Technical and Vocational Education and Training has gained importance but there is a noticeable gap between its research and teaching. While its teaching is more dynamic the research writing is scarce despite the performance measure demands. Rapid technological advancements, the multifaceted roles of the teachers, and the second language barrier escalate the pressure on research performance measures. Language models for research writing can help to alleviate research writing language practices. This paper explores the language practices of highly cited research articles for the technical and vocational education and training application. Specifically, it looks at how prolific writers write. Given the pressing need for a more accessible and more descriptive language model for technical and vocational research writing, this paper aims to assist by presenting techniques derived from the analysis of 62 highly cited research articles indexed in Scopus. Using move analysis, the study identifies 14 emerging techniques used in the introduction sections, offering a model for the writers and instructors. It is one of the concerns of EAP to bridge the disparity of discursive practice between novice and expert writers, but the comparison is largely made across a broad knowledge field and little is known about the likely divergence within a disciplinary divide. In this study, we explore the epistemic positioning in research writing by PhD students and expert writers across applied and pure science disciplines. By focusing on hedges and boosters as its main devices, we examine their forms and functions in the academic texts. Results show that PhD students in applied disciplines use significantly fewer epistemic devices than experts but no significant difference was found in pure sciences. Apart from the differences in linguistic choices, student writers show a preference for authorial positioning at the outset of academic texts while professionals tend to comment on research findings and establish a persuasive interpretation of their value. Additionally, novice writers are inclined to hedge on numerical information (about) but expert writers hedge on claims (likely). We discuss the results from the perspectives of disciplinary epistemology and writer identity. This research addressed several key problems: the extent of use of teachers' feedback strategies, the effects of WCF on students' performance, and the significant correlation among the variables. A quantitative descriptive research design was used, and 153 participants were surveyed through the messenger platform and Google Forms. Research findings indicate that among the four types of written corrective feedback (WCF), direct feedback was the most frequently employed strategy by teachers, while focused feedback was the least utilised. Furthermore, results indicate that students value reflective learning facilitated by teachers' written corrective feedback, especially in error recognition and constructive feedback responses, as non-education students displayed positive attitudes toward receiving feedback. The study also revealed a positive correlation between WCF and research writing performance, regardless of age, gender, or degree program, with relatively low values at 0.022, 0.003, and 0.005, respectively, using partial eta squared. Additionally, significant correlations were observed between students' GPAs in research courses and the impact of WCF, revealing a disparity in GPAs between Research 1 and Research 2. As direct, unfocused, and indirect written corrective feedback showed a statistically significant relationship in the extent of use of teachers' written corrective feedback, focused feedback shows no significant correlation. The findings emphasise the importance of evaluating different written corrective feedback strategies to enhance students' research writing outcomes. Findings call for the strategic use of written corrective feedback based on the specified needs and level of performance of non-education students. Furthermore, students, teachers, and the institution are to work hand in hand to create a culture of continuous improvement of students in research writing and academic performance through written corrective feedback.

Writing academic research papers acceptable for journal publication is not often taught in graduate programs let alone in undergraduate studies. Students and early career researchers (herein known as students for both categories) usually undergo a trial-and-error period to learn how to navigate the publication submission process—a long and daunting task. However, E-mentoring, or electronic mentoring, has proven to be beneficial for students. E-mentoring opportunities can be found by a pro-active student seeking out published researchers in their fields and requesting if they can mentor them. Colleges, universities or other academic institutions may have formal or informal research or peer review programmes, internship, field experience or practicum courses for-credit. Academic journals may also host student mentoring programmes for peer review, editing, and/or research writing hands-on experiences. Mentoring students in research writing and the journal publication process should start as early in one’s academic career as possible. Age or academic status should not be seen as a deterrent or disadvantage when mentored by a patient, experienced and enthusiastic research mentor. Such e-mentoring experiences can be offered by individual researchers, at the institutional level or from the academic journal—the latter being the most ideal model worthy of advocacy and replication.

