A successful multidisciplinary research center depends on the quality of the science being conducted and the quality of the center's design, culture, infrastructure, and institutional support. In this perspective, we describe our experience building and maintaining a multidisciplinary transplant research center with a large focus on transplant infectious diseases. We identify principles that we believe contributed to our success including: taking inventory, defining culture, creating a multidisciplinary shared leadership model, establishing expertise in a multiple method approach, investing in operations and management, building and sharing resources, and securing institutional support. The proposals of think tanks nowadays carry weight in political actions worldwide. The communicative actions of these centers are crucial in the relationship with their diverse audiences for their initiatives to have a notable influence. Through a quantitative content analysis, the present study gathers communicative tools and measures the degree of interactivity promoted by these online research centers through their official websites, the medium that has the greatest impact on their visibility and influence. The research focuses on the 25 most influential think tanks in Central and South America, according to the 2020 Global Go To Think Tank Index. The results show that the level of interactivity offered by the unidirectional tools of these think tanks is considerably high. However, in the case of bidirectional resources, which provide a greater opportunity for interaction and dialogue with the web user, greater use is made of those of an asymmetrical nature. The COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Research Committee (CoVaSC) was established in November 2021 to address the growing need for independent, in-depth scientific evidence on adverse events (AEs) following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination. This initiative was requested by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and led by the National Academy of Medicine of Korea. In September 2022, the COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Research Center was established, strengthening CoVaSC’s initiatives. The center has conducted various studies on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. During CoVaSC’s second research year, from September 29, 2022 to July 19, 2023, the center was restructured into 4 departments: Epidemiological Research, Clinical Research, Communication & Education, and International Cooperation & Policy Research. Its main activities include (1) managing CoVaSC and the COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Research Center, (2) surveying domestic and international trends in AE causality investigation, (3) assessing AEs following COVID-19 vaccination, (4) fostering international collaboration and policy research, and (5) organizing regular fora and training sessions for the public and clinicians. Causality assessments have been conducted for 27 diseases, and independent research has been conducted after organizing ad hoc committees comprising both epidemiologists and clinical experts on each AE of interest. The research process included protocol development, data analysis, interpretation of results, and causality assessment. These research outcomes have been shared transparently with the public and healthcare experts through various fora. The COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Research Center plans to continue strengthening and expanding its research activities to provide reliable, high-quality safety information to the public.

Originalidade/valor: A criação de espaço colaborativo, envolvendo aca-dêmicos e praticantes, para coprodução de conhecimento, tem sido apontada como crítica para impulsionar a área de gestão de projetos. O framework estabelece uma linguagem comum entre acadêmicos e praticantes para potencializar o impacto dos resultados de pesquisas colaborativas em gestão de projetos. Design/metodologia/abordagem: Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática da literatura a partir de uma busca nas bases de dados Scopus e Web of Science, e avaliaram-se 11 frameworks sob a perspectiva de impactos sustentáveis. O framework mais aderente foi identificado, analisado e enriquecido com uma camada adicional dedicada à área de gestão de projetos. Resultados: O framework conceitual proposto é composto por quatro camadas: project studies, elementos processuais (recursos, atividades, resultados diretos, indiretos e impactos), mecanismos organizacionais de suporte e circunstâncias, e contexto. Como estudos futuros, sugerem-se a agregação de dados empíricos à estrutura proposta e a avaliação do framework em um ambiente acadêmico colaborativo.

