1. Blood chemistry reference intervals of captive Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus)

Abstract: Data on blood chemistry values can make fundamental contributions to our understanding of physiological changes. However, there is a lack of information regarding blood chemistry in Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus). Thus, the objects of this study were to determine reference ranges for 29 blood chemistry variables, and to evaluate differences between age groups and between seasons. Blood samples (n = 138) were collected from 44 (20 males, 24 females; age range, 1-15 years) clinically healthy, captive Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) in the Republic of Korea. Young and adult bears showed significantly higher levels of creatinine and total cholesterol, and lower levels of blood urea nitrogen, blood urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio, lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase MB during hibernation compared to during non-hibernation. Adults also showed significantly higher levels of triglyceride, but lower levels of inorganic phosphorus, aspartate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and creatine phosphokinase during hibernation than during non-hibernation. During hibernation, the urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio and levels of alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, and creatine phosphokinase in young bears were significantly higher than in adults, whereas creatinine levels were lower than in adults. During non-hibernation, the urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio and levels of calcium, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase and creatine kinase MB in young bears were significantly higher, whereas creatinine, total protein, albumin, gamma-glutamyl transferase and haemoglobin levels were lower than in adults. The results of this study provide reference values that will aid in understanding the physiology of Asiatic black bears and in assessing the health of these animals in captive environments.

Abstract: In order to improve Super-Kamiokande's neutron detection efficiency and to thereby increase its sensitivity to the diffuse supernova neutrino background flux, 13 tons of $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ (gadolinium sulfate octahydrate) was dissolved into the detector's otherwise ultrapure water from July 14 to August 17, 2020, marking the start of the SK-Gd phase of operations. During the loading, water was continuously recirculated at a rate of 60 m$^3$/h, extracting water from the top of the detector and mixing it with concentrated $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ solution to create a 0.02% solution of the Gd compound before injecting it into the bottom of the detector. A clear boundary between the Gd-loaded and pure water was maintained through the loading, enabling monitoring of the loading itself and the spatial uniformity of the Gd concentration over the 35 days it took to reach the top of the detector. During the subsequent commissioning the recirculation rate was increased to 120 m$^3$/h, resulting in a constant and uniform distribution of Gd throughout the detector and water transparency equivalent to that of previous pure-water operation periods. Using an Am-Be neutron calibration source the mean neutron capture time was measured to be $115\pm1$ $\mu$s, which corresponds to a Gd concentration of $111\pm2$ ppm, as expected for this level of Gd loading. Abstract: The mass of the W boson, a mediator of the weak force between elementary particles, is tightly constrained by the symmetries of the standard model of particle physics. The Higgs boson was the last missing component of the model. After observation of the Higgs boson, a measurement of the W boson mass provides a stringent test of the model. We measure the W boson mass, MW, using data corresponding to 8.8 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected in proton-antiproton collisions at a 1.96 tera-electron volt center-of-mass energy with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A sample of approximately 4 million W boson candidates is used to obtain MW ¼ 80;433:5 T 6:4stat T 6:9syst ¼ 80;433:5 T 9:4 MeV=c2, the precision of which exceeds that of all previous measurements combined (stat, statistical uncertainty; syst, systematic uncertainty; MeV, mega-electron volts; c, speed of light in a vacuum). Abstract: We dedicate this manuscript in memory of a dear friend and colleague Bella Kaufman. The fifth International Consensus Symposium for Breast Cancer in Young Women (BCY5) took place virtually in October 2020, organized by the European School of Oncology (ESO) and the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO). Consensus recommendations for the management of breast cancer in young women were updated from BCY4 with incorporation of new evidence to inform the guidelines. Areas of research priorities as well as specificities in different geographic and minority populations were identified. This manuscript summarizes the ESO-ESMO international consensus recommendations, which are also endorsed by the European Society of Breast Specialists (EUSOMA).

