Abstract

Abstract Measurement of the ultra-rare K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ decay at the NA62 experiment at CERN requires high-performance particle identification to distinguish muons from pions. Calorimetric identification currently in use, based on a boosted decision tree algorithm, achieves a muon misidentification probability of 1.2 × 10 −5 for a pion identification efficiency of 75% in the momentum range of 15–40 GeV/c. In this work, calorimetric identification performance is improved by developing an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network classifier augmented by a filter. Muon misidentification probability is reduced by a factor of six with respect to the current value for a fixed pion-identification efficiency of 75%. Alternatively, pion identification efficiency is improved from 72% to 91% for a fixed muon misidentification probability of 10 −5.

Abstract

Abstract A sample of 1.3 × 105 K + → π 0 e + νγ candidates with less than 1% background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017–2018. Branching fraction measurements are obtained at percent relative precision in three restricted kinematic regions, improving on existing results by a factor larger than two. An asymmetry, possibly related to T-violation, is investigated with no evidence observed within the achieved precision.

Abstract

Abstract The NA62 experiment at CERN, designed to study the ultra-rare decay K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ \nu \overline{\nu} $$ , has also collected data in beam-dump mode. In this configuration, dark photons may be produced by protons dumped on an absorber and reach a decay volume beginning 80 m downstream. A search for dark photons decaying in flight to μ + μ − pairs is reported, based on a sample of 1.4 × 1017 protons on dump collected in 2021. No evidence for a dark photon signal is observed. A region of the parameter space is excluded at 90% CL, improving on previous experimental limits for dark photon masses between 215 and 550 MeV/c 2.

Abstract The NA62 experiment at CERN targets the measurement of the ultra-rare K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ decay, and carries out a broad physics programme that includes probes for symmetry violations and searches for exotic particles. Data were collected in 2016–2018 using a multi-level trigger system, which is described highlighting performance studies based on 2018 data.

Abstract

Abstract A sample of 2.8 × 104 K + → π + μ + μ − candidates with negligible background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017–2018. The model-independent branching fraction is measured to be (9.15 ± 0.08) × 10 −8, a factor three more precise than previous measurements. The decay form factor is presented as a function of the squared dimuon mass. A measurement of the form factor parameters and their uncertainties is performed using a description based on Chiral Perturbation Theory at O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (p 6).

Abstract The NA62 experiment reports the branching ratio measurement BR K + → π + ν ν ¯ = 10.6 − 3.4 + 4.0 stat ± 0.9 syst × 10 − 11 $$ \mathrm{BR}\left({K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu}\right)=\left({10.6}_{-3.4}^{+4.0}\left|{}_{\mathrm{stat}}\right.\pm {0.9}_{\mathrm{syst}}\right)\times {10}^{-11} $$ at 68% CL, based on the observation of 20 signal candidates with an expected background of 7.0 events from the total data sample collected at the CERN SPS during 2016–2018. This provides evidence for the very rare K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ decay, observed with a significance of 3.4σ. The experiment achieves a single event sensitivity of (0.839 ± 0.054) × 10 −11, corresponding to 10.0 events assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of (8.4 ± 1.0) × 10 −11. This measurement is also used to set limits on BR(K + → π + X), where X is a scalar or pseudo-scalar particle. Details are given of the analysis of the 2018 data sample, which corresponds to about 80% of the total data sample.

Abstract

Abstract A search for the K + → π + X decay, where X is a long-lived feebly interacting particle, is performed through an interpretation of the K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ analysis of data collected in 2017 by the NA62 experiment at CERN. Two ranges of X masses, 0–110 MeV/c 2 and 154–260 MeV/c 2, and lifetimes above 100 ps are considered. The limits set on the branching ratio, BR(K + → π + X), are competitive with previously reported searches in the first mass range, and improve on current limits in the second mass range by more than an order of magnitude.

Abstract

Abstract The NA62 experiment reports an investigation of the K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ mode from a sample of K + decays collected in 2017 at the CERN SPS. The experiment has achieved a single event sensitivity of (0.389 ± 0.024) × 10 −10, corresponding to 2.2 events assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of (8.4 ± 1.0) × 10 −11. Two signal candidates are observed with an expected background of 1.5 events. Combined with the result of a similar analysis conducted by NA62 on a smaller data set recorded in 2016, the collaboration now reports an upper limit of 1.78 × 10 −10 for the K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ branching ratio at 90% CL. This, together with the corresponding 68% CL measurement of ( 0.48 − 0.48 + 0.72 $$ {0.48}_{-0.48}^{+0.72} $$ ) × 10 −10, are currently the most precise results worldwide, and are able to constrain some New Physics models that predict large enhancements still allowed by previous measurements.