In many South African universities, full research students receive little support during the research conceptualisation stage of the research journey, other than that provided by their supervisors, who tend to have limited time to engage with their students. Furthermore, during the proposal phase, scant attention is paid to the role of writing in research conceptualisation and scholarly development. In an attempt to address this neglect, the authors of this article worked collaboratively with academic staff from two schools within the Faculty of Commerce, Law, and Management at the University of the Witwatersrand to pilot academic literacies-informed projects aimed at integrating writing in the first year of existing postgraduate research programmes. This article provides insight into factors that constrain and enable such an integration endeavour. Data was collected through focus group discussions with the project teams from the participating schools. Drawing on Margaret Archer's structure, culture, and agency as the analytical framework, five themes emerged from the data: leadership and oversight, supervision and postgraduate pedagogy, supervisor awareness and support, the postgraduate research education curriculum, and student engagement and commitment. The authors discuss these themes in terms of their enabling and constraining dimensions, and conclude with observations that could inform similar initiatives in other postgraduate research programmes. Research writing is a crucial aspect of academic pursuits as one of the applied subjects in Senior High School. It involves careful scientific exploration, investigation, analysis and synthesis of existing knowledge to generate new ideas. Its accomplishment primarily lies on the clear and brief guidance of research format which this paper operationally defined as research typestyles as the physical structure and organization of a research study including the sections and content. Since establishment, the school has no existing localized materials developed to address confusions and uniformity among learners on what research format should be used and followed. Henceforth, this paper sought only to produce and evaluate the MRT: Morong National Senior High School Research Typestyles; a guide intended to scaffold the part-by-part research writing of Grades 11 and 12 learners of the said school. Affixed in developmental research design, selected twenty-six (26) experts through snowball sampling found that the three factors specifically the content, the format, and the presentation and organization of the developed research typestyles were very satisfactory. Thus, its validation results demonstrate that the developed MRT can be highly operative as an instructional material and a research format for teaching and guiding learner-researchers in research writing. The classic reading club, characterized by its unique professionalism, diversity, high degree of freedom, and normalization, is becoming an important research and educational platform in the humanities and social sciences field of universities. Within the resonance field created by the reading club, members engage in collective reading to identify research paper topics, engage in debates to inspire paper writing ideas, write notes to accumulate material for academic writing, and provide mutual feedback to refine paper details, gradually enhancing their academic writing skills. The classic reading club effectively cultivates students' "reading and writing literacy", enhances their critical academic thinking, and helps them acquire essential academic writing skills through continuous practice, filling the gap in traditional classroom teaching in training students' academic paper writing abilities. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a disruptive technology that has revolutionized various industries, including the field of research writing. In this article, we discuss the current trends and the potential benefits of open Artificial Intelligence (AI-) based tools for research writing, focusing on AI tools. The current trends show that AI tools enable researchers to perform complex data analysis, generate personalized content, and identify patterns that can aid decision-making. The goal of any research manuscript is to convey the story of a systematic answer to an important question in the field. A clear, succinct research or study question is what provides the storyline that connects all the sections of a manuscript. One of the most common strategies to developing a meaningful research question is the FINER approach, which encompasses five standards to determine the quality of a question: feasible, interesting, novel, ethical, and relevant. Using the FINER approach can provide the guidepost for all design and reporting decisions. This editorial recommends creating a study protocol aimed at answering your FINER research question before proceeding with any study.

