Abstract: Sustained and intermittent hypoxia produce vasoconstriction, arterial remodeling, and hypertension in the lung. Stromal interaction molecule (STIM)-activated transient receptor potential channels (TRPC) and calcium release-activated calcium channel protein (ORAI) channels (STOC) play key roles in the progression of pulmonary hypertension in pre-clinical models of animals subjected to sustained and intermittent hypoxia. The available evidence supports the theory that oxidative stress and hypoxic inducible factors upregulate and activate STIM-activated TRPC-ORAI Ca2+ channels, contributing to the pulmonary remodeling and hypertension induced by sustained hypoxia. However, less is known about the effects of oxidative stress and hypoxic inducible factors on the modulation of STIM-activated TRPC-ORAI channels following chronic intermittent hypoxia. In this review, we examined the emerging evidence supporting the theory that oxidative stress and hypoxic inducible factors induced by intermittent hypoxia upregulate and activate STIM-activated TRPC-ORAI Ca2+ channels. In addition, we used bioinformatics tools to search public databases for the genes involved in the upregulation of STIMactivated TRPC-ORAI Ca2+ channels and compare the differential gene expression and biological processes induced by intermittent and sustained hypoxia in lung cells.

The carotid body (CB) is the main peripheral chemoreceptor for arterial respiratory gases O2and CO2and pH, eliciting reflex ventilatory, cardiovascular, and humoral responses to maintain homeostasis. This review examines the fundamental biology underlying CB chemoreceptor function, its contribution to integrated physiological responses, and its role in maintaining health and potentiating disease. Emphasis is placed on 1) transduction mechanisms in chemoreceptor (type I) cells, highlighting the role played by the hypoxic inhibition of O2-dependent K+channels and mitochondrial oxidative metabolism, and their modification by intracellular molecules and other ion channels; 2) synaptic mechanisms linking type I cells and petrosal nerve terminals, focusing on the role played by the main proposed transmitters and modulatory gases, and the participation of glial cells in regulation of the chemosensory process; 3) integrated reflex responses to CB activation, emphasizing that the responses differ dramatically depending on the nature of the physiological, pathological, or environmental challenges, and the interactions of the chemoreceptor reflex with other reflexes in optimizing oxygen delivery to the tissues; and 4) the contribution of enhanced CB chemosensory discharge to autonomic and cardiorespiratory pathophysiology in obstructive sleep apnea, congestive heart failure, resistant hypertension, and metabolic diseases and how modulation of enhanced CB reactivity in disease conditions may attenuate pathophysiology.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays an important role in the coordination of several physiological functions including sleep/wake process. Significant changes in ANS activity occur during wake-to-sleep transition maintaining the adequate cardiorespiratory regulation and brain activity. Since sleep is a complex homeostatic function, partly regulated by the ANS, it is not surprising that sleep disruption trigger and/or evidence symptoms of ANS impairment. Indeed, several studies suggest a bidirectional relationship between impaired ANS function (i.e. enhanced sympathetic drive), and the emergence/development of sleep disorders. Furthermore, several epidemiological studies described a strong association between sympathetic-mediated diseases and the development and maintenance of sleep disorders resulting in a vicious cycle with adverse outcomes and increased mortality risk. However, which and how the sleep/wake control and ANS circuitry becomes affected during the progression of ANS-related diseases remains poorly understood. Thus, understanding the physiological mechanisms underpinning sleep/wake-dependent sympathetic modulation could provide insights into diseases involving autonomic dysfunction. The purpose of this review is to explore potential neural mechanisms involved in both the onset/maintenance of sympathetic-mediated diseases (Rett syndrome, congenital central hypoventilation syndrome, obstructive sleep apnoea, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart failure, hypertension, and neurodegenerative diseases) and their plausible contribution to the generation of sleep disorders in order to review evidence that may serve to establish a causal link between sleep disorders and heightened sympathetic activity.

Hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweating beyond thermoregulatory needs that affects patients' quality of life. It results from an excessive stimulation of eccrine sweat glands in the skin by the sympathetic nervous system. Hyperhidrosis may be primary or secondary to an underlying cause. Nocturnal hyperhidrosis is associated with different sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome/periodic limb movement during sleep and narcolepsy. The major cause of the hyperhidrosis is sympathetic overactivity and, in the case of narcolepsy type 1, orexin deficiency may also contribute. In this narrative review, we will provide an outline of the possible mechanisms underlying sudomotor dysfunction and the resulting nocturnal hyperhidrosis in these different sleep disorders and explore its clinical relevance.

Emergent evidence indicates that the carotid body (CB) chemoreceptor may sense systemic inflammatory molecules and is an afferent arm of the anti-inflammatory reflex. Moreover, a proinflammatory milieu within the CB is involved in the enhanced CB chemosensory responsiveness to oxygen following sustained and intermittent hypoxia. In this review, we focus on the physiopathological participation of CBs in inflammatory diseases, such as sepsis and intermittent hypoxia.

Sustained chronic hypoxia (CH) produces morphological and functional changes in the carotid body (CB). Nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) play a major role as modulators of the CB oxygen chemosensory process. To characterize the effects of CH related to normoxia (Nx) on gene expression, particularly on ET-1 and NO pathways, primary cultures of rat CB cells were exposed to 7 days of CH. Total RNA was extracted, and cDNA-32P was synthesized and hybridized with 1,185 genes printed on a nylon membrane Atlas cDNA Expression Array. Out of 324 differentially expressed genes, 184 genes were upregulated, while 140 genes were downregulated. The cluster annotation and protein network analyses showed that both NO and ET-1 signaling pathways were significantly enriched and key elements of each pathway were differentially expressed. Thus, we assessed the effect of CH at the protein level of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms and ET-1 receptors. CH induced an increase in the expression of endothelial NOS, inducible NOS, and ETB. During CH, the administration of SNAP, a NO donor, upregulated ETB. Treatment with Tezosentan (ET-1 receptor blocker) during CH upregulated all three NOS isoforms, while the NOS blocker L-NAME induced upregulation of iNOS and ETBand downregulated the protein levels of ETA. These results show that CH for 7 days changed the cultured cell CB gene expression profile, the NO and ET-1 signaling pathways were highly enriched, and these two signaling pathways interfered with the protein expression of each other.

Background and objective Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), one of the main features of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), enhances carotid body-mediated chemoreflex and induces hypertension and breathing disorders. The carbamylated form of erythropoietin (cEpo) may have beneficial effects as it retains its antioxidant/anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective profile without increasing red blood cells number. However, no studies have evaluated the potential therapeutic effect of cEpo on CIH-related cardiorespiratory disorders. We aimed to determine whether cEpo normalized the CIH-enhanced carotid body ventilatory chemoreflex, the hypertension and ventilatory disorders in rats. Methods Male Sprague-Dawley rats (250 g) were exposed to CIH (5% O2, 12/h, 8 h/day) for 28 days. cEPO (20 μg/kg, i.p) was administrated from day 21 every other day for one more week. Cardiovascular and respiratory function were assessed in freely moving animals. Results Twenty-one days of CIH increased carotid body-mediated chemoreflex responses as evidenced by a significant increase in the hypoxic ventilatory response (FiO2 10%) and triggered irregular eupneic breathing, active expiration, and produced hypertension. cEpo treatment significantly reduced the carotid body--chemoreflex responses, normalizes breathing patterns and the hypertension in CIH. In addition, cEpo treatment effectively normalized carotid body chemosensory responses evoked by acute hypoxic stimulation in CIH rats. Conclusion Present results strongly support beneficial cardiorespiratory therapeutic effects of cEpo during CIH exposure.

