Regarding geographical distribution and clinical relevance, the most common canine geohelminths are Toxocara canis, ancylostomatids, and Trichuris vulpis. Canine intestinal parasites from the soil and sand present an important potential serious human health hazard, especially for the children preschool and school – age. This paper aimed to establish the degree of contamination of soil and sand with zoonotic parasites from the canine feces and the degree of risk they could pose for human health in public places and playgrounds in the city of Niš. Our parasitological study involved 200 soil samples and 50 sand samples from the public parks in the city of Niš in southeastern Serbia (43°19′15″N, 21°53′45″ E). From several locations, about 100 g of soil and sand was collected based on the bioclimatic indices. Parasitological diagnosis was performed using conventional qualitative and quantitative coprological methods, abiding by the recommendations about the diagnosis of parasitic diseases. In 38 – 46 % of soil samples and 40 % of sand samples seven species of endoparasites were diagnosed. In the samples of soil, a medium and high degree of contamination with the ascarid T. canis (14 – 22 %) was detected, as well as a low and medium degree of contamination with ancylostomatids (4 – 12 %), and in the samples of sand, a variable degree of contamination with the helminths T. canis (26 %) and A. alata (16 %) was found. A statistically significant difference was found in the contamination with A. alata eggs between the samples of sand and samples of soil. The studied public surfaces represent the reservoir of zoonotic parasites, which is a public health problem requiring a synergistic action of several factors to be successfully resolved, i.e. the implementation of prevention, surveillance, and control measures.

In this study, airborne particulates (PM10) and leaves of horse chestnut were collected at selected urban sites in Belgrade, Serbia, in years 2006, 2009 and 2012. All samples were analysed for trace element concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb. It has been shown that, during the study period, the differences among PM10 mass trace element concentrations were not considerable, and that the measured mass and trace elements concentrations were below the Serbian and EU legislation limits. Highest values of trace element concentrations in leaves were observed in year 2012, with the exception of Pb. Lead concentration had a decreasing trend during the whole studied period, in both PM10 and tree leaves. Since leaded gasoline was banned in 2011, a possible reason could be an increasing number of vehicles using unleaded kind along the previous years. Although trace elements in horse chestnut leaves were accumulated only during summer season, horse chestnut leaves showed good response to changes in trace element atmospheric concentrations. However, seasonal variability was evident in trace element source apportionment due to the lack of stationary heating system influence. The Principal Component Analysis showed that during the studied period, one of the major sources of the measured elements was fossil fuel combustion. This study was undertaken to determine the antioxidant and antimicrobial effect of essential oil and extracts of Echinophora sibthorpiana Guss. (fam. Apiaceae) collected in Macedonia. The chemical composition of E. sibthorpiana essential oil was characterized by the presence of methyl eugenol (60.40%), p-cymene (11.18%) and α-phellandrene (10.23%). The free radical scavenging activity of extracts and essential oil was evaluated by DPPH and ABTS assays. The aqueous extract of aerial parts exhibited the strongest scavenging activity (IC50=1.67 mg/ml); results of the ABTS test showed that the most effective was the ethanol extract of aerial parts (1.11 mg vit. C/g). The essential oil showed stronger antioxidant activity compared to hydroxyanisole, ascorbic acid and quercetin that were used in the DPPH and ABTS tests, respectively. The total phenolic and flavonoid concentrations in the extracts ranged between 38.65-60.72 mg GA/g, and 3.15-19.00 mg Qu/g, respectively. The antimicrobial properties of the extracts and essential oil were investigated using a micro-well dilution technique against human pathogenic strains. The results were comparable with the effects of the positive controls, streptomycin and fluconazole. These findings indicate that E. sibthorpiana extracts and oil can be used in preventive treatments and as an alternative for synthetic preservatives. At present, two influenza A viruses, H1N1pdm09 and H3N2, along with influenza B virus co-circulate in the human population, causing endemic and seasonal epidemic acute febrile respiratory infections, sometimes with life-threatening complications. Detection of influenza viruses in nasopharyngeal swab samples was done by real-time RT-PCR. There were 60.2% (53/88) positive samples in 2010/11, 63.4% (52/82) in 2011/12, and 49.9% (184/369) in 2012/13. Among the positive patients, influenza A viruses were predominant during the first two seasons, while influenza B type was more active during 2012/13. Subtyping of influenza A positive samples revealed the presence of A (H1N1)pdm09 in 2010/11, A (H3N2) in 2011/12, while in 2012/13, both subtypes were detected. Essential oils are well known as strong antimicrobial agents of plant origin. In spite of this, the antimicrobial synergism of essential oils isolated from different plant species is poorly investigated. The following study examines the synergism of the essential oils of Origanum vulgare L. and Thymus vulgaris L against pathogenic bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium. First, the antibacterial effect of the oils was tested, and the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of both oils were determined using the microdilution method. To test whether the oils act synergistically, every possible combination of essential oil concentrations was used in a dynamic checkerboard method. The principal screening test for maternal infection is the serologic identification test for the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Data of HBsAg testing surveillance from all public and private laboratories in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Serbia, were collected. There were differences in the inclusion of pregnant women for HBsAg testing between the different counties in the province, ranging from 9% to 68% in Zapadnobački county and Severnobački county, respectively. Preventing perinatal transmission should be an important element in any national strategy for the control hepatitis B infection.

