We present a void clustering analysis in configuration-space using the completed Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV) extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) DR16 samples. These samples consist of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRG) combined with the high redshift tail of the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) DR12 CMASS galaxies (called as LRG+CMASS sample), Emission Line Galaxies (ELG) and quasars (QSO). We build void catalogues from the three eBOSS DR16 samples using a ZOBOV-based algorithm, providing 2,814 voids, 1,801 voids and 4,347 voids in the LRG+CMASS, ELG and QSO samples, respectively, spanning the redshift range $0.6, Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures. Within the $\Lambda$CDM model, measurements from recent Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and weak lensing (WL) surveys have uncovered a $\sim 3\sigma$ disagreement in the inferred value of the parameter $S_8 \equiv \sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_m/0.3}$, quantifying the amplitude of late-time matter fluctuations. Before questioning whether the $S_8$ discrepancy calls for new physics, it is important to assess the view of measurements other than CMB and WL ones on the discrepancy. Here, we examine the role of measurements of the growth rate $f(z)$ in arbitrating the $S_8$ discrepancy, considering measurements of $f\sigma_8(z)$ from Redshift-Space Distortions (RSD). Our baseline analysis combines RSD measurements with geometrical measurements from Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Type Ia Supernovae (SNeIa), given the key role of the latter in constraining $\Omega_m$. From this combination and within the $\Lambda$CDM model we find $S_8 = 0.762^{+0.030}_{-0.025}$, and quantify the agreement between RSD+BAO+SNeIa and \textit{Planck} to be at the $2.2\sigma$ level: the mild disagreement is therefore compatible with a statistical fluctuation. We discuss combinations of RSD measurements with other datasets, including the $E_G$ statistic. This combination increases the discrepancy with \textit{Planck}, but we deem it significantly less robust. Our earlier results are stable against an extension where we allow the dark energy equation of state $w$ to vary. We conclude that, from the point of view of combined growth rate and geometrical measurements, there are hints, but no strong evidence yet, for the \textit{Planck} $\Lambda$CDM cosmology over-predicting the amplitude of matter fluctuations at redshifts $z \lesssim 1$. We present improved modelling of the redshift-space distortions of galaxy clustering that arise from peculiar velocities. We create mock galaxy catalogues in the framework of the halo model, using data from the Bolshoi project. These mock galaxy populations are inserted into the haloes with additional degrees of freedom that govern spatial and kinematical biases of the galaxy populations relative to the dark matter. We explore this generalised halo model with an MCMC algorithm, comparing the predictions to data from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, and thus derive one of the first constraints on the detailed kinematic degrees of freedom for satellite galaxies within haloes. With this approach, the distortions of the redshift-space galaxy autocorrelations can be accounted for down to spatial separations close to 10 kpc, opening the prospect of improved RSD measurements of the perturbation growth rate by the inclusion of data from nonlinear scales., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, final published version with only minor text changes for clarifications

We assess the performance of the multipole expansion formalism in the case of single-dish HI intensity mapping, including instrumental and foreground removal effects. This formalism is used to provide MCMC forecasts for a range of HI and cosmological parameters, including redshift space distortions and the Alcock-Paczynski effect. We first determine the range of validity of our power spectrum modelling by fitting to simulation data, concentrating on the monopole, quadrupole, and hexadecapole contributions. We then show that foreground subtraction effects can lead to severe biases in the determination of cosmological parameters, in particular the parameters relating to the transverse BAO rescaling, the growth rate and the HI bias ($\alpha_\perp$, $\overline{T}_\text{HI} f\sigma_8$, and $\overline{T}_\text{HI} b_\text{HI} \sigma_8$, respectively). We attempt to account for these biases by constructing a 2-parameter foreground modelling prescription, and find that our prescription leads to unbiased parameter estimation at the expense of increasing the estimated uncertainties on cosmological parameters. In addition, we confirm that instrumental and foreground removal effects significantly impact the theoretical covariance matrix, and cause the covariance between different multipoles to become non-negligible. The bispectrum can quantify the non-Gussianity present in the redshifted 21-cm signal produced by the neutral hydrogen (HI) during the epoch of reionization (EoR). Motivated by this, we perform a comprehensive study of the EoR 21-cm bispectrum using simulated signals. Given a model of reionization, we demonstrate the behaviour of the bispectrum for all unique triangles in $k$ space. For ease of identification of the unique triangles, we parametrize the $k$-triangle space with two parameters, namely the ratio of the two arms of the triangle ($n=k_2/k_1$) and the cosine of the angle between them ($\cos{\theta}$). Furthermore, for the first time, we quantify the impact of the redshift space distortions (RSD) on the spherically averaged EoR 21-cm bispectrum in the entire unique triangle space. We find that the real space signal bispectra for small and intermediate $k_1$-triangles ($k_1 \leq 0.6 \,{\rm Mpc^{-1}}$) is negative in most of the unique triangle space. It takes a positive sign for squeezed, stretched and linear $k_1$-triangles, specifically for large $k_1$ values ($k_1 \geq 0.6 \,{\rm Mpc^{-1}}$). The RSD affects both the sign and magnitude of the bispectra significantly. It changes (increases/decreases) the magnitude of the bispectra by $50-100\%$ without changing its sign (mostly) during the entire period of the EoR for small and intermediate $k_1$-triangles. For larger $k_1$-triangles, RSD affects the magnitude by $100-200\%$ and also flips the sign from negative to positive. Euclid Consortium: N. Hamaus et al., Euclid is poised to survey galaxies across a cosmological volume of unprecedented size, providing observations of more than a billion objects distributed over a third of the full sky. Approximately 20 million of these galaxies will have their spectroscopy available, allowing us to map the three-dimensional large-scale structure of the Universe in great detail. This paper investigates prospects for the detection of cosmic voids therein and the unique benefit they provide for cosmological studies. In particular, we study the imprints of dynamic (redshift-space) and