Ultrasound is a hand-held, low-cost, non-invasive medical imaging modality which plays a vital role in diagnosing various diseases. Despite this, many rural and remote communities do not have access to ultrasound scans due to the lack of local experts trained to perform them. To address this challenge, we built a mixed reality and haptics-based tele-ultrasound system to enable an expert to precisely guide a novice remotely in carrying out an ultrasound exam. The precision and flexibility of our solution makes it more practical than existing tele-ultrasound solutions. We tested the system in Skidegate on the islands of Haida Gwaii, BC, Canada, with the experts positioned 754 km away at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. We performed 11 scans with 10 novices and 2 experts. The experts were tasked with acquiring 5 target images and measurements in the epigastric region. The novices of various backgrounds and ages were all inexperienced in mixed reality and were not required to have prior ultrasound experience. The captured images were evaluated by two radiologists who were not present for the tests. These results are discussed along with new insights into the human computer interaction in such a system. We show that human teleoperation is feasible and can achieve high performance for completing remote ultrasound procedures, even at a large distance and with completely novice followers., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, submitted to IEEE VR 2025

Ultrasound, because of its low cost, non-ionizing, and non-invasive characteristics, has established itself as a cornerstone radiological examination. Research on ultrasound applications has also expanded, especially with image analysis with machine learning. However, ultrasound data are frequently restricted to closed data sets, with only a few openly available. Despite being a frequently examined organ, the kidney lacks a publicly available ultrasonography data set. The proposed Open Kidney Ultrasound Data Set is the first publicly available set of kidney brightness mode (B-mode) ultrasound data that includes annotations for multi-class semantic segmentation. It is based on data retrospectively collected in a 5-year period from over 500 patients with a mean age of 53.2 +/- 14.7 years, body mass index of 27.0 +/- 5.4 kg/m2, and most common primary diseases being diabetes mellitus, immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy, and hypertension. There are labels for the view and fine-grained manual annotations from two expert sonographers. Notably, this data includes native and transplanted kidneys. Initial bench-marking measurements are performed, demonstrating a state-of-the-art algorithm achieving a Dice Sorenson Coefficient of 0.85 for the kidney capsule. This data set is a high-quality data set, including two sets of expert annotations, with a larger breadth of images than previously available. Modelling ultrasound speckle has generated considerable interest for its ability to characterize tissue properties. As speckle is dependent on the underlying tissue architecture, modelling it may aid in tasks like segmentation or disease detection. However, for the transplanted kidney where ultrasound is commonly used to investigate dysfunction, it is currently unknown which statistical distribution best characterises such speckle. This is especially true for the regions of the transplanted kidney: the cortex, the medulla and the central echogenic complex. Furthermore, it is unclear how these distributions vary by patient variables such as age, sex, body mass index, primary disease, or donor type. These traits may influence speckle modelling given their influence on kidney anatomy. We are the first to investigate these two aims. N=821 kidney transplant recipient B-mode images were automatically segmented into the cortex, medulla, and central echogenic complex using a neural network. Seven distinct probability distributions were fitted to each region. The Rayleigh and Nakagami distributions had model parameters that differed significantly between the three regions (p <= 0.05). While both had excellent goodness of fit, the Nakagami had higher Kullbeck-Leibler divergence. Recipient age correlated weakly with scale in the cortex (Omega: rho = 0.11, p = 0.004), while body mass index correlated weakly with shape in the medulla (m: rho = 0.08, p = 0.04). Neither sex, primary disease, nor donor type demonstrated any correlation. We propose the Nakagami distribution be used to characterize transplanted kidneys regionally independent of disease etiology and most patient characteristics based on our findings., Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables

Findings include: (1) In 2015-16, of the 7,164 Title IV institutions in the United States and other U.S. jurisdictions, 3,085 were classified as 4-year institutions, 2,081 were 2-year institutions, and the remaining 1,998 were less-than-2-year institutions (table 1); (2) Average tuition and required fees for full-time, first-time degree/certificate-seeking undergraduates at public and nonprofit 4-year institutions increased from 2013-14 to 2015-16, while tuition and required fees decreased at for-profit 4-year institutions over the same period (table 2). After adjusting for inflation, public institutions reported a roughly 4 percent increase for in-state students (to about $8,100) and for out-of-state students (to approximately $18,300). Nonprofit institutions also reported around a 4 percent increase (to about $26,400). For-profit institutions reported average tuition and required fees of approximately $16,000 for 2015-16, which represents a decrease of less than 1 percent when compared with the inflation-adjusted figure from 2013-14; (3) Of the roughly 3.2 million students receiving degrees at 4-year Title IV institutions, nearly 59 percent received a bachelor's degree (table 3). This percentage varied by control of institution, with about 65 percent of the 1.8 million students at public institutions receiving a bachelor's degree, roughly 53 percent of the 1.0 million students at nonprofit institutions receiving a bachelor's degree, and about 40 percent of the 326,000 students at for-profit institutions receiving a bachelor's degree; and (4) Institutions reported a 12-month unduplicated headcount enrollment totaling about 27.4 million individual students (table 4). This report describes the universe, methods, and editing procedures used in the 2011-12 Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) data collection. IPEDS data consist of basic statistics on postsecondary institutions regarding tuition and fees, number and types of degrees and certificates conferred, number of students enrolled, number of employees, financial statistics, graduation rates, and student financial aid. Institutions submit these data during three reporting periods corresponding to fall 2011, winter 2011-12, and spring 2012. Information provided in this report is applicable to the full 2011-12 IPEDS collection year; response rates and specific information on data collected during a particular collection period are included in the "First Look" report specific to that collection period.
