This paper discusses the radiation budget and its temporal variability over Poland. The data analysis is based on the MERRA-2 reanalysis for the years 1980–2020. During the last four decades, the enhancement of climate warming has been observed, which coincides with the changes in the radiation budget. Positive and statistically significant trends at the top of the atmosphere (TOA; 0.7 ± 0.2 W/m2/10 year) and on the Earth's surface (1.5 ± 0.2 W/m2/10 year) radiation budget (net downward flux) are mainly a consequence of changes in the amount of aerosol and greenhouse gases (GHG). According to MERRA-2, the AOD during this period decreased by − 0.19 (at 550 nm), which is 87% of the long-term (1980–2021) mean value (0.22). The reduction of AOD is due mainly to the decline of non-absorbing sulfate particles, which leads to a reduction of single-scattering albedo (SSA) by − 0.008 per decade and Angstrom exponent (AE) by − 0.06 per decade (both trends statistically significant). On the other hand, the GHG concentration increased by 4.9%/10 year and 3%/10 year, respectively, for CO2 and CH4. The total column of water vapor increased (1.3%/10 year), while ozone decreased (− 1%/10 year). Despite the fact that cloud cover and cloud optical depth (COD) decreased (− 1.8%/10 year and − 1.0%/10 year), the impact of cloud on temporal variability radiation budget is small. It can be explained by nearly compensated shortwave (SW) cooling and longwave (LW) heating effects. During the analysis period, near-surface air temperature increased by 2.0 °C. The estimated increase in SW net surface radiation (7.9 W/m2) leads to climate warming by 0.8 °C, which is a consequence mainly of the reduction of aerosol (0.4 °C) and cloud cover (0.2 °C). The impact of the change of SW radiation on air temperature is more pronounced during the warm season, while during the cold, air temperature change is controlled mainly by the variability of air mass advection. Quantifying the elevation dependency of radiation partitioning in high‐altitude mountains is crucial for projecting regional energy balance while remains highly uncertain. We compared the surface radiation partitioning parameters across a meadow (3,200 m), shrub (3,400 m), and forb (3,600 m) along a southern slope of the Qilian Mountains. At a daily scale, the downward shortwave radiation (Rs) fluctuated minimally among the grassland types probably induced by similar site orientations. The greatest downward and upward longwave radiation (Ld and Lu) happened at the lowest meadow while the largest net shortwave (Sn) and longwave (Ln) radiation occurred at the deciduous shrub. The net all‐wave radiation (Rn) of the meadow and shrub was similar and exceeded that of the forb by ∼20%. The differences in Rn between the sites were jointly explained by those of upward shortwave radiation (Ru) and Lu, more than by Rs and Ld, suggesting the importance of surface attributes. The monthly normalized effective terrestrial radiation (λ, the ratio of Ln to Rs) varied insignificantly among the sites and averaged 0.25 ± 0.05, which was comparable to the global mean value (0.26). The smallest surface albedo (α, the ratio of Ru to Rs) and largest radiation efficiency (η, the ratio of Rn to Rs) were 0.13 ± 0.02 and 0.64 ± 0.09, respectively, both at the shrub. Grassland type dominated the spatial variations of monthly α and η. These findings highlighted the importance of grassland types to explain the spatiotemporal variations of radiation partitioning parameters in high‐altitude alpine grasslands. Plain Language Summary: An accurate understanding of the radiation budget and partitioning of high‐altitude mountainous regions played a pivotal role in projecting the global climate system. This is especially true in the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau, the so‐called "roof of the world", where there is a large scarcity of high‐quality field observations from different vegetation types. We compared the four‐component radiation measurements of alpine grasslands along an altitudinal gradient (a meadow at 3,200 m, a shrub at 3,400 m, and a forb at 3,600 m) of a southern slope of the Qilian Mountains. We found that the incoming shortwave radiation changed little across the three sites. However, the lowest meadow had the largest incoming and outgoing longwave radiation. Moon-Based Earth Radiation Observation (MERO) is expected to improve and enrich the current Earth radiation budget (ERB). For the design of MERO's instrument and the interpretation of Moon-based data, evaluating the uncertainty of the instrument's Entrance Pupil Irradiance (EPI) is an important part. In this work, by analyzing the effect of the Angular Distribution Models (ADMs), Earth's Top of Atmosphere (TOA) flux, and the Earth–Moon distance on the EPI, the uncertainty of EPI is finally studied with the help of the theory of errors. Results show that the ADMs have a stronger influence on the Short-Wave (SW) EPI than those from the Long-Wave (LW). For the change of TOA flux, the SW EPI could keep the attribute of varying hourly time scales, but the LW EPI will lose its hourly-scale variability. The variation in EPI caused by the hourly change of the Moon–Earth distance does not exceed 0.13 mW∙m−2 (1σ). The maximum hourly combined uncertainty reveals that the SW and LW combined uncertainties are about 5.18 and 1.08 mW∙m−2 (1σ), respectively. The linear trend extraction of the EPI demonstrates that the Moon-based data can effectively capture the overall linear change trend of Earth's SW and LW outgoing radiation, and the uncertainty does not change the linear trend of data. The variation of SW and LW EPIs in the long term are 0.16 mW∙m−2 (SW) and 0.23 mW∙m−2 (LW) per decade, respectively. Based on the constraint of the uncertainty, a simplified dynamic response model is built for the cavity radiometer, a kind of MERO instrument, and the results illuminate that the Cassegrain optical system and electrical substitution principle can realize the detection of Earth's outing radiation with the sensitivity design goal 1 mW∙m−2. A Moon-based radiometer can provide continuous measurements for the Earth's full-disk broadband irradiance, which is useful for studying the Earth's Radiation Budget (ERB) at the height of the Top of the Atmosphere (TOA). The ERB describes how the Earth obtains solar energy and emits energy to space through the outgoing broadband Short-Wave (SW) and emitted thermal Long-Wave (LW) radiation. In this work, a model for estimating the Earth's outgoing radiative flux from the measurements of a Moon-based radiometer is established. Using the model, the full-disk LW and SW outgoing radiative flux are gained by converting the unfiltered entrance pupil irradiances (EPIs) with the help of the anisotropic characteristics of the radiances. Based on the radiative transfer equation, the unfiltered EPI time series is used to validate the established model. By comparing the simulations for a Moon-based radiometer with the satellite-based data from the National Institute of Standards and Technology Advanced Radiometer (NISTAR) and the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) datasets, the simulations show that the daytime SW fluxes from the Moon-based measurements are expected to vary between 194 and 205 Wm−2; these simulations agree well with the CERES data. The simulations are about 5 to 20 Wm−2 smaller than the NISTAR data. For the simulated Moon-based LW fluxes, the range is 251~287 Wm−2. The Moon-based and NISTAR fluxes are consistently 5~15 Wm−2 greater than CERES LW fluxes, and both of them also show larger diurnal variations compared with the CERES fluxes. The correlation coefficients of SW fluxes for Moon-based data and NISTAR data are 0.97, 0.63, and 0.53 for the months of July, August, and September, respectively. Compared with the SW flux, the correlation of LW fluxes is more stable for the same period and the correlation coefficients are 0.87, 0.69, and 0.61 for July to September 2017. In this research, three steps were taken to estimate the solar energy balance on the earth's surface. First, the amount of incident radiation on a tilted surface at the top of the atmosphere was calculated. Then, by using MODIS data, the transmittance coefficients of the atmosphere were estimated and the amount of direct radiation, diffuse radiation and global radiation in cloudless sky conditions were estimated. In the next step, based on the cloud transmittance coefficient, the amount of all sky radiation was estimated. Finally, by estimating the actual albedo of the earth's surface, the balance of solar radiation on the earth's surface was evaluated. The average top of atmosphere radiation in Iran is about 365 Watts per square meter. On a tilted surface, Iran receives 356 Watts per square meter of solar radiation. The difference in the angle of radiation on a tilted surface compared to the flat ground due to the slope of the ground and the difference in the duration of the radiation on a tilted surface compared to the flat ground due to the aspect of slope resulted a 2.5 percent reduction in the amount of radiation in Iran. In Iran, on a clear and sunny day about one percent of solar radiation is lost by air molecules not reaching the ground. The phenomenon of Rayleigh scattering also prevents about 9% of radiation from reaching the earth's surface. Therefore, about 10% of solar radiation is reduced due to atmospheric gases. The presence of aerosols, water vapor and ozone also affect the transparency of the atmosphere to solar radiation. The effect of these gases can be expressed by the transmission coefficient namely the aerosols transmittance coefficient which is low in desert areas of the country and on the coasts of Oman Sea and Persian Gulf and for Khuzestan Plain. In these areas, between 20 and 40 percent of the solar radiation is prevented from reaching the earth's surface by the aerosols. On the other hand, in the heights of Zagros and Alborz mountains and in the heights of Khorasan and in the north-west of Iran, aerosols do not play a significant role in reducing solar radiation. In Iran, the average reduction of solar radiation due to the presence of aerosols is about 17%. As expected, water vapor transmission is minimal at high altitudes, and about 10% of solar radiation is prevented from reaching the earth's surface due to atmospheric water vapor. On the shores of the