geometric (Alcock–Paczynski) distortions of average void shapes and their constraining power on the growth of structure and cosmological distance ratios. To this end, we made use of the Flagship mock catalog, a state-of-the-art simulation of the data expected to be observed with Euclid. We arranged the data into four adjacent redshift bins, each of which contains about 11 000 voids and we estimated the stacked void-galaxy cross-correlation function in every bin. Fitting a linear-theory model to the data, we obtained constraints on f/b and DMH, where f is the linear growth rate of density fluctuations, b the galaxy bias, DM the comoving angular diameter distance, and H the Hubble rate. In addition, we marginalized over two nuisance parameters included in our model to account for unknown systematic effects in the analysis. With this approach, Euclid will be able to reach a relative precision of about 4% on measurements of f/b and 0.5% on DMH in each redshift bin. Better modeling or calibration of the nuisance parameters may further increase this precision to 1% and 0.4%, respectively. Our results show that the exploitation of cosmic voids in Euclid will provide competitive constraints on cosmology even as a stand-alone probe. Aims. We investigate the importance of lensing magnification for estimates of galaxy clustering and its cross-correlation with shear for the photometric sample of Euclid. Using updated specifications, we study the impact of lensing magnification on the constraints and the shift in the estimation of the best fitting cosmological parameters that we expect if this effect is neglected., Methods. We follow the prescriptions of the official Euclid Fisher matrix forecast for the photometric galaxy clustering analysis and the combination of photometric clustering and cosmic shear. The slope of the luminosity function (local count slope), which regulates the amplitude of the lensing magnification, and the galaxy bias have been estimated from the Euclid Flagship simulation., Results. We find that magnification significantly affects both the best-fit estimation of cosmological parameters and the constraints in the galaxy clustering analysis of the photometric sample. In particular, including magnification in the analysis reduces the 1 sigma errors on Omega(m,0), w(0), w(a) at the level of 20-35%, depending on how well we will be able to independently measure the local count slope. In addition, we find that neglecting magnification in the clustering analysis leads to shifts of up to 1.6 sigma in the best-fit parameters. In the joint analysis of galaxy clustering, cosmic shear, and galaxy-galaxy lensing, magnification does not improve precision, but it leads to an up to 6 sigma bias if neglected. Therefore, for all models considered in this work, magnification has to be included in the analysis of galaxy clustering and its cross-correlation with the shear signal (3 x 2pt analysis) for an accurate parameter estimation.

We present a new model for the cross-covariance between galaxy redshift-space distortions and peculiar velocities. We combine this with the auto-covariance models of both probes in a fully self-consistent, maximum-likelihood method, allowing us to extract enhanced cosmological parameter constraints. When applying our method to the 6-degree Field Galaxy Survey (6dFGS), our constraint on the growth rate of structure is $f\sigma_8 = 0.384 \pm 0.052 \rm{(stat)} \pm 0.061 \rm{(sys)}$ and our constraint for the redshift-space distortion parameter is $\beta = 0.289^{+0.044}_{-0.043} \rm{(stat)} \pm 0.049 \rm{(sys)}$. We find that the statistical uncertainty for the growth rate of structure is reduced by 64% when using the complete covariance model compared to the redshift-space distortion auto-covariance model and 50% when compared to using the peculiar velocity auto-covariance model. Our constraints are consistent with those from the literature on combining multiple tracers of large-scale structure, as well as those from other 6dFGS analyses. The current cosmological model tells us that the Universe began very homogeneous, and matter slowly started clumping to make up stars, galaxies, clusters of galaxies, and the large scale structure that we see. The rate with which these structures were formed is very dependent on the theory that describes gravity. Measuring the multipoles of the power spectrum in redshift space we can probe this growth-rate, and thus constrain alternative models of gravity. In this work we review techniques to accurately measure the multipoles of the power spectrum, and to maximize the amount of information contained in these quantities. We also do a careful treatment of systematical effects, reviewing techniques to forward model these effects into the theoretical model for the power-spectrum multipoles. Combining these techniques, we were able to develop a pipeline capable of taking raw galaxy positions and turning them into unbiased cosmological parameters; furthermore, we have extensively tested it, and applied it to obtain constraints with data from the VIPERS survey. We have also done complementary work on understanding the noise in numerical simulations of the large scale structure. In particular, we have studied techniques to reduce the noise in statistics derived from numerical simulations, and were the first to give a detailed explanation of the process through which the fixing and pairing technique works to reduce the variance in n-point functions. O modelo cosmológico atual diz que o universo teria começado numa distribuição extremamente homogênea de matéria, que lentamente iria se aglomerando e formando as estrelas, galáxias, aglomerados de galáxias, e a estrutura em larga escala que vemos. A taxa com a qual estas estruturas crescem está intimamente ligada à teoria que rege a gravidade. Através de medições dos multipolos do espectro de potências, é possível medir esta taxa de crescimento, e com isso excluir possíveis modelos de gravitação. Neste trabalho, revisamos técnicas para medir o espectro de potências de forma acurada, e para maximizar a informação contida nestas medições. Ademais, damos um tratamento cuidadoso aos erros sistemáticos, revisando técnicas pelas quais podemos incorporar os efeitos destes erros no modelo teórico do espectro de potências, de forma a reproduzir as observações reais. Combinando estes conhecimentos, foi possível desenvolver um programa computacional capaz de tomar medições das posições de galáxias no céu, e transformá-las em vínculos nos parâmetros cosmológicos; ademais, este programa foi extensivamente testado, e utilizado para vincular parâmetros usando dados reais do levantamento de galáxias VIPERS. Além disso, este trabalho também versa sobre uma área altamente complementar, na qual buscamos compreender o ruído presente em simulações cosmológicas da estrutura em larga escala. Em particular, estudamos técnicas pelas quais é possível reduzir este ruído, e fomos os primeiros a dar uma descrição detalhada do processo pelo qual a técnica \\textit{fixing and pairing} reduz a variância em funções de n-pontos.

