Context: Current lower-extremity return to sport testing primarily considers the physical status of an athlete; however, sport participation requires continuous cognitive dual-task engagement. Therefore, the purpose was to develop and evaluate the reliability of a visual-cognitive reactive (VCR) triple hop test that simulates the typical sport demand of combined online visual-cognitive processing and neuromuscular control to improve return to sport testing after lower-extremity injury. Design: Test–retest reliability. Methods: Twenty-one healthy college students (11 females, 23.5 [3.7] y, 1.73 [0.12] m, 73.0 [16.8] kg, Tegner Activity Scale 5.5 [1.1] points) participated. Participants performed a single-leg triple hop with and without a VCR dual task. The VCR task incorporated the FitLight system to challenge peripheral response inhibition and central working memory. Maximum hop distance, reaction time, cognitive errors, and physical errors were measured. Two identical testing visits were separated by 12 to 17 days (14 [1] d). Results: Traditional triple hop (intraclass correlation coefficients: ICC(3,1) =.96 [.91–.99]; standard error of the measurement = 16.99 cm) and the VCR triple hop (intraclass correlation coefficients(3,1) =.92 [.82–.97]; standard error of the measurement = 24.10 cm) both demonstrated excellent reliability for the maximum hop distance, and moderate reliability for the VCR triple hop reaction time (intraclass correlation coefficients(3,1) =.62 [.09–.84]; standard error of the measurement = 0.09 s). On average, the VCR triple hop resulted in a hop distance deficit of 8.17% (36.4 [5.1] cm; P <.05, d = 0.55) relative to the traditional triple hop. Conclusions: Hop distance on the VCR triple hop had excellent test–retest reliability and induced a significant physical performance deficit when compared with the traditional triple hop assessment. Alterations in the reward and cognitive control systems are commonly observed among adolescents with internet dependence (ID), and this impairment is often accompanied by social dysfunctions, such as academic burnout. However, the intercorrelations among ID, reward, cognitive control processing, and learning burnout remain unclear. We recruited 1074 Chinese adolescents to investigate the complex interrelationships among these variables using network analysis. The resulting network revealed patterns that connected ID to the behavioral inhibition/activation system (BIS/BAS), self-control, and learning burnout; these results exhibited reasonable stability and test–retest consistency. Throughout the network, the node of BAS-drive was the critical influencing factor, and the node of self-control was the protection factor. In addition, several symptoms of learning burnout and ID were positively associated with sensitivity to punishment. As revealed by the network comparison test, the network constructed among internet dependent (ID) group differed from the network constructed among internet nondependent (IND) group not only in the edges between BIS and learning burnout but also in terms of the edges associated with learning burnout. In conclusion, this study provides insights into the complex mechanisms underlying ID among adolescents from the perspective of the network relationships between core influencing factors and negative consequences. Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to evaluate the effects of cognitively engaging Physical Activity (PA) interventions on Executive Function (EF) in children and adolescents. It examines how different intervention modalities, durations, frequencies, and session lengths influence these effects. Methods: We followed the PRISMA guidelines and searched PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Embase, and Web of Science for relevant studies. Studies were included if they were Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) focusing on PA with cognitive elements targeting EF in healthy children and adolescents. Data were extracted and effect sizes computed using Standardized Mean Differences (SMDs). Results: From an initial 1,635 articles, 23 studies with 2,857 participants were included. The overall effect of cognitively engaging PA on EF was significant (SMD = 0.32, 95% CI 0.14-0.51), with notable improvements in inhibitory control (SMD = 0.35) and working memory (SMD = 0.34). High heterogeneity was observed (I2 = 91.1%). Moderator analyses revealed that interventions lasting more than 6 weeks, with sessions over 20 min and conducted more than twice a week, were particularly effective. Conclusion: Cognitively engaging PA interventions positively impact EF in children and adolescents, particularly in inhibitory control. Effective interventions are characterized by longer duration, higher frequency, and extended session lengths. These findings underscore the importance of integrating cognitive challenges within PA programs to enhance EF, warranting future research and practical applications in educational and developmental settings. AbstractThe present study aims to develop and present a proof-of-concept for a stop signal task with effector-specificity and higher complexity. Sixteen participants performed a stop signal task developed for lower extremities using Fitlight System™. The effect of four different delays and two sessions on response time, stop signal reaction time and accuracy was assessed using two-way repeated-measures ANOVA. The reliability of outcomes was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients. There was a significant main effect of delay on all outcomes and an interaction of delay and session on accuracy. The reliability of outcomes was substantial with dependency on delays. Our preliminary findings suggest the feasibility of stop signal principles within more complex movements and provide an example for the development of further tests in sports context. Background: Neurodevelopmental performance tasks are often separately analyzed, even when they tap into a similar construct. This may yield mixed findings for associations of an exposure-neurobehavioral outcome. We develop an item response theory (IRT) approach to integrate multiple task variables together to improve measurement precision of the underlying construct. We apply this approach to create an integrative measure of childhood inhibitory control, and study impacts of pre/post-natal lead exposure. Methods: Using data from a prospective cohort based in Mexico (N = 533), we created an inhibitory control scale that integrates accuracy and reaction time information from four inhibitory control tasks (Go/NoGo Letter, Go/NoGo Neutral, Go/NoGo Happy, Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS) Color-Word Interference Test, Condition 3). Using a generalized partial credit item response theory model, we estimated an inhibitory control index for each participant. We then assessed adjusted associations between umbilical cord blood and 4-year lead and childhood inhibitory control. We developed a resampling approach to incorporate error estimates from the inhibitory control variable to confirm the consistency of the lead-inhibitory control associations. We modeled time-varying associations of lead with each inhibitory control measure separately. Results: Participants had a median age of 9 years; 51.4% were males. Umbilical cord blood [-0.06 (95% CI: -0.11, -0.01)] and 4-year lead [-0.07 (95% CI: -0.12, -0.02)] were associated with inhibitory control index at 8–10 years. A resampling approach confirmed that 4-year lead was consistently associated with childhood inhibitory control index. Umbilical cord blood and 4-year lead were each associated with 3 out of 8 measures in separate models. Conclusion: This is the first application of IRT in environmental epidemiology to create a latent variable for inhibitory control that integrates accuracy and reaction time information from multiple, related tasks. This framework can be applied to other correlated neurobehavioral assessments or other phenotype data. Key messages: We are among the first to use item response theory to create an integrative measure of childhood inhibitory control, using multiple performance-tasks to improve measurement precision and construct validity. We combined information about speed and accuracy on each inhibitory control performance-task using theory driven considerations. We developed a resampling approach using plausible value imputation to account for measurement error of inhibitory control factor scores in estimating associations between lead exposures and inhibitory control. Background: Binge eating (BE) is associated with a range of cognitive control deficits related to impulsivity, including lower response inhibition, preference for immediate gratification, and maladaptive decision-making. The aim was to investigate whether impulsivity and BE may interact with the decision process and underlying brain activity in outpatients with overweight or obesity who are starting a treatment to achieve weight loss. Methods: A sample of 26 treatment-seeking outpatients with overweight or obesity was evaluated for impulsivity, BE, and temporal discounting rates. Impulsivity was measured with the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), according to which two groups were composed: high BIS and low BIS; BE was assessed with the eating disorders module of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM5—Research Version, according to which two groups were composed: with (BE group) or without BE (NBE group). Changes in subjective value of rewards were measured