Abstract

Abstract The results of a search for π 0 decays to a photon and an invisible massive dark photon at the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS are reported. From a total of 4.12 × 108 tagged π 0 mesons, no signal is observed. Assuming a kinetic-mixing interaction, limits are set on the dark photon coupling to the ordinary photon as a function of the dark photon mass, improving on previous searches in the mass range 60–110 MeV/c 2. The present results are interpreted in terms of an upper limit of the branching ratio of the electro-weak decay π 0 → γ ν ν ¯ $$ {\pi}^0\to \gamma \nu \overline{\nu} $$ , improving the current limit by more than three orders of magnitude.

13. Two-proton emission systematics

Abstract

The simultaneous emission of two protons is an exotic and complex three-body process. It is very important for experimental groups investigating the nuclear stability on the proton drip line to have a simple rule predicting the two-proton decay widths with a reasonable accuracy for transitions between ground as well as excited states in terms of relevant physical variables. In spite of its complexity, we show that the two-proton emission process obeys similar rules as for binary emission processes like proton, alpha and heavy cluster decays. It turns out that the logarithm of the decay width, corrected by the centrifugal barrier, linearly depends upon the Coulomb parameter within one order of magnitude. On the other hand, the universal linear dependence with a negative slope between the logarithm of the reduced width and the fragmentation potential, valid for any kind of binary decay process, is also fulfilled for the two-proton emission with a relative good accuracy. As a consequence of pairing correlations the two protons are simultaneously emitted from a singlet paired state. We evidence that indeed one obtains a linear dependence between the logarithm of the reduced width and pairing gap within a factor of two, giving a good predictive power to this law. It turns out that the diproton and alpha-cluster formation probabilities have similar patterns versus the pairing gap, while in the one-proton case one has a quasi-constant behavior., 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, 36 references

14. Probing Lorentz violation in 2νββ using single electron spectra and angular correlations

Abstract

We show that the current search for Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) in the summed energy spectra of electrons in $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay can be extended by investigating the single electron spectra and the angular correlation between the emitted electrons. We derive and calculate the LIV contributions to these spectra associated with the anisotropic part of the countershaded operator and controlled through the coefficient $\mathring{a}_{\text{of}}^{(3)}$ and discuss possible signatures that may be probed in experiments. First, we show that some distortion occurs in the single electron spectrum, maximal at small electron energies. Then, we show that other LIV effects may be highlighted by analysing the angular correlation spectra and the ratio between the Standard Model Extension (SME) electron spectra and their Standard Model (SM) forms. We found that these LIV signatures depend on the magnitude of $\mathring{a}_{\text{of}}^{(3)}$, manifest differently for positive and negative values of this coefficient, and become more pronounced as the electron energy approaches the $Q$-value. Finally, we propose an alternative, new method to constrain $\mathring{a}_{\text{of}}^{(3)}$ through the measurement of the angular correlation coefficient. Using this method, and considering only statistical uncertainties, we obtain bounds of $\mathring{a}_{\text{of}}^{(3)}$ at the level of present ones, obtained from summed energy spectra. We show that future experiments can improve these limits significantly. Our study is performed for $^{100}$Mo, but the results hold qualitatively for other nuclei that undergo a double-beta decay. Abstract

We investigate the influence of a monochromatic strong laser electromagnetic field on $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ clustering and emission, by analyzing the Fourier components of the time-dependent $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-core realistic potential in the Henneberger representation. It turns out that the resulting potential becomes deformed and the static component is by far dominant beyond the nuclear surface where the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ cluster is formed, while higher Fourier terms are important in the internal region, where the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle probability is hindered by the Pauli principle. This fact, combined with the observation that an $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ cluster lives much longer before its emission than the laser period, allows us the use of the stationary coupled channels approach in the system of coordinates given by the laser beam direction. We predict that the angular distribution of emitted $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particles becomes anisotropic due to the deformation of the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-core potential induced by the laser field, even for the spherical emitter $^{212}\mathrm{Po}$.

Abstract

We investigate the influence of a strong laser electromagnetic field on the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-decay rate by using the Hennenberger frame of reference. We introduce an adimensional parameter $D={S}_{0}/{R}_{0}$, where ${R}_{0}$ is the geometrical nuclear radius and ${S}_{0}\ensuremath{\sim}\sqrt{I}/{\ensuremath{\omega}}^{2}$ is a length parameter depending on the laser intensity $I$ and frequency $\ensuremath{\omega}$. We show that the barrier penetrability has a strong increase for intensities corresponding to $Dg{D}_{\text{crit}}=1$, due to the fact that the resulting Coulomb potential becomes strongly anisotropic even for spherical nuclei. As a consequence, the contribution of the monopole term increases the barrier penetrability by 2 orders of magnitude, while the total contribution has an effect of 6 orders of magnitude at $D\ensuremath{\sim}3{D}_{\text{crit}}$. In the case of deformed nuclei, the electromagnetic field increases the penetrability by an additional order of magnitude for a quadrupole deformation ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{2}\ensuremath{\sim}0.3$. The influence of the electromagnetic field can be expressed in terms of a shifted Geiger-Nuttal law by a term depending on ${S}_{0}$ and deformation.