The 21-cm signal from the Cosmic Dawn (CD) is likely to contain large fluctuations, with the most extreme astrophysical models on the verge of being ruled out by observations from radio interferometers. It is therefore vital that we understand not only the astrophysical processes governing this signal, but also other inherent processes impacting the signal itself, and in particular line-of-sight effects. Using our suite of fully numerical radiative transfer simulations, we investigate the impact on the redshifted 21-cm from the CD from one of these processes, namely the redshift-space distortions (RSDs). When RSDs are added, the resulting boost to the power spectra makes the signal more detectable for our models at all redshifts, further strengthening hopes that a power spectra measurement of the CD will be possible. RSDs lead to anisotropy in the signal at the beginning and end of the CD, but not while X-ray heating is underway. The inclusion of RSDs, however, decreases detectability of the non-Gaussianity of fluctuations from inhomogeneous X-ray heating measured by the skewness and kurtosis. On the other hand, mock observations created from all our simulations that include telescope noise corresponding to 1000 h observation with the Square Kilometre Array telescope show that we may be able image the CD for all heating models considered and suggest RSDs dramatically boost fluctuations coming from the inhomogeneous Ly-$\alpha$ background., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

We investigate the Minimal Theory of Massive Gravity (MTMG) in the light of different observational data sets which are in tension within the $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. In particular, we analyze MTMG model, for the first time, with the Planck-CMB data, and how these precise measurements affect the free parameters of the theory. The MTMG model can affect the CMB power spectrum at large angular scales and cause a suppression on the amplitude of the matter power spectrum. We find that on adding Planck-CMB data, the graviton has a small, positive, but non-zero mass at 68\% confidence level, and from this perspective, we show that the tension between redshift space distortions measurements and Planck-CMB data in the parametric space $S_8 - \Omega_m$ can be resolved within the MTMG scenario. Through a robust and accurate analysis, we find that the $H_0$ tension between the CMB and the local distance ladder measurements still remains but can be reduced to $\sim3.5\sigma$ within the MTMG theory. The MTMG is very well consistent with the CMB observations, and undoubtedly, it can serve as a viable candidate amongst other modified gravity theories., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. We investigate clustering properties of dark matter halos and galaxies to search for optimal statistics and scales where possible departures from general relativity (GR) could be found. We use large N-body cosmological simulations to perform measurements based on the two-point correlation function (2PCF) in GR and in selected modified gravity (MG) structure formation scenarios. As a test-bed, we employ two popular beyond-GR models: $f(R)$ gravity and the normal branch of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (nDGP) braneworld. We study a range of simulated halo and galaxy populations and reveal a noticeable MG signal in the monopole and quadrupole moments of the redshift-space 2PCF, and in the so-called clustering wedges. However, once expressed in terms of the linear distortion parameter, $\beta$, the statistical significance of these signals largely diminishes due to a strong degeneracy between MG-enhanced clustering and modified tracer bias. To circumvent this, we consider statistics less dependent on the bias: relative clustering ratios. We generalize the monopole ratio proposed in earlier work to multipole moments and clustering wedges, and introduce a new estimator of the $\beta$ parameter. The clustering ratios we extract foster noticeable differences between MG and GR models, reaching a maximum deviation of 10\% at 2$\sigma$ significance for specific variants of $f(R)$ and nDGP. We show that such departures could be measured for $\beta$ if non-linear effects at intermediate scales are correctly modeled. Our study indicates that the clustering ratios give great promise to search for signatures of MG in the large-scale structure. To investigate whether $f(R)$ gravity can relieve current $H_0$ and $\sigma_8$ tensions, we constrain the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity with Planck-2018 cosmic microwave background and redshift space distortions observations. We find that this model fails to relieve both $H_0$ and $\sigma_8$ tensions, and that its two typical parameters $\log_{10}f_{R0}$ and $n$ are insensitive to other cosmological parameters. Combining the cosmic microwave background, baryon acoustic oscillations, Type Ia supernovae, cosmic chronometers with redshift space distortions observations, we give our best constraint $\log_{10}f_{R0}, Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. Alam, S., et al., Cosmological growth can be measured in the redshift space clustering of galaxies targeted by spectroscopic surveys. Accurate prediction of clustering of galaxies will require understanding galaxy physics, which is a very hard and highly non-linear problem. Approximate models of redshift space distortion (RSD) take a perturbative approach to solve the evolution of dark matter and galaxies in the universe. In this paper, we focus on extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic (eBOSS) emission line galaxies (ELGs) that live in intermediate mass haloes. We create a series of mock catalogues using haloes from the Multidark and outer rim dark matter only N-body simulations. Our mock catalogues include various effects inspired by baryonic physics such as assembly bias and the characteristics of satellite galaxies kinematics, dynamics, and statistics deviating from dark matter particles. We analyse these mocks using the TNS RSD model in Fourier space and the convolution Lagrangian perturbation theory (CLPT) in configuration space. We conclude that these two RSD models provide an unbiased measurement of RSD within the statistical error of our mocks. We obtain the conservative theoretical systematic uncertainty of $3.3{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$, $1.8{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$, and $1.5{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ in fσ8, α∥, and α⊥, respectively, for the TNS and CLPT models. We note that the estimated theoretical systematic error is an order of magnitude smaller than the statistical error of the eBOSS ELG sample and hence are negligible for the purpose of the current eBOSS ELG analysis., SA and JAP are supported by the European Research Council through the COSFORM Research Grant (#670193). We present a self-consistent Bayesian formalism to sample the primordial density fields compatible with a set of dark matter density tracers after cosmic evolution observed in redshift space. Previous works on density reconstruction did not self-consistently consider redshift space distortions or included an additional iterative distortion correction step. We present here the analytic solution of coherent flows within a Hamiltonian Monte Carlo posterior sampling of the primordial density field. We test our method within the Zel'dovich approximation, presenting also an analytic solution including tidal fields and spherical collapse on small scales using augmented Lagrangian perturbation theory. Our resulting reconstructed fields are isotropic and their power spectra are unbiased compared to the true one defined by our mock observations. Novel algorithmic implementations are introduced regarding the mass assignment kernels when defining the dark matter density field and optimization of the time step in the Hamiltonian equations of motions. Our algorithm, dubbed barcode, promises to be specially suited for analysis of the dark matter cosmic web down to scales of a few Megaparsecs. This large scale structure is implied by the observed spatial distribution of galaxy clusters --- such as obtained from X-ray, SZ or weak lensing surveys --- as well as that of the intergalactic medium sampled by the Lyman alpha forest or perhaps even by deep hydrogen intensity mapping. In these cases, virialized motions are negligible, and the tracers cannot be modeled as point-like objects. International audience; The three-point correlation function (3PCF) of the 21-cm brightness temperature from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) probes complementary information to the commonly studied two-point correlation function (2PCF) about the morphology of ionized regions. We investigate the 21-cm 2PCF and 3PCF in configuration space using seminumerical simulations and test whether they can be described by the local quadratic bias model. We find that fits of bias model predictions for the 2PCF and 3PCF deviate from our measurements by |${\sim } 20{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| at scales above the typical size of ionized regions (≃ 30 Mpc) and at early times with global neutral fractions of |$\langle x_{\rm H\, \small {I}} \rangle \gtrsim 0.7$|⁠. At later times and smaller scales, these deviations increase strongly, indicating a break-down of the bias model. The 2PCF and 3PCF fits of the linear bias parameter agree at the |$10{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| level for different EoR model configurations. This agreement holds, when adding redshift space distortions to the simulations. The relation between spatial fluctuations in the matter density and the 21-cm signal, as predicted by the bias model, is consistent with direct measurements of this relation in simulations for large smoothing scales (≳30 Mpc). From this latter test, we conclude that negative amplitudes of the 21-cm 3PCF result from negative bias parameters, which describe the anticorrelation between the matter over-densities and the 21-cm signal during the EoR. However, a more detailed interpretation of the bias parameters may require a description of non-local contributions to the bias model.

