Electroorganic synthesis has become an exciting tool for the asymmetric conversion of pro-chiral compounds. Herein, we introduced a wireless methodology based on bipolar electrochemistry in synergy with the enantioselective capabilities of inherently chiral oligomers to induce an umpolung chirality transfer. This was exemplified by the electro-conversion of a racemic mixture of lansoprazole to an enantio -enriched solution of a single antipode.

Developing chemiresistive devices for the wireless detection of complex analytes has gained considerable interest. In particular, the enantioselective recognition of chiral molecules is still a challenge. Here, we design a hybrid chemiresistive device for the wireless enantioselective discrimination of chiral analytes by combining the enantiorecognition capabilities of an inherently chiral oligomer, that is, oligo-(3,3'-dibenzothiophene) (BT 2 T 4 ) and the insulating/conducting transition of polypyrrole (Ppy). The device is obtained by modifying each extremity of an interdigitated electrode (IDE) with Ppy on the interdigitated area and oligo-BT 2 T 4 on the connection pads. Due to the asymmetric electroactivity triggered by bipolar electrochemistry, the wireless enantioselective discrimination of both enantiomers of tryptophan and DOPA was achieved. A difference in the onset resistance values was obtained for both enantiomers due to a favorable or unfavorable diastereomeric interaction between the inherently chiral oligomer and the antipode of the chiral molecule. Interestingly, such a device showed a wide quantification range, from μM to mM levels. In recent years, transductors of chiral information based on conducting polymers have gained considerable attention. In particular, inherently chiral materials, which allow differentiation between the antipodes of a chiral analyte in terms of energetic variations, are highly desired. In this work, we successfully synthesized a novel inherently chiral oligomer based on an indole-benzothiophene core, namely, 2-([2,2'-bithiophen]-5-yl)-3-(2-([2,2'-bithiophen]-5-yl)benzo[b]thiophen-3-yl)-N-methylindole (BTIndT 4 ). The electrochemical characterization evidences a stabilization of electrogenerated radical cations due to the presence of the indole group, which guides the oligomerization, producing well-ordered polymeric matrices. Furthermore, the in situ electrochemical conductance analysis demonstrates a simultaneous intrachain and interchain transfer of charge carriers. Finally, the highly efficient enantiorecognition capabilities of the antipodes of the oligo-BTIndT 4 films toward the enantiomers of tryptophan and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA), as model chiral analytes, were demonstrated., (© 2024 The Author(s). Chirality is a fundamental and ubiquitous property of nature involved in multiple fields of science. In particular, the possible resolution of the enantiomeric forms of a molecule is crucial in the pharmaceutical, food, and agrochemical industries. The search for efficient, broad-spectrum, and yet simple methods for obtaining enantiomerically pure substances is a current challenge. Enantioselective resolution methods rely on an asymmetric environment that allows the two antipodes of a chiral molecule to be distinguished. In addition to enantiomeric separation techniques, such as chromatography and electrophoresis, new promising approaches involving out-of-the-scheme synergistic effects between chiral selectors (CS) and external stimuli are emerging. BackgroundHaemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a severe complication of infection with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Although the reservoirs of STEC are known, the source of the infection of sporadic cases is often unknown. In 2023, we observed several cases of bloody diarrhoea with STEC infection in children and adolescents returning from vacations.AimWe aimed to explore the association between travel and bloody diarrhoea with STEC infection in children and adolescents.MethodsWe included all children and adolescents with bloody diarrhoea with STEC infection identified in 2023 by the ItalKid-HUS Network surveillance system in northern Italy. We interviewed children's families and sent a questionnaire on recent travels abroad. The exposure time was between 3 days after arrival abroad and 5 days after return home. A self-controlled case series (SCCS) design was used in the analysis.ResultsOf the 43 cases, 11 developed HUS. Twenty-three cases did not travel abroad, while 20 had travelled to several destinations. The incidence rate ratio (IRR) associated with travel to Egypt was 88.6 (95% confidence interval (CI): 17.0-462). Serotype analysis excluded the possibility of a single strain causing the infections. We did not find the source of the infections.ConclusionThere is an elevated risk of acquiring STEC infection with bloody diarrhoea and HUS associated with travel to Egypt. Specific investigations to identify the source are needed to implement effective preventive measures.

