Under the coordinated operation of the transmission and distribution networks, the issue of downstream grid flow returning to the upstream grid is becoming increasingly prominent. This article proposes a process for joint planning of energy storage site selection and line capacity expansion in distribution networks considering the volatility of new energy. This technology uses CHk-means clustering calculations based on actual large-scale operation data of new energy sources to generate typical operating curves. Then, it finely constructs an objective function considering power transmission in the transmission-distribution network, abandonment of new energy, line limits, and energy storage construction. By introducing indicative constraints to the energy storage construction-related constraints, the optimization model achieves a non-iterative direct solution. The results of the constructed new energy high-penetration distribution network example IEEE Case33 show that the output solution of this model can effectively reduce the energy sent back from the distribution network to the main grid. Compared to optimization models that do not consider the integration of new energy sources, the output solution of this model can reduce the abandonment of new energy by at least 50%. The unprecedented growth of distributed renewable generation is changing the distribution network from passive to active, resulting in issues like reverse power flow, voltage violations, malfunction of protection relays, etc. To ensure the reliable and flawless operation of active distribution networks, an electrical device enabling active network management is necessary, and a hybrid distribution transformer offers a promising solution. This study introduces a novel hybrid transformer topology and multi-mode control strategy to achieve coordinated voltage and reverse power regulation in active distribution networks. The proposed hybrid transformer combines conventional transformer windings with a partially rated SiC-MOSFET-based back-to-back converter, reducing additional investment costs and enhancing system reliability. A multi-mode control strategy is proposed to facilitate the concurrent reverse power control and voltage violation mitigation of the presented hybrid transformer, allowing a smooth transition between the P–Q control mode and the V–f control mode. The control mode switching can be activated manually or autonomously in response to voltage violations or reverse power overloading. The effectiveness of the proposed hybrid transformer configuration and its control mode transition mechanism are examined through comprehensive case studies conducted in the PSCAD/EMTDC environment. The proposed HT design has been confirmed to achieve a voltage regulation range of ±20% of the nominal voltage and effectively regulate bidirectional active power flow within a range of −25% to 25% of the rated power. Multi-agent based small scaled smart grid reinforcement scheme is proposed to manage energy resources by enhancing resilience to supply power to critical loads in peak demand by leveraging demand side management (DSM) for smoothing load profile and optimal energy storage system (ESS) scheduling in response to grid cost. Interconnected microgrids comprise diverse energy resources that allow sharing energy to balance fluctuation by deploying a market that rewards cheap energy. Three stages are defined in this proposed scheme. In the first stage, without DER, consumption charges are reduced to 7.1% through DSM, but customer comfort is compromised. In the second stage, microgrids comprise RER; energy consumption-related charges are reduced to 92.2% by the feed-in tariff (FIT) Program. In the final stage, the inclusion of energy market for trading among microgrids (ESS, diesel and RER) resulting in reduced charges greater than charges incurred from the grid is defined by 122.1%. The findings show that the average power drawn from utility grid increased from 134.7kW to 205.3kW, and peak demand decreased from 591kW to 495kW. Integer linear programming optimization technique is applied to allow the optimal dispatch of microgrids generation to reduce the operation cost to 42.64%. Less reliance on the grid, flexible energy use, and avoiding costly electricity purchases are achieved through DSM, effective resources scheduling, and energy trading.

