This article examines the significance of the body and its sensory and embodied aspects associated with a historical milieu and set of practices associated with ‘rave’ subculture and its relationship to fashion creativity. It focuses on a personal fashion archive that documents menswear designed in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Using an autoethnographic approach, the study investigates how the design of the garments in the archive was shaped by ways of experiencing and understanding the body that integrated the embodied experiences of moving and dancing with electronic music, the embodied experience of dressing, and the embodied experiences of designing men’s fashion in the years that followed. While rave and electronic dance music cultures received considerable scholarly attention in the mid- to late 1990s, less attention was devoted to men’s fashion and the interaction between fashion design, embodied experience and the rave sensoria. Moreover, while this study lays at the intersection rave and electronic dance music culture, fashion and design, all of which are understood to have European and North American origins, the article considers the way those practices took a unique shape within an Australian context. The contribution aims to provide insight into fashion as part of situated and embodied practices, that take place in local milieus, and the way fashion creativity can be understood not as surface ‘ripples’ moving out from global fashion centres or trickle-down versions of ‘authentic’ fashion developed elsewhere, but as fashion creativity, shaped by global forces, energies, and technologies, and embodied and enacted via local manifestations.

This special issue explores the multifaceted dimensions of men’s fashion, examining its intricacies through the lens of atmospheres. Atmospheres serve a dual role, functioning as a contextual frame that shapes men’s fashion and analytical frameworks that unify diverse influences on masculine dress. Articles within the issue explore the atmospheres of men’s fashion across various settings, including en plein airpainting, online avatars, music videos, performative personas in popular music, raves and military uniforms. Employing historical, visual, textual, ethnographic and practice-led approaches, these investigations shed light on the interplay of spatial, bodily and affective dimensions of fashion. Atmospheres become a bridge, addressing the gap between these dimensions and providing a generative notion to understand interdependent interactions within masculine fashion contexts. Consequently, the issue underscores the significance of men’s fashion as a carrier of social life within broader socio-cultural, technological and political assemblages. By scrutinizing specific instantiations of men’s fashion, the special issue forges connections between typically distinct elements in the field, emphasizing the interdependence of individuals, equipment, technologies, practices and environments.

AbstractThe activity of designing fashion is intimately connected to the bodies of others. While the garments designers conceive enclose wearers’ bodies in direct physical contact, those garments also create opportunities for participation, social connection and inclusion as well as possibilities for amorous encounter, novelty and self-expression. Drawing on the outcomes of a research project investigating somatic experiences in fashion, this article examines the notion of embodied empathy in design practice. The article addresses the potential for fashion designing to be understood and enacted as an empathic practice; one that is grounded in a sensitivity to the embodied experiences of others. In doing so, it advances the notion of body style, a dynamic design lens for fashion that foregrounds movement and somatic experience, based in the unfolding interaction between fashion garments and bodies in co-creative acts of wearing. The article argues such an embodied orientation for fashion design provides an opportunity for designers to redirect their design practices beyond appearances to enable and support bodily comportments. This article raises the question of embodied empathy in the context of current discourses on ethical fashion and responds to the following questions: How might an increased sensitivity to the embodied experiences of wearers shift fashion design practice? And following that, what might be the outcomes of such a shift in orientation?

Past research has documented livestock grazing patterns and dynamics across pastoral landscapes. We used spatial locations of domestic range sheep (Ovis aries)obtained from Global Positioning System collars to study habitat selection on summer mountain habitat North of Scofield Reservoir Utah, United States. Data were collected between the months of July to September 2020. We developed a resource selection function to determine the influence of slope, distance to water, aspect, ruggedness, elevation, and vegetation types on habitat selection by sheep while grazing on summer mountain habitat. We found sheep selected for sites closer to water, with more gentle terrain, higher in elevation, and north-facing slopes. Vegetation types were less predictive, ostensibly due to the lack of species composition information in available geographic information system layers and the possibility of sheep being herded to avoid areas of overuse. Although it is often assumed that sheep use slopes more than their heavier and larger cattle counterparts, overall they tended to avoid steep slopes compared with all other predictor variables. This information on selection for higher elevations and avoidance of steep slopes can be used to improve livestock management practices including flock management that increases sheep foraging patterns and energy efficiency.

