The high-speed centrifugal pump plays a crucial role in fields such as aerospace and petrochemical industries, owing to its characteristics of elevated rotational speed and high head. During high-speed operation, the centrifugal pump is prone to cavitation, which alters the fluid flow state within the pump, leading to vibrations, noise, and a sudden decrease in pump head and efficiency. Simultaneously, the collapse of cavitation bubbles generates impact pressure that can damage the pump's internal flow components, significantly reducing its operational lifespan and causing severe consequences. Moreover, under constant-flow conditions, the absolute and relative velocities of the fluid at the impeller inlet are functions of the suction pipe diameter. Therefore, there exists an optimal value for the impeller inlet diameter to enhance the centrifugal pump's resistance to cavitation. Similarly, the different geometric and structural parameters of the inducer also influence the hydraulic performance of the centrifugal pump. The focus of this study is on the external characteristics and internal flow patterns of an optimized high-speed centrifugal pump. In this paper, the entire flow field of the model pump is numerically simulated using ANSYS CFX software. The performance and overall flow field state of the high-speed centrifugal pump under different impeller configurations and inlet diameters are explored. The influence of blade wrap angle and inlet diameter on the high-speed centrifugal pump is revealed, providing a theoretical basis for subsequent optimal design.

This study examines the climatic characteristics of 202 Jianghuai cyclones and their linkage with precipitation during the Meiyu period from 1961 to 2020. The results show that cyclones mainly originate from the eastern and western Hubei Province. Additionally, we explore the statistical characteristics of intensity, radius and their positive correlation. In studying the decadal variation of cyclones, we find a similar evolution between the cyclones and Meiyu precipitation. Therefore, we further investigate the correlation between the Jianghuai cyclones and the precipitation during the Meiyu period. There is a positive correlation coefficient of 0.77 between them. Notably, the percentage of precipitation affected by cyclone activities can reach up to 47 %. The anomalous increase in precipitation caused by cyclones north of 27° N can reach a maximum of 7 mm d−1. When a cyclone exists, a significant negative geopotential height anomaly at the 500 hPa level over Mongolia can be traced back to day −4. The abnormally enhanced WPSH (western Pacific subtropical high), southwesterly low-level jet and negative geopotential height are the dominant factors causing abnormal precipitation during Jianghuai cyclones. Before and after the cyclone develops, water vapor flux and divergence from low latitudes increase abnormally, providing sufficient water vapor conditions for the generation of cyclone precipitation.

Offshore wind turbine (OWT) support structures are exposed to the risk of fatigue damage and scour, and this risk can be effectively mitigated by installing structural control devices such as tuned mass dampers (TMDs). However, time-varying scour altering OWTs' dynamic characteristics has an impact on the TMD design and fatigue life, which has rarely been studied before. In this paper, a simplified modal model is used to investigate the influence of scour and a TMD on the fatigue life evaluation of a 5 MW OWT's support structure, and a traditional method and a newly developed optimization technique are both presented to obtain TMD parameters. This optimization technique aims at finding optimal parameters of the TMD which maximize the fatigue life of a hotspot at the mudline, and the effect of time-varying scour can be considered. This study assumes that the TMD operates in the fore–aft (FA) direction, while the vibration in the side–side (SS) direction is uncontrolled. Results show that scour can decrease the fatigue life by about 24.1 % and that the TMD can effectively suppress vibration and increase the fatigue life. When the scour depth reaches 1.3 times the pile diameter, the TMD with a mass ratio of 1 % can increase the fatigue life of an OWT's support structure by about 64.6 %. Further, it is found that the fatigue life can be extended by 25 % with the TMD optimized by the proposed optimization technique rather than using a traditional design method which does not take the change in dynamic characteristics into account.

