13. A foundation offering at the Roman port of Lattara (Lattes, France): the plant remains

Abstract

Abstract: Excavations and sampling conducted at the ancient city of Lattara (Lattes, France) have revealed a foundation offering in a small pit situated in a storehouse in the Roman port of the city. This offering, dated to around a.d. 25–60, consisted of pottery vessels, oil lamps, a coin, a pin (made out of bone), an egg and several plant products. The archaeobotanical remains presented in this work are charred seeds, fruits and charcoal. The primary aim of this study is to analyse whether the plant taxa are unusual or the same ones that appear in the contemporary domestic contexts in the city, in order to assess the possibility of a special use of the plants related to, for instance, their symbolic or magical value. The discovery of domestic or public burnt offerings containing plant remains is unknown in the Mediterranean region of France during the Roman period, except for those found in funerary contexts.

Waterlogged sediments may contain large amounts of seeds and vegetative remains that are extremely valuable sources of palaeoenvironmental and palaeoeconomic information. In broad terms, archaeobotanists use similar methods when processing waterlogged samples. Yet, differences in sample pretreatment, volume measurements, sieving technique and mesh sizes exist.

Abstract

Seed and fruit remains from archaeological sites provide the most direct source of evidence on ancient crops and plant food resources. Earlier studies on late Neolithic sites (3500–2200 BC) in the Grands Causses and Hérault valley areas focused on cave and rock-shelter sites. Here, we discuss new and previously published archaeobotanical evidence from open-air settlements, which should be considered as more representative of the standard subsistence and farming economy. Patterns in the data have been analyzed through sample densities, diversity index, taxa ubiquities, and abundance by means of correspondence factor analysis. Contrary to what is assumed in other Western European regions for that period, the available dataset indicates that cereals were consumed and therefore probably cultivated on a regular basis in the Grands Causses and Hérault valley. The range of crops and collected wild fruits was the same in both areas but certain differences existed. As in other regions, einkorn played a significant role during the late Neolithic, but it was more common in the Hérault valley than in the Grands Causses plateaux. On the other hand, the collection of wild fruits seemed to be of more importance in the hinterland than in the littoral area. The more striking difference concerns crop processing activities and the use of glume wheat by-products. They are much more common in the Grands Causses samples.

Abstract

This paper presents the history of the introduction and expansion of arboriculture during the 1st millennium BC from the South of the Iberian Peninsula to the South of France. The earliest evidence of arboriculture at the beginning of the 1st millennium hails from the south of the Iberia from where it spread northward along the peninsula’s eastern edge. The different fruits (grape, olive, fig, almond, pomegranate and apple/pear) arrived together in certain areas in spite of uneven distribution and acceptance by local communities. Grape was the crop with the greatest diffusion. The greater diversity of crops in the southern half of the peninsula is also noteworthy. Their development paved the way for a commercial agricultural model in some territories where fruits and their derivatives, such as wine and oil, played vital roles.

Abstract

International audience; Created in the 1980s by Michel Py (CNRS) and the Lattes excavation team, the Syslat software was designed as a computer tool for managing and exploiting excavation data. This software is in the process of evolving into an Archaeological Information System (SIA), designed to be adaptable to all types of sites, remains and periods. The evolution of Syslat into an AIS will make it possible to integrate the latest advances in terms of procedures for recording and using excavation data, while continuing the effort to standardise and create repositories linked to the various dictionaries and libraries attached to the software. We present here the various tools for recording and processing of furniture (ecofacts) and data of bioarchaeological origin, in particular the files on samples, macrofauna and avifauna, as well as carpology that are currently available. Other files (ichthyofauna, anthracology…) are currently being developed and will complement Syslat in the new design of the software.; Créé dans les années 80 par Michel Py (CNRS) et l’équipe de fouilles de Lattes, le logiciel Syslat a été conçu comme un outil informatique de gestion et d’exploitation des données de fouille. Ce logiciel est en train d’évoluer vers un Système d’Information Archéologique (SIA), destiné à être adaptable à tous types de sites, de vestiges et à toutes périodes. L’évolution de Syslat en SIA permettra d’intégrer les dernières avancées en matière de procédures d’enregistrement et d’exploitation des données de fouille, tout en poursuivant l’effort de normalisation et de création de référentiels liés aux différents dictionnaires et bibliothèques attenants au logiciel. Nous présentons ici les différents outils d’enregistrement et de traitement des mobiliers (écofacts) et données d’origine bioarchéologique, en particulier les fichiers sur les prélèvements, la macrofaune et l’avifaune, ainsi que la carpologie qui sont actuellement disponibles. D’autres fiches (ichtyofaune, anthracologie…) sont en cours d’élaboration et viendront compléter Syslat dans la nouvelle conception du logiciel.