This article examines the role of digital video in fashion research. It makes a case for the use of digital video as a valuable tool within the suite of research methods typically used in the field of fashion and dress. Its aim is to demonstrate that digital video can enrich studies of fashion, specifically in its capacity to assist the capture and analysis of visual material unavailable to unmediated perception. Central to this is the technology’s ability to document the dressed body in movement. The article discusses outcomes of a video-based methodology with reference to participatory research activities termed ‘sartorial sessions’. The approach used digital video technology to make possible the collection, analysis and manipulation of embodied material for a close interpretation and analysis as well as for others to encounter. The article demonstrates the way digital media, when used in conjunction with practice-oriented methods, opens up new ways to understand and research the body in fashion. It concludes with reflection on how revelation of a background sartorial vitality opened up by digital technology can shift understanding of fashion from commodities or signs involved in the transmission of messages about wearers, or aesthetic propositions to powerful tools shaping our encounters in the world.

Exotic annual weeds have invaded and transformed western North American ecosystems. Restoration of these invaded sites has been met with low levels of success. Pre-emergent herbicides can effectively control these annual weeds, but this treatment does not allow for the concurrent seeding of desired species. Seeding within a deep, U-shaped furrow following herbicide application may be a method to reduce pre-emergent herbicide effects by transferring the herbicide away from the seed at the time of planting. We investigated this method by spraying plots with or without the pre-emergent herbicide imazapic, then planting with or without a deep furrow. Treatments (i.e., spraying and furrowing) were applied using mechanical equipment within a single pass at six sites. In plots without imazapic, deep furrows generally had higher density and above-ground biomass of seeded species than those without furrows. Similarly, in plots with imazapic, deep furrows generally improved measured plant metrics for the seeded species. For example, plant density in deep furrows ranged from 62% – 97% higher than non-furrow treatments in plots with imazapic and 41% – 89% higher in plots without imazapic. Deep furrows also decreased exotic annual weeds in the first year after planting, but weed reduction was generally more effective when this treatment was applied with imazapic. Overall, this research provides evidence that deep furrows alone can improve seeding success in most instances. Nevertheless, combining herbicide application with deep furrows in a one-pass system should be considered in areas with high weed cover. Due to the substantial soil disturbance caused by deep furrows, this method should be selectively applied, such as constraining the treatment to substantially degraded areas.

Essential hypertension is a clinical diagnosis based on the presence of an elevated systemic blood pressure on physical examination without a clear inciting cause. It has multiple etiologies and is not a homogeneous disorder. Hypertension contributes to the development and progression of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, and antihypertensive treatment reduces the risk of fatal and nonfatal myocardial infarction, stroke, and congestive heart failure. Although hypertension is frequently present in nondiabetic individuals with low levels of proteinuria and chronic kidney disease, reducing blood pressures in this population does not reliably slow nephropathy progression. Many of these patients with recent African ancestry have the primary kidney disease “solidified glomerulosclerosis” that is strongly associated with renal-risk variants in the apolipoprotein L1 gene (APOL1). This kidney disease contributes to secondarily elevated blood pressures. The APOL1-associated spectrum of nondiabetic nephropathy also includes proteinuric kidney diseases, idiopathic focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, collapsing glomerulopathy, severe lupus nephritis, and sickle cell nephropathy. This article reviews relationships between mild to moderate essential hypertension and chronic kidney disease with a focus on the role of APOL1in development of hypertension. Available evidence strongly supports that APOL1renal-risk variants associate with glomerulosclerosis in African Americans, which then causes secondary hypertension, not with essential hypertension per se.

After over 50000 years of interaction between Aboriginal people and changing climates, south-western Australia’s tall forests were first logged less than 200 years ago, initiating persistent conflict. Recent conservation advocacy has resulted in the protection of 49% of these tall forests in statutory reserves, providing an opportunity to implement and benefit from a growing moral consensus on the valuing of these globally significant, tall forest ecosystems. We analysed a cross-section of literature (63 papers, 118 statements) published on these forests over 187 years to identify values framing advocacy. We differentiated four resource-oriented discourses and three discourses giving primacy to social and environmental values over seven eras. Invasion sparked initial uncontrolled exploitation, with the Forests Act 1918 managing competing agricultural and timber advocacy. Following the Colonial and Country Life eras, industrial-scale exploitation of the karri forest region resulted in reaction by increasingly broad sectors of society. Warming and drying in the 21st Century emphasises the importance of intact tall forest and the Indigenous Renaissance discourse. Vesting for a more comprehensive set of values would acknowledge a new moral consensus.

