Abstract

The AEgIS experiment aims at performing the first test of the Weak Equivalence Principle of General Relativity in the antimatter sector by measuring the gravitational acceleration acting on a beam of cold antihydrogen to a precision of 1 %. The installation of the apparatus is making good progress and large parts were taken into operation. Parasitic detector tests during the beamtime in December 2012 gave essential input for an optimal moir´e deflectometer and the detector layout necessary to perform the gravity measurement.

Abstract

The precise measurement of forces is one way to obtain deep insight into the fundamental interactions present in nature. In the context of neutral antimatter, the gravitational interaction is of high interest, potentially revealing new forces that violate the weak equivalence principle. Here we report on a successful extension of a tool from atom optics—the moiré deflectometer—for a measurement of the acceleration of slow antiprotons. The setup consists of two identical transmission gratings and a spatially resolving emulsion detector for antiproton annihilations. Absolute referencing of the observed antimatter pattern with a photon pattern experiencing no deflection allows the direct inference of forces present. The concept is also straightforwardly applicable to antihydrogen measurements as pursued by the AEgIS collaboration. The combination of these very different techniques from high energy and atomic physics opens a very promising route to the direct detection of the gravitational acceleration of neutral antimatter., Measuring forces on antimatter is vital to testing our understanding of fundamental physics. Towards this aim, Aghion et al. present a method to measure the deflection of antiprotons based on an atom optical tool, the moiré deflectometer, which could be extended to future antihydrogen gravity measurements.

Abstract

see paper for full list of authors; International audience; The AEgIS experiment is an international collaboration with the main goal of performing the first direct measurement of the Earth's gravitational acceleration on antimatter. Critical to the success of AEgIS is the production of cold antihydrogen (View the MathML source) atoms. The FACT detector is used to measure the production and temperature of the View the MathML source atoms and for establishing the formation of a View the MathML source beam. The operating requirements for this detector are very challenging: it must be able to identify each of the thousand or so annihilations in the 1 ms period of pulsed View the MathML source production, operate at 4 K inside a 1 T solenoidal field and not produce more than 10 W of heat. The FACT detector consists of two concentric cylindrical layers of 400 scintillator fibres with a 1 mm diameter and a 0.6 mm pitch. The scintillating fibres are coupled to clear fibres which transport the scintillation light to 800 silicon photomultipliers. Each silicon photomultiplier signal is connected to a linear amplifier and a fast discriminator, the outputs of which are sampled continuously by Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). In the course of the developments for the FACT detector we have established the performance of scintillating fibres at 4 K by means of a cosmic-ray tracker operating in a liquid helium cryostat. The FACT detector was installed in the AEgIS apparatus in December 2012 and will be used to study the View the MathML source formation when the low energy antiproton physics programs resume at CERN in the Summer of 2014. This paper presents the design requirements and construction methods of the FACT detector and provides the first results of the detector commissioning.

The goal is to determine g with a 1% relative accuracy. In 2012 we tested emulsion films in vacuum and at room temperature with low energy antiprotons from the CERN antiproton decelerator. First results on the expected performance for AEgIS are presented.

Abstract

The AEgIS Experiment is an international collaboration based at CERN whose aim is to perform the first direct measurement of the gravitational acceleration g of antihydrogen in the gravitational field of the Earth. Cold antihydrogen will be produced with a pulsed charge exchange reaction in a cylindrical Penning trap where antiprotons will be cooled to 100mK. The cold antihydrogen will be produced in an excited Rydberg state and subsequently formed into a beam. The deflection of the antihydrogen beam will be measured by using Moiré deflectometer gratings. After being approved in late 2008, AEgIS started taking data in a commissioning phase early 2012. This report presents an overview of the AEgIS experiment, describes its current status and shows the first measurements on antiproton catching and cooling in the 5 T Penning catching trap. We will also present details on the techniques needed for the 100mK antihydrogen production, such as pulsed positronium production and its excitation with lasers.

