and constitution heterogeneities were undertaken. As a result, the authors conclude that the intrinsic heterogeneity tester prototype can be used as an alternative to the manual selection of individual fragments and for estimating the intrinsic heterogeneity of particulate material lots to support sampling protocol optimization. We present new observations of core‐diffracted shear waves which contain anomalous waveforms sampling the lowermost mantle beneath the southern Pacific region. Data in two distinct geometries, one from New Zealand to North America and the other from the Fiji and Solomon Islands to South America, show evidence of postcursor phases. The postcursor delays and move‐outs imply that they are caused by an ultra‐low velocity zone (ULVZ). Beamforming analyses of the observed diffracted postcursors show a strong backazimuthal deviation, suggesting this new ULVZ is likely to have a cylindrical shape similar to broad ULVZs sampled by shear diffracted waves elsewhere. Full‐waveform modeling suggests that the postcursors seen in North America might be due to the previously modeled ULVZ located to the west of the Galápagos, while those seen in South America are due to a previously unknown ULVZ beneath the Southern Pacific. We cannot fit observations in both geometries by a single ULVZ. For the new location, we propose one cylindrical ULVZ model with a radius of 400 km and a shear wave velocity decrease of 20% centered at geographical coordinates (−33.6, 130) close to the Pitcairn hotspot. Despite some uncertainty in the west‐east direction, this new ULVZ observation likely provides another example to support the hypothesis that ULVZs exist at the base of mantle plumes where primordial signatures are observed in the ocean island basalts. Plain Language Summary: We analyze shear waves that diffract along the core‐mantle boundary, called Sdiff, beneath the southern part of the Pacific Ocean. Sdiff waves are very sensitive to the seismic velocity structure of the lowermost mantle just above the boundary. For diffracted phases from several earthquakes and across a range of seismic stations, we observe anomalous waveform signals, which we refer to as Sdiff postcursors, and which arrive up to tens of seconds after the main Sdiff phase. We use the seismic data from many seismic stations to find from what direction the postcursor energy is coming from. We infer the cause of the anomalous postcursors are ultra‐low velocity zones (ULVZs) on the core‐mantle boundary, which are the strongest heterogeneities observed in the lower mantle. Additionally, we compute synthetic data for a range of potential ULVZ models. We find that some of the data can be explained by a previously modeled ULVZ near the Galápagos, but that other data point to a previously unknown ULVZ, beneath the southern Pacific region, although its exact location is somewhat uncertain, particularly in the west‐east direction. ULVZs, like this one, might represent the bases of upwelling mantle plumes that feed the hotspots at the surface. This particular one is in a location roughly beneath several southern Pacific hotspots, where geochemists find primordial isotope anomalies. The High lAtitude sNow Detection and Estimation aLgorithm for ATMS (HANDEL-ATMS) is a new machine-learning (ML)-based snowfall retrieval algorithm for Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) observations that has been developed specifically to detect and quantify high-latitude snowfall events that often form in cold, dry environments and produce light snowfall rates. ATMS and the future European MetOp-SG Microwave Sounder offer good high-latitude coverage and sufficient microwave channel diversity (23 to 190 GHz), which allows surface radiometric properties to be dynamically characterized and the non-linear and sometimes subtle passive microwave response to falling snow to be detected. HANDEL-ATMS is based on a combined active–passive microwave observational dataset in the training phase, where each ATMS multichannel observation is associated with coincident (in time and space) CloudSat Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) vertical snow profiles and surface snowfall rates. The main novelty of the approach is the radiometric characterization of the background surface (including snow-covered land and sea ice) at the time of the overpass to derive the multichannel surface emissivities and clear-sky contribution to be used in the snowfall retrieval process. The snowfall retrieval is based on four different artificial neural networks (ANNs) for snow water path (SWP) and surface snowfall rate (SSR) detection and estimate. HANDEL-ATMS shows very good detection capabilities, POD = 0.83, FAR = 0.18, and HSS = 0.68, for the SSR detection module. Estimation error statistics show a good agreement with CPR snowfall products for SSR >10-2 mm h -1 (RMSE = 0.08 mm h -1 , bias = 0.02 mm h -1). The analysis of the results for an independent CPR dataset and of selected snowfall events is evidence of the unique capability of HANDEL-ATMS to detect and estimate SWP and SSR also in the presence of extremely cold and dry environmental