This paper focuses on two models used for the determination of power loss components in steel samples under dynamic magnetizing conditions. The considered models differ in their approach as far as the possibility of distinguishing bulk and localized eddy currents is concerned. Two samples of non-oriented electrical steel differing in silicon weight contents are the subject of experiments. In this work we have described the new mathematical approach, with spectral analysis of the data to evaluate position and motion in the „„open field““ experiments. The aim of this work is to introduce several new parameters mathematically derived from experimental data by means of spectral analysis, and to quantitatively estimate the quality of the motion. Two original software packages (TRACKER and POSTPROC) were used for transforming a video data to a log file, suitable for further computational analysis, and to perform analysis from the log file. As an example, results obtained from the experiments with Wistar rats in the „open field“ test are included. The test group of animals was treated with diazepam. Our results demonstrate that all the calculated parameters, such as movement variability, acceleration and deceleration, were significantly lower in the test group compared to the control group. We believe that the application of parameters obtained by spectral analysis could be of great significance in assessing the locomotion impairment in any kind of motion. The silicon carbide powders are prepared by carbothermal reduction of domestic mineral resources (white and brown sepiolite), at relatively low temperatures (1200 - 1600oC). Carbothermal reduction process is greatly influenced by chemical composition of sepiolites and type of carbon used. Obtained SiC powders consist of fine β-SiC particles and did not retain the fibrous morphology of sepiolites. Catalytical influence of Fe is attributed to formation of iron-silicide and its potentionaly important role in removal of Mg-species, i.e. reduction of Mg2SiO4 and MgO into Mg(g).

This paper shows an analysis of torque ripple reduction in modified DTC algorithm by using multiple voltage vectors with the appropriate multilevel hysteresis controller. A short theoretical background of classical and proposed DTC algorithm was given at the beginning. Experimental results of the proposed DTC algorithm, implemented on digital signal processor F2812, were analysed in comparison with classical DTC. It is shown that the torque ripple can be reduced by selecting voltage vectors with an appropriate intensity. Motor current oversampling was used to analyse the estimated torque behaviour during one DSP sampling period. Furthermore, the analysis of torque ripple reduction with oversampled torque values was conducted in relation to the number of available voltage vectors. The analysis shows that the proposed DTC algorithm allows significant torque ripple reduction while retaining the simplicity, small computational burden and good dynamic characteristics of the classical DTC.

The glycine nitrate procedure (GNP) is a method that proved to be the easiest and most effective method for controlling the composition and morphology during the synthesis of Co 0.9 R 0.1 MoO 4 (R = Ho, Yb, Gd). This method of the combustion process achieves control of stoichiometry, homogeneity, and purity. Metal nitrates and glycine were mixed in the appropriate stoichiometric ratios to produce Co 0.9 R 0.1 MoO 4 (R = Ho, Yb, Gd). The samples obtained by the mentioned method were further subjected to different characterization methods such as differential thermal analyses (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and nitrogen adsorption method. A high level of anisotropy of the shape and size of particles in the form of agglomerates was found. Also, there are noticeable differences in the microstructure and plate crystals. The color of the synthesized sample changes from darker to lighter shades after thermal treatments. There are pronounced changes in the dominant wavelength (nm) and color purity between the initial sample and the sample after heating (1100 °C) due to the concentration of Co.

Hardfacing is a welding-related technique aimed at depositing a harder and tougher layer onto a softer, less wear-resistant substrate or base metal. This process enhances the abrasion resistance of the component, increasing its durability under working conditions. A key feature of hardfacing is dilution, which refers to the mixing of the hardfacing layer and the base metal. In this study, shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) was employed to hardface structural steel using chromium carbide vanadium consumables, with results compared to AISI D2 cold-work tool steel. Four different SMAW parameters were tested, and the abrasive test was conducted against SiC discs. Wear rate, represented by the wear loss rate, was correlated to microstructure, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, hardness, microhardness, and surface roughness. The results showed that key SMAW parameters, such as welding speed and current, significantly influence wear resistance. Specifically, slower welding speeds and higher currents, which result in greater heat input, led to the increased wear resistance of the deposited layer through the mechanism of the inoculation of larger and harder carbides.