Abstract: We present the development of neutron-tagging techniques in Super-Kamiokande IV using a neural network analysis. The detection efficiency of neutron capture on hydrogen is estimated to be 26%, with a mis-tag rate of 0.016 per neutrino event. The uncertainty of the tagging efficiency is estimated to be 9.0%. Measurement of the tagging efficiency with data from an Americium-Beryllium calibration agrees with this value within 10%. The tagging procedure was performed on 3,244.4 days of SK-IV atmospheric neutrino data, identifying 18,091 neutrons in 26,473 neutrino events. Abstract: This paper presents a low-random noise of 2.6 e-rms, a low-power of 116.2 mW at video rate, and a high-speed up to 960 fps 2-mega pixels global-shutter type CMOS image sensor (CIS) using an advanced DRAM technology. To achieve a high performance global-shutter CIS, we proposed a novel architecture for the digital pixel sensor which is a remarkable global-shutter operation CIS with a pixel-wise ADC and an in-pixel digital memory. Each pixel has two small-pitch Cu-to-Cu interconnectors for the wafer-level stacking, and the pitch of each unit pixel is less than 5 μm which is the world’s smallest pixel embedding both pixel-level ADC and 22-bit memories.

Abstract: The COBAND is a project of an experimental search for the cosmic background neutrino decay [1] – [9] . The existence of the cosmic background neutrino is predicted as a relic of the big bang in the theoretical cosmology. Since the neutrino is found to have mass generations and mixing between them, a heavier neutrino is possible to decay to a lighter neutrino with a far-infrared photon, even though its lifetime is expected to be much longer than the age of the universe [10] . However, neither the cosmic background neutrino nor the neutrino decay is yet established experimentally. Only a lower limit in the order of 10 12 years is given on the heaviest neutrino lifetime. We, thus, search for photons which come from the cosmic background neutrino decays. The photons from the cosmic background neutrino decays are expected to shape a spectrum of a unique signature with a sharp edge at a wavelength of around 50μm depending on the heaviest neutrino mass. To identify the signature against the overwhelming zodiacal emission foreground as well as the cosmic infrared background, the photodetectors are required to have an ability to measure the FIR spectrum around 50pm with sufficient precision. Thus, we aim at developing a photodetector with capability of FIR photon-by-photon spectrometry. We employ superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) sensors in combination with cryogenic amplifiers for signal readout to maximize the potential of STJ.

Abstract: At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton (pp¯) collider, high-mass electron-neutrino (eν) pairs are produced predominantly in the process pp¯→W(→eν)+X. The asymmetry of the electron and positron yield as a function of their pseudorapidity constrain the slope of the ratio of the u- to d-quark parton distributions versus the fraction of the proton momentum carried by the quarks. This paper reports on the measurement of the electron-charge asymmetry using the full data set recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 2001-2011 and corresponding to 9.1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. The measurement significantly improves the precision of the Tevatron constraints on the parton-distribution functions of the proton. Numerical tables of the measurement are provided. © 2021 authors. Abstract: We established an international consortium to review and discuss relevant clinical evidence in order to develop expert consensus statements related to cancer management during the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2-related disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The steering committee prepared 10 working packages addressing significant clinical questions from diagnosis to surgery. During a virtual consensus meeting of 62 global experts and one patient advocate, led by the European Society for Medical Oncology, statements were discussed, amended and voted upon. When consensus could not be reached, the panel revised statements until a consensus was reached. Overall, the expert panel agreed on 28 consensus statements that can be used to overcome many of the clinical and technical areas of uncertainty ranging from diagnosis to therapeutic planning and treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract: International audience; Aquatic ecosystems are chronically exposed to radionuclides as well as other pollutants. Increased concentrations of pollutants in aquatic environments can present a risk to exposed organisms, including fish. The goal of this study was to characterize the effects of tritium, in the context of natural environments, on the health of fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas. Fish were exposed to tritium (activity concentrations ranging from 2 to 23,000 Bq/L) and also to various concentrations of several metals to replicate multiple-stressor environments. Fish were exposed for 60 days, then transferred to the tritium background site where they stayed for another 60 days. Tritium, in the forms of tritiated water (HTO) and organically bound tritium (OBT), and a series of fish health indicators were measured in fish tissues at seven time points throughout the 120 days required to complete the exposure and the depuration phases. Results showed effects of environmental exposure following the increase of tritium activity and metals concentrations in water. The internal dose rates of tritium, estimated from tissue HTO and OBT activity concentrations, were consistently low (maximum of 0.2 μGy/h) compared to levels at which population effects may be expected (> 100 μGy/h) and no effects were observed on survival, fish condition, gonado-somatic, hepato-somatic, spleno-somatic and metabolic indices (RNA/DNA, proteins/DNA and protein carbonylation (in gonads and kidneys)). Using multivariate analyses, we showed that several biomarkers (DNA damages, MN frequency, gamma-H2AX, SFA/MUFA ratios, lysosomal membrane integrity, AChE, SOD, phagocytosis and esterase activities) were exclusively correlated with fish tritium internal dose rate, showing that tritium induced genotoxicity, DNA repair activity, changes in fatty acid composition, and immune, neural and antioxidant responses. Some biomarkers were responding to the presence of metals, but overall, more biomarkers were linked to internalized tritium. The results are discussed in the context of multiple stressors involving metals and tritium. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: Improving accuracy and precision of measurements of organically bound tritium (OBT) activity concentration in environmental samples has become a key aspect of the study of radiological effects by scientists and regulators. Significant quenching effects are known to occur in the measurement of fish samples for OBT using a liquid scintillation counter. In this study, the quench effects of fish and vegetable samples were investigated, as well as the ionic composition of the samples following combustion, neutralization and distillation processes. Furthermore, revised water equivalent factors of various foodstuffs for OBT measurement were calculated using the Health Canada database.