Abstract

SQUID multiplexers (SQMUX) are essential components for large arrays of TES-based detectors. This paper presents the analysis of multiplexers with two SQUID-stages (2-stage SQMUX) that allows for improved noise performance compared to existing SQMUX configurations. In the 2-stage SQMUX configurations here discussed, each TES is associated with its front-end SQUID. Flux-actuated, SQUID-based switches are used to encode the output current of the front-end SQUIDs. This encoding can be done such that code division (CD) or time division (TD) multiplexing is realized. The encoded output signals of all front-end SQUIDs are then coupled via a superconducting intermediate loop to a second-stage SQUID.

Abstract

AEgIS (Antimatter experiment: gravity, interferometry, spectroscopy) is an experiment approved by CERN with the goal of studying antihydrogen physics. In AEgIS, antihydrogen will be produced by charge exchange reactions of cold antiprotons with positronium atoms excited in a Rydberg state (n > 20). In the first phase of the experiment, controlled acceleration by an electric field gradient (Stark effect) and subsequent measurement of free fall in a Moiré deflectometer will allow a test of the weak equivalence principle. In a second phase, the antihydrogen will be slowed, confined, and laser-cooled to perform CPT studies and detailed spectroscopy. In the present work, after a general description of the experiment, the present status of advancement will be reviewed, with special attention to the production and excitation of positronium atoms.

Abstract

We are currently producing iridium based TESs for a wide variety of applications such as single photon detection of the visible and infrared light, X-ray spectroscopy and low energy nuclear beta and electron capture spectroscopy for neutrino mass search experiment. We present a study of the TES performance related to the superconductivity properties of the Ir film as function of the production processes, that depend on substrate type: Si or SiN, and of the operating electrical parameters. Moreover we developed a finite element model of thin superconducting film, by which we obtain qualitative agreement between experimental and simulated data.

Abstract

Experiments on superconducting transition properties and power noise density experiments are performed in Ir-based transition edge sensors samples prepared by magnetron sputtering and by laser ablation techniques. The experimental temperature dependence of the resistive-superconducting transitions are compared and analyzed in terms of percolating models. Broad excess noise peak of low amplitude is detected close to the superconductive state and explained by the correlated avalanche theory.

Abstract

The IrAu TESs which have been developed in Genoa in past years, will be assembled in large numbers in a detector to reach the required accuracy in neutrino mass measurement (by β decay of 187Re). When the number of bolometers increases a multiplexed readout is needed to reduce the thermal load on the low temperature refrigerator and to keep low the cost of SQUID electronics. We present the scheme of the circuit that distributes the AC supply to the TESs in the array and collects the signal from a row of devices, decoding the address by the signal frequency. The TESs are polarized by voltage sources of different frequencies. The TES working at different frequencies can be read by a single SQUID, which reads the current induced in a Superconducting transformer, and feeds in the transformer itself a feedback flux. The signal from the TES in the idle state will be compensated. The circuit will be built with planar film technology and will act as heat sink for each TES. The requirements for the SQUID will be discussed. The construction of a small prototype of the circuit is under way.

Abstract

A resonant circuit tuned to a particular frequency of the motion of charged particles stored in a Penning trap and connected to a low noise amplifier allows, at the same time, cooling and non destructive detection of the particles. Its use is widely diffused when single or few particles are stored near the centre of a hyperbolic Penning trap. We present a consistent model that predicts the shape of the induced signal when the tuned circuit is used to detect and cool the axial motion of a cold non neutral plasma stored in an open-ended cylindrical Penning trap. The model correctly accounts for the not negligible axial plasma size. We show that the power spectrum of the signal measured across the tuned circuit provides information about the particle number and insights about the plasma temperature. We report on the design of a HEMT-based cryogenic amplifier working at 14.4 MHz and 4.2 K and the results of the noise measurements. We have measured a drain current noise in the range from 6 to 17 pA/√Hz, which corresponds to an increase of the tuned circuit equivalent temperature of at maximum 0.35 K. The cryogenic amplifier has a very low power consumption from few tens to few hundreds of μW corresponding to a drain current in the range 100–800 μ A. An additional contribution due to the gate noise has been identified when the drain current is below 300 μA; above that value an upper limit of the increase of the equivalent tuned circuit temperature due to this contribution of 0.02 K has been obtained. These features make the tuned circuit connected to this amplifier a promising device for detecting and cooling the axial motion of an electron plasma when the Penning trap is mounted inside a dilution refrigerator.