The voltage in distribution systems is controlled by the under-load tap changer of the substation and the pole transformer of the primary feeders. Recently, as one of the main countermeasures, a step voltage regulator is being introduced to solve voltage problems such as overvoltage phenomena in a distribution feeder interconnected with a renewable energy source and under voltage in a long-distance feeder. However, the tap of the step voltage regulator may be frequently operated due to its interdependent relationship with the under-load tap changer in the distribution system. Furthermore, given the existing operating characteristics of the step voltage regulator, it is difficult to perfectly maintain the customer voltage within an allowable limit using existing methods such as the line drop compensation method for a step voltage regulator. In addition, the existing line drop compensation method, considering the distributed generators, may be not able to control the proper voltage within an allowable limit. Therefore, in order to solve such voltage problems, this paper proposes a voltage control method for a step voltage regulator by considering the output voltage of an under-load tap changer that is operated via the line drop compensation method. In other words, to overcome the limitations of existing voltage control methods for step voltage regulators, this paper proposes an optimal control method to determine the optimal compensation rate for a step voltage regulator by considering the reverse power flow from a renewable energy source and the output voltage of the under-load tap changer of the main transformer. Recent years have seen a rapid uptake in distributed energy resources (DER). Such technologies pose a number of challenges to network operators, which ultimately can limit the amount of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems that can be connected to a network. The objective of this industry-based research was to determine the potential network effects of forecast levels of customer-owned rooftop solar PV on Energy Queensland's distribution network and formulate functions that can be used to determine such effects without the requirement for detailed network modeling and analysis. In this research, many of Energy Queensland's distribution feeders were modeled using DIgSILENT PowerFactory and analyzed with forecast levels of solar PV and customer load. Python scripts were used to automate this process, and quasi-dynamic simulation (QDSL) models were used to represent the dynamic volt–watt and volt–var response of inverters, as mandated by the Australian Standard AS/NZS 4777. In analyzing the results, linear relationships were revealed between the number of PV systems on a feeder and various network characteristics. Regression was used to form trend equations that represent the linear relationships for each scenario analyzed. The trend equations provide a way of approximating network characteristics for other feeders under various levels of customer-owned rooftop solar PV without the need for detailed modeling. Distributed generation has enhanced power production in recent times. Due to their benefits, Ghana is interested in grid-tied solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Despite the benefits, solar PV integration studies in Ghana have not advanced. This study examines reverse power flow (RPF) due to solar PV in Low Voltage (LV) network branches. The methodology uses a modified IEEE European test network and an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) LV network. ETAP software is used to simulate the two solar PV integrated LV networks, and the obtained data is used to formulate correlation models of solar PV penetration and key network parameters in Excel. Model results estimate the RPF critical values for the modified IEEE European test network and the ECG LV network as 7.36 kW and 7.44 kW, respectively. The RPF values are obtained at maximum penetration depths of 62.6% and 69.8% respectively. At maximum penetration levels, predicted line loadings are 6.42% and 7.28% respectively. Further analysis reveals branch-transformer RPF margins of 26.8% and 23.1% in the modified IEEE European test network and the ECG LV network respectively. The results are essential for establishing pre-determined settings to safeguard LV network branches and transformers from overload due to RPF.

The key downsides of rooftop solar photovoltaic energy systems in comparison to other renewable energy systems their impacts and distinct operating characteristics of rooftop solar PVs in the distribution system with low power utility networks, are investigated in different directions. Global researchers and operation engineers examined harmonic distortion, active and reactive voltage control, voltage drop control, and radial, mesh power flow control analysis in distributed systems are reviewed in this study. The efficacy of a secondary distribution network system connected to the grid with smart inverters in terms of implementing high penetration of rooftop solar energy with a secondary distribution network system utilizing smart inverters was examined in this review study. This study examines a total of 42 relevant studies on the various stages of optimization between 2014 and 2021, a rooftop solar PV system was installed. The performance of an efficient secondary distribution system with grid integrated smart inverter; and (ii) Algorithms based on optimization for addressing the objectives in rooftop solar PV systems are examined in this research.

Modern low-voltage distribution systems necessitate solar photovoltaic (PV) penetration. One of the primary concerns with this grid-connected PV system is overloading due to reverse power flow, which degrades the life of distribution transformers. This study investigates transformer overload issues due to reverse power flow in a low-voltage network with high PV penetration. A simulation model of a real urban electricity company in Ghana is investigated against various PV penetration levels by load flows with ETAP software. The impact of reverse power flow on the radial network transformer loadings is examined for high PV penetrations. Using the least squares method, simulation results are modelled in Excel software. Transformer backflow limitations are determined by correlating operating loads with PV penetration. At high PV penetration, the models predict reverse power flow into the transformer. Interpolations from the correlation models show transformer backflow operating limits of 78.04 kVA and 24.77% at the threshold of reverse power flow. These limits correspond to a maximum PV penetration limit of 88.30%. In low-voltage networks with high PV penetration; therefore, planners should consider transformer overload limits caused by reverse power flow, which degrades transformer life. This paper presents an Equilibrium Optimizer (EO)-based method that simultaneously determines locations and sizes of multiple photovoltaic (PV) units for maximizing a distribution system’s PV hosting capacity (PVHC). The proposed method avoids various search-space restrictions seen in recent literature. The constraints in this paper are separated into two types based on the necessity of power flow analysis. The proposed method is implemented through co-simulation between MATLAB and OpenDSS. PV output and load demand variation is considered through a 24-hour profile representing a season. Smart inverter is considered through the PV inverter volt-var control (VVC) scheme. The proposed method is tested on the IEEE 123-bus benchmark system. Four test cases are considered to determine the impact of reverse power flow (RPF) limit and the impact of VVC toward the optimal PV planning. The results show that EO produces superior results compared to Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), and Coyote Optimization Algorithm (COA).

