Introduction Primary stability is one of the goals of modern implant dentistry and if achieved, reduces treatment time for prosthetic rehabilitation and the number of interventions made in patients mouth. Several companies state as protocol for connical conection implants, a subcrestally positioning. Objective This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of placing a conical connection implant equicrestally and subcrestally on static and loading condition in two types of bone density. Material and method A total of 200 bone cylinders were extracted from femur of pigs, standardized by means of x-rays and computerized microtomography scan (microCT) and separated in low and high density specimens. The implants were placed on the center of the bone cylinders and were evaluated before and after loading by means of microCT and histomorphometry. Result The results showed that placing the evaluated implant subcrestally provided better primary stability and performance on static and loading situations on low and high density bone. Conclusion Placing implant subcrestally improve primary stability outcomes under loading and static situations. Resumo Introdução A estabilidade primária é um dos objetivos da implantodontia moderna e, caso atingida, reduz o tempo de tratamento para a reabilitação protéticas e o número de intervenções realizadas. Diversas empresas preconizam a posição subcrestal no uso de implantes com conexão cônica interna. Objetivo Este estudo in vitro avaliou o efeito do posicionamento de implantes de conexão conica interna sub e equicrestal sob condições estáticas e em função, considerando dois tipos de densidades ósseas. Material e método um total de 200 espécimes de osso extraído do femur de suínos e padronizados por meio de radiografias e microtomografias computadorizadas foram separados em densidade alta e baixa. Implantes foram instalados no centro dos especimes e for a avaliados por meio de microCT e histomorfometria. Resultado Os resultados demonstraram que a colocação de implante subcrestalmente promoveu melhor estabilidade primária e performance em todas as situações, irrespectivamente à densidade óssea. Conclusão A colocação de implantes subcrestalmente melhora a estabilidade primária em todas as situações, sendo indicada quando da utilização de conexões cônicas internas.

This study evaluated the effect of the antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on the osseointegration of immediate implants in a healing situation with greater challenges. The mandibular premolars of eight beagle dogs were submitted to ligature-induced periodontal disease. After 3 months, teeth were extracted and immediate implants were placed in the sockets previously decontaminated by mechanical debridement (MD) or MD+aPDT. Following 12 weeks, the dogs were euthanized and the specimens were analyzed. Histologic and histomorphometric analyses demonstrated significantly better results for the immediate implants decontaminated by debridement associated with aPDT. The sites treated with MD+aPDT led to osseointegration of the immediate implants without evidence of inflammation; conversely, evidence of peri-implantitis was observed where aPDT was not used.

Literature has reported that up to 50% of dental implants may be affected by peri-implantitis, a bacteria-induced chronic inflammatory process, which promotes osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and inhibits bone formation, leading to progressive bone loss around implants. Current evidence points toward an increased risk for the development of peri-implantitis in both obesity/metabolic syndrome (MetS) and diabetes mellitus (DM) conditions relative to the healthy population. Currently, there is no effective treatment for peri-implantitis and the 50% prevalence in MetS and DM, along with its predicted increase in the worldwide population, presents a major concern in implant dentistry as hyperglycemic conditions are associated with bone-healing impairment; this may be through dysfunction of osteocalcin-induced glucose metabolism. The MetS/DM proinflammatory systemic condition and altered immune/microbiome response affect both catabolic and anabolic events of bone-healing that include increased osteoclastogenesis and compromised osteoblast activity, which could be explained by the dysfunction of insulin receptor that led to activation of signals related with osteoblast differentiation. Furthermore, chronic hyperglycemia along with associated micro- and macro-vascular ailments leads to delayed/impaired wound healing due to activation of pathways that are particularly important in initiating events linked to inflammation, oxidative stress, and cell apoptosis; this may be through deactivation of AKT/PKB protein, which possesses a pivotal role in drive survival and eNOS signaling. This review presents an overview of the local and systemic mechanisms synergistically affecting bone-healing impairment in MetS/DM individuals, as well as a rationale for hierarchical animal model selection, in an effort to characterize peri-implantitis disease and treatment.

This study evaluated the response of a nano-hydroxyapatite coating implant through gene expression analysis (runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), alkaline phosphatase (Alp), osteopontin (Opn), osteocalcin (Oc), receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B (Rank), receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (Rank-L), and osteoprotegerin (Opg)). Three-dimensional evaluation (percent bone volume (BV/TV); percent intersection surface (BIC); bone surface/volume ratio (BS/BV); and total porosity (To.Po)) were also analyzed. Mini implants were surgically placed in tibias of both healthy and diabetic rats. The animals were euthanized at 7 and 30 days. Evaluating all factors the relative expression of Rank showed that NANO surface presented the best results at 7 days (diabetic rats). Furthermore the levels of Runx2, Alp, Oc, and Opn suggest an increase in osteoblasts proliferation, especially in early stages of osseointegration. %BIC in healthy and diabetic (7 days) depicted statistically significant differences for NANO group. BV/TV, BS/BV and To.Po demonstrated higher values for NANO group in all evaluated time point and irrespective of systemic condition, but BS/BV 30 days (healthy rat) and 7 and 30 days (diabetic rat). Microtomographic and gene expression analyses have shown the benefits of nano-hydroxyapatite coated implants in promoting new bone formation in diabetic rats.