see paper for full list of authors; International audience; The AEgIS experiment is an interdisciplinary collaboration between atomic, plasma and particle physicists, with the scientific goal of performing the first precision measurement of the Earth's gravitational acceleration on antimatter. The principle of the experiment is as follows: cold antihydrogen atoms are synthesized in a Penning-Malmberg trap and are Stark accelerated towards a moiré deflectometer, the classical counterpart of an atom interferometer, and annihilate on a position sensitive detector. Crucial to the success of the experiment is an antihydrogen detector that will be used to demonstrate the production of antihydrogen and also to measure the temperature of the anti-atoms and the creation of a beam. The operating requirements for the detector are very challenging: it must operate at close to 4 K inside a 1 T solenoid magnetic field and identify the annihilation of the antihydrogen atoms that are produced during the 1 μs period of antihydrogen production. Our solution—called the FACT detector—is based on a novel multi-layer scintillating fiber tracker with SiPM readout and off the shelf FPGA based readout system. This talk will present the design of the FACT detector and detail the operation of the detector in the context of the AEgIS experiment.

Abstract

We report here the preliminary results of the search for gravitational wave bursts from the 2003 run of the EXPLORER–NAUTILUS experiment. The total common measuring time was 149 days. The detectors had a typical noise spectral amplitude of about 2 × 10−21 Hz−1/2, a bandwidth of the order of 10 Hz and a very good stability. We derive a new upper limit for the GW burst rate, of the order of 0.02 events/day for hRSS ≥ 2 × 10−19, and discuss the implication of this result with respect to the results obtained with the 2001 run.

Abstract

We are developing a microwave parametric transducer to be installed on massive gravity wave antennas, like bars and spheres. This transducer is based on the high sensitivity of a superconducting RF cavity to the change of the appropriate geometrical dimension. To fully exploit the transducer sensitivity, a very low noise amplifier, at the operating frequency of a few GHz, is required. We describe the experimental set-up and the test procedure that has been used to measure the noise temperature and the gain of the LNA at several temperatures, from 300 K to 1.5 K. The influence of imperfect impedance matching with the temperature change is investigated. A commercial GaAs LNA in the frequency range 1–3 GHz has shown a noise temperature TN ≤ 4 K at 4.2 K and below.

Abstract

The advanced interferometer network will herald a new era in observational astronomy. There is a very strong science case to go beyond the advanced detector network and build detectors that operate in a frequency range from 1 Hz-10 kHz, with sensitivity a factor ten better in amplitude. Abstract

The AEGIS experiment, currently being set up at the Antiproton Decelerator at CERN, has the objective of studying the free fall of antimatter in the Earth's gravitational field by means of a pulsed cold atomic beam of antihydrogen atoms. Both duration of free fall and vertical displacement of the horizontally emitted atoms will be measured, allowing a first test of the WEP with antimatter.

Abstract

After the first production of cold antihydrogen by the ATHENA and ATRAP experiments ten years ago, new second-generation experiments are aimed at measuring the fundamental properties of this anti-atom. The goal of AEGIS (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) is to test the weak equivalence principle by studying the gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter with a pulsed, cold antihydrogen beam. The experiment is currently being assembled at CERN’s Antiproton Decelerator. In AEGIS, antihydrogen will be produced by charge exchange of cold antiprotons with positronium excited to a high Rydberg state (n > 20). An antihydrogen beam will be produced by controlled acceleration in an electric-field gradient (Stark acceleration). The deflection of the horizontal beam due to its free fall in the gravitational field of the earth will be measured with a moiré deflectometer. Initially, the gravitational acceleration will be determined to a precision of 1%, requiring the detection of about 10^5 antihydrogen atoms. In this paper, after a general description, the present status of the experiment will be reviewed.

