The use of remote desktop applications has increased greatly in recent years, mainly because of the generalization of telecommuting due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This process has been carried out in a very controlled manner in some companies, but in other organizations it has been introduced in a more anarchic way. The direct use of on-premises company computers and resources from the internet without the necessary protection mechanisms, including VPNs, has increased the risk of data exfiltration. Apart from other types of data exfiltration, there are cases in which employees transfer files using encrypted communications, consciously or unconsciously, producing a leak of information undetected by data loss prevention systems. In this paper we analyse the question of whether a forensic investigation may answer questions about data exfiltrations; questions such as those regarding the when, what and who (or to whom) and the use of application logs and other available tools. The answers to these questions may form the basis of solid digital evidence for legal purposes, though they may only deliver a partial response to said questions. Other complementary sources are necessary to build a complete answer and accurate digital evidence. Nevertheless, we have identified and analysed several use cases that may help to raise an early alarm that can offer warning about certain behaviours in encrypted traffic that may be detected via network monitoring. VIDEO game consoles ,TELECOMMUTING ,QUALITY of service ,CLOUD computing ,COMPARATIVE studies ,MOBILE computing - Abstract
A cloud-based interactive application (CIA) is an application running in the cloud with stringent interactivity requirements, such as remote desktop and cloud gaming. These services have experienced a surge in usage, primarily due to the adoption of new remote work practices during the pandemic and the emergence of entertainment schemes similar to cloud gaming platforms. Evaluating the quality of experience (QoE) in these applications requires specific metrics, including interactivity time, responsiveness, and the assessment of video- and audio-quality degradation. Despite existing studies that evaluate QoE and compare features of general cloud applications, systematic research into QoE for CIAs is lacking. Previous surveys often narrow their focus, overlooking a comprehensive assessment. They touch on QoE in broader contexts but fall short in detailed metric analysis. Some emphasise areas like mobile cloud computing, omitting CIA-specific nuances. This paper offers a comprehensive survey of QoE measurement techniques in CIAs, providing a taxonomy of input metrics, strategies, and evaluation architectures. State-of-the-art proposals are assessed, enabling a comparative analysis of their strengths and weaknesses and identifying future research directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, there has been a notable surge in the utilization of remote desktop services, largely driven by the emergence of new remote work models introduced during the pandemic. These services cater to interactive cloud-based applications (CIAs), whose core functionality operates in the cloud, demanding strict end-user interactivity requirements. This boom has led to a significant increase in their deployment, accompanied by a corresponding increase in associated maintenance costs. Service administrators aim to guarantee a satisfactory Quality of Experience (QoE) by monitoring metrics like interactivity time, particularly in cloud environments where variables such as network performance and shared resources come into play. This paper analyses anomaly detection state of the art and proposes a novel system for detecting interactivity time anomalies in cloud-based remote desktop environments. We employ an automatic model based on LSTM neural networks that achieves an accuracy of up to 99.97%.

IMAGE transmission , *VISUAL perception , *ALGORITHMS , *VIDEO compression - Abstract
This paper developed a progressive hierarchical algorithm combining image texture complexity and wavelet coefficient characteristics to meet the requirements of remote desktop environment. Firstly, the algorithm allocated bits for each image block according to texture complexity in order to improve the utilization of target bit budget. Then, it optimized the hierarchical structure of high-frequency detail components in the progressive hierarchical algorithm by analyzing the order of the importance of different subbands features in the image block. And it also designed a progressive hierarchical algorithm that added subbands transmission layer by layer based on the wavelet coefficient characteristics. Finally, according to the allocated bits and the selected layering method, the paper implemented a codec system for progressive transmission of each image block. Simulation experiments show that the proposed progressive transmission algorithm can reconstruct better images in different image transmission environments, and is more in line with the visual perception characteristics of the human eye. The algorithm is more adaptive to weak networks and performs better in the field of desktop remote video image transmission and processing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Remote Desktop Software (RDS) enables the controlling of a computer system without the need for physical access. Operations are sent to the remote machine and executed as if performed by a local user. With an unprecedented shift to remote working due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, more people are working on home devices without enterprise IT support and therefore reliant upon