The use of electric vehicles (EVs) and photovoltaics (PV) is increasing worldwide. Transportation networks require the effective use of renewable energy (RE) for EVs, whereas power networks require local consumption of PV energy, mainly at the initiative of local governments. Although many previous studies have addressed these requirements using private EVs as mobile storages, their uncertainty and uncontrollability remain highly problematic. Therefore, our previous studies focused on electric buses because of their high controllability and certainty. These studies involved the development and evaluation of two independent minimization problems—kilowatts (KW) and kilowatt-hours (KWH) of surplus RE—as a charging schedule optimization method using mixed integer linear programming. However, the feasibility of simultaneously minimizing KW and KWH still presented technical problems. This study aims to extend and generalize the method to the simultaneous minimization of KW and KWH of the PV-derived reverse power flow (RPF). With this multiobjective optimization, the KW peak-cut of the RPF improves the hosting capacity and increases the availability of connectable RE resources, whereas the minimization of KWH promotes the local consumption of RE and decarbonization of public transportation. Two simulations using detailed data of actual bus operations and actual power flow data for a real city confirmed the feasibility of simultaneously optimizing KW and KWH and the relationship between these indicators and number of EV chargers. The optimized charging of the 17 electric buses achieved a maximum of 211.4 kW peak-cut and 1318.4 kWh RE-RPF absorption, reducing CO2 emissions by 495.7 kg/day.

The increasing use of photovoltaics (PVs) in distribution systems owing to the low-carbon policy has given rise to the need for various technological changes. In particular, the operation of on-load tap changers (OLTCs) has attracted attention. In traditional distribution systems, the OLTC operates via a line-drop compensator (LDC), which focuses on the load to solve the low-voltage problem; however, the problem of over-voltage caused by PVs persists. Currently, a method for operating an OLTC using the measured voltage is being researched; however, solving the voltage problem for several feeders connected to a main transformer (MT) is not viable. Therefore, this study proposes an OLTC operation method to address the feeder with the largest voltage problem depending on the direction of power flow. The proposed method selects a point where the OLTC operates using the difference between the measured and reference voltages. Setting the reference voltage can solve the problem that occurs due to the direction of power flow. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified via case studies. Based on the results, we can conclude that the proposed method effectively solves the voltage problem, and an increase in hosting capacity can be expected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The production of renewable energy sources can change rapidly in a short period of time, making monitoring the power quality of Low Voltage Distribution Networks (LVDNs) one of the biggest challenges for Distribution System Operators (DSOs). An LVDN can overload some equipment if it does not monitors voltage profiles, voltage unbalance and reverse apparent power flow. Therefore, we propose a monitoring system that uses the Public Lighting Infrastructure (PLI), which is fed directly by the LVDN, to monitor the LVDN. It is based on remote management relays installed in the PLI, and replaces the installation of a power quality analyzer (PQ). The system has been empirically validated and the results show that the proposed system can identify reverse apparent power flow, profiles, and voltage unbalance with an average absolute error of 0.096% compared to a professional PQ analyzer. The proposed system can be a relevant contribution to the challenge of power quality monitoring, with cost savings; for example, DSOs can use the proposed system to access real-time information in the LVDN through a low-cost data acquisition model, without the need to send a team to install a PQ analyzer in the LVDN and then obtain the data. • Propose an energy monitoring system based in the Public Lighting Infrastructure. • Define a new calculation method. • Design, implement and validate the system in a real street. • Empirical results of voltage profiles, voltage unbalance and reverse power flow in a low-voltage distribution network with photovoltaic generation. Over the past years, the penetration of photovoltaic (PV) systems into the distribution network has experienced significant augmentation as the pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere keeps increasing while the prices of the solar components keep reducing. Despite the benefits PV systems bring to the distribution network, the high penetration of this technology into the distribution network could lead to reverse power flow (RPF) when the PV systems produce more than the local loads require. This RPF could result in the malfunctioning of protective devices and their coordination. This research addresses this problem by utilizing electric vehicles (EVs) that are currently revolutionizing the transport sector. Here, the charging of EVs during the day is intelligently controlled to mitigate RPF as a result of the excess power produced by the PV systems. Resolving RPF is achieved through a control system that measures the power flow on each phase of the main grid substation. If at any instance negative power is detected (reverse power), quantified EVs needing recharge are instantly incorporated into the network for charging through the automatic closure of the power switches of the required number of charging points with EVs whose total power demand equals the amount of reverse power detected. The excess power is hence absorbed and stored by the EVs. The proposed method is tested on an expanded IEEE 13 node test feeder and simulated using ETAP software. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in eliminating RPF which occurs from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon by connecting the required number of EVs during that timeframe. The proposed method involves the distribution network operators working in synergy with the transport sector to effectively solve the problem of RPF in the distribution network.