Oman Sea, Caspian Sea, and Persian Gulf, the amount of attenuation due to atmospheric water vapor is about 14%. In Iran, the average reduction of solar radiation due to the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere is about 11%. The average transmittance of direct surface solar radiation in Iran is about 60%. In other words, the atmosphere prevents about 40% of direct sunlight from reaching the earth's surface. In mountainous areas the transmittance coefficient is the maximum and exceeds 70%. In the southern banks and eastern and central regions of Iran, due to the presence of aerosols and water vapor, the figure is less than 60%. The amount of mean direct radiation in Iran is about 213 Watts per square meter. Diffuse radiation is a small part of the total radiation. The average transmittance of diffuse radiation in Iran is about 10%. Aerosols play an important role in scattering solar radiation. The amount of mean diffuse radiation that reaches the earth's surface in Iran is about 35 Watts per square meter. This study shows that the global radiation in Iran is 248 Watts per square meter. The average transmittance coefficient of global radiation is 70% and follows the configuration of topography and distance from the sea. Average cloudiness of Iran is about 26% and the average ratio of actual to possible sunshine hours is about 72%. On the shores of the Caspian Sea, the cloudiness exceeds 60%. The average cloud transmittance coefficient in Iran is about 83%. In Iran, clouds contribute about 17% in the reduction of radiation. On a cloudy day, the mean amount of solar radiation that passes through the atmosphere and reaches the surface of the earth on a tilted surface is 205 Watts per square meter. The average albedo of Iran is about 21%. Nearly 80% of the solar radiation that reaches the earth's surface is absorbed by the surface. One of the major benefits of a green roof is its thermal performance compared to a conventional concrete roof building; it maintains indoor temperatures under varying outdoor temperatures. In this study, data were collected from four newly built detached buildings with a bare concrete roof, a highly reflective roof, and two green roofs, respectively. The results showed that the green roofs lowered the maximum indoor temperature by 6.83? on average compared to a bare concrete roof building, which potentially saves a substantial amount of energy required for cooling buildings. The surface energy balance analysis using the flux profile method showed that the difference in ground heat flux depending on roof type is crucial for determining the indoor temperature of a building. Moreover, the green roof consumed a considerable fraction of net radiation for the latent heat (70.7%), whereas the bare concrete roof used a larger fraction of net radiation for the sensible heat flux (45.3%) and ground heat flux (16.2%). the green roof consumed a considerable amount of net radiation for the latent heat flux, but little ground heat flux. By contrast, the bare concrete roof used a larger fraction of the net radiation for the ground heat flux and the sensible heat flux, which increased the temperature of both the indoor building and the air close to the surface. More than 60 percent of the global surface is covered by clouds, and they play a vital role in the hydrological circle, climate change, and radiation budgets by modifying shortwaves and longwave. Weather forecast reports are critical to areas such as air and sea transport, energy, agriculture, and the environment. The time has come for artificial intelligence-powered devices to take the place of the current method by which decision-making experts determine cloud types. Convolutional neural network models (CNNs) are starting to be utilized for identifying the types of clouds that are caused by meteorological occurrences. This study uses the publicly available Cirrus Cumulus Stratus Nimbus (CCSN) dataset, which consists of 2543 ground-based cloud images altogether. We propose a model called Cloud-MobiNet for the classification of ground-based clouds. The model is an abridged convolutional neural network based on MobileNet. The architecture of Cloud-MobiNet is divided into two blocks, namely the MobileNet building block and the support MobileNet block (SM block). The MobileNet building block consists of the weights of the depthwise separable convolutions and pointwise separable convolutions of the MobileNet model. The SM block is made up of three dense network layers for feature extraction. This makes the Cloud-MobiNet model very lightweight to be implemented on a smartphone. An overall accuracy success of 97.45% was obtained for the CCSN dataset used for cloud-type classification. Cloud-MobiNet promises to be a significant model in the short term, since automated ground-based cloud classification is anticipated to be a preferred means of cloud observation, not only in meteorological analysis and forecasting but also in the aeronautical and aviation industries. Mount Emei is located on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, on the transition zone between the main body of the Tibetan Plateau and the Sichuan Basin in China. It is not only the necessary place for the eastward movement of the plateau system but also the place where the southwest vortex begins to develop. Its special geographical location makes it particularly important to understand the turbulence characteristics and surface energy balance of this place. Based on the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) tower data, radiation observation data and surface flux data of Mount Emei station on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau from December 2019 to February 2022, the components of surface equilibrium are estimated by the eddy correlation method and Thermal Diffusion Equation and Correction (TDEC) method, the characteristics of surface energy exchange in the Mount Emei area are analyzed, and the aerodynamic and thermodynamic parameters are estimated. The results show that the annual average value of zero-plane displacement d is 10.45 m, the annual average values of aerodynamic roughness Z 0 m and aerothermal roughness Z 0 h are 1.61 and 1.67 m, respectively, and the annual average values of momentum flux transport coefficient C D and sensible heat flux transport coefficient C H are 1.58 × 10 − 2 and 3.79 × 10 − 3 , respectively. The dimensionless vertical wind fluctuation variance in the Mount Emei area under unstable conditions can better conform to the 1/3rd power law of the Monin–Obukhov similarity theory, while the dimensionless horizontal wind fluctuation variance under unstable lamination and the dimensionless 3D wind fluctuation variance under stable condition does not conform to this law. In the near-neutral case, the dimensionless velocity variance in the vertical direction in this area is 1.314. The daytime dominance of sensible and latent heat fluxes varied seasonally, with latent heat fluxes dominating in summer and sensible heat transport dominating in winter. he surface albedo of Mount Emei in four seasons is between 0.04 and 0.08. The surface albedo in summer and autumn is higher than that in Mount Emei. The influence of the underlying surface on surface reflectance is much greater than other factors, such as altitude, longitude and latitude. The non-closure phenomenon is significant in the Mount Emei area. The energy closure rates before and after considering canopy thermal storage are 46% and 48%, respectively. The possible reason for the energy non-closure in this area is that the influence of horizontal advection and vertical advection on the energy closure is not considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The land surface process of the Qinghai-Xizang （Tibet） Plateau has an important impact on China's weather and climate.Mount Emei is in the southeast edge of the Qinghai-Xizang （Tibet） Plateau.It is necessary place for the eastward movement of the plateau system， and the place where the southwest vortex begins to develop.Based on the atmospheric boundary layer gradient tower data， radiation observation data and surface flux data of Emeishan station on the eastern edge of Qinghai-Xizang （Tibet） Plateau from December 2019 to November 2020， this paper uses the eddy correlation method to analyze the changes of surface flux and evapotranspiration near the surface layer in Emeishan area， and estimates the zero plane displacement， aerodynamic roughness， aerothermal roughness Kinetic and thermodynamic parameters such as momentum flux transport coefficient and sensible heat flux transport coefficient.The main conclusions are as follows： The temperature in the canopy is higher than that in the canopy during the day， but the opposite at night.The relative humidity in the canopy is higher than that on the canopy， and the diurnal variation of wind speed near the ground is more obvious in the upper layer than that in the lower layer.The seasonal variation characteristics of near ground temperature， relative humidity and wind speed are obvious.The vertical wind profile has significantly different correlation and inflection point phenomenon in the canopy and above the canopy.The growth rate of wind speed below the inflection point with height is significantly smaller than that above the inflection point.The annual average value of zero plane displacement d is 10.45 m； The annual mean values of aerodynamic roughness Z0m and thermodynamic roughness roughness Z0h are 1.65 m and 9.95 m respectively.The annual average values of momentum flux transport coefficient CD and sensible heat flux transport coefficient CH are 1.58×10-2 and 3.79×10-3 respectively.Aerodynamic roughness fluctuates greatly with season， while aerothermodynamic roughness is opposite.The occurrence times and amount of precipitation have obvious seasonal changes.There are more precipitation days and precipitation in July， and the daily change of precipitation is obvious， showing the typical characteristics of night rain in Western Sichuan Basin.The daily variation amplitude of sensible heat flux and latent heat flux is large.The latent heat flux is dominant in summer and sensible heat transport is dominant in winter.The evapotranspiration of each day mainly occurs from 08:00 （Beijing Time the same as after） to 17:00， and reaches the maximum from 11:00 to 14:00， and the seasonal difference is obvious.