conditions typical of high latitudes. In this article, we develop a new adaptive event‐triggered asymptotic control scheme for strict‐feedback systems with fast time‐varying parameters. To deal with time‐varying parameters with unknown variation boundaries in the feedback path and the input path, we construct three adaptive laws for parameter estimation, two for the uncertain parameters in the feedback path and one for the uncertain parameters in the input path. In particular, two sets of tuning functions are introduced to avoid over‐parametrization. Additionally, an event‐triggering mechanism is embedded in this adaptive control framework to reduce the data transmission from the controller to the actuator. We also introduce a soft sign function to handle the perturbations caused by sampling errors to achieve asymptotic stability and avoid the so‐called parameter drift. The stability analysis shows that the closed‐loop system is globally uniformly asymptotically stable and the Zeno behavior can be excluded. Detrital zircon (DZ) geochronology is based on a multistage, hierarchical sampling process in which sampling errors (statistical variance) and non-sampling errors (sampling bias) are endemic. Most of these errors are related to 1) initial collection of a non-random grab sample (typically from outcrop); 2) processing the grab sample to obtain a non-random grain-size sample of restricted grain size(s) (effectively a processed population); 3) randomly and/or non-randomly selecting DZs (often based on their size, shape, and colour) from the grain-size sample to obtain a hand-picked sample (effectively an analysed population); and 4) randomly and/or non-randomly radiometrically dating only certain DZs (due to limitations of instrument spot size and grain imperfections) from the hand-picked sample to obtain an analysed sample. Claims that hand-picked samples and analysed samples are randomly chosen are questionable, since these samples likely represent haphazard sampling attempting to emulate randomness. Non-randomness has major implications for calculations that determine sample size and inter-sample 'sameness' comparison, as both techniques generally depend on randomly chosen samples. The use of inter-sample comparison is particularly troublesome in that sameness is determined for the analysed sample, which is not representative of the initial grab sample. Yet more bias occurs with a 'leap of inference', the generalization of DZ ages from the analysed sample to the target population (the strata of interest) or to a general population (DZs derived from ultimate and proximate sources). Sampling bias can be reduced by unambiguously defining the sampled population (the population that inferential statistics apply), selecting representative samples (if possible, randomization should be used at every stage in the sampling process), and preserving the representativeness of subsamples by using correct sampling devices such as a microsplitter. Over the years, acceptance sampling plans have been crucial to quality assurance in manufacturing. Sample plans are designed using operating characteristic curve conditions to safeguard producers and customers. We propose a conditional probability-based Bayesian generalized multiple-dependent state sampling technique in this paper. The technique relies on Gamma-Poisson distribution. Other performance indicators and acceptance probability are calculated. Also, the new plan's operational method is discussed. The proposed technique is also compared to current attribute sampling schemes for efficacy. Optimal plan parameters for the plan's economic structure are also generated, adding managerial insights to the suggested plan. The entire cost study showed that the suggested plan is cheaper than existing sample plans under identical conditions. To account for inspection flaws, the plan is adjusted. Objective: Data from DNA genotyping via a 96-SNP panel in a study of 25,015 clinical samples were utilized for quality control and tracking of sample identity in a clinical sequencing network. The study aimed to demonstrate the value of both the precise SNP tracking and the utility of the panel for predicting the sex-by-genotype of the participants, to identify possible sample mix-ups. Results: Precise SNP tracking showed no sample swap errors within the clinical testing laboratories. In contrast, when comparing predicted sex-by-genotype to the provided sex on the test requisition, we identified 110 inconsistencies from 25,015 clinical samples (0.44%), that had occurred during sample collection or accessioning. The genetic sex predictions were confirmed using additional SNP sites in the sequencing data or high-density genotyping arrays. It was determined that discrepancies resulted from clerical errors (49.09%), samples from transgender participants (3.64%) and stem cell or bone marrow transplant patients (7.27%) along with undetermined sample mix-ups (40%) for which sample swaps occurred prior to arrival at genome centers, however the exact cause of the events at the sampling sites resulting in the mix-ups were not able to be determined. This study