with the Temporal Discounting Task (TDt) where participants had to choice between sooner but smaller vs. later but larger monetary rewards. These choices were made in two differently delayed conditions ("Now" and "Not-now"). Brain rhythms were recorded through high-density electroencephalogram (hd-EEG) during the TDt. Results: Patients with BE reported more impulsive tendencies and perceived sooner rewards as more gratifying when both options were delayed (Not-now condition, p = 0.02). The reward choice in the TDt was accompanied by a general EEG alpha band desynchronization in parietal areas observed without differences between experimental conditions and patients groups. No effects were observed within the Now condition or in the other EEG bands. Conclusions: The tendency to favor immediate rewards may constitute an obstacle to adhering to treatment plans and achieving weight loss goals for outpatients with overweight or obesity. Clinicians are therefore encouraged to include psychological factors, such as impulsivity and dysfunctional eating behaviors, when designing weight loss programs. By addressing these psychological aspects, clinicians can better support patients in overcoming barriers to adherence and achieving sustainable weight loss. Traditional conflict-based cognitive assessment tools are highly behaviorally restrictive, which prevents them from capturing the dynamic nature of human cognition, such as the tendency to make error-correcting responses. The cognitive game Tunnel Runner measures interference control, response inhibition, and response-rule switching in a less restrictive manner than traditional cognitive assessment tools by giving players movement control after an initial response and encouraging error-correcting responses. Nevertheless, error-correcting responses remain unused due to a limited understanding of what they measure and how to use them. To facilitate the use of error-correcting responses to measure and understand human cognition, we developed theoretically-grounded measures of error-correcting responses in Tunnel Runner and assessed whether they reflected the same cognitive functions measured via initial responses. Furthermore, we evaluated the measurement potential of error-correcting responses. We found that initial and error-correcting responses similarly reflected players' response inhibition and interference control, but not their response-rule switching. Furthermore, combining the two response types increased the reliability of interference control and response inhibition measurements. Lastly, error-correcting responses showed the potential to measure response inhibition on their own. Activation parenting (AP) is a parenting construct derived from research and theory on paternal caregiving that includes behaviors that challenge children to approach novel situations, explore their environments, and take physical and socioemotional risks through a balance of encouragement and limit‐setting. Although components of AP have been linked to different domains of children's self‐regulation skills, comprehensive measures of AP and longitudinal research on families from low socioeconomic backgrounds are lacking. These limitations greatly constrain our understanding of the potential benefits of paternal AP for children's self‐regulation development, including the maturation of inhibitory control (IC) in early childhood. Thus, the present study tested associations between paternal AP at age 3 and growth in parent‐reported IC across ages 3–5 in a sample of low‐income, ethnically diverse fathers. Participating fathers (N = 171; 9% Black, 47% White, 8% Latinx, 61% not Latinx; mean household income = $25,145) and their children (51% female) were drawn from the Early Steps Multisite Study. AP during a clean‐up task at child age 3 years, but not a teaching task, was associated with greater growth in IC across ages 3–5 years. Implications of the current findings are presented for understanding associations between paternal AP and children's IC and broader self‐regulation skills with diverse samples of caregivers. Stress in surgeons is well-known for its negative impact on neurocognition and surgical performance. Surgeons commonly use music for stress reduction, but its specific effects on neurosurgeons remain unclear. This study aims to investigate how listening to music during microsurgery affects neurocognitive (NC) functions, subjective anxiety, and stress levels in neurosurgeons. Conducted in 2 phases, the pilot phase involved 23 neurosurgeons completing a survey and rating compositions based on ragas of North Indian/Hindustani classical music for suitability during surgery. Five excerpts were selected for the main phase, which involved 3 neurosurgeons performing 16 surgeries, 8 with and 8 without music. Data collection included presurgery assessments of sleep, caffeine intake, subjective stress levels, perceived complexity of the surgery that was to be performed, and NC tasks. Postsurgery subjective stress levels, actual complexity, and surgeon experiences with music were recorded. While there was a trend toward reduced stress and perceived complexity with music, statistical significance was not reached. NC tasks showed nonsignificant improvement with music, with a significant (at P < 0.001) speed-accuracy trade-off noted in response inhibition. Music appears to reduce subjective stress and task complexity, influencing neurocognition, particularly through speed-accuracy trade-offs. Full-length RIM1 and 2 are key components of the presynaptic active zone that ubiquitously control excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitter release. Here, we report that the function of the small RIM isoform RIM4, consisting of a single C2 domain, is strikingly different from that of the long isoforms. RIM4 is dispensable for neurotransmitter release but plays a postsynaptic, cell type-specific role in cerebellar Purkinje cells that is essential for normal motor function. In the absence of RIM4, Purkinje cell intrinsic firing is reduced and caffeine-sensitive, and dendritic integration of climbing fibre input is disturbed. Mice lacking RIM4, but not mice lacking RIM1/2, selectively in Purkinje cells exhibit a severe, hours-long paroxysmal dystonia. These episodes can also be induced by caffeine, ethanol or stress and closely resemble the deficits seen with mutations of the PNKD (paroxysmal non-kinesigenic dystonia) gene. Our data reveal essential postsynaptic functions of RIM proteins and show non-overlapping specialized functions of a small isoform despite high homology to a single domain in the full-length proteins. The subthalamic nucleus (STN) of the basal ganglia is key to the inhibitory control of movement. Consequently, it is a primary target for the neurosurgical treatment of movement disorders like Parkinson's disease, where modulating the STN via deep brain stimulation (DBS) can release excess inhibition of thalamocortical motor circuits. However, the STN is also anatomically connected to other thalamocortical circuits, including those underlying cognitive processes like attention. Notably, STN-DBS can also affect these processes. This suggests that the STN may also contribute to the inhibition of non-motor activity and that STN-DBS may cause changes to this inhibition. Here we tested this hypothesis in humans. We used a novel, wireless outpatient method to record intracranial local field potentials (LFP) from STN DBS implants during a visual attention task (Experiment 1, n = 12). These outpatient measurements allowed the simultaneous recording of high-density EEG, which we used to derive the steady state visual evoked potential (SSVEP), a well established neural index of visual attentional engagement. By relating STN activity to this neural marker of attention (instead of overt behaviour), we avoided possible confounds resulting from STN's motor role. We aimed to test whether the STN contributes to the momentary inhibition of the SSVEP caused by unexpected, distracting sounds. Furthermore, we causally tested this association in a second experiment, where we modulated STN via DBS across two sessions of the task, spaced at least 1 week apart (n = 21, no sample overlap with Experiment 1). The LFP recordings in Experiment 1 showed that reductions of the SSVEP after distracting sounds were preceded by sound-related γ-frequency (>60 Hz) activity in the STN. Trial-to-trial modelling further showed that this STN activity statistically mediated the sounds' suppressive effect on the SSVEP. In Experiment 2, modulating STN activity via DBS significantly reduced these sound-related SSVEP reductions. This provides causal evidence for the role of the STN in the surprise-related inhibition of attention. These findings suggest that the human STN contributes to the inhibition of attention, a non-motor process. This supports a domain-general view of the inhibitory role of the STN. Furthermore, these findings also suggest a potential mechanism underlying some of the known cognitive side effects of STN-DBS treatment, especially on attentional processes. Finally, our newly established outpatient LFP recording technique facilitates the testing of the role of subcortical nuclei in complex cognitive tasks, alongside recordings from the rest of the brain, and in much shorter time than peri-surgical recordings. Research is still needed to promote the development of structured art-based programs in prisons to strengthen socio-emotional skills. "Free Spirits" emerges as an innovative intervention that involves artistic and participatory