Abstract: Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL)'s Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) site is home to a large nuclear research complex in Canada. CRL's air tritium releases amount to about 1015 Bq/year. The objective of the study was to characterize the spatial footprint of the 60 years of tritium atmospheric releases in surface soil by measurement of organically bound tritium (OBT). Soil OBT activity concentrations were of particular interest because soil represents a long-term tritium reservoir that can act as a historical record of tritium releases into the environment. Soil samples to a 5 cm depth were collected within the CRL site from 2012 to 2014. Each sample was analyzed for tritiated water (HTO) and OBT activity concentrations. The highest HTO and OBT measurements obtained during this study were 154.0 ± 7.8 Bq/L and 180.9 ± 37.3 Bq/L, respectively. A developed OBT map indicated that retained tritium in soil was not related to the distance of sources-term but it was related to the prevailing wind direction.

Abstract: We report on a search for a spin-zero non-standard model particle in proton-antiproton collisions collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at a center-of-mass-energy of 1.96 TeV. This particle, the φ boson, is expected to decay into a bottom-antibottom quark pair and to be produced in association with at least one bottom quark. The data sample consists of events with three jets identified as initiated by bottom quarks and corresponds to 5.4 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. In each event, the invariant mass of the two most energetic jets is studied by looking for deviations from the multijet background, which is modeled using data. No evidence is found for such a particle. Exclusion upper limits ranging from 20 to 2 pb are set for the product of production cross sections times branching fraction for the hypothetical φ boson with mass between 100 and 300 GeV/c2. Abstract: The current Canadian and Romanian model predictions for tritium dose following an atmospheric tritiated hydrogen gas (HT) release is based on a default Canadian Standards Association (CSA) conversion factor of HT to tritiated water (HTO) of 4.3%. The determination of an empirical site specific value for the conversion factor was essential for the CANDU Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Romania to verify if the CSA value is appropriate for use at this site. Given the role of soil characteristics on the conversion of HT to HTO, on-site experiments would provide the best evaluation of the conversion factor. The objective of the study was to define the soil HT to HTO conversion parameters specific to the Cernavoda NPP site. In June 2016, a series of experiments were conducted to meet this objective. First, the in situ deposition velocity of D2 gas, as a surrogate for HT gas, was obtained using an exposure chamber. Diffusion of D2 into the soil was then evaluated based on the measurements of DHO concentrations in the exposed soil. As soil microbes play a role in the conversion of HT to HTO, this work included a microbiological characterization of the soil, which targeted total soil bacteria (cultivable and gene-based) and hydrogen oxidizing bacteria (cultivable and gene-based). The fraction of hydrogen oxidizing cultivable soil bacteria represented 14–20% of the total cultivable bacteria population estimated as 2.8–29.2 × 105 cfu/g of soil. The empirically derived HT to HTO conversion factor was lower than the default value (4.3%). It fell between 0.9% and 2.0%. The default value is therefore more conservative than the Cernavoda site-specific derived value obtained from the study.