Hybrid renewable power plants consisting of collocated wind, solar photovoltaic (PV), and lithium-ion battery storage connected behind a single grid connection can provide additional value to the owners and society in comparison to individual technology plants, such as those that are only wind or only PV. The hybrid power plants considered in this article are connected to the grid and share electrical infrastructure costs across different generation and storing technologies. In this article, we propose a methodology for sizing hybrid power plants as a nested-optimization problem: with an outer sizing optimization and an internal operation optimization. The outer sizing optimization maximizes the net present values over capital expenditures and compares it with standard designs that minimize the levelized cost of energy. The sizing problem formulation includes turbine selection (in terms of rated power, specific power, and hub height), a wind plant wake loss surrogate, simplified wind and PV degradation models, battery degradation, and operation optimization of an internal energy management system. The problem of outer sizing optimization is solved using a new parallel “efficient global optimization” algorithm. This new algorithm is a surrogate-based optimization method that ensures a minimal number of model evaluations but ensures a global scope in the optimization. The methodology presented in this article is available in an open-source tool called HyDesign. The hybrid sizing algorithm is applied for a peak power plant use case at different locations in India where renewable energy auctions impose a monetary penalty when energy is not supplied at peak hours. We compare the hybrid power plant sizing results when using two different objective functions: the levelized cost of energy (LCoE) or the relative net present value with respect to the total capital expenditure costs (NPV/CH). Battery storage is installed only on NPV/CH-based designs, while the hybrid design, including wind, solar, and battery, only occurs on the site with good wind resources. Wind turbine selection on this site prioritizes cheaper turbines with a lower hub height and lower rated power. The number of batteries replaced changes at the different sites, ranging between two or three units over the lifetime. A significant oversizing of the generation in comparison to the grid connection occurs on all NPV/CH-based designs. As expected LCoE-based designs are a single technology with no batteries.

During the operation of a water-jet pump, cavitation generates noise and vibration, causes surface erosion of the hydraulic components, and reduces the performance of the pump. Suppressing the cavitation is beneficial for improving the stability of the energy system of the water-jet pump. In order to investigate the mechanism of cavitation suppression and optimize the cavitation performance of the water-jet pump, the unsteady cavitation flow was studied by numerical simulation and experiment in this paper. Using high-speed photography technology on a closed test platform, the cavitation flow structures in the water-jet pump were captured, and the physical process of cavitation evolution was revealed. Based on this, in order to obtain the cavitation flow characteristics closely related to the cavitation performance, the cavitation flow in the impeller tip clearance was studied by numerical simulation, the vorticity variation rate in the tip clearance was analyzed, the effects of different cavitation conditions on the vorticity in the tip clearance were revealed. Additionally, this paper analyzed the pressure pulsation characteristics of the tip clearance under different cavitation conditions, and emphatically analyzed the influence of the cavitation flow on the tip clearance pressure pulsation.

A single ozone (O3) tracer mode was developed in this work to build the capability of the Goddard Earth Observing System model with Chemistry (GEOS-Chem) for rapid O3 simulation. The single O3 tracer simulation demonstrates consistency with the GEOS-Chem full chemistry simulation, with dramatic reductions in computational costs of approximately 91 %–94 %. The single O3 tracer simulation was combined with surface and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) O3 observations to investigate the changes in tropospheric O3 over eastern China in 2015–2020. The assimilated O3 concentrations demonstrate good agreement with O3 observations because surface O3 concentrations are 43.2, 41.8, and 42.1 ppb and tropospheric O3 columns are 37.1, 37.9, and 38.0 DU in the simulations, assimilations, and observations, respectively. The assimilations indicate rapid rises in surface O3 concentrations by 1.60 (spring), 1.16 (summer), 1.47 (autumn), and 0.80 ppb yr−1 (winter) over eastern China in 2015–2020, and the increasing trends are underestimated by the a priori simulations. More attention is suggested to the rapid increases in the O3 pollution in spring and autumn. We find stronger rises in tropospheric O3 columns over highly polluted areas due to larger local contributions, for example, 0.12 DU yr−1 (North China Plain) in contrast to −0.29 (Sichuan Basin) and −0.25 DU yr−1 (southern China). Furthermore, our analysis demonstrated noticeable contributions of the interannual variability in background O3 to the trends in surface O3 (particularly in the summer) and tropospheric O3 columns over eastern China in 2015–2020. This work highlights the importance of rapid simulations and assimilations to extend and interpret atmospheric O3 observations.