The article presents the results of a study of how inhabitants of a settlement with scientific center status perceive projects for new facilities of science and technology infrastructure. The study was based on data from mass surveys conducted in 2006 and 2021 in Novosibirsk Akademgorodok. Its relevance is related to problems that most Russian scientific centers and science cities faced in the post-Soviet period and the need to transform these specific urban settlements. To solve these problems, various projects are being implemented to transform their environment, including the creation of technology parks and other new facilities of science and technology infrastructure. Their success depends largely on social factors, including how the population perceives innovations. Two projects for the creation of new facilities of science and technology infrastructure in Akademgorodok, Novosibirsk, are being considered: Technopark (2006) and the SKIF (Siberian Circular Photon Source) Collective Use Center (2021). The population's perception of these projects was assessed by the following parameters: awareness of the project, attitude towards the project, and negative and positive expectations from the project's implementation. This study reviewed the literature to understand "how does research produce impact?". Despite all discussion threads in the literature, it was clear that management of the Front-end of Innovation (FEI) of non-profit research centers has received little attention. As a result, this study was a first step toward proposing a model that describes the Front-End of R&D at non-profit Research Centers. This paper is an Integrative Literature Review that follows the PRISMA statement methodology. Building on FEI2O's High-Level Ontology, this paper's contribution elicited relevant constructs from the literature and took the first steps to extend it to the Front-End of R&D. New research-related concepts such as the RESEARCH CONCEPT, the INFLUENCING FACTORS, and the RESEARCH PROJECT were introduced. The RESEARCH PROJECT produces RESULTS that may have an IMPACT ON SOCIETY. All these concepts are interconnected through a feedback loop that feeds the FEI2O: STRATEGIC PURPOSE of the non-profit research center, contributing to the advancement of its research strategy, objectives, and goals. The current work contributed to understanding a domain of knowledge that is of interest to researchers, research managers, and those interested in bringing new scientific research results to society. Abstract We investigated how the potential distribution of Histiotus velatus is affected by the addition of new records over decades (decade effect). Assuming that (1: hypothesis of the effect of the decade) the addition of new occurrence records over time increases the potential size of the species distribution; and (2: Wallacean distance hypothesis) over the years, the new points added are increasingly distant from the research centers. Considering the geographic knowledge gap of this species, our objective is to report a new record of this species and estimate its potential distribution in South America through environment niche models (ENMs). For this, we compiled records of occurrence of species, selected from 1900 to 2015. We used 19 bioclimatic variables available in the WorldClim database to estimate the potential distribution of the species, and we used three modeling algorithms: Maximum Entropy (MXT), Random Forest (RDF), and Support Vector Machine. To test the Wallacean distance hypothesis, we calculated the Euclidian distance from occurrences to bat research centers in Brazil, located using a national researchers’ information dataset (“Plataforma Lattes”). To test the hypothesis of the decade effect, we used the beta regression analysis, taking conservative and non‐conservative approaches. The results showed that the predicted area expanded and retracted with the addition of new occurrences over the decades, with an improvement in the accuracy of models. Most records are located in the southeastern region of Brazil, but algorithms predicted areas in regions where there are no records. Only the conservative approach has had a positive relationship over the decades. The distance from new points does not increase over the years of research centers.

Mobile apps are always evolving to make our lives simpler. This research study focuses on developing a cross-platform mobile application for TIU’s research center’s Research Plan Management System (RPMS). TIU currently does not have a mobile application that allows academics to submit their annual research plans and proposals online rather than filling out paper or electronic forms. This study was done at TIU’s research center for an experimental object, and it used Flutter as a development platform, Firebase as a backend database, and Dart as a programming language to create a mobile app that serves as a research management system for the institution. It enables related departments to track the research publication process until it reaches the final stage, and staff may electronically submit their research plans and acquire the appropriate permissions, as well as allowing the Research Center and departments to view real staff progress. According to our study survey, more than 70% of TIU staff believe that using a mobile application to submit and follow-up with the research plan is better than the traditional paper-based system.