Forced by observations from 1 June to 31 August 2014， which are provided by Naqu station of Plateau Climate and Environment in northern Qinghai-Xizang Plateau， CLM4.5 is used to evaluate the influence on simulated results of both radiation balance and exchange of water-heat after some surface parameters and parameterization schemes including LAI、 vegetation coverage and roughness length have changed.The reason for these changes are also discussed in this article.The results suggested that （1） Compared with the results produced by default scheme Z98， those of schemes named Z12 and B82 perform better in decreasing the positive bias of latent heat fluxes and negative bias of sensible heat fluxes.（2） aerodynamic roughness length calculated by revised Massman model and a method named “Chen” are respectively used to replace the default value， the outcomes produced by CLM approach the observations further.（3）With leaf area index increasing， sensible heat fluxes and reflected radiation and surface long-wave radiation decrease a lot， while latent heat fluxes are on the increase.（4）As the vegetation cover increases， latent fluxes decreases， while sensible heat fluxes and reflected radiation and surface long-wave radiation rise， meanwhile soil temperature and moisture also rise.The aim of this study is to provide a basis for future ambition to simulate the balance of ground surface water and heat over the whole Plateau.

A method for evaluating stratospheric aerosol effects on the stratospheric radiation budget according to balloon sounding with an optical aerosol backscatter probe is presented. It is shown for the sounding in the equatorial zone under conditions of perturbed aerosol filling of the stratosphere that observed changes in the composition of stratospheric aerosol lead to significant changes (2–3-fold) in radiative heating. The evaluation technique is based on using the radiative (line-by-line and Monte Carlo) model of solar radiation transfer and can be especially useful in case of episodical perturbations of the stratospheric aerosol layer resulting from anthropogenic and natural disasters accompanied by aerosol emissions. • Positive surface radiation budget (R net) (73.20 W/m2) was observed in 2001–2020. • Positive shortwave radiation budget R snet (135.52 W/m2) dominated the R net. • Positive longwave radiation budget R lnet (-60.92 W/m2) helped to cool the Earth. • Vegetation contributed 41.47%, 10.92% and 68.70% of R snet , R lnet and R net. • Vegetation influences were strongly affected by climatic interactions. Surface radiation budget was an important variable for global climate and eco-environment change. Vegetation exerted significant influences on the budget by altering the surface thermal properties and land-atmospheric interactions, while the sign and magnitude remained unclear. With the aid of satellite observations, this study estimated the vegetation influences through a semi-physical approach. Methodologically, a physical model of the total surface radiation budget (R net) was firstly built. Then, the empirical regressions between vegetation with radiation albedo and thermal emissivity were adopted. Finally, the vegetation influences were estimated by measuring the response of budgets (R snet , R lnet and subsequently R net) to vegetation perturbance. Our results demonstrated that the global R net presented a positive budget (73.20 W/m2) over the past two decades (2001–2020), which was dominated by the positive R snet (135.52 W/m2). In contrast, the R lnet showed a negative value (−60.92 W/m2), which helped to mitigate the warming trend. Vegetation tended to enhance the positive surface radiation budgets. Overall, the vegetation influences on R snet , R lnet and R net were 56.20 W/m2, −6.65 W/m2, and 50.29 W/m2, accounting for 41.47 %, 10.92 % and 68.70 % of the total budgets. Temporally, the vegetation influences showed increasing trends of 0.019 W/m2/yr (R snet), 0.007 W/m2/yr (R lnet) and 0.031 W/m2/yr (R net). Physically, temporal variations of the vegetation influences were strongly affected by the interactions of atmospheric factors, particularly of the cloud, aerosol, and greenhouse gases (GHGs). Results of this study help to capture characteristics of surface radiation budgets and corresponding mechanism, which could support the climatic adaption and eco-environment management. Global warming causes the replacement of lichens by shrubs in alpine and Arctic ecosystems. Since shrubs have lower albedo than lichens, this shrub encroachment can lead to a positive climatic feedback, resulting in higher temperatures in the surroundings. Therefore, gaining knowledge on the surface albedo of shrubs and lichens is important. Environmental factors also influence the surface albedo, but have often been neglected, potentially leading to biased results. In an experimental setup, we analyzed albedos of the lichen species Cladonia stellaris, Flavocetraria nivalis and Cetraria islandica, and how albedo changes with a stepwise replacement by the dwarf shrub Empetrum nigrum. Albedo was measured with radiometers in a paired set up. By setting certain environmental variables and species composition (monocultures) to be constant, we quantified the impact of environmental factors such as cloud cover, aspect and zenith angle on the surface albedo of two lichen species. Surface albedo (mean values ± SD) differed between C. islandica (0.155 ± 0.015), C. stellaris (0.364 ± 0.019), F. nivalis (0.350 ± 0.022) and E. nigrum (0.154 ± 0.016), and an increase in shrub cover at the expense of lichen cover led to a corresponding decrease in albedo. A 0.6 reduction in clearness index (more clouds) produced a 0.054 albedo decline. On the north‐facing aspect, albedo was 0.023 lower than on the south‐facing aspect. Albedo increased by 0.032 with an increase in zenith angle of 15°. Albedo variations caused by these studied environmental factors significantly affect the radiation budget of alpine and Arctic vegetation. We therefore stress the importance of considering environmental factors when surface albedos are estimated. Likewise, our species‐specific measurements can be a basis for further studies of the impact of climate change on alpine and Arctic vegetation and species‐related feedback mechanisms. The Earth’s spherical albedo describes the ratio of light reflected from the Earth to that incident from the Sun, an important variable for the Earth’s radiation balance. The spherical albedo has been previously estimated from satellites in low-Earth orbits, and from light reflected from the Moon. We developed a method to derive the Earth’s spherical shortwave albedo using the images from the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) on board National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR). The satellite is located in the Lagrange 1 point between the Earth and the Sun and observes the complete illuminated part of the Earth at once. The method allows us to provide continuously updated spherical albedo time series data starting from 2015. This time series shows a systematic seasonal variation with the mean annual albedo estimated as 0.295±0.008 and an exceptional albedo maximum in 2020, attributed to unusually abundant cloudiness over the Southern Oceans.