In June 2022, a gastroenteritis outbreak occurred in a town in Northern Italy, possibly associated with the ingestion of norovirus from public drinking water. Noroviruses are highly infectious RNA viruses, with high stability in the environment. They are the primary cause of non-bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide, and despite the fact that the disease is mainly self-limiting, norovirus infection can lead to severe illness in the immunocompromised, the elderly and children. Immediately after the notification of the suspected norovirus outbreak, faecal specimens were collected from hospitalised patients, and water samples were collected from public drinking fountains in the affected area, to confirm the presence of norovirus. Norovirus was detected in 80 % (95 % CI 0.58-0.91) of the faecal specimens, and in 50 % (95 % CI 0.28-0.72) of the water samples using RT (reverse transcription) Real-time PCR. The identification of GII genotype in all samples confirmed public drinking water as the source of norovirus contamination. In addition, in one faeces and one water sample, the co-presence of genotypes GI and GII was detected. The strains were typed by sequencing, with most of them belonging to the genotype GII.3. Immediately after the confirmation of norovirus contamination in public drinking water, the local competent authorities applied safety measures, resulting in a decline in number of cases. Moreover, after the application of disinfection protocols in the water plant, the sampling was repeated with negative results for norovirus in the affected area. However, positive samples were found in the neighbouring area (prevalence 10.00 %, 95 % CI 0.02-0.40) and in the water spring (prevalence 50.00 %, 95 % CI 0.21-0.78), suggesting norovirus persistence and spread from the water source. Among inherently chiral selectors of axial stereogenicity, usually resulting in very good enantiodiscrimination performances, the biindole-based family has the additional advantage of very easy functionalization of the two nitrogen atoms with a variety of substituents with desirable properties. Aiming to evaluate the possibility of exploiting such feature to enhance the enantiodiscrimination ability of the archetype structure, a series of three inherently chiral monomers were designed and synthesized, characterised by a 2,2'-biindole atropisomeric core conjugated to bithiophene wings enabling fast and regular electrooligomerization, and functionalised at the nitrogen atoms with an ethyl, a methoxyethyl, or a hydroxyethyl substituent. Nitrogen alkylation was also exploited to obtain for the first time the chemical resolution of the biindole selectors without employing chiral HPLC. The enantiodiscrimination ability of the selector series was comparatively evaluated in proof-of-concept chiral voltammetry experiments with a "benchmark" chiral ferrocenyl probe as well as with chiral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs naproxen and ketoprofen. The large enantiomer potential differences for all probes increased in the ethyl < methoxyethyl ≪ hydroxyethyl sequence of selector substituents, supporting our assumption on the beneficial role of an additional coordination element. An environmentally friendly and sustainable approach was adopted to produce a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) via electropolymerization, with remarkable electrochemical sensing properties, tested in tyrosine (tyr) detection. The 2,2'-bis(2,2'-bithiophene-5-yl)-3,3'-bithianaphtene (BT 2 -T 4 ) was chosen as functional monomer and MIP electrosynthesis was carried out via cyclic voltammetry on low-volume (20 μL) screen-printed carbon electrodes (C-SPE) in ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ((BMIM) TFSI). An easy and rapid washing treatment allowed us to obtain the resulting MIP film, directly used for tyr electrochemical detection, carried out amperometrically. The sensor showed a linear response in the concentration range of 15-200 μM, with LOD of 1.04 µM, LOQ of 3.17 μM and good performance in selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. Tyrosine amperometric detection was also carried out in human plasma, resulting in a satisfactory recovery estimation. The work represents the first use of BT 2 -T 4 as a functional monomer for the production of a molecularly imprinted polymer, with a green approach afforded by using a few microliters of a room temperature ionic liquid as an alternative to common organic solvents on screen-printed carbon electrodes, resulting in a valuable system that meets the green chemistry guidelines, which is today an essential criterion in both research and application field.