This research analyzes patterns of scientific production, citation and collaborative networks under three relationships (researcher/ researcher, researcher/center, and researcher/country), of the most productive researchers of four Latin American Marine Research Centers (MICs) over a 20-year period (2000-2020) from a bibliometric perspective. e Scopus search engine was used for the respective bibliometric analyses. In total, 57 most productive researchers were identified among the four centers; 5, 7, 14 and 31 for Centro i~mar, IOUSP, IICYM and CICESE, respectively. In two (i~mar and IICYM) of the four centers, researchers (AB) and (OI) recorded the highest number of publications, and were also the most cited; however, this pattern did not hold true for IOUSP and CICESE researchers. e collaboration network among the most productive researchers is segmented in certain defined groups, which causes a lack of internal cooperation among them, especially in Centro i~mar and IOUSP. In addition, it was evidenced that the most productive researchers concentrate their collaborations with other researchers belonging to Universities, Institutions or Centers of their own country, and very scarcely with international Centers, being their international cooperation conservative which in turn demonstrates scientific autonomy, and does not require external partners to make their research visible. This research contributes with the knowledge of the most productive centers and is the basis for future studies that suggests orienting and extending the analysis of the productivity of researchers with fewer publications and citations, as well as the analysis of their internal collaboration network. Project Citizen is a civic education curriculum used across the US and internationally in 75 countries, but research centers’ roles on Project Citizen lack literature. This paper examines the findings of a preliminary study designed to answer the “How does citizenship education occur through project-based learning via a research center at a university in the US?” question. In this case study, which is one of the qualitative research methods, the study group comprises faculty members, teaching assistants, teachers, and administrators working in the College of Education and research center with Project Citizen’s applications. The great majority of the participants were from the field of social studies education The data were collected through semi-structured interview forms, audiotaping, and observation. The transcription of the data set is done by using Dragon Professional software. Findings revealed that the mission of the research center’s structure, studies, personnel, and budget is an essential factor; the research center plays an active role in addressing the problems of its practice by providing the teachers with the necessary in-service training support and student guidance. Besides, there are suggestions to be taken into account in the study of establishing a similar research center. The beginning of an innovation process, also known as “front-end of innovation” (FEI), counts as an essential contributor to the successful development of new products and for their market appeal. Nevertheless, while helpful procedures and techniques for developing new products are well-known and widely applied, FEI is still an understudied area, and models for managing it are not yet commonly used in technology-oriented companies. FEI, also known as "fuzzy front end", can even be "fuzzier" in not-for-profit research centers. That is because the focus of these centers is advancing of scientific knowledge, rather than commercializing the results of those activities. This study summarizes the insights from a literature review on the topic of “project portfolio management” (PPM) in relation to innovation and, more specifically, with FEI and its components of ideation, innovation management, innovation strategy, foresight, and incremental or radical innovation. The authors selected and reviewed content from 170 papers published in SCOPUS prior to February 2019. The discussion uses a theoretical framework called "Front-End of Innovation Integrative Ontology (FEI2O)" to assist in framing the discussion.

Professors serving as co-directors of a university-based entrepreneurship center undertook a unique venture in partnering with the economic development department of the resident county to develop a regional entrepreneurship center dedicated to serving students and members of the local community. This intra-governmental partnership is novel in its approach, design, and impact. Background: Peer based evaluation is a qualitative assessment done in different fields and levels. The aim of this study was to express the results of peer review evaluation in selected Iranian clinical research centers. Methods: Four main domains consist of Leadership and governance, Structure, Knowledge products and Impact in thirty Iranian clinical research centers were evaluated based on peer review in 2019. Strengths and weak points with peer`s suggestions were extracted based on qualitative analysis. Results: Governance and impact domains have been more weak points than others. Equipment, facilities, physical space and human resource have been desirable in many research centers, and also there were some good developments in research publication. The most important suggestion was pay more attention to technology in planning, infra-structure and impact levels. Conclusion: Review missions of clinical research centers with more emphasis on health impact is necessary to clinical improvement.