El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability is accompanied by out‐of‐phase anomalies in the top‐of‐atmosphere tropical radiation budget, with anomalous downward flux (i.e., net radiative heating) before El Niño and anomalous upward flux thereafter (and vice versa for La Niña). Here, we show that these radiative anomalies result mainly from a sea surface temperature (SST) "pattern effect," mediated by changes in tropical‐mean tropospheric stability. These stability changes are caused by SST anomalies migrating from climatologically cool to warm regions over the ENSO cycle. Our results are suggestive of a two‐way coupling between SST variability and radiation, where ENSO‐induced radiative changes may in turn feed back onto SST during ENSO. Plain Language Summary: Predicting long‐term climate change requires understanding how and why the Earth's radiation budget varies on short timescales. Natural climate variability on such timescales is dominated by the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, involving large changes in sea surface temperature (SST) in the tropical Pacific. Here, we show that the evolution of the tropical radiation budget during ENSO events is dictated by the location of the SST anomalies, which migrate from colder regions to warmer regions. Abstract Land-use change is one of the focal processes in Earth system models because it has strong impacts on terrestrial biogeophysical and biogeochemical conditions. However, modeling land-use impacts is still challenging because of model complexity and uncertainty. This study examined the results of simulations of land-use change impacts by the Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate, Earth System version 2 for long-term simulations (MIROC-ES2L) conducted under the Land-Use Model Intercomparison Project protocol. In a historical experiment, the model reproduced biogeophysical impacts such as decreasing trends in land-surface net radiation and evapotranspiration by about 1970. Among biogeochemical impacts, the model captured the global decrease of vegetation and soil carbon stocks caused by extensive deforestation. By releasing ecosystem carbon stock to the atmosphere, land-use change shortened the mean residence time of terrestrial carbon and accelerated its turnover rate, especially in low latitudes. Future projections based on Shared Socioeconomic Pathways indicated substantial alteration of land conditions caused primarily by climatic change and secondarily by land-use change. Sensitivity experiments conducted by exchanging land-use data between different future projection baseline experiments showed that, at the global scale, the anticipated extent of land-use conversion would likely play a modest role in the future terrestrial radiation, water, and carbon budgets. Regional investigations revealed that future land use would exert a considerable influence on runoff and vegetation carbon stock. Further model refinement is required to improve its capability to analyze its complicated terrestrial linkages or nexus (e.g., food, bioenergy, and carbon sequestration) to climate-change impacts.