The carotid body (CB) is considered the main O2 chemoreceptor, which contributes to cardiorespiratory homeostasis and ventilatory acclimatization. In clinical medicine, the most common pathologies associated with the CB are tumours. However, a growing body of evidence supports the novel idea that an enhanced CB chemosensory discharge contributes to the autonomic dysfunction and pathological consequences in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), hypertension, systolic heart failure (HF) and cardiometabolic diseases. Heightened CB chemosensory reactivity elicited by oxidative stress has been involved in sympathetic hyperactivity, cardiorespiratory instability, hypertension and insulin resistance. CB ablation, which reduces sympathetic hyperactivity, decreases hypertension in animal models of OSA and hypertension, eliminates breathing instability and improves animal survival in HF, and restores insulin tolerance in cardiometabolic models. Thus, data obtained from preclinical studies highlight the importance of the CB in the progression of sympathetic-related diseases, supporting the idea that appeasing the enhanced CB chemosensory drive may be useful in improving cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine alterations. Accordingly, CB ablation has been proposed and used as a treatment for moderating resistant hypertension and HF-induced sympathetic hyperactivity in humans. First-in-human studies have shown that CB ablation reduces sympathetic overactivity, transiently reduces severe hypertension and improves quality of life in HF patients. Thus, CB ablation would be a useful therapy to reverse sympathetic overactivation in HF and severe hypertension, but caution is required before it is widely used due to the crucial physiological function played by the CB. Further studies in preclinical models are required to assess side-effects of CB ablation.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), featured by chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), is an independent risk for systemic hypertension (HTN) and is associated with pulmonary hypertension (PH). The precise mechanisms underlying pulmonary vascular remodeling and PH in OSA are not fully understood. However, it has been suggested that lung tissue hypoxia, oxidative stress, and pro-inflammatory mediators following CIH exposure may contribute to PH. New evidences obtained in preclinical OSA models support that an enhanced carotid body (CB) chemosensory reactiveness to oxygen elicits sympathetic and renin-angiotensin system (RAS) overflow, which contributes to HTN. Moreover, the ablation of the CBs abolished the sympathetic hyperactivity and HTN in rodents exposed to CIH. Accordingly, it is plausible that the enhanced CB chemosensory reactivity may contribute to the pulmonary vascular remodeling and PH through the overactivation of the sympathetic-RAS axis. This hypothesis is supported by the facts that (i) CB stimulation increases pulmonary arterial pressure, (ii) denervation of sympathetic fibers in pulmonary arteries reduces pulmonary remodeling and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in humans, and (iii) administration of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) or blockers of Ang II type 1 receptor (ATR1) ameliorates pulmonary remodeling and PH in animal models. In this review, we will discuss the supporting evidence for a plausible contribution of the CB-induced sympathetic-RAS axis overflow on pulmonary vascular remodeling and PH induced by CIH, the main characteristic of OSA.

Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), the main feature of obstructive sleep apnea, enhances carotid body (CB) chemosensory responses to hypoxia and produces autonomic dysfunction, cardiac arrhythmias, and hypertension. We tested whether autonomic alterations, arrhythmogenesis, and the progression of hypertension induced by CIH depend on the enhanced CB chemosensory drive, by ablation of the CB chemoreceptors. Male Sprague–Dawley rats were exposed to control (Sham) conditions for 7 days and then to CIH (5% O 2 , 12/h 8 h/d) for a total of 28 days. At 21 days of CIH exposure, rats underwent bilateral CB ablation and then exposed to CIH for 7 additional days. Arterial blood pressure and ventilatory chemoreflex response to hypoxia were measured in conscious rats. In addition, cardiac autonomic imbalance, cardiac baroreflex gain, and arrhythmia score were assessed during the length of the experiments. In separate experimental series, we measured extracellular matrix remodeling content in cardiac atrial tissue and systemic oxidative stress. CIH induced hypertension, enhanced ventilatory response to hypoxia, induced autonomic imbalance toward sympathetic preponderance, reduced baroreflex gain, and increased arrhythmias and atrial fibrosis. CB ablation normalized blood pressure, reduced ventilatory response to hypoxia, and restored cardiac autonomic and baroreflex function. In addition, CB ablation reduced the number of arrhythmias, but not extracellular matrix remodeling or systemic oxidative stress, suggesting that reductions in arrhythmia incidence during CIH were related to normalization of cardiac autonomic balance. Present results show that autonomic alterations induced by CIH are critically dependent on the CB and support a main role for the CB in the CIH-induced hypertension.