Measurements of redshift space distortions (RSD) provide a means to test models of gravity on large-scales. We use mock galaxy catalogues constructed from large N-body simulations of standard and modified gravity models to measure galaxy clustering in redshift space. We focus our attention on two of the most representative and popular families of modified gravity models: the Hu \& Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity and the normal branch of the DGP model. The galaxy catalogues are built using a halo occupation distribution (HOD) prescription with the HOD parameters in the modified gravity models tuned to match with the number density and the real-space clustering of {\sc boss-cmass} galaxies. We employ two approaches to model RSD: the first is based on linear perturbation theory and the second models non-linear effects on small-scales by assuming standard gravity and including biasing and RSD effects. We measure the monopole to real-space correlation function ratio, the quadrupole to monopole ratio, clustering wedges and multipoles of the correlation function and use these statistics to find the constraints on the distortion parameter, $\beta$. We find that the linear model fails to reproduce the N-body simulation results and the true value of $\beta$ on scales $s < 40\Mpch$, while the non-linear modelling of RSD recovers the value of $\beta$ on the scales of interest for all models. RSD on large scales ($s\gtrsim20$-$40\Mpch$) have been found to show significant deviations from the prediction of standard gravity in the DGP models. Redshift space distortions within voids provide a unique method to test for environmental dependence of the growth rate of structures in low density regions, where effects of modified gravity theories might be important. We derive a linear theory model for the redshift space void-galaxy correlation that is valid at all pair separations, including deep within the void, and use this to obtain expressions for the monopole $\xi^s_0$ and quadrupole $\xi^s_2$ contributions. Our derivation highlights terms that have previously been neglected but are important within the void interior. As a result our model differs from previous works and predicts new physical effects, including a change in the sign of the quadrupole term within the void radius. We show how the model can be generalised to include a velocity dispersion. We compare our model predictions to measurements of the correlation function using mock void and galaxy catalogues modelled after the BOSS CMASS galaxy sample using the Big MultiDark $N$-body simulation, and show that the linear model with dispersion provides an excellent fit to the data at all scales, $0\leq s\leq120\;h^{-1}$Mpc. While the RSD model matches simulations, the linear bias approximation does not hold within voids, and care is needed in fitting for the growth rate. We show that fits to the redshift space correlation recover the growth rate $f(z=0.52)$ to a precision of $2.7\%$ using the simulation volume of $(2.5\;h^{-1}\mathrm{Gpc})^3$., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures. v3: updated to match version published in MNRAS. An important aspect of large-scale structure data analysis is the presence of non-negligible theoretical uncertainties, which become increasingly important on small scales. We show how to incorporate these uncertainties in realistic power spectrum likelihoods by an appropriate change of the fitting model and the covariance matrix. The inclusion of the theoretical error has several advantages over the standard practice of using the sharp momentum cut $k_{\rm max}$. First, the theoretical error covariance gradually suppresses the information from the short scales as the employed theoretical model becomes less reliable. This allows one to avoid laborious measurements of $k_{\rm max}$, which is an essential part of the standard methods. Second, the theoretical error likelihood gives unbiased constrains with reliable error bars that are not artificially shrunk due to over-fitting. In realistic settings, the theoretical error likelihood yields essentially the same parameter constraints as the standard analysis with an appropriately selected $k_{\rm max}$, thereby effectively optimizing the choice of $k_{\rm max}$. We demonstrate these points using the large-volume N-body data for the clustering of matter and galaxies in real and redshift space. In passing, we validate the effective field theory description of the redshift space distortions and show that the use of the one-parameter phenomenological Gaussian damping model for fingers-of-God causes significant biases in parameter recovery., 41+11 pages, 17+4 figures, 5+5 tables; v2: Appendix C added, practical realization of our approach clarified, matched version accepted by Phys. We perform a general test of the $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$ and $w {\rm CDM}$ cosmological models by comparing constraints on the geometry of the expansion history to those on the growth of structure. Specifically, we split the total matter energy density, $\Omega_M$, and (for $w {\rm CDM}$) dark energy equation of state, $w$, into two parameters each: one that captures the geometry, and another that captures the growth. We constrain our split models using current cosmological data, including type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions, gravitational lensing, and cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. We focus on two tasks: (i) constraining deviations from the standard model, captured by the parameters $\Delta\Omega_M \equiv \Omega_M^{\rm grow}-\Omega_M^{\rm geom}$ and $\Delta w \equiv w^{\rm grow}-w^{\rm geom}$, and (ii) investigating whether the $S_8$ tension between the CMB and weak lensing can be translated into a tension between geometry and growth, i.e. $\Delta\Omega_M \neq 0$, $\Delta w \neq 0$. In both the split $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$ and $w {\rm CDM}$ cases, our results from combining all data are consistent with $\Delta\Omega_M = 0$ and $\Delta w = 0$. If we omit BAO/RSD data and constrain the split $w {\rm CDM}$ cosmology, we find the data prefers $\Delta w0$ at $4.2\sigma$ evidence. We also find that for both CMB and weak lensing, $\Delta\Omega_M$ and $S_8$ are correlated, with CMB showing a slightly stronger correlation. The general broadening of the contours in our extended model does alleviate the $S_8$ tension, but the allowed nonzero values of $\Delta\Omega_M$ do not encompass the $S_8$ values that would point toward a mismatch between geometry and growth as the origin of the tension., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures. Accurate modelling of redshift-space distortions (RSD) is challenging in the non-linear regime for two-point statistics e.g. the two-point correlation function (2PCF). We take a different perspective to split the galaxy density field according to the local density, and cross-correlate those densities with the entire galaxy field. Using mock galaxies, we demonstrate that combining a series of cross-correlation functions (CCFs) offers improvements over the 2PCF as follows: 1. The distribution of peculiar velocities in each split density is nearly Gaussian. This allows the Gaussian streaming model for RSD to perform accurately within the statistical errors of a ($1.5\,h^{-1}$Gpc)$^3$ volume for almost all scales and all split densities. 