Various models of writing groups for doctoral candidates are effective in developing research writing skills. While most groups focus on writing and providing feedback, less is written about groups that focus on empowering the research-writer through social interaction. This paper explores the impact of an ongoing fortnightly writing group as a regulated writing space for promoting wellbeing and fostering research-writer identity among doctoral candidates, whilst developing cognitive and social skills. Eight participants and the facilitator reflect on the effectiveness of this group using collaborative autoethnography. What began as a group of higher degree research students who wanted to develop their research writing skills, became a supportive community of practice which enhanced individuals' confidence to write, their research writing identities and wellbeing. Of significance was the writing expert as a facilitator. The study recommends that institutions value and create regular writing spaces for doctoral candidates to write, discuss their experiences as research-writers and in so doing, address their research writing identity and wellbeing, particularly given current concerns about mental health. Doctoral students need guidance from both language teachers and academic supervisors for academic publication. However, previous studies have predominantly focused on corrective feedback from language teachers. The small number of studies on supervisory feedback were mainly undertaken in English-speaking countries on theses and dissertations, and mostly examined supervisors in applied linguistics, who probably have much in common with language professionals. To fill the research gaps, we investigated the foci of the feedback from a non-English-speaking supervisor on drafts of his doctoral students' research article intended for a top conference in computer science. The results show that the supervisor commented not only on the content but also on the requirements for research writing, the logical flow of ideas, surface-level language issues, and visual elements. The findings can inform language teachers of what supervisors may value so that language professionals can provide feedback that better caters to the needs of students in research writing. This study aimed to investigate the research writing difficulties encountered by 66 secondary pre-service teachers at Laguna University, College of Education. The study focused on four sub-problems: identifying the difficulties encountered, exploring the underlying factors, discussing the implications, and identifying potential gaps. A mixed-method approach was employed, utilizing a survey questionnaire to determine difficulties, underlying factors, and implications, while content analysis was used to identify potential gaps. The study employed a total population technique. The findings revealed that the most common difficulties faced by secondary pre-service teachers in research writing were related to reviewing the literature, analyzing and interpreting data, and developing research proposals. Furthermore, limited knowledge of research methodologies, time constraints, and inadequate feedback and revision opportunities were identified as underlying factors contributing to these difficulties. These challenges had implications for their teaching practices, such as reduced confidence in integrating research into practice, limited opportunities to publish, present, and collaborate, and restricted professional advancement. The study also identified several gaps that need to be addressed by the College of Education, including the need to improve skills in reviewing literature, analyzing and interpreting data, and conducting proposal defenses. Additionally, addressing the limited knowledge of research methodologies, time constraints, and the need for more feedback and revision opportunities were identified as crucial. It is highly recommended that the College of Education addresses these gaps and challenges, empowering researchers to effectively integrate research into teaching, contribute to the field, and promote evidence-based practices in education. Scholarly publications are a key component of academics' development in their roles as teachers and researchers. Writing groups seem to be effective to accompany this process as participants share their texts to improve them through peer feedback. To help academic developers in the understanding and implementation of faculty writing groups, a detailed analysis of what members talk about during their meetings was carried out with three Ecuadorian writing groups, complemented by in-depth interviews. Discussions on research writing have always been associated with the teachers' role in influencing students' attitudes to pursue it. This study determined the teachers' role in students' attitudes toward research writing. This study was focused on the 124 Grade 12 students of Gingoog City Comprehensive National High School, Gingoog City, who took up Practical Research 2 subject using the mixed explanatory methodology research design. With descriptive statistics and linear regression analysis, the influence of teacher support on students' attitudes toward research writing was examined. The results revealed that students in their research writing experienced strong teacher support. Likewise, it was shown that teacher support directly impacts students' attitudes toward research. The study concluded that while other factors may affect students' attitudes toward research writing, the teacher factor was among the most significant. This further implies the need for teachers to provide students with holistic support, specifically instructional, to handle the subject effectively and sustain the students' interest in writing their papers.

This study aims to explore the specific research part where the students have difficulty writing the research paper. Identifying the weakest point can lead to the success of the research writing process. This study made an assessment of the competency level of the research students in writing their research paper. It utilized the quantitative descriptive method and followed the purposive sampling technique, wherein the lead researchers and writers were chosen as respondents in the study. Data revealed that females dominated the number of research leaders, and showed that the experimental research design was preferred by the research students. Moreso, it was revealed that students had difficulty in citing related literature and studies; writing the research questions in the Statement of the Problem; interpreting data; and formulating the research title. The recalibration of the research curriculum and integration of research parts with other subjects are recommended.