Abstract: The effect of preannealing and final reduction on final texture and magnetic induction is examined in 3% Si-Fe strips containing 0.1% manganese and 0.011% sulfur. It is shown that the smaller grain size effect has produced the decrease in total number of the {110} grains and the sharper {110}{001} final texture favorable for the higher magnetic induction in the preannealed strip with a higher final reduction.

Abstract: The effects of intermediate annealing temperature on {110} texture development and magnetic induction after final annealing are examined in 3% silicon steel strips containing sulfur. The high magnetic induction has resulted from the sharp {110}{001} texture and the higher sulfur content, which forms a broad segregation profile with a higher peak value, has resulted in the fewer {110} grains.

Abstract: Tritium entering the aquatic environment can confer a whole body internal radiological dose to aquatic organisms. Multiple stressors inherent in natural environments, however, confound estimates for observable radiation specific responses. To disentangle differences between field and laboratory outcomes to tritium exposures, a multivariate analysis comparing biomarkers for radiation exposure at the cellular level with changes in biological processes within tissues is described for fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas). Over tritium activity concentrations up to 180,000 Bq/L, DNA damage in the field were lower than DNA damage in the laboratory. This finding does not support an increase in morbidity of biota in field exposures. Energy deposited by tritium decay produces oxidised free radicals, yet the biological responses in brain, muscle and liver to oxidative stress differed between the studies and were not related to the tritium. For both studies, DNA damage in gonad and blood increased with increased tritium as did the fluorescence associated with lysosomal function in spleen. The studies differed in spleen phagocytosis activity were, in the laboratory but not the field, activity increased with increased tritium-and was correlatd with lysosomal function (Spearman coefficient of 0.98 (p = 0.001). The higher phagocytosis activity in the field reflects exposures to unmeasured factors that were not present within the laboratory. In the laboratory, DNA damage and lysosomal function were correlated: Spearman coefficients of 0.9 (Comet, p = 0.03) and 0.9 (micronuclei, p = 0.08). In the field, DNA damage by the Comet assay, but not by micronucleus frequency, correlated with lysosomal function: Spearman coefficients of 0.91 (Comet, p 0.001) and 0.47 (micronuclei, p = 0.21). These observations highlight a need for better physiologic understanding of linkages between radiation-induced damage within cells and responses at higher levels of biological organization.

Abstract: International audience; Tritium (3H) is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen. In the environment, the most common form of tritium is tritiated water (HTO). However, tritium can also be incorporated into organic molecules, forming organically bound tritium (OBT). The present study characterized the effects of tritium on the health of the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas. Fish were exposed to a gradient of HTO (activity concentrations of 12,000, 25,000 and 180,000 Bq/L) and OBT using food spiked with tritiated amino acids (OBT only, with an activity concentration of 27,000 Bq/L). A combined exposure condition where fish were placed in 25,000 Bq/L water and received OBT through feed was also studied. Fish were exposed for 60 days, followed by a 60 day depuration period. A battery of health biomarkers were measured in fish tissues at seven time points throughout the 120 days required to complete the exposure and depuration phases. HTO and OBT were also measured in fish tissues at the same time points. Results showed effects of increasing tritium activity concentrations in water after 60 days of exposure. The internal dose rates of tritium, estimated from the tissue free-water tritium (TFWT) and OBT activity concentrations, reached a maximum of 0.65 µGy/h, which is relatively low considering background levels. No effects were observed on survival, fish condition, and metabolic indices (gonado-, hepato- and spleno- somatic indexes (GSI, HSI, SSI), RNA/DNA and proteins/DNA ratios). Multivariate analyses showed that several biomarkers (DNA damages, micronucleus (MN) frequency, brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE), lysosomal membrane integrity (LMI), phagocytosis activity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production) were exclusively correlated with fish tritium internal dose rate, showing that tritium induced genotoxicity, as well as neural and immune responses. The results were compared with another study on the same fish species where fish were exposed to tritium and other contaminants in natural environments. Together with the field study, the present work provides useful data to identify biomarkers for tritium exposure and better understand modes of action of tritium on the fathead minnow.