hybridizes the background error covariance (BEC) of the hourly atmospheric three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVar) in Local Analysis (LA) operated at Japan Meteorological Agency using the flow-dependent BEC derived from the singular vector-based Mesoscale Ensemble Prediction System (MEPS) and the static BEC. The impact of introducing the hybrid BEC into the 3DVar is examined, along with its sensitivities to various factors like the ensemble size that is augmented by using lagged ensemble forecasts, the weight given to the ensemble-based component of BEC, the localization scales, and the use (or not) of the cross-variable correlation. This hybrid 3DVar system can be operated with small additional computational cost because it has no coupling with another ensemble data assimilation system. In sensitivity experiments, this hybrid 3DVar is shown to yield smaller forecast root mean square errors than the pure 3DVar, especially for surface variables. Moreover, the hybrid 3DVar shows a better equitable threat score for strong precipitation. These improvements were greater in the experiments with larger ensemble sizes that were increased by using lagged ensemble forecasts because of the reduced sampling errors in the ensemble-based BEC. These results were sensitive to the weight given to the ensemble-based BEC and the horizontal localization scale, whose optimal values were found to be approximately 0.5 and 100 km, respectively. The longer vertical correlation scale and the cross-variable correlation were also found important to create dynamically-balanced analysis, which is especially true for heavy rain cases. The process capability index is a tool for quality measurement and analysis widely used in the industry. It is also a good tool for the sales department to communicate with customers. Although the value of the process capability index can be affected by the accuracy and precision of the process, the index itself cannot be differentiated. Therefore, the process incapability index is directly divided into two items, accuracy and precision, based on the expected value of the Taguchi process loss function. In fact, accuracy and precision are two important reference items for improving the manufacturing process. Thus, the process incapability index is good for evaluating process quality. The process incapability index contains two unknown parameters, so it needs to be estimated with sample data. Since point estimates are subject to misjudgment incurred by the inaccuracy of sampling, and since modern businesses are in the era of rapid response, the size of sampling usually tends to be small. A number of studies have suggested that a fuzzy testing method built on the confidence interval be adopted at this time because it integrates experts and the experience accumulated in the past. In addition to a decrease in the possibility of misjudgment resulting from sampling error, this method can improve the test accuracy. Therefore, based on the confidence interval of the process incapability index, we proposed the fuzzy testing method to assess whether the process capability can attain a necessary level of quality. If the quality level fails to meet the requirement, then an improvement must be made. Field Oriented Control (FOC) effectively realizes independent control of flux linkage and torque, and is widely used in application of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). However, it is necessary to detect the phase current information of the motor to realize the current closed-loop control. The phase current detection method based on a sampling resistor will cause a measurement error due to the influence of parasitic parameters of the sampling resistor, which will lead to the decrease in PMSM control performance. This paper reveals the formation mechanism of the current sampling error caused by parasitic inductance and capacitance of the sampling resistor, and further confirms that the above error will lead to the fluctuation of the electromagnetic torque output by simulation. Moreover, we propose an approach for online observation and compensation of the current sampling error based on PI-type observer to suppresses the torque pulsation of PMSM. The phase current sampling error is estimated by the proportional and integral (PI) observer, and the deviation value of current sampling is obtained by low-pass filter (LPF). The above deviation value is further injected into the phase current close-loop for error compensation. The PI observer continues to work to keep the current sampling error close to zero. The simulation platform of Matlab/Simulink (Version: R2021b) is established to verify the effectiveness of online error observation and compensation. Further experiments also prove that the proposed method can effectively improve the torque fluctuation of the PMSM and enhance its control accuracy performance of rotation speed. Generative models have the potential to revolutionize 3D extended reality. A primary obstacle is that augmented and virtual reality need real-time computing. Current state-of-the-art point cloud random generation methods