Apolipoprotein L1 gene (APOL1) renal risk variants exhibit strong genetic associations with a spectrum of nondiabetic kidney diseases in individuals with recent African ancestry. Relationships between APOL1kidney risk variants and cardiovascular disease (CVD) susceptibility and CVD-related death remain controversial. Some studies detected an increased risk for CVD, whereas others support protection from death and subclinical CVD and cerebrovascular disease. Because treatments for nondiabetic kidney disease may target this gene and its protein products, it remains critical to clarify the potential extrarenal effects of APOL1kidney risk variants. This review addresses the current literature on APOL1associations with CVD, cerebrovascular disease, and death. Potential causes of disparate results between studies are discussed.

Several landmark trials have assessed the effects of aggressive hypertension control on the progression of nondiabetic chronic kidney disease. Results generally have been disappointing. With the realization that lowering blood pressure, including with renin-angiotensin system blockade, failed to reliably prevent end-stage kidney disease, studies now are analyzing longer-term effects of hypertension control on survival in chronic kidney disease. This commentary reviews the current findings and extends the discussion to apolipoprotein L1 gene by blood pressure (or gene by environment) interactions.

Diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal failure in westernized societies, including the United States. In addition to renal manifestations, complications of poorly controlled diabetes include accelerated atherosclerosis, congestive heart failure, neuropathy, and retinopathy. The estimated total cost of diabetes care in the United States was $174 billion in 2007—a number expected to increase markedly in the coming decades. Clinicians must be able to accurately recognize patients with poor glycemic control to have opportunities to intensify treatment and potentially reduce hyperglycemia-related complications. Detecting hyperglycemia is uniquely difficult in patients with severe kidney disease. This paper reviews the literature on the accuracy of glucose monitoring assays in diabetic patients with advanced nephropathy. Interpretation of commonly used tests is affected to a great extent by the uremic milieu and frequently complicates disease management.

The study and procurement of nuclear materials have been all the rage during the last 100 years. A dozen decades ago physicists and scientists were unlocking hidden nuclear mysteries. Seminal work was done by Marie Curie, née Maria Salomea Sktodowska, a Polish scientist and nuclear pioneer. By observing that air around uranium conducted electricity, Madame Curie discovered that the air was being ionized by energy emanating from the heavy grey metal. Further studies of these odd materials supported her hypothesis that the radiation was due to action at the atomic level, which ran counter to thinking that the atoms were indivisible. For this, she is credited with advancing the theory of this unseen, but powerful force.

Our objective was to determine whether the chronic anabolic effects of β-adrenergic agonists on skeletal muscle are direct and how long they are maintained. We studied acute (6 h) and chronic (1 to 20 d) effects of cimaterol (CIM) on skeletal muscle metabolism and protein accretion by use of close arterial infusion in the hindlimbs of six young steers. Surgical catheterizations were conducted to allow continuous infusion of CIM (.5 μg/min) or saline into the external iliac artery of contralateral hindlimbs and simultaneous sampling for arteriovenous difference measurements. Hindlimb blood flow and net flux of amino acids, glucose, lactate, and NEFA were determined during a basal period before infusion, at 6 h, and at 1, 3, 7, 14, and 20 d of infusion. Cimaterol infusion acutely stimulated blood flow and caused acute mobilization of nitrogen (alanine), NEFA, and lactate from the treated hindlimb. Cimaterol infusion increased net uptake of amino acids (P< .05) in treated and control hindlimbs after 1 d of CIM infusion, but a progressive increase between 1 and 14 d of infusion was observed only in the treated hindlimbs. Net uptake of total amino acids in the treated hindlimb was increased 50 and 80% (P< .05) at 7 and 14 d, respectively, when compared to the control hindlimb and was increased 260% at d 14 when compared with the basal period. Net amino acid uptake was not different between treated and control hindlimbs by d 20 of CIM infusion. Integration of net tyrosine and phenylalanine uptake over the entire infusion period predicted a 10% difference in skeletal muscle protein mass between treated and control hindlimbs. Semitendinosus and semimembranosus muscles in the treated hindlimb contained 9 and 11% greater protein content, respectively (P< .05), at the end of the infusion period. Results provide a quantitative description of the temporal pattern of transient effects of CIM on skeletal muscle metabolism and protein accretion and provide evidence that these are direct effects.