Distributed generation (DG), when renewable, is part of the necessary decarbonization of the electric energy sector. Although DG can provide benefits, it is known as well for its operational challenges. This work addresses the problem caused by DGs in distribution systems with meshed secondary circuits. In these kinds of networks, there is more than one medium-voltage (MV) primary feeder supplying a meshed low-voltage (LV) grid, and the distribution transformers in between are connected to network protectors (NPs) through their LV side. These NPs are adjusted to activate the circuit breaker when reverse power flow is detected, usually meaning there is a fault in the upstream feeder. Alternatively, DG penetration can lead to NP false tripping since it produces energy that can flow from LV to the MV side. Considering faults on MV and DG penetration, a set of simulations is carried out with two distribution networks to verify any patterns in the power flow reversion. A Brazilian 81-bus test system and the IEEE 390-bus are employed using the OpenDSS software. The found results indicate the high complexity of the problem, which does not have a simple solution. Nowadays, the existing hierarchical, centrally controlled power grid faces new challenges due to the increase penetration of renewable sources, the need of implementing demand-side management and the 2020 and 2050 environmental targets. A promising concept which can successfully contribute to addressing the environmental concerns and energy challenges of the twenty-first century is the grid-connected decentralised energy systems that embed significant amount of renewable generation and allow reverse power flow from distribution grids into the transmission network. Despite their benefits, decentralised energy storage systems are not yet widely spread due to several implementation and designing barriers. The design obstacle which is being addressed in this study includes the determination of the optimal size of the energy storage system components in terms of battery size and rating of the power converter for a single house application. In order to generalise the findings, nine different real houses were considered. Thus, the most financially beneficial battery and power converter combination for nine existing UK houses with installed PV roof-top system were identified in this study.

Distributed resources are connected to low-voltage distribution systems for various reasons, including energy savings, demand reduction, sale of energy or capacity, and providing a backup power source if supply from the utility system is lost. A spot network is one type of distribution system that presents some special problems for connecting a distributed resource. A sample spot network system is analyzed to show the effects of operating an induction generator. Induction generator reactive power requirements, configuration of the turbine generator controls, network relay trip and close characteristics, and external tapped loads all affect operation of the network. The analysis identifies areas of concern when connecting an induction generator to a spot network and suggests ways to configure the control system and network relays to ensure the spot network operates normally. This article reviews a two-unit spot network, but the concepts and analysis can be applied to larger spot networks and other types of distributed resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, voltage reduction due to reverse power flow from a photovoltaic (PV) system is explained by a measurement and theoretical analysis of electric circuits. Although it is well accepted that a reverse power flow leads to a rise in distribution feeder voltage, our measurements indicated that distribution feeder voltage reduces with an increase in reverse power flow in presence of a large PV system. In our theoretical analysis, a power–voltage curve analysis is performed using a simple two-node distribution system model. We found that the voltage reduction could be satisfactorily rationalized by the magnitude of the line impedance, reverse apparent power flow, phase angle of the line impedance, and power factor of the photovoltaic system. This finding indicates that an increase in the magnitude of line impedance and/or reverse apparent power flow result in a voltage reduction. Similarly, an increase in the ratio of line reactance to line resistance and leading reactive power generation at the receiving end also cause a voltage reduction. This paper proposes a new control method for a Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC). This method is based on the load equivalent conductance approach, originally proposed by Fryze. It can be useful not only for compensation for nonactive current and for improving voltage quality, but it also allows one to perform some unconventional functions. This control method can be performed by extending the orthodox notion of ‘static’ load equivalent conductance into a time-variable signal. It may be used to characterize energy changes in the whole UPQC-and-load circuitry. The UPQC can regulate energy flow between all sources and loads being under compensation. They may be located as well for UPQC’s AC-side as DC-side. System works properly even if they switch their activity to work either as loads or generators. The UPQC can operate also as a buffer, which can store/share the in-load generated energy amongst other loads, or it can transmit this energy to the source. Therefore, in addition to performing the UPQC’s conventional compensation tasks, it can also serve as a local energy distribution center.