Chiral resolution plays a crucial role in the field of drug development, especially for a better understanding of biochemical processes. In such a context, classic separation methods have been used for decades due to their versatility and easy scale-up. Among the many attempts proposed for enantioselective separation, electroassisted methods are presented as an interesting alternative. Herein, we present the use of wirelessly activated hollow tubular systems for the effective, simple, and tunable separation of racemic and enantioenriched mixtures. These double-layered tubular objects consist of an external polypyrrole chassis, a polymer with good electromechanical properties, functionalized in its inner part with an inherently chiral oligomer. The synergy between the electromechanical pumping process of the outer layer and the enantioselective affinity of the inner part induces the system to behave as a miniaturized chiral column. These hybrid objects are able to separate racemic and enantioenriched solutions of chiral model analytes into the corresponding enantiomers in high enantiomeric purity. Finally, these electromechanical systems can resolve mixtures formed by chiral probes with completely uncorrelated molecular structures injected simultaneously into the single antipodes.

Chirality plays a crucial role in different research fields, ranging from fundamental physico-chemistry to applied aspects in materials science and medicine. In this context, enantioselective loading and pumping of chiral analytes for analysis, separation, and cargo delivery applications is an interesting scientific challenge. Herein, we introduce artificial chiral soft electromechanical pumps based on a bi-layer film built up by electrodepositing polypyrrole and an inherently chiral conducting oligomer at its internal surface. The enantioselective device can be driven by bipolar electrochemistry to act as a pump, allowing the selective loading and separation of different chiral analytes injected as pure enantiomers and in racemic form (i.e., doxorubicin, a chemotherapy drug, limonene, carvone, and a chiral ferrocene). Quantitative microbiological risk assessment (QMRA) methodology aims to estimate and describe the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms from animals and food to humans. In microbiological literature, the availability of whole genome sequencing (WGS) data is rapidly increasing, and incorporating this data into QMRA has the potential to enhance the reliability of risk estimates. This study provides insight into which are the key pathogen properties for incorporating WGS data to enhance risk estimation, through examination of example risk assessments for important foodborne pathogens: Listeria monocytogenes ( Lm ), Salmonella , Campylobacter and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli . By investigating the relationship between phenotypic pathogen properties and genetic traits, a better understanding was gained regarding their impact on risk assessment. Virulence of Lm was identified as a promising property for associating different symptoms observed in humans with specific genotypes. Data from a genome-wide association study were used to correlate lineages, serotypes, sequence types, clonal complexes and the presence or absence of virulence genes of each strain with patient's symptoms. We also investigated the effect of incorporating WGS data into a QMRA model including relevant genomic traits of Lm , focusing on the dose-response phase of the risk assessment model, as described with the case/exposure ratio. The results highlighted that WGS studies which include phenotypic information must be encouraged, so as to enhance the accuracy of QMRA models. This study also underscores the importance of executing more risk assessments that consider the ongoing advancements in OMICS technologies, thus allowing for a closer investigation of different bacterial subtypes relevant to human health., (© 2023 European Food Safety Authority. Chemistry on-the-fly is an interesting concept, extensively studied in recent years due to its potential use for recognition, quantification and conversion of chemical species in solution. In this context, chemistry on-the-fly for asymmetric synthesis is a promising field of investigation, since it can help to overcome mass transport limitations, present for example in conventional organic electrosynthesis. Herein, the synergy between a magnetic field-enhanced self-electrophoretic propulsion mechanism and enantioselective redox chemistry on-the-fly is proposed as an efficient method to boost stereoselective conversion. We employ Janus swimmers as redox-active elements, exhibiting a well-controlled clockwise or anticlockwise motion with a speed that can be increased by one order of magnitude in the presence of an external magnetic field. While moving, these bifunctional objects convert spontaneously on-the-fly a prochiral molecule into a specific enantiomer with high enantiomeric excess. The magnetic field-enhanced self-mixing of the swimmers, based on the formation of local magnetohydrodynamic vortices, leads to a significant improvement of the reaction yield and the conversion rate.

