Throughout this article we argue that collectivity and soul inform the work of the expert teachers who we refer to as Jazz Pedagogues. Jazz's complicated history, like teaching, calls for a consideration of the painful, the messy, the beautiful, and the healing. We, a team of university researchers and classroom teachers, examine the ways jazz can serve as one way to understand how Black-centric, anti-racist English teachers draw on their pedagogical prowess to skillfully engage with students with love, care, and a clear focus on justice. Informed by Black Feminist and Black Studies theories, we analyze a jam session/kitchen table talk between Jazz Pedagogues and theorize towards a framework for Jazz Pedagogy.

Students often view their role as that of a replicator, rather than a creator, of mathematical arguments. We aimed to engage our students more fully in the creation process, helping them to see themselves as legitimate proof creators. In this paper, we describe an instructional activity (i.e., the "group proof activity") that is purposefully designed to support students' development as creative provers. We demonstrate how one group's attempt at constructing a group proof allowed the group members to build on one another's individual ideas to improve their strategies for proving and to address important misconceptions in their original work. The case highlights how the group proof activity supports a classroom environment where student ideas drive the discussion while also allowing for important mathematical ideas related to proof to become the central focus of a group's learning.

The field of mathematics teacher education has been moving collectively toward a common goal of preparing prospective mathematics teachers to teach with technology. In this article, we present findings from a national survey of accredited university secondary mathematics teacher education programs. The purpose of the study is to describe the current state of the ways in which programs are preparing preservice teachers to teach secondary mathematics with technology.

If the goal is to move beyond the shape of the graph to consider the dynamic aspects of functions, students need to explore dynamic representations of functions. To address this, the authors combined the use of a dynamic representation of function with the instructional routine, Which One Doesn't Belong? [WODB]. In this article, they briefly introduce the WODB routine and the dynamic representation of function that they use, dynagraphs (for more information on dynagraphs, see Edwards and Nickell 2014). Then, they share their dynamic WODB task along with examples of ways in which their students engaged with it. The intent is for readers to consider how dynamic representations situated within WODB can extend students' exploration and recognition of the dynamic characteristics of functions.

Objective: The study was conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of mild internal jugular (IJV) compression via an FDA approved compression collar for symptomatic treatment of venous pulsatile tinnitus. Methods: This is a prospective study that recruited 20 adult patients with venous pulsatile tinnitus. Participants completed the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), were fitted with the collar, and rated symptom intensity on a 10‐point tinnitus intensity scale before and during collar use. Once weekly for 4 weeks, they answered a survey quantifying days used, average tinnitus intensity before and after wearing the collar each day of use, and any safety concerns. Lastly, they completed an exit interview. The primary outcome was symptomatic relief, with secondary outcomes of safety, effect of treatment setting, effect of time, and quality of life assessed via nonparametric testing. Results: 18 participants completed the study, and 276 paired daily before use/during use intensity scores were submitted. The median symptom intensity without the collar was 6 (IQR 4, 7), whereas with the collar it was 3 (IQR 2, 5), for a median symptomatic relief of 50%. The collar had a significant effect in reducing symptom intensity (p < 0.0001) and burden of illness via the THI (p < 0.0001). There was no effect of setting, frequency, or time on symptomatic relief with the collar. There were no adverse safety events reported aside from minor discomfort upon initial application. Conclusions: Venous compression collars offer acute symptom relief for patients with venous pulsatile tinnitus. Further study is needed to assess safety and efficacy of longitudinal use. Ungulates place immense consumptive pressure on forest vegetation globally, leaving legacies of reduced biodiversity and simplified vegetative structure. However, what remains unresolved is whether browse‐induced changes occurring early in succession ultimately manifest themselves in the developed forest canopy. Understanding the development and persistence of these legacies is critical as canopy structure is an important determinant of forest ecosystem functions such as carbon sequestration and wildlife habitat.We measured how white‐tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus browse during stand initiation affected canopy structure, tree species richness, diversity, stem density, and basal area on Pennsylvania's Allegheny Plateau using a portable canopy LiDAR system. We capitalized on an historic deer enclosure experiment where forests were subjected to four deer densities (4, 8, 15, and 25 deer/km2) for 10 years following stand initiation.Deer browsing impacts on the forest canopy are apparent nearly four decades since stand initiation. The highest deer density treatment experienced a significant reduction in tree species diversity, density, and basal area with stands becoming dominated by black cherry Prunus serotina. Reductions in overstorey diversity and tree density resulted in a more open canopy with low leaf area and high horizontal leaf variability. Canopies were tallest at the lowest and highest deer densities.Synthesis and applications. Using a portable canopy LiDAR system and a former deer enclosure experiment, we show that high deer browsing pressure during stand initiation can have a decades‐long impact on stand and canopy structure. High deer densities led to stands with lower species diversity and tree density, which resulted in canopies that were taller and less dense. As remote sensing of the canopy becomes more prevalent, considering the legacy of ungulate herbivory on canopy structure may inform both land management and our understanding of ecological function, such as forest carbon sequestration, maintenance of diverse understory communities, and creation of wildlife habitat [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