Recently, the effects of SDD on metalloproteinases have been investigated in the treatment of hypertension. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of SDD on ligature-induced periodontitis in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Methods: Fifty-four adult male rats were divided into three groups: SHR-C, SHR-L and SHR-L-DOX (C - Control; L – Ligature). In group SHR-L-DOX, animals were treated with daily 5 mg/kg SDD administration. In L groups, a ligature remained around mandibular first molars for the first 10 days. Each group was divided for euthanasia at 10 or 21 days. Microtomographic and histometric analyses were performed. Osteoclastogenesis was evaluated by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) assay and gene expression of 84 inflammatory mediators by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) array. Results: Group SHR-L-DOX presented reduced systolic blood pressure when compared with group SHR-L at both 10 and 21 days (p < 0.05). Group SHR-L-DOX showed decreased bone and attachment loss in comparison with group SHR-L at both 10 and 21 days (p < 0.05). SDD treatment reduced the amount of TRAP-positive cells at 10 days (p < 0.05). Group SHR-L-DOX showed a downregulated inflammatory genes profile in comparison with SHR-L at 10 and 21 days. Conclusion: SDD therapy exerted systemic modulatory effect on inflammation with reduced periodontal tissue destruction in hypertensive rats. Objectives This study compared two surgical techniques using acellular dermal matrix (ADM) for the treatment of multiple gingival recessions. Material and methods Twenty patients, with bilateral RT1 gingival recessions, were selected. One side received a modified extended coronally advanced flap (MECAF), and the contralateral side a supra-periosteal flap (TUN). The evaluated parameters were probing depth (PD), relative clinical attachment level, gingival index, gingival recession height (GR), width of keratinized tissue, keratinized tissue thickness, and gingival recession area at baseline and 6 months postoperative. Pain was evaluated weekly, using a visual analog scale (VAS) during first month postoperative. Results Both groups were effective in reducing GR (ΔGR: MECAF 2.28 mm; TUN 1.93 mm), without significant differences. The % of root coverage was numerically superior favoring MECAF (MECAF 61.24%; TUN 56.07%), without significant differences between groups. VAS scale failed to provide differences between groups. Conclusions Both treatment were effective in root coverage and might be valuable for the treatment of multiple gingival recessions. The use of vertical releasing incisions and a flap design including the papillae did not hamper root coverage. Clinical relevance This study compared two techniques for use of ADM in large multiple gingival recessions. Within its limitations, both treatments successfully achieved root coverage and were able to reduce gingival recession. It is expected a partial root coverage when using these techniques in large gingival recessions. The study failed to provide significant differences between groups. The use of modified extended coronally advanced flap may be advisable for the treatment of multiple gingival recessions, specially involving large defects when using ADM, to avoid early matrix exposure.

BACKGROUND This double-blind, randomized, controlled clinical trial assessed the efficacy of multiple sessions of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) as an adjunct to surgical periodontal treatment (ST) in patients with severe chronic periodontitis (SCP). METHODS Sixteen patients with SCP were treated with aPDT+ST (test group, TG) or ST only (control group, CG), in a split-mouth design. aPDT was applied at 0, 2, 7, and 14 postoperative days only in TG. All patients were followed up for 90 days after surgery. The following clinical and microbiological parameters were assessed: clinical attachment level (CAL), probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR), bleeding on probing (BOP), plaque index (PI), and count of 40 subgingival microbial species (checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization). Data were collected at baseline (preintervention), at 60 days (30 days after the end of non-surgical therapy), and at 150 days (90 days after surgery). RESULTS A significant reduction in PD was observed at 150 days for the TG, when compared with the CG (P ˂ 0.05). CAL gain was significantly higher in the TG at 60 and 150 days (P ˂ 0.05). This study aims to investigate the additional influence of multiple applications of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in smokers with chronic periodontitis. Twenty smokers with chronic periodontitis were treated in a split-mouth design study with aPDT adjunct to Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) or SRP. aPDT was performed by using a laser light source with 660 nm wavelength associated with a photosensitizer. The applications were performed in four episodes (at days 0, 2, 7, and 14). All patients were monitored for 90 days. Plaque index, probing depth, clinical attachment level, and bleeding on probing were performed at baseline, 30, and 90 days after the SRP. Gingival crevicular fluid and subgingival plaque samples were collected for immunological and microbiological analysis, respectively. Aim This randomized placebo‐controlled clinical trial evaluated the effect of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (B. lactis) HN019‐containing probiotic lozenges as adjuvant to scaling and root planing (SRP) in patients with generalized chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods Forty‐one chronic periodontitis patients were recruited and monitored clinically, immunologically, and microbiologically at baseline (before SRP) and 30 and 90 days after SRP. All patients were randomly assigned to a Test (SRP + Probiotic, n = 20) or Control (SRP + Placebo, n = 21) group. The probiotic lozenges were used twice a day for 30 days. The data were statistically analysed. Results The Test group presented a decrease in probing pocket depth and a clinical attachment gain significantly higher than those of the Control group at 90 days. The Test group also demonstrated significantly fewer periodontal pathogens of red and orange complexes, as well as lower proinflammatory cytokine levels when compared to the Control group. Only the Test group showed an increase in the number of B. lactis HN019 DNA copies on subgingival biofilm at 30 and 90 days. Conclusion The use of B. lactis HN019 as an adjunct to SRP promotes additional clinical, microbiological, and immunological benefits in the treatment of chronic periodontitis (NCT03408548).

Background The aim of this split-mouth design pilot study in dogs was to assess microbiologic effects of two topical anti-infective treatment protocols on dental implants subjected to ligature-induced peri-implantitis, without use of systemic antibiotics. Methods Eight adult Beagle dogs each received four dental implants in contralateral, edentulated, mandibular jaw quadrants. After 8 weeks, silk ligatures were installed, to be removed after another 8 weeks. After 6 additional weeks, induced peri-implantitis lesions were subjected to either antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) or a topical tetracycline (TTC) hydrochloride (50 mg/mL) solution. Microbiologic samples were collected from the deepest proximal peri-implantitis site in each jaw quadrant before and after treatment. The samples were analyzed using DNA-DNA hybridization checkerboard technique. Results Peri-implantitis induction successfully produced lesions with microbiologic characteristics similar to those found in humans. Overall results showed effective bacterial count reductions for both protocols. aPDT demonstrated major reductions of the red complex, but no statistical differences between groups were observed when adjusted for multiple comparisons. Conclusion aPDT and TTC successfully decontaminated infected implant surfaces. Implant decontamination with aPDT appears to be a viable alternative to TTC in the management of peri-implantitis infection.