Abstract: Tritium is most commonly generated as a by-product of nuclear reactors. As such, environmental concentrations are typically only reported near regions of interest, and background concentrations in areas unaffected by anthropogenic disturbance are not well characterized. To provide information on background levels of tritium in the natural environment, tissue-free water tritium (TFWT) and organically-bound tritium (OBT) were measured in the flesh of 106 fish collected within three lakes located at the IISD-Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) in Ontario, Canada in 2014. For the three ELA lakes studied, water tritium (HTO) activity concentration was determined to be below reliably detectable levels (0.6 Bq/L). Fish TFWT was found to be below 0.7 Bq/L, similar to the surrounding water tritium activity concentration. Fish OBT activity concentrations, at below 5 Bq/L, were also very low. Fish size was significantly related to OBT activity in Lake Whitefish and White Sucker from Lake 302, but not in other lakes. Though we observed significant differences in potential tritium exposure to humans among lakes, the levels of tritium reported here are below the Canadian natural background radiation of 1.8 mSv/y. These results provide information on background levels of tritium in freshwater fishes in Canada.

Abstract: International audience; Organically bound tritium (OBT) has become of increasing interest within the last decade, with a focus on its behaviour and also its analysis, which are both important to assess tritium distribution in the environment and dose consequences. After the first OBT International Workshop which was held in France in May 2012, an international working group was created. The expected benefits are the following remove or reduce uncertainty in OBT analysis results, provide better OBT model validation data and better public dose results, increase the number of potential measuring OBT laboratories, validate all of the stages of the procedures based on a larger population and more statistically significant results, and investigate the feasibility of CRM's and RM's production. In this framework, three OBT exercises were organised; the 1st one on potatoes was conducted in 2013 by the Canadian National Laboratories (former AECL) with about 20 participating labs from around the world, the 2nd one on a sediment was organised in 2014 by GAU Radioanalytical (University of Southampton) on a sediment with again about 20 participating labs and the third one on wheat was organised in 2015 by the Commissariat à l’énergie atomique (CEA) with about 25 participating labs. © 2017

Abstract: This paper presents a study of the production of a single W boson in association with one or more jets in proton-antiproton collisions at s=1.96 TeV, using the entire data set collected in 2001-2011 by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at the Tevatron, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9.0 fb-1. The W boson is identified through its leptonic decays into electron and muon. The production cross sections are measured for each leptonic decay mode and combined after testing that the ratio of the W(→μν)+jets cross section to the W(→eν)+jets cross section agrees with the hypothesis of e-μ lepton universality. The combination of measured cross sections, differential in the inclusive jet multiplicity (W+≥N jets with N=1, 2, 3, or 4) and in the transverse energy of the leading jet, are compared with theoretical predictions. © 2018 authors.

Abstract: This study presents a polyethylene beads method for OBT determination in animal tissues and animal products for cases where the amount of water recovered by combustion is limited by sample size or quantity. In the method, the amount of water recovered after combustion is enhanced by adding tritium-free polyethylene beads to the sample prior to combustion in an oxygen bomb. The method reduces process time by allowing the combustion water to be easily collected with a pipette. Sufficient water recovery was achieved using the polyethylene beads method when 2 g of dry animal tissue or animal product were combusted with 2 g of polyethylene beads. Correction factors, which account for the dilution due to the combustion water of the beads, are provided for beef, chicken, pork, fish and clams, as well as egg, milk and cheese. The method was tested by comparing its OBT results with those of the conventional method using animal samples collected on the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) site. The results determined that the polyethylene beads method added no more than 25% uncertainty when appropriate correction factors are used.

30. Extinction Coefficient of Ag Nanofluids Manufactured by Chemical Reduction Method

Abstract: In this study, we prepare the Ag nanofluids synthesized by the chemical reduction method and measure the extinction coef-ficient of those nanofluids at a wavelength of 632.8 nm. The Ag nanofluids are synthesized by the chemical reductionmethod using silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) and sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ) in water and ethylene glycol (EG). For stable disper-sion of Ag particles in the base liquids, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) is added as a surfactant. The extinction coefficient ofmanufactured Ag nanofluids is measured by an in-house developed measurement system at the wavelength of 632.8 nm. Theresults show that the extinction coefficient of water-based and EG-based Ag nanofluids is linearly increased with respect tothe particle loadings. Moreover, it is shown that the extinction coefficient of EG-based Ag nanofludis is higher than that ofwater-based Ag nanofluids. Finally we compare the experimental results with both the Maxwell-Garnett model and Rayleighscattering approximation model, and they demonstrate that the Rayleigh scattering approximation model is reasonably predictthe extinction coefficient of Ag nanofluids using hydraulic diameter of silver nanoparticle.