2. The PDF of the density field at small scales is non-Gaussian, but the CCFs of split densities capture the non-Gaussianity, leading to improved cosmological constraints over the 2PCF. We can obtain unbiased constraints on the growth parameter $f\sigma_{12}$ at the per-cent level, and Alcock-Paczynski (AP) parameters at the sub-per-cent level with the minimal scale of $15\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$. This is a $\sim$30 per cent and $\sim$6 times improvement over the 2PCF, respectively. The diverse and steep slopes of the CCFs at small scales are likely to be responsible for the improved constraints of AP parameters. 3. Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) are contained in all CCFs of split densities. Including BAO scales helps to break the degeneracy between the line-of-sight and transverse AP parameters, allowing independent constraints on them. Inferring line-of-sight distances from redshifts in and around galaxy clusters is complicated by peculiar velocities, a phenomenon known as the "Fingers of God" (FoG). This presents a significant challenge for finding filaments in large observational data sets as these artificial elongations can be wrongly identified as cosmic web filaments by extraction algorithms. Upcoming targeted wide-field spectroscopic surveys of galaxy clusters and their infall regions such as the WEAVE Wide-Field Cluster Survey motivate our investigation of the impact of FoG on finding filaments connected to clusters. Using zoom-in resimulations of 324 massive galaxy clusters and their outskirts from The ThreeHundred project, we test methods typically applied to large-scale spectroscopic data sets. This paper describes our investigation of whether a statistical compression of the FoG of cluster centres and galaxy groups can lead to correct filament extractions in the cluster outskirts. We find that within 5 R200 (~15 Mpc/h) statistically correcting for FoG elongations of virialized regions does not achieve reliable filament networks compared to reference filament networks based on true positions. This is due to the complex flowing motions of galaxies towards filaments in addition to the cluster infall, which overwhelm the signal of the filaments relative to the volume we probe. While information from spectroscopic redshifts is still important to isolate the cluster regions, and thereby reduce background and foreground interlopers, we expect future spectroscopic surveys of galaxy cluster outskirts to rely on 2D positions of galaxies to extract cosmic filaments., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

DES Collaboration: et al., The DES-CMASS sample (DMASS) is designed to optimally combine the weak lensing measurements from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and redshift-space distortions (RSD) probed by the CMASS galaxy sample from the Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of adopting DMASS as the equivalent of CMASS for a joint analysis of DES and BOSS in the framework of modified gravity. We utilize the angular clustering of the DMASS galaxies, cosmic shear of the DES METACALIBRATION sources, and cross-correlation of the two as data vectors. By jointly fitting the combination of the data with the RSD measurements from the CMASS sample and Planck data, we obtain the constraints on modified gravity parameters μ0=−0.37+0.47−0.45 and Σ0=0.078+0.078−0.082⁠. Our constraints of modified gravity with DMASS are tighter than those with the DES Year 1 REDMAGIC sample with the same external data sets by 29 per cent for μ0 and 21 per cent for Σ0, and comparable to the published results of the DES Year 1 modified gravity analysis despite this work using fewer external data sets. This improvement is mainly because the galaxy bias parameter is shared and more tightly constrained by both CMASS and DMASS, effectively breaking the degeneracy between the galaxy bias and other cosmological parameters. Such an approach to optimally combine photometric and spectroscopic surveys using a photometric sample equivalent to a spectroscopic sample can be applied to combining future surveys having a limited overlap such as DESI and LSST., AC acknowledges support from NASA grant no. 15-WFIRST15-0008. A late end to reionisation at redshift $z\simeq 5.3$ is consistent with observed spatial variations in the Ly$\alpha$ forest transmission and the deficit of Ly$\alpha$ emitting galaxies around extended Ly$\alpha$ absorption troughs at $z=5.5$. In this model, large islands of neutral hydrogen should persist in the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) until $z\simeq 6$. We use a novel, hybrid approach that combines high resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations with radiative transfer to predict the incidence of strong 21 cm forest absorbers with optical depths $\tau_{21}>10^{-2}$ from the diffuse IGM in these late reionisation models. We include the effect of redshift space distortions on the simulated 21 cm forest spectra, and treat the highly uncertain heating of the pre-reionisation IGM by soft X-rays as a free parameter. For a model with only modest IGM pre-heating, such that average gas kinetic temperatures in the diffuse IGM remain below $T_{\rm K}\simeq 10^{2} \rm\, K$, we find that strong 21 cm forest absorption lines should persist until $z=6$. For a sample of $\sim 10$ sufficiently radio loud background sources, a null-detection of 21 cm forest absorbers at $z\simeq 6$ with SKA1-low or possibly LOFAR should provide an informative lower limit on the still largely unconstrained soft X-ray background at high redshift and the temperature of the pre-reionisation IGM., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables. We present a study of the 21-cm signal bispectrum (which quantifies the non-Gaussianity in the signal) from the Cosmic Dawn (CD). For our analysis, we have simulated the 21-cm signal using radiative transfer code GRIZZLY, while considering two types of sources (mini-QSOs and HMXBs) for Ly$\alpha$ coupling and the X-ray heating of the IGM. Using this simulated signal, we have, for the first time, estimated the CD 21-cm bispectra for all unique $k$-triangles and for a range of $k$ modes. We observe that the redshift evolution of the bispectra magnitude and sign follow a generic trend for both source models. However, the redshifts at which the bispectra magnitude reach their maximum and minimum values and show their sign reversal depends on the source model. When the Ly$\alpha$ coupling and the X-ray heating of the IGM occur simultaneously, we observe two consecutive sign reversals in the bispectra for small $k$-triangles (irrespective of the source models). One arising at the beginning of the IGM heating and the other at the end of Ly$\alpha$ coupling saturation. This feature can be used in principle to constrain the CD history and/or to identify the specific CD scenarios. We also quantify the impact of the spin temperature ($T_{\rm S}$) fluctuations on the bispectra. We find that $T_{\rm S}$ fluctuations have maximum impact on the bispectra magnitude for small $k$-triangles and at the stage when Ly$\alpha$ coupling reaches saturation. Furthermore, we are also the first to quantify the impact of redshift space distortions (RSD), on the CD bispectra. We find that the impact of RSD on the CD 21-cm bispectra is significant ($> 20\%$) and the level depends on the stages of the CD and the $k$-triangles for which the bispectra are being estimated., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. The combination of two- and three-point clustering statistics of galaxies and the underlying matter distribution has the potential to break degeneracies between cosmological parameters and nuisance parameters