The aim of this study is to investigate the use of a porcine-derived acellular dermal matrix (MD) in root coverage procedures combined with extended coronally positioned flap (eCAF), in comparison to the subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) associated with the eCAF. Eighteen adult patients presenting bilateral type 1 gingival recession were randomly assigned to SCTG or MD groups. Clinical and patient-based outcomes were recorded at 3 and 6 months after the surgical procedure. Both groups showed a significant reduction in the mean recession height of 3.33 ± 0.89 mm to 1.24 ± 1.10 mm (MD) and 3.21 ± 0.8 mm to 0.83 ± 0.86 mm (SCTG) without difference between groups. Six patients in the test group and eight in the control group obtained complete root coverage. Implant therapy is a predictable treatment to replace missing teeth. However, the osseointegration process may be negatively influenced by systemic conditions, such as diabetes mellitus (DM). Microtopography and implant surface developments are strategies associated to better bone repair. This study aimed to evaluate, in healthy and diabetic rats, histomorphometric (bone to implant contact = %BIC, and bone area fraction occupancy = %BAFO) and nanomechanical (elastic modulus = EM, and hardness = H) bone parameters, in response to a nanometric hydroxyapatite implant surface. Mini implants (machined = MAC, double acid etched = DAE, and with addition of nano-hydroxyapatite = NANO) were installed in tibias of healthy and diabetic rats. The animals were euthanized at 7 and 30 days. NANO surface presented higher %BIC and %BAFO when compared to MAC and DAE (data evaluated as a function of implant surface). NANO surface presented higher %BIC and %BAFO, with statistically significant differences (data as a function of time and implant surface). NANO surface depicted higher EM and H values, when compared to machined and DAE surfaces (data as a function of time and implant surface). Nano-hydroxyapatite coated implants presented promising biomechanical results and could be an important tool to compensate impaired bone healing reported in diabetics.

The non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL) is commonly produced by improper toothbrushing techniques, occlusion trauma, anatomic mal-positioned teeth, and acid erosion, thus sharing the same etiology of gingival recession (GR). The association of a graft to the coronally advanced flap had demonstrated the best long-term outcome for root coverage (RC). However, substitutes for the autogenous graft must be studied. This split-mouth clinical trial investigates the RC and the increase in keratinized tissue (KT) when comparing RC of NCCLs associated with GR with intact roots using an extended coronally advanced flap (ECAF) associated with the acellular dermal matrix graft (ADMG), a connective tissue replacement graft. Seventeen individuals with bilateral GR were included in the study. One side had a NCCL (TG) and the opposite root was intact (CG). All patients were treated with the ECDF associated with ADMG. All clinical parameters were assessed at baseline and 6 months postoperative. Root coverage means (CG, 69.5 ± 19 and TG. 72.2 ± 16.5; p value = 0.849570) were not significantly different between control and test groups. In addition, the KT had an increase in the follow-up period for both groups. GR associated with NCCLs can be successfully treated with the ECDF and ADMG. Patients frequently search for GR treatment due to cervical wear, root sensitivity, and compromising aesthetics. The NCCL participates with the same issues. The present study contributes to the literature that GR associated with NCCLs can be successfully treated with the ECAF and the ADMG.

The high success range obtained with the implant-supported restorations has improved its applicability on routine of the daily clinical practice. This elevated percentage of success is related to the previous pre-clinical data obtained from animal and in vitro studies that evaluated the impact of implant surface topographies on bone tissue. However, the histological evaluation of human bone tissue is scarce. Therefore, the aim of this review is to depict an actual panorama of the data available on boneto- implant contact (BIC) of retrieved implants from human jaws. Some aspects of implant surface topography as well as systemic conditions as osteoporosis and smoking habit were demonstrated to have a strong impact, suggesting that the data obtained from human bone tissue is still valuable for the better understanding of the osseointegration process. This article also highlighted that most data in humans are difficult to interpret, due to the lack of detailed information about the surfaces found in retrieved implants. Without the definition of the surface characteristics, it is difficult to link exactly the surface patterns to specific clinical observations, and all observations remain de facto incomplete. As a conclusion, data from implants retrieved from human jaws are very important for our understanding, however the studies remain scarce and data is fragmented. This important approach should be improved, completed and developed in the future.

Although priority is often given to treat the cancer itself, focus should also be directed to prevention and improvement of oral complications that may occur as a result of cancer and/or its treatment. This study compares periodontal treatment results in healthy patients and patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy by monitoring clinical conditions and C-reactive-protein (CRP) levels.Thirty-five participants were allocated to one of two groups: patients with periodontitis (P) (n = 18) and patients with breast cancer and periodontitis (CAN/P) (n = 17). The following clinical parameters were assessed at baseline and 45, 90, and 180 days after non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT): 1) probing depth (PD); 2) clinical attachment level (CAL); 3) plaque index (PI); 4) gingival index (GI); 5) CRP; and 6) complete blood count. Clinical parameters and CRP levels were statistically analyzed.P and CAN/P groups presented a statistically significant decrease in PD after NSPT at 45, 90, and 180 days compared with baseline (P0.05). There was a CAL gain in the P group and a significant reduction in PI and GI at 45, 90, and 180 days for both groups (P0.05). At 180 days after NSPT treatment, the CAN/P group showed a higher number of residual pockets (P0.05) compared with the P group (46.48 ± 26.80 and 7.58 ± 7.40, respectively). The P group demonstrated a significant reduction in CRP levels at 45 and 180 days after NSPT compared with baseline (P0.05), whereas this reduction was not observed in the CAN/P group.Patients with breast cancer who were undergoing chemotherapy responded to periodontal non-surgical therapy, although with less favorable results than patients with periodontitis without cancer, and may require additional or adjunctive periodontal treatments.