Porous anorthite (CaAl 2 Si 2 O 8 ) ceramics, suitable for thermal insulation in buildings, were obtained using waste seashells as a source of CaO, kaolin as a source of Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 and banana peel as a pore former. Changing the volume of banana peel as well as the processing temperature was found to be an effective approach to control the thermo-mechanical properties of the obtained anorthite ceramics. The sintering of powder compacts containing up to 30 wt% banana peel at temperatures ranging from 1100 to 1200 °C resulted in anorthite ceramics possessing up to 45% open porosity, a compressive strength between 13 and 92 MPa, a bulk density between 1.87 and 2.62 g/cm 3 and thermal conductivity between 0.097 and 3.5 W/mK. It was shown that waste materials such as seashells and banana peel can be used to obtain cost-effective thermal insulation in buildings.

Thermo-chemical conversion via the pyrolysis of cigarette butt (CB) filters was successfully valorized and upcycled in the pre-carbonization and carbonization stages. The pre-carbonization stage (devolatilization) of the precursor material (cellulose acetate filter, r-CAcF) was analyzed by micro-scale experiments under non-isothermal conditions using TG-DTG-DTA and DSC techniques. The results of a detailed kinetic study showed that the decomposition of r-CAcF takes place via complex mechanisms, including consecutive reaction steps and two single-step reactions. Consecutive stages include the α -transition referred to as a cellulose polymorphic transformation (cellulose I → II) through crystallization mechanism changes, where a more thermodynamically ordered system was obtained. It was found that the transformation rate of cellulose I → II ('cellulose regeneration') is strongly affected by the presence of alkali metals and the deacetylation process. Two single-step reactions showed significant overlapping behavior, which involves a nucleation-controlled scission mechanism (producing levoglucosan, gaseous products, and abundant radicals) and hydrolytic decomposition of cellulose by catalytic cleavage of glycosidic bonds with the presence of an acidic catalyst. A macro-scale experiment showed that the operating temperature and heating rate had the most notable effects on the total surface area of the manufactured carbon. A substantial degree of mesoporosity with a median pore radius of 3.1695 nm was identified. The presence of macroporosity on the carbon surface and acidic surface functional groups was observed.

This paper considers the problem of finding the position of a passive target using noisy time difference of arrival (TDOA) measurements, obtained from multiple transmitters and a single receiver. The maximum likelihood (ML) estimator's objective function is extremely nonlinear and non-convex, making it impossible to use traditional optimization techniques. In this regard, this paper proposes the chaos-enhanced adaptive hybrid butterfly particle swarm optimization algorithm, named CAHBPSO, as the hybridization of butterfly optimization (BOA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms, to estimate passive target position. In the proposed algorithm, an adaptive strategy is employed to update the sensory fragrance of BOA algorithm, and chaos theory is incorporated into the inertia weight of PSO algorithm. Furthermore, an adaptive switch probability is employed to combine global and local search phases of BOA with the PSO algorithm. Additionally, the semidefinite programming is employed to convert the considered problem into a convex one. The statistical comparison on CEC2014 benchmark problems shows that the proposed algorithm provides a better performance compared to well-known algorithms. The CAHBPSO method surpasses the BOA, PSO and semidefinite programming (SDP) algorithms for a broad spectrum of noise, according to simulation findings, and achieves the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB).

The impact of urbanization and modern agricultural practice has led to accelerated eutrophication of aquatic ecosystems, which has resulted in the massive development of cyanobacteria. Very often, in response to various environmental influences, cyanobacteria produce potentially carcinogenic cyanotoxins. Long-term human exposure to cyanotoxins, through drinking water as well as recreational water (i.e., rivers or lakes), can cause serious health consequences. In order to overcome this problem, this paper presents the synthesis of completely new activated carbons and their potential application in contaminated water treatment. The synthesis and characterization of new active carbon materials obtained from waste biomass, date-palm leaf stalks (P_AC) and black alder cone-like flowers (A_AC) of reliable physical and chemical characteristics were presented in this article. The commercial activated carbon (C_AC) was also examined for the purpose of comparisons with the obtained materials. The detailed characterization of materials was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), low-temperature N 2 physisorption, and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Preliminary analyzes of the adsorption capacities of all activated carbon materials were conducted on water samples from Aleksandrovac Lake (Southern part of Serbia), as a eutrophic lake, in order to remove Cyanobacteria from water. The results after 24 h showed removal efficiencies for P_AC, A_AC, and C_AC of 99.99%, 99.99% and 89.79%, respectively.