Artificial actuators have been extensively studied due to their wide range of applications from soft robotics to biomedicine. Herein we introduce an autonomous bi-enzymatic system where reversible motion is triggered by the spontaneous oxidation and reduction of glucose and oxygen, respectively. This chemo-mechanical actuation is completely autonomous and does not require any external trigger to induce self-sustained motion. The device takes advantage of the asymmetric uptake and release of ions on the anisotropic surface of a conducting polymer strip, occurring during the operation of the enzymes glucose oxidase and bilirubin oxidase immobilized on its surface. Both enzymes are connected via a redox polymer at each extremity of the strip, but at the opposite faces of the polymer film. The time-asymmetric consumption of both fuels by the enzymatic reactions produces a double break of symmetry of the film, leading to autonomous actuation. An additional break of symmetry, introduced by the irreversible overoxidation of one extremity of the polymer film, leads to a crawling-type motion of the free-standing polymer film. Preferential crystallization induced by chiral surfaces is an interesting alternative to isolate enantiopure antipodes. Herein, we take advantage of the outstanding enantiorecognition capabilities of inherently chiral oligomers to induce an enantioselective crystallization process. We exemplify this strategy with two amino acid model molecules, asparagine and glutamic acid, having a completely uncorrelated structure with respect to the template. This illustrates the versatility of the approach with potential applications in the resolution of pharmaceutical compounds.

Rotation is an interesting type of motion that is currently involved in many technological applications. In this frame, different and sophisticated external stimuli to induce rotation have been developed. In this work, we have designed a simple and original self-propelled bimetallic Janus rotor powered by the synergy between a spontaneous electric and ionic current, produced by two coupled redox reactions, and a magnetic field, placed orthogonal to the surface of the device. Such a combination induces a magnetohydrodynamic vortex at each extremity of the rotor arm, which generates an overall driving force able to propel the rotor. Furthermore, the motion of the self-polarized object can be controlled by the direction of the spontaneous electric current or the orientation of the external magnetic field, resulting in a predictable clockwise or anticlockwise motion. In addition, these devices exhibit directional corkscrew-type displacement, when representing their displacement as a function of time, producing time-space specular behavior. Different areas of modern chemistry, require wireless systems able to transfer chirality from the molecular to the macroscopic event. The ability to recognize the enantiomers of a chiral analyte is highly desired, since in the majority of cases such molecules present different physico-chemical properties that could lead, eventually, to dangerous or harmful interactions with the environment or the human body. From an electrochemical point of view, enantiomers have the same electrochemical behavior except when they interact in a chiral environment. In this Feature Article, different approaches for the electrochemical recognition of chiral information based on the actuation of conducting polymers are described. Such a dynamic behavior of π-conjugated materials is based on an electrochemically induced shrinking/swelling transition of the polymeric matrix. Since all the systems, described so far in the literature, are achiral and require a direct connection to a power supply, new strategies will be presented in the manuscript, concerning the implementation of chirality in electrochemical actuators and their use in a wireless manner through bipolar electrochemistry. Herein, the synergy between the wireless unconventional actuation and the outstanding enantiorecognition of inherent chiral oligomers is presented as an easy and straightforward read out of chiral information in solution. This approach presents different advantages in comparison to classic electrochemical systems such as its wireless nature and the possible real-time data acquisition.

