Abstract

Ceramide is well known for its skin barrier function where hydrogel is an ideal one for wound healing, on the other hand honey is used for antibacterial activity and burn wound treatment from many years ago. So our aim to develop a ceramide loaded honey based hydrogel biomaterial for burn wound healing. The biomedical hydrogel biomaterial have been prepared by solution casting method. The developed Hydrogel membranes were characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and UV- Vis Spectrophotometer. Besides that, swelling behavior in physiological solution, moisture retention capability, gel fraction, water vapor transmission rate (WVT), porosity and antimicrobial study were also evaluated. After all the hydrogel were evaluated for burn wound healing activity in mice model. Ceramide Hydrogel (C2) & Ceramide & Honey Hydrogel (CH) showed significant wound healing rate but only CH hydrogel showed significant antibacterial activity against Staphallycoccus aureus bacteria. Other physicochemical, swelling, WVT, porosity, gel fraction, weight loss, and FTIR, FESEM & UV study was very satisfactory and all experimented data strongly support the use of the hydrogel membrane as a burn wound healing.

Abstract

Background: Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases (collectively referred to as cirrhosis in this paper) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally, although the burden and underlying causes differ across locations and demographic groups. We report on results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 on the burden of cirrhosis and its trends since 1990, by cause, sex, and age, for 195 countries and territories. Methods: We used data from vital registrations, vital registration samples, and verbal autopsies to estimate mortality. We modelled prevalence of total, compensated, and decompensated cirrhosis on the basis of hospital and claims data. Disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) were calculated as the sum of years of life lost due to premature death and years lived with disability. Estimates are presented as numbers and age-standardised or age-specific rates per 100 000 population, with 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs). All estimates are presented for five causes of cirrhosis: hepatitis B, hepatitis C, alcohol-related liver disease, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and other causes. We compared mortality, prevalence, and DALY estimates with those expected according to the Socio-demographic Index (SDI) as a proxy for the development status of regions and countries. Findings: In 2017, cirrhosis caused more than 1·32 million (95% UI 1·27–1·45) deaths (440 000 [416 000–518 000; 33·3%] in females and 883 000 [838 000–967 000; 66·7%] in males) globally, compared with less than 899 000 (829 000–948 000) deaths in 1990. Deaths due to cirrhosis constituted 2·4% (2·3–2·6) of total deaths globally in 2017 compared with 1·9% (1·8–2·0) in 1990. Despite an increase in the number of deaths, the age-standardised death rate decreased from 21·0 (19·2–22·3) per 100 000 population in 1990 to 16·5 (15·8–18·1) per 100 000 population in 2017. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases (collectively referred to as cirrhosis in this paper) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally, although the burden and underlying causes differ across locations and demographic groups. We report on results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 on the burden of cirrhosis and its trends since 1990, by cause, sex, and age, for 195 countries and territories. METHODS: We used data from vital registrations, vital registration samples, and verbal autopsies to estimate mortality. We modelled prevalence of total, compensated, and decompensated cirrhosis on the basis of hospital and claims data. Disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) were calculated as the sum of years of life lost due to premature death and years lived with disability. Estimates are presented as numbers and age-standardised or age-specific rates per 100 000 population, with 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs). All estimates are presented for five causes of cirrhosis: hepatitis B, hepatitis C, alcohol-related liver disease, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and other causes. We compared mortality, prevalence, and DALY estimates with those expected according to the Socio-demographic Index (SDI) as a proxy for the development status of regions and countries. FINDINGS: In 2017, cirrhosis caused more than 1·32 million (95% UI 1·27-1·45) deaths (440 000 [416 000-518 000; 33·3%] in females and 883 000 [838 000-967 000; 66·7%] in males) globally, compared with less than 899 000 (829 000-948 000) deaths in 1990. Deaths due to cirrhosis constituted 2·4% (2·3-2·6) of total deaths globally in 2017 compared with 1·9% (1·8-2·0) in 1990. Despite an increase in the number of deaths, the age-standardised death rate decreased from 21·0 (19·2-22·3) per 100 000 population in 1990 to 16·5 (15·8-18·1) per 100 000 population in 2017. 4. Analysis of serum electrolyte and lipid profile in young Bangladeshi female with Type II Diabetes

Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most serious and common public health problems and metabolic disorder in both developed and developing countries. Diabetic patient may suffer from imbalanced electrolyte and lipid profile due to complications of diabetes mellitus and the medication they receive. Electrolytes and lipids have noteworthy roles, and changes in their concentrations provide significant signs of disease progression in a number of non-communicable diseases like diabetes. As there is a very few study of electrolyte and lipid profile in young Bangladeshi female diabetic patients, we investigated to identify the status of serum electrolytes and lipid profile with fasting blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetic female subjects with age ranging from 20 to 30. Subjects: Thirty-five female type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and 15 non-diabetic healthy control female volunteers of 20–30 age were recruited to determine serum glucose, electrolytes (Na+, K+, Cl−, and HCO3−), and lipid profiles (total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, and LDL). Result: The mean levels of electrolytes except K+ and lipid profile except HDL were found significantly higher (p < 0.001) in comparison with control group. While, there was significant (p < 0.05) decrease in the serum levels of K + and HDL in all diabetics. Conclusion: These results presented some variations from other research having different age and sex. Therefore, it can be concluded that there might have an effect of age and sex differences on lipid and electrolyte profile. This abnormal biochemical profile could be a noteworthy sign of diabetes associated disease and may have great potential as a diagnostic tool in clinical practice.

5. Assessment of pharmacological activities of two medicinal plant of Bangladesh: Launaea sarmentosa and Aegialitis rotundifolia roxb in the management of pain, pyrexia and inflammation

Abstract

Background: The current study aims at evaluating the analgesic, anti-pyretic and anti-inflammatory properties of methanolic extract of the stem, bark and leaves of Launaea sarmentosa and Aegialitis rotundifolia roxb. Results: The AELS and AEAR extract presented a significant (***p < 0.001) dose dependent increase in reaction time in writhing method and showed inhibition of 63.1% and 57.1% respectively at the doses of 400 mg/kg body weight while standard drug showed (P < 0.001) inhibition of 69.23%. In tail immersion method, AELS and AEAR showed maximum time of tail retention at 30 min in hot water i.e. 6.93 sec and 6.54 sec respectively at highest doses of 400 mg/kg body weight than lower dose while standard pentazocine showed reaction time of 7.62 sec. The AELS and AEAR extract also exhibited promising anti-inflammatory effect as demonstrated by statistically significant inhibition of paw volume by 32.48% and 26.75% respectively at the dose of 400 mg/kg body weight while the value at the dose of 200 mg/kg body weight were linear to higher dose at the 3rd hour of study. On the other hand, Standard indomethacin inhibited 40.13% of inflammation (***P < 0.001). In Cotton-pellet granuloma method, AELS and AEAR extract at the dose of 400 mg/kg body weight exhibited inhibition of inflammation of 34.7% and 29.1% respectively while standard drug showed (P < 0.001) inhibition of 63.22%. Intraperitoneal administration of AELS and AEAR showed dose dependent decrease in body temperature in brewer's yeast induced hyperthermia in rats at both doses. However, AELS significantly decreased body temperature (***p < 0.001) at 400 mg/kg compared to control. Conclusions: Present work propose that the methanolic extract of Launaea sarmentosa and Aegialitis rotundifolia roxb possesses dose dependent pharmacological action which supports its therapeutic use in folk medicine possibly mediated through the inhibition or blocking of release of prostaglandin and/or actions of vasoactive substan