are not fast enough for these applications. We introduce a vector-quantized variational autoencoder model (VQVAE) that can synthesize high-quality point clouds in milliseconds. Unlike previous work in VQVAEs, our model offers a compact sample representation suitable for conditional generation and data exploration with potential applications in rapid prototyping. We achieve this result by combining architectural improvements with an innovative approach for probabilistic random generation. First, we rethink current parallel point cloud autoencoder structures, and we propose several solutions to improve robustness, efficiency and reconstruction quality. Notable contributions in the decoder architecture include an innovative computation layer to process the shape semantic information, an attention mechanism that helps the model focus on different areas and a filter to cover possible sampling errors. Secondly, we introduce a parallel sampling strategy for VQVAE models consisting of a double encoding system, where a variational autoencoder learns how to generate the complex discrete distribution of the VQVAE, not only allowing quick inference but also describing the shape with a few global variables. Aim: Spatial sampling bias (SSB) is a feature of opportunistically sampled species records. Species distribution models (SDMs) built using these data (i.e. presence‐background models) can produce biased predictions of suitability across geographic space, confounding species occurrence with the distribution of sampling effort. A wide range of SSB correction methods have been developed but simulations suggest effects on predictive performance are highly variable. Here, we aim to identify the SSB correction methods that have the highest likelihood of improving true predictive performance and evaluation strategies that provide a reliable indicator of model performance when independent test data are unavailable. Methods: A meta‐analysis was used to evaluate the performance of SSB correction methods in studies where there were direct comparisons between corrected and uncorrected SDMs. A simulation model was then developed to test evaluation strategies against a known truth using four common SSB correction methods. Results: Effect sizes from published studies suggest some support for small positive effects of SSB correction on predictive performance when assessed using independent test data, but this was not evident using internal cross‐validation and no single method stood out as consistently effective. Simulations support these findings and show that evaluation using internal test data was generally a poor indicator of the true effect of SSB correction. Methods that adjust models relative to a known driver of SSB produced the largest performance gains, but were also the most inconsistent. Main Conclusions: Correcting SSB in presence‐background SDMs without independent test data to evaluate the effect on model performance requires careful implementation. We recommend clearer documentation of SSB correction effects on SDMs, presenting results from models with and without correction, evaluating effects of different assumptions of SSB implementation on predictions, as well as greater efforts to collect independent test datasets to validate model predictions. Quantifying uncertainty is important to establishing the significance of comparisons, to making predictions with known confidence, and to identifying priorities for investment. However, uncertainty can be difficult to quantify correctly. While sampling error is commonly reported based on replicate measurements, the uncertainty in regression models used to estimate forest biomass from tree dimensions is commonly ignored and has sometimes been reported incorrectly, due either to lack of clarity in recommended procedures or to incentives to underestimate uncertainties. Even more rarely are the uncertainty in predicting individuals and the uncertainty in the mean both recognized for their contributions to overall uncertainty. In this paper, we demonstrate the effect of propagating these two sources of uncertainty using a simple example of calcium concentration of sugar maple foliage, which does not require regression, then the mass of foliage and calcium content of foliage, and finally an entire forest with multiple species and tissue types. The uncertainty due to predicting individuals is greater than the uncertainty in the mean for studies with few trees—up to 30 trees for foliar calcium concentration and 50 trees for foliar mass and calcium content in the data set we analyzed from the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. The most correct analysis will take both sources of uncertainty into account, but for practical purposes, country-level reports of uncertainty in carbon stocks can safely ignore the uncertainty in individuals, which becomes negligible with large enough numbers of trees. This year (2023) marks 140 years since the first publication of a facial soft tissue thickness (FSTT) study. Since 1883, a total of 139 studies have been published, collectively tallying > 220,000 tissue thickness measurements of > 19,500 