co-creation dynamics in theater and music. A mixed-method quasi-experimental study was conducted in a Portuguese prison. Using self-report measures (emotional regulation, resilient coping) and a Go/No-Go paradigm (inhibitory control), quantitative data were collected pre- and posttest. A focus group was used to obtain participant's perceptions. Language control in bilingual speakers is thought to be implicated in effectively switching between languages, inhibiting the non‐intended language, and continuously monitoring what to say and what has been said. It has been a matter of controversy concerning whether language control operates in a comparable manner to cognitive control processes in non‐linguistic domains (domain‐general) or if it is exclusive to language processing (domain‐specific). As midfrontal theta oscillations have been considered as an index of cognitive control, examining whether a midfrontal theta effect is evident in tasks requiring bilingual control could bring new insights to the ongoing debate. To this end, we reanalysed the EEG data from two previous bilingual production studies where Dutch–English bilinguals named pictures based on colour cues. Specifically, we focused on three fundamental control processes in bilingual production: switching between languages, inhibition of the nontarget language, and monitoring of speech errors. Theta power increase was observed in switch trials compared to repeat trials, with a midfrontal scalp distribution. However, no theta power difference was observed in switch trials following a shorter sequence of same‐language trials compared to a longer sequence, suggesting a missing modulation of inhibitory control. Similarly, increased midfrontal theta power was observed when participants failed to switch to the intended language compared to correct responses. In humans and animals, high-frequency electrocutaneous stimulation (HFS) induces an "early long-term potentiation-like" sensitisation, where synaptic plasticity is underpinned by an ill-defined interaction between peripheral input and central modulatory processes. The relative contributions of these processes to the initial pain or nociceptive response likely differ from those that underpin development of the heightened response. To investigate the impact of HFS-induced hyperalgesia on pain and nociception in perception and neural terms, respectively, and to explore the impact of descending inhibitory pathway activation on the development of HFS-induced hyperalgesia, we performed parallel studies utilising identical stimuli to apply HFS concurrent to (1) a conditioned pain modulation paradigm during psychophysical testing in healthy humans or (2) a diffuse noxious inhibitory controls paradigm during in vivo electrophysiological recording of spinal neurones in healthy anaesthetised rats. High-frequency electrocutaneous stimulation alone induced enhanced perceptual responses to pinprick stimuli in cutaneous areas secondary to the area of electrical stimulation in humans and increased the excitability of spinal neurones which exhibited stimulus intensity-dependent coded responses to pinprick stimulation in a manner that tracked with human psychophysics, supporting their translational validity. Application of a distant noxious conditioning stimulus during HFS did not alter perceived primary or secondary hyperalgesia in humans or the development of primary or secondary neuronal hyperexcitability in rats compared with HFS alone, suggesting that, upon HFS-response initiation in a healthy nervous system, excitatory signalling escapes inhibitory control. Objective: Although personality traits are assumed to have biological/physiological foundations, research has yielded mixed evidence regarding the relationship between personality and physiological stress responses. Moreover, the field has often overlooked the contemporary neuroscience-based personality approach, known as the Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) of Personality, in stress research. Method: The present study examined the relationship between the revised RST's personality dimensions and heart rate and skin conductance level (SCL) in response to the Trier Social Stress Test in a sample of 61 healthy university students. Results: Piecewise latent growth curve analysis controlling for the participants' current life stress, smoking use, and caffeine intake revealed that individuals with higher behavioral inhibition exhibited higher physiological reactivity, whereas those with high reward sensitivity showed smaller heart rate reactivity. The behavioral disengagement facet of the behavioral inhibition scale was associated with reduced sympathetic arousal during the stress task. Additionally, reward interest was associated with a larger recovery of SCL. Conclusion: Results were generally in line with the revised theory. A single bout of exercise as well as exposure to a hypercapnic environment increases cerebral blood flow (CBF) and is an adaptation linked to a post-intervention executive function (EF) benefit. In the present investigation we sought to determine whether a transient reduction in CBF impairs EF. Accordingly, we employed 10-min -30 mmHg and -50 mmHg lower-body negative pressure (LBNP) interventions as well as a non-LBNP control condition. LBNP was employed because it sequesters blood in the lower legs and safely and reliably decreases CBF. Transcranial Doppler ultrasound was used to measure middle cerebral artery velocity (MCAv) to estimate CBF prior to and during LBNP conditions. As well, assessments of the inhibitory control component of EF (i.e., antipointing) were completed prior to (pre-) and immediately after (i.e., post-) each condition. Antipointing requires that an individual reach mirror-symmetrical to an exogenously presented target and is a task providing the resolution to detect subtle EF changes. Results showed that LBNP produced a 14% reduction in MCAv; however, null hypothesis, equivalence and Bayesian contrasts indicated that antipointing metrics did not vary from pre- to post-intervention, and LBNP-based changes in MCAv magnitude were not reliably correlated with antipointing planning times. Hence, a 10-min reduction in CBF did not impact the efficiency or effectiveness of an inhibitory control measure of EF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: The study aimed at examining the effectiveness of cognitive-motor dual-task and single-task cognitive training on executive and attention functions in participants over 65 years of age. Methods: The study comprised 68 participants. They were randomly assigned to dual-task cognitive-motor training (DTT), single-task cognitive training (STT) or a control group (C). The training program in all groups encompassed 4 weeks and consisted of three, 30-min meetings a week. Specialized software was designed for the purposes of the study. Both before and after the training, the cognitive functioning was assessed using: Color Trials Test, Ruff Figural Fluency Test, Wisconsin Sorting Card Test, Digit Span, Verbal Fluency Test, Stroop Color-Word Test. Results: After the cognitive-motor training, improvement was achieved in the control and inhibition of reactions. Moreover, after the cognitive training, improvements in abstract thinking and categorization were reported. Conclusion: Despite the small sample limitation, the preliminary result shows each form of the training supports a different aspect of executive functions but does not contribute to the improvement in attention. To enhance cellulose hydrolysis under high solid loadings, increasing the mixing intensity is often necessary, but this can lead to heightened product inhibition. In this work, the effect of mixing on high-solid cellulose hydrolysis was investigated. Through response surface optimization experiments, the optimal mixing intensities for 15%, 25%, and 35% (w/v) cellulose hydrolysis were obtained under different levels of product inhibition. A combined mixing optimization strategy was developed for different solid concentrations, aiming to enhance both the glucose yield and the conversion rate of microcrystalline cellulose and corn cobs. After optimization, the hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose resulted in glucose concentrations of 85 g/L, 130 g/L, and 167 g/L, corresponding to maximal conversion enhancements of 23%, 13%, and 8.6%, respectively. Similarly, the hydrolysis of corn cobs achieved glucose concentrations of 81 g/L, 124.6 g/L, and 140 g/L, with maximal conversion improvements of 4%, 5%, and 13%. Motivation in general, and social motivation in particular are important for interpersonal functioning in individuals with schizophrenia. Still, their roles after accounting for social cognition, are not well understood. The sample consisted of 147 patients with schizophrenia. General motivation was measured using the Behavioral inhibition/activation scale (BIS/BAS). Social motivation was measured by Passive social withdrawal and Active social avoidance items from PANSS. Interpersonal functioning was evaluated with Birchwood's Social Functioning Scale (SFS). We used Exploratory Graph Analysis for network estimation and community detection. Active social avoidance, passive social withdrawal, and social withdrawal/engagement (from SFS) were the most important nodes. In addition, three distinct communities were identified: Social cognition, Social motivation, and Interpersonal functioning. Notably, the BIS and BAS measures of general motivation were not part of any community. BAS showed stronger links to functioning