Aim This double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study compared multiple applications of the antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) treatment protocol, to systemic doxycycline as adjuvant to scaling and root planing (SRP) on type 2 diabetic patients on clinical, systemic and immune-inflammatory outcomes. Materials and Methods Thirty patients with Hba1c >7% were allocated in two groups, SRP + Doxy (n = 15) using systemic doxycycline 100 mg/day (14 days) and SRP + aPDT (n = 15) with multiple applications (0, 3, 7 and 14 days). Primary outcome was glycated haemoglobin levels (HbA1c). Clinical parameters: plaque score (PS), bleeding on probe, probing depth, suppuration, gingival recession, and clinical attachment level, percentage of pockets with desired clinical endpoint were measured at baseline and 3 months after therapy. Cytokine profile was assessed at 0, 1 and 3 month to measure IL1-β, TNF-α and TGF-β on gingival crevicular fluid. Results No significant difference was detected on HbA1c, between treatments. The SRP + aPDT group showed advantage on reducing moderate pockets in single-rooted teeth at 3 months. SRP + aPDT presented better results at 3 months on IL1-β levels. There were no significant differences between TNF-α and TGF-β. Conclusions Both treatments improved clinical and systemic outcomes (Hba1c). SRP + aPDT performed better in moderate probing pocket depth on single-rooted teeth, reduced favourably inflammation in short term, and may be an alternative to systemic antibiotics. Objective: To monitor early periodontal disease progression and to investigate clinical and molecular profile of inflamed sites by means of crevicular fluid and gingival biopsy analysis. Methodology: Eighty-one samples of twenty-seven periodontitis subjects and periodontally healthy individuals were collected for the study. Measurements of clinical parameters were recorded at day −15, baseline and 2 months after basic periodontal treatment aiming at monitoring early variations ofthe clinical attachment level. Background The aim of the present study was to evaluate the methylation pattern in the suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 (SOCS1) gene in smokers and non-smokers with chronic periodontitis (CP). Methods Methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed to determine the methylation status of the SOCS1 promoter in 45 saliva samples from smokers and non-smokers with CP. Results Cells from the saliva of CP patients who smoked were 7.08 times more likely to have a methylated SOCS1 promoter than cells from the saliva of non-smoking patients. Conclusions SOCS1 gene promoter methylation, with its potential effects on the expression of this gene, seems to be a consequence of exposure to tobacco and not to periodontal disease. Further studies are needed to elucidate the relationship between the epigenetic control of immune response gene expression, exposure to environmental factors, and the development, progression, and prognosis of CP.

Aggressive periodontitis, a distinct clinical entity of periodontal disease, is characterized by a pronounced episodic and rapid destruction of periodontal tissues and may result in rapid and early loss of teeth. Some studies have shown that conventional mechanical debridement together with oral hygiene is often not sufficient to disease control. Recent studies of this condition have shown beneficial effects of auxiliary therapies or adjuncts such as the administration of systemic and locally antimicrobials. Among the local adjuncts, the literature presents antiseptics, antibiotics and photodynamic therapy. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory represent systemic adjuncts. Regardless of the results presented by each of them, the difficulty of establishing a single protocol for all cases is recognized depending on the individual response shown by each patient. The aim of the present study was to review the current results about chemical adjuncts administration associated with conventional treatment in cases of aggressive periodontitis and suggest clinical protocols.

Objective: To evaluate the use of a synthetic bone substitute covered with a collagen membrane for ridge preservation after tooth extraction, by clinical and tomographic analysis. Material and Methods: Fifteen patients, presenting at least two maxillary anterior teeth indicated for extraction, were selected: in the test group (TG), post-extraction sockets were filled by a synthetic bone substitute; in the control group (CG), by blood clot. In both groups, the sockets were covered by a collagen membrane. Cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) scans were acquired immediately after and 6 months post-surgically, and horizontal and vertical dimensional bone changes were quantified. Results: Transurgical clinical analysis presented no statistically significant differences between TG and CG (p >.05). CBCT intragroup evaluation presented statistically significant reduction for the buccal alveolar measurement (TG = 1.58 mm or 21.82%, and CG = 1.66 mm or 24.08%) and horizontal cervical measurement (TG = 0.55 mm or 8.30% and CG = 1.30 mm or 17.68%), and not significant for palatal alveolar measurement (TG = 0.44 mm or 3.42% and CG = 0.26 mm or 3.89%). Tiludronic acid (TIL) presents antiresorptive and anti-inflammatory properties and has not been evaluated in the periodontitis-diabetes mellitus (DM) association to date, to the best knowledge of the authors. This study evaluates effects of local administration of TIL on experimental periodontitis (EP) in rats with streptozotocin-induced DM.Thirty-two animals (Rattus norvegicus albinus, Wistar) were divided into groups DM/C (Control), DM/EP, DM/EP/TIL1, and DM/EP/TIL3. In EP groups, a ligature was placed around mandibular first molars. In groups DM/EP/TIL1 and DM/EP/TIL3, TIL solutions (1 and 3 mg/kg, respectively) were injected into the gingival tissue of mandibular molars every other day for 10 days, until euthanasia. Periodontal tissues were analyzed by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT), histomorphometry, immunohistochemistry (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase [TRAP], receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand [RANKL], osteoprotegerin, cleaved caspase 3), and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (interleukin [IL]-1β, vascular endothelial growth factor [VEGF]).In micro-CT analyses, groups DM/EP/TIL1 and DM/EP/TIL3 presented reduced alveolar bone resorption (P 0.05). Group DM/EP/TIL3 presented decreased attachment loss (P 0.05). The amount of TRAP-positive multinucleated cells was decreased in TIL groups (P 0.05). Group DM/EP/TIL3 presented a lower immunolabeling pattern for RANKL (P 0.05). TIL treatment decreased genic expression of IL-1β, and in group DM/EP/TIL3, expression of VEGF was increased (P 0.05).Local administration of TIL promoted a protective effect against tissue destruction in EP in diabetic rats, and the dosage of 3 mg/kg of TIL promoted the best results regarding its antiresorptive and anti-inflammatory effects.

Background Studies suggest that smokers present more or greater numbers of potential periodontal pathogens than non-smokers. The aim of this study was to investigate the microbiologic effects of adjunctive aPDT on nonsurgical periodontal treatment in smokers with chronic periodontitis (CP). Methods Twenty smokers with CP had two contralateral teeth randomly assigned in a split-mouth design to receive SRP (CG) or SRP + a single episode of aPDT (TG), with a diode laser and a phenothiazine photosensitizer. Levels of 40 subgingival species were measured using checkerboard DNA–DNA hybridization at baseline and 1, 4 and 12 weeks after periodontal treatment. Results All 40 bacterial species evaluated were detected in different levels at baseline, with no statistic significant differences between groups. After periodontal treatment, the levels of some bacterial species decreased, while some other species presented an increase. Despite this variation, the statistical analysis was not able to identify significant differences neither at intragroup nor at intergroup comparisons. Conclusion Periodontal treatment with SRP or SRP + aPDT was not able to reduce levels of 40 subgingival species in smokers with CP. These outcomes indicate that smoking impairs periodontal healing after nonsurgical treatment even associated with aPDT.