Hospital environments provide a special setting for the interaction of microbiological agents of infection and a host of patients and healthcare workers. Although the basic tenets about the spread of infections in hospital have not changed, new issues have emerged that make infection control more problematic. The aim of this paper was to provide the epidemiological characteristics of nosocomial infections and pathogens among patients in an intensive care unit (ICU), the department with the highest risk of the infections associated with medical devices and healthcare.

Lavender, anise, chamomile, fennel, geranium, oregano, parsley, and sage essential oils were tested for their effectiveness against mushroom pathogens: Verticillium fungicola var. fungicola, Mycogone perniciosa, and Cladobotryum sp. Isolates were exposed to the volatile phase of the oils and then ventilated in order to determine if the effect of the oil was lethal to the pathogen. Oregano and geranium oils were the most toxic, having a fungicidal effect at 0.02-0.08 μl/ml of air, depending on the pathogen. Oregano oil was characterized by high content of carvacrol and thymol, while citranelol and geraniol were the main components of geranium oil.

In five indigenous populations of Thymus glabrescens Willd. collected in the region of Banat (Serbia), the variability on leaf morphological traits, leaf and stem anatomy, and composition of the essential oil was studied. The major component in the studied populations was either thymol or γ-terpinene. Distinct differentiation of populations with respect to chemical composition of essential oils might be related to spatial distribution of the studied populations. No correlations between morphology, anatomy, and essential oil yield and composition were determined. Both capitate and peltate glandular trichomes were found on calyces, whereas the latter were noticed on the abaxial and adaxial leaf surface.

In vitro susceptibility of the turpentine oil obtained from Pinus pinaster oleoresin was evaluated against three Sudanese clinical isolates of Actinomadura madurae, which is the main causative agent of actinomycetoma. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the oil ranged from 100.3 to 124.8 μL/mL, and the minimum microbicidal concentrations (MMCs) were between 100.3 and 150.0 μL/mL. α-Pinene exhibited prominent bioactivity with MICs ranging between 3.3 and 5.0 μL/mL, while its MMC was 10.0 μL/mL against the same clinical isolates. Pinus pinaster turpentine oil and α-pinene might be useful agents in the treatment of mycetoma caused by A. madurae.

Clary sage (Salvia sclarea L.) is native to Southern Europe and is cultivated worldwide. The essential oil of clary sage was analyzed as a potential antifungal agent. The main compounds in the oil were linalyl acetate (52.83%) and linalool (18.18%). Food poisoning agents, spoilage fungi, and plant and animal pathogens were among the tested fungal species. The microdilution method was used to establish minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and minimal fungicidal concentrations (MFC). The commercial antimycotic bifonazole was used as a control. A concentration of 25 μl/ml showed fungicidal activity against Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Fusarium species and Trichoderma viride. For the species Mucor mucedo and Aspergillus viride, the MFC was 15μl/ml; for Candida albicans, it was 10 μl/ml, as in the case of bifonazole. Fungistatic and fungicidal activities of the oil against Cladosporium cladosporioides and Trichophyton menthagrophytes were recorded at concentrations of 2.5 μl/ml and 5 μl/ml. The most sensitive micromycetes were Cladosporium fulvum, Alternaria alternata, Phomopsis helianthi, and Phoma macdonaldii, where a concentration of 2.5 μl/ml was lethal.

Healthcare workers (HCW) can have an important role in educating parents about child road safety, but research on the topic shows that they usually do not have adequate knowledge. Thus, the aim of our study was to analyze their knowledge in the field of child road safety.