Background: The research writing of novice Russian authors tend to be markedly different from that of expert academic writers from other countries. More specifically, Russian student writing has been characterized as wordy, difficult to comprehend, syntactically complex, and excessive in terms of nominalisation. One of the main manifestations of these characteristics is the deployment of a large number of prepositions and prepositional phrases. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the causes of this excessive use of prepositions in Russian student writing and to provide suggestions for improvement. Methods: The quantitative analysis evaluates two self-compiled corpora using the computational linguistics tool Gramulator. The first corpus consists of published research papers written by international scholars of radio engineering. The second corpus comprises first drafts of research papers written by Russian graduate and postgraduate students majoring in radio engineering. The final qualitative analysis focuses largely on the student corpus. Results: The seven most common writing features identified were as follows: excessive of-phrases, nouns/verbal nouns instead of gerunds, nouns instead of infinitives of purpose, nominalized structures instead of relative clauses, ‘strong noun + weak verb’ structures instead of ‘strong’ verbs, grammatical errors, and repetitions. Each of these features is discussed and followed by suggestions that may help both reduce the excessive number of prepositions and prepositional phrases and improve other important features of the text. Implications: The results of this study are of interest to academic writing instructors as well as the developers of teaching materials and automated evaluation tools.

Research is among the least mastered areas of teachers in the Philippines. This phenomenological study explores teachers' social support systems and needs in writing research. Seventeen private SHS English teachers were purposefully selected from five private schools in Legazpi City, Philippines, who participated through group interviews using constructed questionnaires and video recordings. The thematic analysis used pattern recognition within the data and emerging themes as categories. The study discussed the social support and needs of the teachers along emotional, informational, and instrumental lines and suggested a faculty research support program based on the critical findings. Consequently, the study validates varied findings from previous research and may serve as a valuable reference for private institutions seeking to address their teachers' research needs. AWCF can facilitate academic writing development, especially for novice writers of English as a foreign language (EFL). Existing AWCF studies mainly focus on teacher and learner perceptions; fewer have investigated the error-correction effect of AWCF and factors related to the effect. Especially lacking is research on how successfully students can use AWCF to correct errors in source-based academic writing. Meanwhile, Grammarly, an automated writing evaluation (AWE) tool, is under-represented in AWCF studies despite its extensive use in EFL classrooms and its significant advantages. Correspondingly, we evaluated how effectively EFL students could use Grammarly-provided feedback for error correction in research writing and what factors were related to user responses (i.e., revision operations) and response accuracy. The results show that the error scores decreased significantly after revision and the participants correctly addressed 85% of the Grammarly-flagged usages. The error-correction success was impressive, considering how the technical nature of research writing might affect feedback accuracy and user responses, both related to response accuracy. In fact, feedback accuracy contributed to response accuracy both directly and indirectly (via user responses). Although the grant proposal is a high-stakes genre for researchers, there are few analyses available for consultation by learners and most studies investigate only a limited number of successful proposals written by experienced academics. This study reports on a genre analysis of a learner corpus of grant proposal summaries (abstracts), written by researchers who operate at the periphery of academia. The proposals were written by exiled Syrian academics and submitted to the Council for At-Risk Academics (Cara) grant awarding body for research funding. A corpus of 102 proposal summaries was compiled consisting of 27 successful and 75 unsuccessful summaries, and a genre framework of three moves and ten steps was developed. Successful summaries were contrasted with unsuccessful summaries; this comparison reveals that unsuccessful summaries underuse the move Indicating the value of the research. Specifically, they tend to omit two steps: Importance (of the research) and Research Outcomes. All Cara summaries were also compared with Matzler's (2021) prototype; results show that both successful and unsuccessful summaries underuse the Methods step. These findings provide pointers to the genre functions likely to be most problematic for learners, and have immediate practical applications in pedagogic materials for proposal writing. Background Recently, elective posting has been introduced by the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India in the undergraduate competency-based medical education (CBME) curriculum. To successfully implement it in medical colleges, facilitators (medical teachers) need to commit extra time. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of online teaching-learning methods for implementing an elective module for undergraduate medical students at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal, India. Methods An online module for systematic review methods was developed using the Delphi method. This module was used to train 30 medical students divided into six groups. One resident and one faculty facilitated each group. After the elective program of 15 days, program feedback and evaluation using the Kirkpatrick model were obtained from the students. Results A total of 30 undergraduate medical students with a mean age of 22.7±0.95 years participated in the study. All of them successfully conducted a systematic review per group. The students' feedback was 86.33% positive, and the project evaluation showed an 84% positive opinion. The highest score was for understanding, facilitators' knowledge, and experience. The lowest score was for the immediate applicability of the knowledge. Conclusion An online systematic review training module can be used for elective teaching-learning for final-year medical students, particularly within limited time and resource constraints. Students appreciated the module's clear objectives, appropriate complexity, and facilitators' expertise, leading to improved communication, engagement, and critical-thinking skills. Despite some limitations, these findings suggest that online learning can complement traditional methods and address logistical challenges in medical education, warranting further research on its long-term impact and broader applicability., Competing Interests: Human subjects: Consent was obtained or waived by all participants in this study. Research-intensive universities in the global peripheries have begun to mount English for research publication purposes (ERPP) initiatives to increase plurilingual scholars' publishing success. Though research into pedagogical initiatives is still limited, investigations of such programs can provide researchers with a greater understanding of the broader experiences and perspectives of scholars as well as the potential impact of interventions on course participants' scholarly writing. Answering the call for more longitudinal work in ERPP, this article outlines a small-scale, qualitative investigation of the perceived impact of an intensive ERPP course at a Mexican university on two environmental scientists' research writing five years following course completion. Data analysis included systematic review of participant CVs, as well as semi-structured interviews with two plurilingual EAL scientists and two ERPP practitioners connected to the ERPP course. Employing a critical plurilingual lens, this article discusses findings that not only outline the perceived impact of the intervention on these scientists' research writing at different stages of their academic trajectories, but also highlight the plurilingual nature of their evolving scholarly practices. The article culminates with data-driven suggestions for plurilingual conceptualization and enactment of scholarly writing pedagogies, policies, and research agendas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, the authors seek first to understand what a researcher experiences, before they tackle research writing per se. What makes this paper different is that it shows how researchers today are bereft of biological, psychological, and social guidance. Looking at people in this way leads the authors to think differently about research and its relationship to knowledge. The researcher’s body speaks and writes. The authors focus on trials and creative research where the researcher’s body, emotions, and feelings react to how they experience their relationship to others through temporalities, rhythms, and shifts

Writing Studies scholars have raised concerns about framing student struggles to integrate secondary sources as an ethical problem of plagiarism. They propose, instead, framing student citation practices as transitional markers of development in which students use patchwriting to learn the discursive norms and values of academia. Patchwriting as a literacy tool for transfer of knowledge raised questions for me about whether students develop other scaffolds to aid in learning transfer. In this pilot study, I investigate student use of anchor sources, the “perfect source” that frames a student’s central argument, rhetorical structure, and/or purpose. Based on a random sample of a nationwide corpus of First-Year Writing research papers from 16 US institutions, findings show that 21 of 30 research papers (70%) revealed evidence of an anchor source. Six of the 9 papers without anchor sources show evidence of significant rhetorical problems. Results suggest evidence of knowledge transfer, as well as pedagogical implications for supporting this transitional stage in student development.