The zoonotic hepatitis E virus genotype 3 (HEV-3) causes most autochthonous human hepatitis E cases in Europe, which are due to the consumption of raw or undercooked food products of animal origin. Pigs and wild boars are considered the main reservoirs of this genotype, while rabbits are the reservoir of a distinct phylogenetic group named HEV-3ra, which is classified within the HEV-3 genotype but in a separate clade. Evidence for the zoonotic potential of HEV-3ra was suggested by its detection in immunocompromised patients in several European countries. HEV-3ra infection was found in farmed and feral rabbit populations worldwide and its circulation was reported in a few European countries, including Italy. Furthermore, Italy is one of the major rabbit meat producers and consumers across Europe, but only a few studies investigated the presence of HEV in this reservoir. The aim of this study was to assess the presence of HEV in 328 Italian hares and 59 farmed rabbits collected in 3 Italian macro-areas (North, North-Central, and South-Central), between 2019 and 2021. For this purpose, liver samples were used to detect HEV RNA using broad-range real-time RT-PCR and nested RT-PCR. Using 28 liver transudates from hares, the ELISA test for anti-HEV IgG detection was also performed. Neither HEV RNA nor anti-HEV antibodies were detected. Further studies will be conducted to assess the HEV presence in Italian lagomorphs to establish the role of this host and the possible risk of transmission for workers with occupational exposure, to pet owners and via food., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Microfluidic valves based on chemically responsive materials have gained considerable attention in recent years. Herein, a wireless enantio-responsive valve triggered by bipolar electrochemistry combined with chiral recognition is reported. A conducting polymer actuator functionalized with the enantiomers of an inherently chiral oligomer was used as bipolar valve to cover a tube loaded with a dye and immersed in a solution containing chiral analytes. When an electric field is applied, the designed actuator shows a reversible cantilever-type deflection, allowing the release of the dye from the reservoir. The tube can be opened and closed by simply switching the polarity of the system. Qualitative results show the successful release of the colorant, driven by chirality and redox reactions occurring at the bipolar valve. The device works well even in the presence of chemically different chiral analytes in the same solution. Efficient monitoring of chiral information of bioactive compounds has gained considerable attention, due to their involvement in different biochemical processes. In this work, we propose a novel dynamic system for the easy and straightforward recognition of chiral redox active molecules and its possible use for the efficient measurement of enantiomeric excess in solution. The approach is based on the synergy between the localized enantioselective oxidation of only one of the two antipodes of a chiral molecule and the produced charge-compensating asymmetric proton flux along a bipolar electrode. The resulting clockwise or anticlockwise rotation is triggered only when the probe with the right chirality is present in solution. The angle of rotation shows a linear correlation with the analyte concentration, enabling the quantification of enantiomeric ratios in mixtures where the two antipodes are present in solution. This device was successfully used to simultaneously measure different ratios of the enantiomers of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine and tryptophan. The development of chiral catalysts plays a very important role in various areas of chemical science. Heterogeneous catalysts have the general advantage of allowing a more straightforward separation from the products. One specific case of heterogeneous catalysis is electrocatalysis, being potentially a green chemistry approach. However, a typical drawback is that the redox conversion of molecules occurs only at the electrode/electrolyte interface, and not in the bulk of the electrolyte. The second limitation is that the electrodes have to be physically connected to a power supply to induce the desired reactions. To circumvent these problems, we propose here a complementary approach by replacing macroscopic electrodes with an ensemble of self-propelled redox active microswimmers. In 2019, SARS-CoV-2 was identified as the cause of an easily transmissible disease that was declared as a world pandemic. Foodborne transmission was never reported. However, early studies suggested that food could be involved in SARS-CoV-2 entry in the human gastrointestinal tract leading to possible infection, and highlighting the importance of further studies to inspect possible issues linked to food consumption. In this perspective, this work aimed at monitoring SARS-CoV-2 presence in some food and mains water samples in Northern Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2022). A total of 1806 foods, 112 mains water samples, and 580 swabs on meat and dairy product surfaces were analyzed for SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection by Real-time PCR. All the analyzed samples were negative to viral RNA detection with the exception of one vegetable sample. Even if data on foodborne coronavirus transmission suggested a limited importance of this pathway, the impact of the current pandemic in Northern Italy deserved a rigorous investigation to rule out such possibility. Indeed, gaining insight on all SARS-CoV-2 possible transmission pathways, including the foodborne route, seemed of interest to maintain consumers' confidence and trust in food safety, and for the effective management of the current, and future, possible pandemics.

Torque teno sus virus (TTSuV) is a non-enveloped circular ssDNA virus which frequently infects swine and has been associated with hepatic, respiratory, and autoimmune disorders. TTSuV's pathogenic role is still uncertain, and clear data in the literature on virus reservoirs are lacking. The aims of this study were to investigate the presence of potentially zoonotic TTSuV in wild animals in Northern Italy and to evaluate their role as reservoirs. Liver samples were collected between 2016 and 2020 during four hunting seasons from wild boars ( Sus scrofa ), red deer ( Cervus elaphus ), roe deer ( Capreolus capreolus ), and chamois ( Rupicapra rupicapra ). Samples originated from areas in Northern Italy characterized by different traits, i.e., mountains and flatland with, respectively low and high farm density and anthropization. Viral identification was carried out by end-point PCR with specific primers for TTSuV1a and TTSuVk2a species. TTSuV prevalence in wild boars was higher in the mountains than in the flatland (prevalence of 6.2% and 2.3%, respectively). In wild ruminants only TTSuVk2a was detected (with a prevalence of 9.4%). Our findings shed light on the occurrence and distribution of TTSuV in some wild animal species, investigating their possible role as reservoirs.