this software to collaborate and keep their systems available and secure. RDS complicates a Forensic Investigation as any person with remote access privileges or knowledge of bypassing them could be responsible for an action. Despite its importance and prevalence, forensic research into RDS is minimal. As a market-leading solution for Windows, TeamViewer is an impactful starting point to demonstrate that such software is forensically-valuable to explore. This paper shows that with suitable evidence, an Investigator can identify which machines have performed remote control or been controlled, transferred files and have been remotely rebooted, among other events. We also highlight a potential privacy concern due to inadequate uninstallation processes. To illustrate the value of our findings we publish a Python module for Autopsy that automatically locates, processes and visualises key TeamViewer artefacts for an Investigator. MEASUREMENT errors ,TIME measurements ,COST control ,USER experience - Abstract
The growing trend of desktop virtualisation has facilitated the reduction of management costs associated with traditional systems and access to services from devices with different capabilities. However, desktop virtualisation requires controlling the interactivity provided by an infrastructure and the quality of experience perceived by users. This paper proposes a methodology for the quantification of interactivity based on the measurement of the time elapsed between user interactions and the associated responses. Measurement error is controlled using a novel mechanism for the detection of screen changes, which can lead to erroneous measurements. Finally, a campus virtual desktop infrastructure and the Amazon WorkSpaces solution are analysed using this proposed methodology. The results demonstrate the importance of the location of virtualisation infrastructure and the types of protocols used by remote desktop services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research aims to develop interactive PLC learning media based on virtual learning. The interactive PLC learning media uses a 3D simulator design to simulate the application of PLC in the industry, so it looks like real and makes students more interested in learning PLC This study uses experimental methods. The 3D simulation software is Factory I/O developed by Real Games. It enables us to build a conveyor virtual plant and to bring it into the classroom. The automatic controller used to control the virtual plant is the PLC Siemens S7-1200 with Tia Portal software. The PLC is connected to the computer server through an ethernet network via TCP/IP protocol. With the rapid development of current internet technology, PLC learning can be done in virtual learning. This PLC learning media can be run remotely through the internet with team viewer program so that PLC learning is not only done on campus but can be done anywhere. From the results of research that has been done, the user can create PLC programs remotely to control conveyor virtual plant on a computer server through an internet network without having to install the program on their computers. This paper describes a solution for the remote teaching of courses and laboratory work in the COVID-19 pandemic. This project implemented several communication solutions so that students have access, from home, to applications running on computers in the laboratory, to the workstations there and can see what happens during the experiments. For this, communication solutions based on VPN (Virtual Private Network) tunneling, gateway based port forwarding or proxy servers were used. In order for the students to see what was happening in the laboratory, during the experiments, a group of surveillance cameras mounted next to each work stand was used. Communication with them was designed to allow more participants to attend these laboratory experiments, regardless of where they connect to the network. To create the system, a server computer was used that runs the LINUX operating system, the paper presenting the practical solutions needed to configure the applications that provide all these services. This system is used, starting with the autumn of 2020 within the department of which the authors are part, to teach an appreciable number of disciplines that require the realization of practical works on computers and laboratory stands. - Abstract
Remote desktop solutions have widespread adoption across the world, allowing people to connect to a computer remotely from anywhere in the world. One widely used solution is TigerVNC which uses the RFB protocol for communication between a client and server. TigerVNC supports several encoding types, which use different techniques to compress image data. Currently, there is a lack of a performance evaluation frameworks for VNC software that makes it possible to measure the performance of not only different encoders, but also the performance of the system that chooses which encoding to use for different parts of the image. This thesis presents a framework that was developed to evaluate the performance of TigerVNC server in real-world scenarios. The framework includes a tool that records an X session losslessly and a benchmarking suite that processes a recorded session, providing data regarding execution time and compression ratio. Benchmarks were run using several encoding settings with different recorded sessions representing real-world scenarios. Results show that TigerVNC server has a good tradeoff between compression ratio and execution time. The work done in this thesis lays a foundation on which future research can be done, leading to improvements in the TigerVNC project.