Abstract: The effects of manganese addition on interfacial segregation kinetics of sulfur and magnetic induction in thin-gauged 3 percent silicon steel are examined. A decline in segregation concentration of sulfur with annealing time was observed in the manganese-added strip at the initial stage whereas the concentration increased with further annealing.

Abstract: Ingestion is one of the most important pathways to consider for calculating tritium dose to human beings. The objective of this study is to determine changes to TFWT and OBT concentrations in food as a result of its preparation for consumption. The contribution of OBT to the total tritium dose can be reduced by the oxidation of OBT during food preparation. The results show that preparation for consumption can result in reductions of up to 46% in TFWT concentration and 54% in OBT concentration in potato, and 22% in TFWT concentration and 57% in OBT concentration in Swiss chard.

Abstract: Recent years have witnessed a growing demand for a wide variety of high-performance industrial robots. In this paper, for accurate gain tuning of a 6-axis articulated industrial robot with reduced noise, a program routine for a dynamic signal analyzer (DSA) using the frequency response method will be programmed using . Then, robot transfer functions can be obtained experimentally using the frequency response method with the DSA program. Data from the robot transfer functions are transformed into Bode plots, based on which an optimal gain tuning will be executed. Gain tuning can enhance the response quality of the output signal for a given input signal during real-time control of the robot. The effectiveness of our proposed technique will be verified by implementation with a (lab-manufactured) 6-axis articulated industrial robot (hereinafter called "RS2") and comparison with the zero position gain tuning, as well as other positions.

35. MEASUREMENT OF C-14 AND HTO WASHOUT RATIOS FOR SNOW

Abstract: Snow washout ratios (WR) for carbon-14 (C-14) and tritiated water vapour (HTO) have been evaluated. Following the establishment of an efficient methodology for handling environmental (small) levels of C-14, WR for C-14 was calculated for the first time (but in a single experiment), with resulting WRC-14 = 3.159 ± 1.396. During 2004–2010 the WR for HTO has been measured in a broad range of meteorological conditions resulting in an average WRHTO = 0.251 ± 0.369. WRHTO has been further analyzed with respect to independent environmental parameters (drivers). No correlation of the WRHTO with precipitation intensity has been observed. A simple empirical relationship between WRHTO and temperature, atmospheric stability and surface roughness was established.

Abstract: The mean expected value of the OBT/HTO ratio (i.e. generic ratio) is derived in this study on the joint basis of a long-term study conducted at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL)'s Chalk River Laboratories (CRL), model simulations targeted at filling gaps in a yet incomplete timeline of CRL measurements and a reference dataset comprised of numerous experiments reported in the literature. Cultivar variability and disparity in site-specific settings are covered by the reference dataset. Dynamical variability caused by meteorology has been a specific target of the long-term experimental campaign at CRL, where the former two types of variability were eliminated. The distribution of OBT/HTO ratios observed at CRL appears to be a fairly good match to the distribution of OBT/HTO ratios from the literature. This implies that dynamical variability appears important in both cases. Dynamics of atmospheric HTO at CRL is comprised of a sequence of episodes of atmospheric HTO uptake and re-emission of plant HTO. The OBT/HTO ratio appears sensitive to the proportion of the duration of these two episodes: the lesser the frequency (and duration) of plume arrivals, the higher the expected mean OBT/HTO ratio. With the plume arrival frequency defined by the typical wind rose, one would encounter a mean OBT/HTO ratio close to 2. It is important to note that this number is seen both in the reference dataset, and in the continuous timeline of HTO and OBT reconstructed from CRL observations by dynamical interpolation (modelling). Many datasets (including that of CRL) targeted at the OBT/HTO ratio are biased high compared to the suggested number. This could be explained by scarce measurements of the low OBT/HTO ratios in the short phase of uptake of atmospheric HTO by the plant.

