Abstract Introduction The number of lifetime sexual partners is a critical factor in public health, influencing the transmission of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS. This study aims to explore the distribution, determinants, and geographical mapping of lifetime sexual partners among three generational cohorts in India—Generation X, Generation Y/ Millennials, and Generation Z—using data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5). Methods Data were analysed from 149,665 participants (67,352 men and 80,313 women) from the NFHS-5 (2019–2021). Participants were categorized into Generation X (born 1981–1996), Millennials (born 1997–2010), and Generation Z (born 2010–2024). The primary outcome was the total number of lifetime sexual partners, with explanatory variables including demographic, socioeconomic, health-related, and behavioural factors. Hierarchical linear regression models were employed to assess associations and generate geographical mapping across Indian states and union territories. Results The mean number of lifetime sexual partners was higher in males (3.29) compared to females (2.40), with significant regional and generational variations. Males in the North-East regions reported the highest averages, particularly among Generation X. Significant determinants included religion, caste, employment status, and health insurance. Risky behaviours, such as smoking and alcohol consumption, were positively associated with the number of sexual partners in males, while comprehensive HIV/AIDS knowledge was linked to fewer partners across genders. Conclusion This study highlights significant generational, gender, and regional disparities in sexual behaviour across India. The findings suggest the need for targeted public health interventions that address specific cultural and socioeconomic contexts, promote health awareness, and integrate sexual health education with broader efforts to reduce risky behaviours and gender-based violence. more...

There is a significant chunk of India’s population residing in poor housing quality with inadequate sanitation and hygiene, which might lead to higher anemia prevalence. The objective was to determine the association between anemia with poor housing quality among the older Indian adult population (≥45 years) as per residence. Abstract Introduction The prevalence of important public health problems like road traffic accidents (RTA) and depression are surging. This study was aimed to estimate distribution and determine the association between RTA and depression among Indian population aged 45 years and above: overall and stratified into age group, gender and across states/union territories as aspirants, achievers, and front runners. Methods Using Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI) dataset (April 2017–December 2018), we have conducted this study among middle aged (45–59 years) and older adults and elderly (≥ 60 years) Indians. Bivariate analysis was conducted to estimate the prevalence of RTA and depression nationally and across aspirants, achievers, and front runner states. States and union territories were categorised as low, medium, and high as per RTA and depression prevalence, which were further cross tabulated. Spatial distribution maps were created using Microsoft Excel. We have documented the association of RTA with depression. To reduce the confounding effects of demographic and socioeconomic; health related and behavioural covariates; propensity score matching (PSM) was conducted. Nested multilevel regression modelling was analysed using STATA version 17. Results Prevalence of RTA was 1.84% (1.74–1.94) nationally, highest among achiever states [2.04% (1.82–2.30)]. Prevalence of depression was 6.08% (5.90–6.26) nationally, highest among aspirant states [7.02% (6.74–7.30)]. The adjusted odds of having RTA was significantly among depressed [aOR (95% CI) 1.76 (1.45–2.15)] than non-depressed participants; which was much higher among females [aOR (95% CI) 1.93 (1.43–2.62)] than in males [aOR (95%CI) 1.67 (1.29–2.16)] and much higher among middle aged [aOR (95%CI) 2.08 (1.63–2.65)]. Odds of RTA was highest across front runners [aOR (95%CI) 1.86 (1.26–2.72)] followed by aspirant states [aOR (95%CI) 1.79 (1.37–2.33)]. Conclusion This study established the positive association between depression and road traffic accidents among middle aged, older adults and elderly. Therefore, efforts must be taken to address mental health issues in them with proper policy implication more focused on females and middle aged. Abstract Oral cancer is the second most prevalent cancer in India and 5% of all cancers in women is contributed by oral cancer. In spite of being a part of national programme, the screening coverage rates remain low. Studies have indicated that the societal status of women and their empowerment plays a role in screening coverage for cancer. The objective of the current study is to estimate the coverage of oral cancer screening among Indian women within reproductive age-group across Indian states and union territories (UTs), to explore the relationship of socioeconomic status (SES) and women empower status (WES) with oral cancer screening coverage across Indian states and union territories (UT). Data from the fifth round of the nationally representative cross-sectional survey (National Family Health Survey, NFHS-2019–2021) was used in the present study with 3,48,882 individuals being included in the final analysis. We have cross-tabulated SES and WES composite scores with the Dimension Index (DI) of screening and categorised states and UTs into low, middle and high. We have represented these values over the Indian map. The interaction among these was graphically represented by a bubble plot. Further, we estimated the association of each indicator of SES and WES with screening coverage using multivariable logistic regression. The national coverage of oral cancer screening among women of reproductive age was 0.77% with Andhra Pradesh (7%) and Andaman and Nicobar Islands (10%) recording the highest screening coverage. Despite having high SES and WES scores, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, the screening (DI) was low. States with both high women empowerment status and high socioeconomic status showed high oral cancer screening uptake but the trend was not universal. Still, there were variations in the association among the states. The increased screening was significantly associated with higher access to improved sanitary facility (76%) and clean fuel for cooking (44%). Socio-economic status is an important precursor for better oral cancer screening coverage but women empowerment status did not always translate into good cancer screening uptake. Deep-rooted socio-cultural constructs and stigma associated with cancer and its implications may play a role. Ayurveda is a time-tested science that systematically explains its concepts through eight branches. Grahas Chikitsa (Ayurvedic treatment of microbes) is one of these branches, and it is well-explained in the texts. “Graha” refers to a tiny, invisible living organism that may undergo several stages of development and can be pathogenic or antigenic to the body. Microorganisms can cause generalised pathogenic alterations in the body that affect multiple systems, similar to the concept of Grahas. This suggests a deeper understanding of microbes in relation