adults. In just the last 5-years, 33 FSTT studies have been conducted. Herein, we add these data (plus an additional 20 studies) to the 2018 T-Table to provide an update of > 81,000 new datapoints to the global tallied facial soft tissue depths table. In contrast to the original 2008 T-Table, some notable changes are as follows: increased FSTTs by 3 mm at infra second molar (ecm2–iM2ʹ), 2.5 mm at gonion (go–goʹ), 2 mm at mid-ramus (mr–mrʹ), and 1.5 mm at zygion (zy–zyʹ). Rolling grand means indicate that stable values have been attained for all nine median FSTT landmarks, while six out of nine bilateral landmarks continue to show ongoing fluctuations, indicating further data collection at these landmarks holds value. When used as point estimators for individuals with known values across 24 landmarks (i.e., C-Table data), the updated grand means produce slightly less estimation error than the 2018 T-Table means (3.5 mm versus 3.6 mm, respectively). Future efforts to produce less noisy datasets (i.e., reduce measurement and sampling errors as much as possible between studies) would be useful. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In typical machine learning frameworks, model selection is of fundamental importance: commonly, multiple models have to be trained and compared in order to identify the one with the best predictive performances. The aim of this study is to provide a new tool to improve the model selection process, allowing the user to identify the algorithm which significantly outperforms the other candidates. It proposes a robust model selection procedure based on a multi‐aspect permutation test which makes it possible to detect differences in both location and variability between two paired samples of prediction errors. A new extension of the nonparametric combination (NPC) methodology is therefore introduced and is integrated with an appropriate ranking procedure in order to deal with the comparison of C≥2 candidate models. A simulation study is conducted to evaluate the performances of this testing procedure in 2‐sample and C‐sample problems, by generating data from various well‐known distributions and simulating several possible null and alternative scenarios. The adoption of the proposed technique in machine learning model selection problems is then discussed by means of multiple real data applications. These applications confirm what emerges from the simulation study: the introduced NPC‐based approach performs well under several different scenarios and represents a valuable tool for robust machine learning model selection. The Performance Evaluation Matrix (PEM) is an excellent decision-making tool for assessment and resource management. Satisfaction Index and Importance Index are two important evaluation indicators of construction and PEM. Managers can decide whether the service item needs to be improved based on the Satisfaction Index of the service item. When resources are limited, managers can determine the priority of improving the service item based on the Importance Index. In order to avoid the risk of misjudgment caused by sample errors and meet the needs of enterprises' rapid decision-making, this study proposed a fuzzy test built on the confidence intervals of the above two key indicators to decide whether essential service items should be improved and determine the priority of improvement. Since the fuzzy test was relatively complex, this study further came up with fuzzy evaluation values and fuzzy evaluation critical values of service items following fuzzy testing rules. Besides, evaluation rules were established to facilitate industrial applications. This approach can be completed with any common word processing software, so it is relatively convenient in application and easy to manage. For discrete time nonlinear networked control systems, a novel self-triggered adaptive model predictive control (MPC) strategy is developed. Different from the existing self-triggered MPC methods that determine the triggering instants based on the difference between the optimal and real states at one single instant, the proposed approach updates the MPC system according to the differential form of the state error of two consecutive sampling moments to effectively reduce the computation and communication burden while maintaining the ideal control performance. In addition, this paper introduces a new adaptive prediction horizon mechanism to the self-triggered MPC, so that the amplitude of prediction horizon contraction is sufficiently large to further reduce the computational burden of the MPC method. Finally, the recursive feasibility and robust stability of this proposed strategy are proved strictly by theoretical analysis, and the simulation comparison results are shown to verify the proposed framework. This document discusses the estimation of random mobility models (RMMs) using the expectation-maximization (EM) method. RMMs are important for evaluating mobile wireless networks, particularly in the context of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as platforms for airborne communication networks. The study focuses on RMMs formulated