Both primary and secondary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the orbit are rare entities, though cystic SCC is even more so. It may provide a significant diagnostic conundrum to oculoplastic surgeons. We present a case of an 86 year old male with a supero-medial transilluminating cystic lesion of the orbit. There was a preceding history of a moderately differentiated SCC of the cheek, excised 3 months prior. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated no bone erosion. The cyst was excised aided by fibrin glue. This demonstrated a poorly differentiated cystic SCC with perineural infiltration. The patient elected for palliative aspirations of the cyst and is alive 12 months later. Cystic SCC of the orbit may present to a number of specialties, including maxillofacial and orbital surgeons. The present study was undertaken to identify the differences in sperm kinematics between buffalo bulls with different fertility ratings. Murrah buffalo bulls (n=9) that were routinely used for breeding purpose under progeny testing programme were utilized for the study. Bull fertility was determined based on in vivo fertility trials and the conception rates (CR) were adjusted for different non-genetic parameters. Based on the adjusted CR, bulls were classified into high, medium and low fertile group. Frozen semen samples of these bulls were obtained and sperm kinematic parameters were assessed using a computer assisted sperm analyzer. The kinematic parameters analyzed included the curvilinear velocity (VCL), the linear velocity (VSL), the average path velocity (VAP), the amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH), the linearity (LIN), the straightness coefficient (STR) and the beat cross frequency (BCF). In high fertile bulls, the proportion of motile spermatozoa was higher (p<0.001) than the medium and low fertile bulls. The VAP and VCL of sperm motion were significantly higher (P<0.05) in high fertile bulls compared to either medium or low fertile bulls. The VSL was significantly lower in low fertile bulls (P<0.005) compared to either high or medium fertile bulls. Spermatozoa from high fertile bulls had significantly higher (P<0.05) BCF, STR, ALH and LIN compared to either medium or low fertile bulls. The article discusses the study that analyzes testicular biometry and initial semen quality relationship in Karan Fries (KF) crossbred bulls, that suggests possible positive relationship of scrotal circumference (SC) with initial semen quality. Based on study results, the potential of SC, testicular length (TL), testicular width (TW), testicular volume (TV) and testicular mass (TM) combination for yielding superior results for crossbred bull selection, is inferred.

The article discusses the study that assesses the effect of the use of testicular fine needle aspiration (FNA) technique on the testicular biometry and seminal characteristics of Karan Fries crossbred bulls. The study found no significant difference in scrotal circumference and testicular length prior to and after the treatment, as well as no significant change in ejaculate volume, mass activity and individual motility in bulls in pre- and post FNA period.

PurposeTo investigate the effects of tropicamide on chromatic and achromatic contrast sensitivities over the physiological range of spatial frequencies.MethodsA total of 26 healthy volunteers, with a mean age of 32 years, were examined with and without one drop of 1% tropicamide being administered 30 min previously. On each occasion, acuity and pupil diameter were recorded, and chromatic and achromatic contrast sensitivities were examined using the Sussex Grating Machine.ResultsFollowing tropicamide administration mean pupil diameter increased from 4.1 mm to 7.2 mm (P<0.001), and mean BCVA was reduced by 0.07 LogMar units (P<0.001).Achromatic contrast sensitivity was significantly reduced following tropicamide administration at 2.20 cycles per degree (cpd) (P=0.01), 3.40 cpd (P=0.01), 10 cpd (P=0.04), 17 cpd (P=0.04), and 25 cpd (P<0.01). There was no difference in contrast sensitivity at lower spatial frequencies (0.33 and 0.66 cpd). Chromatic contrast sensitivity was not significantly altered when tested along the red–green and tritan confusion axes.ConclusionsAchromatic contrast sensitivity is significantly reduced following tropicamide administration at intermediate and high spatial frequencies. AimDue to the theoretical possibility of prion transmission in applanation tonometry, many ophthalmological units in the United Kingdom now use disposable tonometer prisms. We have investigated the potential for bacterial and viral transmission from the health practitioner to the patient via disposable prisms.MethodsAll staff who perform applanation tonometry at the Sussex Eye Hospital (SEH) received a questionnaire to evaluate if the applanating face of the prism is touched during tonometry and the ease of use of the disposable prism compared to the reusable prisms that were previously used. We then cultured prisms handled by a random sample of staff members for common bacteria. Finally, we constructed a model to investigate the possibility of interpatient adenoviral transmission via disposable tonometer prisms.ResultsThe questionnaire revealed that almost 50% of the