4. Probability distributions of geotechnical properties for heterogeneous lignite mine spoils.

- Abstract
During surface coal mining, large amounts of overburden waste materials, known as spoils, are excavated and dumped, creating massive heaps. The sustainable management of these areas is a global priority, but a comprehensive geotechnical characterization has not yet been achieved due to limited research on the spoils' geotechnical properties. This study conducts an advanced statistical analysis of lignite mine spoil materials from a large heap in Greece to determine suitable probability distributions. Five distributions - normal, lognormal, Weibull (2 and 3 parameters), and Gamma - were evaluated, considering the high variability of spoil material properties. The lognormal and Weibull distributions were found to best fit most geotechnical parameters, except for cohesion, which showed an uncommon distribution. In some cases, the normal distribution can be used for a simplified analysis. The findings can guide the analysis of spoil materials, as advanced numerical and stochastic methods are essential for robust geotechnical design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Criteria for mine productivity and efficiency are discussed, based on sustainability indicators that can be used for reporting productivity, investments and human resources management. The benchmarking of productivity is considered in relation to a mathematical model which incorporates production economics, economies of scale, total factor productivity involving all factors in the production process and technical efficiency parameters. An equation is presented showing the annual capital recovery resulting from the use of improved mining equipment and taking into account investment costs, operating expenses, annual excavation costs before and after the improvement in productivity, mine life and discount rate. Investments during the different phases of mine development include land expropriation/purchase, equipment purchase, replacement and repair and maintenance, compliance with legal obligations, reclamation, exploitation, infrastructure development and exploration and other studies. Equations are presented showing the relationships between annual cost per m3 of excavation, equipment capacity and investment and operating costs. The deposit reserves were estimated employing the Voronoi diagram method using a group of mirror points to close the polygons around the boundaries of the mine. Two data sets were investigated. The first related to an exhausted part of the mine, and the derived reserve estimates were compared with the actual data to validate the analysis. The second data set extended over the entire mine and was used to derive an approximate estimate of the total reserves. A geostatistical analysis of the layer thickness was carried out and the experimental variograms evaluated for both data sets in different spatial directions. Two theoretical models for the variograms were compared, an exponential and a new Spartan model. An interpolated kriging map of the total thickness variation was produced together with a map of kriging precision. The use of the analysers for sorting purposes to control blending and homogenisation operations is discussed. - Abstract
A mathematical model is presented for the evaluation of mining investments in the exploitation of mineral resources using the real options technique. The strategic flexibility of a lignite exploitation/power plant project was investigated in relation to optimum investment timing using a combination of real options theory and an economic viability model based on discounted cash flow analysis in the case of large future volatility of some key model parameters. Assuming the electricity market price as a stochastic parameter, the option to postpone decisions is determined and compared with the conventional evaluation technique. A decision-making model in relation to the mine planning stages is described., A mathematical model is presented for the evaluation of mining investments in the exploitation of mineral resources using the real options technique. The effect of large technical projects was investigated on the strategic planning and exploitation of surface lignite mines with extensive horizontal development. A model was developed for project management in three lignite mines, Main Field, Kardia Field and South Field, which extend from Kozani to Ptolemais in Northern Greece. The three mines operate as an integrated complex. Three large technical infrastructure systems will be affected, the old Kozani-Ptolemais national road, the corresponding railway line and the Soulou River. The project was aimed at relocation of the three infrastructure systems with unobstructed mine development and production. Transposition of the infrastructure systems was considered through spatial analysis and as a time scheduling problem and incorporated into the long-term mine planning model. A holistic solution approach was taken based on a worst-case scenario in which the infrastructure systems operate in their current location until completion of the relocation works, and subsequently in parallel with the new infrastructure systems for a period sufficient to establish full operation in their new locations. The scenario involves multiple cross-linking of the existing and future infrastructure systems, which should be minimised and be economically justified. In the case where temporary interruption of the operation of the old national road or/and railway line occurs, the problem appears to exhibit more degrees of freedom which simplifies the analysis, but the project schedule must be stricter as any interruption would impose additional social and economic constraints., The effect of large technical projects was investigated on the strategic planning and exploitation of surface lignite mines with extensive horizontal development. In the case where temporary interruption of the operation of the old national road or/and railway line occurs, the problem appears to exhibit more degrees of freedom which simplifies the analysis, but the project schedule must be stricter as any interruption would impose additional social and economic constraints.

- Abstract
Planned decommissioning of coal-fired plants in Europe requires innovative technical and economic strategies to support coal regions on their path towards a climate-resilient future. The repurposing of open pit mines into hybrid pumped hydro power storage (HPHS) of excess energy from the electric grid, and renewable sources will contribute to the EU Green Deal, increase the economic value, stabilize the regional job market and contribute to the EU energy supply security. This study aims to present a preliminary phase of a geospatial workflow used to evaluate land suitability by implementing a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) technique with an advanced geographic information system (GIS) in the context of an interdisciplinary feasibility study on HPHS in the Kardia lignite open pit mine (Western Macedonia, Greece). The introduced geospatial analysis is based on the utilization of the constraints and ranking criteria within the boundaries of the abandoned mine regarding specific topographic and proximity criteria. The applied criteria were selected from the literature, while for their weights, the experts' judgement was introduced by implementing the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), in the framework of the ATLANTIS research program. According to the results, seven regions were recognized as suitable, with a potential energy storage capacity from 1.09 to 5.16 GWh. Particularly, the present study's results reveal that 9.27% (212,884 m
2 ) of the area had a very low suitability, 15.83% (363,599 m2 ) had a low suitability, 23.99% (550,998 m2 ) had a moderate suitability, 24.99% (573,813 m2 ) had a high suitability, and 25.92% (595,125 m2 ) had a very high suitability for the construction of the upper reservoir. The proposed semi-automatic geospatial workflow introduces an innovative tool that can be applied to open pit mines globally to identify the optimum design for an HPHS system depending on the existing lower reservoir.- Published