Triarylboranes containing linear or angular benzodithiophene moieties and bearing one or two dimesitylboron units were synthesized. The electrochemical and optical features of these compounds were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy while DFT calculations were run to analyze the energetic landscape of these systems. For both linear and angular benzodithiophenes, symmetrical disubstitution leads to the highest photoluminescence yields. The linear benzodithiophene disubstituted with two dimesitylboron units proved to be the most interesting and promising molecule as an electron-transport material for organic electronics owing to its LUMO energy level of -2.84 eV which is close to those of commonly used electron transport materials like bathocuproine or bathophenantroline., (© 2022 The Authors. Straightforward enantioselective analytical methods are very important for drug safety, considering that in certain cases one of the two enantiomers of a chiral molecule might be harmful for humans. In this work, we propose a simple system for the direct and easy read-out of the enantiomeric excess of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) as a model analyte. A conducting oligomer, i.e. oligo-(3,3'-dibenzothiophene), bearing inherently chiral features, is electrogenerated on a polypyrrole film. The resulting freestanding hybrid material is used as a wireless enantioselective actuator in a bipolar electrochemical cell. Combining in a single setup two individual actuators with opposite chiral features allows a direct visual read-out of enantiomeric excess, as the bending amplitude of each of the two actuators is directly correlated with the concentration of the corresponding stereoisomer of the analyte. Bipolar electrochemistry has gained increasing attention in recent years as an attractive transduction concept in analytical chemistry in general and, more specifically, in the frame of chiral recognition. Herein, we use this concept of wireless electrochemistry, based on the combination of the enantioselective oxidation of a chiral probe with the emission of light from a light-emitting diode (LED), as an alternative for an easy and straightforward readout of the presence of chiral molecules in solution. A hybrid polymer-microelectronic device was designed, using an inherently chiral oligomer, that is, oligo-(3,3'-dibenzothiophene) and a polypyrrole strip as the anode and cathode of a miniaturized LED. The wireless induced redox reactions trigger light emission when the probe with the right chirality is present in solution, whereas no light emission is observed for the opposite enantiomer. A key approach for designing bioinspired machines is to transfer concepts from nature to man-made structures by integrating biomolecules into artificial mechanical systems. This strategy allows the conversion of molecular information into macroscopic action. Here, we describe the design and dynamic behaviour of hybrid bioelectrochemical swimmers that move spontaneously at the air-water interface. Their motion is governed by the diastereomeric interactions between immobilized enantiopure oligomers and the enantiomers of a chiral probe molecule present in solution. These dynamic bipolar systems are able to convert chiral information present at the molecular level into enantiospecific macroscopic trajectories. Depending on the enantiomer in solution, the swimmers will move clockwise or anticlockwise; the concept can also be used for the direct visualization of the degree of enantiomeric excess by analysing the curvature of the trajectories. Deciphering in such a straightforward way the enantiomeric ratio could be useful for biomedical applications, for the read-out of food quality or as a more general analogue of polarimetric measurements., (© 2021. A family of inherently chiral electroactive selectors based on the 2,2'-biindole atropisomeric scaffold, of easy synthesis and modulable functional properties, is studied in cascade in two enantioselection contexts. They are at first investigated as probes in enantioselective HPLC, studying molecular structure and temperature effects, and achieving very efficient semipreparative enantioseparation. The enantiomers thus obtained, of remarkable chiroptical features (optical rotation as well as circular dichroism), are successfully applied as selectors in chiral voltammetry in different media for discrimination of the enantiomers of chiral electroactive probes, either by conversion into enantiopure electroactive electrode surfaces by electrooligomerization on glassy carbon substrate (the two monomers with shorter alkyl chains), or as chiral additive in achiral ionic liquid (the monomer with longest alkyl chains). Discrimination is conveniently and reproducibly achieved in terms of significant potential differences for the two enantiomers, specularly inverting either probe or selector configuration. In one case successful discrimination is also observed with the two probe enantiomers concurrently present, either as racemate or with enantiomeric excesses, neatly accounted for by the peak current ratios., (© 2021 The Authors. Numerous artificial micro- and nanomotors, as well as various swimmers have been inspired by living organisms that are able to move in a coordinated manner. Their cooperation has also gained a lot of attention because the resulting clusters are able to adapt to changes in their environment and to perform complex tasks. However, mimicking such a collective behavior remains a challenge. In the present work, magnesium microparticles are used as chemotactic swimmers with pronounced collective features, allowing the gradual formation of macroscopic agglomerates. The formed clusters act like a single swimmer able to follow pH gradients. This dynamic behavior can be used to spot localized corrosion events in a straightforward way. The autonomous docking of the swimmers to the corrosion site leads to the formation of a local protection layer, thus increasing corrosion resistance and triggering partial self-healing., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the causative agent of hepatitis E, an emerging public health infection which has an increasing incidence across Europe. Because of the apparent lack of species barriers, HEV was characterized as a zoonotic agent. Swine are recognized as the main reservoir, but HEV is also found in wild animals such as ungulates, lagomorphs, and bats. Our work aimed at detecting the HEV presence in wild fauna in two hunting areas of Northern Italy (Parma and Sondrio areas) with different environmental and anthropic characteristics to investigate its possible role as reservoir. Liver samples were collected from wild boars, red deer, roe deer and chamois, and viral identification was carried out by One-Step RT Real-time PCR. Positive samples were genotyped, and phylogenetic analysis was performed. The virus was found only in the wild boar population, with different prevalence and subtypes in the two areas (14% HEV3a and 1.2% close to HEV3f in Parma and Sondrio, respectively). Wild ruminants seem otherwise to pose a marginal risk. Given the high pig farm density in the Parma area, and expansion of the wild boar population, continuous monitoring of the strains circulating in wildlife is crucial.