Aerosols emitted in densely populated and industrialized Indo‐Gangetic Plain, one of the most polluted regions in the world, modulate regional climate, monsoon, and Himalayan glacier retreat. Thus, this region is important for understanding aerosol perturbations and their resulting impacts on atmospheric changes during COVID‐19 lockdown period, a natural experimental condition created by the pandemic. By analyzing 5 years (2016–2020) data of aerosols and performing a radiative transfer calculation, we found that columnar and near‐surface aerosol loadings decreased, leading to reductions in radiative cooling at the surface and top of the atmosphere and atmospheric warming during lockdown period. Further, satellite data analyses showed increases in cloud optical thickness and cloud‐particle effective radius and decrease in lower tropospheric air temperature during lockdown period. These results indicate critical influences of COVID‐19 lockdown on regional climate and water cycle over Indo‐Gangetic Plain, emphasizing need for further studies from modeling perspectives. Plain Language Summary: The COVID‐19 control measures constrained human activities, reducing anthropogenic emissions around the world, including Indo‐Gangetic Plain (IGP), one of the global aerosol hotspots. Mount Emei is located on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, on the transition zone between the main body of the Tibetan Plateau and the Sichuan Basin in China. It is not only the necessary place for the eastward movement of the plateau system but also the place where the southwest vortex begins to develop. Its special geographical location makes it particularly important to understand the turbulence characteristics and surface energy balance of this place. Based on the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) tower data, radiation observation data and surface flux data of Mount Emei station on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau from December 2019 to February 2022, the components of surface equilibrium are estimated by the eddy correlation method and Thermal Diffusion Equation and Correction (TDEC) method, the characteristics of surface energy exchange in the Mount Emei area are analyzed, and the aerodynamic and thermodynamic parameters are estimated. The results show that the annual average value of zero-plane displacement d is 10.45 m, the annual average values of aerodynamic roughness Z0m and aerothermal roughness Z0h are 1.61 and 1.67 m, respectively, and the annual average values of momentum flux transport coefficient CD and sensible heat flux transport coefficient CH are 1.58×10−2 and 3.79×10−3, respectively. The dimensionless vertical wind fluctuation variance in the Mount Emei area under unstable conditions can better conform to the 1/3rd power law of the Monin–Obukhov similarity theory, while the dimensionless horizontal wind fluctuation variance under unstable lamination and the dimensionless 3D wind fluctuation variance under stable condition does not conform to this law. In the near-neutral case, the dimensionless velocity variance in the vertical direction in this area is 1.314. The daytime dominance of sensible and latent heat fluxes varied seasonally, with latent heat fluxes dominating in summer and sensible heat transport dominating in winter. he surface albedo of Mount Emei in four seasons is between 0.04 and 0.08. The surface albedo in summer and autumn is higher than that in Mount Emei. The influence of the underlying surface on surface reflectance is much greater than other factors, such as altitude, longitude and latitude. The non-closure phenomenon is significant in the Mount Emei area. The energy closure rates before and after considering canopy thermal storage are 46% and 48%, respectively. The possible reason for the energy non-closure in this area is that the influence of horizontal advection and vertical advection on the energy closure is not considered.

This paper makes use of spaceborne observational data sets in order to characterize radiative processes involved in spring time heat waves in the Sahel. Spring corresponds to the hottest period of the year, with a high aerosol load, a gradual moistening, and the presence of clouds contributing to greenhouse effect. Heat waves are defined as synoptic events that have a large spatial extent and a duration longer than 3 days. Two types of heat waves are studied: daytime heat waves, detected with the daily maximum temperature and nighttime heat waves, detected with the daily minimum temperature. Daytime heat waves correspond to situations where cloud optical thickness is lower than the climatology and a large number of these situations are also associated with a lower aerosol load and a drier atmosphere. Nighttime heat waves correspond to a moister atmosphere compared to the climatology. In a large fraction of them, an increase in aerosol loading is also observed. This study, only based on observational data sets, highlights the subtle but different radiative balance at play in both types of events. This study investigates the top‐of‐atmosphere (TOA) radiation budget (RT) and cloud radiative effects (CREs) over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and adjacent Asian monsoon regions including Eastern China (EC) and South Asia (SA) using the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6) simulations. Considerable simulation biases occur but specific causes differ in these regions. Most models underestimate the intensity of annual mean RT and cloud radiative cooling effect over the TP, and the RT during the cold‐warm transition period is hard to capture. The biases in surface temperature and cloud fractions substantially contribute to cloud‐radiation biases over the western and eastern TP, respectively. Over EC, the intensity of RT and cloud radiative cooling effect is seriously underestimated especially in the springtime when the model spread is large, and their biases are closely related to less low‐middle cloud fractions and weaker ascending motion. Over SA, simulation biases mainly arise from longwave radiative components associated with less high cloud fraction and weaker convection, with the large model spread in the summertime. The annual cycles of RT and CREs over EC and SA can be well reproduced by most models, while the summertime peak of the net CRE over the TP occurs later than the observation. The RT and its simulation bias strongly depend on the cloud radiative cooling effect over EC and SA. Our results demonstrate that contemporary climate models still have obvious difficulties in representing various complex cloud‐radiation processes in Asian monsoon regions. Metropolitan Beijing is facing many environmental problems such as haze and urban heat island due to the rapid urbanization. Surface shortwave, longwave, and net radiations are key components of the surface-atmosphere radiation budget. Since megacities are affected by the thermal radiation of complex landscape structures and atmospheric environments, quantitative and spatially explicit retrieval from remotely sensed data remains a challenge. We collected the surface radiation fluxes from seven fixed sites representing different land-use types to calibrate the local parameters for remotely sensed retrieval of net radiation. We proposed a remote sensing–based surface radiation retrieval method by embedding the underlying land covers and integrating the observational data. The improved method is feasible to accurately retrieve surface radiation and delineate spatial characteristics in metropolitan areas. The accuracy evaluation indicated that the difference between remotely sensed and in situ observed net radiation ranged within 0~± 40 W· m−2. The root mean squared error of the estimated net surface radiation was 32.71 W· m−2. The strongly spatial heterogeneity of surface radiation components in metropolitan Beijing was closely related to land-cover patterns from urban area to outskirts. We also found that the surface net radiation had a decreasing trend from 1984 to 2014, and the net radiation in the urban area was lower than that in the outskirts. According to the surface radiation budgets, urbanization resulted in the cooling effect in net radiation flux in the daytime, which was stemmed from low atmospheric transmittances from massive aerosol concentration and high surface albedo from light building materials.

