Intercalation compounds represent a unique class of materials that can be anisotropic (1D and 2D-based topology) or isotropic (3D) through their guest/host superlattice repetitive organisation. Intercalation refers to the reversible introduction of guest species with variable natures into a crystalline host lattice. Different host lattice structures have been used for the preparation of intercalation compounds, and many examples are produced by exploiting the flexibility and the ability of 2D-based hosts to accommodate different guest species, ranging from ions to complex molecules. This reaction is then carried out to allow systematic control and fine tuning of the final properties of the derived compounds, thus allowing them to be used for various applications. This review mainly focuses on the recent applications of intercalation layered compounds (ILCs) based on layered clays, zirconium phosphates, layered double hydroxides and graphene as heterogeneous catalysts, for environmental and health purposes, aiming at collecting and discussing how intercalation processes can be exploited for the selected applications. Herein, initially, we present a general overview of the global financial support for chemistry devoted to materials science, specifically intercalation layered compounds (ILCs). Subsequently, the strategies to synthesise these host structures and the corresponding guest-host hybrid assemblies are exemplified on the basis of some families of materials, including pillared clays (PILCs), porous clay heterostructures (PCHs), zirconium phosphate (ZrP), layered double hydroxides (LDHs), graphite intercalation compounds (GICs), graphene-based materials, and MXenes. Additionally, a non-exhaustive survey on their possible application in the field of energy through electrochemical storage, mostly as electrode materials but also as electrolyte additives, is presented, including lithium technologies based on lithium ion batteries (LIBs), and beyond LiBs with a focus on possible alternatives such XIBs (X = Na (NIB), K (KIB), Al (AIB), Zn (ZIB), and Cl (CIB)), reversible Mg batteries (RMBs), dual-ion batteries (DIBs), Zn-air and Zn-sulphur batteries and supercapacitors as well as their relevance in other fields related to (opto)electronics. This article is a critical review on layered hybrid organic-inorganic functional structures. We specially discuss a series of results concerning the design of magnetic and multiproperty systems derived from hybridization of layered transition metal hydroxides. A series of hybrid materials showing original magnetic properties are reviewed, which were prepared by functionalization of layered simple hydroxides (LSH) of the general formula M2(OH)3A (M=Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, … and A=NO3-, OAc-, alkylcarboxylates, peptides, metal complexes…). To make the point on this vast family of hybrid compounds, we present first the work investigating the mechanism of interaction and the structural factors influencing the magnetic properties of hybrid materials based on LSH. Then, we detail how even more complex anions can be immobilized and grafted into the interlamellar space giving rise to new functionalities. These systems are very good models for understanding the correlations between the structure of hybrid systems and the physical properties brought by the inorganic host and by the molecular moieties grafted onto the inorganic metal network. The interface between the organic and inorganic components, i.e. chemical bonding, charge density, or local pressure, is essential for the control of the properties of multifunctional hybrid systems. Some conclusions are drawn on the future of this approach, useful for developing new two-dimensional functional systems.

This article discusses the possibility of controlling physical properties through chemical doping in multiferroic compounds. It focuses on a new class of hexagonal rare earth ferrite perovskite compounds, specifically LuFeO3, which exhibits both ferroelectric and weak ferromagnetic orderings. The researchers used an ethylene glycol based sol-gel synthesis procedure to prepare Sc-doped hexagonal lutetium ferrite powders and analyzed the crystal and magnetic structure transitions through XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and magnetization measurements. The results showed that the desired phase composition, magnetic, and electric properties can be optimized through doping content and sintering temperature. A peptide-based metal-organic framework (MOF), a metal peptide framework (MPF), constructed from an oligovaline peptide family is described. The MPFs are stable and have some internal porosity, which has made them a promising prototype for the further development of MPFs.

Research has been conducted on the transition metal complexes, terpy-nitrony-nitroxide and terpy-imino-nitroxide. The preparation of these complexes has been carried out and the results are reported.

Two new one-dimensional nickel(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized. The two complexes are similar and may be described as one-dimensional with double-azido-bridged ligands in end-to-end and end-on coordination alternatively, while the end-on moiety is almost identical for the two complexes, the end-to-end moiety is different in each structure.

The photochemical formation of ferrimagnetic chains from a pair of manganese complexes a and b of bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonato)manganese(II) coordinated with diazodi(4-pyridyl)methane in the cis and trans arrangements as repeating units was described. The two isomeric manganese derivatives were prepared individually and were found to have helical and zigzag chain structures. Irradiation of the dilute paramagnetic manganese complexes transformed the diazo groups to the triplet carbenes and formed extended ferrimagnetic chains containing photochemically generated 2p spins.

Diazodi-4-pyridylmethane, a new bridging ligand, has been prepared, with two functional groups, two pyridyl nitrogens and a diazo group. The crystal structure and magnetic properties of copper complex where interaction between the Cu(II) ion and the generated carbene was found to be ferromagnetic is reported. Temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and magnetic interaction in a 1:2 complex of Cu(hfac)2 with diazophenyl-4-pyridylmethane was also considered.

Transmetalation (Ni/Pt system), C(sub enolate)-metal bond formation (Pd/Au system) or O(sub enolate)-metal bond formation (Ni/Co system) may occur between nickel- or palladium-coordinated phosphino enolate ligands and metal electrophiles. This was gleaned from an investigation of the reactions of phosphino enolates toward electrophilic metal reagents. The crystal structures of Pd-Au and Ni-Co complexes, which reveal a different chemoselectivity of the enolate moiety, are described.

The transition metal coordination compounds are prepared from 1,9-bis(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)-3,7-dithia-5-nonanol (Hbdnol), which acts as a pentadentate ligand. IR, ligand field spectroscopy and EPR reveal that Ni(bdnol)Cl3 exhibits ferromagnetic intramolecular interaction and an antiferromagnetic ordering between adjacent dimers. The dinculear copper complex are antiferromagnetically coupled and are EPR silent at room temperature. The syntheses of Co(bdnol)(NCS)3, Zn2(bdnol)Cl(NCS)2, Cu2(bdnol)(NO3)3 and Cu2(Hbdnol)(NCS)2 are discussed.

The compound [BiCNIm]3[DyCl6] was synthesized from a nitrile‐functionalized imidazolium ionic liquid [BiCNIm][Cl] and DyCl3 ⋅ 6H2O in acetonitrile using solvothermal conditions. Structural characterization reveals that the Dy3+ ions are in a quasi‐regular octahedral environment, formed by six chloride anions. The magnetic study indicates that this mononuclear compound exhibits a Single Ion Magnet behaviour. This behaviour is compared to that of other mononuclear compounds containing Dy3+ ions in various octahedral environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The synthesis and characterization of a new carboxylato-bridged [Co.sup.II]thiophenedicarboxylic acid (TDC) compound is presented. The title compound has shown an unprecedented asymmetric tetradentate coordination mode of the carboxylate functions and the magnetic measurements have shown weak ferromagnetic interactions between the Co ions within the dimers.