To explore the effect of various solvents extraction on the chemical property of shale, several lacustrine shale samples from the Chang 7 member of the Upper Triassic Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin, with maturities, from marginally mature (Tmax=439∘) to late mature (Tmax=456∘), were extracted by using acetone, tetrahydrofuran (THF), carbon disulfide (CS2), and benzene, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was employed to examine the functional groups of the samples before and after extraction with different solvents. The results showed that the extraction yield from shale with THF is significantly higher than that of other solvents, which may be related to the properties of the THF, including the aromatic structure, high boiling point, excellent Hansen solubility parameters, and strong polarity. The total organic carbon (TOC)-normalized yield of the mature sample J1 is significantly higher than that of other samples, which may be related to the fact that the J1 sample is at the peak of hydrocarbon generation; thus, a large number of kerogens were cracked into oil and bitumen. The aromaticity of organic matter (OM) increases with the increase in the maturity. The length of the aliphatic chains of the OM first increased with the increase in the maturity before late maturity stage and then decreased in late maturity stage. The extraction of shale samples with solvents hardly changes the length of aliphatic chains. Higher aromaticity is observed in shale residues after THF extractions than for other solvents (i.e., acetone, CS2, and benzene).

Tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations have declined dramatically over the United States (USA) and Europe in recent decades. Here we investigate the changes in surface and free-tropospheric O3 accompanied by NO2 changes over the USA and Europe in 2005–2020 by assimilating the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and U.S. Air Quality System (AQS) and European AirBase network O3 observations. The assimilated O3 concentrations demonstrate good agreement with O3 observations. Surface O3 concentrations are 41.4, 39.5, and 39.5 ppb (parts per billion; USA) and 35.3, 32.0, and 31.6 ppb (Europe) and tropospheric O3 columns are 35.5, 37.0, and 36.8 DU (USA) and 32.8, 35.3, and 36.4 DU (Europe) in the simulations, assimilations, and observations, respectively. We find overestimated summertime surface O3 concentrations over the USA and Europe, which resulted in a surface O3 maximum in July–August in the simulations, which is in contrast to April in the observations. Furthermore, our analysis exhibits limited changes in surface O3 concentrations; i.e., they decreased by −6 % over the USA and increased by 1.5 % over Europe in 2005–2020. The surface observation-based assimilations suggest insignificant changes in tropospheric O3 columns, namely −3.0 % (USA) and 1.5 % (Europe) in 2005–2020. While the OMI-based assimilations exhibit larger decreases in tropospheric O3 columns, with −12.0 % (USA) and −15.0 % (Europe) in 2005–2020, the decreases mainly occurred in 2010–2014, corresponding to the reported slower decline in free-tropospheric NO2 since 2010. Our analysis thus suggests that there are limited impacts of the decline in local emissions on tropospheric O3 over the USA and Europe and advises more efforts to evaluate the possible contributions of natural sources and transport. The discrepancy in assimilated tropospheric O3 columns further indicates the possible uncertainties in the derived tropospheric O3 changes.

This paper investigated the variable speed operation of a two-way contra-rotating axial flow pump–turbine in pump mode. When counter-rotating impellers operate at the same speed, a significant difference exists in the shaft power of the two impellers, thereby causing difficulties in motor selection. However, the same motor is required for both impellers in two-way pump–turbines. To solve this problem, this paper aims to determine the appropriate speed at which the two impellers operate with a similar shaft power. Accordingly, improving the performance of the tidal unit while enabling the basic functions of the pump–turbine is of considerable engineering and academic significance. An analysis of performance variations of the front and rear impellers in the pump mode reveals the law of power variation for each impeller at different speeds of the rear impeller. Under different flow conditions, shaft power of the rear impeller is found to be at least 31% higher compared with that of the front impeller. This result provides practical reference for further research on the operation of counter-rotating axial flow pump–turbine.