Moon-based Earth radiation observation can provide longer-term, continuous multi-angle measurements for the Earth’s outward radiative flux. In addition, the large distance between the Moon and Earth means that the radiation can be monitored by a non-scanning Moon-based Wide Field-of-View (MWFOV) radiometer considering the Earth as one pixel. In order to parameterize the radiometer, studying the effect of the temporal sampling interval on irradiance is of great importance. In this work, based on radiation transfer model, simulated irradiance time series from March 2000 to December 2020 were analyzed. Then, we used them to reveal the effects of the sampling interval on irradiance. The results show that the measurements of the MWFOV radiometer can reveal the variation of irradiance on hourly, daily and monthly time scales, and the high-frequency measurements can reflect the variation of scene types in the MWFOV-viewed area. In order to obtain more meaningful measurements, the radiation resolution of the MWFOV radiometer should be better than 0.5mW∙m−2 with an accuracy of 1% or better in the future actual design, and the sampling interval should be less than 1 h, which can ensure that 97% of the surface area can be sampled more than nine times per day for longwave radiation. The derived results in this study could facilitate Moon-based data processing and the determination of the sampling interval and radiation resolution of an MWFOV under a certain manufacturing cost and error limit.

Each year landscape fires across the globe emit black and organic carbon smoke particles that can last in the atmosphere for days to weeks. We characterized the climate response to these aerosols using an Earth system model. We used remote sensing observations of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and simulations from the Community Atmosphere Model, version 5 (CAM5) to optimize satellite-derived smoke emissions for high biomass burning regions. Subsequent global simulations using the adjusted fire emissions produced AODs that were in closer agreement with surface and space-based measurements. We then used CAM5, which included radiative aerosol effects, to evaluate theclimate response to the fire-aerosol forcing. We conducted two 52 yr simulations, one with four sets of monthly cycling 1997-2009 fire emissions and one without. Fire emissions increased global mean annual AOD by 10% (+0.02) and decreased net all-sky surface radiation by 1% (1.3 W m(-2)). Elevated AODs reduced global surface temperatures by 0.13 +/- 0.01 degrees C. Though global precipitation declined only slightly, patterns of precipitation changed, with large reductions near the Equator offset by smaller increases north and south of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). A combination of increased tropospheric heating and reduced surface temperatures increased equatorial subsidence and weakened the Hadley circulation. As a consequence, precipitation decreased over tropical forests in South America, Africa and equatorial Asia. These results are consistent with the observed correlation between global temperatures and the strength of the Hadley circulation and studies linking tropospheric heating from black carbon aerosols with tropical expansion.

Fires are a global phenomenon that impact climate and biogeochemical cycles, and interact with the biosphere, atmosphere and cryosphere. These impacts occur on a range of temporal and spatial scales and are difficult to quantify globally based solely on observations. Here we assess the role of fires in the climate system using model estimates of radiative forcing (RF) from global fires in pre-industrial, present day, and future time periods. Fire emissions of trace gases and aerosols are derived from Community Land Model simulations and then used in a series of Community Atmosphere Model simulations with representative emissions from the years 1850, 2000, and 2100. Additional simulations are carried out with fire emissions from the Global Fire Emission Database for a present-day comparison. These results are compared against the results of simulations with no fire emissions to compute the contribution from fires. We consider the impacts of fire on greenhouse gas concentrations, aerosol effects (including aerosol effects on biogeochemical cycles), and land and snow surface albedo. Overall, we estimate that pre-industrial fires were responsible for a RF of −1 W m−2 with respect to a pre-industrial climate without fires. The largest magnitude pre-industrial forcing from fires was the indirect aerosol effect on clouds (−1.6 W m−2). This was balanced in part by an increase in carbon dioxide concentrations due to fires (+0.83 W m−2). The RF of fires increases by 0.5 W m−2 from 1850 to 2000 and 0.2 W m−2 from 1850 to 2100 in the model representation from a combination of changes in fire activity and changes in the background environment in which fires occur, especially increases and decreases in the anthropogenic aerosol burden. Thus, fires play an important role in both the natural equilibrium climate and the climate perturbed by anthropogenic activity and need to be considered in future climate projections.

This study analyzes the observed monthly deseasonalized and detrended variability of the tropical radiation budget and suggests that variations of the lower‐tropospheric stability and of the spatial organization of deep convection both strongly contribute to this variability. Satellite observations show that on average over the tropical belt, when deep convection is more aggregated, the free troposphere is drier, the deep convective cloud coverage is less extensive, and the emission of heat to space is increased; an enhanced aggregation of deep convection is thus associated with a radiative cooling of the tropics. An increase of the tropical‐mean lower‐tropospheric stability is also coincident with a radiative cooling of the tropics, primarily because it is associated with more marine low clouds and an enhanced reflection of solar radiation, although the free‐tropospheric drying also contributes to the cooling. The contributions of convective aggregation and lower‐tropospheric stability to the modulation of the radiation budget are complementary, largely independent of each other, and equally strong. Together, they account for more than sixty percent of the variance of the tropical radiation budget. Satellite observations are thus consistent with the suggestion from modeling studies that the spatial organization of deep convection substantially influences the radiative balance of the Earth. This emphasizes the importance of understanding the factors that control convective organization and lower‐tropospheric stability variations, and the need to monitor their changes as the climate warms.