As pressures around academic writing mount, human geographers have developed critical strategies to resist and rework the institutional politics of research writing. Overlooked, until now, is the role of pedagogy. We advance an engaged pedagogy of research writing and use this concept to propose three practical strategies: (1) understanding writing as social practice; (2) reimagining the temporalities of writing; and, (3) reimagining the spatialities of writing. We argue that an engaged pedagogical approach expands the possibilities of how human geographers can critically and practically respond to the institutional politics of research writing. At postgraduate level, success often depends on the ability to produce quality academic writing. To develop a framework to support postgraduate research writing, we explored the writing experiences of twenty-four postgraduate students from non-native English-speaking backgrounds. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with these participants, who were enrolled in two institutions that have international branch campuses in Malaysia. Data were then analysed using an inductive thematic analysis approach. It was found that students' research experiences centre around three areas: academic writing; supervisory support; and institutional support services and tools. From these insights, we now propose a framework containing three dimensions and argue for pedagogically driven writing support; pedagogically informed supervisory support; and targeted and systematic peripheral support. As this framework is driven by the experiences and needs of postgraduate students, we believe it could lead to a more enriching learning experience and also greater student satisfaction. Determining, detailing, and also developing a certain topic to form a scientific paper in accordance with the rules of research report should be a common knowledge among students. However, the reality is far from that. A succint method is needed so that the obstacles can be minimized. This research was conducted to help students improve their scientific writing skills by applying the Deep Dialogue Critical Thinking (DDCT) method, which was carried out using a quasi-experimental research design involving pretest and posttest of the DDCT method treatment. A total of 25 psychology’s students were involved in this study. The results showed that there was a difference between the pretest and posttest of the treatment given by the DDCT method on the ability to write scientific papers in students (p=.00). It means that the DDCT method was effective in improving the student’s ability to write scientific papers. This method can help students develop their ideas in determining, planning, reviewing, and developing research topics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article provides a description and analysis of the way in which research degree students and their supervisors at one Australian university (the University of South Australia) use a popular online plagiarism-detection system, iThenticate. The study identifies how these two groups use iThenticate by analysing usage data together with data from an anonymous online survey conducted 12 months after the university took out a pilot subscription to the system. One hundred and nineteen students and 26 supervisors responded to the survey, representing 61% and 43% of the active users in each category. The survey found that the two groups of respondents used the system differently but that, while for both groups iThenticate's regulatory function in preventing plagiarism (whether international or accidental) was important, the system's potential educational function in improving research writing capability and publication was equally important. The study highlights the value of regarding the use of anti-plagiarism software so as to encourage a move way from a simple focus on its punitive regulatory dimension and towards its educational possibilities and suggests directions for future research on the relationship between this type of software and the ways scholars work with other people's texts to recreate meanings and develop original contributions. Implications for practice or policy: Online plagiarism detection systems (such as iThenticate) can be used either negatively to police doctoral students' practice or positively to improve their research writing practice. Almost every aspect of life has been disrupted due to the erupting of COVID-19 pandemic; education is arguably one of the most effected fields. The shift towards online education had become the focus of many studies to examine the students' perceived learning outcomes as well as their satisfaction in virtual learning settings. This study investigates the effect of the abrupt switch to online teaching on the written production of the curriculum and instruction postgraduate students' research writing for the academic year 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The sample comprises 53 PhD and Post-Graduate students in the department of curriculum and instructions in the faculty of educational Sciences at Mut'ah University in Jordan. The data were collected using a close-ended questionnaire which elicits responses on a five-point Likert Scale. A thorough examination of the instrument's reliability and validity was conducted. Results showed that students and universities administrations have been quickly adapted themselves to the new changes, with perceptible positive attitudes among the PhD and Post-Graduate students regarding the virtual activities applied in teaching and learning writing. This study provides a source for university instructors, syllabus designer and policy makers on the importance of integrating online learning in as part on the universities conventional. The byzantine conventions of advanced academic writing in English are notoriously difficult for graduate students and junior scholars to gain control over. Global higher education and academic publishing have seen a massive expansion in recent years, so that the ability to demonstrate insider disciplinary competence and a grasp of scholarly persuasion has become essential for academic success. With courses in English for Research and Publication Purposes (ERPP) in their infancy and unknown in many countries, writers often turn to the advice of style manuals for guidance. Here they often find recommendations to follow general principles of clarity, brevity and objectivity and are given advice on specific features to achieve this. In this paper we examine three of the most commonly referred to features: demonstrative ‘this’, existential ‘there’ and first-person pronouns. With the aid of a diachronic corpus of articles from four disciplines over the past 50 years, we find that expert use of these features has increasingly departed from the advice in the guides. We describe how the use of these features has changed and stress what instructors in ERPP courses might teach

Although various e-learning technologies have been in use for decades, the rapid worldwide spread of COVID-19 has made online teaching and learning 'the new normal'. Many academic units, such as our team of Learning Advisors at Auckland University of Technology, have had to make quick decisions about the design of online learning experiences for students. This study reports on the creation of online writing workshops for postgraduate research students. In our context, research students can self-enrol in 'one-off' workshops where they typically do not know each other. As teaching staff, we also had little prior knowledge of how best to design student participation in synchronous writing activities. An initial challenge was thus to identify different means through which students can participate online, and then use these findings to inform workshop design. Our findings centre on an online participation matrix with two sets of simultaneous options: whether participants are identified or not; and whether their participation occurs as a series of discrete actions by individuals, or as simultaneous actions by multiple participants. In Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, we found that these combinations give rise to observant, anonymous, episodic, concealed, or discursive participation. We define and illustrate each of these participation types, discuss their sequencing across an entire workshop, and reflect on specific adaptations from face to face settings. These findings are of particular relevance to teachers who are exploring a variety of software features and want to make principled choices for the design of activities in online writing workshops.