and can lead to significantly tighter constraints on parameters describing the composition of the Universe and the dynamics of inflation. Here we investigate the relation between biases in the estimated parameters and inaccurate modelling of non-linear redshift-space distortions for the power spectrum and bispectrum of projected galaxy density fields and lensing convergence. Non-linear redshift-space distortions are one of the leading systematic uncertainties in galaxy clustering. Projections along the line of sight suppress radial modes and are thus allowing a trade-off between biases due to non-linear redshift-space distortions and statistical uncertainties. We investigate this bias-error trade-off for a CMASS-like survey with a varying number of redshift bins. Improved modelling of the non-linear redshift-space distortions allows the recovery of more radial information when controlling for biases. Not modelling non-linear redshift space distortions inflates error bars for almost all parameters by 20%. The information loss for the amplitude of local non-Gaussianities is smaller, since it is best constrained from large scales. In addition, we show empirically that one can recover more than 99% of the 3D power spectrum information if the depth of the tomographic bins is reduced to 10 $h^{-1}$Mpc., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables

We develop a series of N-body data challenges, functional to the final analysis of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) Data Release 16 (DR16) galaxy sample. The challenges are primarily based on high-fidelity catalogues constructed from the Outer Rim simulation - a large box size realization (3h-1Gpc) characterized by an unprecedented combination of volume and mass resolution, down to 1.85 × 109h-1M. We generate synthetic galaxy mocks by populating Outer Rim haloes with a variety of halo occupation distribution (HOD) schemes of increasing complexity, spanning different redshift intervals. We then assess the performance of three complementary redshift space distortion (RSD) models in configuration and Fourier space, adopted for the analysis of the complete DR16 eBOSS sample of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs). We find all the methods mutually consistent, with comparable systematic errors on the Alcock-Paczynski parameters and the growth of structure, and robust to different HOD prescriptions - thus validating the robustness of the models and the pipelines used for the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and full shape clustering analysis. In particular, all the techniques are able to recover α and α to within $0.9{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$, and fσ8 to within $1.5{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. As a by-product of our work, we are also able to gain interesting insights on the galaxy-halo connection. Our study is relevant for the final eBOSS DR16 'consensus cosmology', as the systematic error budget is informed by testing the results of analyses against these high-resolution mocks. We perform a multi-tracer analysis using the complete Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV) extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) DR16 luminous red galaxy (LRG) and the DR16 emission line galaxy (ELG) samples in the configuration space, and successfully detect a cross correlation between the two samples, and find the growth rate to be $f\sigma_8=0.342 \pm 0.085$ ($\sim25$ per cent accuracy) from the cross sample alone. We perform a joint measurement of the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) and redshift space distortion (RSD) parameters at a single effective redshift of $z_{\rm eff}= 0.77$, using the auto- and cross-correlation functions of the LRG and ELG samples, and find that the comoving angular diameter distance $D_M(z_{\rm eff})/r_d = 18.85\pm 0.38$, the Hubble distance $D_H(z_{\rm eff})/r_d = 19.64 \pm 0.57$, and $f\sigma_8(z_{\rm eff}) = 0.432 \pm 0.038$, which is consistent with a $\Lambda$CDM model at $68\%$ CL. Compared to the single-tracer analysis on the LRG sample, the Figure of Merit (FoM) of $\alpha_{\perp}, \alpha_{||}$ and $f\sigma_8$ is improved by a factor of $1.11$ in our multi-tracer analysis, and in particular, the statistical uncertainty of $f\sigma_8$ is reduced by $11.6 \%$., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables; MNRAS accepted; The BAO and RSD measurements and the covariance matrix are made available at https://github.com/ytcosmo/MultiTracerBAORSD/

Future high spectroscopic resolution galaxy surveys will observe galaxies with nearly full-sky footprints. Modeling the galaxy clustering for these surveys, therefore, must include the wide-angle effect with narrow redshift binning. In particular, when the redshift-bin size is comparable to the typical peculiar velocity field, the nonlinear redshift-space distortion (RSD) effect becomes important. A naive projection of the Fourier-space RSD model to spherical harmonic space leads to diverging expressions. In this paper we present a general formalism of projecting the higher-order RSD terms into spherical harmonic space. We show that the nonlinear RSD effect, including the fingers-of-God (FoG), can be entirely attributed to a modification of the radial window function. We find that while linear RSD enhances the harmonic-space power spectrum, unlike the three-dimensional case, the enhancement decreases on small angular-scales. The fingers-of-God suppress the angular power spectrum on all transverse scales if the bin size is smaller than $\Delta r \lesssim \pi \sigma_u$; for example, the radial bin sizes corresponding to a spectral resolution $R=\lambda/\Delta \lambda$ of a few hundred satisfy the condition. Intensity mapping (IM) with neutral hydrogen is a promising avenue to probe the large scale structure of the Universe. In this paper, we demonstrate that using the 64-dish MeerKAT radio telescope as a connected interferometer, it is possible to make a statistical detection of HI in the post-reionization Universe. With the MIGHTEE (MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration) survey project observing in the L-band ($856 < ��< 1712$ MHz, $z < 0.66$), we can achieve the required sensitivity to measure the HI IM power spectrum on quasi-linear scales, which will provide an important complementarity to the single-dish IM MeerKAT observations. We present a purpose-built simulation pipeline that emulates the MIGHTEE observations and forecast the constraints that can be achieved on the HI power spectrum at $z = 0.27$ for $k > 0.3$ $\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ using the foreground avoidance method. We present the power spectrum estimates with the current simulation on the COSMOS field that includes contributions from HI, noise and point source models constructed from the observed MIGHTEE data. The results from our \textit{visibility} based pipeline are in qualitative agreement to the already available MIGHTEE data. This paper demonstrates that MeerKAT can achieve very high sensitivity to detect HI with the full MIGHTEE survey on quasi-linear scales (signal-to-noise ratio $> 7$ at $k=0.49$ $\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$) which are instrumental in probing cosmological quantities such as the spectral index of fluctuation, constraints on warm dark matter, the quasi-linear redshift space distortions and the measurement of the HI content of the Universe up to $z\sim 0.5$., 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The peculiar