The potentially significant role of the biogenic trace gas dimethylsulfide (DMS) in determining the Earth's radiation budget makes it necessary to accurately reproduce seawater DMS distribution and quantify its global flux across the sea/air interface. Following a threefold increase of data (from 15,000 to over 47,000) in the global surface ocean DMS database over the last decade, new global monthly climatologies of surface ocean DMS concentration and sea-to-air emission flux are presented as updates of those constructed 10 years ago. Interpolation/extrapolation techniques were applied to project the discrete concentration data onto a first guess field based on Longhurst's biogeographic provinces. Further objective analysis allowed us to obtain the final monthly maps. The new climatology projects DMS concentrations typically in the range of 1–7 nM, with higher levels occurring in the high latitudes, and with a general trend toward increasing concentration in summer. The increased size and distribution of the observations in the DMS database have produced in the new climatology substantially lower DMS concentrations in the polar latitudes and generally higher DMS concentrations in regions that were severely undersampled 10 years ago, such as the southern Indian Ocean. Using the new DMS concentration climatology in conjunction with state-of-the-art parameterizations for the sea/air gas transfer velocity and climatological wind fields, we estimate that 28.1 (17.6–34.4) Tg of sulfur are transferred from the oceans into the atmosphere annually in the form of DMS. This represents a global emission increase of 17% with respect to the equivalent calculation using the previous climatology. This new DMS climatology represents a valuable tool for atmospheric chemistry, climate, and Earth System models.

Satellite-derived land surface data in 1980 and 2010 were used to represent land use and land cover (LULC) changes caused by the rapid economic development and human activities that have occurred over the past few decades in East Asia and China. The effects of LULC changes on the radiation budget and 2-m surface air temperature (SAT) were explored for the period using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The mosaic approach, which considers the N-most abundant land use types within a model grid cell (here, N = 3) and precisely describes the subgrid-scale LULC changes, was adopted in the integrations. The impacts of LULC changes based on two 36-year integrations showed that SAT generally decreased, with the sole exception being over eastern China, resulting in decreased SAT in China (−0.062 °C) and East Asian land areas (EAL, −0.061 °C). The LULC changes induced changes in albedo, which influenced the radiation budget. The radiative forcings at the top of the atmosphere were −0.56 W m−2 across the whole of China, and −0.50 W m−2 over EAL. Meanwhile, the altered roughness length mainly influenced near-surface wind speeds, large-scale and upward moisture fluxes, latent heat fluxes, and cloud fractions at different altitudes. Though the impacts caused by the LULC changes were generally smaller at regional scales, the values at local scales were much stronger.

Previous studies have reported air pollution‐radiation interactions in the urban boundary layer (UBL), but vertical gradient variations in the radiation budget and heat flux under air pollution conditions are relatively sparse. In this study, based on gradient observations from the Beijing 325 m meteorological tower in December 2015, the characteristics of near‐surface radiation balance and energy budget at three levels under different pollution conditions were comparatively investigated. Relative to clean days, both downward and upward shortwave radiation (DSR and USR) dropped during daytime, while downward and upward longwave radiation (DLR and ULR) enhanced during nighttime on heavily polluted days, showing that with evaluated height, the drop magnitudes of DSR and USR decreased, while the enhancement magnitude of DLR (ULR) decreased (increased). The combined effects of four radiation components significantly induced the reduction in net radiation (Rn) on polluted days, leading to the near‐surface energy budget change. In addition, the monthly averaged anthropogenic heat flux (Qf) was estimated to quantitatively calculate the heat storage (G) term in the surface energy budget. During daytime, compared to the clean episodes, the sensible heat flux (H) was reduced more than Rn in the whole near‐surface UBL during heavy polluted episodes, resulting in smaller H/(Rn + Qf) and larger G/(Rn + Qf). Finally, we revealed that weak thermal forcing effects caused by insufficient availability of net radiation energy at the surface and weak dynamic motion associated with weak winds were both responsible for the larger reduction (increase) in H (G) during pollution episodes in the whole near‐surface UBL. The land surface albedo product of visible infrared imaging radiometer suite (VIIRS) in National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s operational system provides real-time, global daily mean surface albedo, which is a required parameter in the estimation of the daily shortwave net radiation budget. The global gridded VIIRS albedo product is derived from the level-2 granule surface albedo product, which is generated using a Direct Estimation Method. Special gridding and compositing algorithms were developed for aggregating the granular albedo data into the gridded albedo product. This paper describes the design and evaluation of the NOAA VIIRS gridded daily surface albedo product. The cloudy condition, retrieval path, retrieval method, and observing geometry are the criteria in deciding the priority order in the composition processing. The proposed albedo product possesses a complete spatial coverage over global land and ice surface and provides a timely response to surface dynamics. The validation of satellite retrieved daily mean albedo against ground counterparts over a series of well-maintained networks demonstrates the reliability of the composed albedo considering the interference of the seasonal surface heterogeneity conditions around each site. The inter-comparison between the S-NPP and NOAA-20 VIIRS albedo shows good agreement, except for a minor bias related to solar/view angle differences. The cross-comparison between VIIRS albedo and MODIS albedo shows good consistency with some deviations related to the controversy between their upstream snow mask. • Daily global gap-free albedo product from VIIRS operational at NOAA. • Direct estimation of albedo using clear-sky observations. • Comprehensive validation with in-situ observations indicates good product quality. • Major sources of product uncertainty and their mitigation are discussed. • Products from SNPP and NOAA-20 are highly consistent. Nitrogen (N) has been linked to different ecosystem processes, and retrieving this important foliar biochemical constituent from remote sensing observations is of widespread interest. Since N is not explicitly represented in physically based radiative transfer models, empirical methods have been used as an alternative. The spectral bands selected during the calibration of empirical methods have been interpreted in the context of light-N interactions and, consequently, ecosystem function. The low amount of leaves on shrubs and their sparse distribution in drylands create an environment, in which the canopy structure and the bright background soil play an important role in the canopy total radiation budget. In this paper, we examine the assumption that removing the impact of canopy structure and soil will result in improved N retrieval using the empirical methods. We report the inconsistencies in the selection of spectral bands among the empirical approaches. Moreover, these methods are sensitive to the scale of the study and band transformations. Using the generalized theory of canopy spectral invariants, we found that at the canopy scale, a combination of canopy structure and soil dominates the total canopy radiation. At the plot scale, soil contributes up to 95% of the total reflectance. Correction for these two confounding factors leads to no correlation between N and vegetation reflectance at both scales. We conclude that while cross-validated predictive models may be statistically achievable, caution should be taken when interpreting their results in the context of N-light interactions and ecosystem function. Measurements (2012–2014) of black carbon (BC) concentration in the surface air in the region of Tiksi International Hydrometeorological Observatory, located near the delta of the Lena River, are analyzed. Variations in the BC concentration with different magnitudes and durations are revealed. Anomalous (larger than 1000 ng/m3) peaks of BC concentration are shown to be rarely encountered, predominately in the warm season of the year (May–September), for no longer than two days. The longest episodes of high BC concentration are associated with long-range atmospheric transport of wildfire products. During such episodes, the air temperature and radiation budget significantly change in the surface atmosphere. The increases in the surface air temperature on days when smoke aerosol comes from nearby fires in July may reach 10°C (at the climatic norm 10–11°C). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Land skin temperature (Ts) is directly influenced by surface energy balance, in particular, radiative energy, which can be linked to model’s representation of radiative effects of hydrometeors in the atmosphere. This link is inferred by examining the changes of geographical distribution and seasonal cycle of surface radiation, surface turbulent fluxes and Ts between a pair of 140 years sensitivity experiments under 1% per year increase of atmospheric CO _2 . One is with radiative effects of falling ice (snow) hydrometeors on (SON) and the other off (NOS) using CESM1-CAM5 and the results are compared with CMIP5 models without these effects. For boreal winter, NOS relative to SON simulates less surface downward longwave and net flux (∼10–15 W m ^−2 ), resulting in colder Ts (∼2–3 K colder), over mid- and high latitudes, but more solar radiative flux, resulting in warmer Ts (∼1–3 K), over subtropical and tropical land. These differences between NOS and SON are amplified as the surface and the atmosphere become warmer. The results from CMIP5 ensemble generally match with those of NOS. Temporal correlation analysis indicates that the linkage between Ts and falling ice hydrometeor changes is through one between Ts and downward longwave and net fluxes at high latitudes, but strongly weakened by shortwave changes at low latitudes (and boreal summer). Relative to SON, land skin temperatures in NOS and CMIP5 are underestimated throughout the seasonal cycle but only slightly in summer.