Concept of composite road safety index is a popular and relatively new concept among road safety experts around the world. As there is a constant need for comparison among different units (countries, municipalities, roads, etc.) there is need to choose an adequate method which will make comparison fair to all compared units. Usually comparisons using one specific indicator (parameter which describes safety or unsafety) can end up with totally different ranking of compared units which is quite complicated for decision maker to determine "real best performers". Need for composite road safety index is becoming dominant since road safety presents a complex system where more and more indicators are constantly being developed to describe it. Among wide variety of models and developed composite indexes, a decision maker can come to even bigger dilemma than choosing one adequate risk measure. As DEA and TOPSIS are well-known mathematical models and have recently been increasingly used for risk evaluation in road safety, we used efficiencies (composite indexes) obtained by different models, based on DEA and TOPSIS, to present PROMETHEE-RS model for selection of optimal method for composite index. Method for selection of optimal composite index is based on three parameters (average correlation, average rank variation and average cluster variation) inserted into a PROMETHEE MCDM method in order to choose the optimal one. The idea of isolated organ perfusion, a precursor of cardiopulmonary bypass, came by Legalois in 1812. First isolated organ perfusion was described by Loebell in 1849. The first closed system for oxygenation and returning the blood through arteries was created by Frey and Gruber in 1885. Gibbon Jr. is considered the father of extracorporeal circulation. In spring of 1934 he began constructing a machine for extracorporeal circulation in Boston. He published the first description of this system in 1937. Gibbon won the grant of the International Business Machines Corporation for developing the machine in 1947. Together they developed Model I in 1949 and Model II in 1951. After a few unsuccessful attempts in 1952, the first successful surgical intervention on the heart (closure of atrial septal defect) using cardiopulmonary bypass was performed on May 6, 1953. In 1945, Kirklin and his working group reported on a series of eight successfully treated patients in a row who underwent surgery with extracorporeal circulation. First successful valve surgery under the direct vision was performed by Dodrill in 1952, using his “Michigan Heart” machine as a right heart bypass. Using cardiopulmonary bypass, cardiac surgeons can deal with the complex cardiac pathology and save millions of lives.

Background/aim: Hyperglicemia is common in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and is associated with high risk of mortality and morbidity. Relationship between admission plasma glucose (APG) levels and mortality in diabetic and nondiabetic patients with STEMI needs further investigation. The aim of this study was to analyse the short- and long-term prognostic significance of APG levels in patients with STEMI with and without diabetes., Methods: This study included 115 patients with STEMI, 86 (74.8%) nondiabetic and 29 (25.2%) dibaetic patients, in which we performed a prospective analysis of the relationship between APG levels and short- and long-term mortality., Results: Comparison of APG levels between nondiabetic (8.32 +/- 2.4 mmol/L) and diabetic (10.09 +/- 2.5 mmol/L) patients showed statistically significantly higher average APG levels in diabetic patients (p = 0.001). In all patients observed who died either after one month or one year after STEMI, average APG values were significantly higher in comparison with those in survived patients. There was no statistical significance in average APG levels in the diabetic patients with STEMI who died after one month and those who survived (10.09 +/- 2.68 vs 10.0 +/- 2.51 mmol/L, respectively; p = 0.657), as well as those who died after one year and those who survived (10.1 +/- 1.92 vs 10.09 +/- 2.8 mmol/L, respectively; p = 0.996). There was, however, statistical significance in average APG levels in the nondiabetic patients with STEMI who died after one month and those who survived (9.97 +/- 2.97 vs 7.91 +/- 2.08 mmol/L, respectively; p = 0.001), as well as those who died after one year and those who survived (9.17 +/- 2.49 vs 7.84 +/- 2.24 mmol/L, respectively; p = 0.013)., Conclusion: Acute hyperglicemia in the settings of STEMI worsenes the prognosis in patients with and without diabetes. Our study showed that nondiabetic patients with high APG levels are at higher risk of mortality than patients with a known history of diabetes.