Abstract

Antihydrogen holds the promise to test, for the first time, the universality of free-fall with a system composed entirely of antiparticles. The AEgIS experiment at CERN’s antiproton decelerator aims to measure the gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter by measuring the deflection of a beam of antihydrogen in the Earths gravitational field (g¯¯¯). The principle of the experiment is as follows: cold antihydrogen atoms are synthesized in a Penning-Malberg trap and are Stark accelerated towards a moiré deflectometer, the classical counterpart of an atom interferometer, and annihilate on a position sensitive detector. Crucial to the success of the experiment is the spatial precision of the position sensitive detector. We propose a novel free-fall detector based on a hybrid of two technologies: emulsion detectors, which have an intrinsic spatial resolution of 50 nm but no temporal information, and a silicon strip / scintillating fiber tracker to provide timing and positional information. In 2012 we tested emulsion films in vacuum with antiprotons from CERN’s antiproton decelerator. The annihilation vertices could be observed directly on the emulsion surface using the microscope facility available at the University of Bern. The annihilation vertices were successfully reconstructed with a resolution of 1–2 μmon the impact parameter. If such a precision can be realized in the final detector, Monte Carlo simulations suggest of order 500 antihydrogen annihilations will be sufficient to determine g¯¯¯with a 1 % accuracy. Abstract

The AEg¯ $\overline {\rm{g}}$IS experiment [1] aims at directly measuring the gravitational acceleration g on a beam of cold antihydrogen (H¯$\overline {\rm{H}}$) to a precision of 1%, performing the first test with antimatter of the (WEP) Weak Equivalence Principle. The experimental apparatus is sited at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. After production by mixing of antiprotons with Rydberg state positronium atoms (Ps), the H¯$\overline {\rm{H}}$ atoms will be driven to fly horizontally with a velocity of a few 100 ms−1 for a path length of about 1 meter. The small deflection, few tens of μm, will be measured using two material gratings (of period ∼ 80 μm) coupled to a position-sensitive detector working as a moiré deflectometer similarly to what has been done with matter atoms [2]. The shadow pattern produced by the H¯$\overline {\rm{H}}$ beam will then be detected by reconstructing the annihilation points with a spatial resolution (∼ 2 μm) of each antiatom at the end of the flight path by the sensitive-position detector. During 2012 the experimental apparatus has been commissioned with antiprotons and positrons. Since the AD will not be running during 2013,during the refurbishment of the CERN accelerators, the experiment is currently working with positrons, electrons and protons, in order to prepare the way for the antihydrogen production in late 2014.

Abstract

We are developing a magnetic microscope, based on a micro SQUID sensor. with an integrated coil of 10 μm diameter We present here the new features of this system. The scanning stage of the microscope is completely contained in a cryogenic environment and is activated by piezoelectric actuators of the bimorph type. A capacitive transducer of new design which has been designed and constructed in our laboratory, monitors the movement of the scanning stage. The capacitive transducer detects the position of the moving stage by the change in the capacitance of two sliding electrodes. The x and y measurements are integrated in a single device. The electronic capacitance monitor is based on a null capacitance bridge with fast-acting digital feedback. In the measurement of variable capacitance, we obtain a 14 bit resolution with a bandwidth larger than 750 Hz by using a XSP56001 digital signal processor (DSP), fast analogue-to-digital converters and multiplying digital-to-analogue converters. The DSP controls the scanning stage by driving the piezoclectric actuators, monitoring the capacitance change due to the movements of the sample platform and correcting accordingly its position.

Abstract

I present a simulation of the magnetic behaviour of a network of long Josephson junctions, with a statistical distribution of junction lengths and Josephson currents. To support the hypothesis of weak connectivity in laminar materials I measured the magnetization of Bi/Pb (2223) samples, at very low fields and low temperature. Hysteresis cycles were observed.