velocities of biased tracers of the cosmic density field contain important information about the growth of large scale structure and generate anisotropy in the observed clustering of galaxies. Using N-body data, we show that velocity expansions for halo redshift-space power spectra are converged at the percent-level at perturbative scales for most line-of-sight angles $\mu$ when the first three pairwise velocity moments are included, and that the third moment is well-approximated by a counterterm-like contribution. We compute these pairwise-velocity statistics in Fourier space using both Eulerian and Lagrangian one-loop perturbation theory using a cubic bias scheme and a complete set of counterterms and stochastic contributions. We compare the models and show that our models fit both real-space velocity statistics and redshift-space power spectra for both halos and a mock sample of galaxies at sub-percent level on perturbative scales using consistent sets of parameters, making them appealing choices for the upcoming era of spectroscopic, peculiar-velocity and kSZ surveys., Comment: 63 pages, 11 figures, updated to match version accepted by JCAP

Fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies can be used to predict the intrinsic size of galaxies and has a number of plausible application to study cosmology and galaxy physics. We present a detailed analysis of the fundamental plane of the SDSS-III BOSS LOWZ and CMASS galaxies. For the standard fundamental plane, we find a strong redshift evolution for the mean residual and show that it is primarily driven by the redshift evolution of the surface brightness of the galaxies. After correcting for the redshift evolution, the FP residuals are strongly correlated with the galaxy properties and some observational systematics. We show that the variations in the FP between the central and satellite galaxies, that have been observed in the literature, can primarily be explained by the correlation of the FP with the galaxy luminosity. We also measure the cross correlations of the FP residuals with the galaxy density field. The amplitude of the cross correlations depends on the galaxy properties and environment with brighter and redder galaxies showing stronger correlation. In general, galaxies in denser environments (higher galaxy bias ) show stronger correlations. We also compare FP amplitude with the amplitudes of intrinsic alignments of galaxy shapes (IA), finding the two to be correlated. Finally, using the FP residuals we also study the impact of intrinsic alignments on the constraint of growth rate using redshift space distortions. We do not observe any significant trends in measurements of the growth rate $f$ as function of the amplitude of FP-density correlations, resulting in null detection of the effects of IA on the RSD measurements., 28 pages, 17+ figures. Peculiar-velocity surveys of the low-redshift universe have significant leverage to constrain the growth rate of cosmic structure and test gravity. Wide-field imaging surveys combined with multi-object spectrographs (e.g. ZTF2, LSST, DESI, 4MOST) can use Type Ia supernovae as informative tracers of the velocity field, reaching few percent constraints on the growth rate $f\sigma_8$ at $z\lesssim0.2$ where density tracers cannot do better than $\sim10\%$. Combining the high-redshift DESI survey mapping redshift space distortions with a low-redshift supernova peculiar velocity survey using LSST and DESI can determine the gravitational growth index to $\sigma(\gamma)\approx0.02$, testing general relativity. The key probes of the growth of large-scale structure are its rate $f$ and amplitude $\sigma_8$. Redshift space distortions in the galaxy power spectrum allow us to measure only the combination $f\sigma_8$, which can be used to constrain the standard cosmological model or alternatives. By using measurements of the galaxy-galaxy lensing cross-correlation spectrum or of the galaxy bispectrum, it is possible to break the $f\sigma_8$ degeneracy and obtain separate estimates of $f$ and $\sigma_8$ from the same galaxy sample. Currently there are only a handful of such separate measurements, but even this allows for improved constraints on cosmological models. We explore how having a larger and more precise sample of such measurements in the future could constrain further cosmological models. We consider what can be achieved by a future nominal sample that delivers a $\sim 1\%$ constraint on $f$ and $\sigma_8$ separately, compared to the case with a similar precision on the combination $f\sigma_8$. For the six cosmological parameters of $\Lambda$CDM, we find improvements of $\sim\! 5$--$50\%$ on their constraints. For modified gravity models in the Horndeski class, the improvements on these standard parameters are $\sim\! 0$--$15\%$. Galaxy redshift surveys are one of the key probes in modern cosmology. In the data analysis of galaxy surveys, the precision of the statistical measurement is primarily limited by the cosmic variance on large scales. Fortunately, this limitation can in principle be evaded by observing multiple types of biased tracers. In this brief review, we present the idea of the multi-tracer method, outline key steps in the data analysis, and show several worked examples based on the GAMA, BOSS and eBOSS galaxy surveys., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. Inflation predicts that the Universe is spatially flat. The Planck 2018 measurements of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy favour a spatially closed universe at more than 2$\sigma$ confidence level. We use model independent methods to study the issue of cosmic curvature. The method reconstructs the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ from cosmic chronometers data with the Gaussian process method. The distance modulus is then calculated with the reconstructed function $H(z)$ and fitted by type Ia supernovae data. Combining the cosmic chronometers and type Ia supernovae data, we obtain $\Omega_{k0}h^2=0.102\pm 0.066$ which is consistent with a spatially flat universe at the 2$\sigma$ confidence level. By adding the redshift space distortions data to the type Ia supernovae data with a proposed novel model independent method, we obtain $\Omega_{k0}h^2=0.117^{+0.058}_{-0.045}$ and no deviation from $\Lambda$CDM model is found., Comment: 6 figures, 1 table, MNRAS in press

Redshift-space distortions (RSD) in galaxy redshift surveys generally break both the isotropy and homogeneity of galaxy distribution. While the former aspect is particularly highlighted as a probe of growth of structure induced by gravity, the latter aspect, often quoted as wide-angle RSD but ignored in most of the cases, will become important and critical to account for as increasing the statistical precision in next-generation surveys. However, the impact of wide-angle RSD has been mostly studied using linear perturbation theory. In this paper, employing the Zel'dovich approximation, i.e., first-order Lagrangian perturbation theory for gravitational evolution of matter fluctuations, we present a quasi-linear treatment of wide-angle RSD, and compute the cross-correlation function. The exact nature of dark energy is currently unknown and its cosmological perturbations, when dark energy is assumed not to be the cosmological constant, are usually modeled as adiabatic. Here we explore the possibility that dark energy might have a nonadiabatic component and we examine how it would affect several key cosmological observables. We present analytical solutions for the growth rate and growth