Background: Alveolar bone augmentation is a complex process influenced by a multitude of factors. The materials applied in augmentation procedures must be confirmed as non-toxic, and their physicochemical properties should allow proper bone reconstruction. The specifics of oral surgical procedures require the use of regenerative biomaterials with antimicrobial properties. This study focuses on the physicochemical characteristics of chosen nanosized biomaterials, as well as their cytotoxicity and antimicrobial properties. Methods: nanosized hydroxyapatite and fluorapatite (abbreviated as nHAp and nFAp) pellets were manufactured using a microwave hydrothermal synthesis method. The impact on Candida albicans, Streptococcus mutans, and Lactobacillus rhamnosus strains activity and adherence to apatites was tested. Cytotoxic evaluation was performed based on the differentiation process of MC3T3 cells. The effectiveness of MC3T3 differentiation was confirmed by Alizarin Red staining. Results: Contact with both biomaterials caused a reduction in the mean microbial count of S. mutans and C. albicans strains, as observed. Studied biomaterials demonstrated enhanced proliferation of MC3T3 cells, with the exception of the 1:1 nFAp concentration. Conclusions: Both biomaterials enhance the proliferation of fibroblasts and limit the activity of specific oral pathogens in vitro. The research clearly demonstrates the advantage of nFAp over nHAp, with a notable reduction in microbial count of Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans over time. The lowest microbial count reduction was observed in the case of L. rhamnosus. Further research is required in order to fully understand the specifics of nHAp and nFAp antimicrobial action. However, the results were found to be more favourable for nFAp biomaterial.

The swift integration of ‘Gummetal’ into the orthodontic armamentarium can be attributed to its distinct advantages as an entirely new Ti-Nb-based beta titanium alloy. Developed by Toyota Central R&D Labs and publicly revealed in April 2003, this innovative material is rapidly reshaping orthodontic practices. Its sui generis properties allow its use as a potential substitute for the Multi-Loop Edgewise Archwire (MEAW) method. Three-dimensional orthodontic movement using this new alloy could eliminate the disadvantages of the MEAW method, such as its technical complexity and patient discomfort. In our comprehensive review of the current literature, we examined relevant publications sourced from the PUBMED database and explored one seminal work on Gummetal from the journal literature. Characteristic properties of Gummetal, such as its exceptional flexibility, superelasticity, and malleability (approximately 10 times greater than conventional metals), enable seamless formation of bends without posing challenges, thereby allowing precise control over orthodontic force application. Also worthy of mention are Gummetal’s biocompatibility and non-toxic properties, along with its low coefficient of friction. The wire seems to be a relatively easy way to achieve good occlusion. Its usage does not require extensive experience in terms of manual skill, and it is not time consuming. Diligent usage of any prescribed plastics by the patient is crucial to prevent complications and ensure successful orthodontic outcomes.

The insufficient volume of dental ridges is one of the most severe problems regarding an oral cavity. An inadequate amount can cause problems during various types of dental treatment. Its complexity originates from the etiopathogenesis of this problem. In this study, the representatives of auto-, allo-, and xenografts are compared. The physic-chemical differences between each of them were evaluated using XRD (X-ray Powder Diffraction), a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), FT-IR (Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy), and TGA (thermogravimetric analysis). Based on the SEM images, it was observed that the origin of the material has an influence on collagen fiber compact level and porosity. Following a comparison of FT-IR spectra and XRD, the crystal and chemical structures were described. Based on TGA, different water concentrations of the investigated materials, their high thermal stability, and concentration of inorganic phase, hydroxyapatite was determined. The presented study is important because it delivers information about chemical structure and its impact on bone regeneration. This knowledge should be taken into consideration by dental clinicians, because different types of bone grafts can accommodate the achievement of various goals.

The global concern related with growing number of bacterial pathogens, resistant to numerous antibiotics, prone scientific environment to search for new antimicrobials. Antiseptics appear to be suitable candidates as adjunctive agents to antibiotics or alternative local treatment option aiming to prevent and treat infections. 1,2-benzothiazines are considered one the most promising of them. In this research twenty 1,2-benzothiazine 1,1-dioxide derivatives were scrutinized with regard to their biological activity. Three of them are new. For evaluation of compounds’ activity against microbial pathogens, disk diffusion method and serial microdilution method was applied. To establish the cytotoxicity profile of tested 1,2-benzothiazines 1,1-dioxides derivatives, the cytotoxicity assay using fibroblasts L292 was performed. Antimicrobial activity of all tested compounds against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis strains was higher than antimicrobial activity of DMSO solvent, which possesses antimicrobial activity itself. Gram-negative P. aeruginosa, E. coli and K. pneumoniae have shown susceptibility only to compounds 3e, 7i and 7l. None of tested compounds was effective against C. albicans. Compound 6g has demonstrated the strongest antimicrobial potency (MIC = 0.00975 mg/mL) among compounds of series 6. Compounds of series 7, namely 7d, 7f, 7g had the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Compound 7f displayed also the lowest cytotoxic effect against fibroblast cell line among series 7 compounds. All tested derivatives displayed lower MIC against Gram-positive bacteria than commercially applied antiseptic, povidone iodine, which MIC value range for tested Gram-positive bacteria was 1.56–6.25 mg/mL.