Abstract

Increasing interest in safety evaluation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has risen in relation to their wide applications, together with the evidence of their cytotoxic effects. It has been shown that chemical functionalization extends the applications of CNTs, conferring them new functions that cannot otherwise be acquired by pristine CNTs, but also impacts on biological response to CNTs, modifying their toxicological profile. We assessed the onset of pulmonary toxic effects caused by pristine MW-CNTs and functionalized MW-NH₂ or MW-COOH, 16 days after intratracheal instillation (1 mg/kg b.w.); major endpoints tested included (i) histopathology of lung (Haematoxylin/Eosin Staining), (ii) apoptotic/proliferating features examined by TUNEL and PCNA immunostaining, and (iii) presence/distribution of (1) Transforming Growth Factor-beta1 (TGFß1), (2) Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and (3) Collagen (Type I) investigated by immunochemical methods, as markers of lung toxicity, inflammation, and fibrosis, respectively. Lung histopathology from exposed animals showed dark, particulate-laden macrophages, reflecting carbon nanomaterial engulfing, both at alveolar and bronchiolar levels, after treatment with all the tested CNTs. Alteration of lung architecture was also observed in several areas showing collapsed thick-walled alveoli and the presence of micro-haemorrhagic foci. TUNEL and PCNA, indicative of apoptosis and cell proliferation respectively, showed a significant increase of immunopositive cells at bronchiolar, alveolar and macrophagic levels, as expression of an improved cellular turnover. Increased immunoreactivity for pulmonary TGFß1 and IL-6 was observed in treated rats, particularly in bronchiolar areas, collapsed alveoli and at stromal level, while evident changes for collagen were not detected. Taken together these findings demonstrated the general pulmonary toxicity coupled with inflammatory response after in vivo exposure to CNTs, without overt signs of fibrosis and granuloma formation, irrespectively of nanotube functionalization.

Abstract

Considerable efforts have been made and are still being made to verify the validity of the principle of the equivalence of gravitational and inertial mass, one of the cornerstones of the classical theory of general relativity. Specific attempts at quantummechanical formulations of gravity allow for non-Newtonian contributions, which might lead to a difference in the gravitational force on matter and antimatter. While it is widely expected that the gravitational interaction is independent of the composition of bodies, this has only been tested for matter systems, but never yet for antimatter systems. By combining techniques from different fields, and relying on recent developments in the production of Positronium and ongoing work to laser-excite Positronium to Rydberg states, such a test with neutral antimatter has become feasible. The primary goal of the AEGIS experiment being built at the Antiproton Decelerator at CERN is to carry out the first direct measurement of the Earth‘s gravitational acceleration on antihydrogen by means of a classical Moire deflectometer.

Abstract

The granular high-Tcsuperconductors can carry very low transport current, in comparison to that found in the bulk of the material. Magnetization and critical current measurements at very low field indicate that this low transport current behaves as expected from a critical state model. The presence of weak links between the grains in granular aggregates is firmly established, together with the Josephson character of such links. The existence of some kind of magnetic particles, and of a mechanism of pinning for them, is required to explain the critical state regime. In this paper we examine the flux structures which can be present in the granular systems, which can be described by an array of SQUIDs, and we show their similarities to fluxons in a continuous medium and to fluxons in uniform Josephson junctions. A simple model, based on a two-dimensional network of pointlike Josepson junctions, is adequate to demonstrate the existance of the IF (intergranular fluxon). Its characteristics depend on a single parameter, which gives the coupling strength between grains. The discreteness of the system is the cause of an intrinsic pinning of the intergranular fluxons.

Abstract

The main scientific goal of the AEGIS experiment ( A ntimatter E xperiment: G ravity, I nterferometry, S pectroscopy) is the direct measurement of the Earth's gravitational acceleration g on a beam of cold antihydrogen ( H ¯ ). The production of an antihydrogen beam is achieved by a charge exchange reaction between Rydberg positronium and cold antiprotons. The H ¯ beam will be accelerated up to a velocity of a few 100 m/s and the gravitational acceleration will be obtained by measuring the small vertical deflection of the beam (a few tens μ m) using a Moire' deflectometer.