Background Several approaches have been used to counteract alveolar bone resorption after tooth extraction. Purpose The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of gingival thickness and bone grafting on buccal bone remodeling in extraction sockets with thin buccal bone, using a flapless approach. Materials and methods The gingiva of 8 dogs was thinned at one side of the mandible and mandibular premolars were extracted without flaps. The sockets were randomly assigned to the test group (thin gingiva) (TG), the test group with grafting material TG + GM, the control group (normal gingiva) (CG), or the control group with grafting material CG + GM. Ground sections were prepared from 12-week healing biopsies, and histomorphometry and fluorescence analysis were performed. Results In the groups with thin gingiva, numerically greater buccal bone loss was observed, while there were no differences between grafted and nongrafted sites. A numerically higher rate of mineralization was observed for the grafted sites, as compared with the nongrafted sites, at 12 weeks. Conclusions A thin buccal bone plate leads to higher bone loss in extraction sockets, even with flapless surgery. The gingival thickness or the use of a graft material did not prevent buccal bone resorption in a naturally thin biotype, but modified the mineralization process.

Subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) has been extensively used for a variety of clinical applications. However, the surgical procedure may not allow control of graft thickness. The purpose of this case series is to illustrate a modification to the single incision palatal harvesting technique in order to control the SCTG thickness without increasing patient discomfort. Fifty cases from thirty systemically and periodontally healthy patients with at least one multiple gingival recession were treated with coronally advanced flaps combined with a SCTG. The palatal area served as the donor site, from where a single perpendicular incision was made to obtain a full thickness flap. Next, 1-2 mm of the flap was elevated and dissected to obtain a partial thickness flap. The graft remained attached to the full-partial thickness flap. After determining the desired SCTG thickness, the graft was harvested from the palatal flap. The patients healed uneventfully at 7 days postoperatively and primary closure was obtained for all palatal donor sites. The SCTG length and width varied depending on the needs of each case, but the SCTG thickness was well controlled with only 0.24 mm standard deviation. The suggested modification granted control of the SCTG dimensions and achieved complete wound closure within a week. O enxerto de tecido conjuntivo (ETC) tem sido amplamente utilizado para várias aplicações clínicas. Entretanto, o procedimento cirúrgico pode não permitir o controle da espessura do enxerto gengival. O objetivo deste relato de casos seriados é descrever uma nova técnica cirúrgica que modifica a técnica de incisão única para remoção de enxerto gengival, permitindo o controle da espessura do ETC sem aumentar o desconforto do paciente. Cinquenta casos foram realizados em trinta pacientes sistemicamente e periodontalmente saudáveis, que apresentavam pelo menos uma retração gengival múltipla, a qual foi tratada pela técnica de retalho avançado coronalmente combinada com ETC. O palato serviu como área doadora, uma incisão perpendicular foi realizada para criar um retalho total. Em seguida 1-2 mm do retalho foi elevado e dissecado para obter um retalho parcial. O ETC permaneceu retido no retalho total-parcial. Depois de determinar qual a espessura desejada do ETC, o enxerto foi removido do palato. Os pacientes apresentaram cicatrização sem complicações em 7 dias, com fechamento da ferida por primeira intenção em todos os casos. A largura e comprimento do ETC variaram conforme a necessidade de cada caso clínico, mas a espessura do ETC foi bem controlada, com apenas 0,24 mm de desvio padrão. A sugestão de modificação de técnica cirúrgica para remoção de ETC permite controlar as dimensões do ETC e fechamento da ferida por primeira intenção em 7 dias.

Background This study has evaluated the effect of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) used in conjunction with non-surgical and surgical periodontal treatment (PT) in modulating gene expression during periodontal wound healing. Methods Fifteen patients with chronic periodontitis, presenting bilaterally lower molars with class III furcation lesions and scheduled for extraction, were selected. In initial therapy, scaling and root planing (SRP) was performed in the Control Group (CG), while SRP + aPDT were performed in the Test Group (TG). 45 days later, flap surgery plus SRP, and flap surgery plus SRP + aPDT were performed in the CG and TG, respectively. At 21 days post-surgery, the newly formed granulation tissue was collected, and Real-time PCR evaluated the expression of the genes: tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, interleukin-4, interleukin-10, matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2), osteoprotegerin (OPG), receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL), type I collagen, alkaline phosphatase, osteopontin, osteocalcin, and bone sialoprotein. Results There were statistically significant differences between the groups in relation to mRNA levels for MMP-2 (TG = 3.26 ± 0.89; CG = 4.23 ± 0.97; p = 0.01), TIMP-2/MMP-2 ratio (TG = 0.91 ± 0.34; CG = 0.73 ± 0.32; p = 0.04), OPG (TG = 0.84 ± 0.45; CG = 0.30 ± 0.26; p = 0.001), and OPG/RANKL ratio (TG = 0.60 ± 0.86; CG = 0.23 ± 0.16; p = 0.04), favoring the TG. Conclusion The present data suggest that the aPDT associated to nonsurgical and surgical periodontal therapy may modulate the extracellular matrix and bone remodeling by up regulating the TIMP- 2/MMP-2 and OPG/RANKL mRNA ratio, but the clinical relevance needs to be evaluated in further studies.