index of matter density perturbations and compare them to both numerical solutions of the fluid equations and an implementation in the Boltzmann code CLASS, finding that they all agree to well below one percent. We also perform a Monte Carlo analysis to derive constraints on the parameters of the nonadiabatic component using the latest cosmological data, including the temperature and polarization spectra of the Cosmic Microwave Background as observed by Planck, the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, the Pantheon type Ia supernovae compilation and lastly, measurements of Redshift Space Distortions (RSD) of the growth rate of matter perturbations. We find that the amplitude of the nonadiabatic pressure perturbation is consistent with zero within $1\sigma$. DESI will precisely constrain cosmic expansion and the growth of structure by collecting $\sim$35 million redshifts across $\sim$80% of cosmic history and one third of the sky to study Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Redshift Space Distortions (RSD). We present a preliminary target selection for an Emission Line Galaxy (ELG) sample, which will comprise about half of all DESI tracers. The selection consists of a $g$-band magnitude cut and a $(g-r)$ vs. $(r-z)$ color box, which we validate using HSC/PDR2 photometric redshifts and DEEP2 spectroscopy. We present the Emission Line Galaxy (ELG) sample of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV Data Release 16 (DR16). After describing the observations and redshift measurement for the 269,243 observed ELG spectra over 1170 deg$^2$, we present the large-scale structure catalogues, which are used for the cosmological analysis. These catalogues contain 173,736 reliable spectroscopic redshifts between 0.6 and 1.1, along with the associated random catalogues quantifying the extent of observations, and the appropriate weights to correct for non-cosmological fluctuations. We perform a spherically averaged baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) measurement in configuration space, with density field reconstruction: the data 2-point correlation function shows a feature consistent with that of the BAO, providing a 3.2-percent measurement of the spherically averaged BAO distance $D_V(z_{\rm eff})/r_{\rm drag} = 18.23\pm 0.58$ at the effective redshift $z_{\rm eff}=0.845$., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. The connection between galaxy star formation rate (SFR) and dark matter (DM) is of paramount importance for the extraction of cosmological information from next generation spectroscopic surveys that will target emission line star forming galaxies. Using publicly available mock galaxy catalogs obtained from various semi-analytic models (SAMs) we explore the SFR-DM connection in relation to the speed-from-light method (Feix et al. 2016) for inferring the growth rate, $f$, from luminosity/SFR shifts. Emphasis is given to the dependence of the SFR distribution on the environment density on scales of 10s-100s Mpc. We show that the application of the speed-from-light method to an Euclid-like survey is not biased by environmental effects. In all models, the precision on the measured $\beta=f/b$ parameter is $\sigma_\beta < 0.17$ at $z=1$. This translates into errors of $\sigma_f \sim 0.22$ and $\sigma_{(f\sigma_8)}\sim 0.1$, without invoking assumptions on the mass power spectrum. These errors are in the same ballpark as recent analyses of the redshift space distortions in galaxy clustering. In agreement with previous studies, the bias factor, $b$ is roughly a scale-independent, constant function of the SFR for star forming galaxies. Its value at $z=1$ ranges from $1.2$ to $1.5$ depending on the SAM recipe. Although in all SAMs denser environments host galaxies with higher stellar masses, the dependence of the SFR on the environment is more involved. In most models the SFR probability distribution is skewed to larger values in denser regions. We present the one-loop 2-point function of biased tracers in redshift space computed with Lagrangian perturbation theory, including a full resummation of both long-wavelength (infrared) displacements and associated velocities. The resulting model accurately predicts the power spectrum and correlation function of halos and mock galaxies from two different sets of N-body simulations at the percent level for quasi-linear scales, including the damping of the baryon acoustic oscillation signal due to the bulk motions of galaxies. We compare this full resummation with other, approximate, techniques including the moment expansion and Gaussian streaming model. We discuss infrared resummation in detail and compare our Lagrangian formulation with the Eulerian theory augmented by an infrared resummation based on splitting the input power spectrum into "wiggle" and "no-wiggle" components. We show that our model is able to recover unbiased cosmological parameters in mock data encompassing a volume much larger than what will be available to future galaxy surveys. We demonstrate how to efficiently compute the resulting expressions numerically, making available a fast Python code capable of rapidly computing these statistics in both configuration and Fourier space., Comment: 37 pages, 10 figures, updated to match version accepted by JCAP

The study of large-scale structure aims to describe the distribution of matter in the universe. This thesis examines two important topics in this field: intrinsic alignments and anisotropic galaxy clustering. Intrinsic alignments of galaxies are correlations between galaxy shapes and the surrounding density field and are a significant systematic uncertainty in weak gravitational lensing measurements. We examine intrinsic alignments from both theoretical and observational perspectives. First, the most commonly used model for intrinsic alignments, the tidal (linear) alignment model, is tested and developed in the context of recent measurements. The model is found to provide a reasonably accurate description of observations on large scales, particularly for luminous red galaxies. We raise unresolved issues with the model and explore several ways in which it could be improved and expanded. Second, we develop a technique to separate intrinsic alignments from galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements. This technique allows the removal of contamination from the desired lensing signal while also providing a probe of intrinsic alignments in different galaxy populations. Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we use this method to place the tightest current constraints on intrinsic alignment strength for the SDSS lensing sample, finding that it is a subdominant source of uncertainty at the current level of statistical precision.The measured galaxy clustering signal in redshift surveys is anisotropic due to both geometric and dynamic distortions. We discuss the nature of these distortions and examine their information content in the context of future redshift surveys. We employ a model for the galaxy power spectrum in redshift space, based on an expansion in velocity moments of the phase-space distribution function of matter. This model includes nonlinear treatment of matter clustering, galaxy bias, shot noise, and redshift-space distortions. Comparing with numerical simulations, we find that this model is able to describe halo clustering with sufficient accuracy to allow the inclusion of broadband information on small scales, thus significantly improving constraints on both geometry and growth of structure in the universe.