staff admit to touching the applanating face of the tonometer prism prior to applanation. Cultures of the prisms grew a range of bacteria including Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus species. The viral model suggested that adenovirus could be transmitted by applanation tonometry.ConclusionThe use of disposable prisms for applanation tonometry may reduce the risk of prion transmission but is not bacteriologically or virologically aseptic. Ductile fracture occurs due to micro-void nucleation, growth and finally coalescence into micro-crack. These micro-cracks grow in the presence of tensile stresses leading to a fracture. A ductile fracture criterion [Eng. Fracture Mech. 53 (1996) 917] developed based on the microscopic phenomena of void nucleation, growth and coalescence along with a simple criterion [ASME J. Manuf. Sci. Eng. 118 (1996) 579] based on the nature and magnitude of hydrostatic stress in the deformation zone along the plane of symmetry are used to predict the central burst in plane strain rolling. Even though the critical damage criterion is based on microscopic description, the material parameters required are available for a few steels only and their determination involves difficult metallurgical experimentation. Further comparison of the predictions of the two criteria for central burst shows that the simple criterion is conservative and hence safe for process design. Based on the finite element analysis carried out in the present work using the experimental results available in the literature [J. Mater. Process. Technol. 32 (1992) 509], a simple criterion for predicting the split-end in rolling is proposed and the same is used to study the effect of process variables on split end occurrence. Parametric study carried out in the present work reveals that the possible occurrence of central burst or split-end for a given material is higher at higher friction, low reductions, large initial thickness of the work piece and small roll radius. These observations are in confirmation with the results published earlier, which were based on the upper bound analysis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article discusses a study that estimated concentrations of glial cell line derived neutrophic factor (GDNF) in the seminal plasma of Karan Fries crossbred bulls that produce poor and good ejaculates. Topics covered include categorization of bulls as to ejaculate rejection rate (ERR) then evaluated activity, viability, motility and sperm concentration using the Haemocytometer method. Results showed that deficient secretion of GDNF by Sertoli cells suggests impaired quality of semen.

Alcoholic steatohepatitis (ASH) represents a critical stage in alcoholic liver disease (ALD), which significantly increases the risk of developing alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis. Currently, corticosteroids and alcohol abstinence remain the only available strategy to prevent or reverse ASH progression with no FDA approved drug therapy till date. Given the notable pathological similarities between ASH and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), repurposing drugs approved for MASH presents an attractive therapeutic approach to treat ASH. In this context, we evaluated the efficacy of Resmetirom, a recently approved drug for MASH, in a mouse model of ASH. Our findings demonstrate that Resmetirom, a liver-specific thyroid hormone analog, not only reduces hepatic steatosis but also markedly alleviates liver injury, oxidative stress, and inflammation associated with ASH. Purpose: To summarise the qualitative and quantitative parameters of bacterial orbital cellulitis (OC) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and explore their clinical correlations., Methods: Multi-centre retrospective study with inclusion of patients of all ages with OC who underwent MRI. Patients with isolated pre-septal cellulitis, bilateral disease and poor-quality scans were excluded. An enlargement ratio for extraocular muscles (EOMs) was calculated by dividing maximal EOM measurements from the affected side by the contralateral side., Results: Twenty MRI scans from twenty patients (Mean age: 40.8 ± 24.3 years old, M: F = 15:5) between 2011 and 2022 were analysed. Three (15.0%) cases were paediatric patients (<18 years old). All cases had both pre-septal and orbital fat involvement. The EOM were affected in nineteen cases, with the superior muscle complex (18/19, 94.7%) most commonly affected. Mean enlargement ratio (1.30, Range: 1.04-1.82) was greatest for the medial rectus on axial views on T1 and fat-suppressed contrast-enhanced T1 (FS CE T1). Optic peri-neuritis was present in eleven (55.0%) patients, whilst two (9.5%) cases had optic neuritis. A greater degree of proptosis was observed in patients with optic neuropathy and those who underwent surgical intervention compared to those without ( p  = .002 and p  = .002, respectively)., Conclusion: MRI remains an important imaging modality for evaluating complicated OC. However, qualitative features may lack accuracy and is not a reproducible means of analysis. Simple quantitative parameters, such as proptosis and EOM measurements, correlate with high-risk clinical features and may have utility in predicting clinical course.