This study aimed to investigate the influence of a three-dimensional cell culture model and bioactive glass (BG) particles on the expression of osteoblastic phenotypes in rat calvaria osteogenic cells culture. Cells were seeded on two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) collagen with BG particles for up to 14 days. Cell viability and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was performed. Cell morphology and immunolabeling of noncollagenous bone matrix proteins were assessed by epifluorescence and confocal microscopy. The expressions of osteogenic markers were analyzed using RT-PCR. Mineralized bone-like nodule formation was visualized by microscopy and calcium content was assessed quantitatively by alizarin red assay. Experimental cultures produced a growing cell viability rate up to 14 days. Although ALP activity at 7 days was higher on BG cultures, cells on 3D and 3D+BG had an activity decrease of ALP at 14 days. Three-dimensional conditions favored the immunolabeling for OPN and BSP and the expression of ALP and COL I mRNAs. BG particles influenced positively the OC and OPN mRNAs expression and calcified nodule formation in vitro. The results indicated that the 3D cultures and BG particles contribute to the expression of osteoblastic phenotype and to differentiated and mineralized matrix formation. Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a influência do modelo de cultura celular tridimensional e das partículas de vidro bioativo (BG) sobre a expressão fenotípica de culturas de células osteogênicas da calvária de ratos. As células foram mantidas em culturas sobre superfícies colágenas bi-dimensionais (2D) e em géis de colágeno tridimensional (3D) com e sem partículas de BG até 14 dias. Foram avaliadas: viabilidade celular, atividade de fosfatase alcalina (ALP), morfologia celular e imunomarcação de proteínas da matriz não-colágena do osso através de epifluorescência e microscopia confocal. As expressões de marcadores osteogênicos foram analisadas utilizando RT-PCR. A formação de nódulos mineralizados foi visualizada através de microscopia e o conteúdo de cálcio foi avaliado quantitativamente pelo Alizarina Red. As culturas experimentais produziram uma taxa crescente de viabilidade até 14 dias. Embora a atividade ALP em 7 dias tenha sido maior em culturas com BG, as células em 3D e 3D+BG apresentaram uma diminuição da atividade ALP aos 14 dias. As condições tridimensionais favoreceram a imunomarcação para OPN e BSP e a expressão de mRNAs para ALP e COL I. As partículas de BG influenciaram positivamente a expressão do mRNAs para OPN e OC e a formação de nódulos calcificados in vitro. Os resultados indicaram que as culturas em 3D e partículas BG contribuíram para a expressão do fenótipo osteoblástico e para a diferenciação e formação de matriz mineralizada.

This study evaluates effects of topical administration of probiotic bacteria of the genus Bifidobacterium on experimental periodontitis (EP) in rats.Thirty-two rats were divided into groups C (control; without EP), EP (EP only), C-HN019 (control+probiotic), and EP-HN019 (EP+probiotic). On day 0 of the experiment, animals of groups EP and EP-HN019 received cotton ligatures around mandibular first molars (MFMs). In groups C-HN019 and EP-HN019, 1 mL of suspensions containing Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (B. lactis) HN019 was topically administered in the subgingival region of MFMs on days 0, 3, and 7. In groups C and EP, topical administrations were performed using a sham suspension (without probiotic). All animals were euthanized at day 14. Gingival tissue, hemimandibles, and oral biofilm were collected. Data were statistically analyzed (P0.05).Group EP presented greater bone porosity, trabecular separation, and connective tissue attachment loss (CTAL) as well as reduced bone volume than all other groups (P0.05). In group EP-HN019, there were greater proportions of Actinomyces and Streptococcus-like species and lower proportions of Veillonella parvula, Capnocytophaga sputigena, Eikenella corrodens, and Prevotella intermedia-like species than group EP. Group EP-HN019 presented greater expressions of osteoprotegerin and β-defensins than group EP (P0.05). Group EP presented greater levels of interleukin-1β and receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand than group EP-HN019 (P0.05).Topical use of B. lactis HN019 promotes a protective effect against alveolar bone loss and CTALs attributable to EP in rats, modifying immunoinflammatory and microbiologic parameters.

Recent studies in animals have shown pronounced resorption of the buccal bone plate after immediate implantation. The use of flapless surgical procedures prior to the installation of immediate implants, as well as the use of synthetic bone graft in the gaps represent viable alternatives to minimize buccal bone resorption and to favor osseointegration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the healing of the buccal bone plate following immediate implantation using the flapless approach, and to compare this process with sites in which a synthetic bone graft was or was not inserted into the gap between the implant and the buccal bone plate. Lower bicuspids from 8 dogs were bilaterally extracted without the use of flaps, and 4 implants were installed in the alveoli in each side of the mandible and were positioned 2.0 mm from the buccal bone plate (gap). Four groups were devised: 2.0-mm subcrestal implants (3.3 × 8 mm) using bone grafts (SCTG), 2.0-mm subcrestal implants without bone grafts (SCCG), equicrestal implants (3.3 × 10 mm) with bone grafts (ECTG), and equicrestal implants without bone grafts (ECCG). One week following the surgical procedures, metallic prostheses were installed, and within 12 weeks the dogs were sacrificed. The blocks containing the individual implants were turned sideways, and radiographic imaging was obtained to analyze the remodeling of the buccal bone plate. In the analysis of the resulting distance between the implant shoulder and the bone crest, statistically significant differences were found in the SCTG when compared to the ECTG (P = .02) and ECCG (P = .03). For mean value comparison of the resulting linear distance between the implant surface and the buccal plate, no statistically significant difference was found among all groups (P > .05). The same result was observed in the parameter for presence or absence of tissue formation between the implant surface and buccal plate. Equicrestally placed implants, in this methodology, presented little or no loss of the buccal bone. The subcrestally positioned implants presented loss of buccal bone, even though synthetic bone graft was used. The buccal bone, however, was always coronal to the implant shoulder.

Few studies have focused on the impact of hypertension on the progression of periodontitis (PD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether hypertension affects PD by enhancing bone loss even after the stimulus for PD induction is removed. Ligature-induced PD was created on the first mandibular molars of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive rats (Wistar Kyoto-WKY). The animals were assigned to non-ligated controls (C) and PD groups: WKY-C, WKY-PD, SHR-C, and SHR-PD. After 10 days, five animals of each group were killed and the ligatures of the other animals were removed. On the 21st day (11 days without PD induced), the remaining animals were killed. The jaws were defleshed and the amount of bone loss was measured. After 10 days, the PD groups showed more bone loss than its controls (P.05); SHR-PD = 0.72 ± 0.05 mm, SHR-C = 0.39 ± 0.04 mm, WKY-PD = 0.75 ± 0.04 mm, and WKY-C = 0.56 ± 0.04 mm. The cumulative bone loss on day 21 (0.94 ± 0.13 mm) was significantly worse than on day 10 only in SHR-PD group (P.05). The final bone loss differences between PD and C groups accounted for 102% (SHR) and 26% (WKY) increase in comparison with the initial control levels. Hypertension is associated with progressive alveolar bone loss even when the stimulus for PD induction is removed and it may be speculated that host condition perpetuates alveolar bone loss.