The Berman Award honors the memory of a great philanthropist who championed development of systematic data about American Jewry. Our honorees – Joseph Neubauer, Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer and Alan Cooperman – are owed a debt of gratitude for their support and leadership of the Pew Research Center's studies of US Jewry. Research Centre for Science and Technology covers an area of 460 Ha located in South Tangerang, functions as a central place and interacts with influenced regions due to the need for industrialization and commercialization of research results. This is relates with Central Place Theory that’s spatial relations and its spreading arise as a natural consequence of market interactions that include small-scale economy with various forms of output. This study aims to determine how vast the spatial interaction of Puspiptek’s activities, by using descriptive quantitative method. Analytical techniques that used are descriptive analysis, Likert scoring, Klee weighting and spatial analysis. Indicators for backward linkage: (1)labor, (2)infrastructure, (3)support cooperation, and (4)investment then for forward linkage: (1)patents, (2)scientific publications, (3)scientific activities, (4)commercial cooperation and (5)profit. Backward and forward linkage then describe Puspiptek’s hierarchical condition. The result is spatial interaction Puspiptek in the national scope, supported by backward linkage is 54% of the labor domiciled from various regions in Indonesia and forward linkage into the national class category with a score of 770 from the range 547 - 1.001. The result can be a recommendation for some authorities as a consideration in the preparation of spatial plans framework to realize the proposed of Puspiptek as a National Strategic Area.

In recent decades, research on mountains has become more inter- and transdisciplinary, but a greater effort is needed if such research is to contribute to a societal transformation toward sustainability. Mountain research centers are a crucial actor in this endeavor. Yet, the literature has not paid sufficient attention to how these centers should (re-)design inter- and transdisciplinary research. In this study, we explored this question with a self-reflexive approach. We analyzed the first 15 months of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mountain Research (CIRM) of the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) through qualitative data collected via interviews and observation. We used a simple model of inter- and transdisciplinarity at the organizational level of a research center. Special attention was devoted to the individual and collective ability to exploit the unexpected (serendipity). Our results indicate an interdependency between the coconstruction of research objects and the creation of integrative partnerships. They also shed light on the types of institutional resources and integrative methodologies that enhance inter- and transdisciplinary research, as well as their challenges. Our experience shows that implementing inter- and transdisciplinarity requires deep changes in research evaluation procedures, research funding policies, and researchers themselves. Serendipity is in turn shown to play an important role in inter- and transdisciplinarity due to its potential to change the research process in creative ways. We speculate that serendipity offers unique opportunities to capitalize on hidden resources that can catalyze a radical transformation of mountain researchers, research organizations, and society in the face of unprecedented global change.

This is a report describing the events that resulted in the establishment of “The Wolfgang Mieder International Proverb Library” in May of 2019 at the University of Vermont. It is an account of Prof. Mieder’s donation of about 9000 proverb collections and studies about proverbs to his university. They are now housed in the historical Billings Library on campus. As a research center it welcomes scholars and students from anywhere to pursue their paremiographical and paremiological research projects. The report also includes a number of press releases that reported on this exciting matter. Several pictures of the beautiful bookcases appear at the end of these accounts.

This research determines the factors that inhibit the systematic use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the educational processes of the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas del Noroeste, SC (CIBNOR). In the same way it examines the level of affectation in the adoption of these technologies for factors such as age, the relation of the teaching practice, the perceived incentive by its exercise, the professional and job profile, among others. Therefore, a quantitative research was carried out, applying a survey to the entire academic staff of CIBNOR, statistically examining the correlation of the data and the graphical analysis of dispersion and regression. The results show that the profile of the institution's academics, generally of PhD dedicated to the research of some branch of biology, does not constitute a factor that affects the familiarity, use, attitude and competencies that they have on the ICT; age is shown as an insignificant factor, however, the insufficiency of the economic incentives towards the teaching is outlined as the factor that inhibits the adoption of the technology in their practices, causing the academics of the institution to subordinate the practice of teaching to their research activities.

