This study focusses on the design and scale-up of industrial lactic acid production by fermentation of dairy cheese whey permeate based on standard methodological parameters. The aim was to address the shortcomings of standard scale-up methodologies and provide a framework for fermenter scale-up that enables the accurate estimation of energy consumption by suitable selection of turbine and speed for industrial deployment. Moreover, life cycle assessment (LCA) was carried out to identify the potential impacts and possibilities to reduce the operation associated emissions at an early stage. The findings showed that a 3000 times scale-up strategy assuming constant geometric dimensions and specific energy consumption ( P/V w ) resulted in lower impeller speed and energy demand. The Rushton turbine blade (RTB) and LightninA315 four-blade hydrofoil (LA315) were found to have the highest and lowest torque output, respectively, at a similar P/V w of 2.8 kWm -3 , with agitation speeds of 1.33 and 2.5 s -1 , respectively. RTB demonstrating lower shear damage towards cells (up to 1.33 s -1 ) was selected because it permits high torque, low-power and acceptable turbulence. Background: There are no available school-based alcohol and drug prevention programs with evidence of effectiveness among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth. To address this, we codeveloped the Strong & Deadly Futures well-being and alcohol and drug prevention program in partnership with an Indigenous creative design agency and 4 Australian schools., Objective: This paper presents the protocol to evaluate the effectiveness of Strong & Deadly Futures in reducing alcohol and other drug use and improving well-being among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth., Methods: The target sample will be 960 year 7 and 8 students from 24 secondary schools in Australia, of which approximately 40% (384/960) will identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. The study design is a 2-group, parallel cluster randomized controlled trial with allocation concealment. Recruited schools will be block randomized (ratio 1:1), stratified by geographical remoteness, by an independent statistician. Schools will be randomized to receive Strong & Deadly Futures, a web-based alcohol and drug prevention and social and emotional well-being program that delivers curriculum-aligned content over 6 lessons via an illustrated story, or health education as usual (control). Control schools will be supported to implement Strong & Deadly Futures following trial completion. Surveys will be administered at baseline, 6 weeks, 12 months, and 24 months (primary end point) post baseline. Primary outcomes are alcohol use (adapted from the National Drug Strategy Household Survey), tobacco use (Standard High School Youth Risk Behavior Survey), and psychological distress (Kessler-5 Psychological Distress Scale). Secondary outcomes are alcohol and drug knowledge and intentions, alcohol-related harms, binge drinking, cannabis use, well-being, empowerment, appreciation of cultural diversity, and truancy., Results: The trial was funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council in January 2019, approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of Sydney (2020/039, April 2020), the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council of New South Wales (1620/19, February 2020), the Western Australian Aboriginal Health Ethics Committee (998, October 2021), and the ethics committees of each participating school, including the New South Wales Department of Education (2020170, June 2020), Catholic Education Western Australia (RP2020/39, November 2020), and the Queensland Department of Education (550/27/2390, August 2021). Projected dates of data collection are 2022-2024, and we expect to publish the results in 2025. In the lacunar spinels, with the formula AB 4 X 8 , transition-metal ions form tightly bound B 4 clusters resulting in exotic physical properties such as the stabilization of Néel-type skyrmion lattices, which hold great promise for energy-efficient switching devices. These properties are governed by the symmetry of these compounds with distortion of the parent noncentrosymmetric F 4̅3 m space group to the polar R 3 m , with recent observation of a coexisting Imm 2 low-temperature phase. In this study, through powder neutron diffraction, we further confirm that a metastable Imm 2 coexists with the R 3 m phase in GaMo 4 Se 8 and we present its structure. By applying the mode crystallography approach to the distortions together with anisotropic microstrain broadening analysis, we postulate that the formation origin of the minority Imm 2 phase stems from the high compressive stress observed in the R 3 m phase. Bond valence sum analysis also suggests a change in electronic configuration in the transition to Imm 2 which could have implications on the electrical properties of the compound. We further establish the nature of the magnetic phase transition using critical exponent analysis obtained from single-crystal magnetization measurements which shows a mixture of tricritical mean-field and 3D Heisenberg behavior [β = 0.22(4), γ = 1.19(1), and δ = 6.42(1)]. MSM/Ms (MSM) is a mouse strain derived from Japanese wild mice, Mus musculus molossinus , that maintains the ability to synthesize melatonin in patterns reflecting the ambient photoperiod. The objective of this study was to characterize the effects of photoperiodic variation on metabolic and reproductive traits, and the related changes in pituitary-hypothalamic gene expression in MSM mice. MSM mice were kept in long (LP) or short photoperiod (SP) for 6 weeks. Our results demonstrate that MSM mice kept in LP, as compared with mice kept in SP, display higher expression of genes encoding thyrotropin (TSH) in the pars tuberalis, thyroid hormone deiodinase 2 (dio2) in the tanycytes and RFamide-related peptide (RFRP3) in the hypothalamus, and lower expression of dio3 in the tanycytes, along with larger body and reproductive organ mass. Additionally, to assess the effects of the gestational photoperiodic environment on the expression of these genes, we kept MSM mice in LP or SP from gestation and studied their offspring. We show that the gestational photoperiod affects the TSH/dio pathway in newborn MSM mice in a similar way to adults. This result indicates a transgenerational effect of photoperiod from the mother to the fetus in utero Overall, these results indicate that photoperiod can influence neuroendocrine regulation in a melatonin-proficient mouse strain, in a manner similar to that documented in other seasonal rodent species. Unlike hydroxyurea, the CTP synthetase inhibitor acivicin and, to a lesser extent, two other inhibitors of CTP synthesis, increased the phosphorylation and anti-HIV-1 activity of 3TC in PHA-P-activated PBMC. These data suggest that to improve the antiretroviral activity of 3TC, it may be worth focusing on inhibition of CTP synthesis.