Upon stimulation CB chemoreceptors cells release one or more transmitters to excite sensory nerve fibers of the carotid sinus nerve. While several neurotransmitters have been described to contribute to the CB chemosensory process less is known about modulatory molecules. Recent data suggest that erythropoietin (Epo) is involved in the control of ventilation, and it has been shown that Epo receptor is constitutively expressed in the CB chemoreceptors, suggesting a possible role for Epo in regulation of CB function. Therefore, in the present study we aimed to determine whether exogenous applications of Epo modulate the hypoxic and hypercapnic CB chemosensory responses. An abnormal heightened carotid body (CB) chemoreflex, which produces autonomic dysfunction and sympathetic overactivation, is the common hallmark of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), resistant hypertension, systolic heart failure (HF), and cardiometabolic diseases. Accordingly, it has been proposed that the elimination of the CB chemosensory input to the brainstem may reduce the autonomic and cardiorespiratory alterations in sympathetic-associated diseases in humans. A growing body of evidence obtained in preclinical animal models support that an enhanced CB discharge produces sympathetic hyperactivity, baroreflex sensitivity and heart rate variability impairment, breathing instability, hypertension, and insulin resistance. The elimination CB chemosensory input reduces the sympathetic hyperactivity, the elevated arterial blood pressure in OSA and hypertensive models, abolishes breathing instability and improves animal survival in HF models, and restores insulin tolerance in metabolic models. These results highlight the role played by the enhanced CB drive in the progression of sympathetic-related diseases and support the proposal that the surgical ablation of the CB is useful to restore the autonomic balance and normal cardiorespiratory function in humans. Accordingly, the CB ablation has been used in pilot human studies as a therapeutic treatment for resistant hypertension and HF-induced sympathetic hyperactivity. In this review, I will discuss the supporting evidence for a crucial contribution of the CB in the central autonomic dysfunction and the pros and cons of the CB ablation as a therapy to revert autonomic overactivation. The CB ablation could be a useful method to reverse the enhanced chemoreflex in HF and severe hypertension, but caution is required before extensive use of bilateral CB ablation, which abolished ventilatory responses to hypoxia and may impair baroreceptor function.

Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), main feature of obstructive sleep apnea, produces nitro-oxidative stress, which contributes to potentiate carotid body (CB) chemosensory discharges and sympathetic-adrenal-axis activity, leading to hypertension. The MnSOD enzymatic activity, a key enzyme on oxidative stress control, is reduced by superoxide-induced nitration. However, the effects of CIH-induced nitration on MnSOD enzymatic activity in the CB and adrenal gland are not known. We studied the effects of CIH on MnSOD protein and immunoreactive (MnSOD-ir) levels in the CB, adrenal gland and superior cervical ganglion (SCG), and on 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT-ir), CuZnSOD (CuZnSOD-ir), MnSOD nitration, and its enzymatic activity in the CB and adrenal gland from male Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to CIH for 7 days. CIH increased 3-NT-ir in CB and adrenal gland, whereas MnSOD-ir increased in the CB and in adrenal cortex, but not in the whole adrenal medulla or SCG. CIH nitrated MnSOD in the CB and adrenal medulla, but its activity decreased in the adrenal gland. CuZnSOD-ir remained unchanged in both tissues. All changes observed were prevented by ascorbic acid treatment. Present results show that CIH for 7 days produced MnSOD nitration, but failed to reduce its activity in the CB, because of the increased protein level.

Arterial blood pressure (BP) increased in healthy humans in response to isometric handgrip (IHG), but the pattern of the relative contribution of cardiac output (CO) and total peripheral resistance (TPR) changes to the pressor response is different among individuals. We investigated weather patients with recurrent vasovagal syncope (VVS) have a similar pattern of individual CO, TPR and pressor responses to IHG, as healthy subjects.32 patients (27.5 ± 2.6 years), and 30 age-matched controls. Autonomic function was evaluated using finger-photoplethysmography to measure BP and heart rate (HR) response to gravitational stress (ΔBP, ΔHR), Valsalva maneuver (VM) and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), and BP HR and CO changes during IHG.ΔBP, ΔHR, VM and IHG tests did not show significant difference between VVS patients and controls, although BRS was lower in VVS group (p 0.05). Pattern of individual pressor, CO and TPR responses to IHG was significantly different between VVS patients and healthy subjects (Chi square, p = 0.0246). In 100% of the healthy subjects BP increased during IHG, but in a 19% of the patients BP (CO and TPR) did not increased during IHG. In VVS patients, the autonomic tests (ΔBP, ΔHR, VM and BRS) showed no significant differences between the group with BP increase and the group without pressor response.In VVS patients, the pattern of individual CO and TPR changes to IGH is different from healthy subjects. VVS patients may present an abnormal regulation of cardiovascular responses to IHG, with preserved cardiovagal and cardiac sympathetic function.