Background/objectives: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is an inflammatory vascular disease in which prompt and accurate diagnosis is critical. The efficacy of temporal artery biopsy (TAB) is limited by 'skip' lesions and a delay in histological analysis. This first-in-man ex-vivo study aims to assess the accuracy of optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI) in diagnosing GCA., Subjects/methods: 29 TAB samples of patients with suspected GCA were submerged in 0.9% sodium chloride and an OFDI catheter was passed through the lumen to create cross-sectional images prior to histological analysis. The specimens were then preserved in formalin for histological examination. Mean intimal thickness (MIT) on OFDI was measured, and the presence of both multinucleate giant cells (MNGCs) and fragmentation of the internal elastic lamina (FIEL) was assessed and compared with histology, used as the diagnostic gold standard., Results: MIT in patients with/without histological evidence of GCA was 0.425 mm (±0.43) and 0.13 mm (±0.06) respectively compared with 0.215 mm (±0.09) and 0.135 mm (±0.07) on OFDI. MIT measured by OFDI was significantly higher in patients with histologically diagnosed arteritis compared to those without (p = 0.0195). For detecting FIEL and MNGCs, OFDI had a sensitivity of 75% and 28.6% and a specificity of 100% and 77.3% respectively. Applying diagnostic criteria of MIT > 0.20 mm, or the presence of MNGCs or FIEL, the sensitivity of detecting histological arteritis using OFDI was 91.4% and the specificity 94.1%., Conclusions: OFDI provided rapid imaging of TAB specimens achieving a diagnostic accuracy comparable to histological examination. Objectives: To analyse development of individual nontechnical skills (NTS) domains after undertaking a previously developed simulation-based training model and analyse the relationship between technical skills (TS) and NTS in ophthalmic surgery., Methods: The simulation-based training model involved a cataract surgery case complicated by intraoperative posterior capsule rupture. Cataract surgeons underwent the simulation twice, separated by a training intervention. Two blinded independent experts assessed participants' NTS using HUFOES, NOn-Technical Skills for Surgeons (NOTSS), and the OSATS global rating scale for TS. Paired t-tests assessed differences in individual NTS domains, with p < 0.05 indicating significance. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to assess the correlation between scores from each scoring system., Results: All NTS domains within HUFOES and NOTSS demonstrated statistically significant improvements secondary to the training intervention. Positive correlations were demonstrated between HUFOES and OSATS scores in the pre- and post-training simulations, r = 0.870 (p < 0.001) and r = 0.861 (p < 0.001), respectively. Positive correlations were also demonstrated between NOTSS and OSATS scores in pre- and post-training simulations, r = 0.849 (p < 0.001) and r = 0.757 (p = 0.001), respectively. Positive correlations were demonstrated between HUFOES and NOTSS scores; r = 0.979 (p < 0.001) (n = 17) and r = 0.959 (p < 0.001) for pre- and post-training simulations, respectively., Conclusion: All NTS domains contained within HUFOES and NOTSS demonstrated significant increases following the completion of the simulation-based training model. Previous research has identified intravascular platelet thrombi in regions affected by myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (MI/R) injury and neighbouring areas. However, the occurrence of arterial thrombosis in the context of MI/R injury remains unexplored. This study utilizes intravital microscopy to investigate carotid artery thrombosis during MI/R injury in rats, establishing a connection with the presence of prothrombotic cellular fibronectin containing extra domain A (CFN-EDA) protein. Additionally, the study examines samples from patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) both before and after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Levels of CFN-EDA significantly increase following MI with further elevation observed following reperfusion of the ischemic myocardium. Thrombotic events, such as thrombus formation and growth, show a significant increase, while the time to complete cessation of blood flow in the carotid artery significantly decreases following MI/R injury induced by ferric chloride. The acute infusion of purified CFN-EDA protein accelerates in-vivo thrombotic events in healthy rats and significantly enhances in-vitro adenosine diphosphate and collagen-induced platelet aggregation. Treatment with anti-CFN-EDA antibodies protected the rat against MI/R injury and significantly improved cardiac function as evidenced by increased end-systolic pressure-volume relationship slope and preload recruitable stroke work compared to control. Similarly, in a human study, plasma CFN-EDA levels were notably elevated in CAD patients undergoing CABG. Post-surgery, these levels continued to rise over time, alongside cardiac injury biomarkers such as cardiac troponin and B-type natriuretic peptide.
