1. Is derivational morphology canonical in Persian?

Abstract

The present contribution bears an attempt to take a novel synchronic perspective on derivational morphology in Persian namely canonical derivation. Introduced by Corbett (2010) and being a sub branch of canonical typology approach, canonical derivation viewpoint looks for canonical instances of single grammatical categories which are the best, the clearest and the indisputable ones rendering spectacular typological definitions. In this paper, by analyzing (195) derivational affixes including (22) prefixes and (173) suffixes, we endeavored to discover whether derivational morphology is canonical in Persian or the derivational affixes are far from canonicity in some degrees. The data analysis revealed that (%34) of derivational affixes rejected the substitutability criterion and just one suffix rejected 2 criteria. In sum, among 975 points for the fully canonical system, Persian gained 904which portrayed (%7.29) deviation from the canon; in other words, it is (%93) canonical. This amount of canonicity illustrates that derivation system in Persian is so close to the canonicity of derivation systems worldwide.

2. Grice’s Cooperative Principles in News Reports of Tehran Times- A Descriptive-Analytical Study

Abstract

Since in modern day most of the information is conveyed through written communication, and media play a significant role in the conveyance of hot issues of the day, the language of the news has attracted the attention of both media researchers and linguists for decades. This descriptive-analytical study aimed to compare the adoption and violation of Grice‟s (1975) cooperative principles (CPs) in news reports published in Tehran Times and identify which of these four CPs (quality, quantity, manner, and relation) has been violated most and which of them has been violated least. In this regard, 120 news stories were selected randomly from the newspaper Tehran Times, in which the adoption and violation of these CPs were studied by two independent raters. Ten reports were selected from whatever published in the 12 months. Results revealed that maxim of quality was violated most, and its highest amount among five news categories was related to social news. Also, findings showed that maxim of relation was violated least, and the lowest amount among five news categories was related to cultural news, that the second highest violated maxim was the maxim of quality, and that in total maxims in the economic and social news were profoundly violated compared to the other three news categories. Findings of this study can be used by EFL learners and teachers as well as report writers in multimedia.

Abstract

Dynamic assessment (DA), as a pro-learning style of assessment, has been investigated in the educational literature for three decades or more. DA has been encouraged by the dearthof conventional static tests to prepare precise information about the individual’slearning abilities, change processes, specific deficient functions, and mediationalstrategies that are in charge for cognitive modifiability. DA, strongly rooted in Socio-cultural Theory (SCT) and Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), is essentially defined as an approach which takes into account personal differences and their uses for teaching which accepts intervention in the assessment method.As stated by Lantolf and Poehner (2011), both collaborative functioning and interaction with others in DA differentiates it from traditional assessment. In DA processes, the emphasis is on the process rather than the products of learning. The important point is that dynamic assessment, as opposed to non-dynamic assessment (NDA), does not separate teaching from testing but instead takes them into account as two aspects of the same thing. Many authors have offered that DA could be used in all language skills, while others postulated that it cannot be useful in the ordinary classes. Regarding the significant contributions of DA in EFL/ESL contexts, the present paper, therefore, aims to review some important studies that have implemented DA on different language skills and the process of their research. It brings to the fore different theories underlying DA, including SCT and ZPD. It then elucidates two approaches to DA, namely interactionist and interventionist. It finally suggests some strands of research and emphasizes the implications of other studies conducted on the interplay between language skills and DA.