Brains were removed and processed to measure IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α in the NTS using qPCR and immunofluorescence. The mRNA levels were significantly augmented in the NTS of rats exposed during 21 days to CIH compared with control animals. In addition, a significant increase of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α immunofluorescence was found in the NTS at day 28 of CIH exposure compared with control rats. Present results suggest that proinflammatory cytokines in the NTS may contribute to the maintenance of hypertension in CIH-exposed animals.

Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), the main characteristic of obstructive sleep apnoea, enhances carotid body (CB) chemosensory discharges during normoxia and hypoxia and elicits hypertension. These alterations are attributed to oxidative stress, because antioxidants prevent the enhanced CB chemosensory discharges and the hypertension. In this report, we discuss new evidence supporting the suggestion that oxidative stress-induced upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (i.e. tumour necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β )i n the CB is involved in the chemosensory potentiation and the hypertension following CIH. Anti-inflammatory treatment with ibuprofen prevents the increased tumour necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β levels in the CB and the hypertension, but does not reduce the enhanced chemosensoryhypoxicresponseandthelocaloxidativestressintheCB.Incontrast,antioxidant treatment with ascorbic acid prevents the increase in cytokine concentrations and CB oxidative stress, the chemosensory potentiation and the hypertension. Thus, the enhanced CB chemosensory responses to hypoxia depend critically on the oxidative stress, but not on the increased tumour necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β in the CB. We discuss a possible role for pro-inflammatory cytokines in development of the hypertension produced by CIH, acting on cardiorespiratory centres located in the CNS.

The present work was aimed to evaluate the contribution of interoception to the autonomic and behavioral responses to hypoxia. To address this issue, we studied whether the inactivation of the primary interoceptive posterior insular cortex (pIC) may disrupt the autonomic and behavioral effects of hypoxia in conscious rats. Rats were implanted with telemetric transmitters and microinjection cannulae placed bilaterally in the pIC. After one week, rats were injected with bupivacaine (26.5 μM 1 μL/side) and saline (1 μL/side) into the pIC, and exposed to hypoxia (∼6% O 2 ) for 150 s, and autonomic and behavioral responses were recorded. Hypoxia produces hypertension, tachycardia followed by bradycardia, and hypothermia. When O 2 dropped to ∼8%, rats showed escape behavior. Baseline cardiovascular variables and the pattern of hypoxia-induced autonomic and behavioral responses were not disrupted by pIC inactivation. However, pIC inactivation produced a modest but significant temperature decrease, higher bradycardic and hypertensive responses to hypoxia, and a minimal delay in escape onset. In addition, we measured the hypoxia-induced Fos activation in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), the periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) and the pIC, which are key components of the interoceptive pathway. Hypoxia increased the number of Fos-positive neurons in the NTS and PAG, but not in the pIC. Present results suggest that pIC is not involved in the hypoxia-induced behavioral response, which seems to be processed in the NTS and PAG, but has a role in the efferent control of autonomic changes coping with hypoxia.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a common breathing disorder, is recognized as an independent risk factor for systemic hypertension. Among the alterations induced by OSA, the chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) is considered the main factor for the hypertension. Exposure of rodents to CIH is the gold-standard method to study the mechanisms involved in the cardiovascular alterations induced by OSA. Although it is well known that CIH produces hypertension, the underlying mechanisms are not totally elucidated. It is likely that the CIH-induced systemic oxidative stress and inflammation may elicit endothelial dysfunction and increase the arterial blood pressure. In addition, OSA patients and animals exposed to CIH show sympathetic hyperactivity and potentiated cardiorespiratory responses to acute hypoxia, suggesting that CIH enhances the peripheral hypoxic chemoreflex. Recent experimental evidences support the proposal that CIH selectively enhances carotid body (CB) chemosensory reactivity to oxygen, which in turn increases sympathetic outflow leading to neurogenic hypertension. In this review, we will discuss the supporting evidence for a critical role of the CB in the generation and maintenance of the hypertension induced by CIH, also, the contribution of oxidative stress to enhance CB chemosensory drive and the activation of sympathetic-related centers in the brain.