We present a concept for the payload SAGACE, the Spectroscopic Active Galaxies And Cluster Explorer, devoted to study the evolution of Universe structures using different observables, all of them in the mm/submm wavelength. The SAGACE payload is made of a passively cooled 3 m telescope, a cryogenic Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) and detector arrays to be operated at 0.3 K by a 3He fridge. Abstract

The low transport current in granular high-Tc superconductors is undoubtedly attributed to the presence of weak links between grains. Magnetization and critical current measurements at very low field indicates that this low transport current behaves as expected from a critical state model. In this paper we show that a simple linear model of the granular system, based on an array of Josephson junctions and holes, can explain the existence of the critical state regime and shows dynamical effects, which have consequences even at low frequency, allowing for instance to explain the flux flow resistance of these materials.

A simple idea of using transformers as impedance adapters between TES and conventional JFET amplifiers, allowing to built an electronic readout system that does not degenerate the signal, will be presented. The theoretical modelling and systematic experimental results of such devices, indicate that there is a frequency range were the amplifier noise is negligible with respect to the TES noise.

Abstract

We present a revisited Ho-163 electron capture decay method as a possible candidate for the neutrino mass determination, proposed in MANU-Genoa in 1997. The present detector performances open new opportunities for self-calibrated, high statistics and eV energy resolution experiments within the context of MARE-1, Genoa. The study, even if at an early stage, indicates that we can take advantage of using detectors with current performances that have been developed for astrophysics applications.

Abstract

A search for periodic gravitational-wave signals from isolated neutron stars in the NAUTILUS detector data is presented. We have analyzed half a year of data over the frequency band $$ Hz, the spindown range $$ Hz/s and over the entire sky. We have divided the data into 2 day stretches and we have analyzed each stretch coherently using matched filtering. We have imposed a low threshold for the optimal detection statistic to obtain a set of candidates that are further examined for coincidences among various data stretches. For some candidates we have also investigated the change of the signal-to-noise ratio when we increase the observation time from two to four days. Our analysis has not revealed any gravitational-wave signals. Therefore we have imposed upper limits on the dimensionless gravitational-wave amplitude over the parameter space that we have searched. Depending on frequency, our upper limit ranges from $3.4 \times 10^{-23}$ to $1.3 \times 10^{-22}$. We have attempted a statistical verification of the hypotheses leading to our conclusions. Abstract

We measured the critical current of thin strips of sintered YBCO deposited by electrophoresis or sedimentation on an Ag substrate. The typical granulometry of deposited samples was about 1 μm. The critical current of the samples was measured as a function of the temperature (from the transition temperature down to LHe) and of the magnetic field. The current density versus temperature and magnetic field behavior shows a number of interesting features. The current increases quadratically on decreasing temperature and the half width of the I versus B curves increases slightly, with a value in agreement with the junction size. We show that these effects can be explained in the framework of BCS theory, by modelling the material as a network of weak links with small dimensions having a normal barrier.

Abstract

A model developed to obtain a relation connecting the critical current and the quench current of superconducting (S/C) cables is described. The model is based on the hypothesis that the heat produced inside the cable is only due to the ohmic dissipation, and it is only removed by thermal exchange with the liquid helium bath. The ohmic dissipation is calculated by supposing that the electrical resistance of the S/C cable at the transition to normal state is: R alpha l/sup n/ where l is the current and n (n value) is an integer number. To calculate the function R(I), the field inhomogeneity at the conductor due to the self-field is taken into account, introducing the effective critical field. >