This study proposes a new application and a novel control scheme for utilising Smart PV and Smart Park inverters to mitigate temporary overvoltage (TOV) phenomenon in distribution systems. As more number of the inverter‐based distributed generators such as PV are connected to a medium‐ and low‐voltage distribution systems, TOV phenomenon becomes more prevalent during single line to ground fault. Currently, the IEEE 142 'Effective grounding' technique has been the reference for various grounding schemes to prevent TOV. This study explores the potential of low‐cost and a novel solution for the first time that utilises a specialised controller associated with PV/SmartPark inverters (Smart inverters) as a TOV suppressor. The efficacy of the aforementioned novel application has been demonstrated on a simplified benchmark system of the IEEE Standard 399‐1997 with few modifications. A 4 MW conventional PV plant is considered along with 10 MVAR Smart inverter connected to the point of common coupling. During normal operation of the distribution systems, the Smart inverter controller acts in a voltage regulation mode to curtail the voltage rise due to reverse power flow from the 4 MW PV plant. During a fault condition, the TOV sensor enables the TOV control to suppress the violated limits of voltages in the healthy phases to an acceptable value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A large existing delta-wye step-down transformer was proposed to be temporarily used as a step-up transformer and energized from the low-voltage wye winding by multiple small diesel generators (DGs) to accelerate commissioning activities by utilizing existing temporary generation. This paper is a case study that discusses the associated power system constraints created by this proposed modified power system configuration. The modified power system configuration resulted in an ungrounded high-voltage (HV) system created by the transformer's delta winding, which required HV system modifications to create a grounded system. Additionally, the existing power system had generation and load flow constraints and had protection and coordination constraints that needed to be maintained to supply the existing loads. Also, the inrush current resulting from the transformer energization needed to be evaluated and compared with the generator's short time current rating. Finally, modifications to the protection and coordination settings resulting from the modified power system configuration and confirmation that the arc flash incident energy levels were acceptable after implementation of modified settings were required. Worldwide is the concern about climate change and the impact on our planet indisputable. One of the aspects that enhances environmental problems is the generation of energy through conventional methods. Due to this, governments all over the world, and particularly Ecuador, opted for the implementation of renewable energy for the generation of electricity. This paper discusses possible technical impacts of distributed generation and energy storage of local distribution networks in Ecuador. Technical impacts on losses, voltages and reversed power flow are analyzed. OpenDSS software was used to model the networks. Different scenarios of photovoltaic (PV) penetration were analyzed. Also, the effect of the incorporation of storage in a high PV penetration network was examined.