Recent studies in animals have shown pronounced resorption of buccal bone plate after immediate implantation. The sectioning of experimental material for histologic evaluation of the bone plates could provide valuable information about the possible effect of bone exposure in periodontal and implant surgeries.Twenty-four incisors were collected from dogs. After decalcification, the blocks were immersed in paraffin and bucco-lingual histologic sections were examined under light microscope. Some sections were reserved for immunohistochemical analysis.The bone density, the width of the bone plates, and the percentage of vessels presented in the periodontal ligament and periosteum were analyzed in the buccal and lingual bone plates, which were divided corono-apically into thirds. The buccal bone plates showed statistically higher bone density compared to the lingual bone plates in the coronal thirds. The width of both bone plates increased from the coronal to the apical third, but all the buccal thirds were significantly thinner compared to the lingual thirds. No statistically significant differences were found between the bone plates for the percentage of area occupied by the blood vessels in the periodontal ligament or periosteum.It is reasonable to conclude that the higher bone density, represented by the lower number of marrow spaces, in association with the thinner aspect of the buccal bone plates made them more fragile to absorb compared to the lingual bone plates, especially during mucoperiosteal procedures.

Tissue engineering principles could improve the incorporation of acellular dermal matrix (ADM). The aim of this study is to verify if ADM is a suitable three-dimensional matrix for gingival fibroblasts and cancerous cells ingrowth, and also if cultured medium conditioned in ADM affect cellular behavior.Canine gingival fibroblasts (CGF), human gingival fibroblasts (HGF), and murine melanoma cell line (B16F10) were seeded on ADM for up to 14 days. The following parameters were assessed: morphology and distribution of CGF, HGF, and B16F10; CGF and HGF viability; and the effect of ADM conditioned medium (CM) on CGF viability.Epifluorescence revealed that CGF were unevenly distributed on the ADM surface, showing no increase in cell number over the periods of study; HGF formed a monolayer on the ADM surface in a higher number at 14 days (P0.05); B16F10 exhibited an increase in cell number within 7 days (P0.05), and were mainly arranged in cell aggregates on the ADM, forming a continuous layer at 14 days. A higher percentage of cells on the ADM surface (P0.05) compared to inside was observed for all cell types. 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) values indicated higher cell viability in samples cultured with HGF compared to CGF (P = 0.024). A significantly lower cell viability for CGF grown in CM compared to cells grown in non-CM was observed at 48 and 72 hours (P0.05).ADM is not suitable as a three-dimensional matrix for gingival fibroblasts ingrowth. Gingival fibroblasts and highly proliferative cells as B16F10 can only be superficially located on ADM, and CGF are negatively affected by culture medium conditioned in ADM, reducing its viability.

Preventing ridge collapse with the extraction of maxillary anterior teeth is vital to an esthetic restorative result. Several regenerative techniques are available and are used for socket preservation. The aim of this study is to analyze by clinical parameters the use of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) and anorganic bovine bone matrix (ABM) with synthetic cell-binding peptide P-15 to preserve alveolar bone after tooth extraction.Eighteen patients in need of extraction of maxillary anterior teeth were selected and randomly assigned to the test group (ADM plus ABM/P-15) or the control group (ADM only). Clinical measurements were recorded initially and at 6 months after ridge-preservation procedures.In the clinical measurements (external vertical palatal measurement [EVPM], external vertical buccal measurement [EVBM], and alveolar horizontal measurement [AHM]) the statistical analysis showed no difference between test and control groups initially and at 6 months. The intragroup analysis, after 6 months, showed a statistically significant reduction in the measurements for both groups. In the comparison between the two groups, the differences in the test group were as follows: EVPM = 0.83 ± 1.53 mm; EVBM = 1.20 ± 2.02 mm; and AHM = 2.53 ± 1.81 mm. The differences in the control group were as follows: EVPM = 0.87 ± 1.13 mm; EVBM = 1.50 ± 1.15 mm; and AHM = 3.40 ± 1.39 mm. The differences in EVPM and EVBM were not statistically significant; however, in horizontal measurement (AHM), there was a statistically significant difference (P0.05).The results of this study show that ADM used as membrane associated with ABM/P-15 can be used to reduce buccal-palatal dimensions compared to ADM alone for preservation of the alveolar ridge after extraction of anterior maxillary teeth.