In this paper we describe a modified intestinal perfusion technique for investigation of bioadhesion phenomena. This technique is an in vitro method with well standardized experimental conditions which measures the intestinal intraluminal pressure and its oscillation. This also allows the vitality of the intestinal segment used in the experimental to be checked. Our results suggest that the longest adhesion occurred with polyacrylic acid, in comparison with carboxymethylcellulose sodium and the shortest with hydroxypropylcellulose.

In this work we tried to perform a dynamic analysis of coronary vascular response to histamine, using a simple mathematical analysis as a first step in the better understanding of complex histamine effects on coronary blood vessels of the isolated guinea pig heart. So, we defined more parameters, such as: I and delta I to quantify the intensity of coronary perfusion pressure (CPP) change, T and dt to quantify the time CPP change occurs and D to characterize the intensity and duration of CPP change, i.e. to quantify the dynamics of this change.

Tiazofurine is a selective inhibitor of the enzyme inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase, and exhibits potent antitumor activity. Considering the potential side effects on the heart, [3H] tiazofurine uptake into the cardiomyocytes, as well as the mechanism of transport, were studied in the isolated perfused guinea pig heart, using the rapid single circulation, paired-tracer technique. The maximal cellular uptake (Umax) of [3H] tiazofurine ranged from 19% to 25% of the injected dose, with total cellular uptake (Utot) ranging 12.1-15.6%. The addition of unlabeled tiazofurine caused inhibition of [3H] tiazofurine uptake, with a Umax value of 9.06 +/- 4.6%. Therefore, the uptake of tiazofurine into cardiomyocytes could be considered a saturable process. The inhibition of [3H] tiazofurine uptake caused by adenosine and dipyridamole was of the same degree as the inhibition by unlabeled tiazofurine. Thus, it can be assumed that nucleosides' transport system(s) are involved in transport of tiazofurine into myocardial cells.

L-Arginine is the physiological substrate for the formation of nitric oxide (NO) and accounts for the biological activity of endothelium-derived relaxing factor. We have studied L-arginine transport in the heart using a rapid dual-isotope dilution technique. The time course of L-[3H]arginine uptake (extraction) by the isolated perfused guinea-pig heart was found to occur in two phases. The first phase reached a plateau in 6.6 +/- 0.6 s and lasted 8.8 +/- 0.7 s, whereas the second phase developed a plateau after 16.3 +/- 0.8 s. The first phase of maximal uptake (Umax,1) accounted for 13.4 +/- 1.4% of the total uptake and the second (Umax,2) for 32.3 +/- 1.8%. The two phases of uptake were inhibited by unlabelled L-arginine in a dose-dependent manner, which suggests that both phases are carrier mediated. The degree of inhibition of Umax,1 and Umax,2 by unlabelled L-arginine was not significantly different. Studies of the kinetics of uptake of these processes revealed an apparent Km,1 of 183 +/- 10 microM with a Vmax,1 of 50 +/- 10 nmol min-1 g-1 for the first phase and Km,2 of 167 +/- 14 microM with a Vmax,2 of 93 +/- 13 nmol min-1 g-1 for the second phase of uptake. These results suggest a similar affinity for the receptors of both transport systems, but with different values for Vmax (P < 0.05). In contrast, 1 mM unlabelled D-arginine had no effect on either the first or second phase of uptake of L-[3H]arginine by the heart, which suggests that these processes are stereospecific. In the presence of the L-stereoisomer of nitro-arginine-mono-methyl ester (L-NAME), a potent inhibitor of NO synthesis, the Umax,1 was inhibited by about 60% while Umax,2 was inhibited by only 20%, which suggests that there is a difference in the effect of L-NAME on the two phases of L-arginine uptake. The first phase most probably represents uptake into the capillary wall, i.e. endothelium and smooth muscle, while the second phase represents entry into the extra-endothelial compartment, i.e. the cardiac myocytes and fibroblasts.