Integration of distributed generation (DG) in existing distribution networks has been studied thoroughly during the past years as a measure of reducing grid's power losses. However, the optimal DG placement, known as ODGP, toward loss minimisation, has not been studied in depth by considering the possible impact of the reverse power flow (RPF) caused by extended penetration of distributed energy resources. This study uses a constriction factor embedded local particle swarm optimisation algorithm along with the appropriate particle formulation that solves the ODGP problem by taking into account the impact of possible RPF. In this study, the idea of RPF modelling is introduced by providing extended versions of IEEE test systems. Modified versions of the IEEE 30‐bus and IEEE 33‐bus test systems are modelled and results are presented in order to highlight the impact of RPF on the ODGP problem solution. A new approach for reactive power management with volt–var control, but considering inverters’ capacity and sensitivity to the critical bus is presented in this paper. The approach addresses the voltage rise and reverse power flow issues when residential renewable energy sources such as rooftop solar panels produce more energy than the local load demand. The overvoltage is controlled by selective var injection based on the inverter location, capacity, and minimum power factor limit set by regulation. This method improves the voltage regulation of a distributed system with high penetration of renewable energy sources while efficiently utilizing the inverters’ reactive power capacity. Simulation results are presented with a ten inverter network supplied by a 60 kVA distribution transformer. Experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of this method for overvoltage prevention of a distribution test system with three photovoltaic (PV) inverters. The "Reverse power flow" (RPF) behavior of distributed photovoltaics (DPV) promotes the new energy consumption and has a negative impact on the adaptability of the distribution network (DN). Researching and constructing a DN adaptability assessment model considering the DPV's RPF behavior is an important method to explore the weaknesses of DN adaptability from the perspective of management decision-making, and then propose improvement solutions. Firstly, this paper constructs a set of hierarchical DN adaptability assessment index systems from the three dimensions of security, economy and low carbon. Secondly, the combination of ordered weighted averaging improved the Analytic Hierarchy Process and the Entropy weight method is used to weigh the indicators. Then, an assessment method based on the combination of credibility theory and cloud model is proposed to solve the ambiguity and randomness in the evaluation process. Finally, the model was applied practically in the DN of Qiantuan Village in Beijing, and the adaptation of the DN is compared and analyzed under three scenarios: DPV not grid-connected, grid-connected and fully local consumption, grid-connected and RPF behavior. The results show that the adaptability levels of Qiantan Village DN are classified as "Medium", "Good", and "Good", with scores of 78.839, 86.312, and 88.287, respectively, under the three different scenarios. Furthermore, regarding the first-level indicators, the DPV's RPF behavior reduces the security of the DN but improves the adaptability in general. Distributed generators (DG) using renewable energy sources (RESs) have been attracting special attention within distribution systems. However, a large amount of DG penetration causes voltage deviation and reverse power flow in the smart grid. Therefore, the smart grid needs a solution for voltage control, power flow control and power outage prevention. This paper proposes a decision technique of optimal reference scheduling for a battery energy storage system (BESS), inverters interfacing with a DG and voltage control devices for optimal operation. Moreover, the reconfiguration of the distribution system is made possible by the installation of a loop power flow controller (LPC). Two separate simulations are provided to maintain the reliability in the stable power supply and economical aspects. First, the effectiveness of the smart grid with installed BESS or LPC devices is demonstrated in fault situations. Second, the active smart grid using LCPs is proposed. Real-time techniques of the dual scheduling algorithm are applied to the system. The aforementioned control objective is formulated and solved using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with an adaptive inertia weight (AIW) function. Owing to the increasing penetration of single‐phase small generation units and electric vehicles connected to distribution grids, system operators are facing challenges related to local unbalanced voltage rise or drop issues, which may lead to a violation of the allowed voltage band. To address this problem, distribution transformers with on‐load tapping capability are under development. This study presents model and experimental validation of a 35 kVA three‐phase power distribution transformer with independent on‐load tap‐changer control capability on each phase. With the purpose of investigating and evaluating its effectiveness under different operative conditions, appropriate scenarios are defined and tested considering both balanced and unbalanced situations, also in case of reverse power flow. The experimental setup is built starting from an analysis of a Danish distribution network, in order to reproduce the main feature of an unbalanced grid. The experimental activities are recreated in by carrying out dynamics simulation studies, aiming at validating the implemented models of both the transformer as well as the other grid components. Phase–neutral voltages' deviations are limited, proving the effectiveness of the phase‐independent tap operations. Renewable energy penetration in the low‐voltage grid faces several limitations due to the current grid topology. Master/slave micro‐grids could help solving these issues, by offering additional services to the grid such as the power management of the distributed power energy sources. In some cases, the power produced by the distributed energy sources exceeds the local consumption of the low‐voltage grid. The consequent reverse power flow can be either dangerous (for the medium voltage) or impossible (for a micro‐grid with limited storage). The droop characteristic of commercial inverter can be exploited to avoid this behaviour. However, stability problems can arise due to a low phase‐locked‐loop (PLL) bandwidth. In this paper we propose two optimization-based algorithms for coordinating residential battery storage when solar photovoltaic (PV) generation in excess of load is compensated via net metering. Our objective is to balance increases in daily operational savings that accrue to customers with the management of reverse power flows and/or peak loads approaching a network capacity. To achieve this objective we present a central quadratic program (QP)-based algorithm, where residential customers implement a distributor-specified day-ahead battery schedule. We also present a local QP-based algorithm, where each residential customer implements a day-ahead battery schedule subject to three distributor-specified weights. To complete our assessment of the distributor benefit, both QP-based scheduling algorithms are applied to measured load and generation data from 145 residential customers located in an Australian distribution network. The results of this case study confirm both QP-based scheduling algorithms manage reverse power flow and peak loads within a distribution network. In the context of net metering, all customers exhibit the same operational savings when implementing the central QP-based algorithm, while the local QP-based algorithm disproportionately penalizes some customers. In this paper a novel approach regarding the optimal penetration of Distributed Generation (DG) in Distribution Networks (DNs) towards loss minimization is proposed. More specific, a Local Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) variant algorithm is developed in order to define the optimal active and reactive power generation and/or consumption requirements for the optimal number and location of nodes that yield loss minimization. Thus, the proposed approach provides the optimal number, siting and sizing of DGs altogether. In addition, based on the optimal power requirements of the resulted nodes, a combination of potential DG types to be installed is recommended. The proposed objective function in this paper is also innovative since it embeds the constraint of reverse power flow to the slack bus by the formation of a new penalty term. The proposed methodology is applied to 30 and 33 bus systems. The results indicate the optimal number, locations, and capacity of DG units, which were calculated simultaneously. Finally, the impact of the predefined amount of permissible reverse power flow to the optimal solution is also examined through two scenarios: the first considers zero reverse power flow and the second unlimited reverse power flow. Photovoltaic microgeneration (μG) located near the domestic consumers is expected to increase more in the future. Known issues regarding high μG penetration are voltage rise and reverse power flow. The concept of self‐consumption and storage is emerging as a way to improve network power supply quality and to facilitate the integration of small renewable energy sources in low voltage networks. This paper intends to give a further contribution by assessing the improvements provided by allowing domestic clients to consume and store the energy they produce. The tool at hand to study the situation is the unbalanced three‐phase load flow algorithm, based on the power summation technique, improved with the capability of explicitly compute the neutral voltages. The behaviour of a test radial distribution grid is assessed in different operating conditions, namely winter/summer, μG penetration level and μG operating mode. Voltage profile, active power flow in the service transformer and losses are monitored. The results suggest that self‐consumption with storage operating mode is a promising solution. Distributed generators (DG) and renewable energy sources have been attracting special attention in distribution systems in all over the world. Renewable energies, such as photovoltaic (PV) and wind turbine generators are considered as green energy. If excessive voltage deviation occurs, consumer's electric devices might break and reverse power flow will also has a negative impact on the transmission system. Thus, mass interconnections of DGs has an adverse effect on both of the utility and the customer. Therefore, reactive power control method is proposed previous research by using inverters attached DGs for prevent voltage deviations. Moreover, battery energy storage system (BESS) is also proposed for resolve reverse power flow. In addition, it is possible to supply high quality power for managing DGs and BESSs. Therefore, this paper proposes a method to maintain voltage, active power, and reactive power flow at interconnection points by using cooperative controlled of PVs, house BESSs, EVs, large BESSs, and existing voltage control devices. This paper not only protect distribution system, but also attain distribution loss reduction and effectivity management of control devices. Presence of large number of single-phase, customer-owned, distributed energy resources that are installed randomly in any phase of Low Voltage (LV) distribution feeders, may lead the generation, in a particular phase, to exceed its load demand. This may result in reverse power flow in that phase towards the upstream network while in the other phases, power flows from the upstream network to the LV feeder. To avoid such problems, this paper proposes the use of Distribution Static Compensators (DSTATCOM) to circulate the reverse flowing power from one phase to the other phases. In this paper, the installation of DSTATCOMs is considered in the medium voltage feeders. The DSTATCOM can be connected in either wye or delta, both of these connections are explored here. Different control strategies are developed for each connection. The main objective of the DSTATCOM is to provide a path for the power, to circulate among the phases, through its DC link. The DSTATCOM controller is further developed to balance its upstream powers and to supply the load reactive power demand. The dual active bridge (DAB) is the mostly used DC–DC converter in bidirectional power flow applications. It has several advantages such as high‐power density, galvanic isolation, robustness, among others. However, in applications in which direct and reverse power flow have great difference, the converter efficiency can be penalised. A recent proposed isolated converter known as integrated full‐bridge‐forward DC–DC converter is specifically designed to this application and has low number of active devices compared to DAB converter. In order to evaluate the features of both converters, this Letter proposes a comparative analysis between these two topologies.