The anticipated climate change during the next decades is posing crucial challenges to ecosystems. In order to decrease the vulnerability of forests, introducing tree species’ mixtures are a viable strategy, with deep-rooting native Silver fir (Abies alba) being a primary candidate for admixture into current pure stands of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) especially in mountainous areas. Such a change in forest structure also has effects on the regional scale, which, however, have been seldomly quantified. Therefore, we measured and modeled radiative balance and air chemistry impacts of admixing Silver fir to European beech stands, including changes in biogenic volatile organic compound emissions. An increased fraction of Silver fir caused a smaller albedo and a (simulated) larger evapotranspiration, leading to a dryer and warmer forest. While isoprene emission was negligible for both species, sesquiterpene and monoterpene emissions were larger for fir than for beech. From these differences, we derived that ozone concentration as well as secondary organic aerosols and cloud condensation nuclei would increase regionally. Overall, we demonstrated that even a relatively mild scenario of tree species change will alter the energy balance and air quality in a way that could potentially influence the climate on a landscape scale.

The Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) instruments have enabled the generation of a multi-decadal Earth radiation budget (ERB) climate data record (CDR) at the top of the Earth’s atmosphere, within the atmosphere, and at the Earth’s surface. Six CERES instruments have been launched over the course of twenty years, starting in 1999. To seamlessly continue the data record into the future, there is a need to radiometrically scale observations from newly launched instruments to observations from the existing data record. In this work, we describe a methodology to place the CERES Flight Model (FM) 5 instrument on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) spacecraft on the same radiometric scale as the FM3 instrument on the Aqua spacecraft. We determine the required magnitude of radiometric scaling by using spatially and temporally matched observations from these two instruments and describe the process to radiometrically scale SNPP/FM5 to Aqua/FM3 through the instrument spectral response functions. We also present validation results after application of this radiometric scaling and demonstrate the long-term consistency of the SNPP/FM5 record in comparison with the CERES instruments on Aqua and Terra.

The Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) Energy Balanced and Filled (EBAF) data product uses a diurnal correction methodology to produce a shortwave (SW) top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiative flux time series that accounts for diurnal cycle changes between CERES observation times while ensuring that the stability of the EBAF record is tied as closely as possible to CERES instrument calibration stability. The current EBAF Ed4.1 data product combines observations from Terra and Aqua after July 2002. However, the Terra satellite will start to drift in Mean Local Time (MLT) in early 2021, and Aqua’s MLT will start to drift in 2022. To ensure the EBAF record remains temporally stable, we explore the feasibility of using only CERES instruments from afternoon satellite orbits with a tight 1330 MLT after July 2002. We test this approach by directly comparing SW TOA fluxes generated after applying diurnal corrections to Aqua-only and to Terra + Aqua for 07/2002–06/2019. We find that global climatological mean SW TOA fluxes for these two cases are within 0.01 Wm−2 and the trend of the difference is < is 0.03 Wm−2 per decade.

Satellite-derived estimates of downward surface shortwave radiation (SSR) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) are a part of the surface radiation budget, an essential climate variable (ECV) required by climate and vegetation models. Ground measurements are insufficient for generating long-term, global measurements of surface radiation, primarily due to spatial limitations; however, remotely sensed Earth observations offer freely available, multi-day, global coverage of radiance that can be used to derive SSR and PAR estimates. Satellite-derived SSR and PAR estimates are generated by computing the radiative transfer inversion of top-of-atmosphere (TOA) measurements, and require ancillary data on the atmospheric condition. To reduce computational costs, often the radiative transfer calculations are done offline and large look-up tables (LUTs) are generated to derive estimates more quickly. Recently studies have begun exploring the use of machine-learning techniques, such as neural networks, to try to improve computational efficiency. Here, nine machine-learning methods were tested to model SSR and PAR using minimal input data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) observations at 1 km spatial resolution. The aim was to reduce the input data requirements to create the most robust model possible. The bootstrap aggregated decision tree (Bagged Tree), Gaussian Process Regression, and Neural Network yielded the best results with minimal training data requirements: an R 2 of 0.77, 0.78, and 0.78 respectively, a bias of 0 ± 6, 0 ± 6, and 0 ± 5 W / m 2 , and an RMSE of 140 ± 7, 135 ± 8, and 138 ± 7 W / m 2 , respectively, for all-sky condition total surface shortwave radiation and viewing angles less than 55°. Viewing angles above 55° were excluded because the residual analysis showed exponential error growth above 55°. A simple, robust model for estimating SSR and PAR using machine-learning methods is useful for a variety of climate system studies. Future studies may focus on developing high temporal resolution direct and diffuse estimates of SSR and PAR as most current models estimate only total SSR or PAR.