as random switching systems and develops a generic method based on EM to estimate the parameters in the random variables. To improve the pulse width modulation (PWM) harmonic suppression effect of the three‐phase VSI‐fed PMSM system, this paper proposed a novel random switching period (RSP)‐Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) technique for the three‐phase power converter. First, the proposed technique replaces the 10‐bit linear feedback shift register pseudorandom number generator (LFSR‐PRNG) with a Tiny Mersenne Twister (MT)‐PRNG to quickly generate high‐quality pseudorandom number sequences. Then, to reduce the sampling error caused by the current ripple, this paper analyzes the sampling timing under different modulation techniques. Based on the interrupted update mechanism of the Infineon AURIX‐TC264, the variable frequency sampling of the RSP‐SVPWM technique is implemented to ensure the best sampling of the motor phase current. Finally, the simulation and experimental results show that the proposed technique can effectively disperse PWM harmonic energy. Meanwhile, the RSP‐SVPWM technique based on variable sampling frequency effectively improves the phase current quality of the PMSM system. Non-response situations are inevitable in sample survey work, and this is also true in dual sampling frame. In view of this, this study proposes alternative imputation techniques to solve the problem of missing data and further suggests an estimate of the population total in dual sampling frame. The properties of the suggested estimator are analyzed, and its empirical results are compared to the entire response situation. The problem of domain generalization is to learn, given data from different source distributions, a model that can be expected to generalize well on new target distributions which are only seen through unlabeled samples. In this paper, we study domain generalization as a problem of functional regression. Our concept leads to a new algorithm for learning a linear operator from marginal distributions of inputs to the corresponding conditional distributions of outputs given inputs. Our algorithm allows a source distribution-dependent construction of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces for prediction, and, satisfies finite sample error bounds for the idealized risk. Resonator networks are ubiquitous in natural and engineered systems, such as solid-state materials, electrical circuits, quantum processors, and even neural tissue. To understand and manipulate these networks it is essential to characterize their building blocks, which include the mechanical analogs of mass, elasticity, damping, and coupling of each resonator element. While these mechanical parameters are typically obtained from response spectra using least-squares fitting, this approach requires a priori knowledge of all parameters and is susceptible to large error due to convergence to local minima. Here we validate an alternative algebraic means to characterize resonator networks with no or minimal a priori knowledge. Our approach recasts the equations of motion of the network into a linear homogeneous algebraic equation and solves the equation with a set of discrete measured network response vectors. For validation, we employ our approach on noisy simulated data from a single resonator and a coupled resonator pair, and we characterize the accuracy of the recovered parameters using high-dimension factorial simulations. Generally, we find that the error is inversely proportional to the signal-to-noise ratio, that measurements at two frequencies are sufficient to recover all parameters, and that sampling near the resonant peaks is optimal. Quantitative analysis relies on pure-substance primary calibrators with known mass fractions of impurity. Here, label-free quantification (LFQ) is being evaluated as a readily available, reliable method for determining the mass fraction of host cell proteins (HCPs) in bioengineered proteins which are intended for use as protein calibration standards. In this study a purified hemoglobin-A2 (HbA2) protein, obtained through its overexpression in E. coli, was used. Two different materials were produced: natural and U15N-labeled HbA2. For the quantification of impurities, precursor ion (MS1-) intensities were integrated over all E. coli proteins identified and divided by the intensities obtained for HbA2. This ratio was calibrated against the corresponding results for an E. coli cell lysate, which had been spiked at known mass ratios to pure HbA2. To demonstrate the universal applicability of LFQ, further proteomes (yeast and human K562) were then alternatively used for calibration and found to produce comparable results. Valid results were also obtained when the complexity of the calibrator was reduced to a mix of just nine proteins, and a minimum of five proteins was estimated to be sufficient to keep the sampling error below 15%. For the studied materials, HbA2 mass fractions (or purities) of 923 and 928 mg(HbA2)/g(total protein) were found with expanded uncertainties (U) of 2.8 and 1.3%, resp. Value assignment by LFQ thus contributes