than BIS. Passive social withdrawal was more strongly linked to interpersonal functioning than social cognitive abilities. Results suggest that social motivation, especially social approach, is more closely related to interpersonal functioning in schizophrenia than general motivation. In contrast, we found that general motivation was largely unrelated to social motivation. Cultural comparisons suggest that an understanding of other minds may develop sooner in independent versus interdependent settings, and vice versa for inhibitory control. From a western lens, this pattern might be considered paradoxical, since there is a robust positive relationship between theory of mind (ToM) and inhibitory control in western samples. In independent cultures, an emphasis on one's own mind offers a clear route to 'simulate' other minds, and inhibitory control may be required to set aside one's own perspective to represent the perspective of others. However, in interdependent cultures, social norms are considered the key catalyst for behaviour, and metacognitive reflection and/or suppression of one's own perspective may not be necessary. The cross‐cultural generalizability of the western developmental route to ToM is therefore questionable. The current study used an age‐matched cross‐sectional sample to contrast 56 Japanese and 56 Scottish 3–6‐year‐old's metacognition, ToM and inhibitory control skills. We replicated the expected cultural patterns for ToM (Scotland > Japan) and inhibitory control (Japan > Scotland). Supporting western developmental enrichment theories, we find that inhibitory control and metacognition predict theory of mind competence in Scotland. However, these variables cannot be used to predict Japanese ToM. This confirms that individualistic mechanisms do not capture the developmental mechanism underlying ToM in Japan, highlighting a bias in our understanding of ToM development. Executive functions (EFs) in early childhood are predictors of later developmental outcomes and school readiness. Much of the research on EFs and their psychosocial correlates has been conducted in high‐income, minority world countries, which represent a small and biased portion of children globally. The aim of this study is to examine EFs among children aged 3–5 years in two African countries, South Africa (SA) and The Gambia (GM), and to explore shared and distinct predictors of EFs in these settings. The SA sample (N = 243, 51.9% female) was recruited from low‐income communities within the Cape Town Metropolitan area. In GM, participants (N = 171, 49.7% female) were recruited from the rural West Kiang region. EFs, working memory (WM), inhibitory control (IC) and cognitive flexibility (CF), were measured using tablet‐based tasks. Associations between EF task performance and indicators of socioeconomic status (household assets, caregiver education) and family enrichment factors (enrichment activities, diversity of caregivers) were assessed. Participants in SA scored higher on all EF tasks, but children in both sites predominantly scored within the expected range for their age. There were no associations between EFs and household or familial variables in SA, except for a trend‐level association between caregiver education and CF. Patterns were similar in GM, where there was a trend‐level association between WM and enrichment activities but no other relationships. We challenge the postulation that children in low‐income settings have poorer EFs, simply due to lower socioeconomic status, but highlight the need to identify predictors of EFs in diverse, global settings. According to the heuristic model of emotion socialization by Eisenberg et al., parental reactions to children's negative emotions (RCNE) have an important role in this socialization process; however, its effects on children's social-emotional outcomes may be moderated by the children's temperament. This longitudinal study verified this proposition by testing maternal and paternal RCNE as predictors of preschoolers' behavioral adjustment and child inhibitory control as a moderator of these associations. Mothers and fathers of 113 Chinese children (M age = 57.41 months, SD = 7.16 months) reported on their RCNE and child inhibitory control at Time 1 (T1) and reported on child behavioral adjustment (i.e., externalizing problems, internalizing problems, and prosocial behaviors) both at T1 and 6 months later (Time 2, T2). Multiple linear regression analyses showed that after controlling for child behavioral adjustment at T1, child age, and paternal education level, (a) paternal supportive reactions negatively predicted child externalizing problems and positively predicted child prosocial behaviors, and (b) the associations between parental RCNE and child behavioral adjustment were moderated by child inhibitory control. Specifically, only for children low on inhibitory control, paternal supportive reactions negatively predicted child externalizing problems, and maternal supportive reactions positively predicted child prosocial behaviors. A growing body of research investigates the general possibility that the mere presence of a smartphone might negatively impact cognitive performance, with some researchers posing the "brain drain" hypothesis which posits that smartphone presence will impair working memory capacity and fluid intelligence, but not sustained attention and response inhibition. To assess the strength of evidence for the claim that the mere presence of a smartphone can negatively impact cognitive performance, this study reports a systematic review and six meta-analyses (k = 56, n = 7093). Across cognitive functions, only a single statistically significant pooled effect was found. Working memory capacity was negatively impacted by the mere presence of a smartphone, while results for the remaining cognitive functions produced null summary effects. The analysis also finds that there is substantial methodological heterogeneity and generally poor statistical power in the domain. Overall, while the current meta-analysis provides limited support for a negative albeit smaller than theorized brain drain effect due to the mere presence of a smartphone, given methodological concerns, the extent to which the current body of literature can support or refute the hypothesis is limited. Prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the startle reflex serves as a pre‐cognitive marker of sensorimotor gating, and its deficit may predict cognitive impairments. Startle reflex is modulated by many factors. Among them, stress has been a topic of interest, but its effects on both pre‐cognitive and cognitive variables continue to yield divergent results. This study aims to analyze the effect of acute stress on PPI of the startle reflex and cognitive function (working memory, attention, inhibition, and verbal fluency). Participants were exposed to the MAST stress induction protocol or a stress‐neutral task: stress group (n = 54) or control group (n = 54). Following stress induction, participants' startle responses were recorded, and cognition was assessed. The results revealed that participants in the stress group exhibited greater startle magnitude, lower PPI, and lower scores in working memory tests compared with the control group. Additionally, a correlation was found between working memory and PPI across all the participants, independent of stress group. These findings support the notion that after stress, both greater startle magnitude and diminished PPI could play an adaptive role by allowing for increased processing of stimuli potentially dangerous and stress‐related. Similarly, our results lend support to the hypothesis that lower PPI may be predictive of cognitive impairment. Considering the impact of stress on both pre‐cognitive (PPI) and cognitive (working memory) variables, we discuss the possibility that the effect of stress on PPI occurs through motivational priming and emphasize the relevance of considering stress in both basic and translational science. Our findings revealed that acute stress increased startle response magnitude, while reducing prepulse inhibition (PPI) and working memory scores. Although the relationships among acute stress, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), and cognitive function have been examined, whether CRF is related to behavioral and neuroelectric indices of inhibitory control following acute stress remains unknown. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the combined influence of acute stress and CRF on inhibitory control. Participants, aged 20–30 years, were stratified into the Higher‐Fit (n = 31) and the Lower‐Fit (n = 32) groups, and completed a Stroop task following the modified Maastricht Acute Stress Test (MAST) in the stress condition and the sham‐MAST in the non‐stress condition, during which electroencephalography was recorded. Behavioral (i.e., response time and accuracy) and neuroelectric (N2 and P3b components of the event‐related potential) outcomes of inhibitory control were obtained. While the Higher‐Fit group demonstrated shorter response times and higher accuracy than the Lower‐Fit group following both the MAST and the sham‐MAST, they also exhibited selective benefits of acute stress on inhibitory control performance (i.e., decreased response times and diminished interference scores). CRF‐dependent alterations in neuroelectric indices were also observed, with the Higher‐Fit group displaying smaller N2 and greater P3b amplitudes than the Lower‐Fit group following the sham‐MAST, and increased N2 and attenuated P3b amplitudes following the MAST. Collectively, these findings not only confirm the positive relationship between CRF and inhibitory control but also provide novel insights into the potential influence of CRF on inhibitory control and associated neuroelectric activity following acute stress. Distinct from previous research that analyzed the effects of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and acute stress on inhibitory control in isolation, our research innovatively examined the relationship between CRF and inhibitory control after acute stress. Our findings revealed that individuals with higher CRF not only inherently possess superior inhibitory control than those with lower CRF under non‐stress conditions but also demonstrate markedly enhanced performance after acute stress. This advancement in understanding the multifaceted relationship between CRF and inhibitory control under varying stress conditions paves the way for the development of targeted strategies to leverage CRF to optimize inhibitory control in stress‐prone environments. Objective: To explore the effects of real-life acute stress on cognitive inhibition and response inhibition in college students. Methods: Totally 40 interviewees in the National Postgraduate Entrance Examination were recruited and they were asked to complete the Flanker task and Go/Nogo dual-task immediately after the interview (stress condition) and 7 months after the interview (control condition) respectively. The current stress level was assessed with the Self-reported Stress Scale and State Anxiety Inventory. Results: The self-reported stress scores (P< 0.001), and state anxiety scores (P<0.01) were higher under stress condition than under control condition. In the Flanker task, the reaction time of the incongruent trials was faster under stress condition than under control condition, and the Flanker effect was lower under stress condition than under control condition (Ps <0.05). For the probe stimuli in the Go/Nogo dual task, the reaction time of Nogo-probes and probe Go/Nogo effect was higherunder stress condition than under control condition (Ps <0.05). The flanker task (Eriksen & Eriksen, Perception & Psychophysics, 16(1), 143-149, 1974) has been highly influential and widely used in studies of visual attention. Its simplicity has made it popular to include it in experimental software packages and online platforms. The spacing flanker task (SFT), in which the distance between the target and flankers varies, is useful for studying the distribution of attention across space as well as inhibitory control. Use of the SFT requires that the viewing environment (e.g., stimulus size and viewing distance) be controlled, which is a challenge for online delivery. We implement and evaluate an online version of the SFT that includes two calibration pretests to provide the necessary control. Test–retest and split-half reliability of the online version was compared with a laboratory version on measures of inhibitory control and measures of the distribution of attention across space. Analyses show that the online SFT is comparable to laboratory testing on all measures. Results also identify two measures with good test–retest reliability that hold promise for studying performance in the SFT: the mean flanker effect (ICC = 0.745) and RTs on incongruent trials across distances (ICC = 0.65–0.71). Dynamic cognitive psychometrics measures mental capacities based on the way behavior unfolds over time. It does so using models of psychological processes whose validity is grounded in research from experimental psychology and the neurosciences. However, these models can sometimes have undesirable measurement properties. We propose a "hybrid" modeling approach that achieves good measurement by blending process-based and descriptive components. We demonstrate the utility of this approach in the stop-signal paradigm, in which participants make a series of speeded choices, but occasionally are required to withhold their response when a "stop signal" occurs. The stop-signal paradigm is widely used to measure response inhibition based on a modeling framework that assumes a race between processes triggered by the choice and the stop stimuli. However, the key index of inhibition, the latency of the stop process (i.e., stop-signal reaction time), is not directly observable, and is poorly estimated when the choice and the stop runners are both modeled by psychologically realistic evidence-accumulation processes. We show that using a descriptive account of the stop process, while retaining a realistic account of the choice process, simultaneously enables good measurement of both stop-signal reaction time and the psychological factors that determine choice behavior. We show that this approach, when combined with hierarchical Bayesian estimation, is effective even in a complex choice task that requires participants to perform only a relatively modest number of test trials. Long-term effects of early, recurrent human exposure to general anaesthesia remain unknown. The Australasian Cystic Fibrosis Bronchoalveolar Lavage (ACFBAL) trial provided an opportunity to examine this issue in children randomly assigned in infancy to either repeated bronchoalveolar-lavage (BAL)-directed therapy with general anaesthesia or standard care with no planned lavages up to 5 years of age when all children received BAL-directed therapy under general anaesthesia. This multicentre, randomised, open-label phase 4 trial (CF-GAIN) used the original ACFBAL trial randomisation at 3·6 months (SD 1·6) to BAL-directed therapy or standard-care groups to assess the impact of general anaesthesia exposures over early childhood. Children who completed the ACFBAL trial, with a mean age of 5·1 (SD 0·18) years, received standardised neurobehavioural and health-related-quality-of-life assessment and brain MRI scans between Oct 8, 2013, and June 30, 2017, at a mean age of 12·8 (SD 1·7) years at three hospitals in Australia and one hospital in New Zealand. The primary outcome was a composite score of performance on a standardised, computer-based assessment of child attention, processing speed, and response inhibition skills (Conners Continuous Performance test, second edition). Secondary outcomes included intellectual function, other neurobehavioural measures, and brain imaging as an exploratory outcome. The trial was registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ACTRN 12613000057785) and is completed. At 2 years, the BAL-directed therapy group (n=52) and standard-care group (n=45) had a median of 2·0 (IQR 1·0–3·0) and 0·0 (0·0–0·0) exposures, respectively. At completion of the ACFBAL trial, the BAL-directed therapy group had a median of 6·0 (4·0–9·5) exposures and the standard-care group 2·0 (1·0–4·0) exposures. At CF-GAIN completion, the BAL-directed therapy group had a median of 10·0 (IQR 6·5–14·5) exposures and the standard-care group 4·0 (3·0–7·0) exposures. Cumulative general anaesthesia exposure time was not prospectively collected but, for those with complete cumulative exposure time data to the end of the ACFBAL trial, the median cumulative exposure time for the BAL-directed therapy group (n=29) was 180 (IQR 140–285) min and for the standard-care group (n=32) was 48 (30–122) min. The mean Conners Continuous Performance test, second edition composite score was 51 (SD 8·1) in BAL-directed therapy group and 53 (8·8) in the standard-care group; difference –1·7 (95% CI –5·2 to 1·7; p=0·32) with similar performance on other neurobehavioural measures, including measures of executive function, intellectual quotient scores, and brain imaging. Our findings suggest that repeated general anaesthesia exposure in young children with cystic fibrosis is not related to functional impairment in attention, intellectual quotient, executive function, or brain structure compared with a group with fewer and shorter cumulative anaesthesia durations. This study examined the immediate and sustained effects of acute exercise modalities and durations on inhibitory control including response inhibition and interference control. Fifty-nine young adults participated in three exercise interventions and a reading intervention. Three exercise interventions consisted of a 20-min moderate intensity continuous exercise (MICE), a 20-min high intensity interval exercise (HIIE) and a 10-min HIIE. Using a colour-word Stroop task and a Go/no-go task, interference control and response inhibition were assessed before the intervention (t0), immediately after the intervention (t1), and then at 30 min (t2) and 60 min (t3) after the intervention. During the Stroop task, the response time (RT) was significantly shorter for both congruent and incongruent trials immediately after 20-min HIIE compared to that before exercise, and this reduction lasted for 60 min. The improvement in the Stroop task can be maintained for 30 min after 20-min MICE. In addition, the 10-min HIIE intervention immediately reduced the RT of the incongruent trials. However, the Go/no-go results showed no significant change in task performance after the four interventions. The above findings suggest that when compared to MICE for the same exercise time, improvements in interference control were sustained longer and better following 20-min HIIE. In addition, HIIE for 20-min rather than shorter duration was best for both basic information processing and interference control performance. Objective: Drug use, considered a socially unacceptable habit across all human societies, has involved countless individuals, particularly from adolescence and