To examine the flow characteristics of particles in the vertical tube corresponding to different curvature radius bends, the particle velocity is measured at the Minimum Pressure Drop (MPD) using a high-speed Particle Image Velocimeter (PIV). This experiment explores the effects of particle flow characteristics at different curvature radius bends and their corresponding vertical tubes with pressure drop, power consumption, the intensity of particle fluctuation velocity, power spectrum and time-frequency characteristics. It is observed that the pressure drop and power consumption can be reduced with the help of a large curvature radius bend. Besides, the reduction of particle velocity in the large curvature radius bend and its corresponding vertical tube is less, and the particle possesses a larger intensity of fluctuation velocity in its corresponding vertical tube. The particles in the vertical tube corresponding to the large curvature radius bend lead to large peaks of the power spectrum in the low-frequency region, which is closely linked to the pressure drop. Eventually, the dynamics of particles in a vertical tube are revealed from the perspective of time-frequency analysis by using a continuous wavelet transform.

Roadside noise barriers (RNBs) are important urban infrastructures to ensure that cities remain liveable. However, the absence of accurate and large-scale geospatial data on RNBs has impeded the increasing progress of rational urban planning, sustainable cities, and healthy environments. To address this problem, this study creates a vectorized RNB dataset in China using street view imagery and a geospatial artificial intelligence framework. First, intensive sampling is performed on the road network of each city based on OpenStreetMap, which is used as the georeference for downloading 6×106 Baidu Street View (BSV) images. Furthermore, considering the prior geographic knowledge contained in street view images, convolutional neural networks incorporating image context information (IC-CNNs) based on an ensemble learning strategy are developed to detect RNBs from the BSV images. The RNB dataset presented by polylines is generated based on the identified RNB locations, with a total length of 2667.02 km in 222 cities. Last, the quality of the RNB dataset is evaluated from two perspectives, i.e., the detection accuracy and the completeness and positional accuracy. Specifically, based on a set of randomly selected samples containing 10 000 BSV images, four quantitative metrics are calculated, with an overall accuracy of 98.61 %, recall of 87.14 %, precision of 76.44 %, and F1 score of 81.44 %. A total length of 254.45 km of roads in different cities are manually surveyed using BSV images to evaluate the mileage deviation and overlap level between the generated and surveyed RNBs. The root mean squared error for the mileage deviation is 0.08 km, and the intersection over union for overlay level is 88.08 % ± 2.95 %. The evaluation results suggest that the generated RNB dataset is of high quality and can be applied as an accurate and reliable dataset for a variety of large-scale urban studies, such as estimating the regional solar photovoltaic potential, developing 3D urban models, and designing rational urban layouts. Besides that, the benchmark dataset of the labeled BSV images can also support more work on RNB detection, such as developing more advanced deep learning algorithms, fine-tuning the existing computer vision models, and analyzing geospatial scenes in BSV. The generated vectorized RNB dataset and the benchmark dataset of labeled BSV imagery are publicly available at https://doi.org/10.11888/Others.tpdc.271914 (Chen, 2021).

Reactivation of pre-existing structures and their influence on subsequent rift evolution have been extensively analysed in previous research on rifts that experienced multiple phases of rifting, where pre-existing structures were deemed to affect nucleation, density, strike orientation, and displacement of newly formed normal faults during later rifting stages. However, previous studies paid less attention to the extensional structures superimposing onto an earlier compressional background, leading to a lack of understanding of, e.g. the reactivation and growth pattern of pre-existing thrust faults as low-angle normal faults and the impact of pre-existing thrust faults on newly formed high-angle faults and subsequent rift structures. This study investigating the spatial relationship between intra-basement thrust and rift-related faults in the Enping sag, in the northern South China Sea, indicates that the rift system is built on the previously deformed basement with pervasive thrusting structures and that the low-angle major fault of the study area results from reactivation of intra-basement thrust faults. It also implies that the reactivation mode of basement thrust faults is dependent on the overall strain distribution across rifts, the scale of basement thrust faults, and the strain shadow zone. In addition, reactivated basement thrust faults influence the nucleation, dip, and displacement of nearby new faults, causing them to nucleate at or merge into downwards it, which is representative of the coupled and decoupled growth models of reactivated thrust faults and nearby new faults. This work not only provides insights into the growth pattern of rift-related faults interacting with reactivated low-angle faults but also has broader implications for how basement thrust faults influence rift structures, normal fault evolution, and syn-rift stratigraphy.