Our experience shows that implementing inter- and transdisciplinarity requires deep changes in research evaluation procedures, research funding policies, and researchers themselves. Serendipity is in turn shown to play an important role in inter- and transdisciplinarity due to its potential to change the research process in creative ways. We speculate that serendipity offers unique opportunities to capitalize on hidden resources that can catalyze a radical transformation of mountain researchers, research organizations, and society in the face of unprecedented global change. With the growing complexity of societal and scientific problems, research centers have emerged to facilitate the conduct of research beyond disciplinary and institutional boundaries. While they have become firmly established in the global university landscape, research centers raise some critical questions for research evaluation. Existing evaluation approaches designed to assess universities, departments, projects, or individual researchers fail to capture some of the core characteristics of research centers and their participants, including the diversity of the involved researchers, at what point in time they join and leave the research center, or the intensity of their participation. In addressing these aspects, this article introduces an advanced approach for the ex post evaluation of research centers. It builds on a quasi-experimental within-group design, bibliometric analyses, and multilevel statistics to assess average and individual causal effects of research center affiliation on participants along three dimensions of research performance. The evaluation approach is tested with archival data from a center in the field of sustainability science. Against a widely held belief, we find that participation in research centers entails no disadvantages for researchers as far as their research performance is concerned. The Research Center of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Airlangga is one of workplaces that have various risks to cause occupational accidents. The use of various chemicals, specimens, and special instruments at the Research Center has potential to cause various risks that can threaten workers, assets, and environment. To prevent and control every hazard with potential negative risks, a risk management using HIRADC method must be implemented. This study aims to implement Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Determinant Control (HIRADC) method in the Research Center of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Airlangga. This study is descriptive research with a cross-sectional design. Data collection was done through direct observation in the workplace and interview with a laboratory worker at the Research Center. The Research Center of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Airlangga has a moderate risk. The research results showed that of the 5 work activities, there were 20 potential hazards with 20 risks identified. Based on the risk assessment, there are 1 extreme risk, 1 high risk, 11 moderate risks, and 7 low risks. The extreme risks identified are explosion, fire, and death caused by LPG. The high risks identified are explosion, poisoning, and death caused by CO2 gas. Based on the determinant control, there are 15 controls implemented including substitution control, engineering control, administration control, and wearing personal protective equipment. However, there are still 5 controls that have not been implemented. Further recommendations are needed for 5 controls that have not been implemented in every activity conducted in the Research Center of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Airlangga. Abstract. Focusing in a specific technology sector would be a great strategy for early developed Science and Technology Park (STP) especially in Indonesia. Each STP has its own concept considering the resources and technology supply. This should be main considerations in determining STP focus. Cibinong Science and Technology Park (CSTP) is surrounded by 4 research centers, and Center for Innovation. Their patent database within 5 years has been studied to determine CSTP focus. By using qualitative method and descriptive analysis, the results showed that the top priority is agriculture, followed by pharmaceutical. Moreover, the strategic areas for development in agriculture sector include: soil working; horticulture; preservation of bodies; and biocides. And in pharmaceutical sub sector includes: preparations for medical, dental, or toilet purposes; specific therapeutic activity of chemical compounds or medicinal preparations; and heterocyclic compounds. Furthermore, China can be a benchmark for technology development in agriculture, while US for technology development in pharmaceutical. Increased funding of nanotechnology research in the USA at the turn of the millennium was paired with a legislative commitment to and a novel societal research policy for the responsible development of nanotechnology. Innovative policy discourses at the time suggested that such work could engage a variety of publics, stakeholders, and researchers to enhance the capacity of research systems to adapt and be responsive to societal values and concerns. This article reviews one of two federally funded social science research centers—the Center for Nanotechnology in Society at Arizona State University(CNS-ASU)—to assess the merits of this form of engaged social science research in which social science contributes not only to traditional knowledge production but also to the capacity of natural science and engineering researchers and research communities for greater reflexivity and responsiveness, ultimately producing more socially robust research systems. Pasteur Institute of Iran, as one of the oldest leading research and public health centers in Iran and in the Middle East, was established in 1920 following an agreement between the Institute Pasteur of Paris and the Iranian government to improve the health status in Iran. This institute has played a great role in the prevention and control of infectious diseases in Iran and in the world during its approximate one hundred years of research background by conducting research studies associated with the control of infectious diseases, producing vaccines and biological products. This institute can be a useful model for the country and the region because of its brilliant records and its significant activities. This article reviews the Pasteur Institute of Iran services and research activities during its almost one hundred years of activity.