Dose-dependent effects of cimaterol (CIM) on hindlimb metabolism were determined in six steers (247 ± 22 kg BW) using a close arterial infusion. The external iliac vessels of both hindlimbs were catheterized to accommodate measurement of blood flow, circulating concentrations, and net flux of NEFA, lactate, and alpha-amino nitrogen (AAN) during infusion of CIM at 0, .05, .1, .3, .7, 1 and 3µg/min. Close arterial infusion of CIM in the hindlimb of steers can be used to achieve a local concentration elevation that is required to differentiate local and systemic effects in vivo. Calculated plasma threshold CIM concentration required to initiate cardiovascular responses was 21 pg/mL, which resulted from an infusion rate of .3 µg/min. Threshold concentrations of CIM for stimulation of NEFA and lactate net flux in the hindlimb were 38 and 34 pg/mL, respectively, and would be achieved with an infusion rate of .7 µg/min. All measured responses except AAN net flux exhibited significant linear and quadratic dose effects, and responses in the treated hindlimb were always severalfold greater than in the contralateral control hindlimb. Maximal differences between treated and control hindlimb blood flow occurred with a CIM infusion rate of .7 µg/min, but the highest infusion rate (3 µg/min) was required to maximize differences in NEFA and lactate flux. Therefore, to minimize cardiovascular and other systemic responses and optimize direct hindlimb responses, an infusion rate of .5 µg of CIM/min should cause significant stimulation of beta-adrenergic receptors only in the CIM-infused hindlimb of young, growing steers.

Growing Dorset wether lambs (23 kg initial body weight) were used to determine whether the magnitude of nitrogen retention response to daily administration of exogenous somatotropin is limited by post-ruminal amino acid availability in growing ruminants. Eight lambs surgically fitted with abomasal cannulae were fed a total mixed ration at 85% of ad libitum intake. All lambs received a continuous abomasal infusion of 2 L of water or casein and twice daily subcutaneous injections of 0 or 100 µg recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST)/kg body wt for 15 d per treatment in a 2 × 2 single reversal design. The casein solution was infused at a rate (4 to 5 g nitrogen/d) to achieve 25% of nitrogen intake observed with ad libitum feeding prior to initiation of treatments. Each lamb received all four treatments. Nitrogen balance was determined on d 8 to 14 of each treatment. Casein infusion increased nitrogen balance 43.4% (P< 0.001), and rbST increased nitrogen balance 33.5% (P< 0.001), without significant interaction (P< 0.88). Combined effects of casein and rbST were additive, resulting in an 89% increase in nitrogen balance when compared with water plus excipient treatment. Results suggest that the quantity or composition of absorbed amino acids, or both, limit nitrogen retention by growing lambs, and that rbST increases the efficiency of utilization of absorbed amino acids for protein deposition.

Timely placement of an arteriovenous (AV) vascular access (native AV fistula [AVF] or prosthetic AV graft [AVG]) is necessary to limit the use of tunneled central venous catheters (TCVC) in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) treated with hemodialysis (HD). National guidelines recommend placement of AVF as the AV access of first choice in all patients to improve patient survival. The benefits of AVF over AVG are less certain in the older adults, as age-related biological changes independently modulate patient outcomes. This manuscript describes the rationale, study design and protocol for a randomized controlled pilot study of the feasibility and effects of AVG-first access placement in older adults with no prior AV access surgery. Fifty patients age ≥65 years, with incident ESKD on HD via TCVC or advanced kidney disease facing imminent HD initiation, and suitable upper extremity vasculature for initial placement of an AVF or AVG, will be randomly assigned to receive either an upper extremity AVG-first (intervention) or AVF-first (comparator) access. The study will establish feasibility of randomizing older adults to the two types of AV access surgery, evaluate relationships between measurements of preoperative physical function and vascular access development, compare vascular access outcomes between groups, and gather longitudinal assessments of upper extremity muscle strength, gait speed, performance of activities of daily living, and patient satisfaction with their vascular access and quality of life. Results will assist with the planning of a larger, multicenter trial assessing patient-centered outcomes.