Previous studies have shown that microbially produced methane can be a dominant carbon source of lacustrine sedimentary macrofauna in eutrophic lakes, most likely through grazing on methane-oxidizing bacteria. Here we investigate the contributions of different carbon sources to macrofaunal biomass across five lakes in central Switzerland that range from oligotrophic to highly eutrophic. Macrofaunal communities change with trophic state, with chironomid larvae dominating oligotrophic and tubificid oligochaetes dominating eutrophic lake sediments. The 13C-isotopic data suggest that the average contribution of methane-derived carbon to the biomass of both macrofaunal groups is similar but consistently remains minor, ranging from only ∼1 % in the oligotrophic lake to at most 12 % in the eutrophic lakes. The remaining biomass can be explained by the assimilation of detritus-derived organic carbon. Low abundances of methane-cycling microorganisms in macrofaunal specimens, burrows, and surrounding sediment based on 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequences and copy numbers of genes involved in anaerobic and aerobic methane cycling (mcrA, pmoA) support the interpretation of isotopic data. Notably, 16S rRNA gene sequences of macrofauna, including macrofaunal guts, are highly divergent from those in tubes or sediments. Many macrofaunal specimens are dominated by a single 16S rRNA phylotype of Fusobacteria, α-, β-, γ-, or ε-Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, or Parcubacteria. This raises the question of whether dominant lake macrofauna live in so far uncharacterized relationships with detrital organic-matter-degrading bacterial endosymbionts.

Existing land-cover classification methods are usually based on adequate labelled data. But annotating enough training samples is hard and time-consuming. Therefore, we need to investigate how existing labelled data can help to increase land-cover classification. Source labelled data are proposed to be selected by calculating the target center of reliable target pseudo-labelled data for each class in this paper. Then we augment the training dataset with reliable target pesudo-labeled data and selected source labelled data to improve the quality and quantity of training dataset. We also investigate the amount of source labelled data that should be selected and the number of limited target labelled data that can produce good transfer learning performance. The UC Merced dataset is employed as the target dataset to evaluate the proposed approach while the NWPU-RESISC45 dataset is considered as the source labelled data. The experimental results show that selected source labelled data and reliable target pesudo-labeled data may improve the land-cover classification performance if selected source labelled data and reliable target pesudo-labeled data are augmented with the limited target labelled data respectively.

In order to improve the transportation efficiency and safety of the vertical hydraulic transport pipe, a new type of pipeline transport system with helical blade is proposed in this paper. Based on CFD-DEM coupling method, the liquid-solid two-phase flow characteristics are analyzed for the swirling pipes and no blade pipe. The study focuses on the effect of the different helix angles of helical blade pipes in terms of the distributions of fluid velocity, the fluid vorticity, the total pressure, the particle’s local concentration, the drag force and kinetic energy of particles. Subsequently, the transport efficiency is measured based on the starting speed of particles and the particle concentration, and the safety of the particle transportation is evaluated based on the flow structure and the kinetic energy of particles. It is found that the tangential velocities of the swirling pipes are clearly larger than that of the case of no blade pipe, and the swirling number decreases as the increasing of helix angle of helical blades within swirling pipe. As the decreasing of helix angle, the vorticity magnitude increases sequentially, and the vortex core structure of the flow field is gradually enriched. Meanwhile, the total pressures for the swirling pipes decrease rapidly after the fluid enters the helical blades region, reflecting the difference energy efficiency of the swirling pipes. Furthermore, the swirling pipe accelerates the starting speed of the particle, and then increases the particle concentration in the pipe while making the particle spatial flow structure better and the particle kinetic energy larger. In general, the swirling pipe makes the particle transportation more efficient and safe.