Abstract The contamination of aquatic habitats has become a serious problem for sustainability of the fisheries sector in Pakistan. Among different pollutants, heavy metals are very toxic. Their toxicity can be assessed by using antioxidant enzymes as biomarkers. These enzymes protect the living organisms from the oxidative stress caused by the heavy metals. Therefore, the effect of lead chloride (PbCl2) on the peroxidase enzyme activity in the tissues (liver and kidney) of Cirrhinamrigala was investigated. Four groups of Cirrhinamrigala were exposed, separately, to 96-hr LC50 concentration of PbCl2 along with its sub-lethal concentrations, viz.2/3rd, 1/4th and 1/5th for a period of 30 days. Another group of fish was kept in metal free media as a control. After 30 days, fish were dissected and their liver and kidney isolated and preserved for enzyme assay. Peroxidase activity in the tissues of PbCl2 exposed Cirrhinamrigala was compared with the control group. Researchers and universities are increasingly urged to communicate their findings to the general public. Despite the broad consensus about the necessity of this task, researchers are still reluctant to engage in public outreach activities. One major reason is that while being somewhat time consuming, engagement in public outreach is not adequately reflected in the metrics that are relevant for career advancement. The study at hand examines to what extent this dilemma is empirically justified. A series of statistical analyses are carried out on the basis of data from a sustainability science research center in Switzerland. The study comes to the conclusion that research performance is overall positively associated to engagement in public outreach activities. An effective research center within a transportation organization can be a valuable asset to accomplish the goals of the overall mission. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) Research Center. This study performed a detail analysis on the proposals submitted to WYDOT from 2011 to 2017 to evaluate the effectiveness of the WYDOT Research Center. The analysis included the investigation of performance measures. These performance measures are quantifiable, meaning they are designed to place a score or value on the accomplishments of the WYDOT Research Center which can then be used to make managerial decisions for the Research Center. As a part of the study, feedback and performance evaluation surveys were obtained from the Principal Investigators (PIs) and the WYDOT Project Champions. Project champions are the individuals within WYDOT who leads to finish the research projects successfully. In addition, a methodology for benefit-to-cost analysis (BCA) was developed as a future performance measure. • This study evaluated performance of the WYDOT Research Center based on several performance measures. • This study developed strategies that will implement real benefit-to-cost analyses for the WYDOT Research Center. • Results indicated that the WYDOT Research Center is very effective and moving into the right direction. Technology gap of the Slovak public R&D organizations hinder overall scientific as well as business capability. In order to reduce structural barriers, several supporting mechanisms were implemented during 2007-2013 programming period. Crucial approach supported key institutional innovation in last decades within public R&D environment. In total, 14 projects were supported to build a comprehensive R&D infrastructure. The science parks and research centers were built with the aim to enhance interaction of public R&D organizations with the real economy and foster technology transfer. They have contributed to overall scientific activity, enhance cooperation with variety of innovation actors as well as create technology transfer mechanisms. Nevertheless, overall effects are still suboptimal due to ban on revenue generation as well as absence of complementary funding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Center For Health Administration Studies (CHAS) is an interdisciplinary health policy and services research center located at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. Since its inception, CHAS has pursued the mission of conducting and promoting research and knowledge development to reduce health inequities and improve access. The move of CHAS to the School of Social Service Administration from the Graduate School of Business in 1991 resulted in innovative programming reflecting the changing landscape of health care, passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Medicaid expansion, and the growing interest of social work researchers in social determinants of health, behavioral health and integrated health and social services. The success and distinction of CHAS over its eighty year history offers lessons to social work regarding the sustainability of a research center in a graduate school of social work.