youth to middle age. This study aimed to determine the role of stressful events and the behavioral brain system in addiction tendencies among the youth of Yasuj. Methods and Materials: This study was descriptive and correlational in nature. The statistical population included all young people aged 18 to 35 years in Yasuj in 2022. Based on the Krejcie and Morgan table (1987) and using multi-stage cluster random sampling, 384 young people from Yasuj were selected and studied. Data collection was conducted using the Holmes and Rahe Stressful Life Events Questionnaire (1960), the Behavioral Inhibition/Activation System by Carver and White (1994), and the Addiction Potential Scale by Weed and Butcher (1992). After data collection and extraction, the participants' scores were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient and the fitted values, with the help of SPSS-24 statistical software. Findings: The results of Pearson's correlation coefficient showed a significant positive relationship between stressful life events and addiction tendencies among the youth of Yasuj (P < 0.01). There was a significant negative relationship between the behavioral inhibition system and addiction tendencies among the youth of Yasuj (P < 0.01). There was a significant positive relationship between the behavioral activation system and addiction tendencies among the youth of Yasuj (P < 0.01). Conclusion: Based on the results, by identifying stressful life events and the behavioral activation system in young people, measures can be taken to prevent their tendency toward addiction. Introduction: Physical activity is known to enhance cognitive functioning across the lifespan, yet the effects of sedentary behaviors on cognitive functioning remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine how an acute daily bout of prolonged sitting influenced working memory, inhibitory control, and cerebral oxygenation (HbO2) in a sample of healthy young adults. Methods: Forty-one young adults (aged between 18-30 years of age) participated in an exploratory design intended to establish a control standard for determining how an acute 2-h bout of prolonged sitting influenced working memory, inhibitory control, and HbO2. The Flanker task, Simon task, and Delayed Match to Sample were utilized to assess inhibitory control and working memory, respectively, while functional near-infrared spectroscopy assessed HbO2. Participants were further subdivided into a physically active (Active) group and a physically inactive group (Inactive) based on self-reported physical activity participation. Paired sample t-tests were used to determine any changes in workingmemory, inhibitory control, and HbO2 frompre-to-post and between groups. Results: There were no differences in working memory or inhibitory control reaction time following prolonged sitting for the entire sample (p > 0.05) or between activity groups (p > 0.05). There was a significant reduction in Flanker accuracy post-prolonged sitting for both the congruent (p < 0.05) and incongruent (p < 0.05) conditions. For those in the Inactive group, there was no difference in HbO2 concentrations post-prolonged sitting. Those in the Active group exhibited a significant reduction in HbO2 during the Flanker Task following prolonged sitting (p < 0.05). Conclusions: An acute bout of daily prolonged sitting significantly reduced HbO2 in physically active young adults but not in inactive young adults. We recommend that future studies examining the effects of sedentary behaviors on microvasculature include an objective assessment of physical fitness and a direct measure of physical activity patterns and consider these values when assigning participants to the intervention condition. Background: The burden of childhood trauma (violence, injury/illness, loss) in low-resource settings is high, although the effect of trauma on children's mental and cognitive health is under-researched. Child gender may moderate the association between trauma and outcomes; boys are more likely to experience trauma, but girls are more likely to show distress following trauma. Methods: We draw on data from the Bachpan cohort (n = 888), a sample of mother-child dyads in rural Pakistan, to investigate these associations among 6-year-old children in a South Asian, low-resource setting. Mothers reported on children's lifetime exposure to 15 possible traumas and their current mental health. In addition, children were assessed for their verbal skills, working memory, and inhibitory control. We estimated trauma prevalence and used generalized estimating equations to test the association between number of traumatic events and child mental health and cognitive skills in the overall sample and by gender. Results: 90.5% of children experienced at least one trauma. The most common traumas were death of a loved one (47%) and hearing about war/terrorism on the TV/radio (48%). On average, boys experienced more traumas (M = 3.00) than girls (M = 2.67). Specifically, boys were more likely than girls to experience an injury or hospitalization (30% vs. 21%, p <.05) and to hear about war/terrorism on the TV/radio (52% vs. 43%, p <.05). Trauma was associated with increased mental health difficulties and increased anxiety scores. There was little evidence that trauma exposure was associated with child cognitive skills. The strength of association between trauma and outcomes was similar for boys and girls. Conclusions: Findings show that childhood trauma exposure is common in this setting and associated with worse mental health problems among young boys and girls. Background: The purpose of the current study was to assess the differences between children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and typically developing (TD) children in their performance of executive functions from working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility. Methods: We performed a systematical search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science for case control studies (published in English between January 1, 1950, and October 11, 2023) comparing the differences in the performance of executive functions between DLD and TD children. Results: Forty eligible studies were included in the present study (N  =  3,168 participants). In comparison with TD children, DLD children exhibited significantly poorer performances in all six verbal working memory tasks (backward digit recall task, SMD-1.4321, 95% CI-2.2692 to-0.5950; listening recall task, SMD-1.4469, 95% CI-1.7737 to-1.1202; counting recall task, SMD-0.9192, 95% CI-1.4089 to-0.4295; digit recall task, SMD-1.2321, 95% CI-1.4397 to-1.0244; word list recall task, SMD-1.1375, 95% CI-1.5579 to-0.7171; non-word recall task, SMD-1.5355, 95% CI-1.8122 to-1.2589). However, regarding inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility, the differences between DLD and TD children depended on specific circumstances. In subgroup analyses of all verbal working memory tasks, DLD children presented notably lower performance than TD children in both the monolingual English and monolingual non-English groups, and in both the preschooler and school-aged groups. Background: The revised Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (rRST) assumes the existence of three systems controlling motivation and behavior: the behavioral activation system (BAS), the behavioral inhibition system (BIS), and the fight-flight-freeze system (FFFS). This study aims to examine for the first time the features of BAS, BIS, and FFFS among karate players in comparison with athletes representing other sports disciplines (physical education students) and physically inactive people. The specific configuration of temperament traits and profiles characterizing karate players will also be found. Methods: The cross-sectional study was performed among male karate athletes and control groups (physically active and inactive men). The study used the modified Reinforcement Sensitivity Questionnaire (rRSQ) to measure BAS, BIS, and FFFS. Results: The ANOVA showed that both karate competitors KS and KK scored significantly higher in BAS than the sample of PI participants. In addition, KK athletes scored significantly lower in Freeze than in PI and KS groups. Research also suggests that KK athletes presented significantly lower overall scores in FFFS than PI individuals. Furthermore, the results of K-means cluster analysis indicated the existence of two distinct patterns of temperamental traits: (1) Cluster 1 suggests avoidance tendencies (high Flight and Freeze, and low BAS, BIS, and Fight levels); while (2) the Cluster 2 describes approach tendencies (high BIS, BAS and Fight scores, and low levels of Flight and Freeze). Significantly more KK athletes were included in Cluster 2 than in Cluster 1, compared to PI, PA, and KS samples. Conclusions: The research indicates that individuals engaged in karate, particularly those practicing Kyokushin karate, tend to exhibit a heightened sensitivity to rewards (high BAS). This finding holds significance for coaches and sports instructors, suggesting that motivating karate athletes through incentives is more effective, while the use of punishment should be minimized during training. Additionally, the study proposes that the practice of Kyokushin karate has the potential to significantly diminish the freezing response in threatening situations and enhance overall fear management by reducing levels of the Fight-Flight-Freeze System (FFFS). Consequently, the Kyokushin karate style may be considered more advantageous than the Karate Shotokan (KS) style in these aspects, despite both styles contributing to the improvement of BAS. Given that a higher BAS is linked to positive emotions, optimism, and happiness, karate training emerges as a form of health intervention, acting as a preventive measure against mental disorders and promoting overall well-being. Background: Micro-RNAs could provide great insights about the neuropathological mechanisms associated with osteoarthritis (OA) pain processing. Using the validated Montreal Induction of Rat Arthritis Testing (MIRAT) model, this study aimed to characterize neuroepigenetic markers susceptible to correlate with innovative pain functional phenotype and targeted neuropeptide alterations. Methods: Functional biomechanical, somatosensory sensitization (peripheral--via tactile paw withdrawal threshold; central--via response to mechanical temporal summation), and diffuse noxious inhibitory control (via conditioned pain modulation) alterations were assessed sequentially in OA (n = 12) and Naïve (n = 12) rats. Joint structural, targeted spinal neuropeptides and differential expression of spinal cord micro-RNAs analyses were conducted at the sacrifice (day (D) 56). Results: The MI-RAT model caused important structural damages (reaching 35.77% of cartilage surface) compared to the Naïve group (P < 0.001). This was concomitantly associated with nociceptive sensitization: ipsilateral weight shift to the contralateral hind limb (asymmetry index) from -55.61% ± 8.50% (D7) to -26.29% ± 8.50% (D35) (P < 0.0001); mechanical pain hypersensitivity was present as soon as D7 and persisting until D56 (P < 0.008); central sensitization was evident at D21 (P = 0.038); pain endogenous inhibitory control was distinguished with higher conditioned pain modulation rate (P < 0.05) at D7, D21, and D35 as a reflect of filtrated pain perception. Somatosensory profile alterations of OA rats were translated in a persistent elevation of pro-nociceptive neuropeptides substance P and bradykinin, along with an increased expression of spinal miR-181b (P = 0.029) at D56. Conclusion: The MI-RAT OA model is associated, not only with structural lesions and static weight-bearing alterations, but also with a somatosensory profile that encompasses pain centralized sensitization, associated to active endogenous inhibitory/facilitatory controls, and corresponding neuropeptidomic and neuroepigenetic alterations. This preliminary neuroepigenetic research confirms the crucial role of pain endogenous inhibitory control in the development of OA chronic pain (not only hypersensitivity) and validates the MI-RAT model for its study. The phenomenon of "the more targets, the higher probability" often occurs when people perform nonsymbolic probability judgment tasks. However, it remains unclear whether inhibitory control is needed to overcome this intuitive bias and whether the distance between the two probabilities moderates this process. We designed a probability judgment task with large and small distances and conducted two experiments. In Experiment 1 (n = 31), participants judged which box was more likely to get the target ball in the congruent task (more targets, higher probability) or the incongruent task (fewer targets, higher probability). Participants demonstrated an intuitive bias that was affected by numerical distance. In Experiment 2 (n = 33), we adopted the negative priming paradigm and found that participants required inhibitory control to overcome intuitive bias only in small-distance tasks. These results show that inhibitory control plays an essential role in overcoming intuitive bias in nonsymbolic probability judgment and that numerical distance has a moderating effect. The information‐seeking behaviour of adults focuses on optimizing the gathering and utilizing information to minimize search costs. In contrast, children tend to engage in information search during decision‐making with less consideration for costs. This difference in behaviour is believed to be linked to the development of executive functions. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the relationship between executive function and cost‐related information‐gathering behaviour. We assessed 56 children aged 4–6 years, involving three tasks: an information‐gathering task, an inhibitory control and a working memory task. In the information‐gathering task, children participated in both non‐cost and cost conditions, where they were given the opportunity to freely gather information or incur a cost to acquire information. The findings revealed that children with higher inhibitory control tended to gather less information when a cost was involved. In the current study, it was aimed to evaluate neurotrophic factor levels and their relationship with executive functions in high-risk children and adolescents (high-risk group) whose parents were diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD) but not affected by any psychiatric disease,and in order to determine possible vulnerability factors related to the disease. The study sample consisted of 32 high-risk group and 34 healthy controls. The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version-Turkish Adaptation (KSADS-PL-T), Stroop Test, Serial Digit Learning Test (SDLT) and Cancellation Test to evaluate executive functions were administered to all participants by the clinician.Serum levels of neurotrophic factors were measured using commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assay kits. Serum BDNF, NT-3, NT-4 levels and SDLT scores were significantly lower in the high-risk group for BD compared to the healthy control group. A moderate negative correlation was found between BDNF levels and the Cancellation Test scores in the high-risk group. In addition to these results, the odds ratios of age, NT-4, SDLT scores for being in the risky group in terms of BD diagnosis were 1.26, 0.99 and 0.86 respectively. This was a cross-sectional study. Causality between study results is therefore difficult to establish. The relatively small sample size of the study is another limitation. The receptor–receptor interaction (RRI) of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) leads to new functional entities that are conceptually distinct from the simple addition of signals mediated by the activation of the receptors that form the heteromers. Focusing on astrocytes, there is evidence for the existence of inhibitory and facilitatory RRIs, including the heteromers formed by the adenosine A2A and the dopamine D2 receptors, by A2A and the oxytocin receptor (OTR), and the D2-OTR heteromers. The possible involvement of these receptors in mosaicism has never been investigated in striatal astrocytes. By biophysical and functional approaches, we focused our attention on the existence of an A2A-D2-OTR high-order receptor complex and its role in modulating cytosolic calcium levels and endogenous glutamate release, when striatal astrocyte processes were stimulated with 4-aminopyridine. Functional data indicate a permissive role of OTR on dopamine signaling in the regulation of the glutamatergic transmission, and an inhibitory control mediated by A2A on both the D2-mediated signaling and on the OTR-facilitating effect on D2. Imaging biochemical and bioinformatic evidence confirmed the existence of the A2A-D2-OTR complex and its ternary structure in the membrane. In conclusion, the D2 receptor appears to be a hotspot in the control of the glutamate release from the astrocytic processes and may contribute to the regulation and integration of different neurotransmitter-mediated signaling in the striatum by the A2A-D2-OTR heterotrimers. Considering the possible selectivity of allosteric interventions on GPCRs organized as receptor mosaics, A2A-D2-OTR heterotrimers may offer selective pharmacological targets in neuropsychiatric disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Under total sleep deprivation, both inhibitory and motor control are impaired. However, how circadian rhythm sleep loss caused by irregular sleep pattern affects motor inhibition and execution in continuous actions remains unknown. This study utilized a pointing task to investigate the question over 30 days. During regular trials, participants were instructed to tap on a specified location, while in countermanding trials, they were required to countermand their current action. Additionally, there was a control group performed the same task following a normal 24-h rhythm. The results indicated that the decrease in accuracy and the increase in movement time in countermanding trials were more prominent in the shift work group. In contrast, there was no significant difference in reaction time between the two groups. Notably, the shift work group outperformed the control group in terms of movement time in regular trials and radial displacement in countermanding trials. Overall, these results show that circadian rhythm sleep loss predominantly affects inhibitory control, rather than motor control, underscoring the nuanced impacts of sleep disruption on differential aspects of cognitive and motor functions. Recent research suggests that socio-ecological factors such as dietary specialization and social complexity may be drivers of advanced cognitive skills among primates. Therefore, we assessed the ability of 12 black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi), a highly frugivorous platyrrhine primate with strong fission-fusion dynamics, to succeed in a serial visual reversal learning task. Using a two-alternative choice paradigm we first trained the animals to reliably