Salmonella and Campylobacter ssp. are bacterial pathogens responsible for most foodborne infections in EU countries. Poultry serves as a reservoir for these pathogens, and its important role in the meat industry makes it essential to develop a rapid detection assay able to provide results in one day. Indeed, the rapid identification of foodborne pathogens is an important instrument for the monitoring and prevention of epidemic outbreaks. To date, Salmonella and Campylobacter screening is mainly conducted through molecular methods (PCR or real-time PCR) performed after 18-24 h long enrichments. In this study, we evaluated short enrichments (0, 2, 4, and 6 h) combined with a colorimetric loop-mediated isothermal AMPlification (LAMP) or real-time PCR to detect Salmonella and Campylobacter in poultry meat contaminated at different concentration levels (10 1 , 10 3 , and 10 5 CFU/g). Our results show that real-time PCR allows the detection of Salmonella and Campylobacter , even after shorter enrichment times than prescribed by ISO references; particularly, it detected Salmonella down to 10 1 CFU/g since T0 and Campylobacter from 10 3 CFU/g since T0. Detection with LAMP was comparable to real-time PCR without the requirement of a thermal cycler and with shorter execution times. These characteristics make colorimetric LAMP a valid alternative when one-day results are needed, improving the timely identification of positive meat batches, even in the absence of specialized instrumentation.

Mammalian orthoreoviruses (MRVs) are emerging infectious agents that may affect wild animals. MRVs are usually associated with asymptomatic or mild respiratory and enteric infections. However, severe clinical manifestations have been occasionally reported in human and animal hosts. An insight into their circulation is essential to minimize the risk of diffusion to farmed animals and possibly to humans. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of likely zoonotic MRVs in wild ungulates. Liver samples were collected from wild boar, red deer, roe deer, and chamois. Samples originated from two areas (Sondrio and Parma provinces) in Northern Italy with different environmental characteristics. MRV detection was carried out by PCR; confirmation by sequencing and typing for MRV type 3, which has been frequently associated with disease in pigs, were carried out for positive samples. MRV prevalence was as high as 45.3% in wild boars and 40.6% in red deer in the Sondrio area, with lower prevalence in the Parma area (15.4% in wild boars). Our findings shed light on MRV occurrence and distribution in some wild species and posed the issue of their possible role as reservoir.