Barrie’s 1904 play Peter Pan; or the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. This study will contrast the original play with three filmic adaptations, taking into account matters of intertextuality and various theories on adaptation. Abstract

[Objective] To characterize children, adolescents and young adults infected with HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV) vertically or before age of 18 years and living in Europe regarding mode of acquisition, HCV genotype, clinical status and treatment., [Design] Retrospective, cross-sectional study using pooled data from 11 European paediatric HIV cohorts., [Methods] Patients aged more than 18 months and less than 25 years, with HIV/HCV acquired vertically or in childhood, were included. Anonymized individual patient data were collected using a standard protocol and modified HIV Cohorts Data Exchange Protocol., [Results] Of 229 patients included, 142 (62%) had vertically acquired infection. Median age at last follow-up was 16.2 years. Most children had HCV genotype 1 (101/184, 55%) or 3 (57/184, 31%). One-fifth (46/214) had a previous AIDS diagnosis (data missing on prior AIDS diagnoses for 15). At their last clinic visit, 70% (145/208) had no/mild immunosuppression (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stage 1), and 131 of 179 on antiretroviral therapy had undetectable HIV RNA (assay thresholds varied from <20 to <150 copies/ml). Overall, 42% (86/204) had hepatomegaly in the previous year, and 55% (116/213) had alanine aminotransferase more than 40 IU/l at their last test. Of 97 patients with transient elastography, 12 had results more than 9 kPa; this was associated with duration of HCV infection (P = 0.033), but not with CD4+ cell count, antiretroviral therapy use or sex in univariable analysis. Of 17 patients with liver biopsies, six had bridging fibrosis and one had cirrhosis. Twenty-five (11%) had been treated successfully for HCV., [Conclusion] The high proportion of patients with progressive liver disease underscores the need for close monitoring and earlier and more effective HCV treatment.

Abstract

International audience; This article gives an account of the remains of a cooking area discovered inside a building interpreted as a tower, situated in the villa of Saint Bézard (Aspiran). After an overview of the present research on cooking spaces in the central part of Narbonensis, the building is described, inside a vast agricultural and craft establishment organized around a villa. Following is the chronology of the tower (1st c. to 4th c. AD) with its architectural and functional characteristics. The cooking space and devices are analysed in detail as well as the finds, notably the plant remains which bring definite results allowing to situate a bakery area. Finally, the question of the place of bread consumption in rural context is raised, underlining the importance of the spread of rotary-querns or water mills devoted to flour production, between the 1st century and the 3rd century AD.; Cette contribution concerne les vestiges d’un espace culinaire mis au jour à l’intérieur d’un bâtiment interprété comme une tour, située dans l’emprise de la villa de Saint Bézard (Aspiran, Hérault). Après une introduction présentant un bref état de la recherche sur les espaces culinaires en Narbonnaise centrale, l’étude commence par une présentation de cet édifice inclus dans un vaste complexe agricole et artisanal organisé autour d’une villa. La chronologie de la tour (Ier-IVe s.) et ses caractéristiques architecturales et fonctionnelles sont ensuite abordées. La pièce culinaire et ses aménagements internes sont présentés en détail, tout comme les mobiliers associés, notamment les carporestes dont l’analyse apporte des éléments décisifs permettant de localiser ici une activité de boulangerie. In fine, on s’interroge sur la place de la consommation de pain en contexte rural en soulignant l’importance de la diffusion des moulins à sang ou hydrauliques, destinés à la production de farine panifiable, entre le Ier s. et le IIIe s. apr. J.-C.

Abstract

Archaeological and archaeobotanical research in coastal Languedoc, southern France, has been extensive over the last 30 years, with work on several major sites aiming to understand not only the role of local crop growing but also exchanges of plant products with many Mediterranean societies. With regard to the Iron Age, recent excavations and studies have provided new information about the agricultural systems and plant consumption practices there during the 6th–4th centuries bc. The results demonstrate a well-structured crop growing based on cereals and pulses together with an increasing amount of fruit, especially grapevine. During the 3rd–2nd centuries bc there are changes representing the new Roman trends. The main aim of this article is therefore to discuss these two Second Iron Age periods, 6th–4th and 3rd–2nd centuries, focusing on both economic and cultural aspects through their comparison. For this, we present new archaeobotanical data on seed and fruit analyses from three archaeological sites, Pech Maho, Lattara and Le Cailar, which share many environmental, economic and cultural characteristics.