The colonization by a large number of sea animals, including penguins and seals, plays an important role in the nitrogen cycle of the tundra ecosystem in coastal Antarctica. However, little is known about the effects of sea animal colonization on ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB) communities involved in nitrogen transformations. In this study, we chose active seal colony tundra soils (SSs), penguin colony soils (PSs), adjacent penguin-lacking tundra soils (PLs), tundra marsh soils (MSs), and background tundra soils (BSs) to investigate the effects of sea animal colonization on the abundance, activity, and diversity of AOA and AOB in maritime Antarctica. Results indicated that AOB dominated over AOA in PS, SS, and PL, whereas AOB and AOA abundances were similar in MS and BS. Penguin or seal activities increased the abundance of soil AOB amoA genes but reduced the abundance of AOA amoA genes, leading to very large ratios (1.5×102 to 3.2×104) of AOB to AOA amoA copy numbers. Potential ammonia oxidation rates (PAORs) were significantly higher (P=0.02) in SS and PS than in PL, MS, and BS and were significantly positively correlated (P<0.001) with AOB amoA gene abundance. The predominance of AOB over AOA and their correlation with PAOR suggested that AOB play a more important role in the nitrification in animal colony soils. Sequence analysis for gene clones showed that AOA and AOB in tundra soils were from the Nitrososphaera and Nitrosospira lineages, respectively. Penguin or seal activities led to a predominance of AOA phylotypes related to Nitrososphaera cluster I and AOB phylotypes related to Nitrosospira clusters I and II but very low relative abundances in AOA phylotypes related to cluster II, and AOB phylotypes related to clusters III and IV. The differences in AOB and AOA community structures were closely related to soil biogeochemical processes under the disturbance of penguin or seal activities: soil C : N alteration and sufficient input of NH4+–N and phosphorus from animal excrements. The results significantly enhanced the understanding of ammonia-oxidizing microbial communities in the tundra environment of maritime Antarctica.

Even though human-induced eutrophication has severely impacted temperate lake ecosystems over the last centuries, the effects on total organic carbon (TOC) burial and mineralization are not well understood. We study these effects based on sedimentary records from the last 180 years in five Swiss lakes that differ in trophic state. We compare changes in TOC content and modeled TOC accumulation rates through time to historical data on algae blooms, water column anoxia, wastewater treatment, artificial lake ventilation, and water column phosphorus (P) concentrations. We furthermore investigate the effects of eutrophication on rates of microbial TOC mineralization and vertical distributions of microbial respiration reactions in sediments. Our results indicate that the history of eutrophication is well recorded in the sedimentary record. Overall, eutrophic lakes have higher TOC burial and accumulation rates, and subsurface peaks in TOC coincide with past periods of elevated P concentrations in lake water. Sediments of eutrophic lakes, moreover, have higher rates of total respiration and higher contributions of methanogenesis to total respiration. However, we found strong overlaps in the distributions of respiration reactions involving different electron acceptors in all lakes regardless of lake trophic state. Moreover, even though water column P concentrations have been reduced by ∼ 50 %–90 % since the period of peak eutrophication in the 1970s, TOC burial and accumulation rates have only decreased significantly, by ∼ 20 % and 25 %, in two of the five lakes. Hereby there is no clear relationship between the magnitude of the P concentration decrease and the change in TOC burial and accumulation rate. Instead, data from one eutrophic lake suggest that artificial ventilation, which has been used to prevent water column anoxia in this lake for 35 years, may help sustain high rates of TOC burial and accumulation in sediments despite water column P concentrations being strongly reduced. Our study provides novel insights into the influence of human activities in lakes and lake watersheds on lake sediments as carbon sinks and habitats for diverse microbial respiration processes.