The advanced technology of smart glasses enables health professionals to video stream their operations to remote supporters for collaboration and cooperation. This study monitored the clinical situation by using smart glasses for remote cooperative training via video streaming and clinical decision-making through simulation based on a scenario of emergency nursing care for patients with arrhythmia.Participants and Methods: The clinical operations of bedside trainees, who is Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2(Glass EE2) wearers, were live streamed via their Google Glasses, which were viewed at a remote site by remote supporters via a desktop computer. Data were obtained from 31 nursing students using eight essay questions regarding their experience as desktop-side remote supporters. Results: Most of the participants reported feeling uneasy about identifying clinical situations (84%), patients’ condition (72%), and trainees’ performance (69%). The current system demonstrated sufficient performance with a satisfactory level of image quality and auditory communication, while network and connectivity are areas that require further improvement. The reported barriers to identifying situations on the remote desktop were predominantly a narrow field of view and motion blur in videos captured by Glass EE2s, and using the customized mirror mode. Conclusion: The current commercial Glass EE2 can facilitate enriched communication between remotely located supporters and trainees by sharing live videos and audio during clinical operations. Further improvement of hardware and software user interfaces will ensure better applicability of smart glasses and video streaming functions to clinical practice settings. Keywords: smart glass, google glass engerprise edition 2, remote support, cooperation, interaction, health professional

Nowadays, remote desktop technologies are widely used to control remote computers. In this context, more and more Desktop as a Service (DaaS) solutions that allow users to directly control Virtual Machines through HTML5 web applications are emerging. However, currently, DaaS is at an early stage because several issues have to be addressed. In this paper, we aim to provide software architects a 360-degree study on the major web-based remote desktop client systems for the development of next generation DaaS solutions in both OpenStack-based private and public Clouds. In particular, we compare and test different native and customized web-based remote desktop solutions, specifically focusing on audio and video redirection performances in both Cloud environments. Exhaustive experiments highlight, from an objective point of view, the behavior of different DaaS solutions, providing useful hints to software architects and developers. Remote administration and remote implementation are the main uses of remote desktop systems. Although they were first designed to computers, nowadays they are also desired for mobile systems, like Android, for example. There are several approaches to remotely control Android devices. However, they require special permissions and/or software installation to perform remote actions. Here we present "Remote Resources": a new tool for remote control of Android gadgets. Unlike other solutions, it is not necessary any pre-configuration or installation of additional applications in the device before using our tool. "Remote Resources" is an open-source platform that enables real time communication with Android smartphones and tablets all over the world. It can be used in several contexts, especially for development support, testing at laboratories and videoconferences when you cannot have the hardware in your hands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Users with disabilities interact with Personal Computers (PCs) using Assistive Technology (AT) software solutions. Such applications run on a PC that a person with a disability commonly uses. However the configuration of AT applications is not trivial at all, especially whenever the user needs to work on a PC that does not allow him/her to rely on his / her AT tools (e.g., at work, at university, in an Internet point). In this paper, we discuss how cloud computing provides a valid technological solution to enhance such a scenario. With the emergence of cloud computing, many applications are executed on top of virtual machines (VMs). Virtualization allows us to achieve a software implementation of a real computer able to execute a standard operating system and any kind of application. In this paper we propose to build personalized VMs running AT programs and settings. By using the remote desktop technology, our solution enables users to control their customized virtual desktop environment by means of an HTML5-based web interface running on any computer equipped with a browser, whenever they are. Whether due to illness, weather, safety, or other concerns, it is very difficult for biology students to gather meaningful and timely data without access to campus. This has been especially evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, in which most laboratory exercises have been conducted as a simulation. Simulated experiments provide a stopgap for certain courses, but for upper-level and research courses, they are often insufficient. Many new microscopy tools now on the market can be adapted to allow students to generate and analyze novel data with little aid from instructors. Remote brightfield-based systems like the CytoSMART Lux2 can be used to gather real-time insight into the progression of cell growth, cell migration, and cell viability over time. The data from these systems can be viewed via the Internet or downloaded for later analysis. Confocal microscopy also offers unique remote-learning opportunities. Because these fluorescence-based microscopes are controlled almost exclusively by a computer, free “remote desktop” software can allow students to learn how to use this cutting-edge technology and can also allow for the generation and analysis of novel data. While these systems can be expensive, they offer a variety of benefits for undergraduate students and researchers, whether they are in the laboratory or working remotely.