The 21 century is the time of globalization, which is manifested in the extensive use of the English language as the language of science and education. In the time of the high level of academic mobility and the great number of the English-language programs, the course “English Medium Instruction” has acquired its international reputation. According to the research conducted by the British Council, 55 countries worldwide became EMI countries. Russia was not a member. However, Russia also experiences the world trend of internationalization of education, thus the linguoprofes-sional competence plays a significant role in the learning process. Realization of the interdisciplinary approach to education has been the Russian case study of the course “English Medium Instruction” in the leading research university MIPT. The article considers the case of cooperation of the teacher with the course participants - MIPT faculty - in the process of the writing up of the syllabus. In the course of study, participants got interested in the issues of academic writing - English for research publication purposes (Research Writing) and Student Writing as the constituent and mandatory part of academic courses. Course participants considered the macrostructure of the professionally-oriented genres of writing - a research article and its types - and the most frequent difficulties and errors that occur in writing. Course participants got the answers how to integrate the writing tasks in their own course in the workshop called “Student Writing” addressing the typical student genres of data report, summary, annotated bibliography, thesis project. Course participants discussed how to create a writing task assignment in an interesting and professional way, what research skills are required for students, what are the evaluation criteria, and if it is necessary to assess the language errors and how. One more way of addressing the academic discourse was the genre of presentations. Being a hybrid genre that includes an oral part and a written part, presentations have a great learning potential, which makes it possible to compare and contrast special features of an informal and formal style. By the end of the course several participants could make some changes and even rewrite their syllabus. The author hopes that such a course with CLIL component will find its place in the Russian universities.

The student-advisor relationship is critical within the academic research environment in doctoral education. Like academic staff, doctoral students write papers, present data, and teach. As such, doctoral students communicate with academic staff to learn academic discourse as well as contribute to the output of research. In Japan, the relationship between doctoral student and advisor in a Japanese university context can be complicated by a lack of a common language between international doctoral students and Japanese advisors. Not all Japanese faculty are proficient in English and many international doctoral students are English Foreign Language (EFL) learners not proficient in Japanese. In addition, cultural traditions such as the senpai-kohai relationship that require deep respect of teachers by students can stifle communication between doctoral students and Japanese advisors. This qualitative study examines the use of English writing groups as a pedagogical tool and third-party facilitator as part of a communities of practice approach to improve English communication skills of doctoral student EFL learners in a Japanese university context. At a Japanese national university, we organized English speaking writing groups that consisted of eleven international doctoral students, three non-Japanese professors and one Japanese professor who met over a sixteen-week period. Despite the writing group’s aim to produce a research paper in English, results from this study show improvement in workplace communication skills of dialogue, presentation, and the ability to ask questions.