up to about 3% of the overall uncertainty of HbA2 quantification when these materials are used as calibrators. Further purification of the natural HbA2 yielded a mass fraction of 999.1 mg/g, with a negligible uncertainty (U = 0.02%), though at a significant loss of material. If an overall uncertainty of 5% is acceptable for protein quantification, working with the original materials would therefore definitely be viable, circumventing the need of further purification. This paper devotes the optimal design problem for comparing two regression curves estimated from two samples with asymmetric errors. The μ p -optimality criterion is developed under the framework of second-order least squares estimation, and the associated design theory, including the general equivalence theorems and efficiency bounds, is established. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) is used to generate μ ∞ -optimal designs. A simulation study shows that the use of the μ p -optimal designs yields a substantial reduction on part of the design space in terms of the width of confidence bands. The method to estimate contemporary effective population size (Ne) based on patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD) at unlinked loci has been widely applied to natural and managed populations. The underlying model makes many simplifying assumptions, most of which have been evaluated in numerous studies published over the last two decades. Here, these performance evaluations are reviewed and summarized, with a focus on information that facilitates practical application to real populations in nature. Potential sources of bias that are discussed include calculation of r2 (a measure of LD), adjustments for sampling error, physical linkage, age structure, migration and spatial structure, mutation and selection, mating systems, changes in abundance, rare alleles, missing data, genotyping errors, data filtering choices and methods for combining multiple Ne estimates. Factors that affect precision are reviewed, including pseudoreplication that limits the information gained from large genomics datasets, constraints imposed by small samples of individuals, and the challenges in obtaining robust estimates for large populations. Topics that merit further research include the potential to weight r2 values by allele frequency, lump samples of individuals, use genotypic likelihoods rather than called genotypes, prune large LD values and apply the method to species practising partial monogamy. For Paleoclimate data assimilation (PDA), a hybrid gain analog offline ensemble Kalman filter (HGAOEnKF) is proposed. It keeps the benefits of the analog offline ensemble Kalman filter (AOEnKF) that constructs analog ensembles from existing climate simulations with joint information of the proxies. The analog ensembles can provide more accurate prior ensemble mean and "flow‐dependent" error covariances than randomly sampled ensembles. HGAOEnKF further incorporates the benefits of static prior error covariances that better capture large‐scale error correlations and mitigate sampling errors than the sample prior error covariances, through a hybrid gain approach within an ensemble framework. Observing system simulation experiments are conducted for various data assimilation methods, using ensemble simulations from the Community Earth System Model‐Last Millennium Ensemble Project. Results show that using the static prior error covariances estimated from a sufficiently large sample set is beneficial for the traditional offline ensemble Kalman filter (OEnKF) and AOEnKF. HGAOEnKF method is superior to the OEnKF and AOEnKF with and without static prior error covariances, especially for the reconstruction of extreme events. The advantages of HGAOEnKF over OEnKF and AOEnKF with and without static prior error covariances are persistent with varying sample sizes and presence of model errors. Plain Language Summary: Paleoclimate data assimilation (PDA) combines information from the climate simulations and proxy data, aiming to provide an optimal estimate of past climates. The relatively low predictive skill of the climate model and the noisy and sparse paleoclimate proxies have imposed great challenges on PDA. Previous studies have shown that offline ensemble assimilation methods are much more computationally efficient than online ensemble assimilation ones, and the offline analog ensemble can also provide "flow‐dependent" prior error covariances. However, the sample prior error covariances estimated from an ensemble with limited members can be contaminated by sampling errors. Hybridization of the "flow‐dependent" prior error covariances with the static ones can remedy the sampling error, and also infuse better representation of large‐scale error correlations from the static ones. Thus a hybrid gain analog offline ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is proposed, which retains the advantages of the analog ensemble and further adapts the benefits of static prior error covariances. The hybrid gain analog offline EnKF is superior to the traditional offline EnKF and the offline EnKF with analog ensembles.