Configurationally stable 5-aza[6]helicene ( 1 ) was envisaged as a promising scaffold for non-conventional ionic liquids (IL)s. It was prepared, purified, and separated into enantiomers by preparative HPLC on a chiral stationary phase. Enantiomerically pure quaternary salts of 1 with appropriate counterions were prepared and fully characterized. N -octyl-5-aza[6]helicenium bis triflimidate ( 2 ) was tested in very small quantities as a selector in achiral IL media to perform preliminary electrochemical enantiodifferentiation experiments on the antipodes of two different chiral probes. The new organic salt exhibited outstanding enantioselection performance with respect to these probes, thus opening the way to applications in the enantioselective electroanalysis of relevant bioactive molecules.

A voltammetric and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) investigation was performed on an inherently chiral oligomer-coated gold electrode to establish its general properties (i.e., conductivity and topography), as well as its ability to discriminate chiral electroactive probe molecules. The electroactive monomer ( S )-2,2'-bis(2,2'-bithiophene-5-yl)-3,3'-bibenzothiophene (( S )-BT 2 T 4 ) was employed as reagent to electrodeposit, by cyclic voltammetry, the inherently chiral oligomer film of ( S )-BT 2 T 4 (oligo-( S )-BT 2 T 4 ) onto the Au electrode surface (resulting in oligo-( S )-BT 2 T 4 -Au). SECM measurements, performed in either feedback or competition mode, using the redox mediators [Fe(CN) 6 ] 4- and [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3- in aqueous solutions, and ferrocene (Fc), ( S )-FcEA, ( R )-FcEA and rac- FcEA (FcEA is N , N -dimethyl-1-ferrocenylethylamine) in CH 3 CN solutions, indicated that the oligomer film, as produced, was uncharged. The use of [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3- allowed establishing that the oligomer film behaved as a porous insulating membrane, presenting a rather rough surface. This was inferred from both the approach curves and linear and bidimensional SECM scans, which displayed negative feedback effects. The oligomer film acquired semiconducting or fully conducting properties when the Au electrode was biased at potential more positive than 0.6 V vs. Ag|AgCl|KCl. Under the latter conditions, the approach curves displayed positive feedback effects. SECM measurements, performed in competition mode, allowed verifying the discriminating ability of the oligo-( S )-BT 2 T 4 film towards the ( S )-FcEA and ( R )-FcEA redox mediators, which confirmed the results obtained by cyclic voltammetry. SECM linear scans indicated that the enantiomeric discriminating ability of the oligo-( S )-BT 2 T 4 was even across its entire surface.

Chiral discrimination is of crucial importance for many applications, including drug cross checking and electronic tongue-type devices. In a typical sensing scheme, an enantiomeric selector is combined with an appropriate transduction mechanism. We propose here a hybrid material composed of an electrically conducting oligomer i.e. oligo-(3,3'-dibenzothiophene) bearing inherently chiral features and polypyrrole as a support, which can undergo electrochemical actuation. The combination of both leads to a freestanding film that is addressable in a wireless way based on the principle of bipolar electrochemistry. The induced redox reactions lead to well-pronounced actuation when DOPA with the right chirality is present in solution as a model analyte, whereas absolutely no electromechanical response is measured for the wrong enantiomer. This constitutes a straightforward and absolute read out of chiral information where the amplitude of actuation is correlated with the concentration of the analyte. Optimization of the scheme results in highly efficient bending and thus opens up new directions in the field of chiral technologies.

Enantioselective electroanalysis, which aims to discriminate the enantiomers of electroactive chiral probes in terms of potential difference, is a very attractive goal. To achieve this, its implementation is being studied for various "inherently chiral" selectors, either at the electrode surface or in the medium, yielding outstanding performance. In this context, the new inherently chiral monomer Naph 2 T 4 is introduced, based on a biaromatic atropisomeric core, which is advantageously obtainable in enantiopure form without HPLC separation steps by a synthetic route hinging on enantiopure 2,2'-dibromo-1,1'-binaphthalenes. The antipodes of the new inherently chiral monomer can be easily electrooligomerized, yielding inherently chiral electrode surfaces that perform well in both cyclic voltammetry (CV) enantiodiscrimination tests with pharmaceutically interesting molecules and in magnetoelectrochemistry experiments.