Abstract

The network of resonant bar detectors of gravitational waves resumed coordinated observations within the International Gravitational Event Collaboration (IGEC-2). Four detectors are taking part in this collaboration: ALLEGRO, AURIGA, EXPLORER and NAUTILUS. We present here the results of the search for gravitational wave bursts over 6 months during 2005, when IGEC-2 was the only gravitational wave observatory in operation. The network data analysis implemented is based on a time coincidence search among AURIGA, EXPLORER and NAUTILUS, keeping the data from ALLEGRO for follow-up studies. With respect to the previous IGEC 1997-2000 observations, the amplitude sensitivity of the detectors to bursts improved by a factor about 3 and the sensitivity bandwidths are wider, so that the data analysis was tuned considering a larger class of detectable waveforms. Thanks to the higher duty cycles of the single detectors, we decided to focus the analysis on three-fold observation, so to ensure the identification of any single candidate of gravitational waves (gw) with high statistical confidence. The data collected during 2005 by the resonant bar Explorer are divided into segments and incoherently summed in order to perform an all-sky search for periodic gravitational wave signals. The parameter space of the search spanned about 40 Hz in frequency, over 23927 positions in the sky. Neither source orbital corrections nor spindown parameters have been included, with the result that the search was sensible to isolated neutron stars with a frequency drift less than 6 X 10^{-11} Hz/s. No gravitational wave candidates have been found by means of the present analysis, which led to a best upper limit of 3.1 X 10^{-23} for the dimensionless strain amplitude., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We present the design and the performances of LTc SQUIDs with integrated micro pick-up coils to employ as magnetic field sensors in high spatial resolution measurements. The circular pick-up coils, having an inner diameter ranging from 5 to 50 m and a line width of 2 m, are well separated (1.5 mm) from the SQUID body to minimize magnetic interferences. The micro pick-up coils are connected to the SQUID by both magnetometer and gradiometric configurations. All SQUID types contain an integrated modulation/feedback coil for flux locked loop operations. At T = 4 2 K, the sensors have a measured white magnetic flux noise spectral density as low as 3 8 0 Hz 1 2 . These measurements were made in a flux locked loop, using a direct cou- pled amplifier, without the use of additional positive feedback. The low noise is attributed to the high intrinsic responsivity of our sen- sors. Finally, flux gain measurements (the ratio between the mea- sured magnetic flux and the flux applied to the micro pick-up coil), are reported.

Parametric transducers, such as superconducting rf cavities, can boost the bandwidth and sensitivity of the next generation resonant antennas, thanks to a readily available technology. We have developed a fully coupled dynamic model of the system "antenna--transducer" and worked out some estimates of signal--to--noise ratio and the stability conditions in various experimental configurations. We also show the design and the prototype of a rf cavity which, together with a suitable read--out electronic, will be used as a test bench for the parametric transducer., 7 pages, 3 eps figures. Abstract

We report on the present scientific run (04-05) of the two detectors EXPLORER and NAUTILUS. The 04-05 run of the two detectors started in March 2004. The strain sensitivity is about 7 x 10(-22) Hz(-1/2) and the bandwidth is about 5 Hertz. The sensitivity for 1 ms bursts is h = 3 x 10(-19).

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the toxicity of styrene in the liver of adult rats treated either by inhalation of styrene vapour (300 ppm, 6 h/d, 5 d/wk, for 2 wk) or intraperitoneally with different styrene doses (4, 40, 400 mg/Kg) for 3 consecutive days. Using a light microscope, some alterations of liver parenchyma and sinusoid dilation were noticed, more marked in the group treated with the intraperitoneal administration of the chemical. Using an electron microscope, some additional changes were observed (once again, more marked in the latter group of rats): a) an increase in the content of lipids inside hepatocytes, and b) the rise of intracytoplasmic, intercellular and perisinusoidal collagen fibres. Therefore, cell damage and functional disturbance of sinusoids due to perisinusoidal fibrosis are apparent in the liver of both groups of rats exposed to styrene treatment, but these changes are definitely more significant in those subjected to intraperitoneal administration.

Abstract

The IMBOSS (Interstellar/Intergalactic Medium and gamma‐ray Burst Observatory and Spectroscopy Survey) is an experiment proposed to fly on the ISS (International Space Station), in order to perform an all‐sky survey to study the diffuse X‐ray emission and to measure the spectra of Gamma‐Ray Bursts (GRB) with high energy resolution in the 0.1–10 keV energy range. In a 3‐year mission, the experiment will detect about 20 to 40 GRBs. In several events, we can perform high resolution spectroscopy of the iron emission lines and absorption edges. Such components have been observed by BeppoSAX and Chandra. The measurements of these features would provide a direct diagnostic of the physical and kinematical state of the medium surrounding a GRB. Furthermore, they would supply information about the origin of the progenitors of the GRBs (probably a supernova explosion of massive stars) and their site formation (possibly a star‐forming region).