Nitric oxide (NO), at physiological concentrations, is a tonic inhibitory modulator of carotid body (CB) chemosensory discharges. NO modulates the chemoreception process by several mechanisms, indirectly by modifying the vascular tone and oxygen delivery, and directly through the modulation of the excitability of glomus cells and petrosal neurons. In addition to the inhibitory effect, at high concentrations NO has a dual dose-dependent effect on CB chemoreception that depends on the P O 2 . In hypoxic conditions, NO is primarily an inhibitory modulator of CB chemoreception, while in normoxia NO increases the chemosensory discharges. In this review, we will examine new evidence supporting the idea that NO is involved in the CB chemosensory potentiation induced by congestive heart failure (CHF) and chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), the main feature of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Evidence from patients and experimental animal models indicates that CHF and OSA, as well as CIH, potentiate the carotid hypoxic chemoreflexes, contributing to enhance the sympathetic tone. Moreover, animals exposed to CIH or to pacing-induced CHF showed enhanced baseline CB discharges in normoxia and potentiated chemosensory responses to acute hypoxia. Several molecules and pathways are altered in CHF, OSA and CIH, but the available evidence suggests that a reduced NO production in the CB plays an essential role in both diseases, contributing to enhance the CB chemosensory discharges.

Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), a characteristic of sleep obstructive apnea, enhances carotid body (CB) chemosensory responses to hypoxia, but its consequences on CB vascular area and VEGF expression are unknown. Accordingly, we studied the effect of CIH on CB volume, glomus cell numbers, blood vessel diameter and number, and VEGF immunoreactivity (VEGF-ir) in male Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to 5% O2, 12 times/h for 8 h or sham condition for 21 days. We found that CIH did not modify the CB volume or the number of glomus cells but increased VEGF-ir and enlarged the vascular area by increasing the size of the blood vessels, whereas the number of the vessels was unchanged. Because oxidative stress plays an essential role in the CIH-induced carotid chemosensory potentiation, we tested whether antioxidant treatment with ascorbic acid may impede the vascular enlargement and the VEGF upregulation. Ascorbic acid, which prevents the CB chemosensory potentiation, failed to impede the vascular enlargement and the increased VEGF-ir. Thus present results suggest that the CB vascular enlargement induced by CIH is a direct effect of intermittent hypoxia and not secondary to the oxidative stress. Accordingly, the subsequent capillary changes may be secondary to the mechanisms involved in the neural chemosensory plasticity induced by intermittent hypoxia.

Monitoring soil water content coupled with phytomonitoring techniques have been shown to be good tools for irrigation management in avocado orchards. There are many well-tested devices for monitoring soil moisture in orchards but options for measuring plant water status are limited. The objective of this study was to determine whether measuring voltage differences between roots and leaves can be used as a technique to measure plant water status related to soil water content. Root and shoot voltage differences were monitored in young ‘Hass’ avocado trees grafted onto clonal rootstocks grown in containers, and in young seedling ‘Mexicola’ avocado trees grown hydroponically, both experiments carried out under laboratory conditions. In container-grown ‘Hass’ avocado trees, root and shoot voltage differences were initially measured for about 2 h to determine steady state conditions. Plants were then exposed to cycles of soil drying and re-watering. In seedling ‘Mexicola’ trees, electrical signals were measured for at least 75 min in control plants and plants exposed to simulated drought stress. The extracellular electrical potential difference between the base of the trunk and the leaf petiole was continuously monitored after exposing plants to treatments. Results indicated that in ‘Hass’ avocado trees, a change in soil water content induced by root drying and re-watering was accompanied by a slow change in the electrical signal at the leaf petiole which was greatest after 52 and 32 min for root drying and re-watering, respectively. This was related to a decrease in stomatal conductance (gs) of plants exposed to drought. Also, in hydroponic conditions, significant voltage differences occurred in plants exposed to drought simulated by the addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) to the hydroponic medium resulting also in a decrease in gs. These results suggest that it may be possible to use voltage differences measurements as a technique for monitoring physiological responses to soil water content.