- Abstract
Assistive Technology (AT) provides essential computer accessibility for people with disabilities. In this paper, we examine how Cloud computing can provide adaptive user interfaces to people with disabilities in order to enable them accessing AT tools in form of Software as a Service (SaaS). The proposed solution consists in creating adaptive user interfaces deploying AT tools in Virtual Machines (VMs) which users can manage through the Internet. By using an HTML5-based web interface, computer users with disabilities are able to interact with personalized virtual desktops from any networked computer by means of a web browser without having to setup additional software on the physical machine. Nevertheless, using AT software in web-accessed VMs is not so easy as well as in physical Desktops, because several issues have to be overcome. In order to address such issues, we discuss an architecture integrating Guacamole, i.e., an HTML5 remote desktop gateway, Virtual Network Computing (VNC), i.e., a technology to control a remote Desktop, Virtual Box, i.e., a virtual machine monitor (or hyper visor), and CLEVER a Virtual Infrastructure Manager (VIM) middleware. - Abstract
In spite of rapid improvements in network bandwidth and costs, conventional remote desktop services are still not suitable for high-end graphical applications such as CAD software. Complexity of graphical images with multiple vectors and frequent updates of the large parts of the display make it difficult to provide remote desktop service with the visually permissible quality for engineering tasks. In this paper, we present the gRemote Virtual Environment Computingh (RVEC). RVEC combines movie compression and still-image loss less compression algorithm to reduce drastically the bandwidth of the image transmission without deteriorating visual quality below an acceptable engineering standard. Furthermore, RVEC uses a novel loss less compression algorithm, referred to as the graphics compression to compress the still image of a graphical application. The graphics compression makes use of vector features in the display image, thereby achieving the better compression ratio without a negative effect on the compression speed. We give detailed comparison of RVEC against a variety of existing technologies, including VNC, RDP, and RGS. We demonstrate that RVEC can provide up to five times faster response than existing technologies while reducing the bandwidth to roughly one-tenth. RVEC enables a practical remote desktop service of high-end graphical applications, leading to a next generation manufacturing environment, referred to as the gENGINEERING CLOUDh. The ENIGNEERINGCLOUD can provide ubiquitous access to a wide range of engineering applications from a cloud data center. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

While a remote computing solution such as VNC is an effective technology for PC users to access a remote computer, it is not as effective while being used from smartphones. In this paper, we propose techniques to improve remote computing from smartphones that help deliver near-PC level experience to users. We introduce a key building block called smart-macros that have the robustness of application macros but at the same time possess the generality of raw macros. Using smart-macros we design and prototype SmartVNC, a remote computing solution for smartphones. We show using experimental studies and a trace based analysis of real user activity, that SmartVNC can improve user experience considerably. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In many places, desktop as a service under the Windows environment has been provided using Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH). A number of studies have been conducted on analysis of sole performance of RDP or hypervisor performance, and few studies have been conducted on performance analysis when a number of RDSH are running. The performance analysis of RDSH published by Microsoft is not suitable to estimate the acceptable number of users in servers running in the current use environment where videos are frequently used because RDSH employ the models that exclude video-related tasks. This study aims to analyze the performance including video playback scenarios in the RDSH environment and estimate the acceptable number of servers through the performance analysis results.

SUMMARY T-Learning makes it possible to deliver educational content to home TVs. TV operators, which manage huge populations of devices such as set-top-boxes (STBs) in user homes, are considering t-Learning as an interesting option for expanding the service they offer. However, typical STB hardware configurations are limited in terms of satisfying operator needs and do not easily support all types of applications or content. In this work, we consider graphic < e-Adventure > educational games, which are not directly executable on typical STBs. To cover this gap and guarantee an enjoyable user experience, we present an architecture based on a combination of streaming and remote desktop protocols that relies on virtualized servers deployed in a cloud computing infrastructure. It features an original image-encoding signalling mechanism that identifies multimedia content in educational games and permits seamless protocol switching at the client side. This architecture is a complete technological solution to virtualize heavy educational games and execute them smoothly on STB light clients over Internet Protocol Television networks. We present performance results that show that our proposal is an efficient scalable solution to deliver t-Learning to home environments. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. ACCESS to information , *INFORMATION sharing , *INFORMATION retrieval - Abstract
Data about individuals and organizations are routinely collected across the Member States of Europe, through surveys, administrative and business transactions. Yet access to these microdata for research purposes, particularly across national borders, is often restricted for confidentiality or legal reasons. Despite the benefits that accrue to society from allowing comparative research to be undertaken using cross-national data sources, such as policy evaluation, researchers face significant barriers in making comparative analyses of data collected in more than one Member State. Legal restrictions on the dissemination and transfer of data, and the consequential cost of visiting the data within its country of origin, prohibit access. We present a new initiative to build a European Remote Access Network, as part of the Data without Boundaries programme, which arguably represents one of the greatest efforts of recent years to allow researchers from across the European Union to access data collected in more than one country.