Abstract: Poly(ethylene-co-isosorbideterephthalate)(PEIT)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/ethylene terpolymer composites were prepared by a melt mixing process. The effects of MWCNT and the ethylene terpolymer of nanocomposites on the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties were investigated. MWCNT and ethylene terpolymer from 1 to 5 phr and 5 wt.% and 10 wt.% were added to the PEIT matrix, respectively. The thermal properties were evaluated by DSC and TGA. The morphology, mechanical properties and electrical characteristics were assessed by FE-SEM, a notched Izod impact strength tester and a surface resistance meter. As a result, we found that the PEIT/MWCNT/ethylene terpolymer composites have higher conductivity and better mechanical properties than neat PEIT resin.

Abstract: The effect of thermal dissipation by adding graphene nano-platelets to two different commercially available thermal dissipation coatings (ceramic coating and powder coating) was studied. Steady state temperatures of each points of LED modules was monitored in a closed system, with an integral photo detection sphere where there is no external air flow. Having eliminated the contributions of thermal conduction and air flow convection, the module with a conventional heat dissipation coatings showed 8-16% enhancement of thermal dissipation compared to that of non-coated LED module. The addition of graphene is shown to have about 3% additional enhancement. By analyzing thermal resistance of each component of the LED module, the improved thermal conductivity of the graphene added coatings contributes to the enhancement of slight improvement with heat dissipation.

Abstract: The need for a less conservative, but reliable risk assessment of accidental tritium releases is emphasized in the present debate on the nuclear energy future. The development of a standard conceptual model for accidental tritium releases must be based on the process level analysis and the appropriate experimental database. Tritium transfer from atmosphere to plants and the subsequent conversion into organically bound tritium (OBT) strongly depends on the plant characteristics, seasons, and meteorological conditions, which have a large variability. The present study presents an overview of the relevant experimental data for the short term exposure, including the unpublished information, also. Plenty of experimental data is provided for wheat, rice, and soybean and some for potato, bean, cherry tomato, radish, cabbage, and tangerine as well. Tritiated water (HTO) uptake by plants during the daytime and nighttime has an important role in further OBT synthesis. OBT formation in crops depends on the development stage, length, and condition of exposure. OBT translocation to the edible plant parts differs between the crops analyzed. OBT formation during the nighttime is comparable with that during the daytime. The present study is a preliminary step for the development of a robust model of crop contamination after an HTO accidental release.

Abstract: The objective of this study is to quantify the relative amounts of exchangeable organically bound tritium (OBT) and non-exchangeable OBT in various vegetables. A garden plot at Perch Lake, where tritium levels are slightly elevated due to releases of tritium from a nearby nuclear waste management area and Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) operations, was used to cultivate a variety of vegetables. Five different kinds of vegetables (lettuce, cabbage, tomato, radish and beet) were studied. Exchangeable OBT behaves like tritium in tissue free water in living organisms and, based on past measurements, accounts for about 20% of the total tritium in dehydrated organic materials. In this study, the percentage of the exchangeable OBT was determined to range from 20% to 57% and was found to depend on the type of vegetables as well as the sequence of the plants exposure to HTO.

Abstract: Within the last ten years there has been increasing interest in tritium behaviour and distribution in the environment. This is based partly on empirical findings that tritium discharged mostly as HTO can become transformed into organic forms in environmental samples. An international workshop was convened in France in 2012 to gather the scientific community interested in organically bound tritium to share their experience and to establish a current state of knowledge. This paper summarises the outcome of the workshop, which aimed to improve skills concerning OBT (Organically Bound Tritium) determination, transfer and behaviour in the environment. In order to improve OBT measurement credibility, it was decided to conduct and promote OBT analysis through inter-laboratory exercises. This practice will reduce uncertainty in OBT analysis results, providing better OBT model validation data and public dose assessments. © EDP Sciences, 2013.

Abstract: 10nm logic technology using Si FinFET is developed for low power and high performance applications. Power-speed gain of 27% compared to 14nm technology node was obtained using four key developments: 1) advanced gate stack engineering enabling 4 multi-Vt devices, 2) 3rd generation Fin technology, 3) highly doped source/drain (S/D), and 4) contact resistance optimization. CVD liner for BEOL process was also applied for better metal fill capability. Finally yield of the smallest ever SRAM with 0.04um2 SRAM bit-cell size was demonstrated.