Research writing is an important part of doctoral study. Previous studies suggest that students who speak English as an additional language (EAL) may experience difficulties in writing a thesis in English. This study investigated the nature of the writing challenges experienced by EAL doctoral students. Drawing on data collected from individual semi-structured interviews with 27 EAL doctoral students in various disciplines at an Australian university, this study found that while many participants encountered linguistic challenges and socio-cultural challenges, some participants thought that native speakers also faced challenges in academic writing. Major linguistic challenges reported were over-reliance on translation and L1–L2 rhetorical differences. Additional challenges included lacking local learning experiences, difference in learning expectations, and social isolation. This study has practical implications for curriculum design of language support services for doctoral students and training programs for supervisors. Doctoral students face many challenges when writing research articles. However, little is known about how they regulate their writing process in a natural context, due partially to the lack of methods to explore writing regulation from a situated perspective. The present study aims at demonstrating a method to explore doctoral students' writing regulation processes within their context of occurrence in ecological conditions. To do so, we focus on the writing process of Natalia, a second-year doctoral student, while she writes and revises an extended abstract for her first scientific article under natural conditions. Screen-recorder and keystroke logging software, writing logs, an open-ended questionnaire and drafts of her text were used to collect data about the processes and products, and about both her actions and perceptions. Analysis combining these different data allowed us to identify two types of episodes: production and regulation episodes, and six subtypes of regulation episodes, and link them to the section of the text and the challenges the writer addressed with each episode. Results also showed that regulation processes vary between sessions, in terms of frequency and in their goals, and that feedback promoted a problemsolving approach to writing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research approaches that emphasize embodied practice and value the idiosyncratic uptake of writing technologies should be central to how writing researchers process the early moment of generative AI's availability to public audiences. Based on a qualitative analysis of 35 publicly available videos depicting the use of ChatGPT and Bing, the study offers a framework of descriptive codes that identify practices early adopters enact when integrating these technologies into research writing processes. The research contributes three key categories of practice that describe research writers' interaction with generative AI across research design, writing research genres, and proofreading and editing: requesting, evaluating , and refining. This study is significant for providing an early descriptive analysis of the uptake of ChatGPT in research writing, while also identifying how disparate uses of generative AI technologies emerge from conflicting beliefs about writing, research, and invention. In particular, the study describes how experts in writing and research portray uses of and attitudes toward these technologies that often differ from students who are learning to research and write in their respective fields. A research paper is widely considered an important requirement produced by learners. However, writing a research paper has been a common challenge for most Senior High School learners. In the Philippines, most Senior High School learners have difficulty in explicating their contentions in their study due to their lack of knowledge in conducting and writing a research paper. One of their problems is applying the academic writing conventions such as formality in writing, coherence, grammar, and other related skills involved in writing conventions in writing a scholarly paper. Hence, this study aims to enhance learners' research writing skills by utilizing Instructional Scaffolding as a teaching technique that provides support systems, like reinforcements or relevant activities in molding independent learners, until it becomes unnecessary for them. This quantitative study determined the effectiveness of Instructional Scaffolding by applying correction symbols as an intervention on the difficulties experienced by the Senior High School grade 12 STEM learners in writing a research paper. Twenty-five research papers were investigated by analyzing them with the checklist used by Erel and Bulut (2007), which was also subjected to the T-test formula. The results of this study revealed a decrease in Mean error scores from 75.52 to 20.52, which indicates a significant improvement in the learners’ writings of learners in their research paper. This result implied that instructional scaffolding enhanced the writing competence of learners in writing a research paper.

Although co-authoring is commonly practised, we know little about its actual process. How do authors choose their collaborators? How do they make decisions about the writing process? What obstacles do they face and how do they overcome them? What do they see as the benefits and pitfalls of coauthoring? This article begins by demonstrating the prevalence of co-authoring of journal articles in the field of Applied Linguistics and TESOL. The somewhat limited literature on authoring, particularly collaboration, is reviewed. Using a duoethnographic approach, as researcher-participants we research our own co-authoring process and present our findings in a case study. Key ideas related to choosing and working effectively with co-authors and important qualities in a co-author are discussed, encapsulated in the maxims of mutual benefit and relationship building. We also reflect on our experience of using duoethnography to capture disruptions to our thinking about the co-authoring process and developments in our understanding of ourselves as writers and of our relationship as coauthors. The article concludes by reiterating the benefits that both less experienced and more experienced authors can derive from co-authoring and by recommending co-authoring as an important supportive and collaborative practice for professional development.