to Grahas. This review paper aims to explore the age-old concept of Balgrahas (microbes) and its relevance in modern times. The review was conducted using published articles on paediatric disorders, electronic databases, textbooks on paediatrics, and traditional Ayurvedic writings related to Kauamarbhritya (Paediatrics). A distinguishing feature of this study is its compilation of information on Balgraha from classical texts, covering clinical characteristics, causal factors, and various internal and external treatments. It also discusses Ayurvedic treatment modalities such as Daiva Vyapashraya Chikitsa (Spiritual therapy) and Yukti Vyapashraya Chikitsa (Rational therapy). In this review, authors discussed several formulations for treating conditions associated with Balgraha (microbes) that have not been detailed in previous studies. Abstract Introduction The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) shows a drop in tobacco use worldwide. Despite the drop, there still continues to be a significant number of tobacco users in India. Research on tobacco use among young persons is commonly prioritised in India, while studies on tobacco use among middle-aged (45–59 years) and elderly (≥ 60 years) adults are noticeably lacking. We have conducted this study with objective to estimate the distribution, determinants and socioeconomic inequalities of smoking (SM) and smokeless tobacco (SLT) consumption across Indian states and union territories. Methods This study was based on 66,606 participants aged ≥ 45 years using Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI)-1 (2017–2018) data. Background: Vitamin D deficiency is thought to increase the likelihood of insulin resistance (IR) and diabetes onset. The objective of this study was to examine the association between the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and vitamin D levels in individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the tribal community of India. Methods: This study included 270 participants, consisting of 90 individuals with prediabetes, 90 individuals with T2DM, and 90 control patients. Anthropometric and biochemical characteristics were evaluated in all participants. 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels were measured using a chemiluminescent immunoassay. The TyG index was computed as Ln [fasting triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting glucose (mg/dL)]/2. Spearman correlation analysis and linear regression analysis were performed to assess the relationship between the TyG index and 25(OH)D levels in people diagnosed with prediabetes and T2DM. The optimum cut-off value of the TyG index for detecting vitamin D deficiency was determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results: We observed a significant reduction in vitamin D levels in individuals with prediabetes and T2DM compared to those in the control group. However, the TyG index was significantly greater in individuals with prediabetes and T2DM than in controls. Statistical analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between the TyG index and 25(OH)D in both prediabetes and T2DM. Introduction By scrutinizing the impact of job schedules, workplace culture and stress levels, our study aims to determine the prevalence of sleep disorders among various occupations and its associated factors. The findings promise to enhance the overall well-being, sleep quality and productivity in various occupational settings. Methods This is an analytical cross-sectional study involving secondary data from the nationally representative Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI Wave I 2017-18) of 35 Indian states and union territories with exception of Sikkim. The study included 59441 Indian volunteers who older than 45 years. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to study the association of sleep disorders among various occupations while accounting for other associated factors. Results Prevalence of sleep disorders was higher among the females (12.66%), unemployed (13.34%), ≥ 60-yr age group (13.45%), those who lived in rural areas (12.35%), those who were illiterate (12.80%) and reported themselves to be widowed, separated or divorced (14.54%), people with no health insurance (11.74%), smokers (12.11%), without physical activity (12.67%) and also rated themselves as poor in the self-rated health status (26.77%). Alcohol consumption was not statistically significant factor for sleep disorders. Conclusions There is an emerging need for targeted screening, prompt detection and early management of insomnia and other sleep disorders among the high-risk groups. Provision of accessible and affordable screening tools, training skills for early diagnosis at primary care level and/or proper referral services to higher centres form the cornerstone for adequate management of sleep disorders. more...

Urdhwajatrugata Vyadhi (disease of the supra clavicular region) and Indralupta {Alopecia Areata (AA)} are characterised by patchy hair loss in the area that bears hair, such as the beard and scalp. According to Sushruta Acharya, vitiated pitta and vitiated vata together cause Indralupta (AA), leading to scalp hair loss. Additionally, vitiated Rakta and Kapha obstruct the hair follicles openings, limiting the growth of new hair. In contemporary science, these conditions are related to the clinical features of AA. A five-year-old female child presented to the Department of Kaumarbhritya with complaints of hair falling out in patches on the scalp gradually over six months. In her condition, the Raktamokshana therapy by using the jalaukavcharan vidhi technique was adopted for effective results. This age-old procedure described by Acharya Sushrut in Sushrut Samhita is still beneficial in treating the above aforementioned condition. The patient experienced relief from her symptoms after eight sessions and is continuing treatment. Raktamokshana, or therapeutic bloodletting, is one of the Ayurvedic therapy methods for Raktapradoshaja Vikara. Raktamokshana (Bloodletting) through leech treatment is one of the easiest methods to administer, especially for elderly patients, female patients, paediatric patients, individuals who are extremely shy, and those with sensitive constitutions like children. It resulted in fewer complications postprocedure and reduced the risk of symptom recurrence. Neurological disorders are increasing globally due to their complex nature, influenced by genetics and environmental factors. Effective treatments remain limited, and early diagnosis is challenging. Recent evidence indicates that metabolic activities play a crucial role in the onset of neural defects. Molecular changes offer new diagnostic markers and dietary targets for disease management. Diets such as MIND, DASH, omega-3 fatty acids, and polyphenols show promise in protecting brain metabolism through their anti-inflammatory properties. Personalized dietary interventions could mitigate neurodegenerative diseases. This review highlights the effects of various dietary interventions, including calorie restriction, fasting, and ketogenic diets, on neurological disorders. Additionally, it emphasizes the nutritional impacts on immunomodulation and the underlying mechanisms, including the influence of gut microbiota on brain function. Dietary interventions could serve as adjunctive therapies in disease management. more...