Abstract: Perch Lake, a small shallow shield lake located on the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) site, contains elevated levels of tritium due to inputs from a nearby nuclear waste management area. The releases have been going on for many years but tritium levels in Perch Lake have been gradually decreasing since about year 2000. Lake water, sediments, aquatic plants, clams and fish were collected during the summer and fall of 2003 and 2013 at three locations in the lake. HTO activity concentrations were measured in all samples and OBT activity concentrations were measured in sediments, plants, clams and fish. In 2003, 2013, HTO activity concentrations in lake water were roughly uniform in time and space, except close to the shoreline where concentrations were fluctuating according to stream water and groundwater tritium levels in streams entering the lake. HTO activity concentrations of biota were similar to concentrations in lake water at the site where they were collected. OBT activity concentrations in biota were not always correlating with the lake water HTO levels. OBT to HTO ratios were found to be less than 1 for aquatic plants, around 1 for clams and fish and above 1 for birds reared on the shore of the lake.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the total WW and WZ production cross sections in pp collision at s=1.96 TeV, in a final state consistent with leptonic W boson decay and jets originating from heavy-flavor quarks from either a W or a Z boson decay. This analysis uses the full data set collected with the CDF II detector during Run II of the Tevatron collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb-1. An analysis of the dijet mass spectrum provides 3.7σ evidence of the summed production processes of either WW or WZ bosons with a measured total cross section of σWW+WZ=13.7±3.9 pb. Independent measurements of the WW and WZ production cross sections are allowed by the different heavy-flavor decay patterns of the W and Z bosons and by the analysis of secondary-decay vertices reconstructed within heavy-flavor jets. The productions of WW and of WZ dibosons are independently seen with significances of 2.9σ and 2.1σ, respectively, with total cross sections of σWW=9.4±4.2 pb and σWZ=3.7-2.2+2.5 pb. The measurements are consistent with standard-model predictions. © 2016 American Physical Society.

49. CFD ANALYSIS FOR HYDROGEN FLAME ACCELERATION IN THE IRWST ANNULUS TEST FACILITY

Abstract: We developed a preliminary CFD analysis methodology to predict a pressure build up due to hydrogen flame acceleration in the APR1400 IRWST on the basis of CFD analysis results for test data of hydrogen flame acceleration in a scaled-down test facility performed by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. We found out that ANSYS CFX-13 with a combustion model of the so-called turbulent flame closure and a model constant of A = 5.0, a grid model with a hexahedral cell length of 5.0 mm, and a time step size of s can be a useful tool to predict the pressure build up due to the hydrogen flame acceleration in the test results. Through the comparison of the simulated results with the test results, we found out that the proposed CFD analysis methodology enables us to predict the peak pressure within an error range of about for the hydrogen concentration of 19.5%. However, the error ranges of the peak pressure for the hydrogen concentration of 15.4% and 18.6% were about 66% and 51%, respectively. To reduce the error ranges in case of the hydrogen concentration of 15.4% and 18.6%, some uncertainties of the test conditions should be clarified. In addition, an investigation for a possibility of flame extinction in the test results should be performed.

50. Design of Throttle Orifices for an Aircraft Door Damper

Abstract: In this study the flow rate-to-pressure difference characteristics of short-tube type damping orifices for an aircraft door damper were investigated by CFD analyses and experiments. As the design parameters of the damping orifice its diameter, inlet and outlet angle, tube length and the viscosity of the working fluid were taken into consideration. The results showed that the discharge coefficient of the orifices are dependant on the inlet and outlet angle and the oil viscosity, while their length plays an little significant role. Although the short-tube type damping orifice was employed to induce a turbulent flow, their discharge coefficient decreases rapidly as the oil viscosity gets higher than 50mm2/s. Therefore, in order to determine the orifice size, satisfying the working temperature range of the door damper, the oil viscosity as well as the friction force on the damper piston should be kept within proper values. For the verification of the CFD analysis results the actual performance of a door damper was measured and compared with them.