Modeling thematic and spatial dynamic behaviors of Urban Heat Islands (UHIs) over time is crucial to understand the evolution of this phenomenon and the city micro-climate. Previous studies conceptualized that a UHI can only have a single life period with spatial behaviors (i.e. areal changes and topological transformations). However, a UHI can also appear and disappear periodically several times expressed by thematic and spatial integrated behaviors, which has not been established yet. Thus, this study conceptualizes each UHI as an object which has thematic and spatial behaviors simultaneously and proposes several graphs to depict periodic life-time transitions triggered by the behaviors. The model was implemented in an object-relational database, and air temperatures collected from a number of weather stations were interpolated as temperature images each hour for six weeks. Results indicated that the model could track the spatial and thematic evolution of UHIs through continuous time effectively, and also revealed the periodical patterns and abnormal cases of UHIs over a city.

Objective/Background: This report presents a superior mesenteric artery (SMA) embolism managed by percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy (PMT). Methods: A 61 year old woman diagnosed with SMA embolism was admitted. Emboli were found in the middle and distal segments of the SMA on abdominal computed tomography angiography. Under local anaesthesia, a 6 F Rotarex system was used to remove the emboli via left brachial artery access. Emboli were successfully removed and patency was restored to the SMA and its branches. Results: Post-operatively, the patient's symptoms were significantly relieved. No post-operative complications were observed and no discomfort was documented during follow-up. Conclusion: Endovascular treatment of SMA embolism using PMT is a feasible and alternative option. The urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon occurring in the urban areas or city-clusters is increasingly becoming a severe problem in the urbanization process. Previous research mainly rely on grid analysis techniques to study temperature data from images recorded at fixed time instants. The evolutionary process of UHI in both time and space has not been investigated yet. This research designs an object-oriented spatiotemporal model to reconstruct the evolution of UHI and provide a qualitative interpretation. Each UHI is modeled as a spatiotemporal field object with it own life cycle. Dynamic behavior of an UHI is defined by sequences of spatial changes (e.g. contraction or expansion) and topological transformations (e.g. merge or split). The model is implemented in an object-relational database and applied to air temperature data collected from weather stations every hour over three days. UHIs with their behavior were extracted from the data. Results suggest that the model can effectively track and provide a qualitative description of the UHI evolution.

Elastic metamaterials are of growing interest due to their unique effective properties and wave manipulation abilities. Unlike phononic crystals based on the Bragg scattering mechanism, elastic metamaterials (EMMs) are based on the locally resonant (LR) mechanism and can fully control elastic waves at a subwavelength scale. Microstructural designs of EMMs in plate-like structures have attracted a great deal of attention. In this paper, the recent advances in the microstructural designs of LR-based EMM plates are reviewed. Their potential applications in the fields of low frequency guided wave attenuation, wave manipulation and energy trapping at a subwavelength scale, and structural health monitoring are discussed.

Amino sugars are quantitatively significant constituents of soil and marine sediment, but their sources and turnover in environmental samples remain poorly understood. The stable carbon isotopic composition of amino sugars can provide information on the lifestyles of their source organisms and can be monitored during incubations with labeled substrates to estimate the turnover rates of microbial populations. However, until now, such investigation has been carried out only with soil samples, partly because of the much lower abundance of amino sugars in marine environments. We therefore optimized a procedure for compound-specific isotopic analysis of amino sugars in marine sediment, employing gas chromatography–isotope ratio mass spectrometry. The whole procedure consisted of hydrolysis, neutralization, enrichment, and derivatization of amino sugars. Except for the derivatization step, the protocol introduced negligible isotopic fractionation, and the minimum requirement of amino sugar for isotopic analysis was 20 ng, i.e., equivalent to ~8 ng of amino sugar carbon. Compound-specific stable carbon isotopic analysis of amino sugars obtained from marine sediment extracts indicated that glucosamine and galactosamine were mainly derived from organic detritus, whereas muramic acid showed isotopic imprints from indigenous bacterial activities. The δ13C analysis of amino sugars provides a valuable addition to the biomarker-based characterization of microbial metabolism in the deep marine biosphere, which so far has been lipid oriented and biased towards the detection of archaeal signals.