Aim: To evaluate the influence of magnesium-enriched hydroxyapatite (MHA) (SintLife®) on bone contour preservation and osseointegration at implants placed immediately into extraction sockets. Material and methods: In the mandibular pre-molar region, implants were installed immediately into extraction sockets of six Labrador dogs. MHA was placed at test sites, while the control sites did not receive augmentation materials. Implants were intended to heal in a submerged mode. After 4 months of healing, the animals were sacrificed, and ground sections were obtained for histomorphometric evaluation. Results: After 4 months of healing, one control implant was not integrated leaving n=5 test and control implants for evaluation. Both at the test and the control sites, bone resorption occurred. While the most coronal bone-to-implant contact was similar between test and control sites, the alveolar bony crest outline was maintained to a higher degree at the buccal aspect of the test sites (loss: 0.7 mm) compared with the control sites (loss: 1.2 mm), even though this difference did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: The use of MHA to fill the defect around implants placed into the alveolus immediately after tooth extraction did not contribute significantly to the maintenance of the contours of the buccal alveolar bone crest. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the inflammatory infiltrate and on the collagen network organization in human advanced chronic periodontitis. Two different drug delivery systems (DDS) were tested (liposomes and nanoemulsions) to determine if the effects of PDT could differ according to the DDS used. Sixteen patients presenting two teeth with chronic advanced periodontitis and important tooth mobility with clinical indication of extraction were included in the group liposomes (group L, n =8 ) or in the group nanoemulsions (group N, n = 8) in order to compare the effects of each DDS. Seven days before extractions one tooth of each patient was treated with PDT using phthalocyanine derivatives as photosensitizers and the contralateral tooth was taken as control. In group L the density of gingival collagen fibers (66 ± 19%) was significantly increased (p < 0.02) when compared to controls (35 ± 21%). Concerning the antigen-presenting cells, PDT had differential effects depending on the drug delivery system; the number of macrophages was significantly decreased (p < 0.05) in group L while the number of Langerhans cells was significantly decreased in group N (p < 0.02). These findings demonstrate that PDT presents an impact on gingival inflammatory phenomenon during chronic periodontitis and leads to a specific decrease of antigen-presenting cells populations according to the drug delivery system used.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a single application of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on microbiological profile and cytokine pattern in dogs. Periodontal disease was induced by placing 3.0 silk ligatures around the mandibular pre-molars bilaterally during 8 weeks. The dogs were randomly treated with aPDT using a dye/laser system, scaling and root planning (SRP), or with the association of treatments (SRP + aPDT). Plaque samples were collected at baseline, 1, 3, and 4 weeks, and the mean counts of 40 species were determined using DNA-DNA hybridization. Gingival biopsies were removed and the expression of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), receptor activator of NF-kB ligand (RANKL), osteoprotegerin (OPG), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-1), interleukin (IL) 6, IL-10 and total bacterial load by analysis of 16 S rRNA gene were evaluated through real-time PCR. The results shows that the levels of the majority of the species were reduced 1 week post-therapy for all treatments, however, an increase in counts of Prevotella intermedia (p = 0.00), Prevotella. nigrescens (p = 0.00) and Tannerella forsythia (p = 0.00) was observed for aPDT and SRP + aPDT. After 4 weeks, a regrowth of Porphyromonas gingivalis (p = 0.00) and Treponema denticola (p = 0.00), was observed for all treatments. Also, a strikingly reduction of counts on counts of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans was observed for the aPDT (p = 0.00). For the cytokine pattern, the results were similar for all treatments, and a reduction in the expression of cytokines and bacterial load was observed throughout the study. Our results suggest that SRP, aPDT in a single application, and SRP + aPDT affects different bacterial species and have similar effects on the expression of cytokines evaluated during the treatment of ligature-induced periodontitis.

Aim: To compare the remodeling of the alveolar process at implants installed immediately into extraction sockets by applying a flap or a “flapless” surgical approach in a dog model. Material and methods: Implants were installed immediately into the distal alveoli of the second mandibular premolars of six Labrador dogs. In one side of the mandible, a full-thickness mucoperiosteal flap was elevated (control site), while contra-laterally, the mucosa was gently dislocated, but not elevated (test site) to disclose the alveolar crest. After 4 months of healing, the animals were sacrificed, ground sections were obtained and a histomorphometric analysis was performed. Results: After 4 months of healing, all implants were integrated (n=6). Both at the test and at the control sites, bone resorption occurred with similar outcomes. The buccal bony crest resorption was 1.7 and 1.5 mm at the control and the test sites, respectively. Conclusions: “Flapless” implant placement into extraction sockets did not result in the prevention of alveolar bone resorption and did not affect the dimensional changes of the alveolar process following tooth extraction when compared with the usual placement of implants raising mucoperiosteal flaps. The aim of this study is to verify the regenerative potential of particulate anorganic bone matrix-synthetic peptide-15 (ABM-P-15) in class III furcation defects associated or not with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membranes.Class III furcation defects were produced in the mandibular premolars (P2, P3, and P4) of six dogs and filled with impression material. The membranes and the bone grafts were inserted into P3 and P4, which were randomized to form the test and control groups, respectively; P2 was the negative control group. The animals were sacrificed 3 months post-treatment.Histologically, the complete closure of class III furcation defects was not observed in any of the groups. Partial periodontal regeneration with similar morphologic characteristics among the groups was observed, however, through the formation of new cementum, periodontal ligament, and bone above the notch. Histologic analysis showed granules from the bone graft surrounded by immature bone matrix and encircled by newly formed tissue in the test group. The new bone formation area found in the negative control group was 2.28 + or - 2.49 mm(2) and in the test group it was 6.52 + or - 5.69 mm(2), which showed statistically significant differences for these groups considering this parameter (Friedman test P0.05). There was no statistically significant difference among the negative control, control, and test groups for the other parameters.The regenerative potential of ABM-P-15 was demonstrated through new bone formation circumscribing and above the graft particles. The new bone also was accompanied by the formation of new cementum and periodontal ligament fibers.

Aim: To evaluate the influence of implant positioning into extraction sockets on osseointegration. Material and methods: Implants were installed immediately into extraction sockets in the mandibles of six Labrador dogs. In the control sites, the implants were positioned in the center of the alveolus, while in the test sites, the implants were positioned 0.8 mm deeper and more lingually. After 4 months of healing, the resorptive patterns of the alveolar crest were evaluated histomorphometrically. Results: All implants were integrated in mineralized bone, mainly composed of mature lamellar bone. The alveolar crest underwent resorption at the control as well as at the test sites. After 4 months of healing, at the buccal aspects of the control and test sites, the location of the implant rough/smooth limit to the alveolar crest was 2±0.9 mm and 0.6±0.9 mm, respectively (P

The biological fixation between the dental implant surfaces and jaw bones should be considered a prerequisite for the long-term success of implant-supported prostheses. In this context, the implant surface modifications gained an important and decisive place in implant research over the last years. As the most investigated topic in, it aided the development of enhanced dental treatment modalities and the expansion of dental implant use. Nowadays, a large number of implant types with a great variety of surface properties and other features are commercially available and have to be treated with caution. Although surface modifications have been shown to enhance osseointegration at early implantation times, for example, the clinician should look for research evidence before selecting a dental implant for a specific use. This paper reviews the literature on dental implant surfaces by assessing in vitro and in vivo studies to show the current perspective of implant development. The review comprises quantitative and qualitative results on the analysis of bone-implant interface using micro and nano implant surface topographies. Furthermore, the perspective of incorporating biomimetic molecules (e.g.: peptides and bone morphogenetic proteins) to the implant surface and their effects on bone formation and remodeling around implants are discussed.