Background: Cervical cancer is a major global health problem, and one of the most common causes of cancer in women. This descriptive epidemiological study aimed to provide an overview of the cervical cancer incidence and mortality in Vojvodina. Methods: The data from the Serbian Cancer Registry regarding the cervical cancer incidence and mortality for the period 2016-2021 were analyzed. Results: During the observed 6-year period, the average age-standardized incidence rates of cervical cancer in Vojvodina and Serbia were 20.4 and 19.1 per 100,000 women, respectively. The average age-standardized incidence rates by the district of Vojvodina ranged from 16.8 to 30.2/100,000. The average age-standardized cervical cancer mortality rate in Vojvodina and Serbia was 7.0 and 6.6/100,000, respectively. The average mortality rates by the district of Vojvodina ranged between 5.6/100,000 and 9.9/100,000. Conclusion: The cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates in Vojvodina exhibited significant variation across different districts and observed years, with their average values surpassing the national average. To improve the epidemiological situation of cervical cancer in Vojvodina, it is imperative to enhance the implementation of organized screening at the district level, coupled with intensified efforts to promote HPV vaccination throughout Vojvodina. Additionally, more research on screening coverage and vaccination rates and improved reporting cervical cancer cases and deaths are needed.

The autochthonous, i.e. local, red wine variety Prokupac is one of the most important varieties in Serbia. In the past, this variety was the leading one in the largest number of wine-growing areas of our country. The Prokupac variety is currently the most represented in the Tri Morave wine-growing region (Central Serbia), while the largest number of vineyards with this variety are located in the Župa wine-growing subregion. Due to its importance as an old and traditional variety, certain researches of this variety have been initiated in recent years in wine-growing areas where Prokupac is traditionally grown. Certain scientific activities were initiated to isolate different genotypes with improved production and use value, all with the aim of clonal selection of this variety. In this paper, some characteristics and quality parameters of the more promising Prokupac genotypes that were isolated in the Župa wine-growing subregion in the Aleksandrovac municipality are presented. More extensive research was carried out on grapes from the harvest of 2019, 2020 and 2021 with 16 selected genotypes, namely eight genotypes from the Latkovac locality and eight genotypes from the Drenča locality. In addition to laboratory analyses of sugar, acid and pH content in the grape must, the theoretical alcohol content was also calculated. Furthermore, spectrophotometric methods were used to determine colour intensity A-420, colour intensity A-520, colour intensity A-620 and total colour intensity, as well as colour tonality. The analyses showed that certain main quality parameters from the research are within the value limits as in earlier research, but that the acid content is generally more optimal for red wine varieties compared to the research of that parameter carried out in the earlier period in other wine-growing areas (Fruška Gora and Čegar wine-growing subregions). Moreover, in our research, the sugar content of the grape is higher than the established values of that parameter in the grape must from the Čegar wine-growing subregion.

In this work, removal of heavy metals (Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) from fly ash has been studied using acid leaching and wet oxidation methods. In parallel, microwave-assisted acid digestion was applied for determination of pseudo-total concentrations of heavy metals to estimate the leaching efficiency. Multivariate statistics (Pearson correlation, principal component analysis, and hierarchical cluster analysis) have shown two dominant groups of elements, depending on their characteristics and affinity towards the ash solid phase. Thus, Cr, Zn, Mn, Co, and Ni belong to the group I, while Pb, As, Cd, and Cu belong to the group II. It was demonstrated that the wet oxidation method was more suitable than acid leaching since the reduction in metal concentration was 30 to 75 % compared to 12 to 25 % obtained by acid digestion. The influence of fly ash treatment on the residue characteristics was investigated by X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. The analyses revealed surface and structure changes of fly ash after the wet oxidation treatment. Overall, wet oxidation could be an appropriate treatment for heavy metal removal from fly ash, providing a material that could be further used, thus reducing the risk of pollution caused by the disposal of coal combustion fly ash.

Research of uvological characteristics is one of the obligatory steps for determination of general production and technological value of grapevine varieties. Such research is particularly recommended for local varieties that did not previously show sat­isfying characteristics necessary for production of high-quality wine. Local grapevine varieties Smederevka (white wine variety) and Žametovka (red wine variety) have mostly served for production of low-quality wine in the past. With changes in the manner of pro­duction in the sense of focus on high-quality wine and production of wine with geograph­ical indications, vineyards planted with these varieties in Serbia have mostly been grubbed up. However, due to the characteristic and favourable terroir conditions, they have survived in the Trstenik wine-growing district (subregion within the Tri Morave wine-growing re­gion). With the aim of determining uvological characteristics of these two varieties in current climate conditions that are favourable for these high-yield varieties, this paper examines the mechanical composition of grape bunches (bunch weight, number of berries, stem weight), mechanical composition of berries (weight of 100 berries, weight of skin of 100 berries, weight of mesocarp of 100 berries and weight of seeds of 100 berries), as well as grape must characteristics (sugar content and total acids in grape must) of representative genotypes of local varieties Smederevka and Žametovka in production vineyards in the Trstenik wine-growing district. Research results have shown that uvological characteristics of these varieties are slightly better in comparison with previous research carried out in other wine-growing areas, that is, in comparison with general information from literature, which indicates the necessity for further research of these varieties in different agro-eco­logical conditions.