choose a rewarded visual stimulus over a non-rewarded one. Upon reaching a pre-set learning criterion we then switched the reward values of the two stimuli and assessed if and how quickly the animals learned to reverse their choices, again to a pre-set learning criterion. This stimulus reversal procedure was then continued for a total of 80 sessions of 10 trials each. We found that the spider monkeys quickly learned to reliably discriminate between two simultaneously presented visual stimuli, that they succeeded in a visual reversal learning task, and that they displayed an increase in learning speed across consecutive reversals, suggesting that they are capable of serial reversal learning-set formation with visual cues. The fastest-learning individual completed five reversals within the 80 sessions. The spider monkeys outperformed most other primate and nonprimate mammal species tested so far on this type of cognitive task, including chimpanzees, with regard to their learning speed in both the initial learning task and in the first reversal task, suggesting a high degree of behavioral flexibility and inhibitory control. The present study investigates how heritage speakers conduct good-enough processing at the interface of home-language proficiency, cognitive skills (inhibitory control; working memory), and task types (acceptability judgement; self-paced reading). For this purpose, we employ two word-order patterns (verb-final vs. verb-initial) of two clausal constructions in Korean--suffixal passive and morphological causative--which contrast pertaining to the mapping between thematic roles and case-marking and the interpretive procedures driven by verbal morphology. We find that, while Korean heritage speakers demonstrate the same kind of acceptability-rating behaviour as monolingual Korean speakers do, their reading-time patterns are notably modulated by construction-specific properties, cognitive skills, and proficiency. This suggests a heritage speaker's ability and willingness to conduct both parsing routes, induced by linguistic cues in a non-dominant language, which are proportional to the computational complexity involving these cues. The role of serotonin in human behaviour is informed by approaches which allow in vivo modification of synaptic serotonin. However, characterising the effects of increased serotonin signalling in human models of behaviour is challenging given the limitations of available experimental probes, notably selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Here we use a now-accessible approach to directly increase synaptic serotonin in humans (a selective serotonin releasing agent) and examine its influence on domains of behaviour historically considered core functions of serotonin. Computational techniques, including reinforcement learning and drift diffusion modelling, explain participant behaviour at baseline and after week-long intervention. Reinforcement learning models reveal that increasing synaptic serotonin reduces sensitivity for outcomes in aversive contexts. Furthermore, increasing synaptic serotonin enhances behavioural inhibition, and shifts bias towards impulse control during exposure to aversive emotional probes. These effects are seen in the context of overall improvements in memory for neutral verbal information. Our findings highlight the direct effects of increasing synaptic serotonin on human behaviour, underlining its role in guiding decision-making within aversive and more neutral contexts, and offering implications for longstanding theories of central serotonin function. The aim of this study was to determine the role of duration of preschool attendance and the quality of teacher-child interactions in the executive functions development of preschoolers. The study involved 947 children (51% girls) age 4-7 years (M = 70.3 months; SD = 4.3). The number of children attending kindergarten for less than 1 year was 144; 268 children (28.3%) had attended for 1 to 2 years; and 535 children (56.5%) had attended for more than 2 years. The results showed that the children who attended a group with a high quality of teacher-child interaction for one or more years had better results on verbal work memory, and cognitive and physical inhibitory control than those who attended the same group over a shorter period. Recent advances in AI and intelligent vehicle technology hold the promise of revolutionizing mobility and transportation through advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Certain cognitive factors, such as impulsivity and inhibitory control have been shown to relate to risky driving behavior and on-road risk-taking. However, existing systems fail to leverage such factors in assistive driving technologies adequately. Varying the levels of these cognitive factors could influence the effectiveness and acceptance of ADAS interfaces. We demonstrate an approach for personalizing driver interaction via driver safety interfaces that are are triggered based on the inference of the driver's latent cognitive states from their driving behavior. To accomplish this, we adopt a data-driven approach and train a recurrent neural network to infer impulsivity and inhibitory control from recent driving behavior. The network is trained on a population of human drivers to infer impulsivity and inhibitory control from recent driving behavior. Using data collected from a high-fidelity vehicle motion simulator experiment, we demonstrate the ability to deduce these factors from driver behavior. We then use these inferred factors to determine instantly whether or not to engage a driver safety interface. This approach was evaluated using leave-one-out cross validation using actual human data. Our evaluations reveal that our personalized driver safety interface that captures the cognitive profile of the driver is more effective in influencing driver behavior in yellow light zones by reducing their inclination to run through them. Impulsivity-characterized executive function impairments have been hypothesized to represent mechanisms underlying the symptomology associated with gambling disorder (GD). Despite this, a clear profile of executive function within GD has yet to be established. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether executive function deficits represent a vulnerability marker for the disorder. This study assessed executive function performance within a GD sample compared to a sample of familial relatives and community controls. Using a family study methodology, a broad assessment of executive function was administered to analyze performance differences and their potential characterization by impulsivity between a sample of individuals meeting criteria for GD, their first-degree familial relatives, and a community control sample. Performance differences emerged regarding the capacity to delay gratification and inhibit automatic task-irrelevant responses between the GD and control samples. Results support the presence of impulsive choice and impulsive cognitive bias as components of the GD executive functioning profile. Similar difficulties inhibiting automatic attentional shifting were observed within the first-degree relative sample. Executive functioning within GD appears to be characterized by an impulsive pattern of behaviours/decisions but impacts processes differently. Evidence suggests that individuals diagnosed with GD demonstrate a statistically different capacity to delay gratification (e.g. a propensity towards smaller, more immediate rewards as opposed to larger delayed rewards) and inhibit cognitive biases (e.g. difficulty shifting attention away from task-irrelevant stimuli). This latter difference may represent a vulnerability marker of GD as preliminary evidence was provided for similar difficulties in a first-degree relative sample. Further research must replicate these findings and assess the impact of task modality, symptom severity, and comorbidity on the observation of executive functioning impairment. Background: The frontal cortex, relevant to global cognition and motor function, is recruited to compensate for mobility dysfunction in older adults. However, the in vivo neurophysiological (e.g., neurometabolites) underpinnings of the frontal cortex compensation for mobility dysfunction remain poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among frontal cortex neurophysiology, mobility, and cognition in healthy older adults. Methods: Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) quantified N-acetylasparate (tNAA) and total choline (tCho) concentrations and ratios in the frontal cortex in 21 older adults. Four inertial sensors recorded the Timed Up & Go (TUG) test. Cognition was assessed using the Flanker Inhibitory Control and Attention Test which requires conflict resolution because of response interference from flanking distractors during incongruent trials. Congruent trials require no conflict resolution. Results: tNAA concentration significantly related to the standing (p = 0.04) and sitting (p = 0.03) lean angles. tCho concentration (p = 0.04) and tCho ratio (p = 0.02) significantly related to TUG duration. tCho concentration significantly related to incongruent response time (p = 0.01). tCho ratio significantly related to both congruent (p = 0.009) and incongruent (p < 0.001) response times. Congruent (p = 0.02) and incongruent (p = 0.02) Flanker response times significantly related to TUG duration. Conclusions: Altered levels of frontal cortex neurometabolites are associated with both mobility and cognitive abilities in healthy older adults.
